In the upper part of the planned location of the portal of a highway tunnel, there was a steep rock cliff with several unstable rock blocks. It seemed that the risk of those rock blocks to fall was very high. The cut-out to stabilize the rock cliff was monitored with various measuring instruments to prevent the sudden fall of the rock blocks. This paper discusses the measurement of acoustic emission and interpretation of its result during excavation of the rock cliff. We calculated displacements by integrating the accelerogram twice in terms of time, and demonstrated that slight displacements can be calculated from the measured AEs. Dans la partie supérieure de l’emplacement prévu pour le portail d’un tunnel autoroutier, il y avait un escarpement rocheux raide avec plusieurs blocs rocheux instables. Le risque de chute de ces blocs semblait très élevé. Lors de la coupe pour stabiliser l’escarpement rocheux, le suivi a été effectué avec différents instruments de mesure pour éviter la chute brutale des blocs rocheux. Cette thèse présente les mesures d’émission acoustique (EA) et l’interprétation de leurs résultats pendant l’excavation de l’escarpement rocheux. Nous avons calculé des déplacements en intégrant l’accélérogramme deux fois par rapport au temps, et montré que de petits déplacements sont calculables à partir des EA mesurées. Die Gefahr schien sehr groß zu sein, dass diese Felsenblöcke einstürzen können. Beim Abbau um die Stabilisierung des Felsens wurde das Monitoring mit verschiedenen Messinstrumenten zusammengestellt, um den plötzlichen Verfall der Felsenblöcke zu verhindern. Das vorliegende Papier diskutiert die Akustische Emission und die Auslegung deren Ergebnisse während des Abbaus des Felsens. Wir berechneten die Verschiebungen durch zweimalige Integrierung der Accelerogrammen in Bezug auf die Zeit. Die dargestellten kleinen Verschiebungen können aus den gemessten akustischen Emissionen berechnet werden.

Bendigo Mining operates a 600 000 t/a comminution, gravity, flotation and leaching processing plant for the recovery of gold from their Kangaroo Flat Operation, in the Bendigo goldfields. The free gold and gold bearing sulfi des present are typically coarse grained and hence are highly amenable to gravity recovery. Plant operating data is consistently showing that over 78 per cent of the feed gold is recovered in a circuit, consisting of inline pressure jigs, inline spinners followed by free gold tabling and intensive leaching of tabling tails. The circuit receives coarse crushed product from high pressure grinding rolls and the grinding mill discharge, which allows material to be re-circulated through the gravity process until the particles are small enough to enter the flotation circuit. A plant audit was completed on 26 November 2009 designed to give an indication of the overall operational characteristics of the gravity circuit including single pass efficiencies of associated equipment. The techniques, results and challenges of such a survey are discussed.

This paper describing the mining practice at the Pecos mine of the American Metal Co. of New Mexico, a subsidiary of the American Metal Co., Ltd., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mine is producing about 18,000 tons per month of zinc-lead-copper ore, chiefly by the square-set and cut-and-fill methods. Costs are given for 1927, 1928, and 1929, the whole producing life of the mine to date.

In response to the implementation of a new schedule for iron ore fines in the International Maritime OrganizationÆs (IMO) International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code, improved measures for the management of moisture have been developed. In particular, prediction of cargo moisture allows management of iron ore fines within the supply?chain to facilitate the safe?shipping of iron ore fines.An ARIMA model, augmented to allow for shipment tonnage, has been developed to predict the moisture level from previous shipments of the same product. The model explains about 60 per cent of the moisture variance. It was found that inclusion of other available information, such as ore composition, train/rake assays and recent rainfall at port and mine, did not add to the predictive power of the model.CITATION:Everett, J E, Linden, D and Maney, P, 2013. Muckpile fragmentation formed by blasting depends on the specific charge factor, the discontinuities in the rock mass, and the rock strength. Determination of the discontinuity characteristics and rock strength is a long and difficult process. These two parameters are directly associated with the rock drilling speed. Therefore, it is the drilling speed of the machine used for the blast-hole, rather than the blasthole discontinuity characteristics and rock strength parameters, that is used in the prediction of muckpile fragmentation before blasting. Primarily, it has been suggested that the muckpile fragmentation values can be correctly determined by establishing correlations between the efficiency of the loader and muck pile fragmentation, since fragmentation is directly correlated with the former parameter. Subsequently, a correlation predicting the drilling speed of the drill machine was developed according to the discontinuity characteristics of the blasting surface and the rock strength. Finally, a correlation was developed predicting muckpile fragmentation according to the specific charge factor and the drilling speed of the drill machine The data was obtained by conducting blasting tests in two different limestone quarries.

