In 1991, LTV Steel Mining Company decided to close an open pit taconite mine in northeastern Minnesota, using a passive treatment approach consisting of limiting infiltration into the stockpiles and wetland treatment to remove metals. Over 50 million metric tons of sulfide-containing waste had been stockpiled adjacent to the mine during its 30 years of operation. Drainage from the stockpiles contained elevated levels of copper, nickel, cobalt and zinc. Nickel is the major trace metal in the drainages, and prior to closure annual median concentrations ranged from 1.5-50 mg/L. Copper, cobalt and zinc are also present but are generally less than 5% of the nickel values. Median pH ranges from 5.0 to 7.5, but most of the stockpile drainages have pH greater than 6.5. Based on the chemical composition of each stockpile, a cover material was selected. The higher the potential a stockpile had to produce acid drainage, the lower the permeability of the capping material required. Covers ranged from overburden soil removed at the mine to a flexible plastic liner. Predictions of the reduction in infiltration ranged from 40% for the native soil to over 90% for the plastic liner. Five constructed wetlands have been installed since 1992, and have removed 60-90% of the nickel in the drainages. Total capital costs for all the infiltration reduction and wetlands exceeded $6.5 million, but maintenance costs are less than 1% of those for an active treatment plant. Since mine drainage problems can continue for over a hundred years, the lower annual operating costs should pay for the construction of the wetland treatment systems within seven years.

Factors of geological structure and occurrence of coalbeds, plus the resulting mining conditions, have required more care in preparing coals in Alabama than in most other districts almost since mining Alabama coals began. For this reason, literature on these coals may be interesting to those in areas where prime coals have been mined out, and thinner and less regular beds must now be exploited. This literature review has been arranged in order of subject matter. Some references have been listed more than once, but each separate review is limited to the material pertaining to the subject matter being discussed. For those seeking specific information, the authors have indicated which items repeat material and which items are most complete or specific. Geology, preparation, and carbonization of coal have been reviewed the most frequently.

Since the promulgation of the first Federal Asbestos Standard by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 1972, other federal agencies have modified the standard to better carry on their own unique missions. The instruments used to identify and measure asbestos, the sampling protocol, and the criteria used to define asbestos, have been modified to some degree. The Mine Safety and Health Administration regulates and controls asbestos dust in the mining and mineral commodity industries. However, crushed stone and processed ores contain mineral fragments that are frequently difficult to distinguish from asbestos. Mineral nomenclature, instruments for particle analysis, and sampling strategy must be accommodated to some degree to make asbestos control workable and meaningful. Precedent in other agencies has made consideration of these changes possible. Newly identified amphibole asbestos minerals have further complicated the agency?s regulatory charge. Changes in its Asbestos Standard are now being considered. Crushed taconite ore in the Eastern Mesabi highlights many of these issues. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. The roof of the Sishen cave is being mined in order to exploit 6.8Mt of high grade ore. The cavity is filled with quartzite backfill in order to support the roof in the event of collapse. The cave dips at approximately 37o, is 260m along dip and 70m along strike and has a total volume of 261,391m3. GPS and optical monitoring techniques were attempted to detect subsidence but proved to be impractical. The GroundProbe Slope Stability Radar (SSR) uses differential interferometry to measure sub millimetre movement in a rock face. The SSR was applied in a non production situation and detected subsidences of 38mm/day before visual signs of instability were detected. The rate of deformation detected was slowing as a result of the roof coming to rest on underlying backfill. Monitoring during production drilling detected a sudden subsidence of 18.6mm/hour which resulted in the evacuation of personnel from the area. Further inspection of data showed that the rate of deformation was slowing and production was allowed to continue without further incident. The SSR has helped dispel the fears of workers and has proven that subsidence can be accurately measured and delineated with the SSR.

