The Bureau of Mines has investigated the surface charge of amphibole asbestos fibers and nonasbestiform cleavage fragments, as part of the Bureau's fundamental studies to provide new knowledge on the physical and chemical properties of the amphibole minerals. Microelectrophoresis was used to measure the electrophoretic mobilities, in water, of particles from six asbesti-from amphiboles and seven nonasbestiform amphiboles over the pH range of 5 through 9. The particles generally ranged in size from 2 to 5 µm wide by 10 to 30 µm long. The isoelectric point was determined for four of the minerals, and values were found to be between pH 3.5 and pH 5. The minerals studied had zeta potentials that generally ranged from -25 to -so mv in neutral solution. Attachment of colloidal positively charged AgI was also studied as a means of determining surface charge. Scanning electron microscopy of amphibole particles that had been in contact with aqueous AgI showed equal attachment of AgI to asbestos fibers and to cleavage fragments; the extent of AgI coating was the same for both. The electrophoretic mobilities of asbestos fibers were essentially the same as those of elongated cleavage fragments of the same aspect ratio (particle length divided by width). Blocky particles from both asbestiform and nonasbestiform specimens had lower mobilities.

The Rosebery Mine on the west coast of Tasmania is a world class polymetallic base metal deposit, containing six major minerals: galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, gold, silver and pyrite. This resource has been exploited for nearly a century, yet a reliable estimate of the reserve continues to present a challenge.Over the past twenty years, the operation has changed from relatively low productivity cut and fill timber-support scraper mining, to higher productivity bulk mechanised open stoping. At the same time, economic constraints have changed and grades have fallen, which have increased the pressure to refine the resource/reserve estimating processes. This paper compares the restrictions of the polygonal section method of the past with the advantages of a kriged block model. The limitations of Mine Call Factors, the problems involved in converting decades of diamond drilling data on paper into a computer data base, and the effect of this new methodology at Rosebery, are described.

INTRODUCTION The NIMCIX contactor was developed in the late sixties at the National Institute for Metallurgy in South Africa, for the main purpose of extracting uraniuy from relatively low-grade uranium solutions. ' The concept was sufficiently developed by 1974 to permit the operation of a 1500 litre per minute column to treat unclarified urgnium-bearing solution under industrial conditions. The plant operated so successfully that several large-scale units have subsequent18 teen constructed and are operating efficiently. ' Total resin consumption figures as210w as 3 per cent per annum have been reported, and the extraction efficiencies of the installations have been exceptionally good. All the solutions treated have been acidic in nature and in every case have been of such a nature as to significantly depress the maximum uranium loading on the resin beads. The chemical constituents of the leach solution fed to the loading column determines the ease with which the soluble uranium can be absorbed by an ion exchange resin. The concentration of competing ions and various resin foulants define the nature of the continuous ion exchange equipment required for efficient extraction performance. The basic NIMCIX concept is retained in these various alternate designs, but batch or continuous elution methods with fully automated or manual control systems may be selected for the different process solution conditions. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE NIMCIX CONTACTOR The NIMCIX ion exchange column is a multi-stage fluidized bed contactor which is designed to permit a counter-current flow of solution and resin in order to maximize extraction efficiency. The flow o resin is periodic, based on the Cloete and Streat 5 principle of reverse flow. The basic operating cycle can be divided into five periods, as illustrated in Figure 1. For the purposes of describing the cycle, the loading column is considered; how- ever, a similar sequence may be applied to the operation of a NIMCIX continuous elution column. S'I'EP 1: During the forward flow period, Solution flows up through the column and fluidizes the resin contained in each stage. The uranium depleted solution overflows the upper flared-section of the column as the tail solution. Step 2: The flow of solution to the column is temporarily stopped and the resin is allowed to Settle onto the plates in the column. STEP 3: During the reverse flow period, a fixed volume of solution is drained from the column to the transfer vessel. This flow causes resin transfer to occur from stage to stage and also out of the bottom stage. At the end of this period, which expires when the low level switch (LS) is actuated, some of the resin is left in the conical section of the column and the pipe interconnecting the column and the vessel. STEP 4: The cone flush period ensures that all the resin left in the cone of the column and the pipe is transferred to the transfer vessel before forward flow commences. STEP 5: The loaded resin in the transfer vessel, which has been isolated from the column, can either be hydraulically transferred to the top of the elution column or eluted in the vessel before being transferred to the top of the loading column. The major advantages associated with the NIMCIX concept are: (i) Simple method of operation (ii) Contactor can readily be scaled up to large diameters. (iii) Because the resin does not pass through pumps or airlifts, and valves cannot be closed on resin beads at any time, the resin losses are exceptionally low. (iv) Operating costs are low. (v) Relatively few valves in the system. (vi) Stable operation is achieved over a wide range of feed rates and concentrations.

