Abstract: To excavate oil-gas pipeline ditches in a rocky region or area the explosive method is needed. When a parallel ditch is to be dug by blasting near or in the vicinity of an existing pipeline, a safe criterion must be determined to ensure safety for the latter. In this investigation, with the construction of the second phase of the West-East Gas Pipeline Project, we carried out real blasting tests and numerical simulations to explore the safety criteria for the existing pipeline. Through this investigation, we obtained the safe strain elasticity threshold es2000µe, blast vibration velocity calculation formula, and the maximum vibration velocity Vmax=14cm/s(5.51in./s) for the pipe under blast shock loading, and worked out how to determine the charge size in the follow-up blasting excavation. These results can be used to determine the maximum explosive weight per delay and decide delays for the initiation circuit network in blasting a parallel pipeline ditch, and to make safety assessments for the existing pipeline in service. Having successfully been applied in the second and third phases of the West-East Gas Pipeline Project, China-Russia Oil Pipeline Project and China-Myanmar Gas Pipeline Project, these findings are very significant for other similar pipeline construction.

No one process, product or effect of the minerals sector can be viewed in isolation when addressing sustainable development. Meaningful assessments of the minerals sector require that its processes and production are drawn together in a generic framework that gives a holistic view of its performance and progress. Lifecycle Assessment is increasingly accepted as an appropriate means of constructing such a framework. It is a step beyond using the simplistic concept of the triple bottom line of social, environmental and economic performance to drive and communicate sustainable development. However, fundamental questions need to be raised about the scope and purpose of lifecycle assessment, such as what effects and performances should be assessed, for whom should they be assessed, and what performance indicators should be used and how should they be selected. The principles of eco-efficiency, industrial ecology, The Natural Step (TNS) and other pertinent philosophies and initiatives driving mineral sector sustainable development are outlined to support a lifecycle stewardship vision for the minerals sector. Articulating this vision through a holistic lifecycle indicator system showing inputs and outputs, natural partnerships, effects on community, environment and economy facilitates recognition of problems, opportunities and partnerships that can be usefully pursued.

CUSHMAN TUNNEL No. 2 is adjacent to the Hood Canal, near potlatch, Wash. It is 17 ft. inside .diameter, about 13,000 ft., or two and one- half, miles in length, and is a part of the second unit of the Cushman power project. It connects Cushman ' Dam No. 2 and the penstocks that lead to the power house on the beach about 400 ft. vertically below the outlet of the tunnel. One shaft, 190 ft. deep, and two adits between 300 and 400 ft. long, were provided to speed up driving operations. his arrangement gave 6 working headings, which were operated 24 hr. daily. The shaft provided a manway, cageway, and skipway.

The production of bituminous coal by stripping methods has become an important factor in some areas, especially in the Central and South Central States. In the latter, production at strip mines exceeds that at deep mines. The paper describes the adopted technologies and performance controls related to a special geotechnical engineering solution provided within the scope of the Galataport Project, in Istanbul, Turkey. The scheme is the one applied to the new quay of Salipazari, which is a combination of retaining structure and ground improvement, formed by a combi-wall, a reinforced concrete diaphragm wall and a soil improvement by deep soil mixing (Turbojet). The paper highlights the importance of employing cutting-edge technologies within the foundation engineering field and state-of-the-art electronic control devices, in parallel with the essential human expertise, in order to obtain the desired results in this high profile Project. The results of the in-situ and laboratory tests carried out on the improved soil are also presented. Main discussed points are: • History of Galataport and main Project details. • Design principle and soil condition for the new quay of Salipazari. • Difficulties encountered during execution of DSM. • Preliminary field trial tests conducted to establish the operational parameters, with relevant in-situ and laboratory tests executed. • Preliminary tests on material used for DSM (seawater and CEM IV SR). • Electronic equipment mounted on the rig, which allows the automatic execution of DSM columns. • Final QA/QC tests conducted to verify the performance of DSM, mainly consisting in: coring with relevant laboratory tests on samples (UCS + Es), seismic refraction tomography and seismic cross hole tomography. Correlations between UCS and Es, and between Es and Edyn are also presented. • A cross section of the executed treatment could be inspected on site during excavation. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is designing the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California. The project includes 6.9 km (4.3 miles) of twin-bored tunnels to be constructed through downtown San Jose using two earth pressure balance machines (EPBMs). This paper begins with a project description and update of the project status followed by a description of the relationship between anticipated ground conditions and EPBM requirements. Topics addressed include soil conditioning, abrasion resistance, annulus grouting, face pressure estimation, additional pressure control devices and control measures to limit over-excavation and settlement.

