This paper has been abstracted from a forthcoming Bureau of Mines bulletin on the concentration of copper ores in North America. GENERAL DEVELOPMENTS IN CONCENTRATING COPPER ORES FROM 1912 TO 1932 During the east 20 years the milling of copper ores as practiced in the larger concentrators has chanced to such an extent that comparatively few of the machines in use at the beginning of this period remain in service today. Concentrating Practice in 1912. In 1912 the usual equipment for concentrating copper ores comprised jigs for the coarser sizes, tables and sand vanners for the intermediate sizes, and vanners for the finer crushed and ground material. Rolls operated in series under graded crushing conditions, were in common use for the liberation of the copper minerals; grinding by Chilean or Muntington mills ordinarily was confined to the coarser tailings of jigs and tables.

A recording thermobalance ,vas used to determine the rates of oxidation of mol-ten tin over the temperature range 550°-900° C. Oxidation rates were found to vary widely for a given temperature, as previously reported by other investigators. 1 X-ray diffraction data indicated that the probable cause of these variations was the development of preferred orientations in the crystals forming the oxide film. No reasons for the differences in degree of preferred orientation were discovered. For relating the weight of the oxide formed (w) to the time of oxidation (t) an equation of the form wn = kt was found to best represent the experimental data. INTRODUCTION In the course of conducting investigations on the feasibility of using selective oxidation techniques for the purification of various metals in the molten state it was soon discovered that data on the oxidation of molten metals and alloys were very scarce. In contrast to the many hundreds of publications on the oxidation of metals in the solid state there are relatively few articles on the rates of molten-metal oxidation. In view of this scarcity of data, it was decided to institute a series of investigations into the oxidation processes of molten nonferrous metals and alloys with the expectation that the information derived could be put to practical use in developing and improving refining processes based on selective oxidation. This report is the first of a series in which oxidation data for molten nonferrous metals and alloys are presented.

The bagging of dry pulverized products using fluidized air packers creates severe respirable dust problems in many surface mining operations. During bag filling, excess air and product blows by the bag valve/nozzle interface. After bag ejection, dust blows out of the bag valve. During conveying and handling dust is released from the bag valve and dirty bag surface. Overexposure of the bagging machine operator and bag handlers is common. This report describes the development and testing of a new dust control system for bagging machines. The system features a new bag clamp design to reduce product blowby during filling. A controlled vacuum system removes excess air from the bag before ejection, eliminating the problems after bag ejection and during conveying and handling. The system has shown significant reductions in dust exposure for both bag machine operators and bag handlers. These reductions are achieved with no significant effect on total mill productivity.

Fourteen straight-run asphalts were prepared in the laboratory from bitumens obtained from three sources: (1) native bitumen from Rozel Point, Utah, (2). bitumen extracted from Athabaska bituminous sandstone at Canada, and (3) bitumen extracted from Edna bituminous sandstone outcropping in San Luis Obispo County, to seven asphalts with penetrations ranging from 19 to 287 at 77 F. were prepared from each of the bitumens. The yields of the prepared asphalts ranged from 74.5 percent for a 27-penetration asphalt from the Athabaska bitumen to 99.5 percent for a 271-penetration asphalt from the Rozel Point bitumen.

The development and status of technology for producing titanium from U.S. resource materials are summarized in this Bureau of Mines report. Commercially feasible processes and investigations of alternative procedures are reviewed in order to identify techniques that could make existing operations more effective or areas in which future research may lead to the development of new production methods. Procedures are described for producing concentrated titanium dioxide from starting materials such as sands, massive deposits, and mineral processing residues containing rutile, ilmenite, and perovskite; producing and purifying titanium tetrachloride from concentrated rutile, ilmenite, and titaniferous slags; reduction of titanium tetrachloride to titanium sponge metal using metallic magnesium or sodium; purifying and consolidating titanium sponge and scrap by arc melting or induction melting techniques; purifying sponge, scrap, and alloys by molten salt electrorefining; and electrowinning titanium from chloride salts.

An hydraulic-powered reel system to minimize peak tension transients in shuttle car trailing cables has been theoretically designed and analyzed using a computer. A single spring-loaded take-up sheave stores or gives up cable to maintain tension within specified limits. Controls have been incorporated to shut down the vehicle before all cable is removed from the reel and to de-energize the cable in the event of a reel/cable jam. Full-scale hardware configuration drawings sufficient for manufacture of a test system have been completed.

