IT has been said the British Empire was built on British Coal. In all the postwar planning for Great Britain the necessity for producing cheap coal and the prosperity of the coal industry are given first consideration. On Jan. 23, 1945, there was released in London a "Report to the Colliery Owners" which had been awaited with great interest. This was entitled "A Plan for Coal" and was the recommendation of Robert Foot, chairman of The Mining Association (Colliery Owners), prepared at their request. Presentation of the "Plan" at this time is particularly significant as it is an answer to the demand for nationalization of the coal industry by the Labour Party and at the same time is a carefully considered program for postwar reconstruction, prosperity, and stability. In the words of Mr. Foot, If the coal industry for the first ten years after this war is to find itself in a situation similar to the one it occupied for the ten years following the last war, with its record of disputes, strikes, stoppages, short-time working, unemployment, and, with it all, a completely insufficient margin of profit, and all the insecurity and instability in our basic industry that was brought with them, it is goodbye to any real prospect of full employment, social security, and high standard of living. To present an elaborate review of the conditions which have brought to a crisis the unfortunate situation in the British coal industry is here unnecessary, but certain of the salient points

Glencore, in collaboration with Cascadia Scientific, conducted a study to improve the haul roads at the Antapaccay mining operation. The study utilized Cascadia's SmartRView platform for data collection, complemented by precise instrumentation installed on both Komatsu and Caterpillar haul trucks Antapaccay worked closely with Cascadia's Data Scientists,employing various statistical methods to analyze the data and identify potential enhancements to the haul road design. The study utilized Cascadia Scientific's heat mapping tool to identify road segments with high fuel intensity . As a result, four main road segments were identified for improvement.

Tungsten ingots with and without small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium were prepared by conventional powder-metallurgy techniques and hot-rolled to 0.001-in.-thick sheet. The ingots were rolled three different ways: I) initially cross-rolled, then straight-rolled; 2) straight-rolled, and 3) straig-ht-rolled, then cross-rolled. Total reductions were 99.8 pct. Samples of the sheet were annealed, in vacuo, at temperatures from 1200" to 2200°C. Substructures and textures were determined by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The doping agents were found to form particles of mullite (Al,Si,O,,) which, on rolling., appear to form strings of particles aligned parallel to the rolling direction. These strings of purticles are associated with an increase in the recrystal-lizution temperature from 1400°C for undoped sheet ThE addition of small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and potassium to tungsten has a profound effect on the grain structure of drawn and recrystallized wire.'" The grains generally do not occupy the entire cross section of the wire and have lengths many times the wire diameter. The grain boundaries are, in general, nearly parallel to the wire axis and have long ''fingers" projecting one into the other as may be seen in Fig. 1, a longitudinal section of recrystallized doped wire. When unsuitable additions or no additions are made or the wire is not sufficiently reduced during draw- to 2000°C for doped sheet. The particles also limit lateral grain growth while allowing growth parallel to the rolling direction. This results in the formation by primary re crystallization of large highly elongated grains of specific preferred orientation. The undoped sheet recrystallized to small equiaxed gains. The preferred orientations of the large grains were determined from axis density plots to be (113) (691). (0i3) (362), (116) (304) types for the initially cross-rolled then straight rolled material. These orientations are similar to the orientations of the large elongated grains in doped and heavily drawn tungsten wire. The nucleation of the large grains appears to occur by recovery of certain of the polygonized regions of specific orientation, followed by strain-induced boundary migration.

In this work the extractive and selective capacities of solvent extraction synergistic systems to recover nickel and cobalt were evaluated. The liquor used was from the high pressure acid leaching process (HPAL). Initially the industrial liquor, processed from lateritic ores, was analyzed to identify the concentrations of the metals. Experiments of synergistic solvent extraction were performed later. The extraction liquid-liquid was carried out with a mixture of Cyanex 272 (CY) and Ionquest 290 (IQ) extractants. The process was executed with the temperature of 65 ºC, pH of 5.2 and the ratio aqueousorganic 2:1. Systems of 80% kerosene and CY 20%, CY 16% - IQ 4%, CY 12% - IQ 8%, CY 8% - IQ 16%, CY 4% - IQ 16%, IQ 20% were studied during 20 minutes. The results of this paper showed that the mixture of these two extractants doesn’t improve significantly the recovery of nickel and cobalt from liquor.

