The Waimumu area, 12 km southwest of Gore, is underlain by the Gore Lignite Measures, an early Tertiary fluvial sequence approximately 500 m thick resting on Triassic-Jurassic argillitic basement. The Waimumu Quartz Gravels (Pliocene) have been deposited locally and are in part due to the localised reworking of the Gore Lignite Measures. Structurally the area is dominated by the Dunsdale Fault System, a steeply dipping series of NE trending reverse faults (Isaac and Lindqvist, 1990). The Belle-Brook, Hedgehope and Parker Road sites sampled are adjacent to the downthrown (east) side of the Hedgehope Fault.The authigenic gold-sulphide association at Belle-Brook was discovered in 1987 (Falconer, 1987: Clough and Craw, 1989). Despite a very limited amount of alluvial mining a significant quantity of authigenic marcasite has developed. Authigenic sulphide trace element analysis has shown anomalous amounts of As, Ni, Cr and to a lesser extent Zn, Pb and eu (Table 1). It has been established that the nickel occurs as a colloform banded Ni sulphide, possibly bravoite, within the marcasite (Figures 1 & 2). Arsenic and nickel (re)mobilisation are well documented in the literature. Generally As and heavy metals are mobilised in the groundwater as a result of the oxidation of sulphides (ie as a result of mining). At Belle-Brook it is reasonable to assume the authigenic sulphide trace element composition reflects either localised groundwater contamination or hydrothermal mineralisation. The ore extraction rate and the incorporation of new areas are key operational parameters. In massive deposits mined by caving techniques they both control the cave back geometry, which is mostly responsible for the induced stress state around productive levels. Early detection of deviations from admissible geometries will prevent stability problems related to geomechanical hazards, helping to improve safety and working conditions and reduce the potential for lost reserves.This paper describes a mine planning tool currently in use at the El Teniente mine. This tool involves the control of the cave geometry based on rules that have been defined as a result of different studies and experience collected during the operational history of the mine.This mine planning strategy achieves an extractive mining process with lower risk than conventional planning methods, ensuring ore reserves extraction if followed as planned while reducing unexpected changes in mining sequences.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Pinochet, A and Caviedes, C, 2016. Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralised areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado , has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles: 1. could have been better utilized to first predict and minimise the environmental problems, and 2. can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

Fires are a common and recurrent unwanted event in the operation of open pit mines. In most cases, the causes of events such as fires are already æknownÆ but are either overlooked or not fully addressed in planning. Ongoing rapid growth of the global mining industry is creating a scarcity of skilled personnel, and high turnover within operations. This contributes to loss of corporate memory in risk management activities. RISKGATE« is an online risk management system designed to support and assist in the analysis of priority unwanted events in Australian coal mining operations. Funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), RISKGATE« is a knowledge management program that delivers best-practice controls for unwanted events and assists operations in staying abreast of emergent risks and threats. RISKGATE« content has been primarily developed from an association of industry experts, and enriched with input from additional academic and technological resources. In mining operations, RISKGATE« provides a continuum of knowledge and best practice for risk identification, assessment and management. RISKGATE« will assist companies in improving safety performance, operational efficiency, operating practice and training. Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was shown to catalyse biodegradation of chalcopyrite concentrates. The process was growth associated at normal temperatures (30°C) in dilute acid solution (pH2, H2SO4) in submerged cultures. Approximately 20% of the copper dissolved in 22 days in the presence of T ferrooxidans while less than 0.6% was released when bacteria were absent. In ore column leachates, the iron and sulphur oxidizing species T ferrooxidans, ranged from I04 to I06 cells/ml while exdusively sulphur oxidizing species ranged from I02 to 104 cells/ml. T ferrooxidans predominated below pH 3 while other sulphur oxidizing bacteria favoured higher pH. Organisms were distributed vertically in ore columns according to pH differences, resulting from gradual acid consumption by gangue, during trickle irrigation.There was a sequential development of bacteria in leachates from fresh ore irrigated with water only. High pH sulphur oxidizers were always present, low pH sulphur oxidizers appeared within a week while T ferrooxidans took 50 days to show up. Routine monitoring of bacteria in dump leachates provided a qualitative indication of events in otherwise inaccessible ore bodies.

