A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach involves numerical modelling that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through a rock mass. A DFN is a 3D realisation of the ‘smaller scale’, non-deterministic defects; it is not an attempt to model larger, deterministic structures that should be identified as part of an engineering geology model. The approach utilises structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models that provides a tool for visualisation and analysis of a rock mass and indicates the potential large-scale slope or tunnel performance and stability.Stochastic fracture modelling for rock mass characterisation has significantly advanced over the past 25 years. With recent improvements to field data collection and computational power, it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses.This paper provides an introduction to the DFN approach, particularly the necessary input parameters and derivation of these from typical structural data sources, such as boreholes or scan line mapping. Of particular importance for engineering applications is validation of the simulated fracture network and techniques for doing so are discussed here.CITATION:Weir, F M and Fowler, M, 2014. In order for mines to operate profitably throughout their life it is important to monitor and maximise ore recovery. A common problem facing many mines is the underestimation of clay type and its distribution in ore at the mine face, blast hole or in the ore stockpile. Too much clay entering the heap leach ore stream for example causes a dramatic reduction in heap leach efficacy and or increased leaching times. The end result is poor leaching performance and much reduced metal production. Poor clay identification and quantification is attributable to many factors, including costly and slow off-site mineral analysis techniques, such as XRD, XRF and petrology, the visual and subjective limitations of the core logging geologist and a lack of suitable low cost, high throughput mineral logging instruments. To get round these problems a new, non-contact, imaging spectrometer - the SpecCam - was developed by Spectra-Map Ltd, to allow high throughput identification and quantification of minerals from mineable material. Its novel imaging design can collect millions of data points (pixels) per day; each pixel contains spectral information that allows a wide variety of mineral types, including the smectite and illite clays, and phyllosilicates such as talc and kaolin, to be identified. Because all the ore can be imaged a much more reliable mineral log can be made. Hence, mapping changes in mineral composition - related to variations in phenocrysts, macrocrysts, veining or wall rock - is possible. Examples of SpecCam data from Goldfields Cerro Corona Porphyry stockpile and from Rio Tinto?s Argyle Diamond mine illustrate the mineral identification and quantification capabilities of the SpecCam. More importantly, for the first time very accurate % abundances for the different minerals can be obtained using an image-based modal count technique. The modular design of the camera, plus its extremely flexible high speed filter, mean that the SpecCam can be easily installed on different equipment, each one suited to different ore recovery problems. For example the SpecCam can be used on an automated portable logging frame to measure drill core, RC chips, hand samples or powder, or alternatively installed on a Geotek multi-sensor core logger for high-throughput, automated logging of drill or blast hole core using co-registered multi-sensor data. An exciting recent development has been the installation of the SpecCam on CommoDas ore sorting equipment, used around the world for 24 hour mill-feed monitoring and automatic ore sorting. Real-time ore sorting decisions can be made as material is monitored on a conveyor belt running at 3m s-1, from which the ore can be automatically sorted into high-grade, low-grade or waste streams for example. The three installation options for the SpecCam mean that most mineral analysis and automated core logging or ore monitoring needs can be met at the mine. For the first time rapid and automatic mineral identification and accurate quantification can be made. All of which allow the mine geologist or metallurgist to make important decisions about maximising the metal recovery process.

Mining costs are governed by the relative efficiency of the mining method employed. The method is selected for Its adaptability to the local natural physical conditions such as the nature and thickness of the coal bed, its dip, the character of the coal, and the thickness of the overlying strata.

"The agglomerating index of coal is an index based upon the nature of the coke residue left when the standard volatile-matter determination of the well-known proximate analysis is made. In this determination a small amount of coal is heated in a container to about 950° C. (1,742° F.), at which temperature the volatile matter is driven off, leaving a coke formation. The coke residues for various coals are quite different in physical structure: and, for some time past, work has been done on studies of the nature of these residues in connection with the coking of coal. In 1934 Gilmore, Connell, and Nicolls proposed use of the agglomerating index for indicating the dividing line between noncaking coals and those having weakly caking properties. 4/ Its use was adopted in the standard classification of coals by rank as a requisite physical property index to differentiate semianthracite from low-volatile bituminous coal and also high-volatile ""C"" bituminous from subbituminous ""A"" coal, as shown in table 1, the standard coal classification adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association. 5./In studying the agglomerating properties of coals based on the coke residue the Bureau of Mines has adopted the notation given in table 2. Coals that in the volatile-matter determination give a coke residue either in the form of an agglomerate button that will support a 500-gram weight without pulverizing or a button that shows swelling or cell structure are considered to be agglomerating."

