This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an overview of the use of three unique numerical modeling methods to analyze cutter roof problems in underground coal mines. Cutter roof failures are common in coal mines where the immediate roof is comprised of thin laminae exposed to highly biaxial tectonic stress fields. The predominant mechanism for failure is assumed to be excessive shear stress at the entry corners exceeding the shear strength of the rock. Early work in this area utilized the finite-element method and then the boundary-element method to analyze several cutter roof control measures. Various stress control measures were simulated to estimate their respective effects on reducing the high levels of shear stress at the entry corners. More recent studies made use of the discrete-element method. This method was used to take the analyses beyond the elastic continuum limits to simulate the propagation of a shear fracture and subsequent redistribution of stress within the mine roof. A simple roof bolt model was implemented to show the benefits of bolting to increase the resistance to shearing and separation along horizontal bedding planes and maintain roof stability.

OVER the past two decades, the Cr-Ni stainless steels, popularly termed 18-8 steels, have been used in ever increasing amounts in the aircraft, automotive, chemical, transportation, and building industries.' The contribution of nickel to these steels is associated with its strong austenite forming tendencies which assure good hot and cold forming characteristics, and with its beneficial influence upon corrosion resistance, especially in oxidizing acids. The adjustment of the chromium and nickel contents has been used advantageously in controlling the rollability and the response of the mechanical properties of these steels to cold reduction. With the advent of the jet age and the government stockpiling of nickel, considerable emphasis has been placed upon the development of satisfactory low nickel or nickel-free substitute austenitic stainless steels, especially for nonmilitary applications.2 Fer-ritic 17 pct Cr (AISI Type 430) stainless steel has been effectively substituted for the austenitic grades in applications with mildly corrosive exposure. However, the limited formability and ferromagnetic behavior of this grade do not permit its satisfactory use for many applications. To achieve better formability in a nenmagnetic steel and conserve nickel, a number of low nickel substitute austenitic grades of stainless steel have been developed in recent years. In most of these steels, manganese and nitrogen have been substituted for a portion of the nickel content, for example, 17 pct Cr-4 pct Ni-6 pct Mn (AISI Type 201), 18 pct Cr-5 pct Ni-8 pct Mn (AISI Type 202), and 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn, all of which contain approximately 0.15 pct N.1 The precipitation of ferrite when large ingots of these Cr-Ni-Mn-N steels are heated to temperatures high enough for conversion to slabs on conventional universal slabbing mills has seriously affected the hot workability of these steels. This has been especially true in the case of the 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn (sometimes referred to as 15 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-15 pct Mn) composition." Because it is possible that little, if any, nickel will be available for nonmilitary stainless steel applications in the event of a national emergency, a need has existed for a nickel-free austenitic stainless steel containing hot and cold forming characteristics similar to 18-8 steels and corrosion resistance at least comparable to the 17 pct Cr ferritic steel. The aforementioned deleterious effect of ferrite upon the hot working characteristics of the 16 pct Cr-1 pct Ni-17 pct Mn, steel indicates the importance of establishing the austenite-austenite plus ferrite phase boundaries as the first step in the development of nickel-free or low nickel substitute steels. This paper presents the data collected in an elevated temperature constitutional study of the Cr-Ni-Mn-N system at the South Works of the United States Steel Corp. Experimental Procedure The 300 compositions used in the investigation were melted in a 26 Ib induction furnace and cast in 3 14 in. diam by 18 in tall hot-tcpped ingot mo1ds.

The treatment process of a low-grade refractory gold ore containing sulfide minerals and carbonaceous matters was studied in this work. The gold extraction of this ore by all-sliming cyanidation was only 11.75%. Hence, a pretreatment was necessary. In this paper, a flotation-preoxidation-cyanide leaching process was developed. The concentrate from the flotation procedure was processed using different preoxidation methods. A concentrate containing 34.08g/t of gold with the gold recovery ratio of 81.20% was obtained by flotation. After roasting, microwave heating or alkaline pressure oxidation, the gold cyanidation ratio reached 82.37%, 81.26% and 71.09% respectively. Roasting was an effective, reliable and mature technique to oxidize sulfide minerals and carbonaceous matters. Roasting and microwave heating both produced dangerous environmental pollutants while alkaline pressure oxidation was eco-friendly.

This progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines covers 10 mines. It presents comparative costs for drilling with conventional and detachable bits, describes the reconditioning of drill steel, and gives various data on rock drilling at these particular mines. Reports to follow will include similar data on drilling at other metal mines in the United States. A table that greatly simplifies determination of metastable transitions in mass spectra has been prepared. All the mathematically possible metastable transitions of any compound whose molecular weight lies between 26 and 150 can be determined from the table without calculation. The method of utilizing the table is described, using selected peaks from the spectrum of normal butane for illustration. In the mass spectrometer, ions are formed in the isatron and accelerated through a series of slits. Most of these ions reach the collector without further change, but a few dissociate in transit to form new ions. These ions appear in the mass spectrum at neither the mass--to-charge ratio (m/e) of the original ion nor that of the new ion. Parafusos utilizados para fixação de partes submetidos a carregamentos cíclicos estão sujeitos a falhas por fadiga. No estudo do conjunto carcaça/corrediça de um compressor fixado por parafusos prisioneiros - ISO M24x3, que fixam o flange da corrediça falharam prematuramente por fadiga. O objetivo deste trabalho é desenvolver uma metodologia para otimizar o desempenho em fadiga do conjunto parafusado. Para tanto, foram realizados ensaios de fadiga visando o melhor processo de fabricação no desempenho em fadiga. Observou-se que o processo de laminação da rosca seguido de tratamento térmico é o mais adequado para o caso em estudo. A conclusão principal foi que a configuração atual de união do flange com a carcaça, resulta num baixo índice de aperto que é verificado através das cargas máximas que são transferidas diretamente ao parafuso e que aumentando o comprimento do parafuso através da inserção de uma bucha extensora, aumenta a vida em fadiga

The Bureau of Mines estimated the potential availability of iron ore from 129 domestic and foreign mines and deposits in 25 market economy countries. The availability of four products on a total and regional basis was determined from demonstrated resources of 75.3 billion It. From the resources evaluated there are a total of 18.6 billion It of sinter fines, 4.9 billion It of lump ore, 14.7 billion It of pellets, and 820 MMlt of pellet feed potentially available at a 15-pct DCFROR, f.o.b. port. On a regional basis, at or below a total cost of $0.26 per iron unit there are 1.7 billion It, 2.8 billion It, and 186 MMlt of sinter fines potentially available from Brazil, Australia, and Africa, respectively. There are 825 MMlt of lump ore from Brazil and 1.4 billion It from Australia potentially available at or below a total cost of $0.24 per iron unit. There are 2.1 billion It of pellets potentially available from the United States at or below a total cost of $0.80 per iron unit, while 442 MMlt are potentially available in Brazil at or below $0.38 per iron unit. South America has 208 MMlt of pellet feed potentially available at or below a total cost of $0.28 per iron unit. While the resources of iron ore are more than adequate to satisfy demand, the future of the iron ore industry is very dependent upon changes in the world economy, and on the domestic scene, changes in the domestic steel industry and steel imports.

