It is well known in the industry that good classification system performance is vital to efficient ball mill circuit performance. But what is meant by good classification system performance, and how is it achieved? Unfortunately, the perceived complexity of classification systems, and the day-to-day time demands placed on the practicing metallurgist, all too often put the low-hanging fruit of classification system optimisation in the ‘I’ll do it later’ basket. Additionally, lingering confusion about basics such as the relationship between circulating load ratio and ball mill circuit performance makes the optimisation objective seem nebulous to both plant metallurgist and designer.Some of this confusion can be eliminated by taking a step back from the overwhelming detail of sharpness of separation curves, circulating load ratios, cyclone feed pressures, vortex and apex sizes etc, and focusing on the purpose or function of the classification system – to apply mill power to particles that need further size reduction! The classification system efficiency (CSE) metric captures how well the classification system is performing its function with two quick and easy size distribution analyses.Once CSE is understood and implemented as the optimisation criteria, well-tested methods for improving CSE can be implemented and quickly measured at plant scale to give confidence that the right change was made.This paper will describe CSE and how it is measured in practice. Next, a guide for improving CSE through manipulation of design and operating variables in the classification system will be provided. This paper will deal with on-site maintenance welding using the stick electrode, electric arc process. It is primarily concerned with the underlying principles, the application of which, or the lack of such application, governs the success or failure of the operation. It will discuss first the base metal or item to be welded, including the field identification of its weld-ability and the determination of the procedures to be followed. Second, it will outline heat effects and the interrelation between heat applied as part of a welding operation and heat deliberately applied as part of a heat treating cycle, stressing the fact that in welding the same basic principles are effective. The third consideration will be weld metal and its control of both composition and properties. Last, but not least, distortion, shrinkage and residual stress will be considered and practical means for minimizing their adverse effects outlined.

Electrowinning consumes a substantial amount of electrical energy, and owing to the ever-increasing unit cost of electrical power there is a need to improve current efficiency in the process. This research was carried out to design a continuous quality improvement framework for improving electrowinning current efficiency by applying statistical process control (SPC) on an online industrial copper electrowinning operation. A sequential mixed research methodology was applied and a statistical software package utilized for analysing data. It was concluded that metallurgical short-circuits (hotspots) had the most significant effect on current efficiency. Bringing hotspots under statistical control resulted in a 5.40% improvement in current efficiency, which is equivalent to approximately 74 t of 99.999% pure grade A copper cathode production over a period of 1.5 months.

1. Reserve estimates have been made for eight coal beds in Monongalia County, W. Va., but only the Pittsburgh, Sewickley, and Upper Freeport beds are important at this time. The Pittsburgh, Sewickley, Waynesburg, and Upper Freeport beds contain the largest recoverable reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 3,526 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 3,294 mil-lion tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed except the Pittsburgh were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

Rib brows present a significant safety hazard in underground coal mines in the United States. To address this issue, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST) are developing a practical tool to assess both the potential of rib brow formation and the stability of any formed brows. As part of this effort, a monitoring study was conducted to assess the potential for rib brow formation in coal pillar ribs. This study was conducted in a room-and-pillar coal mine where coal pillar ribs are prone to developing rib brows. Although no rib brows formed in the instrumented pillar, data from monitoring and visual observations provided valuable insights into the loading mechanisms impacting the instrumented pillar. These findings helped identify factors that may reduce rib brow formation, including the cavability of the roof in mined areas, the applied rib support, the strength of rock partings, and the overall integrity of the coal seam. The scientific findings published in the case study aid in assessing the potential of brow formation, offering additional evidence for the need to improve rib control methods in underground coal mines.