Where gold is present in a finely disseminated form within sulfide particles, the porosity and surface area of the calcined material strongly influence leaching since they control the penetration of solution inside the gold-bearing grains. On the basis of a stability diagram for the Fe-O-S in the temperature range of 400 to 750aC, the expected sequence chemical transformations associated with the oxidation of pyrite is discus-sed. By using analytical techniques which include scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and BET gas adsorption, the chemical and structural changes experienced by auriferous pyrite-arsenopyrite concentrates and pure pyrite samples are studied under an oxidizing roasting atmosphere of com-position 80% N + 20% O2 in the temperature range of 450 to 750°C. The results indicate that as the roasting temperature increases, the surface area of the calcines decreases sharply after a maximum value attained at about 450-500°C. SEM micrographs show that the needle-shaped tips which characterize the surface of the oxide product become wider and the size of the pores between them is decreased when the roasting temperature is in-creased from 550 to 750°C. This effect suggests that the formation of a more "closed" hematite product at higher temperatures is due to sintering associated with a faster growth and crystallization of the oxide. A strong correlation is shown between increasing roasting temperature and increase in gold lost in cyanidation tailings, an effect which may be partly attributed to the loss in surface area of the calcines.

High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) as an efficient grinding technology plays a major role in mineral processing plants. Investigating the effects of this technology on different parts of mineral processing circuits reveals this technology’s capability. In this paper, HPGR grinding effects on an iron ore beneficiation circuit, in comparison with conventional crushing systems were studied. A representative feed sample was taken from an iron ore beneficiation plant, then crushed to minus 6 mm in a laboratory by two methods: HPGR and cone crusher, and finally a concentrate plant circuit was simulated. Plant simulation was performed by doing laboratory tests consisting of grinding, magnetic separation, flotation and filtration on HPGR and cone crusher products, respectively. According to comminution tests results, in particle sizes smaller than 6 mm, a cone crusher product is coarser than an HPGR product. Also, the Bond ball mill work index of the HPGR product was 10% less than the crusher product. Therefore, based on the Bond formula in applying HPGR, ball mill power consumption decreased by 12%. After ball milling to minus 100 microns, magnetic separation tests results showed that the recovery of the cone crusher circuit output was 90.8% and the product Fe grade was 66.4%. For the HPGR circuit these figures were 87.6% and 67.3%, respectively. Therefore, by using an HPGR, a higher Fe grade of the final concentrate was achieved. A flotation test was then performed on the magnetic separation concentrate, where the results showed that the crusher circuit recovery and the sulfur grade of the product were 96.5% and 0.192%, respectively; whereas the HPGR circuit recovery was 97.2% with a sulfur content of 0.185%. Findings revealed that flotation performance in the HPGR circuit was more efficient than the crusher circuit. Vacuum filtration tests on concentrate produced through the HPGR circuit resulted in a moisture content of 12% that was 2% higher than the crusher circuit’s concentrate in the same condition. Stability of some potential unstable blocks in the left bank slope of Baihetan hydropower station is evaluated in this paper using the three-dimensional (3D) limit equilibrium method. The Baihetan hydropower station is in the downstream of Jinshajiang River, China. The geological condition in the river valley is complex, and many large discontinuities are detected in the slope of the two banks. As a result, much attention should be paid to the stability of the slope in the feasibility study stage. Because the left bank slope is an oblique consequent one, we mainly focus on the slope stability analysis in the left bank. Comprehensive geological exploration is conducted in the studied area and the detected discontinuities are well researched. By building a 3D geological model of the left bank slope, three potential unstable blocks which are close to the dam site are detected. An irregular wedge analysis method is then used to calculate safety factors of the three blocks under three conditions, which are natural condition, rainfall condition, and seismic condition, respectively. It is found that the safety factors of the block 1# and the block 2# are quite low when compared to the suggested values. Extra care must be exercised when excavating the slope near the block 1# and the block 2#. A preliminary reinforcement is also suggested.