The use of explosives in mining operations is a process that involves the search for an ideal explosive for the type of geological condition of the mineral to be extracted. For the explosives present on the market the majority are based on Ammonium Nitrate. This as it is an ideal balance of high energy efficiency achieved with low development of gas emission. The manufacturing and loading operation of the explosive requires multiple process stages and different raw materials, which, if is not correctly supervised and controlled may cause the development of harmful gases or, in the worst case, even toxic gases. The majority of mining operations are located at remote locations without the presence of communities, and hence individuals, which could be affected by emission of the harmful or even toxic gases. In these operations the protection is mainly to protect the employees of the operation. However, if the operation is located near communities, the effect of these gases becomes a serious problem. The communities' perception of post-blasting gases, according to interviews carried out in this project, describes these as smells of black gunpowder, damp soil with a volatile permanence and medium intensity, sometimes a stinking tone is added. The legislation in Chile that controls the exposure of “workers” to different gases is Supreme Decree 594, 2019 (Decreto Supremo 594). Currently the Chilean Ministry of Environment and Sernageomin (Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería) are taking actions to reform and strengthen oversight, seeking through a short law to provide more tools to the government to decentralize decisions in case of non-compliance with the decree. This paper describes the development and implementation of a permanent and remote gas monitoring system, considering the reasons for choosing the gases to be included in the equipment, the types of sensors and their capabilities, the way to verify in the field the correct functioning of the technology throughout the project, and finally how the data collected in the field is meeting the government's expectations in terms of permanent and online reportability. Additionally, it addresses the continuity of gas monitoring in the community that will disappear in the short term due to the expansion of mining operations, thereby ensuring the protection of both workers and affected communities.

The action of water on a number of Queensland shales which are associated with particular coal measures and oil shales has been studied. The results suggest that the disintegration of some of the shales could cause significant problems in mining and preparation operations. The extent of shale breakdown varies widely from deposit to deposit and from seam to seam but a suitable assessment procedure utilises the test described in AS 1661-1979, and an improved method of presenting the results is described in the paper.