Wireless technologies are increasingly being implemented in underground mines for various purposes such as communications, tracking, remote control, remote sensing, and environmental monitoring. However, the adoption comes with risks as common wireless systems, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, IWT (Innovative Wireless Technologies) wireless system, often operate in the unlicensed ISM (industrial, scientific, and medical) band. The shared nature of the ISM band can lead to interference among devices and consequently cause performance degradation and reliability issues. In this study, we developed two wireless communication evaluation boards as a tool to evaluate the performance and reliability of a wireless system with the presence of electromagnetic interferences (EMI) from other wireless systems in underground environments. We adjusted various parameters including signal power from adjacent frequency channels, noise power within the same channel, the movement of personnel, and communication packet size. Our findings indicate that, while the power of the EMI source plays a key role, the motion of personnel in the tunnel also has a strong impact on performance, and this impact increases as the power of EMI sources increases. In noisy environments, smaller packet sizes are preferable as they enhance the likelihood of successful transmission. High levels of interference or noise can lead to increased packet loss or error rates, potentially causing communication links to fail completely or become ineffective. The evaluation boards utilized in this study are based on a practical wireless transmission system deployed in a remote controller for a heavy mining machinery used in underground coal mines. The results and findings presented in this paper can aid in the design of wireless systems that are resilient to EMI in underground mining environments.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated mines, prospects, and mineralized areas in the Owlshead Mountains Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in 1982. Within the WSA, subeconomic manganese, iron, zinc, and lead resources were identified at two mines; sample analyses indicate five other mines and prospects may have gold, silver, iron, manganese, and copper resources. Three mines examined adjacent to the WSA have identified manganese and iron resources; and sample analyses indicate manganese, iron, and gypsum resources may exist at two prospects. Greatest likelihood for future identification of mineral reserves is for manganese at the Black Magic Mine in the southeast part of the WSA. The southern half of the WSA contains nearly all identified mineral resources, and properties at which sample analyses indicate additional resources. The most significant are manganese and iron resources at the Black Magic Mine in the southeastern part of the WSA; and the Ellie, New Deal, and Owl Hole Mines adjacent to that part of the area. Manganese and iron minerals filled fractures and replaced limestone in brecciated and faulted contacts with intrusive granitic rocks. In the southwest corner of the WSA, sample analyses indicate four prospects may have gold and silver resources. These precious metals are in gouge zones along contacts where diorite has intruded volcanic rocks. A small identified resource at the Kennedy Boys Lead Mine in the western part of the WSA consists of quartz veins with zinc and lead minerals along a brecciated contact between granite and limestone roof pendants.

THE major metal mine operations of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company in Utah are in the Bingham area. The Company also owns and operates metal mines in the Ophir district, twelve miles south of Bingham, and in the Tintic district, 28 miles south of Ophir. Operations of the Company in the Park City area have been idle since early in World War II. These mining camps, lying at moderate elevations, serviced by railroads, hard-surfaced highways, in close proximity to mills, smelters, cities and towns, fertile valleys, winter and summer vacation areas, and airports are probably as favorably situated as any mining camps in the world. "Precipitation of gypsum and the formation of scale may pose a serious challenge in the leaching of several minerals. As an example, precipitated gypsum may form scale in the machines increasing the need for maintenance. Alternatively, it may encapsulate precious elements, i.e. gold and lower the recovery during subsequent leach processes. In this work we explore how different biopolymers modify the rheology of gypsum at three different pH levels at ambient and elevated temperatures. The ability to disperse gypsum vary with temperature, pH and biopolymer. It is also inversely related to the scaling potential. Measurements of the zeta potential as a function of increasing amounts of biopolymer reveals that the magnitude of the zeta potential changes in the presence of biopolymer, and so does the ability to disperse the gypsum suspension. Similar results with hematite will also be discussed. The methodology and results may aid in the selection of additives used in mineral processing applications where scale pose a problem.INTRODUCTION Processing of refractory gold ores normally involve either atmospheric or oxidation under pressure in order to convert sulfides to oxides (Weir, King, & Robinson, 1986; Weir, Robinson, & King, 1986). This conversion facilitates leaching of gold (and silver) in normal CIL processes. During oxidation, sulfides are converted to sulfates. Normally, there is an abundance of calcium ions in the process water, either released from the ore or added as lime to adjust pH for the CIL process. Precipitation of calcium sulfate, or other compounds (calcium carbonate, jarosite, hematite) is a way to remove gangue minerals from the solution entering the CIL circuit (Ji, King, Fleming, & Ferron, 2010). Precipitation may also cause challenges in the process as gold (or other valuable elements) may become encapsulated in gangue. (Beauchamp, Choung, & Xu, 2006). In addition to precipitation, the precipitated gangue minerals may solidify and form scale in the processing equipment. Recently, Lauten and Kluck (2016) found that dispersants used as scale inhibitors to prevent encapsulation of gypsum did not modify the solubility of gypsum. In the utilised model system, similar amounts of gypsum precipitated with and without dispersants. Instead, it was found that the dispersants evaluated as scale inhibitors reduced the yield stress of gypsum suspensions. The reduced yield stress was associated with a reduced tendency for gypsum particles to agglomerate and form scale."

