EVERYONE engaged in the teaching of mining engineering will, I suppose, agree that the most difficult subject to teach is "Mining Methods." One primary difficulty is that the students taking the course have either had no previous experience in mining, or else they have had; either seeming to be somewhat of a drawback. The students who are unfamiliar with mines find it difficult to visualize underground conditions, as described and illustrated with sketches and maps, while those who have had underground experience seem to 'find it difficult to visualize anything much different from that which they have already seen. This reminds one of the remark about the Presbyterian doctrine of predestination, to the effect that "you are damned ,if you do; and damned if you don't."

More than a few discussions are taking place these days among management economists seeking a way out of the dilemma of lower productivity vs. higher labor costs. Most suggestions would be illegal under present antitrust laws. Otherwise interindustry cooperation could be used to divide up some of management's tasks. Or price structures might be tuned to the special machinery and skills of some plants. Both remedies would be under attack almost immediately. There is one other remedy that is getting lots of attention: some form of compromise between management and labor to phase out no longer needed work practices that unions insist shall be retained. Railroads are the national industry suffering the most from this disease, still known as "featherbedding," an epithet coined by the railroaders themselves.

IF all of the 14 million tons of kaolin produced in Georgia through 1949 had been mined from a single deposit 20 ft thick, it would represent a mined-out area of less than 1 sq mile. This measure of depletion is in such strong contrast with the large size of the area shown in Fig. 1, from which most of the output has come, that there has developed an optimistic outlook concerning future supplies of kaolin equal in grade to that already mined. Dozens of mines are widely but not evenly distributed within this area, which consists mostly of parts of Twiggs, Wilkinson, and Washington counties. There are scarcely half a dozen kaolin mines elsewhere in the state that have been appreciably productive, although the areas in which they occur may have good possibilities. Most of the efforts to find new deposits, therefore, will be confined to the area shown in Fig. 1, for it is here that the industry has established its facilities, and prospecting is encouraged by relatively numerous outcrops and opened deposits of kaolin.

DRILLING and blasting in anthracite open-pit mines is a continuous problem to contractors and explosive engineers because of the diverse conditions caused by the nature of the geological formations, the extensive mining of the portions of coal beds near the surface, and the proximity of many strip pits to populated areas. Pennsylvania anthracite occurs in four separate long and narrow fields totaling only 480 sq miles. The coal measures are rock strata and coal beds that are considerably folded and faulted. The crests of the anticlines are eroded extensively. The beds outcrop on the mountain sides and dip under the valleys. At first only the upper portions of the syn-clines could be stripped. Now stripping to increasingly greater depths is economically possible, as is indicated by the fact that the proportion of freshly mined anthracite produced by strip mining has increased from 3.7 pct of the total tonnage in 1930 to 29.6 pct in 1950. Much of the rock overlying the deeper beds now being stripped is so extensively broken that considerable difficulty is experienced in drilling satisfactory blast holes and in using explosives in such manner as to insure a uniformly broken material easily removed by the excavating machinery. Such breaking of rock strata has occurred because the bed now being stripped has been mined extensively in former years by underground methods, and tops of gangways and chambers have subsequently failed. Draglines are used to uncover coal where the overburden can be moved with little or no re-handling. These machines range in size from those having a 2 cu yd capacity bucket on a 60-ft boom to those handling a 25 cu yd bucket on a 200-ft boom. Draglines are also used to strip to the bottom of the coal basins if the depth and the distance between the crops are not too great. For this type of operation blast holes are drilled full depth to the bed. These holes are commonly 30 to 90 ft deep; however, in exceptional cases, holes may be as shallow as 12 ft or as deep as 130 ft. Drilling is normally done for blasts of 12,000 to 60,000 cu yd of overburden, 30,000 cu yd being considered an average blast if vibration is not the controlling factor. Where the stripping of wide basins or the exposure of a moderately pitching vein makes the use of draglines impractical, dipper front shovels equipped with 4 to 6 cu yd buckets load into trucks. Overburden is removed in benches of 25 to 30 ft with blast holes drilled 4 or 5 ft deeper than the planned floor of the bench. For shovels under 5 cu yd bucket capacity the volume blasted varies from 8000 to 12,000 cu yd, whereas a volume of 30,000 to 50,000 cu yd of overburden is frequently blasted at one time for the larger shovels where vibration is not an important factor. During the past decade the churn drill, generally the Model 42-T Bucyrus-Erie blast hole drill equipped for drilling 9-in. diam holes, has become the most common blast hole drilling machine. Electricity powers half the churn drills in use and is preferred on the large strippings where electric shovels are operated and the working area is concentrated. On these operations the cost of additional electricity for the drills is less than the cost of fuel to operate diesel units because of the existing large demand load of the excavating equipment. Moreover, electric motors start more easily in cold weather and generally are less expensive to maintain. Diesel driven units are employed where a higher degree of mobility is required. The average drilling speed is 8 ft per hr, although in softer rocks a rate of 15 ft per hr is attained. Where rock is hard and strata is badly broken, drill speeds may be less than 2 ft per hr. Low drilling production results under these circumstances when loose material falling from the upper portion of the drill holes causes drill stems to be jammed. Rock formations vary so greatly in the region that a 9-in. diam churn drill bit may become dull after drilling only 2 ft or may drill satisfactorily for 56 ft; however, an average of 35 ft is usual in sandstone of medium hardness. Dull bits are hoisted to flat bed trucks by the sand line of the drill and are usually sharpened in the contractor's bit shop adjacent to the job. Care is generally taken to cover the thread end of the bit with a cap. To facilitate handling of bits around the drill, a heavy thread protector having an eye top is becoming more popular than the flat-top rubber or metal cap furnished with new bits. The 9-in. diam blast holes for a 25 to 30 ft bench are normally on 18x18 ft to 20x20 ft spacings, depending on the character of the overburden, although in broken ground 15x18 ft centers may be used to obtain better breakage and a more even bottom for the bench. The rapid increase in cost of discovering new orebodies by churn drilling in the Tri-State district has led to some attempts to lessen the expense by using geophysical methods. Electrical prospecting was tried three or four years ago, but no successful results were recorded. In 1926, the Federal Mining and Smelting Co. engaged the North American Exploration Co., of Houston, Texas, to make some tests with the torsion balance. At first, it was thought that the most favorable conditions for discovery of ore deposits with the torsion balance would be in locations where the ore was known to occur at rather shallow depths, therefore the first trial was made at Ducnweg, east of Joplin, where some zinc ore had been developed at a depth of 130 ft. The gravity gradients at 61 stations on a tract of about seventeen acres indicated plainly one large zone of maximum gravity and a smaller narrow zone of minimum gravity. Fourteen churn-drill holes, half of which struck ore, show that all the ore found was located outside the zones of maximum and minimum gravity. In the zone of maximum gravity the limestone beds were closest to the surface, and the first chert beds encountered were at the greatest depth. The results (shown in Table 1) indicated that the gravity of the limestone was greater than the gravity of the fractured chert together with its orebodies, and probably also greater than the bouldery soil and clay on top of the limestone. A cross-section of the Duenweg lease is shown in Fig. 1.