"INTRODUCTION Clay beds of southwestern North Dakota were investigated to determine (1) the average alumina content of the clays in four principal areas of occurrence, (2.) which, if any, would be the most feasible method of extracting alumina from the clays, and (3) whether the clays had any other commercial uses.During the investigation exposed sedimentary beds were examined for clay and the thickness and areal extent of outcropping clay beds in the more promising areas were measured. Four-principal areas of bentonitic clays, comprising 6,967 acres in Stark, Slope; and Billings Counties, N. This report is one of a series published by the Federal Bureau of Mines to describe methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Navajo Uranium Division of Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, Inc., mines uranium from several deposits of carnotite-type ores, which lie buried in the Lukachukai Mountains on the Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache County, Ariz. The country is rugged and isolated Constructing and maintaining roads has been a continuous task. The ore bodies occur within the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation and are similar to other such deposits on the plateau. The current mining activity in the Lukachukai Mountains is a result of uranium-ore discoveries in 1949, although the Navajos undoubtedly knew of the outcrops of yellow uranium minerals long before that time. The ruggedness of the country and the heavy soil cover over much of the surface hampered prospecting, but probably the main reason the ore was not found sooner is that no one took the trouble to look for it in the Lukachukai Mountains.

Fires in anthracite refuse banks are troublesome and may become exceedingly costly to combat. Instances are known in which refuse-bank fires have grown to such magnitude that entire mining properties have been endangered. In one instance4/ a refuse-bank fire cost the mine management several hundred thousand dollars to extinguish. The exact number of fires formerly existing or now active in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania is not known. There are hundreds of anthracite refuse banks in this region, some very high and large in area, that have never caught firs, although a few are over 50 years old. This would indicate that spontaneous ignition of the material in these banks is improbable, a conclusion confirmed by recent laboratory research.

In 1989, Alabama's nonfuel mineral industry produced a State record of $463 million of nonfuel mineral commodities, an increase of $4 million over that reported by the State's mineral producers in 1988. The new record marked the fourth consecutive year in which mineral production increased over that of the previous year. Alabama ranked 22d among the States in total mineral value. Cement, stone, and sand and gravel were the three leading mineral commodities produced, accounting for 77% of Alabama's total mineral value. During the year, there were several acquisitions by Alabama cement and stone companies, and the only tantalum mine in the United States completed its first full year of operation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Two sin-diameter 6x25 fiber core (FC) ropes were degraded on a bending fatigue machine, These were the second and third ropes in a series of tests on this construction and size rope. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope to determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that once a wire rope nears the end of its service life, both deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength begin to increase at an accelerated rate.

Conventional flame channelling operates continuously at over 120 db --flame-drill channelling at a maximum of 95 db. The latter process was developed under this program. Individual drill holes are spaced to leave narrow rock webs. Sound and dust passing from the hole are effectively treated by a muffler and water injection.

This Bureau of Mines report discusses the electric-arc reduction of zirconium and hafnium oxides with carbon yielding a metal-metallic carbide mixture. The carbon to oxide ratio in the feed determines the metal to carbide ratio in the product. A sample of this product was produced -or testing as a feed for the deBoer iodide-dissociation process. A new technique for producing pure carbides is described, which uses the intense heat of the arc to volatilize the carbide. "INTRODUCTION The pilot-mill concentrator at Boulder City, which has a nominal capacity of 40 tons per day, was planned and built to investigate further the beneficiation of domestic manganese ores that have been concentrated successfully in the ore-dressing laboratory. As milling of manganese ores in general is a new field, it is necessary to prove the success of laboratory processes by means of large-scale operations employing standard milling equipment, and thus to obtain engineering and metallurgical data essential to designing and operation of full-scale concentrating mills.The first ore tested in the pilot plant was the Three Kids Annex manganese ore from the Las Vegas Wash area 15 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nev. The deposit was worked for its high-grade ores during the First World War From 1930 to 1939, 4,500 feet of diamond drilling was completed by a private company. Diamond drilling started by the Bureau of Mines in November 1940 and completed in July 1941 aggregated 6,600 feet. Exploration by the private company and the Bureau outlined reserves of about 1,000,000 tons of ore assaying plus 28 percent manganese. A much larger tonnage of lower-grade ore also was outlined by the drilling.Because of its physical nature, the Three Kids Annex ore had long proved unamenable to concentration by ore-dressing methods. The ore is a mixture of manganese oxides (wad) filling the pores and to some extent replacing a silt composed of very fine grains of volcanic tuff, quartz, feldspars, other silicates, and clay. Some gypsum occurs as fillings along fracture planes. The ore is light and very porous. Upon wetting, it disintegrates into granular but friable particles and a large amount of slime. It is these characteristics that make the ore so difficult to concentrate."

As part of a research program for recovering alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated a lime-sinter, caustic leach technology for anorthosite. This report discusses the unit operations--feed preparation, sintering, and leaching. Acceptable pellets for the bench-scale sintering studies were prepared from mixtures of minus 200-mesh anorthosite and limestone using water alone as the pelletizing agent. Heating pellets at 1,270° to 1,360° C for periods of 0.5 to 2 hr, followed by a 15-min soaking period at 700° C and cooling to room temperature, produced a sinter that dusted to more than 90 pct minus 65 mesh. The weight ratio of limestone to anorthnsite was critical in producing sinter exhibiting good dusting and leaching characteristics. A ratio of 2.0 was optimum for the bulk samples of anorthosite and limestone used in this research. Leach solutions from lower ratio sinters were unstable; gelation became progressively more severe with higher ratio sinters. Leaching the dusted sinter with 10-pct Na2CO3 at 60° C extracted 85 to 90 pct of the alumina in a product solution containing about 50 g/l A1203. Leach residue in contact with pregnant solution tended to set up as a rigid gel as a result of cementation, comp action, and gelation. The presence of a calcium-sodium zeolite [(Cn,Na2)6?(Al2Si04)12?27-3OH20] in the ungelled residues seemed to be the main difference between gelled and ungelled residues.

