In the year 1581, the counselors of King Philip of Spain suggested to that monarch that a canal across the Isthmus of Darien would open the west coast of the South American continent to Spanish miners and explorers, enlarging and expanding the flow of precious metals then just beginning to trickle across the path cut by Spanish Conquistadors, from old Panama to Puerto Bello on the east coast. The King sent out a party of surveyors and explorers under the command of a young engineer, Savadaerro, who returned after two years, reporting upon a location for a canal which was virtually adopted by the French engineers employed by De Lesseps, who in 1877 commenced the work of constructing the Panama Canal-296 years after Sava- daerro's first survey was begun. The suggestion for an Isthmian canal, made to the king at a time when Spain was a proud, virile nation and when that country was contending with England in the fields of discovery and conquest, represents a measure of vision that has never failed to intrigue the imagination. That the young Spanish engineer recommended an undertaking so gigantic in conception that it took three and one-third centuries for its completion from the time it was first visioned matters little. A CONSIDERABLE amount of information is available on the equilibrium distribution of manganese between slag and metal under oxidizing conditions. These data have increased our knowledge of the manganese reactions in the open hearth, ladle, and ingot mold. In contrast, there is a paucity of data on the slag-metal distribution of manganese under reducing conditions. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the equilibrium distribution of manganese between blast-furnace type slags and iron saturated with carbon. Experimental Method Furnace: The induction furnace used for the experiments is shown in Fig. 1. A 1 in. pipe, attached to the transite cover, was fitted with a window through which the charge could be observed. Material could be introduced into the furnace through a tee and plug without removing the cover. A graph-it cylinder (3 in. ID and 10'/2 in. long), centered within the induction coil, was used as a heating element. During a test, a zircon plug kept the top of the furnace from becoming too hot from heat radiation. At the bottom, a graphite block on the vertical center line of the furnace and extending 1 1/2 in. into the coil, was used as a support for the graphite crucibles containing the melt. The graphite crucibles, machined from regular carbon electrode stock, had a 2% in. OD with 3/16 in. walls and were 5% in. long. The fumes present in the furnace during the early part of a run made optical readings uncertain. A noble metal thermocouple was, therefore, adopted to measure the temperatures. The arrangement used, shown in Fig. 1, allowed the silmanite protection tube to be replaced with a minimum effort. The thermocouple was calibrated against a standard Pt-Pt-Rh thermocouple in a fused quartz protection tube. The latter was inserted in the molten iron by removing the glass window on the cover. The lower couple was found to be very sensitive to temperature changes. To insure accurate temperature readings, the graphite crucibles were made to fit tightly against the silmanite protection tube. Further, to avoid contamination of the thermocouple by carbon, the silmanite tube was changed and the calibration procedure was repeated at frequent intervals. By using this temperature measuring technique, the furnace was easily held within *1O°C of the desired temperature. The Hurghada field is still the major producing field in Egypt. There was almost no activity in the Abu Durba field during 1936 and no new evidence is available. THE method of making coke that has been adopted at the Kaiping and other collieries in northern China resembles, to some extent, the familiar bee-hive oven process of the United States, except that a kiln with permanent sides is used instead of a closed oven, and the products of combustion are drawn off at the bottom, In building coke-kilns in China, two circular holes, 8 ft. 6 in. in diameter at the bottom and 13 ft. in diameter at the top, are excavated in the ground, both being .connected at the bottom by a flue as shown in Fig. 1. The sides and bottom of the kiln are lined with fire-bricks, and covered with a layer of fire-clay, and a rectangular opening, 6 in. by 8 in., connects the bottom of each kiln with the main flue. Around the edge of the hole, and overlapping the lining, is a wall of fire-brick extending .2 ft. 6 in. above the level of the ground. An open space 5 ft. wide is left in this wall, through which the coal is carried into the kiln and the resultant coke removed. This space, of course, is bricked up during the time that the coking operation is being carried on. The wall is pierced with nine flue-openings uniformly placed around the circumference, each intervening space in the wall being strengthened with a brick buttress, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The floor of the kiln, as well as the main flue, is lined with fire-brick. Before charging the coal, it is first placed in shallow bamboo sieves, 2 ft. in diameter, and immersed in a trough 10 ft. long, and 3 ft. wide, fed with