THE increasing use of aluminum and its alloys in commercial fields has demanded a better understanding of their machining properties. This fact is exemplified by problems that have arisen in the automotive and airplane industries, but many in other fields might be cited. As pure aluminum and its alloys in their various commercial conditions show appreciable differences in their machining properties, it is not surprising that quite divergent solutions have been offered for the machining problems encountered. However, if the fundamental requirements of the most suitable cutting tools for these metals are understood, these machining problems lend themselves more readily to satisfactory solutions. Since the machining of free cutting brass and mild steel is understood by most persons accustomed to working these metals, it may serve our purpose better to first make a general comparison of the tools more commonly used in machining these metals with the tools most suitable for machining aluminum, then proceed to a more specific discussion of the individual tools. COMPARISON OF CUTTING TOOLS Cutting tools commonly used for machining free cutting brass usually have little, if any, top and side rake; they are ground on a medium to coarse abrasive wheel and used without any cutting compound or with a cutting compound that has a paraffin base. Those ordinarily used for steel have some top and side rake, are usually ground on a medium to fine abrasive wheel, and are often used with soluble-oil cutting compounds. The proper tools for aluminum and its alloys should have appreciably more side and top rake than the tools for cutting steel; should have very keen edges obtained by grinding with fine or very fine abrasive wheels supplemented in many cases by hand stoning with an oil-stone; and should be used with suitable cutting compounds whenever possible. In many cases, tools suitable for machining aluminum and its alloys are not appreciably different from tools commonly used for cutting hardwoods. The front clearance of a tool most suitable for machining aluminum and its alloys should be about 6°, the top rake from 30° to 50°, making the total angle of the cutting edge of the tool from 35° to 55°. Members of the Institute have already received a special pamphlet descriptive of the United Engineering Society building, and wilt doubtless be interested in the progress that has been made up to date-February 24th-in erecting this home for the engineering profession. The old buildings on lots Nos. 25 to 33 W. 39th St., New York, were,' removed many months ago, but final contracts for the new, building were not let until the summer of 1905. The size of the building is 115 ft. on 39th Street, and 88 ft. in, depth; the height from, the sidewalk to the top of the parapet is 220 feet. The cubic contents of the building from the. bottom of the basement floor, to the top of the roof, including the pent houses, is 2,290,000 cubic feet. The number of light's, in the building will be between 4,000 and 4,500. The air supply for Auditorium and Lecture. Halls will amount to nearly 10.0,000 cu. ft, per minute, and the exhaust. to 90,000 cu. ft. per minute. In excavating for cellar and foundations, the average depth where good rock was. found was 37 ft.-it varied, however,: from 27 to 65 ft., due to an old water-course having run through the center of the lot; this condition, and the presence of soft rock, which rapidly disintegrated when exposed to air and water, made the foundation-work very difficult. As two of the column-footings of the building have to sustain a weight of 3,000,000 11) each, the most substantial foundations are necessary; 13,000 cu. yd. of earth were excavated for the foundation and basement; and 1,600 cu. yd. of concrete were necessary, to build up the footings. In the completed building there will be about 3,500,000 bricks. Owing to the number of auditoriums, and their location, and the placing of the library on the top floor; where allowance will have to be made for the enormous weight of 300,000 books, the structural steel work has been unusually complicated in this building. A FEW years ago, it was generally thought that from 15 to 18 per, cent. of zinc oxide was the upper limit of a workable lead blast-furnace slag. With slags above this zinc-oxide content, the furnaces gave so much trouble because of hearth, wall, and crucible accretions that the campaign was very short. The time lost in cleaning out the frozen furnaces, for it was seldom possible to blow them out, and blowing in was so great that it was considered uneconomical to attempt the running of high-zinc slags, even if this were metallurgically possible. It is true that there are, references to one or two slags much higher in zinc than the foregoing,1 but the average smelterman regarded these, as freaks and not to be considered for regular furnace work. One or two plants, notably the plant of the United States Smelting Co, at Canyon City, Colo., ran charges, higher in zinc. At this plant, the zinc-oxide content of the charge was frequently 20 per cent. and higher but the slags from these furnace's seldom ran over 10 to 12 per. cent. zinc oxide. The furnaces were run with a large volume of air under a relatively low pressure, a low smelting column, and a very hot top; as a result, a large amount of zinc was volatilized. Even with the low smelting column and hot top, accretions caused much trouble and barring, down was a daily occurrence. At the time most of the theories on lead blast-furnace work were promulgated or worked out, it was necessary to run a furnace with a cold top in order to avoid an excessive loss due to fines and fume. At the same time, the smelting conditions had to be such that the lead and silver would be reduced and would enter the bullion. The slag had to be liquid but the charge must not give excessive accretions either in the hearth or on the walls of the furnace. This forced the operators to run the furnaces with a comparatively low blast, which, in turn, caused a small fuel consumption per unit of time with the accompanying result of a low working temperature.

