This paper is one of a series on mining methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. It describes briefly mining practices at the Sunrise iron mine of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corp., Platte County, Wyo. The Sunrise mine is in the Hartville iron district in east-central Wyoming (fig. 1). The district covers part of the Hartville Mountains, a region of moderate relief in which erosional features have been formed by the dissection of a low plateau. Altitudes vary from 4,300 feet along the North Platte River to 6,000 feet in the uplift. The climate is semiarid, with hot summers and winter temperatures below zero for short periods. Grasses, cacti, yucca, and low desert shrubs grow at lower elevations. Cottonwood and boxelder trees and willows grow along permanent streams; juniper and coniferous trees are confined to the higher elevations.

COBALT is a silvery gray metal which closely resembles nickel in appearance and properties although it is somewhat harder and more brittle. It is rather widely disseminated and is estimated to make up about 0.001 percent of the earth's crust as compared to 0.020 percent for nickel. Cobalt, one of the four ferromagnetic elements, is used for many magnetic applications. It is oxidation resistant, a property which when coupled with its moderately high melting point of 1,495° C., makes it useful in high-temperature applications. Although cobalt had been used by man as a coloring agent for glass and other ceramic products for 4,000 years, it was not isolated as a metal until 1742 and not established as an element until some 40 years later. Early in the 20th century, cobalt began to be used in alloys, and soon these applications displaced ceramics as the major consumer of cobalt. The use of cobalt in alloys gave considerable stimulus to production, and the world output of cobalt increased rapidly, rising from 400 tons in 1920 to 1,400 tons in 1930 and 5,500 tons in 1940. With the advent of the jet plane in the mid 1940's and the consequent increased need for cobalt-bearing high-temperature alloys, cobalt production again increased, reaching 7,900 tons in 1950. The increased demand for cobalt during the Korean war coupled with a large demand for stockpiling caused world production to more than double within the next 10 years, reaching a peak of 17,300 tons in 1959.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a project which addressed objectives concerning irrigation of native plants and inoculation of native plants with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi. The specific irrigation objectives were 1) to demonstrate the performance capabilities of solid-set irrigation for reclaimed mineland conditions, and 2) to demonstrate and evaluate three irrigation concepts under two separate water supply conditions. The VAM inoculations were to assess irrigation benefits in establishing VAM relationships for transplanted native species. Following the seasonal demonstration (May to September 1983) at 3 separate mine sites, conclusions were made that apply to the 6 state Western mining industry. The demonstration sites were located in Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Positive conclusions were reached for 1) the use of soil moisture sampling with or without irrigation, and 2) the selection of solid-set sprinklers as the irrigation method. The conclusions about the irrigation concepts and strategy were mixed, due to the short-term (1 season) nature of the project. No conclusions could be reached for the VAM inoculations because the study time was too short.

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to the coal-mining industry's underground and open-pit mines that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

Investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of methods of upgrading tar obtained by low-temperature carbonization of lignite showed that ß,ß?-oxydipropionitrile, ß,ß?-iminodipropionitrile, and ß,ß'-thiodipropionitrile were effective solvents for extracting aromatics (aromatic hydrocarbons plus polar compounds) from coal-tar neutral distillate fractions. Batch extraction showed that these solvents extracted approximately the same percentage of aromatics from various neutral oil fractions boiling between approximately 170° and 350° C. In continuous countercurrent extractions using oxydipropionitrile and iminodipropionitrile, approximately 30 to 35 vol.-pct, and 65 to 70 vol.-pct, of the aromatics in 170° to 350° C. neutral distillate oil were extracted at room temperature when solvent-to-oil ratios were 2:1 and 12:1, respectively. As the concentration of aromatics in the neutral distillate oil fraction decreased, the capacities and, to some extent, the selectivities of these solvents for the remaining aromatics decreased. Aromatics were isolated from the extracts and the solvents recovered by washing the extract fractions with a low-boiling paraffinic hydrocarbon such as heptane, using hydrocarbon-to-extract ratios of at least 2:1. The heptane wash removed most of the aromatics but only part of the polar compounds (compounds containing oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen) from the extracts. The recovered oxydipropionitrile and iminodipropionitrile, containing polar compounds, were effective in extracting aromatics from neutral distillate oils. The contaminated solvents showed essentially the same capacities and selectivities as the pure solvents.

