This paper describes results from a gender study for a new mine in Pajala, a small community in northern Sweden. Using a gender perspective, the study examines migration, education, local culture, the labour market, and work organisation as problems and opportunities in the regional context for the planned mine. The most obvious ‘gender issue’ for the Swedish mining industry is the very low percentage of employed women, which is even lower among mining workers. To recruit the best people, a company actively needs to attract both women and men; however, the mining companies find it difficult to recruit women as cultural, labour market and educational traditions as well as the mining companies’ own cultures often make it difficult for women to find work in the mining industry.The Torneå river valley, the region surrounding Pajala, has a gender-segregated labour market and gender-stereotyped culture and few young women live in this traditional and oldish region. Many young people leave the region and this is especially true for women. Compared to the rest of Sweden, there is a low educational level, especially among the men. In the mining companies, as in many other male homosocial workplaces, the workplace culture has strong connections to a certain type of traditional masculinity (laddishness, a kind of ‘macho-style’) and for a long time this has excluded women. ‘Gender’, however, is not only a question of recruiting women to a male-dominated industry. An organisation that discriminates according to gender can become inflexible, hindering communication, learning, innovations and change processes. In mining companies, this can manifest itself in hesitant attitudes among the miners about safety as well as organisational and technological development.This study found that companies establishing a presence in this region should develop a strategy for how to deal with and manage the risks and opportunities in the surrounding society (the regional culture) as well as inside the company (the mining culture). This need to be strategic will also be required of future mining companies as they will face higher demands on safety, gender equality, and technology to become modern, efficient and lean organisations.

The mineral industry is an important element in the human environment and in varying degrees contributes to the general standard of living throughout most of the world, both by supplying the basic materials required for heavy industry, transportation, construction, scientific equipment, and many labour saving tools and also by its contribution to the international economy.When projecting population growth and per capita resource utilization against a finite amount of nonrenewable mineral resources, it is apparent that at some future time, if the established trend continues, the supply of industrial minerals will progressively become exhausted according to their relative scarcity and world demand.In one way or another all of nature's mineral resources are used in the sel'vice of man. Some of the products of their manufacture are essential to the survival and further development of our civilization, others are luxuries, desirable but not essential. Marine vessels are essential to maintain a flow of resollrces around the world, and as trade increases the size of the fleet will grow and the quantities of metals needed will be greater.The commodities they transport, may be used in an inefficient or extravagant manner causing unnecessary depletion which may adversely affect the activities of future generations. An example that comes readily to mind is fuel oil, the international transport of which uses a vast tanker fleet. When refined, large quantities of motor spirit are used in motor vehicles. The U.S.A. alone uses 70 billion gallons annually in the 90,000,000 automobiles in use.Much of this is used in private cars-of which there is one for every 2'3 people-for transport between home and city. Well organized community transport would serve the same purpose, conserve a scarce commodity, take some of the stress out of livingdriving in a major city can hardly be considered a relaxing experience-and minimize the problem of atmospheric pollution.Whilst man has demonstrated his great versatility...

Three computerised sets of minerals information are being developed by New Zealand Geological Survey in co-operation with the Resource Management and Mining group of the Ministry of Energy: 1. Geological Resource Map: a file of information on the location, geology, geochemistry, production, and potential use of individual occurrences of aggregate, mineral, geothermal, coal, oil, and gas resources. The computer program can be used for search and retrieval of information and the production of maps and tables. The data is being published as a series of 1:250 000 maps with accompanying text and tables. 2. A method for the detection and analysis of tin in cassiterite ores is discussed. An empirical relationship was established between the tin content of an ore sample and the percentage absorption that this sample produced in a Mossbauer experiment. The time taken to complete an assay with this method is much less than with any of the methods currently in use. The equipment can be adapted readily for use in the field.