Nearly all copper-base alloys are improved by rolling processes, but the copper-aluminum alloys seem to possess equally good properties when cast or rolled; this is a remarkable metallurgical fact. Another important property of these copper-aluminum alloys is their resistance to alternating stress. Many tests indicate that their resistance is greater in this respect than that of some steels, and I have seen instances when cast aluminum-bronze bolts have outlived five steel bolts in foundation work subject to severe shocks. I mention these various instances to indicate that work originally started as research for substitution of one material for another frequently develops 212 article which has properties not possessed by the original metal or alloy. I have dwelt particularly on the aluminum bronzes because recently I have done more special work on them than on other alloys, but I believe that the use of aluminum itself, in many combinations of metals, is a very important subject for investigation. Undoubtedly, after the war, the cost of aluminum will be reduced from its present price, and considering its low specific gravity it offers a very interesting and important field for research in the non-ferrous business. Naturally, if combinations containing aluminum can be developed in view of a probably increasing supply of metal, the cost will be reduced. This will benefit the industry generally and will immediately conserve tin. Bronzes, Bearing Metals, and Solders G. K. Burgess* and R. W. Woodward,† Washington, D. C.— From a metallurgical standpoint, there are several ways in which a reduction of the tin consumed in commercial non-ferrous and white-metal alloys can be effected. First, a reduction of the tin content of the alloy; second, substitution of part or all of the tin content by some other metal; third, a substitution of a different type of alloy, which in some cases also involves a change in mechanical design. The Bureau of Standards has been studying these methods of conservation for tin alloys, particularly in regard to babbitts and bearing metals, bronzes, and solders. Much of the information sewed by the Bureau was obtained from answers to questionnaires sent to manufacturers and users of these materials, so that, in general, any of the following suggestions or recommendations can be considered as being practical and as having already been thoroughly tried. "Geometallurgy is a discipline that seeks to improve the sustainability of the extraction of metals and minerals by promoting the smarter use of non-renewable resources, better energy efficiency and greater use of renewable energy. To achieve these goals, development of innovative technologies and approaches are being developed along the entire commodity value chain, starting with exploration and extraction and extending to reuse and recycling. This paper discusses the geometallurgy of industrial minerals with special emphasis on kaolin, a versatile industrial mineral applied in ceramics, paper, paint, plastics, rubber, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, ink, sealants, adhesives, sanitary ware, glass fibre, toothpaste, animal feed etc. Aspects of kaolin extraction in south-west UK are analysed from a geometallurgical perspective. While geometallurgy already features in kaolin extraction, its role can be significantly expanded by combining advanced in-pit characterisation and orebody modelling with integrated planning and control of the refining and calcination process. Já são bem conhecidas diversas práticas operacionais para controle dos pontos quentes sendo que, uma das mais usuais, é o uso na carga do forno ou injeção via ventaneiras de fontes de óxido de titânio para formar, junto à parede do cadinho, uma camada protetora composta por carbonitreto de titânio. Neste trabalho será apresentado o desenvolvimento de uma nova concepção de massa de tamponamento contendo dióxido de titânio sintético, para auxiliar em problemas de pontos quentes em regiões do cadinho próximas aos furos de corrida.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (CNR) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia, about 50 km north of the town of Southern Cross. Ore is trucked from three geographically isolated sources to the crusher at Koolyanobbing, where it is blended before and during crushing. Lump and fines products are produced and railed to Esperance for ship loading and export to Asian customers. CNR is examining alternative processing paths, from mining to ship loading, with the aim of improving efficiency and reducing costs. Modifications to the system must be consistent with potential future expansions and maintain the low inter-shipment grade variability on which CNR prides itself and has built a strong relationship with its customers. In searching for the optimum process design, many options from mine face to ship loading must be evaluated and compared. Pilot plant studies are infeasible, while complex mineralogical interactions, competing goals and numerous possible system configurations limit the applicability of theoretical analysis. It was therefore concluded that simulation modeling would provide the confidence to take the next step into production trials. This paper describes techniques applied at CNR to simulate grade variability resulting from potential process design changes. The simulation models are easily run Excel-based modules, with each module representing a different part of the process. The modules use extensive Visual Basic macros driven by Excel's user-friendly interfaces. Presentation of the results is enhanced by Excel's excellent graphical capabilities. The simulation software stores and graphically presents time-stamped data from a run, enabling detailed analysis of different process configurations. Final success of a simulation run is measured by inter-shipment variability (standard deviation and process capability) and in-process ore tonnages. Meaningful results from the simulations require the initial input data contain the same correlations present in the real production environment, between the mineral components, production linkages and across time. The data also have to allow simulation of potential changes to mining method and introduction of new pits into the blend. Mining data from the real operations under study are therefore used, with average grades and variability adjusted to match potential future development proposals. It is also necessary to filter out medium and long-term variations from the production data as this variability is best controlled through the conventional medium to long-term mine planning process, not by the process design being studied. The filtering was carried out using a Fourier transform technique, which is described.

