The Bureau of Mines developed a mathematical model for analysis of the impact of scrubber bed length, porosity, and gas flow rate on the absorption of C02 in a breathing apparatus. The model accounts for the decrease in available absorbent through chemical conversion. The pre-dicted efflux of C02 from a canister containing LiOR compared favorably with measured values reported elsewhere. It was determined from a com-putational study that the time for breakthrough of C02 at a prescribed level is nearly directly proportional to bed length and inversely pro-portional to gas flow and porosity.

METALLURGISTS and mill operators appreciate, in a general way, .the economic or commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product but few have correlated in detail fluctuating metal prices with the metallurgy. They know that many factors such as metal price, dedusiions for returning charge, transportation, percentage of metal in head ore, etc.; all affect the commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product. In practically every mill some one at some ' time has calculated the amount of recovery that can be sacrificed for each percentage increase in grade of concentrate and from this calculated ratio the commercial or ., economic tail has been established. Such a ratio finally becomes a well-entrenched rule by which the progress of the metallurgy is judged.. When once established, these-, ratios are but seldom corrected to changes of metal prices for each possible grade of concentrate that may be produced. The calculation is tedious when often repeated. Other methods have been suggested and used to correlate the commercial with the metallurgical phase. A factor .derived ,by multiplying the grade of concentrate by recovery is often used, but is of little importance because it does not possess a single commercial quantity. The percentage monetary recovery calculated by dividing the gross value of the ore into the net smelter return gives a good economic index and, is to be commended, but it is difficult to correlate exactly and quickly the work of each day on a commercial basis.

The main aim of the conference is to work towards improved useage of steelplant slags which have largely been considered waste mater- ials, This paper summarised investigations carried out on the suitability of air cooled blast furnace slag, blast furnace granulated slag and basic oxygen steelmaking slag as road base materials. All slag samples were obtained from the PortòKembla Works of Australian-Iron and Steel Pty Ltd. Since road making materials are increas- ingly being characterised by use of resilient moduli, the compressive strengths and resilient moduli were determined for road base of the following slags. 1 Air cooled crushed blast furnace slag 2 mixes of air cooled blast furnace slag, granulated slag, and lime 3 mixes of air cooled blast furnace slag,-granulated slag and basic oxygen steelmaking slag. Evaluation of a local dacite (dense medium grained igneous rock, classification rhyolite), generally considered an excellent road base course material, was carried out for use as a reference material.

THE Duquesne property of the Callahan Zinc-Lead Co. is about 20 miles east of Nogales, in southern Arizona. One mine is near the mill, but most of the mill feed is hauled in by truck from a number of small mines. The same sulphides are found in all the ores, in general, but the amounts vary considerably. All ores contain silver, copper, lead and zinc minerals but one mine ships ore high in silver and lead and low in copper and zinc; while another mine ships ore high in copper and zinc, and low in silver and lead. The common sulphides are galena, carrying most of the silver; chalcopyrite; sphalerite, carrying iron in solid solution; and pyrite, in a gangue consisting of limestone, quartz and garnet. Mineralization is fairly coarse. At the present grind of about 66 per cent minus 200 mesh most of the sulphides are liberated. A small amount of chalcopyrite is locked up with the sphalerite and cannot be liberated at an economic grind, and the copper carried into the zinc concentrate with the sphalerite accounts for the comparatively poor recovery of copper in the copper-lead concentrate. PRODUCTION OF TWO CONCENTRATES The milling problem, which was complicated by the extreme variation in the grade of the feed, was first attacked with the idea of producing a silver-copper-lead concentrate and a zinc concentrate, both with satisfactory grades and recoveries. By February I94I, it was felt that these objectives had been attained, when the grades of the various products and the recoveries were as shown in Table I. [ ] A rough outline of the flowsheet and reagents used is as follows: Minus ¾ -in. feed to a 7-ft. by 36-in. Hardinge ball mill working in closed circuit with a 36-in. Wemco classifier. The classifier overflow passes to the second cell of an 8-cell bank of No. 18 Special Denver Sub-A flotation machines (volume, 22.5 cu. ft. per cell). A rougher concentrate is removed from the second to the fifth cells inclusive, and returned to the first cell, which is the cleaner. Kennecott Copper Corporation's Chino Mines Division concentrator is located in Hurley, New Mexico. Construction of the concentrator was started in 1910 and its capacity was progressively increased over the years to the present nominal 20, 425 t/d of ore (22, 500 stpd). The principal copper minerals present in the ore are chalcopyrite and chalcocite with much of the chalcotite intimately associated with pyrite. Lime is used to depress pyrite, and flotation at a high pH or alkalinity is required for optimum recovery of chalcocite with good rejection of the pyrite. Regrinding is also required to liberate chalcocite-pyrite middling grains. Accurate control of the lime addition is necessary to obtain both optimum metallurgy and minimum lime usage. At low pH levels, flotation cell control is difficult due to excess froth, but excessively high pH levels can go unnoticed because froth characteristics do not change from those experienced at the deisred pH. With manual control of the lime addition, the desired pH can be exceeded for periods of up to two hours. In 1972 a major renovation of the flotation and regrinding circuits was com¬pleted and at that time a new lime distribution and control system was placed in operation. Limestone is obtained from a nearby quarry west of Hurley. The limestone is crushed, sized and fed to a rotary kiln and the quicklime product is stored prior to slaking. The lime is slaked, as required, in a mixing tank-classifier type slaker and the lime slurry is pumped to a concentrator storage tank from which it is distributed through a conventional closed loop system. The current average lime usage rate is approximately 6 kg/t of ore (12 lb per st).

