"A research program on modelling cement grinding circuits has been in operation at Hacettepe University, Ankara, for four years. It has concentrated so far on tube mill and air separator grinding circuits for cement clinker, with emphasis on plant sampling surveys, including axial sampling inside the tube mills. The methodology is to use plant data to build the models and to supplement this by laboratory data where necessary, for example the determination of breakage functions. The plant data come from comprehensive sampling surveys and so far 33 surveys of clinker grinding circuits have been carried out in 9 plants. The operating conditions have been• mill sizes – 3.2 to 4.8 metres diameter and 8.5 to 15 metres long,• mill feed rates – 46 to 158 tonnes per hour,• air flow through mills – 25000 to 125000 cubic metres per hour,• cement clinker work indexes – 10.3 to 18,• separator sizes – 2. to 3.1 metres diameter,• separator feed rates – 132 to 689 tonnes per hour,• separator speeds – 12.3 to 21 metres per second.The ball mill model is Whiten’s perfect mixing model and the separator model is the Tromp curve with a fish-hook. This paper emphasises on the importance of calculating the breakage rates and the discharge functions with three case studies at five different circuits which were selected for discussion because they show how particular features of circuit operation can be included in the general models. Size distributiongraphs are used to illustrate every aspect of the discussion.In case I the special emphasis on calculating the breakage rates and discharge rates separately is given in a high pressure grinding roll-ball mill-separator circuit. The tonnes of each size fraction in the mill and the calculated values of R/D, D and R are determined. The values of R per mw are also given to allow comparison with mills of other sizes. The circuit allows the comparison of the static type (V Sep) and dynamic type separators (SKS). Comparing the reduced efficiencies shows that the dynamic separator is slightly more efficient than the static one.In case 2 data are given from two compartment tube mills having the same diameter and the motor power but different ball size gradation. The breakage rate particle size variation of the second chamber of two mills indicate that having finer ball size distribution causes higher breakage rate values."

In Lusatia, lignite mining causes major disturbances on the landscape scale. Reclamation procedures are applied to recover the reconstructed landscape for different land use options. In this study we investigate soil physical properties of an agricultural reclamation/recultivation site directly after site restoration and the development of selected parameters within the first years after site restoration depending on varying recultivation strategies.The sandy substrates used for recultivation stem from depths of several meters. They are unstructured, free of recent organic matter and have high contents of calcium carbonate. During reconstruction and most of all during surface levelling with heavy crawlers, the substrate?undergoes high mechanical stresses. This leads to partly severe soil or substrate compaction, depending amongst others on substrate water content and mechanical stresses during site construction. We investigate the effect of different organic soil amendments, different crop rotations and partly subsoiling on the development of soil structure. We compare results of laboratory measurements directly after site construction before any reclamation measures had been applied to results we gained after three and four years of recultivation. The results show that after the earthworks are completed, the site is strongly heterogeneous in relation to mechanical stability, permeability for air and water, pore volume and bulk density. The results after three and four years show that the heterogeneity of soil physical parameters decreases. The selection of suitable crop rotations superimposes the affects of other reclamation measures, eg varying organic fertilisers or deep loosening.CITATION:Krnmmelbein, J and Raab, T, 2012. DURING an electron microscope study of the w phase in zirconium-base alloys,1 a stereographic technique was devised which allows the synthesis of high energy electron diffraction patterns from a single crystal containing several variants of a second phase. The technique will be described using as an example the w phase which forms in a bcc matrix. The w phase was suggested by Silcock et al.2 and Bagaryatskii et al.3 to have a hexagonal structure with (0001)111(111)^, [001]B//[110]B* *The subscripts B and 1 are used to refer to the bcc phase and one particular orientation of the w phase, respectively. and with cell parameters aw = v2aB, where a^ is the lattice parameter of the bcc struc-ture. Since there are four <lll>B directions there should be four orientations of the w phase. In approaching this problem the question to be answered is, "What reciprocal lattice vectors from the B phase and the four w variants lie in the particular reciprocal lattice plane of interest?" One may restate the question in the form, "What plane normals from the B phase and the four w variants lie in the particular reciprocal lattice plane of interest?" The question is answered and the desired diffraction patterns are plotted using the following stereographic technique. Knowing the cw/aw ratio (=0.613 for the as-quenched form of the w phase), a stereographic projection of plane normals from one w variant can be constructed relative to a cubic projection using the above orientation relations, with the direction of the projection along the [001]B direction, Fig. 1. This work aims to incorporate the Bof White Clay, from Boa Vista, Paraiba State, Brazil, as natural nanofiller in Ehylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) and obtain flexible films. Nanocomposite was obtained using a twin-screw extruder, and film formed using a blow extruder machine. The flexible film nanocomposite was characterized, by tensile tests, XRD, DSC and their properties were evaluated. The results showed a good interaction between the clay and the EVOH resulting in an increase of properties of films nanocomposites as compared to films neat polymer.