"Tensionable headed roof bolt systems are common in the U.S. mining industry. In the last 15 years or so, they have made a comeback as a hybrid system where a mechanical anchor is used in conjunction with resin. When such a system is used, it is common to use a spherical washer to comply with the requirements of 30 CFR Part 75.204(f)(8). This standard requires an angle-compensating device be used in installations where the bearing plate is offset from the roof bolt axis by an angle greater than five degrees. This paper evaluates system performance of four different traditional angle-compensating device/plate combinations including a new patented extruded plate/extruded washer system that improves overall load capacity and stretch.INTRODUCTIONA large western U.S. underground coal mine was using a fully grouted headed rebar system as their primary support. They had developed their component specifications over many years of working with suppliers to improve and optimize these components to integrate well as a system. As shown in Figure 1, the components included a patented 7 /8"" -diameter Grade 60 headed rebar bolt with a flange capable of full bar load (Walker, 2009) and a patented 8 in x 8 in Grade 3 extruded hole bearing plate manufactured by DieMatic Corporation.The mine decided to pursue a fully grouted tensionable system using a mechanical anchor as the tensioning device. Their primary goal was to eliminate the need for the roof bolt operator to secure (hold) the bolt during resin set time. An additional benefit was the increased initial tension on the bolt. To comply with the requirements of 30 CFR Part 75.204(f)(8), regarding tensioned roof bolts, they were required to include an angle-compensating device because a share of the bolt population would be installed at angles greater than five degrees from the perpendicular to the bearing plate. Also, to improve cycle time and torque/tension consistency, the mine desired to have the washers and anchors assembled at the factory. This required the use of a bearing plate with a center hole large enough to accommodate the 1-3/8-in-diameter mechanical anchor to pass though it during assembly by the roof bolt operator. The mine wanted to continue to use an extruded hole bearing plate in the tensionable system, and EMS was asked to propose a plate and angle-compensating device."

The Bureau of Mines used portable infrared scanners to examine the surface of pillars and faces in the Somerset mine near Somerset, Colo. Zones of temperature buildup, indicative of potential combustion, were detected with the scanners; their existence was verified by temperature measurements with conventional instrumentation. Temperatures of 32° to 6° C were measured on surfaces with normal temperatures of 26° to 35° C. The infrared instruments and techniques appeared to offer a rapid and efficient method for locating potential trouble spots in mines susceptible to fires caused by spontaneous combustion.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated methods of sodium reduction of titanium chlorides to produce high purity titanium metal (14).4/ This investigation was made to obtain a better understanding of the reactions involved in sodium reduction of titanium chlorides and was part of the Bureau's activities toward improving the technology of titanium. Theoretical and experimental evidence show that sodium reduction of titanium tetrachloride occurs by stepwise reactions. The first stage reduction between sodium vapor and vapors of titanium chlorides produces titanium di-and trichlorides which subsequently condense with sodium chloride to form a salt mixture. The second stage reduction takes place in the condensed salt mixture between sodium and titanium subchlorides. Final reduction is a heterogeneous reaction between two separate phases, the a phase which consisted of sodium dissolved in sodium chloride and the ß phase titanium subchlorides dissolved in sodium chloride. The mechanism of the heterogeneous reaction between these phases is electrochemical in nature. The model proposed is a galvanic reaction at the interfacial region.

Asimismo, es importante el rol del ingeniero de Seguridad quien además de su experiencia(5 años) y profesionalismo, se convierte en un intermediario del trabajador y la empresa, ofreciendo soluciones y evaluando las dificultades presentadas. Por ello, se hace importante la función del Pool o Asociación de diversas empresas en tanto difundan la información de la campaña entre los colaboradores de la empresa, a través del uso de prensa y propaganda para el desarrollo de seguridad de las mismas.

THE field of rare metals is so broad that progress can be reported upon many important fronts. Not satisfied with the 92 elements that Mendeleeff and his followers have accepted as legitimate, scientists are trying now to complicate matters by making new elements. Enrico Fermi announced the fabrication of "Element 93". Uranium, instead of being allowed to disintegrate slowly according to its normal habit, was bombarded with neutrons until some of them seemed to have stuck in the nucleus. To understand just what is alleged to have happened all one has to do is to line up the elements in their usual order of ascending atomic weight and imagine, as physicists do, that each atom is a little solar orbit comprising a central mass or planet about which other masses revolve like satellites. Ordinary hydrogen, being very light, consists of only one positively charged proton center, with only one positively charged electron revolving about it. Other atones are progressively more complicated until we come to uranium, which has a relatively big center and 92 particles revolving around it.