"A supply of sustainably sourced rare earth elements (REEs) is critical for several high-tech industries, renewable energy technologies, and defense applications. Recent studies have shown that REEs exist in coal and coal combustion byproducts at elevated concentrations and in quantities that could meet domestic demand. Despite these promising findings, declines in rare earth prices, volatile commodity markets, and challenging geo-metallurgical conditions have jeopardized this potentially valuable REE resource. While the dilute REE concentrations inherently necessitate low-cost separation technologies, the ultimately operating cost threshold for economic extraction must be based on commodity price projections and market demand. In this paper, the micro-pricing principle is used to develop a rigorous economic model assessing the inherent value of REEs in coal materials. This model is based upon basket pricing of individual elemental oxides, and elemental distributions of coal samples from various basins. These results may be used to assess the economic viability of potential REE concentration and refining technologies INTRODUCTION Recent efforts by US Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) have suggested that rare earth elements (REEs) may exist in coal and coal byproducts at concentrations suitable for economic extraction and processing. While the knowledge of REE occurrence in coal material dates back over 50 years, recent supply restrictions and material criticality considerations have prompted a national interest to establish a sustainable domestic supply of REEs. REEs are not “rare” in the sense of crustal abundance; however, few natural processes lead to concentrated ore deposits. As a result, the elevated concentrations found in coal material may provide a potentially promising resource for these materials. While the term “rare earths” is often used to describe a singular concept, the 15 rare earth elements actually have varying and sometimes contrasting scarcity and cost profiles. Various authors have proposed classification systems to provide information on REE criticality (e.g. Seredin and Dai, 2012, Zhang et al., 2015). The most straightforward classification is provided on the basis of geochemistry with designations for “light”, “medium” and “heavy” rare earths. Light rare earths (those to the left of the periodic table: Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) tend to be more common and less valuable when compared to their medium (Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Y) and heavy (Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) counterparts. While light rare earths are often found in traditional ore deposits at economic concentrations, the heavier rare earths are almost exclusively found as ion-absorbed clays (Seredin and Dai, 2012)."

NEED for some simple method of determining tonnages in mill circuits has always been felt by operators and consultants alike. To meet this demand the following method was evolved and has been found accurate and practical after considerable testing on various mill flows. The essence of the method is to add a chemical at a uniform rate to a mill flow, such as a launder conveying pulp, and then determine the concentration of the added chemical in a sample of the pulp. From this procedure the tonnage can be calculated. Common table salt has proved the most satisfactory chemical for ordinary conditions. It has many decided advantages for use in tonnage determinations, among them being the following:

The transition temperatures of 0.01 to 0.02 pct carbon steels are shown to be strongly influenced by cooling rate in the a range, quenching from A, causing a very low transition temperature even after strain aging. In a titanium-stabilized steel and in a steel with 0.05 pct C this effect is absent. NORMAL mild structural steels usually show a structure of more or less pure ferrite, as a matrix, in which cementite grains or pearlite are embedded. Of these components, ferrite is by far the most interesting one as far as ductility and brittle (cleavage) fracture are concerned. Obviously, pear-lite and carbide are by no means necessary for a cleavage crack to nucleate and grow in the ferrite, as steels with a very low carbon content (Armco iron with 0.02 pct C) have an impact transition temperature just as high as semikilled steels with 0.26 pct C.1 Although it has been argued that a very embrittling effect is to be expected from cementite, precipitated as continuous films along the ferrite grain boundaries,'. " the micrographic evidence for a direct causal connection between the brittleness and these films does not seem to be very convincing. On the other hand, it has been stated that cementite particles in ferrite are able to stop ferrite cracks.4,5 In any case, the properties of the ferrite itself seem to be of overwhelming importance to the ductility of steels, justifying a thorough study of steels consisting of ferrite of different compositions, but principally free from pearlite, which means a carbon content below 0.02 pct. Such investigations have been carried out using the impact transition temperature as a criterion of the tendency to brittle fracture and have given some rather unexpected results. One result is the profound influence of carbon on the transition temperature of the steel in normalized condition. If the carbon content is reduced from 0.02 to 0.015 pct and below, a nearly discontinuous decrease in transition temperature appears even with high percentages of such elements as phosphorus and nitrogen present. At a meeting of the Anthracite Investigations Advisory Committee in July 1944 at Washington, D. C., the initial work and objectives of the Anthracite Mechanical Mining Section of the Federal Bureau of Mines were discussed. It was learned that interest existed in an improved performance of mining thin, steeply pitching beds above the gangway by mechanical methods. One company offered the use of one of its mines for experimental work, and this offer was accepted. Following acceptance, an effort was made by Bureau engineers to devise a mechanical method with a performance better than that of a new hand method proposed by company engineers for an actual mining condition. The method proposed by the Bureau was to drive 30-degree slant chutes across a 10-foot bed pitching 85 degrees. These chutes were to be advanced by using a lightweight, compressed air-powered, shearing machine of German origin that had been tried in a flat Pennsylvania anthracite bed in 1934, and which did not then prove successful because of blasting difficulties. An attempt was made to obtain one of these machines from England, where it was known machines of this type had been used. Shortly thereafter John W. Buch was sent to Europe as a member of the Solid Fuels Mission to the European Theater of Operations organized by the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Through his efforts the Bureau of Mines obtained two such machines, known as the Eickhoff model DEK, one from England and one from Germany. This report covers the preliminary testing of these machines in order to obtain mechanical operating data for use in determining the power requirements for cutting anthracite with machines of this design.

"Development of a process for the treatment of a nickel copper matte rich in the minerals heazlewoodite, chalcocite and bornite has demonstrated significant base metal recoveries and metal separation efficiencies. The determination of chemical and mineralogical changes occurring in the individual leaching stages in laboratory experiments has enabled a better understanding of the complex leaching chemistry. The chemistry and mineralogy of the piloting and laboratory processes are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe nickel-copper sulfide ores of the South African Bushveld Complex are among the most important Platinum Group Metal (PGM) bearing ores, and contain the world’s largest reserves of platinum. The treatment used in the recovery of PGMs from these ores includes three types of processes, namely ore concentration using physical techniques such as flotation and gravity separation, concentration by pyrometallurgical means, hydrometallurgical extraction of the base metals followed by the PGMs. Following milling of the ore, flotation involves the separation of high value minerals from gangue by taking advantage of the differences in their hydrophobicity. These differences are generally maximized through the use of a surfactant or wetting agent. Concentrates are then thermally treated and melted which brings about physical and chemical changes that enable the recovery of base metals and PGMs. The main aim of the smelting and converting process is to separate and eliminate the valuable metals from the bulk of the unwanted gangue and essentially all of the iron and to concentrate the metal VALUES (into a high grade converter matte. The matte can be further enriched by magnetic separation, producing a PGM-rich magnetic fraction and a base metal-rich non-magnetic fraction. The magnetic fraction is treated by hydrometallurgical processes to produce a PGM concentrate which is further refined to separate and purify the individual metals. The non-magnetic fraction is treated to produce marketable metal VALUES (such as nickel, copper, cobalt and to a lesser extent PGMs. The principal objective of any hydrometallurgical extractive process is to leach the desired elements selectively into an aqueous phase so as to separate them from the bulk of the material. The study of "bottom-hole' samples follow,-is in natural sequence the study of samples3 obtained under high pressures at the well heads of flowing wells. The principal object of this phase of gas-solubility research, started actively in January, 1530, was to gain a more accurate knowledge of the physical and chemical characteristics of the oil-gas mixtures that exist in natural reservoirs. In possession of actual data regarding the condition of the oil; the quantity of gas liberated from solution upon dimunition of pressure; and the relative volumetric proportions of gas to oil at various pressures throughout the flow string in a well, it should be possible to predict, with a fair degree of accuracy, what physical changes these mixtures would undergo throughout the life of a pool. Such information not only is important in designing flow strings in flowing wells but is important also in solving problems relating to pumping efficiency and the power required for pumping. Although certain fundamental rata Mere obtained in the stud of samples taken at the well head, "bottom-hole" samples are more representative of subsurface mixtures of oil and gas because they are obtained at reservoir temperatures, and before the oil has had the opportunity of intermingling with extraneous gas; that is, gas which either was not in solution originally, or which was liberated from solution at some higher pressure, and later became mired with the original undissolved gas.