pit-water; in which it is washed by hand. Fig. 3 shows the manner in which the washing is done. From 25 tons of good " dust" coal, 22.5 tons of washed coal are obtained. Square bars of cold-dvawn copper, mild steel and a 2024 aluminum alloy were forced through an adjulstable gap between two hardened steel rollers by pulling or pushing. The rollers were either free to rotate or were locked in position so that conditions comparable with drawing, rolling, ad containerless extrusion could be created at will. Push or pull forces as well as roll separatirg forces were measured. Forming efficiency and coefficients of friction were determined. For- slow-rate deformation the values ot µ wrere between 0.09 and 0.14. Possibilities for further investigation are indicated. THIS work was undertaken with the aim of a) determining the principal parameters of cold drawing under simplified conditions directly, without recourse to speculative assumptions and b) comparing drawing with rolling and extrusion from the viewpoint of forces involved and deformation efficiency. Data of type a) relating forces in axially-symmet-rical drawing to die geometry. drafting schedules, material properties and lubrication conditions are abundant. Their intrinsic value is. however. limited as long as the radial die forces are unknown. On the other hand. the difficulties associated with measurement of these forces are serious as witnessed by the extreme paucity of such information."" Comparative investigations of type b) were also remarkably few and they all employed ring-shaped dies through which round bars were either drawn or pushed.2-4 Only in one case were the applied and the die splitting forces measured simultaneously.2 In order to simplify the problem, deformation under approximately biaxial conditions was adopted in the present work;. This enables both the drawing (rolling, extruding) efforts and the separating forces to be measured with reasonable ease by conventional methods. Since drawing, extrusion, and rolling can be carried out under virtually identical conditions only in a roller die. an adjustable tool of this type was constructed. The circular die profile involved a difficulty with interpreting the drawing and extrusion data. This was obviated by arbitrarily defining the angle between a contact chord and the drawing plane as the -.equivalent" die semiangle. The simplification was considered permissible since the effect of die angle was not specifically investigated. An additional conlplication was caused by the square cross section of the processed bars. This shape was selected as a compromise between the desire to have as massive as possible specimens and the capacity of the roller die. The metal was only partially restrained from spreading laterally. the flow conditions being therefore intermediate between plane stress and plane strain. On the Huber-Mises yield criterion the constrained and uni-axial yield strengths differ by up to 16 pct but the actual error due to the ignorance of the constraint factor was presumably much smaller than the maximum. In spite of these reservations it was felt that the method employed and results obtained have some merit. With certain further refinements to be indicated later, this technique can yield data perhaps more useful for checking metal forming theories than other, mostly indirect, methods. EXPERIMENTAL Materials—The metals used together with their principal mechanical properties are listed in Table I.

The total pipe-line runs of petroleum in Indiana during 1945 were 4,114,000 bbl., a decline of nearly 17 per cent below the estimated 4,950,000 bbl. produced in 1944. Drilling activity during the year was centered in Posey and Gibson Counties, where seven new pools were discovered in the state. Four of the pools are in Posey County-Crunk, Farmersville, Jeffries and St. Wendells East-and the other three are in Gibson County-Johnson West, Lysle and Mt. Carmel East.

IT would be of great importance to our understanding of the phenomena of fracture in metals if a unique relationship could be established between stress and some easily measurable parameter of deformation up to the fracture. It is known that no such relationshir, has been found when the parameter was the mechanically measured strain,' the major part of which is plastic. To this end, annealed stress free*' specimens of 61s aluminum alloy were ** Freedom of stress in this particular case means absence of those stresses which can be checked by the technique employed. tested at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature (—195OC), by first maintaining the same temperature from the beginning until the end of the test, and then with crossovers from one temperature to the other. Three major factors had to be taken into consideration in designing the specimens and testing equipment. The test setup must allow X-ray pictures to be taken while the specimen is under load (for as much as 2 hr at a given load). Provision must be made for maintaining the test specimen at the temperature of liquid nitrogen as well as at room temperature. In addition, the specimen must be able to rotate to allow the X,ray beam to take in as large a sample of grains as possible, to maintain centering, and to