Three types of X-ray analytical instrumentation were compared for applications in the secondary brass and bronze industry. The instruments were a conventional X-ray spectrograph, a portable X-ray spectrograph, and a radioiso-topic X-ray analyzer using balanced filters. The following two general applications were considered: Rapid identification for sorting scrap metals and quantitative analyses to provide guidance in the melting and casting of alloys. Twenty-three analyzed copper-base alloys were used as standards. Although the alloys varied widely in composition, matrix correction procedures were not necessary except for copper. The conventional X-ray spectrograph provides positive identification of the alloys and quantitative values for the six elements investigated--aluminum, copper, iron, lead, tin, and zinc. Equivalent results were obtained with the portable X-ray spectrograph for those elements whose characteristic X-rays are in the wavelength range of the instrument. The radioisotopic X-ray analyzer distinguishes certain groups of alloys and provides quantitative determinations for copper, lead, tin, and zinc. The sensitivity of the analyzer was marginal for the determination of small concentrations of elements of atomic number 26 or lower.

This report describes an investigation in which we used iron-doped diesel fuel to generate metal-bearing diesel particles and a subsequent analysis of the particles using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). For this study, DPM was generated by a 1.5-L diesel engine and the fuel was doped with ferrocene to enhance the level of iron in the system. The exhaust particles were collected on TEM grids and analyzed using the Philips CM12 TEM/EDS instrument. Results show that when the iron-to-carbon (soot) ratio (Fe/C) in the engine is low, the exhaust particles have morphologies similar to those for the undoped case, but at a threshold Fe/C value of 0.013 (for this engine), homogeneously nucleated metallic nanoparticles are formed and begin agglomerating. The number and size of these nanoparticles increase with level of doping. Metal-bearing particles that span a wider size range are also formed. Agglomeration of metallic and carbon particles is observed in two distinct modes: attachment of iron primary particles (5–10 nm in diameter) to carbon agglomerates, and coagulation of iron agglomerates (20–200 nm in diameter) with carbon agglomerates. Results of this work imply that as new engine technologies reduce soot levels in the engine and/or levels of trace metals in the fuel are increased, the generation of metallic nanoparticles may ensue, creating a potential health concern. Drilling for roof bolting has created a new dust problem for the coal-mining industry. Drilling is inherently dusty, and control of dust produced by drilling vertical or nearly vertical holes is much more difficult than control of that produced by drilling flat or down holes.4/ Also, the dust produced by roof drilling differs in composition from that produced by drill-fur, or cutting the coal face because it contains a significantly greater amount of free silica and therefore presents a greater potential hazard of silicosis. Roof bolting has been practiced successfully in the mines of the St. Joseph Lead Co. in southeastern Missouri for over 20 years, but it was not until 1947 and 1948 that large-scale roof-bolting experiments were conducted in coal mines.5/ Although the need for dust control in conjunction with roof drilling was recognized from the beginning, the development and acceptance of roof bolting progressed so rapidly during 1949 and 1950 that solution of the dust problem lagged behind other engineering phases of the technique.

In recent years the demand for products of greater refractoriness has placed an ever-increasing emphasis on ceramic materials, including the metallic oxides. Magnesia (MgO) is one of the most important of these oxides, exhibiting, as it does, high electrical resistivity, high slag resistance, and a melting point of 2,800° C. However, magnesia has a tendency to hydrate in the presence of water and to volatilize above 1,500° C. in certain kiln atmospheres and has a comparatively low resistance to thermal shock. Because of these disadvantages, the previously listed advantages inherent in this material have been largely overlooked, and research on magnesia has lagged behind that on oxides such as alumina and zirconia. This bibliography has been prepared in an effort to present to Government and industry a comprehensive picture of the prospects for greater utilization of magnesia as a refractory material in future research. To provide as selective and accurate a collection as possible, the references included cover magnesia in a pure state, not as an additive or in combination with other materials. However, several references discuss the effect of minor impurities (less than 5 percent of the total) on the properties of magnesia, as these papers are considered to be of special importance. A few references to articles on forming techniques are also included, as they are valuable additions to the overall treatment of the subject. The processes used in obtaining and refining the raw materials are adequately covered in earlier publications and are excluded. A number of references are omitted as being of questionable value in enhancing the cumulative study of pure magnesia as an ultra-high-temperature refractory material.

