Iron Road Limited (IRD) is currently developing the Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) at Warramboo on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The project consists of a 30 year open pit mine, magnetite processing facilities, standard-gauge railway and deep water, Cape class capable port. Major South Australian government approvals have been received and funding arrangements confirmed.The 4.5 Bt Mineral Resource (3.7 Bt Ore Reserve), the largest in Australia and among the largest globally, is to be mined to produce 24 Mt/a high-grade, 67 per cent Fe, magnetite concentrate. This in-demand, premium product has a P80 of ~100 µm, suitable for both direct sinter feed and an additive in pelletising.The extensively drilled, homogeneous orebody is unique in both geology and mineralogy; only averaging 15 per cent Fe yet coarse-grained with almost negligible phosphorus and sulfur content. This has allowed significant opportunities to tailor the mining method to the orebody, utilising both optimised blasting as first stage comminution, as well as in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) to reduce the heavy haulage diesel fleet and optimise the pit shell.Approximately 1 Mt/d of total material, ore and waste, is required to be moved from the pit daily, introducing materials handling challenges, overcome by a flexible IPCC set-up, multiple overland conveyors and an exacting mine plan. Non-conventional waste and tailings storage is utilised to allow for significant water savings, progressive rehabilitation and minimisation of land impact.The processing facilities utilise both the magnetic and density properties of the magnetite to beneficiate the ore. The coarse-grained nature of the ore is exploited to minimise comminution yet still liberate a high quality product. Utilisation of modular construction methods allows risk reduction during construction and reduced pumping requirements during operation.This paper highlights the uniqueness of the CEIP, with focus on the mineralisation of the orebody, and the beneficial impacts this has on both the proposed mining method and processing. The use of High Rate Thickeners has gained wide acceptance in the mineral treatment industries. The design of these units is characterized by an efficient deaeration and flocculation chamber, and introduction of the flocculated feed solids into a preformed floc bed zone. By these means the settling process is accelerated and consequently High Rate Thickeners achieve a significantly higher throughput per unit area than conventional thickeners.   The object of a control system on a High Rate Thickener (HRT), as on a conventional thickener, is to obtain the required underflow density and overflow clarity at all feed conditions. The feed conditions which may vary include volumetric and mass feed rate, pulp density, particle size and particle type. A conventional thickener has a large volume and cross sectional area, and changes in performance occur slowly û the operator has time to observe and react to these changes to maintain control. On a HRT, there is a much reduced residence time and therefore control parameters need to be reset more frequently. Although manual control is possible, the use of automatic control systems is therefore desirable to avoid excessive operator attention, while optimizing control of density and clarity. Automatic control of a conventional thickener is usually achieved by an underflow density loop which regulates the rate of withdrawal of underflow. A turbidity meter is sometimes used to measure overflow clarity and regulate the addition of a coagulant or polymer flocculant. These measures are not adequate on a HRT, because they would not give optimum control and could lead to excessive flocculant use. To achieve optimum operation in a HRT, the floc bed level should be maintained above the feed inlet point in the thickener. This bed level has become the key variable around which most control systems have been designed. However, a number of problems have occurred which has resulted in poor control, or only partial control of thickener performance. We will describe some of these problems, and a solution which is simple and effective.

The importance of reducing the moisture content of fine coal, the nature of the retained water, and the means of its removal are discussed. A statistical technique, using a balanced block design, was used to isolate the significant factors determining water content of a coal filter cake. The most significant factor was particle size distribution. A simplex evolutionary operation (evop) was used to determine the optimal quantities of additives required to produce the lowest moisture content for a selected coal size. For this optimum condition (18·6 Ib H20 per lOO Ib dry coal), additions of 0·045 Ib magnesium ion, 0·0026 lb Separan AP30, and 0·098 Ib Aerosol OT, per lOO Ib dry coal were required. The work illustrated the uses of a statistical evop technique for the determination of optimal conditions in industrial research projects.

