A rotating disc geometry was used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of the cementation of cadmium, lead, and silver from dilute aqueous solutions. This work is an extension of studies carried out on the Cu-Zn and Cu-Fe systems for which the reaction rate was found to be completely solution phase mass transfer controlled.When the amount of material deposited was greater than 0·2 to 0·4 mg/cm2 there was an apparent enhancement in rate which is attributed to the formation of a roughened deposit. This same phenomenon was observed in the Cu-Zn and Cu-Fe systems. Again, the rate of reaction of each system investigated was found to be solution-phase mass transfer controlled.

The Greymouth Coalfield contains New Zealand's greatest known resource of bituminous rank coal. The coals are of very high quality, with low ash and sulphur contents and a range of other properties that makes them desirable for a wide range of uses. In fact only a few producers around the world today can offer coals with such exceptional properties. This suggests that Greymouth coal has potential as a premium export trading commodity. These assertions have been largely confirmed by a comprehensive exploration drilling programme funded by Mines Division û Ministry of Energy between 1979 and 1984. The program, forming part of the NZ Coal Resources Survey, was carried out under contract by Lime and Marble Ltd. The drilling of 49 deep, predominantly cored, holes at 1000 m intervals over the coalfield has generated a vast amount of data. It has shown the existence of three major potentially minable coal deposits containing 233 x 106, 33 x 106 and 15 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. Investigations have at this stage only identified targets and these estimates represent 'in ground' resources, not recoverable reserves. Recent geological studies as well as past and present mining have clearly highlighted the problems posed by the complexity of the coalfield geology. The coalfield lies within a mobile zone in the earth's crust known as the Paporoa Tectonic Zone, which has been active from at least mid-Cretaceous to the present time. Currently this factor poses the greatest obstacle to the determination of mining possibility of the, defined deposit and ultimately will strongly influence any future mining development. The Greymouth Coalfield has, however, had a long and eventful mining history spanning the last 120 years, where 32.5 x 106 tonnes of coal has been won from over 100 mines. In spite of the problems facing development, the large quantities and exceptional quality of the remaining coal will act as a strong inducement to persevere with this difficult but potentially valuable resource.

The mining residues at the abandoned copper mine site Pe±a de Hierro, located at the headwaters of the Rio Tinto, contribute substantially to the pollution of the river with high loads of Fe, As, Pb, Zn and Cu. The pH of the outflow ranges from 0.5 to 2.4 in the dry and wet season, respectively. One heap composed of alternating layers, which were deposited parallel to the slope, was investigated in detail. Unsorted blocky to fine materials including gossan material, pyritic volcanics, ashes from pyrite combustion and slate were observed here. The top of the heap has a gentle slope and a hill contouring channel-rip morphology. The initially rugged surface was smoothed by heavy rainfalls filling up the pores of the blocky material with fines. These fines are capable of storing the water for a prolonged time, providing an extended reaction time close to surface in a dry climate at extremely low pH conditions (one to four). All minerals, pyrite, mica, barite and even quartz (probably due to F released from dissolved mica) have been digested and silica gel precipitates have formed a stable and quasi impermeable 100 ¦m layer with very low porosity (<5 area per cent, estimated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging). The silica layer itself is covered by Fe-oxy-hydroxide (ie FeOOH) coating (10 ¦m) and seals a 1 - 5 mm thick stable hardpan. This hardpan covers the channels and part of the rips almost entirely, guiding the rainwater subhorizontally towards slopes and sinkholes. By geoelectrical measurements, a 3D-resistivity model of the internal structures and the bedrock relief underlying the heap was generated. Internal structures relate to lithological changes in a number of layers. Zones of low resistivity may be attributed to washed-in fines within the mega pore system, whilst zones of high resistivity close to the surface probably reflect the advanced stage of drying beneath aging hardpans. The water movement at the surface was investigated by an artificial precipitation experiment with monitoring of the subsequent changes in resistivities.

