Hillendale Mine is operated by Exxaro KZN Sands, and is situated on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa near the towns of Empangeni and Richards Bay, some 200 km north of Durban. During the mining operation the heavy minerals rutile, ilmenite, zircon and leucoxene are extracted for further beneficiation at a processing complex near the town of Empangeni. The deposit contains approximately 25% slimes (defined as the sub-45 micron fraction), and is mined using hydraulic monitoring. Run of mine is gravity fed down launders to pump stations, which deliver the material to a primary wet plant. Slimes is separated from the run of mine prior to the heavy minerals being separated from the sand. Sand tails containing approximately 2-5% slimes is pumped to the mining void. The slimes is thickened to a density of approximately 1.2, and most of the resultant material is pumped to a sub-aerial deposition site (residue dam). The area is characterized by an annual rainfall of approximately 1300 mm, which is relatively high by South African standards. From an agricultural perspective the soils are deep and well weathered. Dryland agriculture has been practised on an extensive scale in the area for the past 70 years. Sugar cane in particular is cultivated on and around the mine area. In terms of environmental approvals, the post-mining land use and objectives are defined as economically viable and sustainable sugar cane cultivation in the mined areas. During mining the soil profile is destroyed. In this paper the establishment of a reconstituted soil profile is discussed, with specific reference to the methodology that is being followed to achieve the homogeneous blending of sand and slimes. Defining the rehabilitation strategy and soil specification Strategically Exxaro KZN Sands divided rehabilitation into four aspects, comprising physical rehabilitation (restoration of soil structure), vegetative rehabilitation (restoration of vegetative cover), ecological rehabilitation (restoration of sustainable ecological communities), and sustainability (sustainable man/environment interface) (Hattingh and Viljoen, 2006). It is believed that the key to successful rehabilitation lies in achieving a substrate (soil) suitable for the establishment of the target vegetation. During the development of the rehabilitation strategy the key factor in the establishment of a suitable soil profile was shown to be the soil water retention of this material. Since dryland agriculture is practised, this aspect becomes critically important in ensuring that the post-mining land use is sustainable (Hattingh et al., in prep.). From a financial perspective, a closure certificate being issued implies that the state takes over financial liability for the rehabilitated land. This has significant implications for the state-the default position will be that all possible latent and residual impacts must be identified and known prior to a closure certificate being issued. From the mine's perspective this precautionary approach by the state implies that post-operational costs cannot be quantified exactly, and our approach is therefore to mitigate the risk of a long post-closure care and maintenance phase by means of addressing all potential latent defects during the operational rehabilitation phase. The financial viability of the soil reconstitution process itself is therefore not measured against other rehabilitation methods, but against the risk of not achieving closure. During a series of technical workshops comprising experts in the various disciplines in the rehabilitation of the soil profile were identified. These aspects include the re-establishment of a functional soil profile, soil physical characteristics, soil chemistry, soil biota, salinization potential, erodibility and soil weathering. The natural soils in the Hillendale area have been classified in terms of the South African soil classification system (MacVicar and co-workers, 1991) and consist of Hutton (orthic topsoils on red apedal subsoils) and Clovelly (orthic top soils on yellow apedal subsoils) soil forms. The topsoils consistently comprise medium to fine grained sand overlying heavier textured sandy clay loam to clayey subsoils. The topsoil structure consists of a single grain structure, whereas subsoils are apedal. These soils are typically deeply weathered and do not show secondary structures. During the mining process a layer of topsoil (300 mm) is stripped off, and the balance of the material down to the footwall is processed. Sand with 2-5% slimes (defined as the sub-45 micron fraction) is returned as backfill in order to re-establish the dune to approximate the previous landform. From an agricultural perspective this material is not suitable for the dryland cultivation of sugar cane. A capping of more suitable material therefore has to be provided. The most significant difference between the premining soil form and the backfill material is the percentage slimes, consequently a mixture of the sand and slimes is required as a capping over the backfilled sand. The required thickness of the cap is a function of specifically plant growth requirements, erodibility, weathering and runoff (Hattingh, et al.; in prep.). The percentage slimes required in the cap is a function of mainly soil water requirements (Hattingh and Viljoen, 2006). The conservative indications to date show that the reconstituted soil profile should consist of a homogeneously blended mixture of 70%-80% sand and 30%-20% slimes up to a maximum of 2 metres thick. This will be sufficient to ensure growth during dry periods.

