El presente texto señala el resultado de algunas pruebas realizadas en el período de 1974 y 1979 en la concentradora de Toquepala, a fin de mejorar el proceso de producción en la industria minera. Para ello, se ejecutaron 14 pruebas a nivel de planta, de donde se seleccionaron seis, las cuales se ejecutaron también a nivel de laboratorio para así compararlas con lo standard. Las seis pruebas referidas son: Evaluación de forros de jebe en molienda, evaluación de diferentes tamaños de bolas, evaluación del espumante Celaproht-16, efectos de Asmol Polhalla m- 59 en sedimentación y filtrado de las colas de planta de Molibdenita, evaluación del espumante Ucon R-23 y lonas tampereen en el filtrado,

THE CARBONIZING properties of Chilton-bed coal from Lorado No. 5 mine, HE Logan County, W. Va., were determined by Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association tests at 600°, 700°, 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C. and by expansion tests. Chemical analyses, agglutinating and plasticity tests, and low- and high-temperature assays also were included in the investigation. Blends with low-volatile Pocahontas No. 3 coal were carbonized at. 900° C. The Chilton coal bed lies in the Kanawha, or Upper Pottsville formation of the Pennsylvanian system; the estimated original reserves are nearly 3.2 billion tons. The bed was 39/1 to 57 inches thick in the Lorado No. 5 mine, and the coal was 38 to 57 inches thick. The carbonization sample contained 62.6 percent fixed carbon on the dry, mineral-matter-free, basis, and the heating value on the moist, mineral-matter-free basis was 15,190 B. t. u. per pound; it therefore ranks as high-volatile A bituminous. It contained 1.8 percent moisture, 35.2 percent volatile matter, 57.9 percent fixed carbon, 5.1 percent ash, and 0.7 percent sulfur, as carbonized. The sulfur was largely organic, and the ash softened at 2,630° F. The agglutinating value determined on a silicon carbide-coal mixture of 15:1 was 6.8. In the Gieseler test the coal softened at 327° C., fused at 407° C., attained a maximum fluidity of 5,730 dial divisions per minute at 435° C., and solidified at 487° C. Maximum resistance in the Davis plastometer was 45.5 pound-inches.

A survey of existing and developing field permeability test methods was conducted in order to identify and specify capable methods to be used in feasibility investigations or performance monitoring for in situ leaching of ore deposits. Geologic settings of leachable deposits are discussed, as well as representative techniques used for the in situ leaching operation. Subsurface investigation techniques including drilling, core recovery, and down-hole inspection methods relevant to field permeability investigations are discussed. Field experience is examined and capable field permeability test methods are identified. Specifications for test borehole preparation, test performance. and methods of analysis are given. The test methods are comparatively rated in a matrix with respect to costs ease of use, and data effectiveness' for a broad range of conditions. Well Pump and Packer test methods receive high ratings. Recommendations are made for needed developments in field permeability test methods and a comprehensive bibliography is given.

