A survey of the literature on ELF and VLF atmospheric noise has been made. Most measurements have concentrated on the vertical electric field and the horizontal magnetic field rather than the vertical magnetic field which is of interest in transmission between horizontal loops. The limited vertical magnetic field data indicates that the vertical component is generally 10 to 20 dB below the horizontal component. Three laterally inhomogeneous earth models have been analyzed for conversion of horizontal to vertical magnetic field. The rough surface model examines surface effects, the inhomogeneous thin sheet model treats volume effects, and the buried cylinder model treats localized man-made effects. All three models predict the possibility of significant conversion from horizontal to vertical magnetic field. A thin sheet model has also been used to examine transmission from a buried magnetic dipole source. It is found that the predicted fields more nearly model the measured data than does the homogeneous half-space model.

Field investigation of surface subsidence events associated with both active and abandoned underground coal mines in the United States has established criteria that enable the prediction and classification of mine-related subsidence. The key was establishing the role of geology in all types of subsidence and the recognition of beam subsidence in specific geologic settings. The classification is based on overburden thickness, variations in stratigraphy, topography and mine plan. Types of subsidence are Pit, Room, Sag, and Beam. Pit subsidence is associated with three geologic settings: shale overburden, seasonally wet unconsolidated overburden, and perched water table in unconsolidated overburden. Room subsidence occurs where the roof across the width of the room fails to the surface and a shallow depression develops. Sag subsidence develops where the pillars are failing in conjunction with roof failure. Overburden thickness is generally greater than 150 feet. Beam subsidence can occur in all terrains. It is associated with retreat mining and room and pillar mining where pillar crushing or pillar compression has taken place and barriers are left inplace. They occur as beam arch or one-sided beam subsidence. Beam arch failure occurs where mining has taken place on both sides of a coal barrier. One-sided beam failure is associated with retreat mining moving from a barrier towards the entry in hilly topography. This type of subsidence occurs where a hard, thick, rock unit is acting as a bridge supporting the overburden and outcrops on the hill side.

Study of the distribution of minor elements between copper matte andfayalite slag is important in determining appropriate methods tomaximise the recovery of valuable metals and the rejection of harmfulelements. Boliden Mineral AB operate a large copper smelter in northern Sweden, where they had noted that the loss of silver to the slag in the settling furnace appeared to be a direct function of the tin content of the slag. This work was aimed at determining whether or not this was a cause-and-effect relationship. Copper matte containing approximately 50 wt per cent copper and small amounts of silver and tin was equilibrated with silica-saturated fayalite slag at 1250¦C, then quenched. The matte and slag were then analysed for their silver and tin contents. It was found that there was no relationship between the silver distribution and the tin distribution. The silver matte/slag distribution ratio had a value of 120 ¦ 40 while that for tin was 2.8 ¦ 0.3. It is suggested that the most likely cause of the relationship observed at the Boliden smelter was matte entrainment in the slag.

STUDY of the thermal-solution process was begun by treating crushed oil shale in a small autoclave at temperatures of 700° to 950° F. The effect of temperature, reaction time, type of solvent, and richness of shale upon the amount of organic matter that was removed from the oil shale was thus determined. Following this orientation work a semicontinuous, bench-scale apparatus was built so that heated solvent could be pumped through a bed of shale under elevated pressure, thus removing the converted organic matter from the spent shale. After some operating experience had been gained, a continuous unit was constructed. This permitted treating a slurry of shale oil and pulverized oil shale at about 300 p. s. i. and temperatures of 750° to 850° F. for various retention times. Considerable cracking and polymerization of the shale oil were found to take place during the process. In an attempt to prevent this, a study was made of extraction of the shale in batch-type autoclaves under high partial pressures of hydrogen at total gas pressures of as much as 4,300 p. s. i. at 850° F. The thermal-solution process was found to convert over 90 percent of the organic matter in oil shale to oil and gas. The highest yields of gas and oil obtained without hydrogen pressure were equivalent to 119 weight-percent of those obtained from the same shale by Fischer assay. With a high partial pressure of hydrogen, yields equivalent to 126 weight-percent of Fischer assay were obtained. However, the oil produced by thermal solution has a higher boiling range than that obtained by other retorting methods, particularly so if the thermal-solution process is used without a high partial pressure of hydrogen. Nondistillable oil (all benzene-soluble material that would not distill under 2 mm. Hg absolute pressure without cracking) equivalent to over 100 percent of the organic matter in the shale was obtained without hydrogen pressure in the system. When the process was carried out under hydrogen pressure, the yield of nondistillable oil amounted to 60 to 70 weight-percent of the organic matter. Part of this heavy material is formed partly by polymerization and condensation of the shale-oil solvent used. These reactions, as well as cracking of the solvent to form gas and a carbonaceous deposit on the shale, are unfavorable features of the process.