correct for effects of large grains. The final design of the specimen and equipment is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The specimen and grips are hollow, enabling liquid nitrogen to be poured in through a funnel-container arrangement while the specimen is rotating. The diameter of the specimens at the 2 in. gage section is 5/16 in. with a 3/16 in. diameter hole through the center. A small pilot valve in the lower grip allows a very small stream of liquid nitrogen to escape, thus assuring circulation of the liquid at all times. A low temperature silicone grease-tissue paper packing is used to seal all joints. The specimen is held in the grips by a pin. Spherical socket joints at top and bottom are used to allow for proper alignment. The grips are connected to the thrust bearings by means of plastic couplings to decrease the heat flow. Rotation is accomplished by means of a motor which drives a plastic gear (integral with the lower coupling) through a semiuniversal joint to allow for deforma- tion of the specimen. The torque applied to the specimen is very small. The maximum stress caused by this torque at the highest loads reached was found to be less than 200 psi, The whole unit was mounted in a 10,000 Ib testing machine. An insulation cage was placed around the specimen to cut down air circulation, and consequent frosting of the specimen, and also to reduce radiation and convection heat losses. A narrow window, covered on both sides with a thin plastic materiai allows the X-ray beam to reach the specimen. Beds or lenses of potash and magnesium salts are found in a thick salt section (Salado) overlain by Rustler Red Beds in several members of which water is present and from one of which the rehery process water used by International is obtained. Most of the holes drilled are less than 1000 ft. deep, but some wildcat holes have exceeded 3- ft. cable or rotary tools are used to drill down to the salt. when samples of water are desired the cable rig is used, but when this is not necessary, and where caving material is present, the rotary rig has an advantage. The rotary rig has a further advantage in that only one machine is required to drill and core the entire hole, whereas the cable rig must be moved off to make way for the core drill. Casing is placed in the upper section of the hole as required to shut off water, and a 5 3/16 in. string is set in the top of the salt before coring starts. With the rotary rig drilling is often carried to the salt with no casing, as drilling mud seals off caving ground and water-bearing strata, and a string of 4-in. line pipe or 4-in. flush-joint casing is landed on top of salt. Several types of gasoline-powered core rigs have been used in the field and all recover a 2 1/2-in. core. More recently the Sullivan Model 37 rotary rig has been tried, and a Sullivan Model N has been adapted to use a rotary bit in the upper section. Core is recovered in 20 ft. sections with a double-tube core barrel, and the bit used is a bottom-discharge type set with diamonds. The drilling fluid must be a saturated brine to prevent solution and etching of the minerals present. Blowouts are apt to Occur from nitrogen gas trapped under the several polybalite beds, and some have been strong enough to blow the tools out of the hole. Core recovery is practically loo per cent. All holes are plugged after drilling, with cement through the salt section and opposite each water horizon* and mud through the remainder of the hole. Cores are carefully logged and preserved, and in sections containing potash and magnesium minerals they are quartered and analyzed. The correlation of Ore beds between drill holes is briefly described. Introduction Beds Or lenses of potash and magnesium salts are found at varying depths in a thick deposit of salt (Salado formation) in what is known as the Permian Basin, in southeast New Mexico and West Texas. The Salado formation is Composed chiefly of common salt (halite) with numerous beds of anhydrite, polyhalite, and the soluble potash minerals carnallite, sylvite and langbeinite. Many other minerals are present in small amounts but their Presence has no bearing On the coring technique. Before starting to core the salt section it is necessary to penetrate 300 to 600 ft. of unconformably overlying Permian sediments (Rustler formation) which are composed of red and gray clay, sand, anhydrite, dolomitic limestone and occasional lenses of salt. DURING the Dark Ages, when metallurgy was practiced by the alchemists, any unusual or disturbing variation in metallurgical operations was ascribed to the, presence, in the metals or ores, of an evil spirit, and it was necessary to exorcise and drive it out "by suitable incantations. In this day of science and of engineering, things still incomprehensibly go wrong in the metallurgist's work shop. The metallurgist is even now not unwilling to lay the blame for many such experiences at the door of something which intellectually- much resembles an evil spirit, "gas in the metal." The presence of gases in his metal, he knows, occasions him many very definite troubles which he can clearly distinguish and diagnose-why may it not be also responsible for those which he cannot so well understand?