Einführung in die Problematik 1.1 Die Bedeutung des Schildausbaus Seit fast 30 Jahren ist die Konkurrenzsituation auf dem Primärenergiemarkt der Bundesrepublik Deutschland durch einen von Erdöl and Erdgas geführten and insbesondere gegen die Steinkohle gerichteten Verdrängungswettbewerb gekennzeichnet, der den Steinkohlenbergbau zu tiefgreifenden RationalisierungsmaBnahmen zwang. In diesem Zusammenhang kam es Anfang der 70er Jahre zur Einrührung des Schildausbaus, der eine erhebliche Produktivitätssteigerung in den Strebbetrieben zur Folge hatte and damit die Uberlebenschance des Steinkohlenbergbaus in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland enorm verbesserte. Der Grund hierfdr lag darin, daB der Schildausbau im Vergleich zu dem vor ihm eingesetzten Rahmen- and Einzelstempelausbau eine wesentlich hdöhere Ausbauleistung erbrachte, weil er sich weit weniger empfindlich gegen Hangendausbruche and aus dem Alten Mann hereinbdschende Bruchberge erwies. So erklärt sich auch die stürmische Entwicklung and die schnelle Verbreitung des Schildausbaus. Bereits 1975 stammte rd. 50 % der Fdrderung aus Schildstreben, 1990 waren es fiber 75 % and heute sind es fiber 90 %. 1.2 Die Staubentstehung beim Schildausbau Die Erfolge des Schildausbaus sind unbestritten. Jedoch nahmen :nit seiner Einführung die Probleme der Staubentstehung and Staubbekämpfung im Vergleich zum Ein zelstempel- and Rahmenausbau erheblich zu. MaBgebend dafür sind hauptsächlich folgende Gründe: - Abbau von dozen nit gebrächen, weichen Hangendschichten, die erst durch Schildausbau abbaubar wurden, - Zerkleinerung des auf den breiten Kappen aufliegenden Bergematerials infolge der höheren Ausbaustiltzkrafte des Schildausbaus, Zermahlen der sick in die Spaltabdichtungen hineinarbeitenden Bergestückchen, - Erhöhung der Wettergeschwindigkeit infolge der durch die Baufarm des Schildausbaus bedingter. Verkleinerung des Strebquerschnitts verbunden mit der Aufwirbelung and Aussichtung von Staub, - Aufwirbelung von bereits abgelagertem Staub im Bruchraum beim Hereinbrechen der Dachschichten. Die genannten Gründe treten zumeist nicht in jedem Abbaubetrieb gleichzeitig auf. Sie rind vielmehr u.a. abhängig vom Ausbautyp, von den Gebirgsverhältnissen and von der Abbaugeschwindigkeit. The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological model seven further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip.. This report describes hydrogenation of petroleum distillate fuels in bench scale equipment and the effects of hydrogenation on the storage stability and the composition of the fuels. Two distillate fuels were hydrogenated in laboratory equipment using a commercially available cobalt molybdate catalyst. Reactor temperatures were varied from 600° to 850° F and pressures from 100 to 600 psig. Product fuels were analyzed by ASTM, Bureau of Mines, mass, and infrared methods. Hydrogenation of a catalytically cracked fuel from Oklahoma crude oil significantly improved the storage stability, reducing insoluble gum formed during 9 months of storage at 110° F from 19.0 to 1.3 mg per 100 ml fuel, average. Conversion of the olefins to other hydrocarbon types varied with the temperature of hydrogenation--at 700° to 850° F the conversion was mainly to aromatics, at 650° F about 50:50 to saturates and aromatics, at 600° F principally to saturates. Processing a fuel composed of a mixture of virgin distillate and catalytically cracked stock, both from Illinois crude, at 700° F and 200 psig effected marked improvement in stability; the buildup of insoluble gum in storage was lowered from 18.3 to less than 1 mg per 100 ml fuel.