O objetivo deste trabalho foi de analisar a influência da variação de manganês e cromo na resistência ao desgaste abrasivode aços austeníticos ao manganês aplicados em britadores de minério e verificar mecanismos de encruamento. Este material possui grande importânciatanto para o setor de mineração quantopara a economia do país. Para tanto, produziram-se ligascom teor de manganês (Mn) variando entre 12 e 21%, contendo cromo (Cr) entre 0,31 a 2,06 %. A resistência ao desgaste foi determinada através da realização de ensaios de micro-abrasão por esfera fixa. Para a análise dos mecanismos de encruamento, realizaram-se ensaios de impacto por martelamento seguido de metalografia ótica e perfil de dureza. Os resultados evidenciaram que o aço com percentual mais elevado de manganês com adição de cromo possui maior resistência ao desgaste abrasivo. Observou-se que o mecanismo atuante no encruamento dessas ligas é maclação de deformação, podendo elevar a dureza destes aços em valores quatro vezes maiores que sua dureza inicial. Conclui-se que o teor de Mn e Cr presente nesses aços influenciam na resistência ao desgaste abrasivo, sendo o Mn de maior influência.

In the spring of 1943, when it was evident that the Tensleep sandstone in the Elk Basin field, Wyoming and Montana, held a large reserve of petroleum, Bureau of Mines engineers obtained samples of oil from the bottom of nine wells and analyzed them for such physical characteristics as the volumes of gas in solution, saturation pressures or bubble points, shrinkage in volume caused by the release of gas from solution, expansion of the oil with decrease in pressure, and other related properties. The composition of the gas in solution in the oil was studied. The pressures and temperatures existing in the reservoir and the productivity characteristics of the oil wells were determined. The data obtained indicate that the oil in the Tensleep reservoir of the Elk Basin field has unusually varying physical characteristics, such as a saturation pressure of 1,250 pounds per square inch absolute and 490 cubic feet of gas in solution in a barrel of oil at the crest of the structure, and a saturation pressure of 530 pounds per square inch absolute and 134 cubic feet of gas in solution in a barrel of oil low on the flanks. The hydrogen sulfide content of the 6a r; in solution in the oil varies from 18 percent for oil on the crest to 5 percent for oil low on the flanks of the structure. Of even greater significance is the fact that these and other variable characteristics of the reservoir oil are related to the position of oil in the structure. Many geologists and petroleum engineers have considered all the oil in a petroleum reservoir to have uniform physical characteristics and that equilibrium conditions prevailed in all underground accumulations of oil and gas. That such is not always so is borne out by the results of the study made by the writers.

"A pneumoconiosis is best defined as the accumulation of dust in the lungs and the tissue's reaction to iu presence. Thus, silicosis is the name given to the fibrotic disease of the lungs caused by inhalation of dust containing silicon dioxide, primarily in the free crystalline form. Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), which was originally thought to be a variant of silicosis, results from inhalation of coal mine dust that usually contains relatively small amounts of free crystalline silica.HISTORYSilicosis is the older and more well known of these mineral pneumoconiosis. In contrast, CWP was not recognized as different from silicosis until the pivotal work of Collis and Gilchrist. 26 They noted that coal trimmers, i.e., special stevedores who leveled coal in the holds of ships at the Cardiff and Swansea docks in Wales, developed identical nodules on the chest radiograph to those of underground miners. The difference was that these men had never worked underground and that the coal was washed before it was loaded into ships; thus, it was unlikely that these men were exposed to silica. Gough54 examined the lungs of coal trimmers who died and found that the histologic appearance of the pulmonary lesions was distinctly different from the whorled nodules seen in silicosis. Gough,"" and subsequently Heppleston,"" then showed that the lung lesions in coal trimmers were similar to those in underground coal miners and different from those of classical silicosis. Nagelschmidt 78 analyzed the mineral content of miners' lungs that became available at autopsy. These studies caused him to propose a scheme in which the relative proportions of silica, other minerals, and/or coal deposited in the lungs determined the type of pulmonary response which develops, i.e., classical silicosis, mixed-dust disease, or CWP."