INTRODUCTION In radon dosimetry diffusion chambers with passive [a]-detectors are now in current use to investigate the long-term accumulated indoor exposure of radon and daughters. For the diffusion chamber developed at Karlsruhe the electrochemical etching technique (ECE) was applied to reveal [a]-particles in polycarbonate plastic detectors. Compared to conventional etching, the main advantages of the ECE are the large track diameter, simple track counting in a single field of about 1 cm2, stability of the latent tracks to humidity and temperature and ability for a long-term accumulation up to 1 year. The electrochemical etching system was designed to etch in one run about 101 foils by using a 200 W high voltage generator. The commercial available radon dosimeter system is applied for a country wide program of measuring radon in dwellings. Because of an increasing interest of radon monitoring in mines, environmental monitoring and personnel dosimetry the properties of several track etch detectors have been studied. In the comparative study, Makrofol E, LR 115 and CR 39 were used in the diffusion chamber to investigate the etching techniques, the relative efficiency, the measurable [a]-energy range, and the counting statistic for the measurement of radon concentration. THE KARLSRUHE DIFFUSION CHAMBER The design of the Karlsruhe diffusion chamber is presented in Fig. 1. The upper part of the chamber is closed by a fibreglass filter to separate radon from aerosols, heavy dust particles and radon decay products. Inside the diffusion chamber [a]-particles from radon and daughters are detected by two passive radon detectors, one on the bottom of the chamber and the other in front of the filter. With the fibreglass filter applied the diffusion time is about 1 minute for radon. Therefore, also short-term variations in the radon concentration are recorded by the track detector. Mainly because of the short halflife of thoron (56 s) only about 7 % of the thoron concentration is expected in the diffusion chamber. Radon monitoring provides the estimation of the long-term accumulated mean value of the radon concentration with a lowest detectable concentration of 0.1 pCi/1 after 3 months accumulation by using polycarbonate track etch detectors, an electrochemical etching technique and track counting in a single field of 1 cm2. The diffusion chamber was optimized for the polycarbonate track detector with respect to chamber geometry and detector position [1]. Table 1 presents data for 3 different diffusion chamber designs. The radon sensitivity of the diffusion chamber depends on the [a]-energy discrimination and the angular response of the [a]-track detector. The difference between foil No 2 and foil No 1 can be explained by an additional plate-out effect of radon daughters on foil No 3. The high sensitivity of foil No 3 compared to that of foil No 2 is caused by an increase of the effective volume and the effective area for [a]-particle from radon and from plated-out decay products, respectively. Additional experiments have been performed in order to investigate the electrostatic properties of the plastic material and the properties of the diffusion filter [1]. The properties of bare a-detectors were compared with those inside the diffusion chamber. In contrast to laboratory results, dust particles deposited on the detector surface or in the environment of the detector obviously affect the reproducibility of the bare detector significantly. After 4 months exposure in dwellings the scatter of 10 dosimeters exposed in the same room exceeds a factor of 3 compared to 15 % for the diffusion chamber. COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TRACK ETCH DETECTORS Detector types and evaluation technique In the comparative study the properties of the following plastic track etch detectors have been applied: - LR 115 from Kodak Pathé, France, is a red dyed cellulose nitrate layer of 13 µm thickness on a 100 µm thick polyester support. The holes appears as bright spots in a dark red background. In an optical microscope counting of through etched [a]-tracks which must penetrate the detector layer - CR 39 from Pershore, England, is an ally1 diglycol carbonate plastic of about 300 m thickness. The normal etched [a]-tracks are counted by an optical microscope and the ECE [a]-tracks by a microfiche reader.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated calcium fluoride (CaF2) assisted sulfuric acid (H2S04) leaching as an alternative to the melting-quenching procedure to obtain Mn from domestic manganese silicate resources. Pyroxmangite [(Mn, Fe) Si03] ore containing, in percent, 34.4 Mn, 22.8 Si, 2.6 Ca, and 1.3 Fe was leached in a 500-mL resin kettle. Ninety-six percent of the Mn was extracted under conditions of 330 g/L ore, 245 g/L H2S04, 35 g/L CaF2, 90' C, and 2 h. To incorporate electrowinning in recovering Mn, the ore was leached with a simulated spent anolyte solution containing, in grams per liter, 12 Mn, 140 H2S04, 130 (NH4)2S04 (ammonium sulfate), and 5 CaF2. Manganese extraction of 92 pct was achieved from 130 giL ore leached at 90° C in 3 h. The Fe, silica (SiOJ, and other impurities were precipitated from the pregnant solution by neutralization with ammonia (NH3). Manganese of greater than 99-pct purity was deposited at a cathode current density of 50 mA/ cm2 at 30° C, with a current efficiency of 65 pet in a two-compartment cell. A flowsheet was proposed for the leaching and electrowinning procedure.