This paper describes an apparatus which was developed to study solid-vapour equilibria and presents results which were obtained during a study of the FeCI3-AlCI3-CI2 system. Analysis of the results showsthat fractional desublimation might offer a means of achieving a useful separation of the iron and aluminium chlorides produced by the chlorination of bauxite. The results, presented in the form of isothermal vapour pressure curves covering the range of temperature 160-200°C, support the earlier findings of Semenenko et al (Dokl Akad Nauk SSSR, 154: 42-43 (1964)) that the solid phase contains two terminal solid solutions.The equilibrium constant for the formation of the mixed dimer, FeAICI6, was approximately 4. The latent heat of sublimation of aluminium chloride varied from 18 to 26 kcal/mole AI2CI6 for solid compositionsfrom 0.9 to 0·5 mole fraction FeCls3.

Low-level aeromagnetic data available in digital form have been combined to produce a new 1:100 000 scale map of total force anomalies of the Coromandel region, New Zealand. The map incorporates data from 13 surveys flown between 1977 and 1990 and shows the regional magnetic pattern as well as more detailed localised anomalies. In addition to magnetic anomalies, the map also depicts data to aid interpretation, including small-scale maps of topography, geology, magnetic intensity gradient and apparent magnetisation. The primary magnetic anomalies of the Coromandel region are associated with Late Miocene and Pliocene volcanic rocks, but have been locally modified by intense hydrothermal alteration caused by geothermal activity. Epithermal gold-silver and porphyry copper deposits are associated with zones of hydrothermal alteration. The map of magnetic anomalies can be used as an aid to mineral exploration and the interpretation of the processes that control the distribution of mineral deposits in the region.

Particular attention is given to the role of the CME in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. The paper details the types of CME membership that are currently in existence. The paper argues that a strong and vibrant CME is vital to secure the resources sectorÆs growth and development in future years.

Land rehabilitation at Golden Cross is reviewed, 8 years after mine closure in 1997/98, from the perspectives of a Peer Reviewer (land rehabilitation) and a Regional Council Officer (Resource Consents compliance). Land rehabilitation items we discuss include: management of restored pastures, native plantings (on-site riparian and block plantings and off-site environmental riparian enhancement plantings), wetlands (on-site tailings lake and sediment ponds littoral zone plantings, and basement of the open pit; and off-site wetlands enhancement plantings), pine plantations on-site and on surrounding land, stabilization of the Tailings Lake Embankment (landslide) and Open Pit capping, capping of acid-mine-rock, stability of discharge channels, buildings and amenities, public access for recreation, educational uses, and future management of the site. Pest control has helped to conserve the rare and endangered HochstetterÆs (Leiopelma hochstetteri) and ArcheyÆs (L. archeyi) frogs, and a regionally significant stand of rare swamp maire (Syzygium maire) has been conserved and fenced.

Since the last occasion on which I spoke to you on this subject there has been a considerable increase in the mechanical ventilation of Western Australian mines.The following table compares the figures for 1939 with those of 1941. The type of fan most commonly used is the limit load fan. On account of its higher mechanical efficiency it has very largely superseded the multivane fan with forward curved blades.Two fans of the propeller type are in use and these have given very satisfactory service. This type of fan also has a high mechanical efficiency particularly at the correct duty for maximum efficiency.The maximum efficiencies obtainable from the various types are, for "multivane" 670/0, for "limit load" 75%, and' for aerovane 7810/0.References to propeller fans with variable pitch have appeared in the technical press, but no detailed d~scription has been issued. The advantages of these fans for mine ventilation are not obvious. An aeroplane is required to operate over a wide range of duties, while the speed of the motor for maximum efficiency is pl'actically constant. In such circumstances the propeller can be adapted to the particular work it has to do by varying the pitch of the blades. In a mine the speed of the fan can be varied to suit.the conditions, and it would appear that variable pitch is not necessary while there is a reasonable range of fans to choose from.The question of the correct position for the fan still comes in for considerable discussion. Exhausting fans at the surface have the support of time and custom, and in many cases this represents the only reasonable arrangement. Such fans should be fitted with an evase, especially in the case of fans with a high outlet velocity such as the aerovane types.It is claimed that there are advantages in having the fan at the surface where it is readily available for inspection and maintenance. Experience has shown that these advantages are more apparent than real. Fans will run for long periods with no attention other than occasional greasing and cleaning, and modern electric motors will run without attention for very long periods.In some instances the expense of a power cable to take current to the fan may be saved by placing it on the surface, but in the majority of cases...

Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. Further geochemical and mineralogical studies may help to target the potential underlying porphyry system.CITATION:Chan, J S-L, 2015. 'The politics of mining in New Zealand' is a topic I chose myself because of its importance in the future of the New Zealand mining industry. There are many people in the industry who are cynical about politics, cynical about politicians and definitely cynical and often critical of political decisions. In fact, many industry people say they don't want to get involved in politics, they just want to get on with the business of exploration or mining. The point of my address is that politics is important and the industry cannot afford not to participate in the political process.

A GREAT deal of attention has lately been given to the discussion as to the education required for engineers, and especially for mining engineers. The Institute of Civil Engineers has had a committee's report on it which has come to some interesting and valuable conclusions.The Institute of Mining and Metallurgy had a few years back a very long discussion on the subject, and the subject appears to be one of perennial interest to similar societies. Two recent addresses by Prof. Kernot, as president of the Victorian Instituteof Civil Engineers, are among the most interesting and practical of the contributions to the discussion. Engineers seem to feel either that the coming generation has not the same capacity to benefit by the training that has made themselves what they are, or that such training has turned out in themselves inefficient men, and that they must consequently struggle to obtain a better one for their successors. For not only is there a desire to extend existing instruction to cover the advances of science, but there seems to be a general desire also to make a completely radical change in the methods.It is not necessary to observe that education does not mean the imparting and acquiring of information, but rather the cultivation of the faculties so that the best use can be made of them and of any information acquired. For instance, a man is not educated who has by heart his lectures and the contents of his text-books, but that man is who remembers little of the actual wording of his text-books, but is able to find anything required in them...