The subject of many discussions and technical papers in the last 20 years has been the prediction of the well-bore pressure gradients that are required to induce or extend fractures in subsurface formations. The subject merits this attention because of the frequently recurring problems that arise from an inability to predict fracture pressure gradients. Encountered in several common types of operations in the oil industry are problems associated with the prediction of formation fracture pressure gradients. When wells are being drilled in both new and old fields, lost circulation is often a very troublesome and expensive problem. Complete loss of circulation has been disastrous in some cases. Many times, such disasters could have been avoided if techniques for calculating fracture pressure gradient had been employed in the well plans, and if casing strings had been set, and mud weight plans had been followed accordingly. In areas of abnormally pressured formations, the prediction of fracture gradients during the well-planning stage is extremely important. In fact, it is as important as the prediction of formation pressure gradients, which has received a great deal of attention in recent years. There are several published methods used to determine fracture pressure gradients. However, none of these methods appears to be general enough to be used with much reliability in all areas. In 1957, Hub-bert and Willis published a classical paper that included the development of an equation used to predict the fracture extension pressure gradient in areas of incipient normal fau1ting.l Overburden stress gradient, formation pore pressure gradient and Poisson's ratio of rocks were the independent variables that were shown to control fracture pressure gradient, the dependent variable. In 1967, Matthews and Kelly published another fracture pressure gradient equation that is different from that of Hubbert and Willis in that a variable "matrix stress coefficient" concept was utilized.3 Later the same year, Costley wrote about a similar idea.5 Goldsmith and Wilson used a least-squares curve-fitting technique and field data from the Gulf Coast area to correlate fracture pressure gradient with formation pore pressure gradient and formation depth.' They noted that the fracture pressure gradient increased with increasing depth while the pore pressure gradient remained constant. In each of these cases, the problem for which a solution was sought was to determine the bottom-hole pressure gradient required to initiate or extend a fracture. Results of the previous work show that fracture pressure gradient is a function primarily of overburden stress gradient, pore pressure gradient, and the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress. There is argument for a fourth variable in that in many cases breakdown fracture pressure gradient is greater than the fracture extension pressure gradient. This paper presents a compilation of physical properties of rocks from the Bushveld Complex. The database consists of more than 900 measurements each of thermal conductivity and density. The data are well distributed from localities around the Complex and most rock types are well represented. Thermal conductivity and density are shown to vary widely in the ranges 1.8-4.2 W m-1K-1and 2600-4200 kg m-3respectively. Although only 190 heat capacity measurements are available, this parameter is quite uniform for most rock types present, 800-900 J kg-1K-1, except for chromitite, which has a lower average, 750 J kg-1K-1. Rocks encountered in deep platinum mines are particularly well characterized and this has important implications for prediction of mine refrigeration requirements. The heat flux into a semi-infinite region with properties typical of the Bushveld Complex as a function of time is substantially lower than an equivalent model for the Witwatersrand Basin.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes a rock mechanics instrumentation program conducted in a shallow underground coal mine in central Illinois. This research program was designed to provide a basic understanding of the structural behavior of entry intersections. A wide variety of instruments and measurement techniques including hydraulic borehole pressure cells, multiple-point borehole extensometers, roof bolt compression pads, and overcoring were employed to monitor roof stresses, pillar loading, strata movement, floor heave, and bolt loading before, during, and after intersection development. A summary of intersection design theories, failure modes, and support techniques is included and instrumentation installation procedures and analysis methods are presented. The study identified two critical parameters that affect intersection stability: in situ horizontal stresses and geological discontinuities. Important design parameters for improving intersection stability are roof span and intersection geometry.

A study was undertaken to determine the effect of five industrial frothers on the relationship between entrainment recovery and water recovery. The experiments were conducted using a Batequip rectangular 60 liter steel cell which was run in parallel with the first cell in a copper/silver prefloat rougher circuit. The concentration of the frothers ranged from 2.5 g/ton to 8.4 g/ton. The experiments were repeated at three different froth depths. A power function was found to fit this relationship with no discontinuity in the relationship caused by the changes in frother type and concentration and froth depth.