The importance of producing more oil from known petroleum reserves has placed increased emphasis on the application of secondary-recovery methods. Recently published reports3 4/ describe the results of waterflooding in Roane and Pleasants Counties, W. Va. (see fig. 1.) This report describes the Barron Kidd Oil Co.?s Santee waterflood project, Maxton sand, Burton field, Church district, Wetzel County, W. Va. (See fig. 2.) The Federal Bureau of Mines hopes that these reports will stimulate interest in improved waterflooding techniques, thereby discouraging premature abandonment of oil leases.

[Before 1914 Germany held a virtual monopoly on the world supply of potash for fertilizer purposes. During the World War, potash shipments to the United States ceased, and recourse was had to domestic supplies. High war-tine prisms stimulated interest in various sources, and domestic production increased rapidly. A field experiment was performed in a production unit of an operating copper room and pillar mine to compare the support capabilities provided by resin and mechanical roof bolts. Resin and mechanical roof bolts were alternately installed in eight intersections in a single entry. Rock mechanics instrumentation was installed to measure roof sag, bed separation, convergence, bolt pullout, torque, and strain. Bolt cost and installation time are included. Two analyses of the test were made. The analysis of the rock mechanics data showed there was no definite difference between the two bolting systems. From a broader analysis on a mine-wide basis it was concluded that resin bolts gave better support. A critical view of the experiment is given in the appendix.

To deftne the capabilities of a nonexplosive excavation concept, the Bureau of Mines conducted reduced-scale laboratory tests of a mechanical excavation tool called a rock splitter. The splitter investigated was capable of applying combinations of radial and axial loads to rock when placed in a predrilled hole. Experiments conducted with the tool in concrete, limestone, and granite proved it capable of excavating all three materials. Break geometry in these three materials was the same, which encourages the prediction of performance in all rocks. The design of the radial-axial loading splitter's feather components significantly affected the tool's performance. It appears the design of this in-hole component should be tailored for the rock to be excavated.

The 7-mile Flathead Tunnel, located in the central Salish Mountains of northwestern Montana, was constructed between 1966 and 1969, With the contract awarded April 19, 1966, drill and blast tunnel excavation began September 30, 1966, and was completed June 21, 1968, in 488 tunnel-driving days, Peak advance was 66 feet per day. On June 27, 1969, all tunnel concrete lining was completed. Average wall and arch concrete placing rates exceeded 1,700 cubic yards daily, with nearly half of the concrete placed during a severe winter season. Major cost savings in concrete tunnel lining were achieved through a value engineering clause in the contract. Achieving consistent results and high rates of placement in concrete lining ranked equal to ground control in overall tunnel problems. Ground control problems exceeded expectations and were of continual concern throughout excavation, One support collapse in the tunnel and one portal slide condition developed during construction. Critical surface geologic exposures were largely obscured; only a portion could be accurately projected underground, An instrumentation program to gather basic data on rock defamation near the heading face for support purposes was a pioneering effort. The Flathead Tunnel was placed in service on November 7, 1970.

The purpose of these studies by the Federal Bureau of Mines was to determine the feasibility of refining low-grade hafnium by an inert-gas-shielded molten-salt electrorefining technique to produce a hafnium metal meeting reactor specifications. The techniques were adapted from those used success-fully for titanium electrorefining. Three electrolytes containing hafnium chlorides were developed from which deposits having a Brinell hardness of 170 or below were recovered. A KC1 + NaC1 + HfC14 electrolyte produced deposits in the hardness range of 140 to 165 Brinell. Deposits with a hardness range of from 132 to 152 Brinell were pro-duced from an electrolyte composed of KC1 + LiC1 + HfC14. A third electrolyte composed of NaC1 + K3HfC17 produced deposits with a hardness as low as 139 Brinell. In a fourth electrolyte, composed of NaC1 + K2HfF6, a measure of refining was accomplished, but under the test conditions no metal meeting specifications was recovered; none was softer than 174 Brinell. A number of metallic impurities were reduced in quantity by the electro-refining process, notably iron, which normally was reduced from 250 p.p.m. to less than 50 p.p.m. Magnesium generally was reduced from 680 p.p.m. to less than 80 p.p.m. Manganese content was also reduced by the electrorefining process. Sponge containing 90 p.p.m. Mn yielded deposits containing a maximum of 50 p.p.m.; some deposits contained only 10 p.p.m.