This report summarizes research into the root causes of failures in mine power systems which impact safety and reliability. Abnormally low fault currents, due to arcing faults, self-excited systems, and fallen trolley wires are examined and quantified. The reliability of components which are critical for safety is studied, as well as reliability of components which are crucial to the mining pro cess. Failure rates are found through in-situ tests, accelerated life tests, studies of mine maintenance, and fault-tree analysis. Reliability data is used to predict fatalities and lost-time accidents through computer-aided fault-tree analysis. Analytical support tasks reported include the deriving of trailing-cable ampacities under cyclic loading, and the measurement of connected ground beds.

"At Department of Ferrous Metallurgy of the RWTH Aachen University in Germany steels in the system Fe-Mn-C(-Al) are investigated and produced in the framework of the SFB 761 ""steel-ab initio"". A new world of steel grades leads to special challenges regarding the production and recycling at the end-of-life cycle of product. In order to recycle high manganese steel alloys the EAF has to be chosen preferentially. A good slag practice is necessary avoiding loss of manganese content during melting in the EAF. This paper investigates on the reaction kinetics at the interface of slag and steel containing Mn (17-22 wt.-%) and up to 3 wt.-% Al. The effect of changes in the composition of slag and steel on the interfacial reaction kinetics is studied. The thermodynamic software FactSage™ is utilized to calculate the composition of slag and steel at equilibrium.IntroductionTRIP and TWIP steels are highly alloyed steels which show superior strength and ductility when compared to standard carbon steel and stainless steel alloys. These TRIP- and TWIPsteel grades contain typically 15-30 wt.-% manganese, 0-4 wt.-% silicon and aluminum, and up to 1 wt.-% carbon. Steels containing 18-28 wt.-% manganese and 0.7-1.2 wt.-% carbon together with aluminum addition from 3 to 12 wt. -% and without silicon refer to TRIPLEX high manganese steel alloys. These alloys combine high strength at even large ductility [ 1-4]. At the Department of Ferrous Metallurgy (IEHK) of the RWTH Aachen University in Germany, steels in the system Fe-Mn-C(-Al) is under investigation at the collaborative research center, SFB 761 ""Steel-ab initio"". In this project, high manganese alloyed TRIP and TWIP steels are in the focus.The mechanical properties such as high strength and high ductility make this kind of steels perfect candidates for impact absorption applications in auto body such as vehicle doors and bumpers [2, 5]. With increasing the use of TRIP-, TWIP- and TRIPLEX-steels more high manganese steel scraps will be available at the end of life cycle of products, which need to develop the technologies and metallurgical processes to recovery of high manganese steel. A new steel grade brings new challenges in recycling. In order to recycle high manganese steel scraps the electric arc furnaces (EAF) have to be chosen preferentially [1]. Nevertheless it's not easy to prevent the manganese loss during the process in EAF. During the oxygen refining of high manganese molten steel in EAF the manganese content decreases strongly by oxidation and vaporization, which is affected by slag composition, slag properties such as basicity and viscosity, slag weight as well as melt temperature [6-8]."

Coal-mine explosions in the United States during the past 10 years ranked third among the causes of coal-mine fatalities and constituted 16.1 percent of the total fatalities. In Indiana, however, during this same period the percentage of fatalities from this cause was much higher than the average percentage for the entire country. It is only through knowledge of the factors that have led to these past explosions that intelligent steps may be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Although information concerning many of the earlier explosions is lacking, an attempt has been made to tabulate the information available in the hope that it may be of assistance in calling attention to some of the principal causes of explosions in Indiana.