Blasting is often required in urbanized areas to allow for economical execution of construction, demolition, and mining. Several examples of operations that require blasting in built up areas include: rock blasting for foundation and utility excavations; surface and underground mining for mineral extraction; and explosives demolition. Although explosives demolition is an engineering discipline, not at all like rock blasting, it still uses explosives for the felling of structures that have outlived their usefulness. Through the use of modem technology and implementation of extra safety precautions, explosives are used safely in congested areas to make the performance of critical work economical and feasible. This paper discusses several precautions required when undertaking various types of rock blasting and explosives demolition in congested areas. It also presents the adverse effects that must be considered when blasting in congested areas. The effects identified include flyrock, vibration and airblast, fumes, and non-elastic (permanent) ground deformations/overbreak. Measures for mitigating and controlling these adverse effects to provide on-site and public safety are presented.

Rhenium, molybdenum and tungsten are the elements demanded by high-end technologies. These metals are found in process solutions in forms of their oxyanions: ReO4-, MoO42- and WO42-. The later two can exist in forms of iso- and/or heteropolyanions. Basically all three metals demonstrate very similar chemical behavior in aqueous solutions. Unfortunately, in their mineral sources these elements commonly accompany each other, like pairs of rhenium-molybdenum or molybdenum-tungsten. Their economical separation is a challenging task.

"When confronted with the difficult decisions on advancing an exploration project to the feasibility and construction stages, it is important to know how various regions of the ore body will react in the milling and concentration processes. While bench scale test work is common and inexpensive, the results and information provided are somewhat limited due to the difficulty in accurately predicting the effects of recirculating middling streams or gradual changes in solution chemistry.Conventional Pilot Plants, processing 100 to 1,000 kg/hour of sample ore, provide the detailed engineering data required to develop a final process flowsheet and to size the equipment. They are, however, expensive to set-up and operate, and are really only viable for major projects that are well advancedIn the latter part of 1999, the Mineral Development Center at CVRD (MDC) purchased a new piece of mineral processing equipment which can run continuous flotation tests using drill core samples. To evaluate its performance, and to compare it with conventional testing methods, various types of flotation tests were carried out using two different types of copper ore. The limitations and advantages of open circuit and locked cycle bench tests, as well as the Mini Pilot Plant and the Conventional Pilot Plant were evaluated.Open circuit tests carried out at the bench scale only provide basic information. More complete and trustworthy information is obtained, in terms of the recirculation of flows and reaching a permanent and stable flotation regime, as the dynamics and complexity of the tests increases. The data obtained showed that the MPP’s metallurgical performance was equivalent to that of a conventional pilot plant."

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the information presented at the Sixth Mineral Waste Utilization Symposium cosponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, and the IIT Research Institute. Environmental scientists and engineers from nine countries participated in the symposium, which was held May 2-3, 1978, at the Chicago campus of IIT Research Institute. The 56 papers presented on the reclamation and recycling of mining and mineral wastes, municipal solid waste, industrial wastes, and scrap metal are summarized herein.

"A test surface Pulse EM(PEM) survey over a plunging massive sulphide lens, located in the Snow Lake area of Manitoba, has shown that it is possible to detect the body to a depth of 300 metres. Another surface survey in the Athabasca basin of Saskatchewan, clearly outlined a large, basement graphitic zone below 450 metres of sandstone cover. Deep detection of these conductive bodies was achieved by energizing large volumes of ground with a strong transmitted EM field. Such large fields also energize all other conductors present in the exploration area. Both of the above survey results indicate that more than one conductor is present. In such cases, detailed field coverage is required for accurate interpretation, and interpretational procedures that assume simple geometrical shapes should be applied with caution. In all cases geological and geophysical information should be coordinated in detail. The first test drill hole still has a high risk of missing the deep conductive body and two or three holes should be budgeted per target.Borehole Pulse EM surveys are now routinely used to help zero in on deep conductive targets. They are also proving effective in development drilling programs by outlining the edges of conductive bodies. The results of surveys from northern Quebec illustrate how they may provide more accurate shape and tonnage estimates."