The carbonthermal reduction of high Mg–Si nickel laterite was studied under vacuum. The effects of adding calcium oxide and the reducing agent on the reduction of silicon in residue were studied at pressures of 10–200 Pa and different temperatures, with varying proportions of carbon and CaO. The analysis of the residue was performed using X-ray diffraction and chemical composition analysis. The results show the following: At 1350 °C with a C/O ratio of 1.5:1, the recovery of Si reached a maximum 71.09%. Under these conditions, Si exists mainly in the forms of Fe3Si, Fe2Si, FeSi and SiC. The recovery of Si was above 80% when the temperature was 1450 °C, the C/O ratio 1:1, and 15% addition of CaO. When CaO addition was 22.61%, all of the solid phase was Ca2SiO4.

Mr. Grieves' paper on "Shaft Sinking Today --A Boring Business Tomorrow" in the Dec. 1981 issue of MINING ENGINEERING is an excellent description of recent improvements in speed and costs of shaft sinking. However, shaft boring techniques are not a recent development. In 1935-36, the Idaho Maryland Co. (gold), Grass Valley, CA, bored the vertical 1.5-m-diam Idaho No. 2 ventilation and supply shaft to a depth of 346 m. The equipment was designed and perfected by Branner Newsome and was, I believe, described in "Transactions." Pickands Mather later bored a 1.8-m-diam shaft to a depth of about 305 m using Newsome's design. The Idaho No. 2 shaft cut through hard gabbro, diabase dikes, soft serpentine, very incompetent ankeritized serpentine and a strong fault zone. The completed shaft did not require timber support; the fault zone was cemented. Equipment consisted of a rotating 1.5-m or 3-m core barrel with a slotted bottom which cut a 76-mm kerf. The cutting agent was chilled steel shot introduced into the slot as needed. The driving mechanism and core barrel were lowered into the shaft, the former secured to the wall and the inshaft "engineer" operated the motors which controlled core barrel rpm and advance. After an advance of 1.5-3 m the equipment was lifted out of the shaft, a half(?) stick of powder cut off the drilled core, and it was hoisted to the surface with a cable attached to an eye bolt at the tope of the core. A "shift" consisted of three men: hoistman, equipment operator (down the shaft), and a surface laborer. Advance was variable as equipment and techniques were perfected. Near the end of the job advance was, as I remember, 1.5-3 m per shift. Costs were, as I recall, about $115/m. Up to 4 m cores were lifted out in one piece and swung to the dump by a stiff leg derrick. The Newsome equipment was relatively inexpensive to build and operate and his method should be (more than?) competetive with the methods described by Grieves.

The development of automatic image analysers brought the application of image analysis into process mineralogy because the analysers can measure parameters more easily, quickly and accurately than by manual grain counting techniques, and can also collect data unobtainable by manual grain counting. Data from ore specimens and mill products are used to predict and to define the behaviour of minerals during processing. The analyses are generally performed on the basis of either surface areas or linear intercepts of grains in polished or thin sections, and the data are computer processed to give mineral quantities, liberations, size distributions, and characteristics of middling particles. For analysis, the minerals must be detectable and discriminatable from each other. An image editor is usually used when minerals are not easily discriminated. In addition BSE-8EM photographs have been used where the silicate minerals could not be discriminated from the mounting media. Methods of analysis, typical results, and their applications are discussed.