Within ten months of the first significant intersection on the Vera deposit, approval was given to proceed with a $28.3 M underground development of the Vera-Nancy gold mine. Contrary to what the timeframe suggests, the development of the underground mine was planned in a logical and methodical manner which enabled confirmation of the resource, evaluation of the orebody for mining and sufficient production to recommence milling operations at the Pajingo treatment plant. This paper describes the underlying factors on which the project was planned and developed. The approach has successfully enabled the mine to be in production 18 months after discovery without compromising any future production or potential expansion

IN the paper entitled Block Caving at the King Mine (1), which was presented at the Annual General Meeting held in April, 1934, at Quebec, it was pointed out that, owing to certain conditions and financial restrictions, it was advisable to provide a temporary shaft. This was raised from the )00-ft. level to the bottom of the pit, and a 45-degree incline track was constructed up the face of the pit to surface. The temporary shaft and incline were within the ore-body, but were to be used only until such time as the new shaft-the subject of this paper-could be sunk and made ready for operation. After a careful study had been made of all available information pertaining to the ore-body, including examination of diamond-drill core records and geological data, a shaft location was selected well outside the ore-body. Further, since the crusher and dryer buildings are located over part of the ore-body, it was necessary to plan the removal of these buildings and to construct a new crushing and drying plant. This, and the new shaft, must operate in conjunction with the present mill and rock storage bin, which would continue robe used as formerly. No part of this programme, with the exception of drifting toward the shaft site, was started prior to 1937. More than usual detail on technical features is given in this paper in the hope that some parts of it may be of assistance to other members of the Institute who have to undertake somewhat similar work. The engineering and operating staff designed and supervised the work, while at the same time carrying on regular production in four mines at the rate of 12,000 tons of rock mined per day, the output at the King mine being at the rate of 140 tons per hour. No additional engineers were required.

"INTRODUCTION The recent drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a co-product of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut-off 10% of the world’s vanadium output. Earlier in February, 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation. This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries namely, China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 98% of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains by far the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage. This paper summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal. TREND IN VANADIUM EXPLORATION The most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grade than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers. The 10% shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the State of Bahia in Brazil, which commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to reach design capacity of 11,400 tonnes of vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) by the end of 2015. The estimated production1 for 2015 is 6,500 tonnes of V2O5 at a target production cost of $3.60/lb. This is the first vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in over 35 years."

Since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, the need for improved duet control methods has become imperative. It has been proposed that one promising dust control technique would be the application of water through the cutter drum. In November of 1972, the Jeffrey Mining Machinery Co., who had been pursuing the development of wet drum miners since 1969, completed the manufacture of a 120M HELIMINER which had sprays in front of the cutting bits on a fixed width drum. On June 27, 1973 Jeffrey and the Bureau of Mines signed the contract numbered B0232060 for the purpose of evaluating "the effectiveness of respirable dust control on a Jeffrey 120M HELIMINER by use of water piped through the head." This evaluation, as described by the contract, was to be accomplished by the collection and analysis of dust samples at various locations of an operating mine production section.

A remote heat-activated stench gas/tracer gas mine alarm system was developed to reduce the time between fire detection and personnel notification. The stench gas/ tracer gas system contains ethyl mercaptan for personnel warning and a fluorocarbon for tracer gas detection by instrumentation. A system was also developed which can be interfaced with multiplex mine phones. In-mine tests were conducted and several systems are presently installed in a hard rock mine.

