"Air Products approached LAC Minerals in 1987 to initiate trials with pure oxygen in the leach circuit at several LAC facilities in Canada. This paper gives an overview of oxygen use and covers specific operating data from the Doyon and Terrains Aurifères mills near Val D'Or in northwestern Quebec. LAC also uses oxygen at the Macassa mill in Kirkland Lake, Ontario.In addition to the LAC facilities, oxygen is currently in use for test purposes at the Holt McDermott mine in Kirkland Lake, Ontario and the Camflo mine near Val D'Or.There are two requirements for oxygen in the cyanide leach mill. Firstly, oxygen is required in the familiar gold dissolution reaction as follows:(1) 4 AU (s) + 8 NaCN (aq) + 02 (aq)+ 2H 20(aq) - 4NaAu(CN) 2(aq)+ 4Na OH(aq)Of the reagents on the left side of the equation, the availability of gold is fixed by the ore in question. Obviously, water is available in excess, 1eaving cyanide and oxygen as the limiting constituents in the process. Most mills operate with an excess of cyanide, which is fairly closely monitored. Dissolved oxygen levels, however, are not normally watched very closely and find their own level based on the temperature, the availability of compressed air and the ability of the ore to consume oxygen.Typical D.O. levels are in the 3-8 ppm range, however levels less than 1 ppm are not uncommon for refractory ores.With pure oxygen, dissolved oxygen levels as high as 30 ppm can be achieved. (Figure #1). This greatly accelerates the kinetics of the leach reaction and may also shift the reaction further towards completion thus increasing gold dissolution slightly."

Three electrostatic field sensing proximity warning devices were tested using full-scale cranes and power line systems, a scaled model facility, environmental testing facilities, and theoretical/numerical analysis. The design objective of each device is to assist in safe crane operation near overhead power lines. Several design deficiencies (varying from device to device) were observed, including inadequate overlap in sensitivity ranges, utilization of vacuum tubes and electro-mechanical parts, temperature sensitivity and inaudible alarms. In addition, the testing showed major device limitations including sensitivity to boom orientations and length, polarization dependent responses, and unreliable operation in the presence of multiple power line circuits. The multiple power line circuit problem is intrinsic to electrostatic sensing devices. The remaining deficiencies and limitations are correctable within a state-of-the-art design. This investigation is not intended to evaluate the safety aspects or policy of utilizing proximity warning devices. Rather, the purpose is to determine the performance characteristics of such devices in relation to the criteria specified in proposed MSHA regulation 77.805-4 (i. e., the devices must alarm at a distance of 10 feet from the power line).

Red Dog mine is the world's largest Zn producer. The deposit consists of sulphide ore zones in sedimentary exhalative (sedex) deposits, and is characterized by the presence of multiple metals and multiple ore types. The objective of the case study is to characterize seven different minerals, Zn, Pb, Fe, Ba, sPb, Ag and TOC, within eight different rock types. Geostatistical models were constructed for each variable within the eight rock types, and subsequently assembled to give 40 realizations for six 25ft benches. The stepwise conditional transformation was used to account for the complex multivariate relations. In addition to reproducing the input data, histogram and variogram, the resulting models also respect multivariate relations locally and globally. This paper documents the methodology to construct these models. A thorough validation procedure was implemented. Comparisons with blasthole data show that the conditional simulations and the long-term models agree in expected value. The main advantages of the conditional simulations are (1) the explicit accounting of multivariate relations between the data in model construction, and (2) the ability to quantify variability and uncertainty at any scale. A small exercise comparing the profit from a kriged and a simulated model is also examined. Results show that the simulation approach showed a 3% increase in profit, relative to the conventional estimation approach.

Such numbers reinforce the need to invest in energy savings initiatives in order to produce more using less. ENERGY EFFICIENCY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN MINING OPERATIONS In addition, DOE, in its Mining Industry Energy Bandwidth Study, has identified huge potential for energy savings for the coal, metals and mineral industries. Even knowing the overall causes of energy waste and some potential tools for remediation, mining companies may struggle to apply such tools and get the desired results due to the following reasons: ? Limited staff ? Lack of accurate economic and investment analysis to justify energy savings projects ? Lack of knowledge to identify low or no-cost savings opportunities ? Internal competition for resources According to the workforce and talent management experts, the Talent Strategy Advisors, the demand for mining engineers is expected to exceed supply by 30% by 2013. Mining personnel are likely to be burdened with increasing and varied workloads with limited training. This will result in the need for automated and simple tools to support energy efficiency activities. Mining engineers will simply not have the time and resources to create such tools, collect and analyze the data to make decisions, and track results.