In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink–?float analysis. Using traditional sink–float method it is not possible to sample and automatically measure. This fact, as well as time, cost and safety aspects, as well as required and manageable sample size of the sink–float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria. This is especially important as performance levels of separator plants can be maximised if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes available in time. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilises at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy X-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy X-ray transmission and image processing.If used as a standard laboratory device the continuous build-up of the washability curve allows to evaluate the statistical significance of the sample size during measurement.The measuring method can even be improved if it is combined with an automatic sampling system that feeds a continuous and representative particle stream to the analyser. Then the value of the collected data increases considerably since the washability data are additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The washability curve can be derived and is continuously updated based on the particles measured during the past time interval. Older curves and results are stored in a database and can be retrieved for later reference. This technology now enables automated sampling and integrated automated measurement, which was previously not possible.This incorporation of an automated washability monitor at a representative sample gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation. AIR-LOCK AT No. 14 SHAFT.Some time ago it became desirable to raise and lower the McBride tunnel men to save them walking the inclined tunnel, about a mile in length, with a dip of nearly 600 ft., and a maximum gradient of 1 in 4. The main Upcast shaft, No. 14, was, therefore, equipped for winding the men. As this shaft was the main ventilating shaft for the McBride tunnel mine, it was necessary to take the greatest precautions against leakage of air. The writer therefore devised the concrete structure shown in Plate 1.The structure, as shown, surrounds the shaft inside the poppet legs. As the men are wound on double-decked cages (twelve men to each deck) provision is made at both top and bottom for the two decks to be loaded and emptied simultaneously. The doorsover the sky shaft, shown in the drawing, have been cut out and the sky shaft has been close-timbered with a double layer of T. and G. flooring boards, with building paper between, nearly up to the thimble frame, a small hole only being left for the winding rope topass through. The space between the ramps is glazed with plate glass to allow the winding-engine driver a good view of the pit top.The men are wound from two levels, 302 ft. and 611 ft.2. Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along theWaiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of æplatinumÆ were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni.   Exsolution of osmium and iridium from Pt-Fe alloy and Pt-Fe alloy from iridium is observed Several PGM host mineral inclusions which vary from single to poly-phase, display rounded to equant outlines and range in diameter from greater than 100 ¦m to less than 5 ¦m. Olivine and Ni-sulphide inclusions are only present within IPGE alloys. Pt-Fe alloy, cooperite, braggite and sperrylite host Cu-Fe sulphides, a wide variety of PGM, clinopyroxene, amphibole, magnetite and plagioclase within inclusions. Sperrylite also hosts Pd bismuthiotellurides, gold and several potassium-rich silicate phases. Similarities in inclusion phases and mineral chemistry from several localities suggest that the PGM are derived from a single (as yet unidentified), probably calc-alkaline magmatic source. This source is situated somewhere along the margins of the western Southland sedimentary basin where PGM liberated by erosion are transported down the Waiau River and dispersed eastwards along the coast by strong longshore currents.

As the prices of metals slide, financial control of mineral processing operations becomes more and more important. Control of a mineral processing operation implies measurement of grades, recoveries and losses, with every effort being made to recover more product from the same feed. Shareholders become more concerned with the transparency of the operations and the corporate governance.There is only one way to achieve this and this is by sampling and making good use of the results of that sampling. Sampling systems that provide only 'rough' figures are not good enough. Similarly, a competitive position in the marketplace demands close control of product quality. Maximisation of product output demands that the product just meet the specification so that product yield is maximised. Decisions based on precise sampling results carry less risk that those based on imprecise results.This paper reports some recent advances in sampling theory that permit full quantification of sampling distributions, not just the sampling variance as has been possible in the past. These advances can be used together with simulation methods to tie down sampling precisions and develop calculations that quantify decision making risk when using the sampling results. Northern Australia leads in world-class mineral deposits' is a bold statement. First there must be a starting point. Land north of the Tropic of Capricorn (23¦ 26' 5") will be regarded as Northern Australia covering nearly 40 per cent of the land surface of Australia. As opposed to land south of the Tropic of Capricorn, it should be regarded as Tropical Northern Australia and for the sake of brevity, (TNA) Refer Figure 1. Apart from the tyranny of distance from centres of power and population in the temperate zone, it suffered in the past from the belief that the tropics are unsuited for European workers and from the lack of infrastructure. Outstanding mineral deposits of iron, base metals, gold and diamonds, discovered and developed in the past three decades, provided the substance for the title. There are many world-class mines producing and there are mineral deposits neutralised through Government policy. TNA can maintain its lead in world-class mineral deposits provided Government policy will stop partitioning the land and decreasing that available for exploration. Let's look at what we have that is world-class. In Western TNA iron ore deposits at Paraburdoo, Mt Tom Price, Marandoo, gold at Telfer, diamonds at Argyle. In central TNA uranium at Ranger and Jabiluka, lead-zinc-silver at McArthur River, gold at the Tanami, manganese at Groote Eylandt and bauxite at Gove. In eastern TNA Mt Isa, Hilton, Century zinc-lead, bauxite at Weipa, gold at Kidston, Mt Leyshon, magnesite at Yamba and coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Those mines or deposits stand out yet are only an indication of the numerous lesser mines and of mineral deposits depending for development on market demand and/or changes in Government policy, eg 'The Three Mines' policy. Very large areas of mineral rich structures in the western, central and eastern parts of TNA are concealed below flat lying comparatively young unmineralised sediments. The Great Artisan basin sediments in eastern TNA can and do host oil shale and non metallic minerals. Nearly 40 per cent of western TNA is covered by the Great Sandy Desert. The Canning Track, with a series of 54 wells, was constructed by surveyor Alfred Canning in 1908 - 1910 with great difficulty. It extends 1700 kilometres from Halls Creek in the north to the gold town of Wiluna in the south, through the Great and Little Sandy Deserts. Gold explorers are following favourable structures extending to the north east below the sediments and sand hills covering the track. Half of central TNA's mineral structures are concealed by the Tanami desert and the Cretaceous sediments covering the pastoral regions of the Barkly Tableland and the Daly Waters to Top Springs pastoral areas. The Georgina Basin in the south eastern section is part of the concealment.