INTRODUCTION The Bullmoose Coal Project is part of a major development in northeastern British Columbia which comprises a new rail line, a new townsite, powerline, highway, the upgrading of the Canadian National Railway's main line, a new coal port at Prince Rupert and two new coal mines, the Bullmoose mine and the Quintette mine. The total investment by all parties is estimated to be in excess of $2.6 billion and made up approximately as follows : [Table No. 1 $ Millions - Quintette Coal Limited 950 Teck-Bullmoose Coal Inc. 275 Canadian National Railway Company 800 6 British Columbia Railway Company Port at Prince Rupert 280 Townsite, Roads 6- Power ] The new infrastructure is intended to serve not only the Bullmoose and Quintette coal projects but also eventually a number of other coal properties in northeastern British Columbia. The Bullmoose project is structured on a joint venture basis as follows : [Table No. 2 Teck Corporation 51% Lornex Mining Corporation Ltd. 39% Nissho Iwai Coal Development 1 0% (Canada) Ltd. -- 100% ] The mine has a capacity of 2.3 million tonnes of clean coal per year. In the initial years 1.7 million tonnes will be metallurgical coal and 0.6 million tonnes thermal coal. After the first three years of operations the annual production of metallurgical coal will increase to an average of approximately 2.1 million tonnes and the production of thermal coal will decrease to an average of approximately 0.2 million tonnes. At this level of 2.3 million tonnes annual production, the Bullmoose mine has sufficient reserves for at least 26 years of production. History Brameda Resources Ltd. commenced coal exploration in the Bullmoose-Sukunka area in 1969. Teck obtained an option on the Bullmoose coal licences in 1970 and started surface exploration and diamond drilling in 1971. Teck earned a 50% interest in the property, and thereafter expenses were jointly financed by Teck and Brameda. In 1981 Brameda merged with Teck making Teck the sole owner. The initial phase of the exploration program, which was completed in 1975, included 7,200 meters of diamond drilling in 35 holes. During 1976 and 1977, detailed exploration and test work were carried out on the South Fork and West Fork areas where multiple seams close to surfaces indicated the potential for large tonnages of strippable coal. In those two years, work included road construction, detailed mapping and trenching to outline the coal seam traces at the surface, 6,300 meters of diamond drilling in 80 holes, and 300 meters of underground bulk sampling from seven adits. Washability tests and analysis work were carried out on the drill cores and adit samples, and pilot plant washability studies were undertaken. In 1978 and 1979 Teck engineers prepared open pit mining plans and production schedules and Kaiser Engineering was retained to prepare a layout of the plant preparation facility. A feasibility study prepared by Teck's engineering group in January 1982 was the base document used by the Lenders in assessing the technical and economic viability of the project. Property Location The property lies some 650 kilometers northeast of Vancouver, and 87 kilometers south by road from the village of Chetwynd. The Sukunka property (British Petroleum) adjoins to the north, the Mount Spieker property (Ranger Oil Option) adjoins to the east, and the Quintette property is located to the southeast.

The following account of wining practices of the Kirkland Late Gold twining Co., (Ltd.), at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, is one of 4 series of papers being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, sad costs in various districts. The author has prepared this paper with the help and permission of J. B. Tyrrell and W. M. Sixt, the managing director and the mine manager, respectively. This mine is operating at a daily rate of about 150 tons.

Among the methods of mineral processing, gravity concentration methods are, probably, those which have lower costs, higher capacities and lower operational complexity. In order to be really effective, these methods require a feed size distribution in which the particles are liberated. Further, there must be a significant difference (usually higher than 1-1.5) among the real densities of the particles. However, in most cases, the traditional gravity concentrators (jigs, shaking tables, spirals and dense medium hydrocyclones) lose efficiency (sharpness of cut and recovery) when the mean diameter of particles are lower than 0.05mm and the difference among densities are smaller than 1. Most gravity concentrators developed in the last 20 years are based on the use of centrifugal forces that create large "apparent gravitational gradient" seeking to overcome the limitations of particles size distribution. This paper presents the experience of the CVRD Research Center in evaluation and development of new process based on using this new generation of gravity concentrators.

Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) was used to study adsorption of sulfide collectors such as modified thionocarbamates and thioureas, xanthate, dithiophosphate, and dithiophosphinate, on galena, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, and quartz under flotation related conditions. In the case of the adsorption of modified thiourea on chalcopyrite, chalcocite and Cu-activated quartz, and of dithiophosphinate on galena, SIMS measurements have provided direct evidence for the presence of metal-collector (1:1) complexes on surfaces. In the other systems, only the collector molecular ion and its fragments were detected. The distribution of adsorbed species on the surfaces was obtained by using SIMS in the imaging mode. On chalcopyrite, only the copper-collector complex was found; there was no evidence for iron-collector complex. In the case of quartz, adsorption of selective collectors was observed only after activation by copper ions.