The Pilbara Block is a nucleus of Archaean rocks which lies in the North West Land Division of Western Australia, and it constitutes a mineral province that has been divided into two areas-the West Pilbara Goldfield and the Pilbara Goldfield.In the West Pilbara Goldfield two contemporaneous environments are represented by laterally equivalent volcanic and sedimentary successions which together comprise the Roebourne Group. The two successions are lithologically similar to the classical Warrawoona (volcanic) and Mosquito Creek (sedimentary) successions of the Pilbara Goldfield; but in the West Pilbara Goldfield there is no sign of the erosional break which separates the Warrawoona Succession from the Mosquito Creek succession. The Roebourne Group and the igneous rocks which have intruded it belong to the Archaean Pilbara System.Evidence of preconsolidation movement and igneous intrusion into unconsolidated sediment suggests that tectonism and igneous activity, localized along lines of fracture in an unidentified basement, beganbefore lithification was complete. Movement was primarily vertical, and persisted into the Lower Proterozoic.Vulcanicity and chemical sedimentation, accompanied by a diminution of detr:tal sedimentation, is thought to have caused a relative enrichment in the metal content of the middle part of the Roebourne Group; and the metal may have been remobilized during diagenesis and metamorphism, and localized in zones of dislocation formed both before and after consolidation of the sediments.INTRODUCTIONThe name "Pilbara" has been widely applied in the area under discussion, and to avoid confusion the various uses are summarized below.1. Studies of the Main Seam in the Rapahoe Sector of Greymouth Coalfield have shown that the proportions of palynomorphs and palynomorph groups vary vertically within the seam, but remain laterally consistent. Subsequent examinations of other seams in the Rapahoe Sector have demonstrated that the changes in palynomorph proportions observed in the Main Seam are specific to that seam, effectively providing a seam 'fingerprint'. Such a characteristic signature may be used to identify the Main Seam where faulting or seam splitting confuses seam correlation between drillhole intersections. Palynomorph assemblages are derived from the original plants which formed the peat mire, and yield information on mire conditions such as climate, mineral matter input and chemistry. These depositional factors influence coal properties such as mineral content, volatile matter yields and coal breakability. Palynological data can therefore assist in development of depositional lTIodels for prediction of coal quality variations. Several other, thiner seams in the Rapahoe Sector have been demonstrated to also contain recognisable palynomorph assemblages, suggesting that other seams may also possess distinct palynomorph abundance profiles.

The prospect of utilisation of phosphate ores which contain high P2O5 values associated with Al and Fe has produced a great deal of interest over many years. Processing options have generally been based on the utilisation of by-products which were required to offset the processing costs.   This paper presents a range of processing options which have been investigated at laboratory or technical scale on phosphate ores which predominantly consist of crandallite, CaAl3(PO4)2(OH)5.3H2O and millisite, Ca(NaK)Al6(PO4)4(OH)9.3H2O. Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and Mt Weld (Western Australia) phosphate ores are good examples of such feedstocks. It is expected that these processes may also be applicable to such phosphate ores from other locations.

In the Ngakuru area, zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lake sediments and ignimbrites. The deposits are associated with sinters, hydrothermal eruption breccias, and quartz-adularia altered fault breccias: all indicators of a shallow epithermal environment. Several of the deposits are adjacent to epithermal gold prospects. Zeolites are most abundant in lacustrine tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation, a 100-300 m thick sequence of siltstone, tuff, diatomite, sandstone and conglomerate. The formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 270 Ka, and is unconformably overlain by alluvial sands and gravels which are younger than 20 Ka. Individual zeolite deposits contain 30-80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified tuff beds. The tuff beds are locally overlain by diatomite. The tuffs are composed mainly of glass shards and pumice clasts, with minor volcanic plagioclase, quartz and biotite crystals. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, K-feldspar and smectite are also present. The distribution of the Ngakuru Formation is controlled by northeast trending normal faults, which separate it into the Ngakuru and Guthrie grabens. A silicified (quartz-adularia altered) hydrothermal breccia along one of the fault zones suggests that the faults acted as feeders for heated water that caused the deposition of the zeolite minerals. Some of the zeolite deposits are adjacent to sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccias. The location of the sinter about 20 m above one deposit indicates that the zeolites were formed at a depth of 20 to 70 m below the paleosurface. The hydrothermal eruption breccias contain clasts of altered ignimbrite, which contain geochemically anomalous gold and silver values. By analogy with their occurrence in active geothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, mordenite and clinoptilolite in the Ngakuru deposits probably formed at temperatures of 60-150oC from near-neutral pH waters as a result of interaction with glass-rich tuff beds. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits are therefore interpreted as shallow hydrothermal alteration zones within larger epithermal gold-bearing systems.