Randgold Resources’ Loulo-Gounkoto Complex is one of the largest gold mining operations in Mali, West Africa. The mine, which is situated on the western border with Senegal, treats more than 4 Mt/a of ore through a conventional three-stage crushing and ball milling circuit followed by a carbon-in-leach plant. Ore supply is achieved by a combination of open pit and underground mining, with the majority of the ore supply sourced from the Gara and Yalea underground mines situated approximately 2 km and 6 km respectively from the gold plant.In 2011, Randgold Resources commissioned Golder Associates to perform an evaluation study for providing structural backfill to both the Gara and Yalea underground mines using the current gold plant tailings. The test work performed as part of the evaluation study concluded the need for a tailings cycloning and dewatering facility capable of producing slurry at a solids concentration of 65 per cent with a particle size distribution that had minimum 25 per cent passing 20 µm and less than 5 per cent of -5 µm material. Tailings desliming was required to ensure a consistent feed quality to the paste preparation plants and to ensure that the system would be capable of handling variation in the feed composition from the gold plant.WorleyParsons, previously TWP Projects, was contracted by Randgold Resources to complete the engineering design for the slurry preparation plant, whilst Golder Associates was retained to complete the engineering design of the two paste preparation plants.This paper discusses the test work, design considerations and engineering design of the slurry preparation plant, termed the ‘intermediate plant’, as well as all ancillary facilities required for the delivery of the deslimed slurry to the paste preparation plants located at the two underground mines.CITATION:Swanepoel, M, du Toit, G and Gillot, P L, 2014. As mudanças no plano estratégico de uma organização reverberam por todos os seus setores, gerando demandas de alinhamento estratégico. Entre estes setores estão os de planejamento e programação da manutenção. O presente estudo de caso descreve uma iniciativa de alinhamento estratégico realizada pela equipe de planejamento de manutenção da unidade Ubu da Samarco Mineração S/A, uma empresa de mineração e pelotização de minério de ferro, localizada no estado do Espírito Santo. A partir de uma revisão na estratégia corporativa foram derivados a missão, visão e valores da equipe. Esses por sua vez, serviram de base para uma revisão dos processos de trabalho e para a definição de ações de melhoria. Por fim foram estabelecidos indicadores para mensurar a realização da visão. Os resultados apresentados por esses indicadores comprovam que as equipes de planejamento podem obter e demonstrar resultados significativos através de técnicas elementares de planejamento estratégico.

This paper's aim is to demonstrate, by reviewing findings and conclusions of earlier authors and through recording and interpreting the outcome of recent laboratory study of the ores, that the ores around the Gem stocks are metamorphosed equivalents of common siderite-sulfide ores far from the stocks, as was first proposed by Hershey (1912, 1913). That is, all the ores probably have the Precambrian age of 1250 million years reported by Long et al. (1960). Those near the Gem stocks, however, were extensively metamorphosed in Cretaceous time during the emplacement of stocks so their resemblance and relation to other veins in the district are camouflaged.