This paper is concerned with a study on the floor heaving in the transport road of the GLI Omerler Colliery in Tuncbilek-Turkey. This gallery has been opened at the depth of 200 m through the formation of marl in 4.6 m width and 3.5 m height in cross section. Floor heaving occurred up to 70 cm in height in maximum and caused severe problems in railway and band-conveyor transportation in the main road. In addition; after the current panel mined out, the shield support units could not be transferred to the new panel because of the deformation of roadway cross-section. The I-profile steel arch supports also sank into the weak floor rock. This situation has been studied by numerical analysis using the FLAC3Dfinite difference program in order to investigate the rock mass behaviour around the opening. The obtained outputs of the numerical model have showed consistency with the amount of floor heaving in the gallery at 200 m depth. A new gallery has been driven at the depth of 115 m and M4 longwall panel has just been taken to production. So as not to encounter with the same problems at 200 m depth, especially longwall face moving problem, various numerical models have been studied in order to keep the floor heaving in the acceptable limits required to move shield support units. By adding the solid oxalate acid powder into the solution of nickel chloride or its ammonia coordinated solution, the uniform compound particles were prepared and the precipitated particles were transferred to the mono-dispersed NiO particles by calcination. In this study, the various experimental conditions were investigated, the characteristics of the corresponding obtained particles were analyzed, and the formation mechanism of the particles was elucidated. It was found that the solid oxalate acid provided the solid-solution interface for the precipitation and induced the nucleation and growth of the product particles.

At Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd., Townsville, two reverberatory furnaces of 420 tonnes capacity are used to melt 210000 tonnes/year of copper for subsequent anode casting. When the refinery commenced production in1959, these furnaces were of 300 tonnes capacity. The original furnaces featured a silica brick hearth, magnesite and chrome magnesite side 'walls, and a sprung silica brick roof, but were unsatisfactory because of thelow refractory life and high costs. With continuous expansion in production and the incentive to increase furnace life and capacity the design of these furnaces has changed greatly since that time.The present furnaces feature all basic brick, a flat suspended basic brick roof, very extensive use of watercooled copper sections, and are of substantially increased (420 tonnes) capacity. Particular attention has been concentrated on high wear areas such as the taphole, side walls, and charging door jambs. Each furnace in its 24 h cycle, is charged, the copper melted, impurities skimmed off, metal "poled" prior to casting, and cast.The service condition during each of these operations is important in considering furnace refractory life.The improvements in operating practices and furnace 'construction which enabled the capacity of the furnaces to be increased are discussed. The life between major repairs to side walls has increased from 90 charges to300 charges.The scope for future improvement is considered and areas for development are suggested.

This report describes in detail three waterflooding projects and a pres-sure-maintenance project in Butler and Cowley Counties, Kans., that will be visited on the 1963 annual spring tour of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects are the flooding of five oil-producing horizons separately with injection water furnished by two water treating plants. Discussion of the individual projects includes information on their early history, the source and treatment of the injection fluids, oil production decline curves, and the results of water injection on oil production.

The oxidation of iron and nickel sulphide concentrates, and the dominant sulphide minerals which comprise them, has been studied under ignition conditions using thermogravimetry (fG). The concentrates were derived from various minesites and they showed differing tendencies to ignite. Ignition temperatures ranged from 416 to 488°C and the extents of reaction, measured at 500°C, varied from 64 to 88 percent. The reactivity of the least reactivematerial was improved significantly by grinding. Particles <63/lm showed 85 percent oxidation compared with 55 - 65 percent for particles >63/lm.Examination of the individual sulphide minerals revealed that these materials also have significantly different degrees ofreactivity and are subject to particle size effects. For particles <45/lm, the ignition temperatures were as follows:ò pyrite and violarite 380 - 385°C; pentlandite 425 - 430°C; and pyrrhotite 470 - 475°;ò for particles >90 /lm, the ignition values were: pyrite 395 - 400°C;ò violarite 430 - 435°C; pyrrhotite 540 - 545°C; and pentlandite 560 - 565°C.Using the data on the individual minerals it was possible to rationalise the differing degrees of reactivity of the concentrates. The role of the most reactive constituent in initiating the ignition reaction has also been discussed.Finally, the results of this work were found to compare. favourably with the behaviour ofthe concentrates in industrial and pilot-scale flash smelters.

A belt-wearable self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) manufactured by the CSE Corp. and designated the "SR-1OO" was evaluated for safety in the underground mine environment by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The evaluation consisted of laboratory tests on the chemicals contained in the unit and field trials to simulate the mine environment. This report summarizes the test results and compares the results with those from earlier tests with chemical and compressed oxygen self-rescuers. It was concluded that the new SCSR did not pose any different or more severe hazards than the earlier units. In view of the mine-proven safety record of the SCSR's now in service, no reason could be found to disallow use of the belt-wearable unit.