So many emergencies that crop up in mining necessitate a departure from ordinary methods that the writer has been led to illustrate a few of the examples that have come under his notice during a somewhat lengthy career; and as most of the methods illustrated are certainly outside the ordinary, it may be hoped that while to many they may convey little that is new, to the larger number some acceptable information may be gleaned whenever the occasion calls for it. Experience has shown that there can be no hard and fast rule in mine timbering that will fit the varying- necessities of different localities, and the engineer must divest his mind of all prejudices that his practice of any particular system or systems may have induced, and must direct his attention to the character of the local timber and its fitness or otherwise for the purpose he has in view. Fortunate indeed are the man and mine that can claim an abundance of good and cheap mining timber it simplifies, oftentimes, what would be, under unfavourable timber conditions, a difficult problem. In many parts of the States there is either none or at best a scrub if the latter, he has to either pigstye, balk, or bulkhead, if his ground will permit; if, not, and the necessary timber has to be imported, then some system of recovering his timber and using it over and over again may be possible. As an illustration of this, Fig-s. Nos. I and 2 show a method applied to the copper deposits of the LyellTharsis, Tasmania. The phosphorus content of the banded iron formation (BIF) and of the associated iron ore deposits in the north west of Western Australia is known to vary widely, a fact which has considerable econ~mic significance. Trendall and Blockley (1970) have described the variety of textural appearances of apatite in the Hamersley Group BlF, and suggest that apatite may account for the entire phosphorus content of the unaltered BIF.A preliminary investigation using an M.A.C. electron microprobe analyser has shown that, at least in some iron ores and in partially enriched BIF and associated shales, the phosphorus occurrence is more complicated than this. A suite of samples was examined from one location which covered the entire Dales Gorge Member and some adjoining macrobands in the Mt. McRae shale, together with samples selected for their high phosphorus content, degree of ore enrichment, and position relative to the enrichment zone. Calcium apatite was not observed in any sample of ore from this sequence, despite its ubiquitous occurrence in the BIF. Silicate mineralogy in the enriched regions also differs from that in the BIF, but this change has not yet been studied in detail.The phosphorus content of goethite in one orebody is often high and appears to be in solid solution in the goethite structure. It shows little or no variability on a micro-scale within a grain, except where theremay be a zoned enrichment near boundaries and solution channels. There is also a limited solubility of phosphorus in hematite (the maximum observed by the author is 0·1 per cent P); but where the hematite is martitic (after magnetite) its phosphorus content is always low or zero. In some bands, martitic hematite has been hydrated to goethite, and this also has a very low phosphorus content. Phosphorus was not found in the silica or silicates in the ore, and even when iron enrichment is just beginning, a limited suite of samples from the BIF suggests that the phosphorus content of the chert microbands is almost entirely in the microscopic goethite nuclei (after riebeckite) scattered throughout the chert. "Column flotation has been successfully applied to iron ore concentration since the 1980s with the goal of reducing silica content and allowing for the efficient production of pellet feed. Since then, columns have been widely used in iron ore processing due to: their lower capital and operational costs when compared to conventional cells their ability to generate higher concentrate grades and recoveries.Currently, more than 100 columns have been installed within Brazilian iron ore processing circuits for rougher, cleaner and scavenger duties. Despite it being a well-established approach, several technological advances have improved column design, accessories and performance. A sulphide ion selective electrode (ISE) is suitable for control of sodium sulphide additions in flotation because it has a rapid response to changeS in S2- concentrations, can indicate -low concentrations at differentpH values, suffers from few interferences, and is robust enou'gh to use in a pulp. Three sulphidization techniques were studied using the lSE electrode for measurement and/or control of S2- levels. Metallurgy was assessedfrom concentrate grades and copper recovery.With slug additions of sodium sulphide, sulphidizing conditions were poorly defined and reproducibility tended to be poor. Although acceptable metallurgy could be achieved by multiple additions, sodium sulphide consumption was high.Controlled potential sulphidization readily gave good metallurgy. The optimum potential of the lSE for sulphidizing was about -500 mV versus SCE, but depended on sulphidization and flotation times; suitable times were3 and 5 min respectively for three to five stages. Application of this technique to previously untested ores gave good metallurgy in a first test in spite of variation by a factor of three in the sodium sulphide requirements ofthe ores.Simultaneous sulphidization and flotation was satisfactory when conducted at an lSE potential of -450 mV versus SCE. Mixed cha!copyrite-oxide copper ores responded satisfactorily.Besides optimizing sulphidization conditions it is also necessary to optimize xanthate additions (e.g. by measuring xanthate residuals).