Cave propagation is a complex process due to interacting variables such as mine geometry, rock mass heterogeneity and complex structural networks and stress fields. The Ernest Henry sublevel cave (SLC) is directly below an open pit, which provided an opportunity to observe and measure rock mass failure as the cave initiated and propagated through the pit wall. This paper describes interaction between the open pit and SLC as well as rock mass failure mechanisms observed from the start of the SLC to surface breakthrough.Cave propagation and slope failure mechanisms were found to be governed by intermediate structures, while the cave shape was largely controlled by cave-scale faults. The open pit, production-level geometry and production draw strategy were also important factors for cave and subsidence growth. Cave propagation was episodic and asymmetric in shape due to the orientation and relative position of geological structures, combined with the effects of the increasing SLC geometry and drawdown from the underlying production levels. The precursors and failure mechanism of a 2.5 Mt wall collapse are also reviewed in detail.Cave growth was simulated using a 3D, non-linear, discontinuum finite element model coupled with Newtonian Cellular Automata. Model results are compared to field observations and monitoring data to determine the accuracy of forecasts and compared models versus actual rock mass response during cave propagation.CITATION:Campbell, A D, Ah Mu, E and Lilley, C R, 2016. The Morobe Province of central Papua New Guinea (PNG) has been mined for gold for nearly a century, although it is only in the past decade that large-scale modern mining commenced. The Hidden Valley gold-silver project began construction in mid-2006 and production by August 2009, and is located in the mountains above Wau in the headwaters of the Watut River. The mine is owned and operated by the Morobe Mining Joint Venture (MMJV), which also owns the Wafi-Golpu project, comprising the Wafi gold deposit and Golpu copper-gold deposit, situated in the Watut River Valley. Together they represent a potential mine of the scale of Ok Tedi or Bougainville or bigger. The MMJV is owned in equal shares by Newcrest Mining from Australia and Harmony Gold from South Africa. Although Hidden Valley was the first large-scale mine in PNG to engineer and build a tailings storage facility, poor environmental management during construction and early operations led to significant erosion of waste rock and sedimentation impacts throughout the ~200 km length of the Watut River. Since then, substantial efforts have been made to improve environmental management, especially waste rock placement and storage and water quality management. While the impacts from the Hidden Valley project appear to be reducing, the saga has heightened concerns by many along the Watut River and across PNG about ongoing impacts from mining.This paper presents the results of an ongoing project in the Morobe Province conducted by the Mineral Policy Institute examining the historical, current and future impacts of mining, including community views, social and environmental impacts and the monitoring and regulation of mining. Overall, there is a clear need to more fully integrate social and environmental issues into life-of-mine planning and go above and beyond regulatory requirements. Zircon producers are often required to lower impurity levels to meet customer specifications as most of these impurities adversely effect the end use. For example, zircon sand in foundry applications needs to be free of any surface impurities (eg clay, gibbsite and goethite) which otherwise could cause sintering or fusion between cast metal and the zircon mould. Light coloured ceramic grade zircon, typically low in iron oxides and titania, is preferred in ceramics applications. The presence of impurities in zircon sands is a problem in the magnetic and electrostatic separation stages of their concentration. Previous work (Aral et al, 1997) showed that impurities in zircon sand concentrates occurred in the form of stains on grain surfaces, discrete gangue minerals and in the mineral grains. The gangue minerals such as rutile, garnet, xenotime, monazite, spinels, ilmenite, and aluminium silicates in the concentrate in some cases (Aral et al, 1997) contribute significantly to the impurity content of the concentrate. A careful hand picking of the impurity grains from a Western Australian zircon sand showed that the impurity content of the concentrate could be lowered significantly as a result of the removal of the surface stained grains and gangue minerals. The hand-picked ædirtyÆ fraction, comprised about eight per cent by weight of the concentrate, and consisted mostly of iron-oxide/hydroxide-stained zircon, silica grains and rutile, and occasionally ilmenite, monazite, gahnite and other (unidentified) coloured grains. The chemical analysis of the remaining æcleanÆ fraction showed that the major impurities (Fe and Ti) were reduced significantly (Table 1). The reduction in the uranium content was about 30 per cent. The other measured impurities, P, Mg, Al, Th, and Ca remained mostly unchanged as shown in Table 1. The contribution of ilmenite to the overall iron content of æcleanÆ zircon was insignificant as it comprised about 0.1 per cent weight of the æcleanÆ zircon. Rutile was the major source of titanium contamination (about one per cent by weight). Recent work (Aral and Calle, 1999) on zircon sand concentrates from the Murray Basin showed that, under the electron microprobe, the bulk of the impurities occurred in the dark back scattered electron (BSE) regions of the zoned zircon grains. The impurity contents of the light BSE regions and unblemished (unzoned) grains were low. The impurity content in zoned zircons has been investigated on single, relatively large, crystals (McLaren, Gerald and Williams, 1994; Smith et al, 1991; Romans, Brown and White, 1975). These studies generally aimed to investigate the incorporation of U in zircon as zircon is used extensively for U-Pb geochronology owing to its relatively high content of uranium. Smith et al (1991) identified a striking difference in composition between the areas of lower (dark BSE) and higher (light BSE) average atomic number in the zoned zircon. Their work showed in particular that the zones of lower atomic numbers contained very significant amounts of trace metals such as Y, REE, Nb, U, Al, Fe, Ca, Ba and, by difference H2O. In this paper the impurity distribution in zoned zircon grains was investigated on statistically significant number of grains before and after a leach treatment. The distribution of impurities was also measured in unblemished areas to compare the results.

Fire-clay blocks lining the combustion chambers of zinc concentrate flash-roasting, furnaces operating at 1,000-1,200° C. have suffered moderately rapid deterioration due to slagging. The attack is accentuated by high temperatures, and is probably caused by lead oxide volatilized from the roasted concentrate.Resistance of refractories to attack increased with increasing alumina content from 30 to 45 per. cent but at 90 per cent alumina spalling was troublesome. Magnesite bricks were'subject to some spalling, but some types may lie satisfactory. Chrome and chrome-magnesite bricks spalled seriously.Material thought to be suitable for use as a monolithic lining slagged badly and an alternative may be tested.INTRODUCTIONThe Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd. uses two multi-hearth furnaces and four flash or suspension roasting furnaces for the roasting .of zinc concentrates at its Risdon Works. The hearth roasting plant has been described previously by Forster (1949).A brief descriptioI1 of the first three flash roasters was given by Gordon and Forster (1955). A fourth flash roasting furnace began operation early in 1957. This furnace is somewhat larger than the earlier furnaces, and the designed capacity is also higher, auxiliary equipment being altered to suit. An important structural difference between the older furnaces and the fourth flash roaster is that the walls of the combustion chamber of the new furnace are lined with high alumina fire-bricks instead of fire-clay blocks. Thischange was made because the fire-clay blocks in the older flash roasters had shown s-evere wastage due to slagging by lead derived from the concentrate.