Iron Ore - Mineral Processing Overview Several years of iron ore price increases, coupled with a period of strong global demand for raw materials, presented iron and steel producers with unprecedented costs and difficulty procuring the demanded high quantities of iron ore. These conditions spurred many companies to investigate new ore bodies and also reassess past decisions (such as divestment of captive iron ore mines that ensured dedicated supply or a move to reliance on the 'spot market' instead of long term contracts with suppliers) and revisit alternative sources of iron units, including low grade deposits, tailings reprocessing, Ti-rich ores, and iron sands. To properly upgrade these iron sources requires a complete battery of mineral processing techniques. Within different regions around the world, operations and technology have developed to specifically beneficiate the local ore bodies. This paper attempts to bring these different general processing techniques together to allow insight into various common and proven methods of iron ore beneficiation. This paper further explores the current trend to develop global iron ore reserves, and discusses the methods to beneficiate and successfully reduce and smelt iron ore using Outotec's physical separation, direct reduction and smelting technologies for final production of pig iron and slag. Use of these various technologies may allow treatment of what was typically considered a tailings stream into a profitable product.

The iron ore deposits of the Port Hedland district of North Western Australia are associated with band'ed sedimentary iron formations that form part of the local succession of folded and faulted Archaean volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The iron formations are regarded as the protore beds or sources of the iron which became concentrated by supergene processes to form commercial grade iron ore deposits.Iron oxide deposits occurring in situ within the protore beds are considered to be of residual-replacement origin, due to supergene leaching of gangue minerals and' deposition of secondary iron oxides in their place, Two types of deposit have been recognized. Lode deposits are deep lenses of massive hematite located adjacent to major faults. These deposits are thought to be very old and to have originated by supergene processes during the long period of erosion represented by the major unconformity between the Archaean rocks and the overlying Proterozoic beds. The other type, known as crust ore deposits, are shallow cappings of hematite and goethite on hills formed by the outcrops of steeply dipping protore beds. These deposits could have originated as far back as the early Mesozoic and it is possible that the ore-forming process is continuing at a slow rate at the present day.Deposits formed by erosion and re-deposition of material derived from pre-existing residual-type deposits are known as derived deposits. These include conglomerates and scree accumulations of various types and ages and pisolitic deposits formed by supergene leaching of transported detritus. Derived deposits range in age from early Proterozoic to Recent. Golden Cross is a volcanic-hosted, low-sulfidation, epithermal Au-Ag deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield. Irrespective of the rock type (andesite versus dacite), hydrothermally altered wallrocks are enriched in K, Rb, As and Sb around Au-Ag mineralised veins of the Empire vein system and stockwork. Sodium and Sr are strongly depleted around these veins, whereas Mg and Fe are locally depleted. Calcium and Si display mixed behaviour, varying from unchanged to depleted to enriched. Other elements including Al, Ti, Mn, Zr, Y, and Nb show little change or are immobile during hydrothermal alteration. Element enrichment and depletion trends are directly related to the degree of alteration and the alteration mineralogy. Addition of K and Rb and converse loss of Na and Sr in intensely altered wallrock surrounding veins corresponds to the replacement of igneous plagioclase by hydrothermal adularia. Sodium and Sr occur in moderately altered rocks on the margins or in æhard barsÆ that contain plagioclase. Locally, elevated Si concentrations and depletion of Mg adjacent to the Empire vein system reflects intense silicification of the wallrocks and the replacement of mafic minerals by quartz rather than by chlorite. The geochemical zonation patterns at Golden Cross are very similar to those at the McLaughlin deposit California, and shallow levels of the active Broadlands Ohaaki geothermal system. Therefore, determination of K, Na, Rb, Sr, and Ca enrichment and depletion patterns provides insight into alteration intensity and mineralogy that is complimentary to traditional trace element analysis of As, Sb, Hg, Au, Ag, Zn, and Pb used in the exploration of shallow level (< 500 m) epithermal Au-Ag deposits.