Kinross Paracatu started the operation of the new gold processing plant in the end of 2008, being composed by one SAG mill and two ball mills. During the first year of operation the plant had several problems related to stability and throughput capacity, mainly due to low grinding efficiency of the ball mills. In this period many actions were taken to maximize the throughput rate. Among the actions are reducing the size of balls in the mills, increasing the ball charge in the SAG mill, changing cyclone configuration and return of circulating load to SAG mill. With better stability of the circuit, the second stage of improvements has begun with the objective of increasing throughput rate and also reducing operation costs. Among the actions are the optimization of ball charge in the mills and a better operational control of cyclone parts. After two years of operation was obtained a significant increase in plant capacity, but still requires the addition of a third ball mill in order to maximize the use of SAG mill, which has spare capacity.

"The study of combined depressants for flotation separation of lead from copper has been carried out to solve the copper-lead separation problem. Test results show that the depressant of CMC (Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose) or sodium sulfite plays an important role on the selective depression of galena flotation. When the two reagents above are combined, the selective depression effect on galena is further enhanced. When the mass ratio of CMC to sodium sulfite is 1:4, galena was best depressed, with the lowest lead content in the copper concentrateClosed-circuit tests indicate that under a certain pH value of the slurry, with the best ratio of CMC to sodium sulfite as depressants, the copper concentrate with the grade of 28.23% copper and 4.12% lead is obtained, and the copper recovery is 84.87%; the lead concentrate with 68.12% lead and 0.86% copper is obtained, and the lead recovery reaches to 92.20%. An efficient separation of copper and lead is achieved with the combined depressants. INTRODUCTIONComplex copper-lead-zinc sulfide ore is abundant in China. With the rapid increase of mineral consumption, it has become one of the important sources to produce copper-lead-zinc metals. However, it is difficult to achieve effective separation of copper and lead, due to the complicated ore properties, such as fine dissemination, low copper grade, complex symbiotic relationship and similar floatability of copper and lead.Poisonous reagents of bichromate and cyanide are often used as depressants for copper lead separation. They have good separation efficiency, but pose serious pollution issues. As the environmental protection is becoming more and more important, it is a trend to replace traditional toxic reagents with new nontoxic efficient chemicals. Organic depressant FCLS studied by Liu has strong selectivity against galena, and does not depress chalcopyrite. A new type of galena depressant of CLS-01 discovered by Jin-lin Yang shows good results in the separation a mixed copper and lead concentrate. In addition, dextrin, chitosan and some other natural organic compounds (Drzymala, 2003; Huang, 2012; Qin, 2013) have also been studied to separate copper and lead."