Paper presented at the conference on Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. Paper originally entitled: Processes in a newly discovered sulphide-PGE mineralisation in Norway. The Stormyrplutten mineralisation is hosted by a minor tholeiitic metagabbro of low-Ti composition intruded at a high level in the volcanic lithology. It is thought to be the subvolcanic counterpart of submarine basalts generated during an extensional episode of ensimatic arc evolution. The sulphide-PGE mineralisation occurs as stratabound pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite disseminations with average grades of 376 ppb Pd, 313 ppb Pt, 40 ppb Au, 0.5% Cu and 0.08% Ni in a deposit 15-25 m thick. Locally the PGE content peaks at 2 ppm over 1 m. Microprobe analysis isolated 14 different platinum-group minerals, dominated by sperrylite, temagamite and borovskite and occurring as 1-20 micron compounds embedded in the main sulphide minerals or along the sulphide/silicate grain boundaries. Mantle-normalised plots reveal strong depletion in Os, Ir and Ru and enrichment in Pt, Pd, Cu and Au. The general decrease in Pd and Pt and increase in S up through the stratigraphy is similar to PGE distribution in the Darwendale subchamber of the Great Dyke in Zimbabwe, and may reflect strong fractionation of Pd and Pt in favour of the first droplets of sulphide melt; two reversals of the trend at the 4 and 12 metre levels represent replenishment with fresh magma and repetition of the cycle. In contrast to the Darwendale system, Cu and Ni also show peak concentrations in the first-formed liquids and Pt appears to have fractionated more strongly into the sulphide melt than Pd

Longwall coal mine operators in the US are required to ventilate multi-panel longwall districts but may have little or no knowledge about what happens to the ventilation air between the inlet evaluation points (IEPs), bleeder evaluation points (BEPs), and bleeder fans. The effectiveness of bleeder performance can directly influence the ability of a ventilation system to remove and dilute coal bed methane emissions. Consequently, the performance of coal mine bleeders is an important aspect of underground worker safety. U.S. coal mining stakeholders have acknowledged their belief that the T- junction split at the longwall face tailgate corner is very important in controlling the distribution of ventilation air. The percentage of air directed inby towards the bleeders and bleeder fan and outby to the submains is often not well-defined and can vary over the life of a longwall panel. To obtain direct measurements of bleeder performance, a tracer gas, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), was released into the intake air stream along the panline of active longwall panels and in the bleeder/gob ventilation air inlets of an inactive panel. Tracer gas sampling was conducted underground using tube bundles attached to permissible vacuum pumps in the gateroads, former gateroads, and bleeders. Surface tracer gas monitoring was also conducted from operating gob boreholes and from bleeder fans. Testing was performed on multiple longwall panels which included various phases of longwall development and variable path lengths of ventilation air transport to bleeder fan installations. The applied methodology defines and describes coal bed gas pathways, rates, and volumes of movement at the bleeder/gob interfaces, and indicates flow rates for air/gas mixtures within these gobs. These findings are reported for three stages of longwall extraction using direct field-based measurements. Changes in the T-junction ventilation air distribution over the life of a longwall panel and its variable effect on panel ventilation airflow are discussed. These findings will assess the effectiveness of commonly applied ventilation strategies for improving air distribution and ventilation controls to meet statutory requirements and to achieve the desired ventilation patterns through multiple phases of longwall panel extraction.

A preliminary program dated April 25, 1974, was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (DEI) on research and development. for laboratory, field and other engineering studies on the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included discussions on the peculiarities of retorted shale materials to be investigated and discussions of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. The proposed research and development program was divided into eight work phases as follows: I Program Development. II Exploratory Laboratory Tests on Old U.S.B.M. Retorted Shale. "With the increasing demand for minerals, technologies to maximize mineral recovery are paramount to a mine’s economic success. Many mining process waters have the potential to form calcium-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, the solution to inhibit these deposits is the implementation of a chemical antiscalant program. This paper examines the application of a fouling analyzer to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scale in mining process streams. The fouling data can be used to compare antiscalant programs and to optimize antiscalant feedrates. Case studies validate the ability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery processes.INTRODUCTION The mining industry uses significant quantities of water. From quarrying, to crushing, to flotation, leaching, and refining, water is often the integral motive force to move slurries, separate or agglomerate fines, and extract and purify minerals. As well, water is used in a number of ancillary applications at mines, including dust suppression, gas scrubbing, and utility processes such as boiler, cooling, and waste water operations. For many processes, the quality of water being used is inconsequential. However, for certain processes, such as flotation, leaching, and desorption / stripping, water quality plays a key role in the ability of the operation to economically recover the target minerals. Dissolved solids such as calcium and magnesium salts can concentrate in process waters, exceed their solubility limits, and precipitate as scale on metal surfaces such as feed and transfer pumps, piping, and equipment. Some of the more common scales that form in mining operations include calcium carbonate (CaCO3, or calcite) and calcium sulfate (CaSO4, or gypsum), and to a lesser extent, calcium and magnesium silicate compounds. Any scale that deposits in a process stream will negatively impact mineral recovery, and increase the operational costs of the mine site. Whether it is acid washing a scaled heat exchanger in a carbon strip at a gold operation, replacing plugged emitter tubes in a leaching operation, or hydroblasting process lines in a scrubber unit, there are costs associated with labor, cleaning chemicals, repairs, and replacement parts. These costs pale in comparison to the potential costs of downtime and lost production, should the scale deposits occur in a process that is critical to the recovery of the target mineral."