The first introduction of fuzzy theory in the nineteenth century created room for continuous research and application in various fields. Fuzzy set theory has been globally applied in geotechnical engineering, and research in this field continues to date. The fuzzy inference system is considered to be one of the most popular techniques adopted to resolve some of the geomechanical challenges faced in both surface and underground excavations. This paper unpacks fuzzy theory-based approaches in mine geomechanics with the aim of expanding the innovative application of the same approach specifically in tunnel geomechanics. This aim was achieved by conducting a review of recent successful and unsuccessful applications of fuzzy inference systems in underground excavations/tunnelling geomechanics. Indeed, this review has outlined some cardinal points associated with the ability of the technique to solve complex geomechanics problems. However, the success of the technique was accompanied by a few limitations associated with the methodology. Finally, a future outlook associated with the technique has been established.

During incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW), various environmentally harmful elements and heavy metals are liberated partly into bottom ash, and partly carried away with the off-gases and subsequently trapped in fly-ash. If these waste incineration residues are not properly processed and immobilized, it can lead to secondary environmental pollution to the air, soil and water. The stricter environmental regulations require a higher immobilization efficiency of the waste incineration residues, which is the main objective of the present cooperation research. Within the present project, a systematic scientific research on various MSWI residues has been carried out, including sampling, low or high temperature processing and leaching tests. In the present paper, the major results have been summarized. The research results reveal that through appropriate combined pre-processing and high temperature vitrification, the bottom ash and fly ash can be efficiently stabilized. The results achieved provide a valuable alternative route to treat the solid residues from incinerators, and to make efficient recycling and safe utilization possible.

"In recent years, the increased demand for advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) mainly had been driven by the need of the automotive industry to reduce weight and to improve safety. Beside good ductility and high strength, those steels have a high bake hardening (BH) effect, giving additional contribution to the strength of structural parts, subjected to the paint baking process. In this paper we concentrate results gained for hot rolled dual phase (DP) steels.For the simulation of changing process conditions within the final hot rolling the specimens were hot deformed using different schedules of temperatures and reductions, selected according to the non-recrystallization temperature (TnRX). It was possible to refine the DP steel structure by control-ling the deformation temperature and the amount of strain below TnRX during the thermo-mechanical controlled processing (TMCP). This structure refinement resulted in an improvement of the strength and BH behaviour. A wide spectrum of mechanical properties could be obtained depending on the different hot deformation schedules. The best strength and BH levels were recorded for the deformation below TnRX at the highest amount of strain.IntroductionDP steels are characterized by a good formability, high strength and a good compromise between strength and ductility [1]. Moreover, the DP steels exhibit a continuous yielding behaviour, low yield point and a high strain-hardening coefficient [2]. Furthermore, the DP steels often show a large potential for bake hardening (BH). BH refers to the increase in yield strength as a result of the paint baking treatment of the shaped auto-body parts. The primary mechanism that causes the additional strengthening is the immobilization of dislocations by the segregation of interstitial atoms, known as classical static strain aging [3]. The increase of strength thus achieved allows a further reduction of sheet thickness and improves the crash safety and the dent resistance. The BH of special steel qualities is technically used in DP, where e.g. the increase in strength is realized in the final heat treatment [4]. Previous own investigations [5-6] stated that the BH effect of DP is much stronger than that one for conventional BH steels."

The problems caused by interaction in multi-horizon mining are world wide and are not limited to the coal industry. These problems will continue to increase as mining of new seams multiplies and replaces production from mined out horizons. Interaction problems are particularly evident in the Appalachian coal fields which contain many mineable, contiguously placed coal seams. Selection of the mining sequence of these seams, historically and currently, is based primarily on considerations of seam ownership, availability, and economics. Experience has shown, however, that mining any seam can seriously affect subsequent operations in coal seams both above and below the one being mined. This interaction effect is often detrimental to the recovery cost and safety of mining the subsequent seams. Designing to avoid or minimize interaction effects represents a major challenge to the modern coal mining industry and therefore is the focus of this research. In an effort to evaluate past interaction effects and provide guidelines for future mine design, interactive ground control problems were categorized into four areas. These are pillar load transfer, massive interseam shearing, subsidence and pressure arching effects. To facilitate research, each of these areas was studied separately although in reality these subdivisions are arbitrary and have considerable overlap.