The large increase in secondary industries in this country, during the war and post war periods, has caused a shortage of capacity for the production of merchant bar.To overcome this shortage, an expansion of rolling mill facilities has been undertaken by the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd. A small, but modern, merchant mill has been erected at Kwinana in Western Australia and a strip and skelp mill is under construction at Newcastle. The latter mill will roll strip and skelp at present being rolled by the Newcastle 10 in. Merchant Mill, enahling this mill to concentrate on merchant bar production.The Kwinana mill was installed to supply the Western Australian market. This state has a small population (approximately 658,000) and is not at present highly industrialised. It was necessary, therefore, to design a mill which would be capable of producing a wide diversity of sections and could be expanded as the demand increased. To begin with capital expenditure had to be kept within reasonable bounds. The design work for this mill, with the exception of a few specialised items of equipment, was carried out at Newcastle.All design work for the Newcastle mill was carried out by the lVIorgan Construction Co. of America. Although initially intended for rolling flat. products, the designers were asked to make the mill as flexible as possible, so that should the market for flat products decrease, this mill with additional equipment could undertake the rolling of medium sized sections.

THE work performed by the Royal Commission on Mining Subsidence is likely to prove of permanent value, less perhaps for the conclusions it has reached and for the recommendations it has based upon these than for the admirable exposition which it affords of the law concerning mining subsidence and of the legal status of the person who has suffered damage by reason of such subsidence, as also of him whose working has caused the damage. The Commission was appointed by Royal Warrant in the middle of 1925 and delivered its final report in the middle of 1927. The terms of reference to the Commission were as follows: "To consider the operation of the law relating to the support of the surface of the land, and of buildings or works on or under the surface, by underlying or adjacent minerals; to enquire into the extent and gravity of the damage caused by subsidence owing to the extraction of minerals and the incidence of the resulting liability; and to report what steps should be taken, by legislation or otherwise, to remedy, equitably to all persons concerned, any defects or hardships that may be found to arise in existing conditions."

This paper is a discussion of the causes of deflagration in cast blasting and a description of a project intended to demonstrate how changes in six critical parameters contribute to the deflagration chemical reaction. Control of these parameters is key to solving the nitrogen dioxide “orange smoke” problem. Preliminary results of an investigation into the development of a technology addressing the problem of atmospheric releases of nitrogen dioxide during cast blasting in surface mine operations are described. The project is funded by a $600,000 Small Business Innovative Research grant from the National Science Foundation and an $80,000 Abandoned Coal Mine Land Reclamation Program grant from the state of Wyoming. The presentation will address the measures required to control the blast chemical reaction so that it does not produce nitrogen dioxide through deflagration. Experimental blast data will be focused on a new shaped charge detonation system designed to instantaneously bring the powder column to maximum velocity of detonation (VOD), thus insuring efficient detonation of the entire colulnn.

In this work, preheating and roasting tests of pellets made from blends of Western Australia ultra-fine (WAU) magnetite concentrate and Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or Brazilian hematite concentrate were carried out. The results showed that pellets made from 100 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate possesses inferior preheating and roasting performance when preheating at 1050°C for 20 minutes and roasting at 1300°C for 40 minutes, the compressive strength of preheated and fired pellets is 502 N/pellet and 2313 N/pellet, respectively. When 40 per cent Chinese domestic magnetite concentrate or 20 per cent Brazilian hematite concentrate was blended with 60 per cent or 80 per cent WAU magnetite concentrate, the appropriate preheating temperature of the pellets are reduced from 1050°C to 950°C and 975°C, and also the firing temperature of two types pellets are decreased from 1300°C to 1250°C and 1280°C respectively. Moreover, the compressive strength of fired pellets is obviously improved up to 2746 N/pellet and 2630 N/pellet respectively. Microstructure analysis of the fired pellets made from 100 per cent WAU shows its poor growth of Fe2O3 grains, low interlinkage degree of hematite grains, small size of crystallised grains and high porosity of pellet; however, the fired pellets that blended with domestic magnetite concentrate or with Brazilian hematite concentrate have fully growth of Fe2O3 grains, closer interlinkage of hematite grains, lower porosity and stronger consolidation.