The combustible volatile matter in coal mine roadway dusts (CVM) has been determined using x-ray backscatter techniques. The correlation between x-ray and chemical techniques is reasonably good for the 92 samples from collieries on the Bulli seam, and the maximum error expected at the maximum level of 11· 5 weight per cent CVM permitted in the N.S.W. Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended, is about ± 2·5 weight per cent. This x-ray technique can be used only when the combustible volatile content of the coal matter (cvm) varies within a limited range, and a separate calibration is required for each coal seam.Portable equipment based on a radioisotope x-ray source ahd digital ratemeter makes possible simple and rapid analysis, and with adaptation to use in coal mines should lead to much more comprehensive testing- ofroadways and hence improved overall prevention of coal dust explosions.

"Florida, the State that supplied 82 per cent of the phosphate rock sold in the United. States in 19284, has two producing areas - the hard-rock and the land pebble districts. Production of the hard-rock field, decreasing importance in recent years, is now confined to mines near Dunnellon, in Marion and. Citrus Counties. The land-pebble district, with a production of almost 80 per coat of the nation's requirements, is located, in Polk and Hillsborough Counties. In the land-pebble area the phosphate deposits - probably Pliocene in age, derived by marine action from underlying, older, phosphate-bearing formations - consist of beds of phosphate matrix, covered by practically barren sands and clays. The overburden, ranging in thickness up to 45 feet, is removed by hydraulic methods or by drag-line excavators. The matrix, ordinarily less than 25 feet in thickness, is mined by hydraulicking and is pumped to adjacent washing plants for beneficiation. The dried product of the washing plants is the Florida pebble rock that is sold in foreign as well as domestic markets.The beneficiation of phosphate ores in the land-pebble district of Florida has been largely limited in the past to the recovery of the coarser pebbles. By washing and screening the crude matrix a separation is effected at about 20 mesh (0.033 inch). The coarser material is the phosphate-rock product of the plant and the finer material is discarded. The amenability of the washer- rejects to treatment by other processes is being investigated. Of methods that may have some application to the treatment of the low-grade phosphatic sands that comprise the greater portion of the washer-rejects, gravity concentration has received some study.Laboratory experiments to determine the amenability of phosphate sands to gravity methods of concentration were first performed in October, 1927. Later, in the winter of 1928-1929, a further series of teats was made,. In these later tests phosphatic sands were concentrated by hydraulic classification, and. also by hydraulic classification followed by tabling. In these experiments concentrates with an analysis above the minimum grade of commercial phosphate rock (66 per cent bone phosphate of lime - B.P.L.) obtained. The recovery of the phosphate varied but was promising enough to warrant further study. A more comprehensive investigation was therefore outlined. This paper presents the results obtained from an investigation, of classification and tabling of phosphatic sands recently completed by the United States Bureau of Mines Su cooperation with certain Florida phosphate companies, the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, and the University of Alabama."

This report examines practical considerations in longwall support selection that have evolved from Bureau of Mines ground control research. The scope of discussion includes trends in support selection, analysis of shield designs, performance testing, and an examination of support and strata interaction theories and their relevance to in situ support loading. Application recommendations are made for two-leg shields. four-leg shields, and chock-shields. Two-leg shields account for 67 pct of the current active longwall installations and are used in a variety of applications. Automated control systems are likely to continue to grow in utilization. The next major change in shield design is likely to be the application of wider supports. The most effective method of performance testing longwall shields is by controlled displacement of the canopy relative to the base. Controlled force application does not control the load transfer through the shield and may not produce maximum loading in all support components. Theories of estimating support capacity based upon a detached roof block that must be maintained in equilibrium by the powered support are being challenged by concepts based upon the equivalent stiffness of the total ground supporting system.

A longwall mining operation went under a tall, self-supporting and free-standing wireless communication transmission tower. In anticipation of that the ground subsidence process might affect the transmission tower, the mining company took a proactive approach to mitigate the expected subsidence influences. The efforts include prediction of surface subsidence process at the location of the tower, assessment of stability, structural integrity and functionality of the tower structures, and design and implementation of mitigation measures. The intension of this paper is to demonstrate the techniques that can be used to assess and mitigate the subsidence effects on tall self-supporting and free standing tower structures.