Coal production in the United States in 2009 de-creased to 972.8 Mt (1,072.8 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This is a decline of 8.5 percent, or 90 Mt (99.1 million st) below the 2008 record level of 1.06 Gt (1,171.8 million st) (Table 1). In 2009, U.S. coal consumption decreased in all sectors while total coal stocks increased for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2009 was lower by 10 percent, while coking coal consumption decreased by 30.6 percent and the other industrial sector declined by 16.6 percent. The commercial and institutional sector (which prior to 2008 had been called ?residential and commercial?) is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors and it declined by 8.4 percent in 2009. (Note: all percentage change calculations are done at the short tons level.) U.S. coal exports fell from the 2008 levels, while coal imports decreased for a second year in a row. The decline in coal consumption during the year was the consequence of the domestic economic conditions combined with the weather in 2009, which resulted in lower demand for electricity. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. decreased in 2009. Coal-based generation also decreased, resulting in a 94-Mt (104-million st) drop in coal consumed in the electric power sector. Coal use in the non-electricity sector decreased by 20.1 percent to a level of 57.9 Mt (63.9 million st). The international coal markets for most of 2009 were reflective of a worldwide economic slowdown. U.S. coal exports and imports both declined for the year. U.S. coal exports totaled 53.6 Mt (59.1 million st). This is a decrease of 20.3 Mt (22.4 million st) from the 2008 level.

The microstrain characteristics of a polycrystal-line Cu 1.9 wt pet Be precipitation-hardening alloy have been determined for various conditions of aging. The friction stress remained constant for all the conditions investigated, whereas the microscopic yield stress (the stress to produce a plastic strain of 2 x 10-8 in. per in.) and the three-stage stress-strain curve in the microstrain region were sensitive to changes in dislocation and precipitate distribution. Correlations between the measurements of microplasticity and electron-nzicroscope observations of substructure are considered. ALTHOUGH the macroscopic mechanical properties of Cu 1.5 to 2.0 wt pet Be precipitation-harden ing alloys were established' in some detail, there has been no previous investigation of the nature of microyield-ing in these alloys. This paper describes a high-sensitivity extensometer determination of microplasticity in polycrystalline Cu 1.9 wt pet Be, in which the friction stress, the microscopic yield stress (the stress to produce a plastic strain of 2 x 10-6 in. per in.), and the rate of strain hardening in the micro-strain region were measured for various conditions of precipitation. The structural changes accompanying aging in this alloy were examined using transmission electron microscopy, a study which differed from previous investigations as, in order to minimize grain boundary precipitation effects,' the solution-treated alloy was cold-rolled to 40 pet reduction prior to aging. Hence the extent of recovery and recrystalliza-tion, as well as the variation of precipitate morphology and distribution, were assessed. From these results possible correlations between the microstrain characteristics and the observed precipitate and dislocation structure are considered. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material investigated was a commercial copper beryllium alloy (Berylco 25), which had a com- position of 1.9 wt pet Be and 0.2 wt pet Co. The alloy was solution-treated at 800°C, quenched in water, and then cold-rolled to 40 pct reduction. Tensile specimens of gage length 1 in. and rectangular cross section of 0.18 by 0.06 in. were prepared from the solution-treated, cold-rolled material and aged for 15 min, 2, 24, and 100 hr at 315°C and 24 hr at 425°C to produce a range of precipitate structure. The hardness values associated with these conditions are listed in Table I. It can be seen that a maximum value is obtained after 2 hr at 315oC, which decreases with continued time at temperature to a minimum after 24 hr at 425°C. For comparison some as-solution-treated specimens were also aged for 2 hr at 315°C. The specimens heat-treated to a given condition were examined in two ways. First, the nature and distribution of the precipitate and dislocation structure was characterized using transmission electron microscopy. Thin foils were obtained from the specimens by electrolytic polishing in a 30 pet nitric acid-alcohol solution at -20oC, and were examined in an RCA EMU 3 electron microscope. Second, the mi-croplastic behavior of the specimens was measured with a Tuckerman strain gage, using the load-unload technique previously described2, 3 to determine the friction stress, the microscopic yield stress, and the variation of plastic microstrain with stress. Prior to 1972, Peko Mines Limited at Tennant Creek used a central mill at Peko, which consisted of a gravity circuit, flotation and cyanidation of tailings, to treat their gold ore from surrounding mines. The Warrego concentrator, 60km to the west, was built to handle the Warrego and Gecko copper orebodies, which were being developed concurrently with the concentrator construction The Warrego concentrator consisted of a flotation circuit, using autogenous grinding at 100 - 120 tph, compared to the more elaborate Peko circuit employing rod mill - ball mill grinding capable of treating only 18 - 26 tph. During development of the Warrego copper mine a gold rich ore pod was located, because of which the mining plans were adjusted to allow simultaneous, separate extraction of the copper and gold ores. However, the plans for the concentrator were not affected as the gold ore could be carted 60km to the Peko central mill for processing.