"Rare earth elements have unique properties because of the special electronic structure. In this paper the improvement of refractory material performance by the light rare earth oxides was introduced. The experiments showed that adding a bit of rare earth oxide could obviously improve the performance of the refractory material. INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, refractory materials are widely applied in the steel smelting process as a ladle lining material. In China, although the total production of fire-proof material exceeds normal demand, but the quality and variety of fire-proof material still have a big gap with world advanced level. A number of refractory products need to be imported from abroad. With the rapid development of domestic steel production, the ladle lining with refractory is gradually running after the world advanced level on production technology, production variety, and quality level. It replaces some imported products meeting the needs of the development of the iron making production. Therefore, there is an important significance to research on solving the problems of the ladle refractory reasonably and avoiding or reducing blind and not proper use of the imported refractory ( Jing, 2007).On the other hand, rare earth oxide has some special excellent properties. Firstly, they are very good refractory materials with their high melting point;Next, they have good resistance to water and alkali resistance function;Thirdly, it is easy for rare earth oxide to generated composite oxide reacting with other metal oxide,achieving the purpose to improving the material properties (Xu, 1978; Diao, 1979). China has a variety of rare earth resources,and rare earth resources is more advantageous in Baotou,taking up about 36 percent of world reserves,which is the world's top of rare earth mineral. In recent years the rare earth products output has risen sharply and many varieties and specifications have appeared. So it is necessary to study the new field of rare earth compound to open up new markets. Thus, it has a very vital significance to promote the further development of rare earth industry, adjust the rare earth products structure, ease the contradiction between supply and demand, and improve refractory products quality and grade in order to better serve the main body production.I In this paper, the experiments are mainly for 210 tons of Al2O3-MgO style series refractory materials belong to ladle lining bag from Baotou Iron & Steel Group Corporation Sheet Factory. The improvement to the effect of refractory material performance is explored by using light rare earth oxides as additives."

A casca de arroz é um resíduo amplamente gerado no mundo, é o principal subproduto do beneficiamento do arroz, e tem sido utilizada como biomassa para geração de energia, o que reduz o impacto ambiental causado pela destinação. No entanto, gera outro resíduo, a cinza de casca de arroz (CCA). A CCA é composta basicamente por sílica e carbono. Sendo os elementos traço mais comumente encontrados o sódio, potássio, cálcio, magnésio, ferro, cobre, manganês e zinco. Pelo elevado teor de sílica, é um resíduo com potencial para ser transformado em coproduto para diversas indústrias, porém, dependendo da aplicação pode ser necessária maior pureza. Assim, diversos estudos utilizaram a lixiviação ácida para reduzir o teor de contaminantes ou melhorar propriedades da CCA. Neste sentido, este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o beneficiamento de uma CCA residual através do processo de lixiviação ácida. Para isso, foram utilizados diferentes ácidos/concentrações, relações CCA/ácido e tempos de contato. Após estes testes utilizou-se análise elementar por FRX para caracterização química. Os resultados mostraram que o ataque ácido foi efetivo na redução ou eliminação de Fe2O3, K2O, CaO, P2O5 e ZnO para todos os ácidos e concentrações testadas. Sendo que as diferentes concentrações não afetaram a eficiência de remoção.

The E-Power Pipe technology was originally developed for the trenchless installation of protective pipes and pipelines of 10" to 28" diameter, over long distances of more than 4,000 ft. The twostage process combines elements from Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and microtunnelling technology. A microtunnelling boring machine (MTBM) excavates the borehole using a specially designed, temporary jacking pipe. A Rack & Pinion jacking frame pushes the equipment during the pilot bore and pulls in the prefabricated pipe string in a second step. The slurry microtunnelling machine is equipped with a jet pump, creating the so-called AVNS machine type. A new generation of small hard rock cutting wheels complements this considerable achievement for the tunnelling industry

For the past year, Lowphos Ore Ltd. has been operating two desliming hydroseparators on a fully automatic basis. Automatic operation is achieved by sensing the position of the silica-magnetite interface and automatically controlling the jet water addition to maintain a desired interface position. The system further provides automatic control of the underflow pump speed in order to assist in maintaining interface position when an <Ore change occurs. Interface position is maintained at 12 inches below the surface and is -controlled within plus or minus one inch. Metallurgical unit recovery is held above 98.5 per cent, and a 10 to 12 per cent increase in concentrate grade is normally achieved.