Four solvent extraction systems were studied to determine their efficiency jor extraction and separation of tantalum and columbium. Aqueous feed solutions of varying HF-HCl concentrations and metal content were contacted with equal volumes of cyclohexanone, 3-methyl-2-butanone, and 2-pentanone and solutions of varying HF-H2S04 concentrations were contacted with equal volumes of 2-pentanone. One multistage continuous test was made in a polyethylene pulse column using cy clohexanone as the organic phase. In each system studied, columbium and tantalum purities in excess of 95 pct with respect to each other were obtained in single-stage tests at low acidities in the feed solution. Separation factors ranging from 1700 to 2400 were obtained when rising HF-HCl mixtures in the aqueous phase. Best results were obtained when a solution of HF-H2S04 was used as the aqueous phase and 2-pentanone as the organic phase. A separation factor in excess of 6000 was obtained in one stage with aqueous solution concentrations of 2 _N HF and 2N H2S0,. When acid concentrations were increaszd to 52 HF and 10 _N H2S0,, 99.9 pct of the tantalum and 98.2 pct of the columbium initially present in the feed solution were transferred to the organic phase. The separation of columnbium and tantalum obtainable by means of the solvent extraction systems presented in this paper was found to corn -pare favorably with other systems, including the HF-H2SO4-methyl isobutyl ketone system currently used by most producers for the extraction and separation of these metals. TANTALUM and columbium are always found together in minerals of commercial significance, although the proportion of the two metals in ores varies within broad limits. Columbium is estimated to be 13 times more abundant than tantalum. Five methods generally employed for the separat:ion of these metals are: 1) fractional crystallization (the Marignac process),2 2) solvent separation, 3) fractional distillation of their chlorides, 4) ion exchange, and 5) selective reduction. Of these methods, the one currently used by industry to the greatest extent is that of solvent separation. One of the early technical developments in solvent separation of tantalum from columbium was reported by the Bureau of Mines: the HF-HC1-methyl isobutyl ketone system; data were presented for both laboratory and pilot-plant experimentation.3 Of twenty-eight organic solvents tested for their ability to extract tantalum from an HF-HC1 solution of columbium and tantalum, 3-pentanone (diethyl ke-tone), cyclohexanone, 2-pentanone, and 3-methyl-2-butanone were chosen for further study. Data on the HF-HC1-diethyl ketone system has been published4 and data describing the use of cy clohexanone, 2-pentanone, and 3-methyl-2-butanone as the organic phase are included in this report. RAW MATERIAL The source of tantalum and columbium oxides for this study was ('Geomines" tin slag from the Manono Smelter, Cie Geomines, Gelges, S.A., Congo. In order to extract the valuable Ta-Cb content, the slags were carbided, chlorinated, and the sublimate from chlo-rination was hydrolized and washed free of chloride with water. The washed material was air-dried and stored in a stoppered container. Throughout the paper, "feed material" refers to this mixture of hydrated oxides which was employed because of its high solubility in aqueous solutions. Typical analysis of the hydrated oxides is shown in Table I. I) HF-HC1-CYCLOHEXANONE SYSTEM Batch Separation. Effect of Acid Concentration. To determine the effect of varying the acid concentration upon the transfer of tantalum and columbium, a series of tests was made in which approximately 2.5 g of feed material was added to 25 ml solutions of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 N HF and 0 through 5 N HC1. Tantalum pentoxide concentration of the solu%ons was approximately 21 g per liter and columbium pentoxide was 14 g per liter. These starting solutions were shaken with equal volumes of cyclohexanone in 100 ml polyethylene bottles for 30 min. The phases were carefully separated in 125 ml glass separatory funnels. The time of contact of the solutions with the separatory funnels was kept at a minimum to reduce silica contamination. The measured phases were separated into 400 ml polyethylene beakers and the metal contents of each were precipitated by addition of an excess of ammonium hydroxide. Precipitate from each phase was filtered on ashless filter paper, ignited at 800" to 1000°C for 45 min, weighed, and analyzed by X-ray fluorescence.5 Data tabulated in Table I1 and illustrated in Fig. 1, show that maximum separation of tantalum from columbium for each HF concentration was obtained with no HCl present. In the fully mechanized top caving mining of steeply inclined, extra-thick seams with variable angles, the mechanisms of roof rock movement, failure, caving and filling are highly complex. This is due to the varying angle of coal seam in different areas, which makes rock–equipment stability control challenging. In this paper, the surrounding rock deformation and failure mechanisms, bearing structure of the overburden, and working characteristics of the supports are elucidated. The principle and key technologies of rock–equipment stability control are presented and applied to control the overburden of the regional failure and realize safe and efficient mining of the working face.