The Resource Management Act 1991 represented an innovative and unique piece of planning and environmental legislation when it was introduced. Since the Act was passed into law in 1991 it has been subject to nine amendments, many of which were of the ætinkerÆ variety. These amendments recognise that the Act has not been as successful in providing the æone-stop shopÆ for resource users that the Act was hoped to be. The latest and most significant attempt at changing the Act was the Resource Management Amendment Act 2003. The amendments made by the Amendment Act have proved to be largely unsuccessful in achieving any significant changes to the way resources are managed in New Zealand, and have failed to address many of the concerns which drove the original Resource Management Amendment Bill in 1999. The recent decision to discontinue further investment in Project Aqua has once again placed the Act in the spotlight as a significant hand-brake on major projects. This particular event has led to yet another review to be undertaken this year. The review will focus on five key areas:   1.   achieving the right balance of national and local interests; 2.   improving the design and process for local policy formulation; 3.   improving the consent decision making process; 4.   allocation of natural resources (water, air and geothermal); and 5.   supporting measures for building capacity and promoting best practice and implementation at the local authority level.  It is important for the business community and the mining industry in particular to seize the opportunity that this review provides to make sure that any amendments undertaken as a result of the review achieve the aims listed above. The review needs to be considered in light of the current regime for the management of natural resources in New Zealand. In addition to the Resource Management Act 1991, the Crown Minerals Act 1991 and the Building Act 1991, which form the core resource statutes in New Zealand, there have been other developments affecting the regime. Special legislation over and above the Resource Management Act 1991 has been enacted to protect the Hauraki Gulf and special legislation is currently being considered to protect the Waitakere Ranges in Auckland. In the Hauraki District mining is prohibited in some areas and a plan change mechanism is specified as the appropriate tool to use in the event a mineral resource is to be developed in those areas. The current review is a further opportunity to remedy the inadequacies of the Act.

AN important regional meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was held, at Salt Lake City on Aug. 22 to 26, jointly with the fifth annual meeting of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress. The whole meeting was marked by enthusiasm, keen attention to the subjects under discussion, and many renewals of personal contacts. The trips to the various plants were well attended and the local press paid much attention to the meeting. The A. I. M. E. sessions began Aug. 23, with a non-technical morning session. J. 0. Elton, manager for the International Smelting Co., presided. The purpose of this session was to present in a non-technical manner the relation of flotation to mining, smelting, and the State. Ernest Gayford, metallurgist with the General En-gineering Co. of Salt Lake City, gave the definitions of flotation as suggested by Rickard, the dictionary, Weinig, and Taggart. The active agent in flotation is the air bubble, and the two prime requisites are the formation of bubbles and the creation of selective action of the bubbles for metallic particles instead of for gangue particles. Broadly, all the sulfides are floatable minerals, but the oxides, carbonates, silicates and sulfates are not. As far as Utah is concerned, flotation has been one of the greatest means of conserving its natural re-sources, because it has converted millions of tons of waste rock into pay ore; it is recovering millions of pounds of metal formerly lost in tailings; it has con-verted the zinc from a liability into an asset; and has kept thousands of men at work and distributed millions in dividends for the benefit of the State. As to the future of flotation, Mr. Gayford can con-ceive that the next 5 or 10 years may see as much, if not more, advance than was made in the preceding period. The big problem is dressing oxides, carbonates, silicates, and sulfates, and simplification of the number of reagents, also the separation of different gangue min-erals from one another.