During the past decade the writer has studied and mapped certain ore deposits and their structural associations in the states of Chihuahua, Durango, New Mexico and Arizona, and he believes that these deposits, with the exception of the manto-chimney, are representative of the principal types in the area of the states named. In this paper the deposits are described; then generalizations are drawn so far as seems appropriate. Hanover, New Mexico The Hanover, New Mexico, zinc deposits were briefly described by Lindgren and others,' Paige2 and recently in more detail by Schmitt. These, the kind ordinarily called contact metamorphic, border the southern end of an oval area of granodiorite intrusive ¾ mile wide and 2 miles long (Fig. I). The granodiorite has intruded, folded, and metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rocks, which range in age from pre-Cambrian to Upper Cretaceous. About 90 per cent of the ore has replaced coarse, recrystallized, pure, fossiliferous, lower Mississippian, nonmagnesian limestone (Hanover limestone) 110 ft. thick;4 about 75 per cent of it occurs in the upper 50 ft. of this horizon just below an 18-ft. lower Pennsylvanian shale bed, which lies on a locally inconspicuous unconformity representing upper Mississippian time. The orebodies show five shapes or attitudes, each dependent on a special structural situation: 1. Most of the ore occurs as podlike, thick lenslike or other "three-dimensional" shoots extending from top to bottom of the Hanover limestone and lying adjacent to the outer contact of a silicate zone largely of andradite, which follows the intrusive contact (Figs. 1 and 2).

A FORM of apparatus for volumetric determinations which shall possess the features requisite for the constant use of potassium permanganate, is a very desirable fixture in a well-appointed laboratory. Expedients to economize time and insure accuracy are generously employed for various other reagents, while the permanganate seems to have been consigned to the use of an ordinary burette, and a black bottle of the standardized solution. But the introduction of new, methods dependent on the permanganate, and the urgency of technical requirements where it has long been indispensable, require a revision of practice more scientific and convenient. The apparatus designed by the writer for the laboratory of the Thomas Iron Company at Hokendauqua, Pa., is so simply contrived and works with such entire satisfaction that a description of it may be of use. It may be prefaced that the characteristics of a suitable device offer some mechanical difficulties when combined in a continuous appliance. The burette, B (50 C.C. to 1/10 c.c.), shown in Fig. 1, consists of the graduated tube proper and an arm, E, fused to it below the 50 c.c. mark. At its top are rubber connections with the blast-aspirator, shown in the cut (Fig. 2) of the front view. By means of an extra stopcock, D, connection through E is established with the reservoir F. One of the chief difficulties with which the operator of a coal washing plant has been forced to contend is the handling of the very fine coal. First he has the problem of separating the fine coal from washery water. This is usually accomplished by the use of settling cones or Dorr thickeners: in either event the separated fine coal contains a high amount (40 to 80 pct) of water and, somewhat loosely, dependent upon the size of the coal particles present, may be known as sludge or slurry. His second problem is the satisfactory further dewatering of such separated sludge and/or slurry.