THE furnace described in this paper was installed and has been used by the writer for the melting of rich gold-bearing material, and has given complete satisfaction. It may, therefore, prove of interest to other metallurgists who are faced with a similarproblem. A furnace of this type should be most suitable for the reduction of "cyanide preeipitate," "charcoal ash," "anode sludge," &c. formerly the melting was done in fire-clay crucibles, using coke or crude oil as fuel, but this method is costly, slow, and unsatisfactory. A small water-jacketed blastfurnace was also tried on this material after briquetting it, but was discarded in favour of the electric furnace. The furnace may be described as a simple form of the Heroult resistance furnace, with an adjustable upper electrode and a fixed bottom electrode. This is in accordanee with Stansfield's classification of electric furnaces. The heating is mostly due to the resistance offered the current by the molten slag. The melting chamber consists of a steel drum 14 in. in diameter and 21 in. high, and is lined with silica bricks specially made to fit the shell. The internal diameter is G in. The bricks contain 92 % silica, are made from calcined quartzite bonded with fireclay, and are similar in composition to those used for lining steel converters. They are set in a mixture of finely-ground quartzite and clay, and well dried out. The shell is bolted to a steel plate, which forms the decking of a truck running on rails, so that the furnace can be moved under ahood for carrying off the fumes. A cast-iron slag spout is bolted to the shell below the tapping hole, which is 4 in. from the bottom of the shell. Iron ore in the Middleback Range area has a density and susceptibility contrast with adjacent rocks, and gravity and magnetic methods are applicable to exploration for it. The gravity method is satisfactory whether the ore mineral is hematite, magnetite, or limonite; the magnetic method is suitable for detecting ores which contain magnetite, such as some hematite ore, magnetite ore, and possible ore in the form of magnetite-bearing schists. jaspilites, and carbonate rocks.Geophysical exploration began in 1948 and is still in progress. The methods which have been used are aeromagnetic (83 per cent), ground magnetic (13 per cent), gravity (3 per cent), and others (1 per cent). Ground magnetic surveys have been made wherever aeromagnetic surveys recorded large anomalies. The gravity method is being used to investigate those parts of the area considered most favourable for ore occurrence.Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the geophysical data has been made and the rocks causing selected anomalies tested by bores.Magnetite in the Middleback Group rocks produces the major magnetic anomalies in the area. The average magnetite content of magnetite-jaspilite, which is the commonest rock type, is 33 per cent by weight and that of magnetite-carbonate at the Iron Duke-Iron Duchess is 50 per cent. These rock types also contain hematite and the average total iron content of the former is 35 per cent and of the latter 50 per cent.INTRODUCTIONThe geology and iron ore resources of the Middleback Range area were described by Miles (1954). In the extraction of level bridge pillars in the South Mine by square-setting methods the general practice is to work transversely from the hanging wall in narrow sections three or four sets wide to the depth of the bridge-usually three sets. When the working block attains an area of twelve square sets, sand filling is run in, either by pneumatic (Proceedings No. 123, 1941) or hydraulic methods, in order to control the settlement of the general area and prevent the development of undue weight in the stope. Upon completion of the filling operations, or coincident with them, ore breaking is resumed and the transverse section of the bridge pillar gradually reduced. Using a scientific-principled definition of global socio-ecological sustainability can be a useful basis for planning precious and base metal mining projects. The mining industry faces key challenges of; viability of the minerals industry; the control, use and management of land; national and local socio-economic development; environmental management; materials stewardship; and access to information. Using a framework for strategic sustainable development to assess the current reality of mine project development has resulted in identifying areas of strength and opportunities for improvement between current best practices and a desired vision of sustainability constrained by science based principles. These gaps indicate opportunities to strengthen current strategies, tools, and actions with a deeper understanding of socio-ecologic systems and a first-order, principled definition of sustainability, enabling success in moving towards achieving a sustainable society, ie sustainability. Evaluation of mine project development and their impacts on ecological and social systems using a systems perspective which recognises the underlying principles of operation, delays, feedback loops and response to change highlight specific opportunities to create value for social, economic and ecologic systems. Envisioning this future for mining projects within a sustainable society can be done by evaluating their development and operations guided by the sustainability principles. Performance indicators play a key role in measuring progress towards achieving sustainability goals yet it is necessary to consider whether indicators capture the whole systems perspective. Connected to this broader view, indicators can contribute much value to the mining industryÆs sustainability journey. This paper examines how current processes for mining projects can be developed using a whole systems perspective and measured using holistically designed performance indicators.