Os fabricantes de instrumentos endodônticos de NiTi têm desenvolvido diferentes estratégias para aumentar a resistência à fadiga e à ruptura torcional desses instrumentos. A tecnologia “Controlled Memory (CM)”, que envolve o emprego de tratamentos térmicos em instrumentos já usinados, é uma dessas novas estratégias. Neste trabalho, dois tipos de instrumentos CM foram avaliados em termos de sua capacidade de recuperação de forma e resistência à fadiga após ciclos de flexão até 45 graus e esterilização em autoclave, simulando o uso clínico. Os resultados obtidos em relação às temperaturas de transformação martensítica e reversa, ao momento de dobramento a 45 graus, à recuperação de forma e à resistência à fadiga após ciclos de flexão/esterilização mostraram que os tratamentos aplicados aos dois tipos de instrumentos, embora referenciados como tecnologia CM, produziram resultados diferentes em termos de microestrutura e propriedades.

A new porphyry copper gold district has been discovered at Goonumbla near Parkes in central New South Wales. Endeavour 26 North is the largest deposit known to date with a possible resource of 166.4 million tonnes at 0.74% copper, 0.12g/tonne gold and 1.7g/tonne silver, using a cut-off grade 0.3% copper. Mineralisation is primarily bornite in the higher grade zones and chalcopyrite in the peripheral lower grade zones. Most of the copper, gold mineralisation is associated with potassic alteration. Two mineralised quartz monzonite porphyry intrusive stages have been identified and these are related at depth to a large monz- onite stock which may have been the source of some of the mineralisation. On the basis of detailed paragenesis studies, the potassic zone can be divided into three symmetric subzones. The low grade inner potassium feldspar subzone is confined to the later intrusive porphyry. The outer potassium feldspar subzone is the most highly mineralised alteration halo due to the focussed superimposition of two hydrothermal cycles which have overprinted intrusive and volcanic rocks. The fringing biotite potassium feldspar subzone reveals alteration minerals which are developed early in the paragenesis. Fracture controlled quartz sericite alteration with low sulphide content, fringes and, in part overprints the potassic zone. The restricted pipe-like nature of the alteration zones and related mineralisation suggests that Endeavour 26 North is repres- entative of a multiphase focussed porphyry copper gold system.

I have read with particular interest that portion of the discussion by Anton Eilers referring to the high-lime (and also high-alumina) slags made by August Raht in 1881, while smelting the Horn Silver ores at Franklin, Utah. The two analyses of such slags, furnished by Mr. Raht to Mr. Eilers are: (a) Not determined in this analysis. (b) Not given in Mr. Eilers' paper. Oxygen ratio, A1 as base. Pile load testing can be performed by a static, rapid or high strain dynamic (generally designated as dynamic) testing method. The static load test is often considered the “gold standard” of testing with the other methods merely ‘alternatives’. However, the rapid load test, as a quasi-static test, has all the positive elements of the static alternative: the direct measurement of loads and displacements. Moreover as stress wave phenomena have no influence, the interpretation of rapid load test results is more straightforward than that of dynamic testing, and also independent of the person performing the interpretation. This paper will explore the Rapid Load Testing method and illustrate the advantages and limitations through a case study in Rostock, Germany

For more than 35 years Lurgi has been providing its fluid bed roasters on a world­wide basis. The current total annual capaci­ty of the 250 Lurgi roasters approaches 26 million mt of sulphide minerals, including gold-bearing flotation pyrite concentrates. While the stationary fluid bed has been uti­lized for roasting exclusively, Lurgi has now commercially introduced its Circulating Fluid Bed (CFB) technology for gold roasting in a successful effort to maximize gold re­covery.

Borehole Mining (BHM) is a remotely operated underground and underwater method of extracting (mining) mineral resources by high-pressure water jets. It can be carried-out from the land surface, open pit floor, underground mine and floating platform or vessel. The method is currently in use in mining and exploration of such natural resources and industrial materials as: uranium, iron ore, quartz sand, gravel, coal, poly-metallic ores, phosphate, gold, diamonds, rare earths, amber and several more. Yet another application of Borehole mining technology is construction of subsurface collectors, ground walls and storage for compressed or liquefied gases, oil and other products.