South32 (S32), a globally diversified mining and metals company, is listed on securities exchanges around the world (ASX, JSE, LSE), with its primary listing being on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). Chapter 5 of the ASX Listing Rules (Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), 2019b) requires a mining entity to provide a summary of governance arrangements and internal controls with respect to its estimation processes, estimates and reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves annually. As a global company, it is also important to design and implement all governance processes and internal controls which can be used consistently across the organisation. The three lines model (previously known as the ‘three lines of defense’ model) is employed across South32 to manage risk where the first line (Practitioners) designs, implements and executes processes and controls to manage risk; the second line (Stewardship) identifies material gaps and improvement opportunities in the first line by monitoring conformance with the group requirements, legislative and regulatory obligations. Second line also assists with the development and improvement of core fundamentals based on industry good practise. The third line (Group Assurance) provides independent and objective assurance over the Group’s system of risk management and control. The estimation of resources and reserves for most of the operations within South32 is managed by the Planning function. The estimation process is part of the annual Life of Operation Plan (LoOP). The LoOP identifies and assesses the strategic alternatives for the development of an operation and recommends the preferred pathway based on value and risk. The LoOP starts with opportunity framing and the updated resources as an input and ends with the short-term plan and annual budget (the outputs). Ore Reserves estimates are one of the outputs from the LoOP. All the inputs and outputs follow internal standards and procedures which includes peer review and performance reconciliation. Stewardship (Second line) which is a centralised function has standards in place to ensure compliance to internal controls and external regulatory requirements. This includes assessment of the competence of Competent Persons, technical reviews, independent audits and training in the relevant chapters of the ASX Listing Rules, Guidance Notes and Appendices. Group Assurance (Third line) which reports to the Risk and Audit Committee of the Board of Directors ensures the design and operating effectiveness of the processes, standards and procedures associated with the estimation and reporting of resources and reserves. While the level of scrutiny has a different intent for each line in the three lines model, the overall purpose is to achieve a consistent outcome across the organisation

The depth of underground mines has been increasing due to several factors, such as material demand growth and improving technology. It is a challenge to understand severe failure mechanisms such as spalling, which is caused by induced high stress. To investigate this failure mechanism under high stress conditions, intact rock blocks with small size tunnel were tested at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM). The range of rocks, such as sandstone and granite, were drilled (200 mm hole) and tested using a servo-controlled 450 t capacity INSTRON machine. The acoustic emission sensors were attached to the block mass during the experiment to investigate the seismic response prior to spalling failure. The effect of the ground support system towards the failure was also examined by comparing the seismic response of the various ground support schemes.CITATION:Kusui, A and Villaescusa, E, 2016. A thermochemical model is developed to study the two-stage smelting reduction process for ironmaking without post-combustion. Steady-state multi-material and heat balance equations are solved simultaneously to study the effect of metallisation, slag basicity, coal rank and heat loss on consumption rates of coal, ore, flux and oxygen and production rate of slag to produce hot metal of a given composition, tapped at a given temperature. The model is applied to the commercial data for a COREX-plant producing a wide range of hot metal compositions, tapped at different temperatures. The computed rates of coal, slag, flux, ore and oxygen were found to be close to the reported ones, but an exact match could not be obtained. It is found that a four per cent change in metallisation brings changes the coal rate by five per cent, flux rate by six per cent, slag rate by eight per cent and oxygen rate by 13 per cent, while a ten per cent change in basicity changes the coal rate by ten per cent, flux rate by 13 per cent and oxygen rate by 22 per cent. Further, it is found that an increase in metallisation decreases the coal rate and export gas. At a given per cent metallisation, the coal rate and the export gas are lowest for anthracite compared to all other types of coal.

Permian coal seams from the Tomago Coal Measures in the Northern Coalfield, New South Wales, were analysed petrographically and reflectance measurements made for each. Vitrite contents were moderate to high for most of the coals but for two they were very low.The mineral-matter contents were low to moderate by Australian standards. Different profiles of a particular seam could be correlated by petrographic methods.Standard seam profiles were drawn up and from these an idealized Tomago seam sequence was compiled. All the coals were of high-volatile bituminous rank. Their carbon contents, but not thcir reflectances, varied significantly with the quantity of vitrinite present.

A challenge on many industrial flotation circuits is controlling concentrate mineral grades using measurements that are provided infrequently. The mineral grades in concentrate streams are a critical performance indicator in any industrial flotation circuit. Failure to achieve concentrate mineral grade targets has significant financial consequences on a flotation operation. A violation of gangue mineral grade limits by the concentrator may also result in significant penalties.Online grade analysers which can provide reliable real time grade measurements are essential for effective grade optimisation. The Blue Cube MQi analyser (by Blue Cube Systems) has recently come to prominence for its ability to rapidly determine mineral concentrate grades online and has the benefit of operating in-stream. This has provided excellent insight into the actual process dynamics in the flotation circuit, and hence enabled real-time control and optimisation of concentrate mineral grades.MintekÆs Measurement and Control division, specialising in advanced control solutions for mineral and metallurgical industries, has had the opportunity to link the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser to the measurements provided by the Blue Cube system at the BCL nickel concentrator plant in Botswana. The project focused on stabilising the final concentrate grade while ensuring the final tailings are minimised, resulting in an improved nickel recovery. This site already had the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser for several years, but the original grade measurement device was unreliable and ultimately failed. The system was reactivated once the Blue Cube system was installed, replacing the old analyser. The Southwest Pacific is a region of active volcanism and geothermal systems. Only in New Zealand have the geothermal systems been exploited for electricity generation and industrial processing. At present, approximately 280 MWe of geothermal electricity is generated in New Zealand. A considerable amount of further exploration work is required before the total geothermal potential of the region can be assessed and before the significance of these resources can be judged against other local energy sources.