Visando o estudo da sinergia entre abrasão e corrosão concebeu-se um novo instrumento, permitindo a medição das forças que atuam sobre o contacto. O dispositivo consiste de um equipamento de micro-abrasão por esfera fixa dotada de uma célula de carga de três eixos, e uma célula eletroquímica. Uma membrana protetora flexível foi desenvolvida para isolar a célula de carga, situado no exterior da célula eletroquímica, da amostra no interior da célula. Uma solução corrosiva com partículas abrasivas é continuamente alimentada no contacto entre a amostra e a esfera. Os ensaios de abrasão-corrosão foram realizados simultaneamente em aços inoxidáveis e ferríticos. Também foram executados ensaios de micro-abrasão e corrosão separadamente para avaliar a capacidade do equipamento nos estudos da sinergia entre a micro-abrasão e a corrosão. Para as três condições de ensaios (micro-abrasão, corrosão e abrasãocorrosão) o equipamento se mostrou eficiente em evidenciar a variação nas propriedades do material com excelente repetibilidade. Para os aços austeníticos, as mudanças nas condições de carregamento nos ensaios de abrasão-corrosão induziram variações significativas nas curvas de polarização. A capacidade única de acompanhar as forças que atuam sobre o contato dos processos de abrasão-corrosão pode abrir caminho para novas descobertas sobre o estudo da sinergia na abrasão-corrosão, em especial, a dissipação de energia na interface quantificada através do coeficiente de atrito.