Worker participation in equipment development can result in improved user acceptance and product quality. This paper focuses on worker engagement in equipment development processes in the South African minerals sector. Qualitative data was gathered during interviews with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and industry experts. A lack of inclusion in equipment design from workers from all organizational levels in mines was reported. Meanwhile, the historical context and workplace culture of the mining industry (including leadership, trust, training, performance, and remuneration factors) were evident barriers to the implementation of new technology. Worker engagement processes should include securing management commitment, creating multidisciplinary teams, effective facilitation, shared understanding of needs, training and development, and iterative design. Human-centred design approaches and independent platforms for engagement on equipment design requirements are recommended.

It is encouraging that membership has continued to grow, and now stands at 1,613, an increase of 61 over last year's total. Your Council, however, is aware that there are still people in our mining and metallurgical industries, who could qualify for membership, but who have not yet joined the Institute. A drive to increase membership was accordingly organised, and members of Council were given the responsibility for campaigning in sections of industry, and for publicising the objectives and advantages of belonging to the Institute. Up to now there has not been much reaction to this campaign, but I hope we will see results in the coming year. At the same time, Council has recognised the need for change in the conduct of the Institute's affairs in order to meet the changing needs of our membership. Our members, both mining and metallurgical, are in the first place, geographically more widely dispersed than they used to be, and secondly, with the growth of the metallurgical industry, their technical interests are now more diversified. The Institute must cope with these changing needs if we are to continue to perform a useful function. The

A decision by joint-venture partners Anglo American, Gencor, and the Industrial Development Corporation to proceed with the expansion of the Columbus Stainless Steel plant in Middelburg will contribute significantly towards the economic growth that South Africa needs so desperately. The expanded facility, expected to come on-line in 1995, will be the largest single-plant producer of stainless steel in the world, and the company will rank sixth overall in world production.

For tunnelling in poor and heterogeneous ground a reliable on-site short-term prediction is required to allow a safe and economical construction. With the use of absolute displacement monitoring data and advanced software for evaluation of the data in combination with a routine update of the geological model a considerable increase in the reliability of the short-term prediction could be achieved. The paper deals with theoretical considerations, numerical studies and case histories from alpine tunnels in heterogeneous rock. Tunnelbau in schlechtem und heterogenem Gebirge erfordert auf der Baustelle eine verlaessliche Kurzzeitprognose, um ein sicheres und wirtschaftliches Bauwerk gewaehrleisten zu können. Die Verwendung von absoluten Verschiebungsmessdaten und deren Auswertung mit Hilfe von hoch entwickelten Softwareprogrammen in Kombination mit einer laufenden Aktualisierung des Gebirgsmodells ermöglicht eine erhebliche Erhöhung der Verlässlichkeit von Kurzzeitprognosen. Dieser Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit theoretischen Ansätzen, numerischen Modellen und Fallstudien von Tunnelvortrieben in heterogenem Gebirge. La construction de tunnels dans la montagne hétérogène de faible résistance exige un pronostic fiable à court terme sur le chantier, afin de pouvoir garantir un ouvrage sûr et économique. L'utilisation des données de mesure de décalage absolues et de leur évaluation à l'aide de logiciels sophistiqués en combinaison avec une mise à jour courante du modèle de la montagne permet une augmentation considérable de la fiabilité des pronostics à court terme. Cette contribution présente des approches théoriques, des modèles numériques et de cas pratiques de progressions de tunnels dans des montagnes hétérogènes.