Autogenous grinding in Turkey was first applied to quartzite where the mill is grate discharge type with an internal diameter of 2.99 m, having a length of 3.20 m and a capacity of as to 11.0 tons per hour. The second autogenous grinding was applied to a copper ore at Murgul Cakmakkaya Flotation plant of (KBI) Black Sea Copper Works having three mills 26 feet in diameter and 10 feet in length in close circuit with hydrocyclones. Recently, alterations were made in grinding circust by adding pebble mills. Furthermore, rubber liners and lifter bars were introduced pebble extractor and classifier were new features in the primary mills and circulating load was reduced by 20-50 tons per hour. At the end of these charges, capacity of each mill line was increased to 48 tons per hour with a full capacity of more than 9000 tons per day. Thirdly, autogenous grinding has been executed successfully on the slags of Samsun Smelting Plant of (KBI) Black Sea Copper Works with a mill of 20 feet in diameter and 6 feet on length having pebble mill following autogenous grinding.

Nanopartículas magnéticas são amplamente empregadas em diversas áreas devido as suas propriedades superparamagnéticas, e vem sendo estudadas por todo o mundo com potencial em campos como biomedicina e tratamento de efluentes. Nesse experimento as propriedades de ferritas mistas de manganês e zinco foram testadas e avaliadas com base na sua concentração de zinco em cada composto, usando como fator de comparação suas velocidades médias de arraste em um tanque de ondas graduado na presença de um campo magnético externo. O processo procura viabilizar um método de análise que sugira possível coerência com resultados observados em outro método de caracterização magnética, a magnetometria por amostra vibrante. Tais resultados apresentaram maior magnetização de saturação para as amostras de Mn0,5Zn0,5Fe2O4 assim como foi observado maior velocidade de arraste nas amostras de mesma estequiometria.

"Fracture mechanics plays an important role in studies of geologic materials such as rock and coal. Yet fracture data are scarce for rock and most limited or unreliable for coal. A testing system was developed which can apply mixed mode loads to a crack tip in many rocks and geologic materials. It is possible to subject the test specimen to pure mode I, various mixed modes and a nearly pure mode II fracture load. The system is currently used to study the mechanics of fine fragment formation in various coals. Experimental measurements include KI and KII' fracture velocity and acoustic emission.INTRODUCTIONA major research program at The Pennsylvania State University is directed to understanding the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in various coals. The program represents an effort to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung) in coal miners. The principal source of the respirable coal fragments is the cutting operation which forms and liberates the particles by a fracture process. Present understanding of the mechanics of the events which form and liberate these particles is meager (Cook, 1982).Current knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust generation and entrainment in terms of the underlying fracture mechanics is critically needed to improve and possibly control the processes involved. Whether the cutting operation is done with a 'continuous miner' cutting machine, a plow or a longwall shearer, it is fundamentally a problem of mixed-mode crack propagation. When a cutting tool interacts with coal, it causes numerous cracks to propagate through the intact material. Numerous larger fragments are broken free, but another quantity of undesirable fine fragments is also created. The formation of these respirable fragments may be a direct result of the crack propagation process; hence, a thorough understanding of the fracture mechanics of coal is required to minimize production of the unwanted fine fragments.In most rock engineering applications, the rock material properties are of secondary importance to the rock mass properties; however, for rock fragmentation and rock cutting problems, it is rock material properties such as fracture toughness which are of prime interest (Bieniawski, 1980). Several rock cutting and rock failure theories have been proposed, but it is only very recently that fracture mechanics concepts have been successfully applied to the study of rock cutting mechanics. All cutting models seek to predict the cutting forces and the cutter geometry necessary to cause rock breakage and chip formation given some fundamental mechanical properties ~f the rock. Such models have wide applications in drilling, tunnel boring and mining problems. Nelson et al., (1985, 1986) has provided a very useful correlation between the laboratory measured fracture mechanics properties of rock and the performance of the disk cutters on tunnel boring machines."

This is the sixth report of investigations in cooperation with the steel industry to establish the technological acceptability of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking processes. The bulk of the .electrolytic manganese used in these tests was produced by the Bureau Of Mines from domestic ores at its Boulder City, Nev., pilot plant by the process developed by the Bureau. Electrolytic manganese for the first series of tests made in 1940 was supplied by the Electro manganese Corp., Knoxville, Tenn. The first report dealt with the application of electrolytic manganese to the manufacture of stainless.steel;9 the second with tests in acid electric and acid open-hearth low and medium carbon-steel castings; the third with its use in rimmed and? killed low-carbon steels; the fourth with its application to the manufacture of stainless steel as well as the Timken 16-25-6 alloy for gas turbines; and the fifth with tests in acid and basic electric steel foundry practice and basic steel ingot production.