The objective of this contract was to investigate time-integrated and real-time methods for determining the diesel exhaust particulate concentration in underground mines, in particular, coal mines. The microorifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI) is recommended for obtaining the time-integrated measurement of the size distribution. The mass concentration of diesel exhaust particles can be obtained from the particle size distribution of mine aerosols. On a mass basis, diesel exhaust particles are primarily in the submicrometer size range while coal dust particles are larger. Size distribution measurements made in the laboratory and in three underground coal mines exhibited two distinct modes with the diesel exhaust particles in the smaller particle mode and the coal particles in the larger particle mode. The point of separation between the two modes occurred in the 0.7 to 1.0 pm size range. The separation was found to be independent of mass fraction of the diesel exhaust particles, particle concentration and sampling site. Methods recommended for further consideration as real-time monitors of diesel exhaust aerosols in mines are photometers and filter pressure drop techniques. A preclassifier would be required in both cases to separate the larger dust particles from the sample. The Metrex Mineral/Diesel Photometer should also be investigated further once the electronics problems are eliminated.

This report describes the approach, procedures, and results of a program to develop training materials for roof bolter operators. The objective of the program was to design and produce a training sequence which would prepare roof bolter trainees for job performance. Data was collected and analyzed using the general procedures of Instructional Systems Development (ISD). Input data came from a previous roof bolter training analysis program. This data was expanded and structured through a series of ISD steps: objectives hierarchies, media selection, syllabus, lesson specifications, and train¬ing materials development. The resulting program consisted of an ordered sequence of 15 lessons. The media mix for the 15 lessons included lectures, slide-tape lessons, and hands-on instruction using operational roof bolters. Contents of all lessons were reviewed and approved by the Bureau. The key recommendations were to (1) validate the materials and measure relative effectiveness of media formats; (2) survey mines for training resources and conditions - match materials to user capabilities, rather than selection state of the art technology/media; (3) develop job performance aids (JPAs) rather than simulators; (4) create a style/media/JPA development guide for use in future projects of this kind.

In this study by the Federal Bureau of Mines Pennsylvania anthracite from the Eastern Middle field was oxidized by concentrated nitric acid at steam-bath temperature for 24 to 1,000 hours. The quantitative data obtained include yields of nitric-acid soluble and insoluble products and the distribution of carbon and ash in each. The acid-insoluble residues were examined for solubility in aqueous sodium hydroxide. With a sodium hydroxide concentration of at least 1 normal, a portion of the residue could be extracted in the form of a true solution. With lower alkali concentrations, peptization occurred. Alkali solubility of the residue increased with length of oxidation. However, when expressed in percentages of original coal weight, the alkali solubility remained essentially constant after 192 hours of oxidation. This suggests that the alkali-soluble products are converted to acid-soluble products at the same rate as the original coal substance is converted to alkali-soluble material. Microscopic observations of the peptization of the acid-insoluble residues revealed a gross micellar physical structure. The action of nitric acid is apparently not restricted to the surface of a coal particle. The acid penetrates the particle through the pore structure, dissolving some of the ash and altering the bonds between the coal micelles. The bond alteration, as indicated by ultimate analyses, involves the physical and chemical adsorption of the components of nitric acid. Some of the altered bonds are not thermally stable; this instability is shown by the complete loss of peptizing ability when the acid-insoluble products are heated above 200° C. This loss is accompanied by the evolution of water, oxides of nitrogen, and hydrocyanic acid.

During and immediately following World War II, the heavy demands for steel required the mining of unusually large quantities of coal for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The largest demand for metallurgical coke is in the Appalachian region, which comprises central and western Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, eastern Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. This demand is satisfied by coke made from coals within the region; consequently, the reserves of coking coal in this region are being depleted more rapidly than reserves in other coal-producing regions. The supply A' high-quality coking coal during the war was inadequate, and some coke were forced to use inferior coals. The coke produced from these inferior coals adversely affected the rate of production. Another national emergency probably would produce a similar condition, and in the interest of -national security, the Munitions Board of the National Military Establishment requested the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the reserves of coals suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. All bituminous coals in the Appalachian region are coking, and as the coal that produces the better metallurgical coke become depleted, other coal previously considered inferior will be used. The general trend is toward the use of lower-quality coals for metallurgical purposes.