Reports of delays and cost blowouts in major study and construction projects are becoming increasingly prevalent in the resources industry. This is mainly being attributed to an escalating cost environment associated with the increased number of projects in the development to construction pipeline and a scarcity of competent skilled resources to deliver these projects. However, not all this effect can be directly attributed to the current environment. Historically the mining industry has not performed well in its ability to deliver projects according to the financial and physical parameters forecast in the feasibility study process. To manage the risks associated with delivery of major projects, resource companies need to ensure they use a standardised approach to management of their project development to satisfy project objectives and enable more efficient use of the increasingly limited available resources. Each discrete step in advancing the project from scoping study to operations needs to be integrated, reducing the amount of rework and duplication. This paper is primarily a consolidation of existing ideas on project management systems but also introduces new concepts to solve current issues. It describes the basic components of a typical mining project, the issues that commonly arise, the key attributes, and critical steps required for an effective integrated project management system covering projects from initial scoping studies through to project commissioning and operation. This paper focuses on technical study components of the mine development project with allowance for transitioning to design and construction and operation phases.

OK Tedi Mining Ltd. (OTML) is in the process of optimising the concentrator performance. One aspect that has been recently implemented is an upgrade of the existing expert control philosophy on the grinding circuit and this will be the topic of this paper. Ore grinding in SAG mills is a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) process subject to several disturbances, most typical being quick acting disturbances such as changes in ore characteristics like hardness and particle size and slow acting disturbances such as ball charge variations and liner wear. The OTML SAG mills treat ore from diverse ore bodies and receive fresh feed subject to large changes in particle size. These circumstances make these mills particularly challenging to control. In this paper, a comparative analysis is presented between the performance of the OTML SAG mill #2 before and after the commissioning of a hybrid control strategy. The strategy uses Expert Knowledge combined with advanced disturbance rejection to reduce the variability of the main process variables, especially pressure and power. It further optimises the overall operation by driving the SAG mill #2 against process constraints (e.g. high power, high motor temperature and high scats recycle rate) and maintaining the operation at or near this point. This strategy is implemented by a combination of the manipulated variables (i.e. fresh feed tonnage and % solids) at any given time.The paper will present trends and a statistical analysis of the comparative results of the mill operation over a period of months, showing a 30% reduction in mill power / pressure variability and a 12% improvement in average power drawn. An increase in throughput was also observed, but cannot be conclusively attributed to the change in mill control due to other changes that were made to the SAG mill #2 during the period of comparison. An additional benefit includes better acceptance from the operators with improved consistency of the SAG mill #2 operation across shifts.The paper will also discuss further improvements envisaged in the continued optimisation of the grinding control circuit.CITATION:Savage, C, Rodriguez, R and Metzner, G, 2013. BHP Billiton, in collaboration with Sodern and CSIRO, has developed a downhole logging tool for measuring geochemistry in situ. The FastGradeTM 100 (alternatively, FG100), exploits pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis (PFTNA) to analyse the rock. This method is based on the detection and measurement of characteristic gamma rays emitted from isotopes in the material that become briefly radioactive when they are bombarded with neutrons. The tool outputs raw spectra arising from three types of neutron interaction, namely, inelastic scattering, neutron capture and neutron activation, which occur in successive time-windows (Smith et al, 2015). The spectra contain peaks at specific energies that are characteristic of the different elements interacting with the neutrons, the gamma count of which is related to elemental concentration. BHP Billiton uses in-house data processing software to convert the measured spectra to elemental concentrations.Much work has been done to understand the tool response under a wide variety of environmental and operating conditions, including logging speed, borehole rugosity, the presence of cavities, water etc. Effort has also been directed at understanding and quantifying the current sources of error in our conventional assays due to sample collection, preparation, and laboratory instrumentation in order to use this information as a baseline to compare against the FastGradeTM 100 results.To date, the FastGradeTM 100 primary use has been as a verification tool (JORC, 2012). However, beyond this, it has considerable potential to improve productivity in both exploration and production environments due to its ability to provide geologists with assay results soon after a hole is drilled.This paper presents initial test work and tool performance, including accuracy and precision under various conditions. The Australian Centre for Minesite Rehabilitation Research (ACMRR) was established through a mining industry initiative to meet the need of industry, governments and the community for sustainable systems for land affected by exploration, mining and mineral processing activities. The Centre, which is a consortium of the major groups associated with mining rehabilitation research in Australia, has a focus on both strategic research and technology transfer and combines a wide range of multidisciplinary skills covering engineering and the physical and biological sciences. The paper briefly describes the goals, structure, expertise and research and technology transfer activities of the Centre. The major research program areas of waste rock dump and final void stability, acid mine drainage, tailings disposal, and remediation of ecosystem reconstruction are described in the context of national priorities.