. RECENTLY two papers on the structure of eutectics were read before the British Institute of Metals, one by F. L. Brady1 and the other by A. Portevin.2 In the preparation of photomicrographs of laboratory specimens as illustrations for student work, and in connection with various researches; the writer has been working along the same line for some, time and, therefore, was much interested in the results given, especially those of Portevin. He has correlated the information on the subject and has outlined a broad scientific basis for future work along this line. It is largely with the idea-of adding something by way of illustration to the work already done that this paper is written. The eutectic is generally understood to mean the alloy having the lowest melting point of any alloy of the system, and in which the melt becomes supersaturated with reference to the two or more phases which, separate out simultaneously (or alternately). From the surface pattern, the eutectic means; a structure with no primary crystals. It is not always easy to get the exact eutectic composition in making any alloy; in fact, a slight range in composition may be expected and some of the coarser particles may be richer in either of the composing metals. Even when chemical analysis shows the right composition, differences in density of the pure metals may cause segregation, or. supercooling resulting from different crystallizing properties may give a surface pattern the appearance of being on one side of the eutectic point. However, the alloys on either side of the eutectic composition, showing primary crystals of one of the phases and the effect of the pro-eutectic form on the surface pattern of the eutectic make a very interesting study, which is slightly touched upon in this paper. The phases, or microconstituents, of a eutectic may be pure metals (Pb-Sb, Tl-Au), solid solutions (Cd-Zn), a pure metal and a solid solution; (Ag-Sn), or a pure metal or solid solution with an intermetallic compound (Sb-Mg, Sb-Cu, As-Cu, Bi-Te, etc.).

This paper discusses the impact of taxes at the state and federal level on typical on-shore oil and gas exploration economics in the USA. Taxes considered are the windfall profits excise tax, state production (or severance) taxes, state income tax, and federal income tax. Also considered will be market prices for oil and gas in the USA. The effect of government take as a percent of revenue, on rate of return, discounted Payout, and discounted cumulative cash flow is shown on the attached tables. The conclusion drawn is that tax laws, while rarely the most important factor to be considered when drilling a well, can have significant impact on the profitability of oil and gas ventures, and should be considered when determining where to drill. Hypothetical exploration wells were analyzed for the impact of tax laws on project profitability. The results of this study show that when factors other than taxes are postulated to be the same (such as producing rate, capital, operating costs, and prices), cash flow can vary by as much as 68% due to the differences in the tax laws. Other significant findings for the cases studied include: (a) that discounted payout varied by as much as 1.8 years, (b) that rate of return differed by up to 67% and (c) the total tax rate as a percentage of revenue had a maximum variance of 33%.

THAT a distressing explosion of some magnitude did not take place in the Berry No. 3 mine of the Ford Collieries Co. recently was solely because no source of ignition was present when the stage was set for such an occurrence. The mines of this company, which are in West Deer Township, Allegheny' County, Pa., have been operating in the double or thick Freeport seam since 1.909. During this entire period they have been classed as gaseous by the Pennsylvania Department of Mines, and some gas has been encountered from time to time almost entirely however in development work in the vicinity of clay veins or wants-and never to my knowledge on gobs or in rib work.

THE main orebody in the Hecla mine, Burke, Ida- ho, occurs along a nearly vertical shear zone in the Burke quartzite, with a substantial gouge and lamprophyre dike occurring in an irregular manner throughout the lode. The veins range from 3 to 40 ft. wide and dip from 70 deg. to 90 deg. There is 110 definite line of demarcation between the lode and the wall rock. Stringers of ore are often found in the wall rock for irregular distances. Horizontal but irregular quartz stringers are also found running into the walls and positions of the wall have a tendency to break to the quartz stringers and the accompanying gouge, which causes indefinite, uneven and extremely heavy side and top pressures.

In the pressurc die-casting of zinc alloys it is customary to force the molten alloy under high pressure into a permanent steel die by means of a plunger moving in a bushing that has a clearance on the diameter of the order of 0.002 in. Successful operation of the plunger type of machine requires the presence in the zinc alloy of certain percentages of aluminum. Without these aluminum additions, the normal reaction of molten zinc on ferrous materials causes sticking of the plunger arid a complcte shutdown of the equipment. All of the zinc alloys used for pressure dir-rnsting today contain approximately 4 per cent of aLUminum, which is more than suffieient to make plunger opcration feasible. The clearancc bet,ween the plunger and its bushing is an important matter. As the space bccomes larger, there is a loss in effective metal pressure. Ordinary gray cast iron served fairly well and is still uscd in some machines. However, the rate at which the plunger c1earance. increases with this material is considered by many to be far too great. There is, therefore, a serious interest in finding new matcrinls more: capable of retaining the desired clearance during long periods of use. Today marly die casters are using special materials for plungers and bushings selected by the somewhat expensive and time-consuming test of actual experience. An analysis of the problem reveals two possible end points of plunger. operation: (1) the building up of zinc-alloy plunger-material reaction products in sufficient bulk to cause sticking and (2) rapid solution, wear or erosion, all of which will increase the clearance to an undesirable extent. If neither of these takes place, the pluriger will operatc for a long time, of course.. The authors have developed a laboratory apparat,us in which the action of a plunger moving in a bushing immersed in molten zinc alloy could be simulated closely. Such a machine made possible a more rapid and less expensive survey of the available construction materials and an analysis of the specific alloying reactions taking place in the clearance area.