Self-diffusion coefficients of aluminum have been measured by the capillary reservoir technique in liquids of the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 system containirg equimolar portions of CaO and SiO2, in the temperature range 1400o to 1520oC. For the melt containing 6.0 mole pct Al2O3 the results can be expressed by the equation D = [(4.3 * 0.3) x 104] exp [(-85,000 * 17,500)/RT]cm~sec-'; for the melt containing 12.5 mole pct Al2O3, by the equation D = (5.4 i 0.2) exp [(-60,000 * 10,00O)/RT] cm2sec-: A concept of the constitution of these melts has been developed which proposes that the ratios O/(Si +Al) and Al2 O3/CaO determine the dominant species present. In recent years considerable work has been done on the system CaO-SiO2-A12O3 with a view to elucidating the structure of liquids of this system. Conductivity,' electromotive force, 3 density,4 and activity5 measurements have all contributed to an understanding of the problem, but as yet there is no entirely satisfactory theory that can account for all the observed experimental results. In principle, measurements of self-diffusion coefficients should give further information which is not obtainable in other ways. Self-diffusion coefficients for calcium, silicon,6 and oxygen7 have been measured. The present investigation extends the series of self-diffusion coefficient measurements to include aluminum and develops a concept of constitution for liquids of this system which is compatible with all the observed experimental results. EXPERIMENTAL The technique used in the measurement of the self-diffusion coefficient of aluminum was the capillary-reservoir method,8 A126 being incorporated in the melt contained in the capillary and inactive aluminum in the reservoir melt. This method was chosen because it minimizes convection currents' in the diffusion zone. It has the further advantage that the boundary conditions are such that a slight modifica- tion of Anderson and saddington's8 solution of Fick's Law yields an equation which requires measurements only of the length and the initial and final average specific activities of the solidified melt within the capillary. where t is the diffusion time, Co is the average specific activity of the melt contained in the capillary at t = O, C is the average specific activity of the melt contained in the capillary at t = t, 1is the length of the capillary, and D is the self-diffusion coefficient. The equation is of somewhat different form than those previously applied to high temperature diffusion studies because the specific activity of the melt in the reservoir was negligible both before and after diffusion. The diffusion apparatus is shown schematically in Fig. 1. It consisted of a silicon carbide resistance furnace containing the inactive melt in a graphite crucible, internal dimensions 7/8 by 4 in., enclosed in a 1 1/4- by 1 1/2- by 30-in. McDanel tube. A 3/8-in. McDanel thermocouple sheath to which graphite radiation shields and a graphite protection tube were affixed, was used to hold the capillaries. By moving this sheath through a rubber seal at the top of the McDanel tube the capillaries could be lowered into or raised out of the melt. Temperature was measured with a Pt-Pt 13 pct Rh thermocouple which was calibrated periodically against a standard couple. The furnace temperature was controlled to ± 5°C through the thermocouple immersed in the melt. Temperature variation over the depth of the melt was less than ± 3°C. The inactive melts were prepared from pure native quartz, assaying better than 99.9 pct SiO2, A.R. grade A12O3 and A.R. grade CaCO,. DURING the early development of blasting with liquid oxygen explosives the trend of experimentation was towards increasing the effectiveness of the explosive. Its characteristic of becoming inert after evaporation of the oxygen content made a strong appeal from the standpoint of safety, especially with missed holes. It later became apparent, however, with practical use of this explosive, that LOX lacked certain other safety characteristics. As its effectiveness was increased, it became more subject to detonation by impact. The object of this paper is to show the steps taken by one operating company to achieve greater safety in the large-scale handling of liquid oxygen explosives.