At the end of the year 1914, the main North Star incline shaft had reached the 6300-ft. level, and encountered a vein dipping southwest, or exactly opposite to the North Star. Subsequent development failed to find the North Star vein continuing beyond this intersection, so the 6300-ft. level proved to be the bottom level of the North Star vein, and very little ore was found below the 5300-ft. level. The new vein was called No. 1 vein. Development work carried on for the next 10 years discovered a third vein, called No. 2, branching off about 1200-ft. to the east, with a north-south strike and a west dip. No. 1 vein had about 900 ft. of backs above the 6300-ft. level before reaching the boundary line of the property, and No. 2 vein died out about 800 ft. above. During these 10 years, the money spent on development was increased from $54,000 in 1914 to $184,000 in 1924; the ore reserves steadily diminished until it was evident that the mine must close down unless by some means a large tonnage of ore could be developed quickly. Problems and Plans In order to understand what follows, the general layout and equipment of the mine as it was at this time must be briefly described. Fig. 6 indicates the relative positions of the shafts. The North Star (incline) shaft extends from the surface to the 6300-ft. level following the vein, with an average pitch of 26", between limits of 11" to 38. There is at present no hoisting equipment in this shaft between the 2700 and 4000-ft. levels. The Central (vertical) shaft connects with the North Star shaft at the 4000-ft. level, at a vertical depth of 1600 ft. In two compartments of this shaft 4-ton skips made a vertical turn of 15 ft. radius at the 4000-ft. level and ran down the incline to the 6300-ft. level. A cage operated in the third compartment to the 4000-ft. level. Men and supplies were transferred to a truck running on a third track down the incline shaft to the 6300, operated by an electric hoist on the 4000-ft. station. When the shifts changed double-deck cages were substituted for the skips in the vertical shaft, but they stopped at the 4000-ft. station. The truck to 6300 carried 22 men, and it required 8 min. to make a trip down and back. This arrangement was satisfactory as long as a fairly large proportion of the work was

"BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF GRINDING CIRCUITCrushed ore at -5/ 16 in. is delivered by a conveyor system from the crushing plant to two 1250 ton fine ore bins. The ore is transferred from each bin by a 30 in. feeder conveyor belt, operated by a Link Belt P.I. V. (variable speed) drive, to a 24 in. conveyor that feeds the 8 x 10 Allis Chalmers rod mill.The rod mill discharges to a common mill discharge pump box. Three 6 x 6 SRL pumps are employed to pump the combined mill discharge pulp to a common distributor box which distributes the feed to two of the three Kreb D lSB cyclones in each of the two banks at a hydraulic pressure of 6 psi.The cyclone overflow at a specific gravity of 1. 25 (i.e. 32% solids) is transferred by gravity to two revolving chip screens for wood chip removal and from there to a pump box. Two 5 x 5 SRL pumps feed the pulp to the thickeners. The underflow from the cyclones is fed to two 8 x 8 Allis Chalmers ball mills which discharge to the common mill discharge pump box. Thus, a closed circuit is formed between the ball mills and their respective bank of cyclones. The circulating load as most recently calculated is 262%."