The Macraes Mining Company Limited was listed on the New Zealand and Australian stock exchanges in January 1990, and the proceeds of the float were used to purchase a 70 per cent interest in the Macraes Gold Project, previously owned by BHP Gold Mines (NZ) Limited. Macraes Mining has had a 30 per cent interest in the project since May 1984, when it was incorporated. Project financing in the way of a gold loan was secured in February 1990 and construction commenced shortly afterwards. The mine construction activities were completed within nine months and the mine commenced operations in October 1990.

The importance of the Broken Hill mining field may be gauged from the fact that since the discovery of the ore-body in 1883, till the end of 1931, approximately 43,000,000 tons of ore have been raised.The lode covers a length of 31 miles, and in places is upwards of 300 ft. in width. The ore, as at present mined, consists of an intimately blended mixture of lead and zinc sulphides with silver and gangue minerals.Structurally the lode conveys the impression of a huge longitudinal arch (when viewed from the east or west), having its apex or crown near the centre of the field, in the leases of the Broken, Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., where the lode outcropped at the surface.The minimum depth of the lode in the Proprietary mine was some 500 ft. from the surface, but huge undulations, having an average pitch of 45°, carry the extensions of the arch gradually deeper, to those places where active stoping operations are now in progress in the workings of the North mine at one extremity, and the South and Zinc Corporation mines at the other. The depth of the lode from the surface, as exposed at present, is approximately 1700 ft. at these extremities.The structure and physical character of the ore-body, and its containing walls, are so complex and varied that almost every type of mining problem is met with.

Geochemical projects in progress or recently completed in the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology, and Geophysics (BMR) cover a wide range of topics and include research projects, regional studies, and prospecting programmes. However, in these notes emphasis is given to projects which are directly relevant to mineral exploration.FIELD INVESTIGATIONSStream sediment sampling, rock and soil sampling, and geobotanical surveys have been used by the BMR in a number of areas, partly in attempts to locate specific zones of mineralization, and partly to investigate the effectiveness of the various methods under different conditions of climate and topopraphy and in different geological settings.Stream sediment sampling has been most successful in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. For example, in the South Sepik area, zones of disseminated su1phide mineralisation were found to give rise to anomalies with peak values of up to 1,000 p.p.m. copper, compared with background values of about 40 p.p.m. (Dow et al., 1968). By contrast, the results of rather limited work in the Northern Territory and in the Kimberley district of Westen Australia were inconclusive.Rock and soil sampling, on the other hand, was successfully used in a number of areas in Northern Australia, particularly at Rum Jungle and Tennant Creek.Rum Jungle area In the Rum Jungle area, where uranium and base metal mineralization is mainly associated with a Lower Proterozoic black slate sequence, samples, of c-horizon soil or weathered 'rock are generally collectedfrom the bottom of drill holes, usually 15 to 20 ft deep, bored with a power-operated auger.Surface sampling indicates that such a technique would probably have shown up all the major geochemical anomalies delineated by deep sampling, but the latter gives slightly more consistent and slightly

Uplift of the antiformal ranges in Central Otago, New Zealand , has resulted in the progressive evolution of eluvial placer deposits in tectonic sediments on the range flanks and along their margins. The placers are derived from the reworking of fine-grained gold from the auriferous Manuherikia Group fluvial sediments which covered the basement prior to uplift of the ranges. Gold in the tectonic sediments at Matakanui shows a progressive increase in grainsize in successively younger sediments and nuggets in the youngest gravel sequence are up to two orders of magnitude larger than gold grains in the parent alluvial source. Most of the gold in the tectonic sediments is highly irregular in shape, commonly with delicate surface textures which could not have survived fluvial transport and are indicative of authigenic precipitation. Some coarse grains have been rounded by recycling, and further addition of authigenic gold has occurred. Placer gold values result from both physical and chemical enrichment during sedimentary recycling. Continued range uplift and back-thrusting of sediments on to the ranges results in recycling of earlier formed placer sediments. They also result in further enrichment of gold values through the incorporation of additional supplies of the parent alluvial source sediment The host sediments are widespread along the ranges and are not confined to sites of historic mining activity.