Since its inception the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development of portable mine lamps. Although there is still much to be desired with respect to illumination in coal and metal mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow the Bureau has been given credit for assisting materially in the development and introduction of the safe and efficient portable mine-lighting equipment available today. Much of the work conducted by the electrical section of the Bureau entails approval tests of various types of electrical equipment, including lamps; to be used in atmospheres that may contain methane or coal dust in explosive proportion. If a can lamp meets the requirements-for safety, efficiency, and adequacy, as published in Schedule 6B,4 it is approved and is generally known as a "permissible" lamp. The terms "approved" and '"permissible' often are used interchangeably. The manufacturer must put an approval plate on each approved lamp, showing it has mot the schedule requirements. The approval plate is not a guarantee that the lamp is safe. However, if the lamp, once in service, has not had any parts changed or improperly assembled or if carts that wear out or depreciate have been properly replaced it should still, be safe, efficient, and adequate for the service intended. Virtually all electric cap lamps in service today in the United States and a great many that have been sent to foreign countries bear the approval plate of the United States Bureau of Mines. Although many explosions have been attributed to open lights none has been charged against the permissible cap lamp. Nystagmus, a disease of the eye attributed to working under insufficient illumination, is practically unknown among; American miners, although it is quite prevalent among European miners.

The Mather mine of The Negaunee Mine Co. embraces nearly all of Sections 1 and 2, T47N, R27W, within the limits of the cities of Negaunee and Ishpeming on the Marquette iron range of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Operations of the Negaunee Mine Co., the stock of which is jointly owned by Bethlehem Steel Co. and The Cleve-land-Cliffs Iron Co., are under the direction of the latter company. The opening of the Mather mine was described by C. W. Al1en.† Mather " A " shaft was completed to an initial depth of 2352 ft in early 1943. The shaft capacity of over one million tons yearly is in prospect of being realized by orderly development and mining, and sinking of the second or "B" shaft then started in accordance with previous planning. Mather "B," also a vertical shaft, was designed as a twin to Mather "A" shaft and the sinking technique developed at Mather "A" was utilized in "B" shaft operation. Shaft Sinking General Plan An average depth of 16 ft of sand overburden at the shaft site was cleared away by bulldozer, and the shaft approximately 15 by 20 ft in rock opening put down to an initial depth of 87 ft. Mucking of the broken rock to this depth was accomplished by an Insley excavator equipped with a 1/2 yard ca-pacity Owens clamshell bucket. Addition of 200 lb weight to each lip of the clam bucket provided adequate "bite" to dig the broken diorite and jasper rock. Temporary heavy wood bearers were placed across the shaft mouth to support the steel shaft sets which were hung in this initial 87 ft depth, aligned accurately and concreted in place from the lowest set upwards. The permanent steel headframe foundations and three service tunnel openings to the shaft were also concreted in the upper section to the shaft collar. A temporary wood headframe was then erected over the shaft mouth, and initial hoisting machinery assembled consisting of a Lake Shore 12 ft diam single drum grooved for a 1 3/8 in. rope and powered by two 400 hp motors to attain hoisting speed of 1100 fpm. Compressed air was obtained from a Nordberg 2 stage tandem horizontal type with a capacity of 1500 cfm. An enclosed landing platform at the shaft collar was equipped with a rotary dump and pocket for discharge of the rock into a Euclid 15 ton truck. On completing assembly of this equipment and installation of a special cage in the shaft, sinking was resumed on a three shift, six days per week