The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments on one synthetic and three natural sandstone samples to investigate the effects of acoustic energy on the flow of brine in porous media. Ultrasonic energy at a frequency of 20 kc per second and an intensity of 55 watts per cm2 was irradiated in the direction of the fluid flow and in the opposite direction for distances of 1/2 and 2 inches between the vibrating device and the sample face and under conditions of suppressed and nonsuppressed cavitation. Forty tests were conducted: 32 with a pressure differential of 0.64 psi across the samples, 2 with 5 psi, and 6 with 15 psi. Acoustic waves altered the rate of flow of the brine through the samples, but this effect was observed only at low differential pressures and from a practical point of view was insignificant. As a result of irradiation, however, the samples exhibited reduced permeability. This reduction was probably caused by the shifting of solid particles dislodged by the acoustic waves.

Four tables listing values for the various physical properties of those sulfur compounds most likely to occur in petroleum and petroleum products are given herein. The data necessary to bring the first compilation2/ in this subject up to date are given in table I -Revised and Additional Data, which includes boiling points, refractive indices, densities, and freezing points. Tables 11-, III, and IV are published for the first time and include refractive indices for the F, C, and G' lines of hydrogen and the helium D:3 line; surface tensions and viscosities, and refractivity intercepts, specific dispersions, specific refractions, and parachors. The need for information concerning the sulfur compounds in petroleum is becoming-more urgent because of the necessity of refining larger quantities of high-sulfur crude oil to meet the rising demand for petroleum products. For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been engaged in research to make available more information concerning the properties of the sulfur compounds in petroleum. The petroleum industry has recognized the value of such studies, and as a result the American Petroleum Institute has established Research Project 48A to study sulfur compounds. The investigations under this Project are to be done in Bureau of Mines laboratories as a cooperative project in connection with the work already started.

"The disposal of wastes is a serious environmental problem, since available landfill space is dwindling. Their treatment by pyrolysis or combustion has merit, and the corresponding fuel or power production is of technological interest. However, such processes need a rigid control of emissions. This work addresses the gaseous light hydrocarbons (LHCs) generated during sequential pyrolysis and partial oxidation of unserviceable tires, PET bottles, com wastes (DDGS) and sugarcane bagasse in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace, kept at 1000 °C. Gas chromatography was used to identify and quantify the components of the emitted gaseous light hydrocarbons. The results showed that the biomass residues generated the highest emissions of aliphatic hydrocarbons, whereas PET generated the most aromatic hydrocarbons. When stainless steel meshes were inserted in the exhaust flow, it was found that hydrocarbon emissions were curtailed; as such meshes catalyzed partial conversion of these carbon-bearing gases to carbonaceous nanomaterials.IntroductionLight hydrocarbons (LHCs) are volatile organic compounds, consisting of hydrogen and carbon with low molecular weight; the most common species are methane, ethane, propane, butane, etc. LHCs are valuable since they are a very important energy resource. However, uncontrolled release of light hydrocarbon gases to the atmosphere should be avoided [l, 2]. In this work, a development is presented for the evaluation of LHCs generated during the controlled pyrolysis/combustion of several wastes in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace. Samples of unserviceable tires, post-consumer PET bottles and waste residues from the bioethanol industry (DDGS and sugarcane bagasse) were burned. A catalyst system, consisting of stainless steel screens, was tested for its effects on the gaseous emissions."