Several articles have recently been published discussing the conditions necessary for accurate measurements of temperatures in the open-hearth steel furnace. In the course of a study of refractories service conditions in steel furnaces, the present writers have taken temperatures in several open-hearth shops in the Pittsburgh district. The conclusions, as to conditions necessary for accurate measurements of temperature, are somewhat at variance with those of other investigators. The subject is closely connected both with the close control of steel-making and the prevention of overheating of the silica refractories used in roofs and walls. It is becoming more and more important to obtain furnace temperatures of fairly definitely known accuracy. At present, the most useful instrument for such measurements is the disappearing-filament type of optical pyrometer. This method of measurement has formed the basis of most other discussions on the subject and was also used by the writers. Previous Investigations In 1916, Burgess' made perhaps the first systematic series of measurements in steel furnaces. The emissivity figures of 0.40 for liquid steel and of 0.53 to 0.65 for liquid slags had been determined by the Bureau of Standards and were used by Burgess in this work. These correction factors are still being used and are regarded as fairly accurate, so that the tapping and teeming temperatures on metal streams given by Burgess should be very nearly correct. Most of his temperatures of furnace roofs and slag surfaces were taken while flames were present in the furnaces and include a few roof temperatures above 1700' C. (3100' F.).

During the months of April and May 1992, the Phelps Dodge Hidalgo smelter underwent a major turnaround. This was the third such turnaround in the life of the facility which was commissioned in 1976. During the third furnace campaign, the smelter processed 5.2 million tons of concentrate producing 2.6 billion pounds of anode copper over a 7.5 year period. The critical path on the fifty-nine (59) day turnaround schedule was the reconstruction of the Outokumpo flash furnace which integrated some modifications with standard rebuild practices. Modifications included incorporation of horizontal cooling jackets throughout the furnace settler as well as the installation of castable refractory in the reaction and uptake shafts.

Two samples of the Lower Hartshorne (Spadra) bed were collected: A sample of the raw coal with the machine cuttings excluded, and a sample of the machine cuttings exclusively. Analysis of the 5-inch by 200-mesh size fraction of the raw coal, excluding machine cuttings, showed that a product meeting minimum quality specifications could be produced by washing at 1.60 specific gravity, yielding a theoretical 93.7 percent of clean coal. A negligible amount of near-gravity material at the separation gravity indicated an easy washing problem. The sample of machine cuttings had a maximum size of 2 inches and contained about 50 percent ash. Washability tests of the 2-inch by 200-mesh size fraction indicated that a theoretical yield of 30.0 percent of specification-grade coal could be achieved by washing at 1.49 specific gravity. As the machine cuttings represent an estimated 10 percent of the total coal mined, their inclusion in the mine output would increase the theoretical net yield of salable coal by only 3.7 percent. Because the machine cuttings contained a high percentage of sink 1.80 specific-gravity material, they had neither an effect on the separating gravity required to clean the raw coal nor on the difficulty of separation. Gabbing underground versus transporting the cut-tings to the surface for disposal or washing either separately or combined with the raw coal involves a number of practical, economic; and intangible factors; hence, no specific recommendations could be made. A discussion of some of the factors involved in dealing with a similar problem is given by Gandrud and Riley.4

In mining coal, the Nation's principal mineral fuel, loss of life has been much lower recently than in earlier years when coal mining contributed so heavily to the industrial-accident death toll in the United States. Particularly notable has been the relatively small number of deaths during the past few years compared with the number that occurred 20 or 30 years ago. Reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, covering all commercially operated mines that were active during all or any part of the calendar year 1935, showed that accidents during that year had resulted in the loss of 1,242 lives. This death toll, although regrettable, represents a material improvement over the industry's experience during most years prior to 1935, and especially over the industry's worst year, 1907, when 3,242 men were killed. Fewer lives were lost in 1933, when 1,064 men were killed at work, than during any year for which complete figures are available.