Selmer-Olsen, Consulting Metallurgist, Amcor Limited, on 'Trends in Ferro Alloy Production' was published in the May issue of the Journal and comprised information and data relating to new developments in ferro alloy production in various parts of the world. This was followed by a paper-'Conductivity and Viscosity Properties of Slags produced in ferro-alloy manufacture' by D. 1. Ossin et al. This was a record of laboratory test work on slags containing both lime and magnesia, corresponding with the composition of slags encountered in the production of ferro chrome alloys when a dolomite flux is employed. The third paper-'Review of the work of the Pyrometallurgical Research Group of N.I.M. and Metallurgy Department, Wits.' presented by Dr P. R. Jochens, leader of the Research Group, outlined the progress made on ten different research projects presently under way in the Department of Metallurgy. These projects range from studies of the kinetics and mechanism of the reduction of chromite ores through the determination of the activities of MnO in slags to phase studies and melting point determinations in the alloy systems Cr-Fe-Si-C and Cr-Fe-Si. A new feature of this Colloquium was the introduction of the discussion panel composed of four or five individuals known to have special knowledge or interest in the subject under duscussion. Mr J. J. Coetzee was chairman of the first panel, Professor D. D. Howat of the second and Dr R. E. Robinson of the third. During the discussion of Mr Selmer-Olsen's paper an interesting contribution was made by Mr Jack Hayley of Transalloys (Pty.) Limited who pointed out that the lowest power cost in the U.S.A. was that from the TV A at 6 mils per unit (0,43 cents S.A.) while costs from other sources were 7 to 8 mils per unit (0,50 to 0,57 cents S.A.) He also referred to the use of 'pile sintering' of ore fines plus coke at certain ferro alloy plants in the V.S. and to the recent practice of 'graphitising' the paste used for Soderberg electrodes. The last session in the afternoon was devoted to a group discussion on 'Practical problems in Arc Furnace Operation', Mr H. R. Reid of Middelburg Steel Alloys (Pty) Limited occupying the chair, members of the panel being Mr J. Meintjies (Rand Carbide Limited), Mr J. Benn (Amcor) and Mr E. J. Jackson (Transalloys (Pty.) Limited). Mr Reid initiated the discussion by talking of the design and composition of electrode shoes, mentioning the use of the 85/15 Cu/Zn alloy and the comparison of hollow shoes and shoes cooled by tubes. Mr Meintjies discussed electrode management with particular reference to breakages, and dealt with casing and fin design and the welding of fins. Mr Benn dealt with aspects of closed top furnace operation with particular reference to the control of eruptions in the furnace and indicated that preheating of the raw materials might be well worth considering together with the development of a system for the detection of the water vapour present. Mr J ackson was concerned with shells, linings, refractories and tap holes. He deprecated the use of oxygen for opening the tap hole emphasising how uncontrolled use of oxygen led to loss of shape of the tap hole and quite severe burning out of the front hole resulting in time and labour in repairs. A notable feature of the Colloquium was the free discussion 'from the floor' of the hall. "In a technologically advanced era, where process control is accurately maintained within the smallest error margins, and accuracy and precision are continuously improved, sampling is still left to the lowest paid employee in the company without training him or her properly to understand the relevance and importance of the task. In this paper the objectives of sampling in a process control environment is discussed and an attempt is made to link it to the theory of sampling. Some of the practical problems associated with implementing theoretical sampling principles in an industrial environment will be elucidated and some examples given on how compromises are made. Different methods of sampling will be discussed with real life examples from different manufacturing industries."

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

"In this paper a discussion is presented of a program designed to produce a 40-day production forecast for an underground stoping system.The program is intended to be a tool for the operations department in an underground mine, and is designed to utilize data readily available from production reports. Brevity of data input, ability to revise slope conditions easily and the accuracy of starting stope status are stressed. Applicability of the program to a wide variety of sloping methods makes the program potentially useful in a large number of mines.The general functions of the program subroutines, and input and output lists are discussed. An example is also given of a stope in operation for a three-day period, which shows how the program can handle production irregularities as they arise."