INTRODUCTION SOONER or later in the development of any natural resource it becomes highly desirable to know the quantity of this resource in the country as a whole, as well as of the part that is being developed, for the general course and. conduct of the development work must be governed to some extent by the total supply available. An accurate estimate of the quantity of any natural resource is difficult to make; yet if one is diligent enough one can obtain a pretty accurate idea of the quantity of marketable timber, the acreage of tillable land, or the horsepower that may be developed from the streams, for these are things that may be measured. But any attempt to estimate the quantity of some mineral in the ground appears to enter the realm of imagination and it seems that the estimate can be nothing more than a blind guess. It may appear to be especially futile to attempt to determine the quantity of oil and gas that is available in the ground, for these minerals are so vagrant that even if the quantity now available should be known quite exactly, the quantity that will eventually be obtained may be much less, for certain losses in the extraction of both oil and gas are unavoidable, and just what these losses will be cannot be predicted. Though necessarily inaccurate, estimates of such mineral reserves are, however, of distinct value, for they summarize the existing knowledge of the deposits of the mineral and thus enable those who are interested in some industry that depends in one way or another on this mineral to formulate a rational commercial policy. IT is no great exaggeration to say that present grinding practice and economics are largely determined by lining design. A record of outstanding liner wear can be achieved with any liner surface pattern that will positively lock the outer layer or layers of grinding media. With no slippage, lining wear is bound to be slight. At the same time, popular practice calls for tumbling loads of about 50 pct of mill volume to obtain maximum grinding capacity. Innumerable parallel grinding investigations have verified that optimum speed for such a mill lies within 70 to 85 pct of theoretical critical speed. If the mill is speeded up to 100 pct of critical, little or no grinding can be accomplished. Earlier Work on Supercritical Grinding: First investigations concerning grinding at supercritical speeds seem to be very old. Remarkable work on the subject has been performed by White,&apos; and his experiments have been described and summarized by Richards.&apos; White&apos;s contributions seem to have passed unnoticed by Fahrenwald,2,3 whose extensive experiments have been well presented, yet apparently very little appreciated. Additional work on grinding at supercritical speed has been reported, e.g., by Lewenson and Tscherny,&apos; USSR; Anselm and Grunder,&apos;, Germany: and Rose and Evans." Great Britain. Subcritical and Supercritical Speeds: In the formula of the critical speed given in the textbooks of mineral dressing, no factor indicating the coefficient of friction is generally included. If this factor = 1.0, which is equivalent to grinding conditions in a mill provided with heavily ribbed lining, the formula of the critical speed holds as such and grinding is possible at subcritical speeds only. In a mill equipped with a smooth or relatively smooth lining, the numerical value of the friction factor in the denominator of the formula becomes <1.0, indicating that grinding at supercritical speeds should be possible in such mills. It has been recently shown by the author&apos; that a wide supercritical speed range will become available for grinding—and especially for fine grinding—if the basic conditions within the mill have been selected properly. Mathematical analysis of mill dynamics at supercritical speeds&apos; has indicated that the mill speed may be increased if: 1) total mass of grinding medium decreases, 2) mass of the individual grinding piece increases, and 3) the coefficient of friction between the outer layer of medium and the mill lining decreases. It is obvious that the mass of the individual grinding piece will be affected by its shape and by its specific gravity. The coefficient of friction decreases with: 1) increasing smoothness of liner surface, 2) increasing roundness of the grinding piece, 3) increasing fineness of material to be ground, 4) decreasing pulp density, and 5) decreasing hardness (abrasiveness) of the mineral to be ground. In a mill equipped with heavily ribbed lining, practically no size reduction will take place between the lining and the outer layer of tumbling medium, because slippage is prevented. In the overwhelming majority of today&apos;s mills the grinding accomplished is by virtue of cataracting and/or cascading media with some action within the tumbling