"It is common in rock engineering practice to characterize the triaxial strength of intact rock by using only data samples of small size. Practical guidelines such as ASTM support such sample sizes. In this paper, we investigate the reliability of the Hoek-Brown strength criterion estimated from such samples. For this purpose, we use an unusually large published set of triaxial strength data to randomly select a large number of data samples of small size to simulate the situation that frequently encounters in practice. The samples are generated with different arrangements with regards to the confining pressure. We fit the Hoek-Brown criterion to each of these samples, obtain estimates of strength parameters and compare them to those obtained from the complete data set. Our analysis suggests that estimates based on small samples are not reliable and can lead to both over- and under-estimation of strength.Additionally, we use these small samples to investigate the statistical methods for obtaining design values of strength as suggested by limit state design standards such as Eurocode 7. We show that, if used in conjunction with small samples, these methods do not guarantee a safe estimate of strength and in many cases lead to highly over-conservative estimates.We present a potential solution to this problem by augmenting the small data sets with Bayesian informative priors to give much more reliable estimates of strength. We conclude with suggestions for the development of informative prior distributions."

"While the mine developer looks for bigger and better orebodies in countries offering lower risks to development capital, the opera-tor of existing mines is looking for bigger and better ways to use his existing resources. Mining operations today utilize a variety of stand-alone systems for planning and managing their operations. In both small and large mines, payroll, accounting, inventory, planning, and engineering requirements are met using a combination of manual and computer-based systems.Technical advances and new enabling technologies are changing how mines are doing business. PC-based systems are allowing small operations to join the larger mines in using advanced computer-based systems. Advanced monitors are being used in maintenance to track, predict and correct the health of production equipment. Production monitoring systems are used to measure the performance of operating equipment and personnel in real time. This detailed information on how much, where, when, and by whom is being used for proactive management and planning. Ultimately, this information can be used to optimize and control the machines’ activities, eventually leading to robotic and autonomous operation of mining equipment.As the use of technology increases in mining, specific information objectives are being met but other problems are being created. The life cycle of technology is small, and as current systems are replaced by newer ones, integration problems and additional end-user training are created. In addition, onboard monitoring systems can create large volumes of data, data which are frequently archived without being analyzed. Mine operators are also duplicating efforts applying new technologies in an effort to be more competitive, but in doing so are creating interfaces which are only compatible with their own facilities. As system development moved from the centralized mainframe computer to the PC environment, the fragmentation of these systems became more pronounced.To efficiently continue in adapting and utilizing advancing technology, the mining industry needs to develop a system architecture that readily integrates as many sub-systems as possible. This will provide a framework for existing system integration and design guide-lines for future development. The Total Mining System (TMS) concept will allow a network of stand-alone functional modules to be readily integrated with minimal effort. This paper will discuss some of the current technologies cur-rently in use in some surface mine operations.In addition, a description of the information system and communications requirements that will be needed to integrate these components in the future, will be discussed."

Asbestos is a broad term embracing a number of fibrous silicate minerals. These minerals look extremely fragile, yet their fibers have a tensile strength equal to that of piano wire. Chrysotile asbestos is the only mineral that can be woven into cloth, and its fibrous structure is, if anything, even more amazing than its remarkable ability to withstand heat. Because of its unique physical properties asbestos has achieved great industrial importance, and more than 3,000 current uses are known, ranging from use in the kitchen to use in space missiles. Because their minuscule fibers are eminently respirable, asbestos minerals have also found their way into the lungs of humans, where they apparently produce serious biological effects such as asbestosis and lung cancers. 1, 2,3 Because of both their usefulness and their hazardous properties, these minerals have attracted a good deal of attention from research workers during recent years. For example, the surface properties of asbestos minerals have been studied by many investigators. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 However, even for the important mineral chrysotile, the literature data are more or less conflicting. Pundsack4 measured a PZC (point of zero charge) of 10.1; Martinez and Zucker5 measured 11.8; Chwastiak reports 10.8-11.0; and Raddick measured three sepa-rate apparent PZCls at about pH 8.3, 10.0 and 10.9. More recently Trivedi8 reports 10.11. Naumann and Dresher9 have studied surface charge enhancement of chrysotile by metal ions, and describe how the mineral reacts with contaminantions. In the present paper, the mode of dissolution of magnesium and hydroxyl ion from asbestos minerals placed in water was studied by kinetic experiments involving rate at which these items leave the minerals. Also, some study was made of interaction between dissolved species.