IT has been reported frequently that the hardness and strength vary over the cross section of cold-worked, particularly cold-drawn, material. Brass rod and wire usually have been found to possess a maximum strength and hardness near the surface.1,2 According to Sachs,' the center fiber has about the same strength as a wire stretched by the same amount in a tensile-test machine, the strength increasing toward the surface (Fig. I). These differences are particularly large for wire given a small reduction on drawing through a die with a wide opening. However, with increasing reduction and hardness, a tendency to form a thin soft surface skin becomes apparent. On the contrary, copper wire has usually been found to possess a soft surface skin3-5 and it has been reported by Harris3 that during the cold-drawing of hot-rolled wire the surface layer becomes increasingly softer than the core, while the layer of maximum strength moves toward the core, it being found near the surface at first. IT has been reported frequently that the hardness and strength vary over the cross section of cold-worked, particularly cold-drawn, material. Brass rod and wire usually have been found to possess a maximum strength and hardness near the surface.1,2 According to Sachs,' the center fiber has about the same strength as a wire stretched by the same amount in a tensile-test machine, the strength increasing toward the surface (Fig. I). These differences are particularly large for wire given a small reduction on drawing through a die with a wide opening. However, with increasing reduction and hardness, a tendency to form a thin soft surface skin becomes apparent. On the contrary, copper wire has usually been found to possess a soft surface skin3-5 and it has been reported by Harris3 that during the cold-drawing of hot-rolled wire the surface layer becomes increasingly softer than the core, while the layer of maximum strength moves toward the core, it being found near the surface at first. By means of a continuum-mechanics approach, the following equation for calculuting the pressure for axisymmetric cold forging has been derived: where P is the extrusion pressure; K and n are the strength coefficient and the strain-hardening exponent of the steel, respectively; a and b are strain factors, primarily dependent on the die design; and R is the extrusion ratio. Data from compression and backward-extrusion tests performed at a crosshead speed of 0.5 in. per min on a nonwork-hardening material pure lead) and on a work-hardening material (1018 steel) indicate that the predicted extrusion pressures obtained from the derived equation agree very closely with the actual extrusion pressures. Therefore, the equation can be used to predict backward-extrusion pressures from standard mechanical-test data. The decision to cold-forge a part is based on several considerations, most of them related to economics. However, the production feasibility is usually determined by the pressure needed to extrude the part and the availability of tooling that can repeatedly sustain this pressure for over several hundred thousand cycles. A major contribution to the cold forging of steel would result from the development of steels that could be forged at reduced pressures and from the development of techniques that permit the accurate prediction of the pressure necessary to cold-forge the part. The ability to predict extrusion pressures is necessary to properly design the tooling required for the cold-forging process. Attempts to theoretically predict the cold-forging pressure, especially for work-hardening materials, have been unsuccessful in previous investigations of the cold-forging process.1-3 Many empirical relations have, therefore, been proposed relating the extrusion pressure to the chemical composition,' the extrusion ratio,2 the tensile strength,273 and hard- ness, 2 and the yield strength3 of the material being extruded. However, these empirical relations are valid only for the specific conditions used in their development, and, in some cases, the empirical relations had a scatter band greater than * 10 pct. A study of the extrusion process was undertaken with the objective of developing predictor equations for extrusion pressure by using a continuum-mechanics approach to the problem of metal flow. The derivation of such an equation is summarized in this paper, and data are presented that confirm the validity of the derived equation. DERIVATION OF THE EXTRUSION EQUATION If the extrusion of a material through a die is considered in terms of a work balance, it has been shown that it is possible to derive an equation relating the work necessary to move the material through the die to the deformation work undergone by the material. The work done, W, in moving the material is given by where F is the extrusion force, I, is the distance the material was moved, A, is the original cross-sectional area of the material, P is the extrusion pressure acting on A,, Ap is the cross-sectional area of the extrusion punch, and Pp is the punch pressure acting on Ap. The deformation work, WD, is given by where V is the volume of metal deformed, ay is the flow stress of the metal, and E is the total strain undergone in the extrusion. ALTHOUGH Cerro de Pasco was well known since the early sixteen hundreds as one of the major silver districts of the Andes, its development on a modern scale did not occur until the first decade of the present century when a syndicate organized by James B. Haggin initiated the enterprise that eventually grew into the complex and widespread operations of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation. Options on a few claims in Cerro de Pasco that had been brought to New York in 1900 came to the attention of A. W. McCune, a mining man from Salt Lake City, who took them to Haggin and soon succeeded in interesting that creative mining financier in the possibilities of the district. James MacFarlane, an engineer well known to both Haggin and McCune, was sent to Peru early in 1901 to make the initial examinations which promptly led to acquisition of a substantial group of claims in the heart of the mineralized area. A syndicate to which Haggin turned over his rights was organized on Feb. 26, 1902 to provide the necessary funds. The original members were J. B. Haggin, who retained a 34 per cent interest, Edward H. Clark (for Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, the widow of Haggin's old associate, George Hearst), H. McK. Twombly, H. C. Frick, D. O. Mills, and J.P. Morgan.