The copper content in the waste slag represents the greatest loss in the process of Caraíba Metais' Smelter. By identifying the variables responsible for copper stabilization in the slag, a minimization on these losses is expected, producing a granulated waste slag with a copper content lower than 0.7%. Statistics resourses such as control charts, Pareto's diagram and correlations curves were applied for the data obtained in the first semester of 1992. The magnetite and the calcium oxide contents in the slag of the Flash Smelter Furnace were most prominent variables. Some operational changes introduced during and after this investigation have shown good results.

It parallels a previous report of the Bureau of Mines on slate roofing.Available Forms of Zinc RoofingZinc is available for roofing in three forms: 1. As sheet zinc which may be used advantageously on roofs with as flat a pitch as 1 in 4; laid with standing seam construction for small roofs and with batten construction for large roofs. 2. As corrugate sheets, in widths up to 40 inches and in lengths up to 8 and feet, available for siding and roofing in industrial buildings (with certain re¬strict ions) and or farm buildings (without restrictions). 3. In the form of shingles.Advantages of Zinc Roofing1. Zinc is a permeant roofing material; that is, when suited to the conditions, and properly applied to a roof designed with the right purlin spacing it will outlast the building and still have a salvage value equal to a least half the original material cost. It is applicable to a wide range of conditions, from the most expensive to the cheapest type of construction, and is not greatly above the cheaper materials in first cost. A permanent roof of simple outline need not cost over $15 to $25 per square (100 square feet), depending upon the method of construction required a corrugated sheet roof for industrial purposes or for farm use need not cost over $15 per square for ordinary conditions. 3. Corrugated zinc sheets have the distinct advantage of being available for re-use and re-construction if handled with ordinary care. 4. Zinc oxidizes to a certain point, building up a strong protective coating which in time effectually checks further oxidation; thus it does not oxidize to the point of destruction as steel does, 5. The environmental sustainability is linked back to human sustainability; the sustainability development comprises the environment, society, and economics. This study mainly focused on mining sustainability and its impact on the environment of Pakistan. For measuring the level and environmental mining sustainability nature to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the world’s second largest salt mine “Khewra,” Folchi and Phillips environmental sustainability mathematics (PESM) models are applied. The results indicated that Khewra was deemed to be potentially sustainable for the environment and quality of salt. The results suggest the delicate balance of maintaining sustainability successfully, regarding the mining process in Pakistan which has been affecting the local environment and community so badly. This report describes the preliminary results of a Bureau program to develop and test an inexpensive grout for full-column support of roof bolts. Various inorganic grouts were tested in both cartridge and slurry form. Tests were also performed on methods of water packaging and on the effect of fillers on the grout strength. Results showed that some grouts had poor early strength and exceptional mid-to long-term strength. Laboratory tests have shown that rapid-setting inorganic grout could be an economical replacement for resin bolts if the short-term strength could be increased. Further development to improve its early strength would need to be tested in the laboratory and underground to prove its potential for the mining industry.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the changes that occur in decomposition products when coal is carbonized in a fluidized bed with steam as the fluidizing medium and the vapors are subsequently cracked without condensation in a fluidized bed of high-temperature coke. The coal used was from the High Splint bed, High Splint mine, Harlan County, Ky. Since this coal is agglomerating, it was blended with char. The integrated unit used in this investigation consisted of a 3-inch-diameter fluidized coal carbonizer, a 3.5-inch-diameter cracker containing a bed of high-temperature coke fluidized by the tar vapors and steam from the carbonizer, and gas-cleaning and product-recovery systems. The carbonizer was operated at 485° C and the cracker at 600°, 700°, and 800° C. The process variables investigated were temperature, residence time, and concentration (pound of tar vapors per pound of steam to the cracker) of tar vapors in the cracker. The total tar yields decreased as the temperature of the cracker increased, and at a constant cracker temperature of 600° C the yield of paraffins, acids, aromatics, and olefins in the distillate increased directly with the tar vapor concentration in the cracker. At 700° and 800° C only the acids and aromatics increased with increased concentration. Bases remained essentially constant regardless of the temperature and concentration. Similar results were obtained when the tar from the carbonizer was condensed prior to feeding to the cracker.