Kuczynski's formula has been derived for the case of nonspherical particles. TWO formulae of Kuczynski's type have been derived, one describing the increase in tensile strength, the other describing the progress of shrinkage of a powder compact. It has been strength,shown that the exponents of all three formulae each contain two magnitudes of different physical characters, viz, the geometrical factor a and the kinetic factor ß. The interrelationships between the three exponents are stated. SOME years ago Kuczynski1 experimentally showed that the radius, x, of the area of contact between very small spherical metal particles and a metallic block is related to the time of sintering, t, by the following equation x = constant tk [11 where k has the value 1/5 or 1/7. Assuming that the metal particles were perfect spheres and the metallic block was perfectly flat, he derived the foregoing equation from theoretical considerations of the process of material transport in metals, and he showed that exponent k is different for different mechanisms of transport, e.g., k = 1/2 for viscous flow (according to Frenkel2), k = 1/3 for evaporation and condensation, k = 1/5 for volume diffusion, and k = 1/7 for surface diffusion. From this Kuczynski concluded that the mechanism of transport was either volume diffusion or surface diffusion, depending on whether the value of k, as found in his experiments, was 1/5 or 1/7. Subsequently. Cabrera8 corrected Kuczynski's calculations with regard to surface diffusion, showing that the theoretical value of exponent k is 1/5 for both volume and surface diffusion. He supposed that the different experimental values of k were due to slight differences in the shape of the metal particles. An exponential relationship similar to the aforementioned was found by Okamura, Masuda, and Kikuta,4 Masuda and Kikuta, and Takasaki8 when studying the rate of shrinkage on powder compacts during sintering. The authors measured the shrinkage by means of the fraction w = Vp — V./Vp — V,,,, where V,, is the volume of the green compact, V, is the volume of the sintered compact, and V,,, is the volume of the compact in its densest state. This fraction, w, they found, is related to the time of sintering, t, by the equation w == constant tm. [21 Further, Bockstiegel, Masing, and Zapf7 observed that the tensile strength, s, of sintering iron powder compacts can also be related to the time of sintering, t, by an equation of the foregoing type, i.e., s = constant tn. [3] For exponent n the values 0.28 (S=2/7) and 0.35 ( 2/5) were obtained, and the authors pointed out that there might exist a simple interrelation between exponent n as found in their experiments and exponent k in Kuczynski's equation. The authors supposed that 2k = n, since the strength of adhesion between a metal sphere and a block (as in Kuczyn-ski's experiments) must approximately be proportional to their contact area, p. x2. Theoretical Considerations This paper is an attempt to correlate the fundamental experiments of Kuczynski's type with the results obtained with powder compacts as represented by Egs. 2 and 3. In particular, the paper is to show how the rate of sintering is influenced by the geometry of the sintering particles and by the type of material transport. As the geometry of particles conglomerating in a powder compact is very complex, some simplifying assumption has to be made, of course, in order to adapt the problem to mathematical treatment. In the following paragraph a suitable simplification is introduced, and Kuczynski's formula is derived for the case of nonsphcrical particles. Relation Between Area of Contact and Sintering Time—As the face of contact between two particles in a sintering powder compact is not necessarily a circle (as in the case of spheres sintering to a block), Kuczynski's formula is modified as follows: Let the perimeter of the face of contact be described by means of polar coordinates R, 4, as shown in Fig. la, so the area of contact, f, is determined by f= 1/2 . S112p[R(Æ) ]2 dÆ [4] Then, let the two particles be intersected by a plane perpendicular to area f. The intersection is shown in Fig. lb. According to the nomenclature in this figure, the distance, h, between the surfaces of the two particles is a function of T and Æ: h = h(r,Æ). "Up until the mid 1960's, the only available methods for making continuous weight measurements were through the use of mechanical and electro-mechanical weigh scales. It was during this time period that a new concept in weighing was introduced. It was known and is still known as the nuclear belt weigh scale.During the early days of its appearance in the market place, many things were learned about its advantages and disadvantages for weighing various materials. As with many new devices, it had to go through a ""wringing out stage"" before it became accepted by the weighing industry. Even today, even though it is a proven device, there are skeptics who believe the nuclear belt weigh scale will not survive. Let me assure you, it is here to stay.. 'PRINCIPLE OF MEASUREMENTThe nuclear belt weigh scale consists of a ""C"" Frame assembly which houses the radioactive source (Cesiwn 137) and the radiation detector (Ionization chamber). The ""C"" Frame assembly is put in place around the conveyor belt as shown in Figure 1. The radiation source emits a fan shaped beam of radiation which covers the full width of the material being conveyed on the belt. Radiation which has passed through the material on the belt is detected by the ionization chamber which is located in the lower arm of the ""C"" Frame assembly. The ionization chamber changes the radiation energy into an electrical signal which is related to pounds per foot belt loading. This signal is transmitted to a highly stable amplifier which combines the pounds per foot signal with a belt travel signal from a digital tachometer which allowed the scale user to be able to monitor total mass being conveyed. Many so-called conventional type scales use belt speed rather than travel to obtain mass per unit time, and then integrate the signal to obtain their weight signal. This unnecessary step tends to erode the overall accuracy of the weighing system."

In the green backfilling mining of underground coal mines, gangue in a coal seam is used to replace and fill goafs. However, the gas drainage time changes in the amount of gangue output and order in the extraction sequence of stope blocks, thereby changing the production output. A multi-objective integer programming model was proposed to solve this based on an improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm. The results show a feasible gangue filling rate can be found and the extraction sequence for a long-term planning time is optimized. It increases the planned annual output by 26% and reduces equipment idle time.