"This paper aims to demonstrate how a systemic approach can be applied to the analysis of the causes of accidents in South African mines. The accident analysis framework used was developed previously by the authors from the combination of the Mark III version of the Swiss Cheese model, Incident Cause Analysis Method (ICAM), the Nertney Wheel model, and safety management principles. Data on 91 accidents occurring from 2010 to 2012 at the site of a platinum mine in South Africa were used to populate the newly developed framework. The results obtained show that while routine violations (45% of all accidents analysed) were the most common form of human error, problems in the physical environment of workers were the most common workplace factor (39.6% of all accidents analysed). Furthermore, inadequate leadership was found to be the most common systemic factor responsible for accidents (51.6% of all accidents analysed). Some workplace factors were more commonly associated with particular unsafe acts than others, and some systemic factors were more associated with particular workplace factors than others. The outcome of this study demonstrates that systemic factors, rather than human errors and violations, are the chief causes of accidents in the mining sector. IntroductionThe mining industry is a very important sector of the South African national economy. A major factor threatening the sustainability of this industry is mining accidents, which frequently result in injuries or deaths, destruction of property, and pollution of the environment. In the past, mining accidents have led to the shutdown and threat of shutdown of mines (Ryan, 2008; Mail and Guardian, 2011). The country stands the risk of incurring significant losses if the mining industry continues to experience shutdowns. In 2012, the mining sector accounted for R262.7 billion (equivalent to US$32.83 billion) representing 8.3% of GDP directly, on a nominal basis (Chamber of Mines of South Africa, 2013).Mining safety is a global concern and has attracted significant international attention. This has precipitated various studies into different aspects of mining. Unfortunately, human error has been blamed for the majority of these accidents. A study by the US Bureau of Mines found that human error is the cause of almost 85% of all accidents (Patterson and Shappell, 2008). In Australia, it is the cause of two out of every three occupational accidents (Patterson and Shappell, 2008). Various mining companies maintain that they run efficient systems, and hence the behavioural problems of workers are to blame for most accidents. An understanding of accident causality could be a major step in the quest to reduce accidents. Only with a good understanding of the accident process can effective remedies can be designed."

It is commonly accepted that three types of aquifers exist in the Bushveld Complex: (a) alluvial aquifers in areas of river courses, (b) weathered bedrock aquifer formed by the in-situ weathering of the bedrocks, (c) fractured aquifers underlying the weathered aquifers controlled by the regional and local fracturing of the crystalline rocks. Hydrogeological studies conducted in the Critical Zone of the Bushveld Complex in the western limb show that the UG2 pyroxenite layer is of a particular interest and has a unique aquifer property. It yields much of the groundwater inflow into some mines and can be classified as the most important aquifer in the vicinity of the mining zone. The UG2 pyroxenite aquifer is restricted to the dipping UG2 pyroxenite unit. The unit weathers more intensely than the surrounding norites and anorthosites and is characterized by deeper weathering horizons (two to three times deeper than the surrounding rocks). For much of the UG2 mining area between depths of 35 ? 80 m, stoping of the UG2 takes place approximately 5 ? 7 m below the UG2 pyroxenite aquifer, and usually there is no groundwater inflow into the mine workings. However, unsealed deep exploration boreholes intersecting the UG2 pyroxenite and reaching underground mine workings, or mine roofbolts penetrating the weathered pyroxenite aquifer from underneath, can result in significant groundwater inflows into the underground workings. The reason as to why the UG2 pyroxenite weathers more than the norites and anorthosites has not been fully studied but is suspected to be due to the bedding planes of the unit and mineralogical composition of the particular pyroxenes forming the unit, which result in preferential physical and chemical weathering under atmospheric conditions. The weathered pyroxenes form sand-sized, rounded grains with improved effective porosity and permeability suitable for the storage and passage of groundwater. The orientation of the pyroxenite aquifer can easily be determined as it dips with the Bushveld layered strata. No-flow boundaries can be assumed on the hanging- and footwall of the pyroxenite aquifer and the flow rates can be estimated using 2-dimentional analytical equations. However, this must be confirmed with strong conceptual models since the existence of a fracture network connecting the pyroxenite aquifer with the overlying weathered and/or underling fractured aquifers can complicate the system, lowering the accuracy of analytical models and necessitating the utilization of numerical models.

Waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are a metals-rich fraction of electronic waste (e-waste) streams, and globally it has been demonstrated that they can be recycled gainfully to recover the metals. Reported successful cases of PCB recycling are carried out in large volumes, using high-level technology and high capital investment smelter house operations. This presents entry barriers for recyclers in developing economies where capital may not be accessible, and the waste volumes are not sufficient to warrant large scale operations. Hydrometallurgical processes have the potential to provide an option for the scalable processing of smaller volumes of PCBs and can be set up at relatively lower capital costs. However, to date, the hydrometallurgical treatment options available rely on precursor communition and classification processes that also require high capital and energy costs. This paper presents an overview of the work done under the Minerals to Metals signature theme towards understanding e-waste recycling processes and developing pre-processing and characterisation of PCBs in order to unlock potential for local end processing in developing economies, using South Africa as a case study. The structure of PCBs is reviewed, and the current size reduction techniques and the subsequent leaching processes are discussed. The first challenge facing the Institute is financial. From the accounts for you will note that the Institute operated at a loss for the first time since 1987. average membership subscription was increased by only 10 per cent, reflecting desire to keep costs down in the minerals industry. The Institute will therefore to rely on other income to meet its budget requirements and break even financially. source of these funds will be the activities of the Technical Programme Committees. disciplines-Mining, Extraction Metallurgy, and Metals Technology are planning programmes for the coming year. I urge al members to increase their support of colloquia schools. Increased membership would also bring in more funds. Please, therefore, encourage colleagues who are not yet members of the Institute to join it.

Tailings produced from the iron ore industry present many challenges due to the high economic and environmental impacts involved with their disposal. However, the relative scarcity of high-grade iron ores has driven manufacturers to recover and recycle these valuable tailings (secondary sources). This study aimed at the purification of ultrafine tailings with high sulphur content from an iron ore concentrator via reverse flotation to produce pellet feed fines. A specially designed flotation column featured with a nano bubble generator and a conventional bubble generator were employed to assess the effects of nano bubbles on the desulfurisation performance of iron ore concentrate under different operating conditions. Results obtained from this study indicated that the sulphur content of iron concentrate could be reduced from 1.2% to 0.22% in the presence of nano bubbles. Also, the results showed that use of nano-micro bubbles increased sulphur recovery 20% more, in comparison to micro bubbles. In order to obtain a more suitable separation medium for fine coal, in this paper a pulsed fluidised bed was used to measure the pressure fluctuation, density characteristics, bubble diameter and rising velocity of Geldart A and B particles in the bed by controlling the pulsation frequency and gas velocity, in order to study the fluidisation effect and two-phase distribution of the bed. The results indicated that with the increase of pulsation frequency, the breakthrough point on the fluidisation characteristic curve caused by particle adhesion disappeared, and there was an optimal frequency, which made the minimum fluidisation velocity of particles reach the minimum. In addition, the bubble rising velocity was also simulated. The relationship between them was established using a model, and the error was within 5%. This provides an effective way to predict the bubble velocity, study the distribution of bubble phase, and improve the stability of bed density. "SynopsisSilicon carbide nanopowders were produced using a microwave-induced plasma process operating at 15 kPa absolute and at atmospheric pressure. Methyltrichlorosilane (MTS) served as precursor, due to its advantageous stoichiometric silicon-to-carbon ratio of unity, allowing it to act as both carbon and silicon source. Argon served as carrier gas, and an additional hydrogen feed helped ensure a fully reducing reaction environment. The parameters under investigation were the H2:MTS molar ratio and the total enthalpy. The particle size distribution ranged from 20 nm upwards, as determined by SEM and TEM micrographs. It was found that an increase in enthalpy and a higher H2:MTS ratio resulted in smaller SiC particle sizes. The adhesion of particles was a common occurrence during the process, resulting in larger agglomerate sizes. SiC layers were deposited at 15 kPa with thicknesses ranging from 5.8 to 15 µm.IntroductionIt is well known that methyltrichlorosilane (CH3SiCl3 or MTS) decomposes to form silicon carbide (SiC) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) as shown in Equation [1]. "The coal strength parameter is used in operations such as the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing/grinding equipment. However, coring or cutting prismatic specimens from coal for the standard strength tests is difficult, and sometimes not possible. For this reason a method for the indirect determination of coal strength from easy tests would be useful. In this study, the predictability of coal strength from the needle penetration test was investigated. This is a very easy and practical test method. Point load and needle penetration index (NPI) tests were carried out on coal specimens from Çayirhan coalfield in Turkey. The point load indexes were converted to the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values by using the general conversion factor. The UCS and NPI values were evaluated using regression analysis. A strong linear relationship was found between the two parameters. The conversion factor for the UCS-NPI ratio is 0.35 for the tested coal samples. It is concluded that the UCS of coal can be predicted from the NPI.IntroductionKnowledge of coal strength is important for the selection and design of mechanical excavators and coal crushing and grinding equipment.