charge. Sub-critical speeds only can be applied. In grate-type or peripheral discharge mills equipped with a smooth lining a tumbling load of any kind of common medium occupying about 50 pct of mill volume will behave in such a way that practically no slippage will take place. This has been verified in experiments run by the author in the laboratory and in pilot plant mills&apos; equipped with smooth lining. Again, the operation is limited to the subcritical range. In a mill with a smooth lining, grinding will be possible either at subcritical speeds or within a wide supercritical speed range as soon as the basic requirements for a desired speed are fulfilled. In a mill operated at supercritical speed, any point on the liner surface proceeds at a speed greater than that indicated by the formula of the critical speed, while any grinding piece situated in the outer layer of the medium against the lining proceeds in the same direction at a speed less than that indicated by the critical speed. This speed difference produces a very effective attrition grinding zone between the liner surface and the outer layer of the medium. The share of attrition grinding of the total grinding accomplished increases rapidly with increasing speed in the supercritical speed range. The smooth surface of the mill lining may be well illustrated by the surface of a bucking board. The outer ball layer may be similarly represented by the lower surface of a muller. If the bucking board, the material to be ground, and the muller all proceed in the same direction at the same speed, no grinding will result. This is the general situation in the mills of today. If, however, the muller is pulled with respect to the board, moving or stationary, grinding will be accomplished effectively. Although grinding in today&apos;s mills is primarily the result of cataracting and/or cascading media, the principal place of grinding at high supercritical speeds will be the attrition zone.&apos; In the mineral dressing laboratory of the State Institute for Technical Research. Abstract-Minas de San Luis, S.A. operates the old Tayoltita mine located in the Sierra Madre Occidental in Durango, Mexico. Yearly production is 55 000 kg (1.7 million troy ox) of silver and 1000 kg (31,000 troy ox) of gold from milling 165 000 t/y (181,900 stpy) obtained from fissure veins. A 4.4 km (2.75 miles) adit, to intersect the veins below existing workings, was completed in 1974. The adit and ancillary projects facilitated extensive mechanization of the mine, ramp development of it, integration of duplicate facilities and elimination of obsolete facilities. It provided a deep-level access for exploration and development of the veins, and resulted in a 25% increase in production with the same labor force. The cost of the in-house financed project was $3.4 million.

IT is 27 years since I last visited Broken Hill, New South Wales, one of the world&apos;s greatest lead-silver-zinc districts. Then, the flota¬tion of ores was in its infancy. The Minerals Separation process had its birth as a practicability in the Central Mill, which is still operating and yielding high recoveries. The average Australian knows that Broken Hill is an important mining center in a "corner" of New South Wales, but he does not know what a factor it is in the lead, silver, and zinc production of the world. Although data on the exact tonnage of recoverable coal silt are not known, the quantity produced in 1943 was estimated to be over five million tons for the anthracite region of Pennsylvania alone. Since that time the recovery of the No. 5 buckwheat size previously included in silt estimates has increased greatly thus reducing the total silt tonnage. As a compensating factor, however, the methods of recovering silt previously escaping into the rivers and streams have been markedly improved so that the net figure may not have changed materially. Comparable estimates for bituminous coal are lacking, but undoubtedly the silt represents a significant tonnage. With the trend toward increased wet cleaning of the smaller sizes of bituminous coal, it is to be expected that even greater quantities of silt will be available in the future. The raw silt from anthracite collieries usually contains a high mineral matter content, but technological developments in fine coal cleaning have been making rapid advances and it appears probable that more extensive use of these methods will be employed in the near future. Bituminous coal silt in many instances contains a similar high mineral matter content. As with anthracite silt, however, the cleaning of this material, where necessary, appears both technologically and economically feasible. With a view to upgrading the size and value of silt, considerable laboratory and pilot plant work has been conducted by a number of organizations on what is commonly known as pelletization. Actually the process is one of extrusion in which the moist silt is extruded from a die in the form of rods, which usually break into relatively short lengths—a few inches long—as they fall from the die. Fig I is a photograph of some extruded 3/8-in. diam pellets and of the anthracite silt from which they were produced This technique of producing larger sized material from fines is by no means new, having been used extensively by the industrial carbon and clay industries for years.