"The new H-W orebody was evaluated by considering its production at three technically feasible rates. Capital and operating costs were estimated f or each rate and production sequences were established using mining cutoff limits generated by an ore value algorithm. The viability of the project was then examined by conducting economic and financial analyses of each of the three production cases under various world economic scenarios. These analyses employing standard profitability measures demonstrated all three cases would be economically viable; the production case which maximized the Net Present Value of the project was the one selected for development and production.IntroductionWestmin Resources Limited and its predecessor company, Western Mines Ltd., has been continuously carrying out mining operations near Myra Falls in Central Vancouver Island since December 1966. The mining operation, whose current production rate is approximately 830 tonnes / day (t/d), based on ore derived from the Myra and Lynx Mines, produces copper, lead and zinc concentrates which contain significant quantities of gold and silver in addition to the base metals.In the late 1970s, with Lynx and Myra ore reserves slipping to unacceptably low levels, a major increase in mine-site exploration was initiated, with outside geological staff brought in to complement the efforts of the mine's geological staff. By the end of 1979, this program had resulted in the discovery of a significant new orebody on a deeper horizon some 300 metres below the one which hosts the Lynx and Myra deposits. Throughout the period 1980-1982, major drilling was carried out to evaluate the new H-W deposit and by the end of 1982, drill-indicated mineral inventory for the deposit compared with Myra, Lynx and Price ore reserves was as shown in Table I. During this same three-year period, a major development and evaluation program was underway comprising environmental monitoring and control programs, shaft sinking test mining, bulk sampling and mill testing, rock mechanics studies and preparation of the Stage I and II reports for the multidisciplinary Environmental Land Use Committee (ELUC).As a result of the preliminary engineering work and exploration drilling, it became rapidly apparent that the H-W deposit could support a considerably higher production rate than the current one. Accordingly, engineering studies including scheduling of development and production as well as capital and operating cost estimates, were focused on three possible production rates: 1350, 1800 and 2700 t/d. Our task was to select the optimum one of these three rates."

"The Strathcona Mine is located in Levack Township on the North Range ofthe Sudbury Basin. The main orebody consists of pyrrhotite-pentlandite-chalcopyrite mineralization associated with an embayment of the footwall of the Sudbury Irruptive. A zone of massive chalcopyrite-cubanite-pentlandite mineralization occurs in a complex vein system in a series of mixed gneisses and breccias in the footwall. Vein widths vary from a few millimetres to 6 metres. In December 1979, this zone was estimated to contain 976,000 metric tonnes, with a grade of 9.31% Cu and 0.46% Ni. The vein system has a general strike of N 68°W at an angle of 60 degrees to the average strike of the footwall contact of the Irruptive. The dip of the vein system is 45 degrees sw. The strike and dip of individual veins in the system coincide with the directions that would result if a compressive stress had acted in a direction normal to the footwall of the Sudbury Irruptive, producing a conjugate set of fractures. The strike of the Irruptive at the Strathcona Mine is parallel to the long axis of the basin.IntroductionThe Strathcona Mine, owned and operated by Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, is located in Levack Township on the northwest rim of the Sudbury basin (Fig. I) . It is one of a group of nickel-copper sulphide ore deposits present along an 8.2-km section of the North Range of the Sudbury Irruptive. In the mines of the North Range, subunits of the Irruptive, going from hanging wall to footwall , include felsic norite, dark norite and dark norite breccia. The footwall complex at Strathcona includes the late granite breccia, which hosts a large proportion of the nickel-copper ores, and a compositionally variable group of brecciated and migmatized rocks, herein referred to as the feldspathic gneiss complex. It is within this latter group of rocks that the vein system of the Copper Zone occurs."

FOR many years Industrial Minerals, or as they were formerly called, 'the Non-Metallic Minerals', compared with the metallics, were considered of only minor importance and as such were given scant attention in the technical press as well as in the public press. Those days are, however, happily passing, and thanks, to an appreciable extent, to the constant endeavour of the Industrial Minerals Section of this Institute, established in the fall of 1932 industrial minerals are now assuming the importance to which they are entitled. The term 'Industrial Minerals', when first adopted in this sense by the Institute, was thought to be original in its application, but it is interesting to note that it had been used many years previously by the Queensland Geological Survey in the following publication: SALT Article 1 in Industrial Minerals by B. DUNSTAN, Chief Government Geologist (Publication No. 268, in Part) Queensland Geological Survey, Department of Mines, Brisbane 1920 In Queensland, however, the term embraced some of the metals as well as the non-metallic minerals proper. The lead furnished by Canada in this matter bore rapid fruit, and already the term 'Industrial Minerals' is widely used, not only throughout Canada but in the United States as well.