Early attempts to manufacture titanium aluminides using blended elemental powders, through powder metallurgical processes, have been obstructed due to serious swelling during sintering. Although the use of pre-alloyed powder can avoid this undesired expansion problem, there are limited commercial powder sources available. Therefore, in the present research, fundamental studies on the synthesis of dual-phase (? plus a2) Ti48Al intermetallic materials is undertaken, in particular assessing powder manufacture. In order to produce pre-alloyed powders, highly porous Ti48Al pieces are initially sintered from elemental Ti and Al powder blends, and subsequently pulverised into powders. The powder size is then further reduced by use of either dry or wet milling processes (i.e. shatterbox grinding, attrition, or ball milling). Among these methods, shatterbox grinding has shown the highest efficiency, with a slight mechanical alloying effect observed. The manufactured powder morphologies and phases, as well the sintered material, will be discussed.

OF the various minerals that occur in fibrous form known as asbestos, chrysotile is the variety most in demand for commercial uses, and, last year, over 683,000 tons of the various grades were produced in Canada and United States, exclusive of African and Russian production, which figures are uncertain. Production has not been able to keep up with the increased demand, and an acute shortage exists. Canada, Russia, and Africa are still the most important producers. However, Russia consumes most of its production at home and exports very little. The United States consumes over 60 pct of the total production and produces only about 4 pct of the total from deposits in Vermont and small quantities from Arizona. This paper will review mainly, some of the more recent developments concerned with the extraction and processing of this fibrous mineral for various industrial uses, such as textiles, insulation, building materials and brake linings.

This study outlines implemented tactics and results for community empowerment through participation in questionnaire surveys, educational programs, and discussion on sustainable sourcing from new critical raw materials (CRMs) projects. Utilising questionnaire surveys, including the Public Participation Geographic Information System (PPGIS), the research gathered public opinions from Estonia, Germany, Poland, and Zambia, receiving 1,068 responses. These responses addressed various social, economic, and environmental issues related to CRM projects. Feedback from educational courses with participants from over 25 nations and public events provided additional insights. The collected data and feedback offer crucial input for advancing sustainable and responsible CRM sourcing strategies in these regions.

The Red October Gold Mine, owned by Saracen Gold Mines Pty Ltd, is located approximately 80 km south of Laverton, Western Australia. It is considered to be of a similar nature to many of the Archaean granite-greenstone deposits in the Laverton Tectonic Zone, and presents as an intriguing and relatively young deposit in terms of developed structural and genetic models. Regional deformation events have been proposed for the area, and are relatively well accepted. The most important of these deformation events in the region were the D4b (WNW–ESE sinistral transpression) and D5 (ENE–WSW dextral transpression) which have been attributed to the main Au mineralising phases. At the local scale there appears to have been a rotation of the regional stress field to provide the optimum orientation of maximum principal stress for sinistral movement on the main shear zone.Fully coupled 3D finite element analysis (FEA) was used to simulate the geomechanical response of the system based on structural observations. The geomechanical modelling resulted in highlighting anomalous patterns of stress and strain and subsequent fluid flow as a result of the two main deformation events. The D4 simulation provided a good correlation with the known distribution of subsidiary structures on the main shear zone, and furthermore provided several geomechanical targets that suggested locations of additional subsidiary structures. The D5 simulation provided a great insight into the response of the main shear zone and known subsidiary structures also highlighting additional targets indicating potential for further mineralisation. These targets have since been followed up with a 732 m deep surface reverse circulation (RC) drill hole, resulting in the discovery of two high-grade shoots, with follow up testing currently planned for mid-2014.CITATION:McLellan, J G, Conn, J, Howe, D and Gates, K, 2014. [In the original Norris and Fay method for determining selenium, selenious acid is reduced by an excess of standard thicsulfate in accordance with the following reaction: H2Se03 + 4Na2S203 + 4HC1 = Na2SeS406 + Na2S406 + 4NaC1 + X20. (1) The excess thiosutfate is then back-titrated with standard iodine solution. The disadvantages of ouch a method are obvious. On an unknown sample, the quantity of thiosutfate required would be difficult to determine; a definite excess is required, but large back titrations would be undesirable. Inasmuch as thiosulfate is decomposed by acid, considerable error may be introduced in this method, the amount depending on the acidity, temperature, concentration of excess thiosulfate, duration of contact between thiosulfate and acid, and other factors, In a critical study of the Norris and Fay method, Coleman and McCrosky3/ show that the method is accurate to less than .1 part per thousand if the excess of this sulfate Is not greater than 5 ml. of 0.1 N solution (in 1.0 ml. of 0.x4 N sulfuric acid) whether the titration is made at 0° or 20°C. A greater excess produced unsatisfactory values at either temperature. Coleman and McCrosky regulated the excess thiosulfate by adding 5-ml. portions of thiosulfate solution followed by the addition of 1 to 3 drops of 2.5 percent potassium iodide in the presence of starch. If a starch-iodine blue color formed locally around the drops of potassium Iodide, the reduction of selenious acid was not complete. On stirring the solution, the local blue color fades and another 5-ml. portion of thiosulfate is added. When addition of potassium iodide fails to produce a local blue color, reduction of selenious acid is complete, and the excess thiosulfate is then back-titrated with standard Iodine solution. The number of equivalents involved in the reduction of selenious acid by either thiosulfate or iodide is the same, and therefore no correction need be made for the potassium iodide. This procedure is much better than the original Norris-Fay titration, but acidity and time would stilt be rather critical factors subject to variation with individual technique. Also, the method still requires the lose of two standard solutions, a rather undesirable factor from the standpoint of routine application.]