Longwall mine instrumentation for measuring abutment stress distribution, mining induced immediate roof stress change and deformation, and primary/secondary support loads and deformations provides critical guidance for the design of gateroad chain pillars and roof support. Field measurement results are also recognized as the best way to calibrate numerical models that have been used to study the failure and support mechanisms. International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) started in 1981 and since then, there were 26 papers published in the proceedings discussing the stress and load measurements as the face advanced using various field instrumentation techniques. The focus of this paper is on summarizing the analyses of the data published in these papers. Stress/load change monitoring included the following categories: gateroad chain pillar, abutment pressure, bolt load, and pre-driven recovery room. The data shows that the magnitude of stress changes as the face advances varies considerably from panel to panel and mine to mine. However, regardless of types of stress changes, pillar stress, abutment pressure, and bolt load, there exists a rough trend of stress increase as the face advances, generally consisting of three stages, i.e., stress/load (1) initially increases steady or slowly, (2) increases rapidly, and (3) increases reaching the peaks and dropping down slowly or sharply. The stress/load increases start earlier during the second panel mining and are larger than the first panel mining. This review makes it easy for the interested persons to find valuable data for other similar projects.

Phase diagrams for the Ti-W and Ti-Ta systems were determined. The Ti-W system is characterized by a wide, two-phase region of ß plus tungsten which is derived from a peritectic reaction between the liquid and tungsten solid solutions. The ß field terminates in a eutectoid reaction between a titanium and tungsten terminal solid solution. Tantalum and ß titanium form a complete series of solid solutions. Other features of this system are the extensive a-ß field at low temperatures and an appreciable solubility of tantalum in a titanium. BOTH tungsten and tantalum were first thought to form ß-isomorphous systems with titanium as a result of early work' using powder-metallurgical techniques. Later work2 on arc-melted Ti-Ta alloys, made using a commercial titanium base, showed that, in the range of 0 to 10 pct, tantalum was soluble in ß titanium and that the a solubility extended to between 2 and 5 pct Ta at 790 °C. The present investigation covered the entire alloy range in both systems and was chiefly concerned with high-purity alloys at the titanium-rich end. The constitution of titanium-rich alloys made with a commercial titanium base was reported by Holla-day, Kura, and Jackson.3, 4 As will be shown in detail later, the early prediction of a isomorphism was true for the case of the Ti-Ta system, but not for the Ti-W system. The results of this investigation will be presented first. The experimental methods used are described in the Appendix. Ti-W System The entire Ti-W phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. Details of the titanium-rich side are shown in Fig. 2. The chief features of the system are a ß eutectoid and a high-temperature peritectic between liquid and tungsten solid solution. Melting Range: Examination of cast structures of low and medium-tungsten-content ingots showed cored ß phase as the primary constituent. Fig. 3a illustrates a typical cast structure for alloys in the range of 20 to 30 pct W. From 30 to 72 pct W, coring was very severe. Alloys containing 72 through 88 pct W, however, showed definite evidence of a peritectic reaction between the liquid and a terminal solid solution of titanium in tungsten. Fig. 3b shows the cast structure for an 80 pct W alloy. A 95 pct W alloy, shown in Fig. 4, consisted primarily of primary tungsten solid solution plus a small quantity of ß probably rejected during cooling. Incipient-melting experiments located the peritectic temperature between 1850" and 1900°C and indicated that the reacting phases are liquid containing about 25 pct W and tungsten terminal solid solution containing about 8 pct Ti. "INTRODUCTIONPlatelet-activating factor (P AF) has been shown to mediate a broad range of biologic activities (1). Chemical analysis has shown that PAF is a glycerophospholipid with a choline polar head group, an ester-linked acyl chain at the second carbon of the glycerol backbone, and an ether linkage at the first carbon. The alkyl group attached to the first carbon can exist in a variety of chain lengths, with the C16 and C18 forms predominant in humans. The structure of P AF has been identified as 1-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphorylcholine (2,3).PAF can be released from a variety of cell types, such as basophils, neutrophils, and alveolar macrophages ( 4-6). Stimuli for the release of P AF include calcium ionophore, phorbol esters, chemotactic agents, and zymosan. In addition, endotoxin has been shown to be a potent stimulant of P AF release from alveolar macrophages (7).P AF has been shown to have a number of pulmonary effects. It has been associated with asthma since it can cause contraction of pulmonary tissue (8) and leukotriene secretion from leukocytes (9) and induce airway constriction when inhaled by humans (10). In addition, PAF is a potent chemoattractant and can cause migration ofneutrophils into the airspaces of the lungs (11,12). Endotoxin is a lipopolysaccharide-protein complex derived from the cell walls of gram-negative bacteria. I.PS is the lipopolysaccharide portion of endotoxin. LPS contains four covalently joined subunits: lipid A, 3-deoxyoctonate, a core polysaccharide moiety, and an 0-specific antigenic polysaccharide side chain. Rough LPS contains no 0-antigen side chain. The liP.id A portion of LPS has been associated with most of the biolQgic effects of endotoxin (13). This lipid A subunit consists of a D-glucosamine disaccharide backbone substituted with four fatty acid side chains. Endotoxin is found in a wide variety of occupational settings associated with organic dusts derived from plants or animals, such as cotton, cereal grains, silage, rice, and poultry (14-18). In addition, airborne endotoxin has been found in sewage treatment plants, composting plants, offices with contaminated humidifiers, and showers or saunas (19-22)."