DRILLING and blasting in anthracite open-pit mines is a continuous problem to contractors and explosive engineers because of the diverse conditions caused by the nature of the geological formations, the extensive mining of the portions of coal beds near the surface, and the proximity of many strip pits to populated areas. Pennsylvania anthracite occurs in four separate long and narrow fields totaling only 480 sq miles. The coal measures are rock strata and coal beds that are considerably folded and faulted. The crests of the anticlines are eroded extensively. The beds outcrop on the mountain sides and dip under the valleys. At first only the upper portions of the synclines could be stripped. Now stripping to increasingly greater depths is economically possible, as is indicated by the fact that the proportion of freshly mined anthracite produced by strip mining has increased from 3.7 pct of the total tonnage in 1930 to 29.6 pct in 1950. Much of the rock overlying the deeper beds now being stripped is so extensively broken that considerable difficulty is experienced in drilling satisfactory blast holes and in using explosives in such manner as to insure a uniformly broken material easily removed by the excavating machinery. Such breaking of rock strata has occurred because the bed now being stripped has been mined extensively in former years by underground methods, and tops of gangways and chambers have subsequently failed. Draglines are used to uncover coal where the overburden can be moved with little or no rehandling. These machines range in size from those having a 2 cu yd capacity bucket on a 60-ft boom to those handling a 25 cu yd bucket on a 200-ft boom. Draglines are also used to strip to the bottom of the coal basins if the depth and the distance between the crops are not too great. For this type of operation blast holes are drilled full depth to the bed. These holes are commonly 30 to 90 ft deep; however, in exceptional cases, holes may be as shallow as 12 ft or as deep as 130 ft. Drilling is normally done for blasts of 12,000 to 60,000 cu yd of overburden, 30,000 cu yd being considered an average blast if vibration is not the controlling factor. Where the stripping of wide basins or the exposure of a moderately pitching vein makes the use of draglines impractical, dipper front shovels equipped with 4 to 6 1/2 cu yd buckets load into trucks. Overburden is removed in benches of 25 to 30 ft with blast holes drilled 4 or 5 ft deeper than the planned floor of the bench. For shovels under 5 cu yd bucket capacity the volume blasted varies from 8000 to 12,000 cu yd, whereas a volume of 30,000 to 50,000 cu yd of overburden is frequently blasted at one time for the larger shovels where vibration is not an important factor. During the past decade the churn drill, generally the Model 42-T Bucyrus-Erie blast hole drill equipped for drilling 9-in. diam holes, has become the most common blast hole drilling machine. Electricity powers half the churn drills in use and is preferred on the large strippings where electric shovels are operated and the working area is concentrated. On these operations the cost of additional electricity for the drills is less than the cost of fuel to operate diesel units because of the existing large demand load of the excavating equipment. Moreover, electric motors start more easily in cold weather and generally are less expensive to maintain. Diesel driven units are employed where a higher degree of mobility. is required. The average drilling speed is 8 ft per hr, although in softer rocks a rate of 15 ft per hr is attained. Where rock is hard and strata is badly broken, drill speeds may ' be less than 2 ft per hr. Low drilling production results under these circumstances when loose material falling from the upper portion of the drill holes causes drill stems to be jammed. Rock formations vary so greatly in the region that a 9-in. diam churn drill bit may become dull after drilling only 2 ft or may drill satisfactorily for 56 ft; however, an average of 35 ft is usual in sandstone of medium hardness. Dull bits are hoisted to flat bed trucks by the sand line of the drill and are usually sharpened in the contractor's bit shop adjacent to the job. Care is generally taken to cover the thread end of the bit with a cap. To facilitate handling of bits around the drill, a heavy thread protector having an eye top is becoming more popular than the flat-top rubber or metal cap furnished with new bits. The 9-in. diam blast holes for a 25 to 30 ft bench are normally on 18x18 ft to 20x20 ft spacings, depending on the character of the overburden, although in broken ground 15x18 ft centers may be used to obtain better breakage and a more even bottom for the bench. Formerly great divergence of opinion existed in regard to the influence of copper in steel, as affecting its various physical properties. More recently the investigations of Stead,l Breuil,2 Wigham,3 Burgess and Aston: Ball and Wingham,5 Miiller; Dillner,7 and others have shown fairly good agreement in the major