"The government o f Canada has, since 1981, been under intense political pressure to modify its foreign direct investment (FOI) regulatory regime(1). To date the government's response has been limited to administrative and ""cosmetic"" changes: substantive issues have been largely ignored(2). However, as long as the economy continues to flounder , the Foreign Investment Review Agency (FIRA), as it is presently formulated , will continue to be an easy target for government critics . This phenomenon, in conjunction with the virtual certainty of a federal general election within two years, suggests that changes to the FIR Act will be seriously entertained by the present government.Recent events indicate that if change s are made, they will likely entail the adoption of a special-sector approach within the existing framework of a general screening system(3). Since this approach is currently employed in Australia(4), it would seem to be appropriate, from a public policy perspective to study that country's experience in developing and operating such a scheme. In doing so, I shall focus on the mineral sector; the rationale for doing so is as follows. First, this sector served as the focal point of the Australian FOI regulatory debater(5), Second , with the exception of the oil and gas industries, the non-petroleum mineral sector is one of the few areas of the Canadian economy wherein the Trudeau government has adopted an explicit domestic ownership target(6). Third, the non-petroleum mineral sector is, undoubtedly, a prime candidate to be denoted a s a special-sector if such a framework were to be utilized by the Canadian government!"".Although international comparisons are fraught with danger , a Canadian/Australian comparison is particularly appropriate(8). Both countries have reasonably similar economic, political and social structures . Furthermore, as noted above , Australia is the only other western country which employs a general screening mechanism for FOI. In addition, it utilizes a special area approach ; within this scheme, an explicit target of a minimum of 50% Australian ownership of all new resource projects has been formulated and clearly promulgated to all of the relevant interest groups. This policy, broadly defined, has been in place for more than six years and during this time the Australian mineral sector has, by world standards, prospered(9). Hence, the Australian experience in designating the mineral sector as a key area within a general screening system, should be of interest to Canadian policy-makers."

lntroduction Some years ago it was general practice in Canadian mines to use the best timber available, just as it was cut from the tree. Later, to prevent 'borers' from getting into the wood while stacked in the yard, the bark was peeled off, cleaned up carefully, and burned to eliminate a breeding ground for these and other destructive insects. This practice of good housekeeping also decreased the hazard from fire in scattered bark. A few years after damage by borers had been minimized, it became apparent that increased temperatures in the mines, occasioned by deepening operations, were being accompanied by rapid growth of fungus and by decay in timber underground, greatly shortening its life. In places on upper levels where the air temperature was below 50 deg. F., untreated timber retained a large proportion of its strength for ten or more years. In other places on these levels, however; its life was short and it developed much dry rot and merulius lacrymans. In these latter places and on lower levels in the mine where temperatures ranged from 50 to 60 deg. F., approximately, the wood became infested with extensive growths of this white fungus. This development was accompanied by the production of millions of spores. Spread of infection was due mainly to the transfer of spores from the warm lower levels to the cool upper horizons by upcasting ventilation currents. So serious did this become that about twenty years ago Lake Shore, Hollinger, and McIntyre Mines decided to investigate the use of wood preservatives and the plant necessary to treat timber.

North America had an Important role in the early development of sampling theories. Unfortunately many progressive ideas were soon frozen into a series of guidelines based on the philosophy that "honest sampling only requires good judgment and practical experience". Such a philosophy appeared to be good enough In the early age of the mining Industry; however, it became quickly necessary to find new approaches. During the last thirty years, Pierre Gy's sampling theory provided tremendous breakthrough in the comprehension of this new science, nevertheless went unnoticed in North America. Sampling always generates complex problems and as the philosopher and mathematician Descartes suggested: "A complex problem can often be dissociated Into a series of several simpler problems, only then you try to solve those one by one". The only way to solve sampling problems is to consider each component of the overall sampling error: components of a continuous model such as long-range quality fluctuations, periodic quality fluctuations, weighting fluctuations; components of a discrete model such as materialization errors, delimitations errors, extraction errors, fundamental errors, grouping errors, and segregation errors. PAST AND CURRENT PRACTICES Many sampling methodologies have been developed, improved, and standardized during the first half of this century. Accordingly, sampling equipment has been proposed, selected, and used by standards committees. Today, there is a tremendous variety of sampling methodologies and corresponding tools offered to anyone with limited experience in sampling and it is very easy for a chemist, metallurgist, geologist or miner to spend considerable money in equipment transgressing the most basic rules of sampling correctness. Sampling stations that never worked properly in modern plants often cause engineers to abandon them and return to a primitive form of grab sampling.