Although not immune from the problems affecting the U.S. economy generally, the mineral industry in 1991 contributed nearly $300 billion in the value of processed materials of mineral origin. Supporting this contribution, the Bureau of Mines continued the research and analytical programs highlighted in this annual review. Featured in 1991 were such relatively new programs as minewide monitoring applications in ground control and advances in processing of ceramics and composites, along with more traditional research into health, safety, and mining technology, minerals and materials science, and environmental technology. Under Bureau sponsorship, a National Minerals Policy Forum brought together some 200 executives from industry and Government concerned with minerals policy to begin a dialogue on developipng a policy statement on current minerals issues. A major feature of the forum was the keynote address by Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan, Jr.

This final report summarizes the effort on a very aggressively scheduled and demanding development program undertaken by Westinghouse for the U.S. Bureau of Mines under Contract No. H0101262. The objective of this program was to produce hardware and test it to determine the efficacy of certain concepts of Coal Mine Rescue and Survival as established by the request for proposal and the study performed for the U.S. Bureau of Mines by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). (These are stated in paragraph 1. 1 for reference.) In carrying out this program, Westinghouse provided specific hardware designs in consonance with the objectives of the concepts outlined in the NAE study final report. Though this contract did not require producing final design hardware ready for introduction to the coal mining community, components of the CMR&SS - as delivered - have some value in disaster situations and are to be kept on standby alert. Additional design and production development is required and should be undertaken on most of the subsystems and components before they can be used in the competitive coal mining community.

The pump is the heart of most industrial and mining plants, providing the energy to separate valuable minerals from process feed. The actual effect of the pump, both in terms of production costs and overall process efficiency, is often assumed or misunderstood by engineers due to insufficient pump performance data. Pump performance can be understood and corrected, where required, through continuous performance monitoring, leading to dramatic improvements in both pump life cycle costs and system efficiencies. The performance of every pumping application is subject to variation and the main contributing factors are as follows: ?Unavoidable deviations from pump supplier curves ?Pump wear ?Pump curve derating factors for slurry pumping ?System curve variation ?Deviation from basic principles of centrifugal pump operation. These are discussed in detail through case studies and the author?s personal experiences. This paper shows ways to minimize the effect of these variations, thereby reducing performance loss and preventing damage to the pump. The paper discusses the benefits of efficient pump operation, the requirements of pump performance monitoring, and its practical application to pump operation in the slurry and water environments. The cost of remedial actions is explored and compared against the savings in both power and plant reliability, resulting in a reduced life cycle cost of the pump.