The Kiruna area is an important mining province in northern Sweden, which is dominated by Fe- and Cu-Au deposits. Economically most important for the region, are the apatite iron ores with an annual production of c. 43 M ton of crude Fe-ore and a total production of more than 2000 M ton of ore the last 100 years. The apatite iron ores in the Kiruna area are dominated by either Magnetite or Haematite and contain varying amounts of apatite giving them a content of Fe and P, which varies between 30-70 % and 0.05-5 %, respectively. A typical geochemical feature of the ores is the strong enrichment of REE that is caused by a high content of REE in apatite and the occurrence of Allanite and Monazite containing 22.4 and 69.8 wt% REO, respectively. At Kiirunavaara, the content of REE in apatite varies between 0.07 to 1.57 wt% REO with a dominance for the light rare earths. The variation in REE-content of apatite depending on textural and paragenetic aspects is not known but apatite grains may display a strong LREE-depletion due to hydrothermal alteration. Monazite occurs as rod-shaped or tabular inclusions in apatite and is suggested, to have formed in response to hydrothermal alteration of apatite after the emplacement of the ore. Inclusions are mainly found in the central part of apatite grains occurring in veins and schliren, while they are rare in apatite occurring disseminated in the ore. Monazite also occurs as larger grains outside apatite and together with Allanite is found in texturally and paragenetically different settings within the ore. These occurrences of REE-minerals may largely be a product of LREE mobilized by alteration of apatite after the emplacement of the ore. However, REE-minerals including Allanite and Monazite might also have formed directly from late magmatic fluids. O efeito da convecção forçada foi estudado na micro e macroestrutura de lingotes de silício grau metalúrgico obtidos pela solidificação unidirecional a partir da extração de calor por uma base refrigerada em contato com o fundo do cadinho com o banho líquido. Um disco sob rotação foi imerso no silício líquido para promover a convecção forçada. Em lingotes de 100 mm, esta convecção aumenta de 8 para 80 mm o comprimento de uma região de grãos colunares claramente alinhados e livre de intermetálicos, indicando um aumento da macrossegregação. Um modelo de transferência de calor e massa indica que o aumento de transporte de soluto causado pela convecção forçada diminui o super-resfriamento constitucional e, consequentemente, aumenta a estabilidade da interface sólido-líquido plana, sem células ou dendritas. A ausência de células e dendritas pode ter contribuído para a maior macrossegregação de impurezas observada sob efeito de convecção forçada.

"The proposed reconstruction of I-75 downtown consists of widening an approximately 2.46 Km section of IR-75 through the northern section of downtown Dayton, OH, USA. Bridge B-13 is a 9-span continuos prestressed concrete I-beam, 319.0-meter (1,048-foot) long bridge with a stub abutment on MSE walls for the rear abutment, and a stub abutment with spill-through slopes for the forward abutment. The piers in the river were located parallel to the Great Miami River, and are full-height reinforced concrete walls. PRESSUREMETER TEST PROCEDUREThe driller advanced either casing or augers approximately 1 meter above the pressuremeter test. Steel casing was used to advance borings performed in the river, and augers were used for borings on land. Mud rotary drilling with a large diameter roller bit was used to remove all of the gravel and cobble fragments inside the casing or augers.At the pressuremeter test elevation the driller used a 63.5-mm (2.5-inch) carbide button bi-cone bit, using a rotation rate of about 60 rpm, a mud fl ow rate of about 10 gallons per minute (40 liters per minute), and an advance rate of 6 to 10 minutes per meter (2 to 3 minutes per foot). To minimize vibrations, advance rates were slower where excessive cobbles were encountered. The 63.5-mm (2.5-inch) O.D. slotted casing pressuremeter was lowered to the test elevation, often requiring either pushing or hammering into the test zone. We believe that the test zone was not perfectly straight, or that gravel or cobble fragments jutted into the test zone and had to be displaced to advance the pressuremeter into the test zone. The slotted casing prevented membrane damage during insertion. A photograph of the slotted casing being lowered into the borehole is shown below.The pressuremeter was calibrated for system compressibility and membrane resistance. At full expansion of 800 cm3, the membrane resistance of the slotted casing was about 2.5 bars.Strain-controlled tests were performed using a Texam control unit with a monocell probe. Volume increments of 20 cm3 were injected into the probe and corresponding pressures were measured. Near the end of the elastic portion of the test, an unload-reload cycle was done. A creep test was performed for 10 minutes at the next volume increment. The test continued until either 800 cm3 were injected or the membrane burst."

1. In the United States, the industrial application of centrifugal force for separating phase constituents has been confined almost entirely to aqueous systems at room temperature. This paper presents results for experimental tests on the use of centrifugal force for separating the liquid and solid phases in molten nonferrous alloys. 2. The development and use of a small centrifuge for treating molten metals is described. The centrifugal apparatus was, in essence, a 3-inch diameter spinner pot, which revolved, within -a gas -fired furnace, at speeds up to 3,000 r.p.m.