A perspective is presented of the steel plant sulphur distribution and elimination problem from coal to liquid steel ready for teeming, giving distributions of sulphur over a range of coke sulphur content, and some methods of sulphur control, in the blast furnace, external desulphuriza-tion between blast furnace and open hearth, distribution between fuel, slag, and metal, and methods and limitations of control of sulphur in the open hearth furnace. AS a part of the 1951 AIME symposium on sulphur in steelmaking, it was thought that a discussion of the distribution of sulphur throughout the whole series of operations, from coal and ore to finished steel ingots, might have some value in giving a perspective on the whole problem. The following discussion is an attempt to present such an overall picture. The order is that of the actual plant operations, beginning with a very brief consideration of the coking process. Sulphur in Coal and Coke Since by far the largest source of sulphur entering the steelmaking cycle is in the coal used to make coke for the blast furnace, it would seem reasonable to eliminate some of it, either from the coal, or the coke, or during the coking process. This has appeared impracticable up to the present, at least, for two main reasons: the low activity of the organic sulphur in either coal or coke, and because of price limitations involved in treating a low cost material such as coke. A variable portion, usually M or less, of the sulphur is present in coal in the form of pyrites or similar compounds, and a large part of this sulphur may be removed in the coal washery. Most of the sulphur, however, is normally present as "organic" sulphur, intimately associated with the coal structure. Its distribution prevents any separation by mechanical means. Its low activity makes improbable &apos; any rapid chemical removal, although hydrogen will remove sulphur from both coal and coke. Thus, prolonged recirculation of coke oven gas in the coking process would tend to leave a smaller percentage of the total sulphur in the coke residue. Table I shows a typical distribution of sulphur from coal into products in the coking process. As the sulphur in the coal increases, the sulphur in the coke tends to increase in about the same proportion. Sulphur in the Blast Furnace The best picture of the situation in the blast furnace is provided by a sulphur balance of raw materials entering, and of products leaving, the furnace. The difficulties in accurate weighing and sampling of the variable solid materials entering this process, and the number of hours required for the raw materials to descend through the furnace under variable operating conditions, make it difficult to obtain an accurate balance. However, balances made over periods of weeks or months tend to average out some of these uncertainties. Table I1 presents three typical sulphur balances similar to a number that the writers have calculated. In most of these the slag volume calculated from the sulphur balance is, in some instances more, and in other instances less, than the value corresponding to the best input and output balances of the other slag constituents (lime, silica, alumina, etc.). Probably the greatest source of error in these calculations is the sulphur content of the slag. Despite some possible inaccuracies the balances of Table II show rather definitely the following points: 1—That 87 to 95 pct of the total sulphur input is in the coke and 95 to 97 pct of the total sulphur output is in the slag. Also, that if any sulphur leaves the furnace with the gas it is relatively small, amounting to a possible 1 pct or less. 2—At the lower sulphur coke level of 0.86 pct the total amount of sulphur charged is 15 Ib of sulphur per ton iron increasing to 26 lb per ton at the higher sulphur, intimately associated with the coal struc-rare burdens containing sulphur-rich ores will the total sulphur burden fail to be nearly proportional to the content in the coke used. 3—The 7 to 9 pct of the total sulphur input from the limestone of furnaces B and C is due to the relatively high sulphur content of the stone, 0.226 and 0.265 pct, respectively. In the case of furnace A, the sulphur content of the limestone was only 0.06 pct which resulted in only 3 pct of the total sulphur input coming from this source. Em vista da crescente geração de efluentes contendo metais, busca-se por técnicas sustentáveis capazes de recuperá-los, devido à toxicidade e ao valor econômico agregado. Os metais ainda contribuem com a poluição dos recursos hídricos. Desta maneira, o presente trabalho investiga a adsorção dos metais presentes num efluente produzido na mineração (licor) do níquel, através da resina quelante de troca iônica Dowex XUS43605. Os experimentos foram realizados em bateladas, variando pH, para verificar a captação pela resina do alumínio, cobalto, cromo, cobre, ferro (III), magnésio, manganês, níquel e zinco presentes no licor. A concentração dos metais na solução foi obtida pela técnica de espectrometria de fluorescência de raios-x por energia dispersiva (EDX). Os resultados mostram a capacidade de remoção dos metais pela resina, destacando 83% de adsorção do cobre e 7% do níquel, considerando 2,0 pH e tempo de contato 2h. Portanto, o estudo demonstra que a resina de troca iônica pode ser utilizada para tratar efluentes, em especial, de mineração.