"A numerical conditioning analysis for mineral recovery estimation was performed for industrial flotation plants, considering the copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo) and iron (Fe) separability. A modified relative condition number, ?, was presented that allowed sensitivity analysis to be evaluated for the component recovery by means of an analytical formula. This closed form made it possible for the error propagation to be determined from feed, concentrate and tail grades with different orders of magnitude. The ? parameter can be evaluated using available grade data from the design criteria or historical mass balances, in which the variability is typically unknown. Reconciled data from different Cu/Mo concentrators were employed to evaluate the effect of small numerical disturbances in the grade data on the mineral recovery estimation. Higher error propagation was typically observed for Fe. The Mo minerals presented numerical problems, mainly in second cleaners and in the first cell of rougher banks. Lower condition numbers were observed for Cu due to the higher flotation rates.Mass-balance data reconciliation without redundancy was evaluated for a typical Cu/Mo flotation circuit using relative error minimization. Significant relative errors in the mineral recovery estimation were obtained with nonreconciled data in ill-conditioned problems. Negligible improvements in the mineral recovery estimation because of the data reconciliation with regard to the nonreconciled approach were obtained in well-conditioned problems. In addition, the improvements in mineral recovery estimation by using Cu, Mo and Fe in the data reconciliation were nonsignificant with respect to using only the best-conditioned component in well- and ill-conditioned problems.Despite the effort in data reconciliation and data repetition, poor performance may be obtained in ill-conditioned problems, which can deteriorate the flotation rate characterization. The error propagation has a negative impact on the mineral recovery of the first cell, which may significantly bias the flotation rate characterization of both valuable and nonvaluable elements.IntroductionMass balances have been extensively used in flotation processes to determine the mass flowrates (production) and mineral recovery (efficiency) of valuable minerals. Simple relationships for steadystate processes based on the feed, concentrate and tail grades can be obtained by taking a black-box approach. However, the calculation of concentrate flowrates from different components of the system, such as size fractions, chemical elements or minerals, does not satisfy the mass-conservation principle because of measurement errors (Smith and Ichiyen, 1973; Romagnoli and Sánchez, 2000). Mass-balance data reconciliation allows for obtaining a unique solution that satisfies the total and component mass balances, making small adjustments to the process data and taking advantage of the information redundancy (Narasimhan and Jordache, 2000). This methodology, which is based on a constrained weighted least-squares minimization, has proved to be robust when measurement errors are normally distributed, in the absence of gross errors.Commercial software has been developed to conduct massbalance data reconciliation in flotation processes, including MATBAL (Algosys, 2002), BILMAT (Algosys, 2013), JKMultibal (JKTech, 2013), BILCO (Caspeo, 2013) and HSC Chemistry (Outotec, 2013), which accomplish the reconciliation using known data accuracy in the optimization problem. The data accuracy can be obtained by sampling a stream n times in a run, known as repeats, each with independent chemical assays. Some unmeasured variables can be estimated using the measuring redundancy and sensor location. At present, grade and flow rate sensors may be incorporated in flotation to conduct real-time mass balances. A detailed description is given of Bunker Hill's concentration process employed at the company's lead-zinc property in the Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho. The plant is equipped to process 3000 tpd of Pb-Zn ore. The history of the Bunker Hill mine dates back to Aug. 26, 1885, when Noah S. Kellogg found the outcrop of the Bunker Hill orebody on the hillside of Milo Gulch above the present town of Wardner, Idaho. A small concentrator was erected in 1886, and before the railroad came, the mine output was transported by mule teams to the head of navigation on Coeur d'Alene Lake. After ten years of production, an interest was purchased in the Tacoma smelter at Tacoma, Wash., to which the entire output was shipped. In 1916 and 1917, a modern lead smelting plant and refinery was erected, and a modern electrolytic zinc reduction plant was built in 1927-1928 by the Sullivan Mining Co. which was 50 pct owned (and now totally owned) by the Bunker Hill Co. The first concentrator, a 100-tpd capacity plant, was built in 1886 near the Reed Tunnel in Wardner. The treatment consisted simply of crushing ore to 2 in. and then to 1/2 in. through rolls in closed circuit with a bucket elevator and trommel screen. The undersize was further sized in trommels to 10 mm and 3 mm. Oversize from the latter was treated in Hartz jigs. The 3 mm undersize was classified in crude hydraulic classifiers furnishing sands to sand jigs, the overflow being dewatered in a long V tank which supplied sands to a Cornish buddle and to Frue vanners. The concentrates were of excellent grade, old records showing assays of 69 pct lead and 29 oz. of silver per ton. Tailings were high inasmuch as the provision for treating the slimes was inadequate. Since the erection of the first mill, the Bunker Hill plant has gone through many changes and improvements. In succeeding years, the flowsheet was enlarged somewhat with Huntington and Chilean mills, vanners, tables, ball mills, and flotation cells being progressively added. In the transition period to the present day practice, the object was not only to improve the equipment for better mechanical performance, but to add new equipment whenever practicable so as to improve both grade and recovery of the product at a lower cost. For the modern plant and flow-sheet, see Figs. 1 and 2. The history of flotation at Bunker Hill dates back to 1913 when experimental work was done in a cell in which the pulp was circulated through a centrifugal pump set outside the cell and discharged against a baffle in the cell. The cell was built with a spitzkasten, and the quiet zone in the latter tended to let the froth break down before it got to the overflow weir. To remedy this situation, a belt drag with light metal flights was arranged for drawing off the froth over a ramp in each cell. Recovery of lead was not as high as present day practice, but was so much better than the vanners that the cells were multiplied gradually to eight cell units. The mill men called them mud hens. Flow between the cells was controlled by a weir, which determined the pulp level in each cell. These early machines were called Bunker Hill machines. The tailings were later treated in pneumatic scavenger flotation machines in a series, producing concentrates for retreatment in the Bunker Hill cleaners as well as the final tailings. This system of flotation served with minor changes until the Fahrenwald machine was developed at Bunker Hill during the period from 1921 to 1925. In 1925, the Fahrenwald flotation machine gradually replaced the Bunker Hill machine, although the Hearing pneumatic scavengers for retreatment of the tailings from the Fahrenwald machines were retained in the lead section until 1928. The use of the Hearing pneumatic machine for cleaning the rougher concentrates was begun in 1924. In 1941, plans were made for remodeling and modernizing the concentrator, the goal being a modern concentrator employing the latest equipment and milling practices. The old wooden building was to be replaced by a steel and concrete structure. Shortly after preliminary work got under way, the United States entered World War II and the demands for metals increased. To meet this requirement, the management decided to increase the capacity of the concentrator to 1800 tpd. This was accomplished in record time by the construction and operation of a sink-float plant. Installation of this plant was the first step in the general plan for modernization. In 1947 the concentrator (including the sink-float plant) was enlarged to handle 3000 tpd. Milling operations today are at the rate of 2300 tpd, five days per week. During 1959, 453,000 tons of ore was beneficiated. The Bunker Hill concentrator is in three sections: the crushing plant, a 3000-ton capacity storage bin, and the concentrator building. The crushing plant is of wood design with a gunnite coating on the exterior.