8.5-1. Bucket Line Dredge. INTRODUCTION. The modern bucket-line dredge for mining placer deposits is a combined floating excavating machine and a gravity concentration system. Material is excavated at the forward end by the buckets, elevated, washed and screened, concentrated for recovery of valuable mineral, and discharged off the stern as coarse and small fractions. The end product is a concentrate consisting either of the valuable mineral(s) and associated heavy minerals, which are taken to a treatment plant on shore; or in the case of gold, a clean amalgam ready for retorting. The bucket-line dredge may be adapted for purposes other than mining for valuable mineral by installing, in lieu of a concentrating system, machinery for pumping all of the solids ashore in a pulp, or for producing washed gravel in selected size fractions of which all or a selected fraction is pumped to disposal areas on shore or into side barges. The two principal types of bucket-line dredges designed for mining are: 1) those having an inclined belt conveyor stacker to discharge the coarse fraction of washed tailing well astern of the hull, and sluices to discharge the sand fraction (Fig. 8.5-1), and 2) those having only sluices for discharge of all tailing astern. Use of the latter type has been confined, with few exceptions, to mining cassiterite-bearing deposits in Malaysia and at sea off Indonesia. Small dredges having only flumes for washing and concentrating all material dug by the buckets have been used for mining shallow stream valley deposits. GENERAL ARRANGEMENT. The general arrangement of a modern bucket-line dredge for mining tin, with a primary concentrating plant on board, is shown in Fig. 8.5-2. The hull and superstructure of most dredges are fabricated of structural steel; wood also has been used for both small and large dredges with complete satisfaction. The paper sets out the strategic importance of South Africa?s mining and minerals sector to the national economy. It relates how inexorable and accelerating urbanization and industrialization in emerging markets, especially in China and India, will translate into sustained demand for the minerals that South and southern Africa have in abundance. It warns that while countries buying raw materials from South Africa use these inputs as the basis on which to build value-added, employment-creating industries, South Africa is failing to exploit the economic benefits inherent in its mineral wealth, exacerbating its shortage of skills.

No início de Março/2015 começaram a ser notados eventos de oxidação em bobinas armazenadas no pátio de expedição, e naquela época o fenômeno foi creditado às chuvas. Entretanto, passado o período chuvoso, ainda foram notados eventos de oxidação, que ocorriam também em produtos destinados à exportação. Isto mostrou que havia outra causa atuando no problema, e que era necessário descobri-la e tomar ações para sanar o problema. O produto final é a coroação do esforço produtivo anterior à sua obtenção, e leva consigo o nome do fabricante para onde for enviado. Por isto ele não pode ter falhas. A ArcelorMittal Tubarão montou um grupo de trabalho, que atuou em várias frentes, incluindo o condicionamento químico do sistema de resfriamento direto da laminação. Este grupo de trabalho obteve êxito na tarefa e as conclusões obtidas estão mostradas aqui.

Questões como a variação no preço dos minérios, a escassez dos minérios de qualidade e a preocupação contínua com a sustentabilidade faz com que a indústria busque matérias-primas alternativas, o que estimula o uso dos resíduos. Dentro da siderurgia, muitos resíduos gerados possuem elevados teores de metais, logo podem retornar ao ciclo produtivo após passar por tratamentos adequados, acarretando, assim, em economia ao processo. A carepa é um resíduo composto de mais de 60% de ferro. Devido à esta característica já é parcialmente reaproveitada pela siderurgia, porém a presença eventual de óleos em sua composição ainda faz com que parte desse resíduo seja destinada a aterros industriais. A carepa também pode ser empregada como matéria-prima em outros processos industriais. Assim, o intuito deste trabalho é apresentar rotas de reaproveitamento da carepa siderúrgica.

This paper summarizes the results of a research project whose goal was to provide the Australian coal industry with a longwall installation roadway (faceroad) design methodology that could be utilized by suitably qualified colliery personnel. This goal was achieved in 2012 and the design methodology (and software package) is referred to as Analysis and Design of Faceroad Roof Support (ADFRS). The intended benefits to underground operations, in the provision of this information and resource, are a safer and more productive workplace.