This paper describes an advanced oxy-fuel combustion technology for re-melting aluminum that significantly reduces energy consumption and emissions. This oxy-fuel combustion technology developed by Jupiter Oxygen is a patented process for combustion of fossil fuels with pure oxygen while excluding air, thereby creating an undiluted high flame temperature and increased efficiency for process heating in industrial furnaces. This unique process has led to improved heat transfer and longer residence time while maintaining the same process temperatures as with air combustion. The energy efficient combustion process allows aluminum companies to operate at a substantially lower cost due to a dramatic fuel savings of up to 70% for natural gas and waste oil (1). The results of more than 10 years of day-to-day experience utilizing the Jupiter Oxygen Corporation oxy-fuel combustion technology licensed to Jupiter Aluminum Corporation in the aluminum re-melting business are discussed.

While there could be as many directions on regulations as there are viewpoints surrounding the asbestos controversy, there are a few basic criteria that generally will influence government thinking, namely: - their definition of the problem to be regulated, - their interpretation of the scientific evidence available to them, and - their sensitivities to the views of, and the implications for, various interest groups in society. Clearly, different assessments of these criteria by various governments will lead to differing regulatory regimes. The consequence, of course, is a patchwork of non-conforming regulations among nations, with all that thin implies for the distortion of international trade and the unsettling of international relations. I would therefore argue that when governments are examining regulatory action, they should explicitly take into account their common interests in stable and cordial international relations, and when possible, efforts should be made to ensure that movement on regulation is at least, in principle, in accord with the general views of the international community.

The Bureau of Mines studied pressure-buildup data from a number of California gas wells to determine if the reservoir properties calculated from these data correlated with field-observed reservoir properties. Pressure-buildup curves from 24 wells showed distinct changes in slope, indicating changes in permeability of the reservoir rock. Calculated distances from the wells to indicated permeability changes were in fair agreement with distances deter-mined in the field. Pressure-buildup curves from three wells had more than one distinct change in slope, indicating multiple permeability changes. Thus field data supported the theoretical relations used to calculate reservoir properties from pressure-time relations measured in gas wells.

"Sensor-based ore sorting is on its way to establish as a standard option for physical separation. The increasing number of installations in coal, iron ore, industrial minerals and hard-rock metal mining segments underlines the technological and financial potential that is beginning to be untapped. The Ma’aden Phosphate installation with 1.650 t/h sensor-based ore sorter feed sets a new benchmark for the possible capacity of stationary installations. Besides stationary installations, including multiple sorters parallel in different size ranges and multiple stages, containerised semi-mobile plants are applied. These offer two advantages, first being the reduction of transport costs when applied close to the mining face. The second is that semi-mobile systems enable processing of tens of thousands of tonnes of ore in a piloting phase with an approximate duration of 0.5 to six months, verifying the results laboratory mini-bulk tests on 5–10 tonnes of sample. This is especially important for low-grade metal ores because of the inherent Fundamental Sampling Error, as well as the Grouping and Segregation Error. The paper elaborates the results achieved within the I2MINE project, treating polymetallic ore at the Boliden Concentrator in Sweden.INTRODUCTIONSensor-based ore sorting (SBS) is becoming a standard option for physical separation, applied in all segments of mineral production. The Umm Wu’al project sets the bar for stationary SBS installations with 1,650 t/h feed (TOMRA, 2015). TOMRA Sorting Solutions has finalised an agreement in cooperation with Outotec to supply Outotec-branded sorting solutions for the mining and metallurgical industry (TOMRA, 2014). Especially for low-grade hard rock metal ores, an interdisciplinary approach is necessary applying experts for all aspects of mineral production. Due to the impact on the whole process stream, it is important on the end user side to have high level managerial support and involve all disciplines to ensure that all stake holders are involved in the analysis."