Mining steeply dipping coal seams is a difficult task in the mining industry. Prior to 1996, fully mechanized longwall mining methods along the seam strike direction were tried in China and other countries. Due to its larger coal reserve in steep seams, China made more but still limited progresses on mining in such seams than the other major coal-mining countries. In the last two decades, accelerated research efforts have been made to improve the mining technology in steeply dipping coal seams. Based on these works, a dynamic model of ?R-S-F? system under asymmetrical constrains in mining steep seam is established and the theory of strata control and hazard prevention begin to be formed. The key technologies for mining steep coal seams include: global and regional strata control methods in longwall face, methods for the longwall face machines to sustain static and dynamic loads, and flexible protection technology. These theory and technologies have been successfully applied to mining of steep coal seams of varying thickness and hardness, with hard and soft roof and floor, and with high potential of spontaneous combustion in China. In the recent years, the technology has been introduced to Russia, India, Uzbekistan and other countries where steep coal seams are mined.

GEOLOGISTS who are acquainted with the mines of northeastern Mexico realize that the most important lead-silver replacement deposits of the province are confined to a single formation. But since the formation is several hundred meters thick, the author has determined the relative position of the lead mantos in the belief that this information will prove useful in the search for new mines. This article describes the stratigraphic location of lead-silver replacement deposits known in several mines situated in a region comprising part of the states of Coahuila and Nuevo Leon. The area studied extends for 200 km* (125 miles) from east to west and 70 km (45 miles) north to south. Metallogenic Province: The most important metallic deposits of the region have the following common characteristics: 1) The orebodies occur as manto replacements of calcareous sediments. 2) The horizons that have contributed large tonnages of ore are in similar positions in the corresponding stratigraphic columns (as it will be shown later on). 3) Lead is the most important metal in the ores. Silver is commonly present in small amounts. Occurrence of zinc is dependent on the degree of oxidation of the primary sulfides. 4) A large proportion of the total production has been in the form of oxidized ores. 5) The deposits are located on anticlines. Rocks of Cretaceous age crop out over large areas of the states of Nuevo Leon and Coahuila. forming part of a belt that extends to the south along the eastern Sierra Madre. The sediments are cut by a small number of intrusive stocks ranging in characteristics from rhyolite to diorite. The most prominent structural feature of the region is a series of folds trending northwest-southeast. Faulting is not conspicuous in the region, although a major fault zone is found farther East.' The physiography closely reflects structural features, with mountains formed by anticlines and valleys conforming with intermediate synclines. Narrow valleys have also been developed along the axes of many anticlines, where solution of limy sedi- ments and erosion have proceeded along axial tension fractures. Stratigraphy: Rocks of the Upper Cretaceous are exposed in only a small percentage of the total area. Generally they have been eroded away from the mountains and are covered by recent talus and alluvium in the valleys. Humphrey' has published an excellent paper describing the Cretaceous formations of the Sierra de los Muertos, a short distance west of Monterrey. A brief summary of these formations is given below to convey an overall picture of the stratigraphic sequence that prevails just south of the area under consideration. Three conventional uplift tests and 12 Rapid Pile Load Tests (RLT) were performed on total of fifteen 16-inch square pre-cast concrete driven piles at a test site in Emeryville California in December of 2000. The uplift tests were performed in accordance with ASTM standards, and the RLTs were performed using a FUNDEX RLT. The RLT is carried out by dropping a mass of 25-tons on top of the pile, thereby inducing a force that is measured by a load cell. An optical lens records the vertical deflection of LED's that are mounted on the pile. Ultimate uplift and compression capacities of each of the fifteen piles were determined using the Davisson method. Soil parameters were calibrated by back-calculation (cohesion and internal angle of friction) using both the results of conventional uplift load versus deflection curve, as well as the results of the triaxial compression tests. A two-dimensional finite difference model including soil elements, and structural elements representing the test pile was setup using the computer program Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC). FLAC was used to simulate both the uplift as well as the RLT. Strength increase of cohesive material was also accounted for in the analysis. Numerically simulated and theoretically computed pile capacity curves and axial deformation variation with applied load curves are in close agreement to the observed curve during the field test. Conclusions are made from this test site regarding the factors influencing results of RLT.