OWING to two large falls of ground which resulted in serious accidents occurring towards the end of 1908, it became evident that the "open chamber" system then in use was unsuitable for the conditions existing in the Mount lVIorgan mine. It will be admitted that in all mining operation, the first consideration is the economy of the system adopted, combined with its safety and ability to give the desired output. A sectional system with square sets has been introduced into the mine, in which due attention has been paid to these factors. In this paper a brief description of this system will be given. An outline of those previously used will be ineluded, as it is necessary to understand the eonditions which existed in the mine at the initiation of the sectional system. Outside the actual mining methods employed, various points that might prove of interest will be touched on.The square set system of mining has been in use throughout the stopes in the gold ore in the upper levels of the mine since underground operations were started in Mount Morgan.

The paper outlines events at the Collinsville State Coal Mine, Queensland, leading to the practice of full face multiple shotfiring in bord and pillar development places. The 1954 disaster is referred to, and factors involved in simultaneous shotfiring in coal are discussed. Promising preliminary multiple shotfiring tests at the Colliery are described, as well as the resulting routine measures adopted, and the changes involved. The subsequent inducing of two outbursts under safe conditions by remote multiple shotfiring is given as justification for the changes made.INTRODUCTIONFollowing a disastrous instantaneous outburst (1.0.) of coal and gas at the Collinsville State Coal Mine in 1954, the necessity for inducer shotfiring for the control of possible further outbursts was established. However this mine, immediately classified as gassy after the 1954 outburst, is subject to the general restrictions pertaining to gassy mines which at present preclude the use of inducer shotfiring due particularly to the non-existence of a permitted exploder for more than six shots, and further, because permitted multipleexploders are not designed for remote firing through long lengths of cable. This situation was met by arresting or reducing progress in the production places, thereby reducing the danger of outbursts while means were being considered to achieve overall maximum safety.In August 1957 two full faces were successfully blasted in experimental simultaneous rounds. At an early stage of the examination of most prospects, samples are taken; and the sample values obtained play an important part in determining the subsequent history of the prospect. It is, therefore, important that. eveJJy effort should be made to interpret asfully as possible the meaning of the observed results. In this connection, it is suggested that examination of the assay values of mine samples by simple statistical methods may bring to light information of considerable value, which might otherwise be missed.Although expert statisticians may derive more information from the available data, those who are, like the writer, less proficient mathematically, may also benefit by applying quite simple statistical methods. At least they will develop a useful habit of thought bywhich they become aware at all times that sampling results only provide estimates of the truth, but that an assessment of the precision of such results may be possible. The object of this paper is to provide some evidence of. the truth of these statements, by theuse of a few very elementary statistical calculations.General.The idea that any mine sample is subject to error from a variety of causes is a very familiar one. Doubt always exists with regard to the representativeness of a perfectly cut sample, and other errors may arise through imperfections of sample cutting, crushing, splitting and assaying. Some causes of error may give rise to "constant" errors, others may cause variable but one-sided "systematic" errors, and others again may bring about variable results without any tendency toward bias on the average. In statistical language, mine sample values are subject to errors which may have either assignable causes or chance causes. The former are those which can be isolated, or should be capable of isolation, while the latter are those remaining when all assignable causes have been removed. Magnetite cenospheres 40-270 I/m in diameter have been found during the combustion of pyrite concentrate.Micrographs of the surface and internal structures are presented together with comment on the mechanism of forrnation.The similarity to cenospheres found during the combustion of pulverized fuel was noted and speculation raised to their contribution to the dust and fume load in flash smelters.