Whether you are an employee, contractor or consultant working in the mineral industry, there are pressures to deliver the best possible performance. Technical professionals are usually driven by an internal desire to perform to a high standard because of personal pride in their profession, but there are an increasing number of external requirements to demonstrate that the actions taken were based upon reasonable grounds and that the work conformed to current best practice. People expect these best practice procedures to be followed and governments are now requiring those tendering for contracts to be registered in some way and to be participants in quality assurance schemes. One is not immune to these pressures just because you are working in a less legislatively sophisticated developing country in the circum-Pacific rim (pacrim) region.   Among the external pressures are the general ethical requirements of the professional body to which the person usually belongs, e.g. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), which are further elaborated upon in various Codes and Guidelines on specific matters, e.g. JORC (ore reserves reports) and VALMIN (assessment and valuation reports). These are outlined and discussed. Also, AusIMM's Chartered Practicing Status (CPS) Proposal is outlined in the context of other Pacrim countries approach to registering of technical professionals, which is a way of ensuring that minimum standards of qualifications, experience, competence and repute are demonstrable to ones employer (or client), peers and the wider community, including government.   Today, in the external working scene, there are many laws (particularly those applicable to the corporate and environmental spheres), with which contractors/consultants and even employees must fully comply, or else face criminal sanctions involving huge fines and imprisonment. These, too, are outlined and discussed. One must be able to mount a due diligence defence to avoid or mitigate these consequences.   Personal liability in the context of the day-to-day performance of one's duties has thus become a major concern to the technical professional and the ways in which it can be ameliorated, or insured against, are described. However, for some mineral industry practitioners, the problem is exacerbated because. of their general ignorance of the extent of their personal liability exposure. This paper intends to address this ignorance and to heighten general awareness of personal liability issues, as well as proposing some simple ways to limit this liability.

The two methods for calibrating the parameters K and (alpha) for use in Gy’s equation for the fundamental sampling error (FSE), the duplicate sampling analysis (DSA) and the segregation fractionalised analysis (SFA) are described in detail. A case study using identical broken reef material from a Witwatersrand-type orebody is calibrated using the DSA and SFA methods and the results are compared. Classically, the form of Gy’s equation for the FSE raises the nominal size of fragments given by dN to a power of 3. Gy’s formula is a theoretical formula applicable in the case when fragments are randomly collected one by one, which is obviously never the case. This is because the fragment shape factor (f) and the granulometric factor (g) were introduced to take care of this anomaly. More recent formulae, such as those suggested by François-Bongarçon and Lyman, are empirically based formula. A later modification of Gy’s formula raises dN to the power ? (alpha), the latter term being calibrated with the coefficient K in the DSA and SFA methods. The preferred value of ? (alpha) for low-grade gold ores used by sampling practitioners in the mining industry is 1.5. A review of calibration experiments for low-grade gold ores using the DSA and SFA methods has produced values of K that vary between 70 and 170 and values of alpha in the range 0.97 to 1.30. The average value for alpha is found to be 1, rather than 3 as originally proposed in the classic form of Gy’s equation or the industry preference for 1.5. It is suggested that for low-grade gold bearing ores, the equation for the FSE should raise dN to a power of 1. Such an equation for the variance of the combined FSE plus the grouping and segregation error, now referred to as the short-term component of the quality fluctuation error (QFE1), greatly simplifies the characterisation of gold ores, which now only requires the calibration of K for a given mass and established fragment size. The implications for the heterogeneity test from the generalised equation are that provided the fragments have been screened to within a narrow size range, any particular size will return a value for K that is acceptable for use in the sampling nomogram.CITATION:Minnitt, R C A, 2017.