Comminution is one of the fundamentals of mineral processing, requiring large expenditures to be made on capital equipment, installation, power and maintenance. The trend toward lower grades and higher operating costs, mean mining operations are becoming increasingly marginal. The challenge is to improve and more importantly, utilize crushing and milling technologies that provide for reduced capital and operating costs whilst providing increased unit efficiencies. The Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill presents such an opportunity by providing many of the cost savings and production increases required by its ability to produce a finer mill feed size and realize reduced energy consumption. This paper briefly describes the operation of the Svedala Barmac Autogenous Crushing Mill and reviews its benefits towards improving the efficiency of crushing and milling operations.

The previous papers have been concerned only with the atmospheric oxidation of coals from the Barnsley Seam, for which it has been shown that an adequate explanation of the origin and nature of gob-fires can be based on the reaction between the coal itself and the oxygen of the air without the intervention of any other substance. It becomes of importance, therefore, to ascertain how far a similar explanation will hold good for spontaneous heating in other seams, and with this object in view samples including anthracite and lignite have been taken from a considerable number of pits in different parts of the UK (south Wales, Northumberland and Durham, north Staffordshire, Portrush and Ayrshire), some liable to fire, others not. There is abundant evidence to support the commonly-accepted view that spontaneous heating is due to the heat evolved during the absorption of oxygen from the air by coal or pyrites. The quantity of heat produced by the reaction has been measured and it has been shown that the observed rate of heating of a sample of coal agrees with the rate calculated from the heat of reaction and the rate of absorption of oxygen

The Oatman District produced approximately 2.2 x 10 6 ounces of gold and 0.8 x 10 ounces of silver between 1897 and 1942. A total of 3.8 x 10 tons of ore averaging 0.58 O/T gold and 0.17 O/T silver was extracted from eight major orebodies and a number of lesser deposits. Oatman lies at the center of a trachyte-latite-rhyolite volcanic complex which contains at least one resurgent caldera. The orebodies are typical epithermal quartz-calcite + adularia lode deposits which are very deficient in sulfur. Ore deposition has occurred within dilatant zones on faults which radiate from a common point within-the complex. Fischer-Watt Mining approached the Oatman District with an integrated exploration program utilizing four basic procedures to define the characteristics of past productive areas the results of which were applied to unexplored portions of the vein system. These procedures, listed in their order of usefulness, in defining known and prospective mineralized zones are: vein contouring, detailed alteration mapping, fluid inclusion temperature determinations, and geochemical sampling.

A comprehensive research program designed to aid development of new and improved methods for more complete production of petroleum from partly depleted reservoirs is being conducted at the Bureau of Mines Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla. Water flooding has accounted for much of the petroleum produced by secondary-recovery methods; however, a considerable portion of the crude oil commonly remains in place after water flooding has been terminated. In recent years the possibility of increasing the efficiency of water flooding by using surface-active additives has received wide attention. In general, the results of laboratory research have shown that use of detergents as water-flooding additives will reduce the residual petroleum in porous media (1).3/ Some less extensive field tests have supported this conclusion but have not been entirely conclusive (2). Later studies (3, 4) have given conflicting evidence as to the relative worth of detergent additives for water floods in water-wet (hydrophilic) or oil-wet (hydrophobic or lipophilic) reservoir materials. The results of these studies emphasize the need for a more complete understanding of the fundamental principles involved in displacing petroleum from reservoir surfaces by injected fluids. Accordingly, a comprehensive research program was initiated to investigate the practical and fundamental aspects of detergency in petroleum production.