&apos; The application of the process to coal silt appears, however, to be relatively new. The first major program of investigation dates back only to July 1945, when a group of engineers representing the Anthracite Institute, The Pennsylvania State College and the J. F. Pritchard and Co. conducted preliminary tests on the extrusion of anthracite silt at the Floridin Co. plant at Warren, Pa. Since that time these three organiza-tions—individually, together, and in cooperation with other interested groups— have actively pursued work on various phases of the problem. Much of the early history and details of the laboratory and pilot plant work by the Anthracite Institute, has been reported by Mulcey and Eckerd.2 It is the purpose of this paper to report additional information on the process, especially with respect to the factors influencing the quality and use properties of the product, and the current develop-

Surrounded by a thickly settled farming country, from which to draw native labor, within easy distance of anthracite and bituminous coal, with ores and limestone near at hand, and with the Susquehanna River as a never-failing water supply, Harrisburg has advantages for manufacturing which warrant the investment of the capital that has already been made, and has a future as a manufacturing city second only to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. THE PENNSYLVANIA STEEL COMPANY, L. S. BENT, SUPERINTENDENT. The works of this company, the largest in Harrisburg, lie between the Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia and Reading Railroads, on. the Pennsylvania Canal, and are essentially devoted to the manufacture of Bessemer steel rails. Capital stock, $2,000,000; invested in business, $5,000,000; wages per month, $80,000; employs 2000 men; capacity, 100,000 tons of rails per year, which is being increased to 130,000 tons. Weight-gain data obtained by nitriding low-carbon sheet steel in an amrnonia CNH,) atmosphere indicated that the process obeyed a parabolic rate law. The calculated actization energy for nitriding in the range 964" to 1268°F agreed reasonably well with published data. At 1358"F, rate data indicated that the activation energy decreased. Weight-gain data obtained by uszng mixtures of NH3 -Nz at 1268°F containzng jrom 10 to 100 zol pct NH3 also obeyed a parabolic rate law. The rate of &apos;nitriding increased with an increase in the NH3 content of the gas Mixture. It is well-known that steel heated in gas mixtures containing ammonia (NH3) takes up much larger quantities of nitrogen than steel heated in nitrogen, both gases having a total pressure of 1 atm;&apos; this phenomenon can presumably be attributed to the catalytic decomposition of NH3 on the steel surface to furnish nascent (monatomic) nitrogen. This process was studied bv Brunauer. Jefferson, Emmett, and Hend-ricks at furnace temperatures of 752" and 831°F2 using mixtures of NH3 in Hz. Englehardt and wagner3 reported that, at a furnace temperature of 914°F and under their experimental conditions, both nitriding and denitriding were controlled by the rate of gas-metal reactions at a steel surface rather than by the rate of diffusion of nitrogen in iron. The present study was undertaken to obtain information on the kinetics of nitriding low-carbon steel strip at higher temperatures so that practical rates for short-time strip-annealing treatments could be estimated. Variables studied included time: temperature, and NH, content in the annealing atmosphere. Mechanical and chemical characteristics of steel nitrided in this manner will not be considered in the present article. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK The samples used were from a commercial low-carbon steel, 0.0244 cm thick, in the cold-reduced condition. The chemical composition of this steel is given in Table I. Panels were cut to 5.1 by 17.8 cm, degreased in toluene, and weighed just before treatment. Four specimens were nitrided under each of the experimental conditions. A study was made of the nitriding rate of steel in a 100 vol pct ammonia atmosphere, 740 mm pressure, at five specific temperatures within the range 964" to 1358°F. The nitriding rates of steel in ammonia-nitrogen gas mixtures containing 10, 18, 26, 50, and 100 vol pct ammonia, 740 mm total pressure, at 1268°F were also determined. All atmospheres used were dried by successively passing them through drying towers packed with soda lime and with Linde Molecular sieve Type 4A. Quoted gas compositions refer to those entering the furnace. Specimens were held in the constant-temperature zone of a vertical annealing tube furnace for times of 14, 3, 5, 10, or 15 min. Gas flow rates were maintained at 3.8 cu ft per hr, which was nineteen volume changes per hour for the system used. The rate of flow was selected to provide a high level of free NH3 for cracking on the steel surface where the ammonia gas is most effectively used as a nitriding agent. The vertical annealing tube furnace consisted of a Hevi-Duty tube furnace with a 2 1/2-in.-ID mullite ceramic high-temperature tube. The constant-temperature zone (controlled within 10°F) was about 10 in. long. After each specimen was degreased, a hole was punched in one end, for attaching the specimen by hook to a chain so that it could be lowered into or raised from the high-temperature portion of the tube by means of a power-driven winch. A stainless-steel access port with O-ring seals was connected by suitable glass-to-metal seals to the cool upper portion of the furnace tube. After the weighed specimen was placed in the access port, the furnace tube was evacuated to approximately 10"3 torr, and then the system was flushed thoroughly with the atmosphere under study. When the gas flow rate and constant-temperature zone of the furnace were established, the specimen was lowered into the constant-temperature zone. The atmosphere flowed from the top to the bottom of the vertical furnace tube and was then vented. The oil production in Bahrein for the year 1937 was 7,762,264 bbl., a monthly average of 646,855 barrels. Sufficient potential production had been developed in the Second Pay (Main Pay) at Bahrein by the end of 1936 to supply the anticipated crude demand, and the drilling program was changed from straight development to partial exploration during 1937. Two nonproductive wells were drilled to test the Third Pay at a depth of about 2900 ft., or some 900 ft. below the top of Second Pay. As a result of this exploratory work, the normal drilling program was slowed down and only eight new wells were completed in the Second Pay during 1937, making a total of 45 producers from the Second Pay. The deep test was drilling at 5081 ft. at the end of the year. A 550-ft. section (termed Fourth Pay) of porous limestone interbedded with anhydrite was topped at about 4150 ft. Numerous drill-stem tests indicated that the limestone was very permeable and that it carried large volumes of natural gas under high pressure together with a small amount of high-gravity oil or condensate. Drill-stem tests also indicated that the bottom 50 ft. of the 550-ft. section carried an encouraging amount of heavier oil, gravity about 37" A.P.I., with characteristics similar to the oil produced from the Second Pay. A well was started somewhat down-structure from the deep test to better determine the oil-producing possibilities of the Fourth Pay. Some refinements in drilling technique were adopted during the year. All wells started to the Second Pay were drilled with rotary from the surface. The top 1500 ft. of porous limestone section, formerly drilled with cable tools, is now drilled with rotary without circulation, using water to wash the cuttings into cavities. The shale section from this point to the top of the oil horizons is drilled with natural mud circulation. The productive horizons are drilled with oil circulation under pressure control. A second satisfactory method of completing wells was developed when the two Third Pay test wells were plugged back and gun-perforated through cemented casing opposite the Second Pay, with good results.

Diamond-drill blasthole sloping has now been used for a long enough time to permit us to discuss fairly its problems from the ore-breaking angle and to attempt to peer into its future. To do this we have gathered information from many properties through questionnaires. The operators have indicated fairly well in their answers what they think of the method. The many variations of methods have by now been fairly well developed, and performance rates and. mining costs are well established at each property. All this can be laid down on paper with fair completeness. Now. knowing all this, what will the future of the method be? To attempt to look into the future of a mining method immediately brings to light many problems and variables. For instance: why were diamond drills used in the first place? What has the cost trend been? In what type of deposit has the method proved most advantageous? What will the future cost of diamonds be? What are the possible substitutes?