points. Copper steel has been shown by these investigators to possess special properties which make it valuable for certain uses. The general range of composition of the useful alloys of copper and iron, and of copper, iron, and carbon, has been quite definitely established, for the former by Burgess and Aston,8 and for the latter by Breuil9 and Stead.10 Stead11 has removed one difficulty in reconciling certain of the earlier data by calling particular attention to the influence 'of carbon in copper steels. Another point which caused confusion in the earlier investigations, particularly in regard to " red-shortness," was the presence of sulphur. Failure to note the presence of sulphur often led to attributing " red-shortness" to the presence of small amounts of copper. Turner12 has called attention to the fact that where copper exists in an iron ore it often occurs as the sulphide, so that the presence of copper in steel made from such ores might also, necessarily, mean the presence of sulphur. It is evident that the effect in this case might be quite different than where pure copper was added.

FOR many years gravitational classification has been employed as a basic tool in beneficiation of minerals and coal. While improvements have been made to increase efficiency and fields of application, the basic flow pattern has remained relatively unchanged in most gravitational classifiers. Feed slurry is introduced into a settling pool wherein the coarser solids settle against either an upward or horizontal fluid current, or a combination of both, and are withdrawn in a concentrated underflow stream. The finer solids below the classification point possess too low a settling velocity and thus are primarily swept out through a weir overflow by the bulk of the fluid. Because of its simplicity, efficiency, and low power and maintenance costs, gravitational classification finds a wide acceptance for separations in the range of 20 to 325 mesh. Two factors resulting from the basic flow pattern employed in gravitational classification present difficult problems for certain installations. If classification at 60 to 200 mesh of separation is desired, capacity in terms of gallons of overflow per minute per square foot of settling pool area must be low to allow required solids to settle to the underflow. If a thousand or more gal per min of feed slurry must be handled, either a very large classifier or a number of smaller units must be employed, taking up floor space and head room. Examples of this are the large classifiers, wetting tanks, or settling tanks used in the coal industry for recovery of process water from fine solids. Units as large as 50 or 60 ft in diam and 60 ft high, requiring substantial amounts of steel, are not uncommon. A second factor is the lack of self-regulation in gravitational classification. As overflow rate increases, mesh of separation increases correspond-ingly. This normally heightens difficulties of bene-ficiation. If a fine mesh of separation is required at varying feed rates, the problem is more than doubled in complexity. One of the primary advantages of gravitational classification is low power requirement. Gravity feeds or very low pressure heads are employed. However, fluid energy is still present in the inlet stream and provision must be made to dissipate it properly to obtain uniform upward or horizontal currents. Rather than waste this energy, it would be desirable to utilize it to secure a greater degree of self-regulation and simultaneously increase classification capacity per square foot of area. A free vortex could be realized by a tangential entry of feed, resulting in generation of centrifugal force to complement force of gravity in its action. With greater force it should be possible to gain finer separation at any overflow rate per square foot of settling pool area as compared with conventional gravitational classification. Furthermore, as feed rate increases, centrifugal force will also increase and at least partially offset faster currents sweeping solid particles to the overflow. A more stable classification point should result. The liquid-solid cyclone is the most common application of a free vortex in the beneficiation field.' Many previous papers have emphasized uniformity of flow pattern within the cyclone which is largely responsible for the sharp classification that can be obtained.'-4 If a free vortex can be maintained in a non-pressurized vessel with a free surface it may be possible to realize a third advantage of sharper classification. This open-top cyclone would then achieve a minimum energy loss comparable to that with conventional classifiers, and a mesh of separation coarser than 150 mesh, extending the range of application of the free vortex. This is not presently possible with ordinary cyclones. To test the applicability of the free vortex to gravitational classification, a 30-in. diameter open-top cyclone was constructed at Northwestern University. The cylindrical section was 30 in. high and the conical section included an angle of 60".
