BP Minerals America (BPMA) has completed its $400 million modernization of Kennecott Utah Copper's Bingham Canyon mine. Modernized facilities include the in-pit crusher, conveyor, ore storage area, concentrator, ore pipe-line, and tailings pipeline. With modernization, Kennecott will achieve substantial cost reductions. Bingham Canyon is now one of the lowest cost copper producers in the world. And the mine will continue to provide jobs and income in Utah for another 30 years or more. The Modernization Project began in February 1986. The work took 33 months. In late 1987, the construction force peaked at 1100 workers. Kennecott Utah Copper now employs a permanent work force of 2100 employees. Less equipment and more efficiency The modernization work has increased the scale of the facilities that transport and process copper ore. A large, continuous transport system has replaced multiple haulage units. Fewer but larger pieces of equipment have replaced many crushing, grinding, and flotation units. The result is less maintenance, fewer employees, and improved metal recoveries. About one-third of the $400 million modernization project is directed at improving ore movement by eliminating rail transport. The new concentrator accounts for the remaining two-thirds of the modernization investment. The modernized plant was started up in stages. In February, ore was fed to the crusher. By the end of March, the three grinding lines were operating and the flotation circuit was producing copper concentrate. In July, the design through-put rate of 70 kt/d (77,000 stpd) was reached. October saw the achievement of targeted metal recoveries that corresponded to the fully modernized operation. It is estimated that Bingham Canyon will annually produce 181 kt (200,000 st) of refined copper, 9.3 t (300,000 oz) of gold, 71 t (2.3 million oz) of silver, and 5.4 kt (12 million lb) of molybdenite. Current Bingham Canyon production is about 97 kt/d (107,000 stpd) and a similar amount of overburden. Some 70 kt/d (77,000 stpd) of ore are processed through the in-pit crusher and 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) of ore are transported by rail. The Bingham Canyon mine has yielded more than 11 Mt (12 million st) of refined copper. In 1863, precious metals - silver-bearing lead - were first discovered in Bingham Canyon. What was once a mountain is now a huge open pit. In fact, the mine is the world's largest man made excavation. The pit is some 4 km (2.5 miles) wide and 0.8 km (0.5 miles) deep. Since the pit began operating in 1906, more than 4.5 Gt (5 billion st) of material have been removed. Modernized facilities Electric 21 m3 (27 cu yd) or 23 m3 (30 cu yd) shovels are used to load the haulage trucks. Both 154 t (170 st) and 181 t (200 st) trucks are used to haul the ore to a mobile, in-pit crusher. The crusher replaces three crushers located at the old concentrators. There are two dumping locations at the new crusher, which can handle two trucks a minute. The 1.5 x 2.7 m (60 x 109 in.), 745 kW (1000 hp) Allis-Chalmers gyratory crusher reduces the ore to 254 mm (10 in.) size or less and delivers it to the conveyor. The crusher and conveyor systems are capable of handling 9 kt/h (10,000 stph) of ore.

O Alto Forno 3 (AF3) da Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) é o equipamento muito importante no processo siderúrgico da Usina Presidente Vargas (UPV), situada em Volta Redonda (RJ), por responder por mais de 70% da produção de gusa da UPV. Na produção de gusa é gerado o Gás de Alto Forno (GAF), subproduto de alta relevância, pois este gás sai do topo do AF3 com grande pressão e cinética, energia essa passível de utilização. Em 2007 a CSN, optou por adquirir um equipamento denominado “Top Pressure Recovery Turbine” (TRT), capaz de aproveitar tal energia para gerar energia elétrica. Em 2013, a equipe de supervisores da KHI – Kawasaki Heavy Industrie, fabricante da turbina, veio para o Brasil para realizar no equipamento os testes a frio e a quente para na seqüência vir a operá-lo. Ocorre que fatores alheios ao objetivo desta apresentação impediram a equipe da KHI de partir o equipamento no tempo previsto, bem como de retornar ao Brasil para dar seqüência nas atividades. Em novembro de 2013 a CSN definiu por partir o equipamento com recursos próprios, sendo este o foco do trabalho. A presente contribuição técnica vem mostrar o trabalho desenvolvido internamente pelo grupo técnico a fim de finalizar o projeto e colocar a Turbina de Topo (TRT) em operação, fato este dado total ênfase pela direção da empresa devido ao cenário nacional de crise energética em que os valores de energia estavam no limite máximo permitido pela legislação e impactando diretamente nos custos da empresa.

The activities of nickel in liquid iron-nickel solutions containing from 10 to 90 at. pct Ni were measured over the temperature range .1510° to 1600°C. A special function was devised whereby activities can be computed by a graphical integration using the results of chemical analyses on the vapor phase alone. The liquid solutions studied exhibit negative deviation from Raoult's law, but they approach ideality as the temperature is raised from 1510° to 1600°C. The maximum heat of solution is less than -8.0 kcal per mole. The entropy of solution is less than —2.5 kcal per mole deg at 1510°C, and changes negligibly as the temperature is raised. The liquid iron-nickel solutions do not follow regular solution behavior. THE activities of the components of a liquid alloy system can be determined in favorable cases from the partial pressure of the vapor in equilibrium with the liquid alloy.' Currently, it is important for companies to have controlled mining operations and adhere to production schedules. To achieve this, one of the key factors is maintaining high reliability in the P&T process, primarily the opening of ore stope, which could be delayed due to any unplanned or uncontrolled problem. These ore stope opening processes, whose main activity is generating free face, are a very important pillar for future mine planning. The possibility of ensuring their opening brings a series of downstream benefits: safety, economics, productivity, and compliance and adherence to plans. The process under discussion consists of developing free faces in a single blasting event. This will help us leverage greater reliability for overall production operation plans, reduce construction times, and open up opportunities for downstream improvements in the production process, considering technical factors in P&T designs. This study presents a developed methodology and shows the results of its implementation in ten (18) single-event free face blasts. The analysis includes cavity geometry, geology, rock qualities, drilling deviations, and the blasting strategy implemented for each event. The methodology used considered material fluffing processes, the actual drilling trajectory, the initiation sequence, QA/QC during explosive loading, monitoring instrumentation (vibrations), and VOD recording, among others. As a result, out of a total of 18 free-face events blasts in a single event, 16 were successful and two achieved 90% efficiency, reducing the stope's production start-up time by 50% compared to current operations. By implementing free face blasting in a single event, there are savings in operating costs, increased productivity of the mining equipment, and improved adherence to production plans. For applications with greater heights of free faces, where blasting cannot be carried out in a single event, we should consider performing them in two stages using wireless detonators already available on the market for mining operations.

The process of gold recovery by gravity concentration is incorporated in the metal recovery flowsheet at seven Newmont Mining Corporation owned mining operations in Australia, North America and Africa. In 2009 gold recovered by gravity processing was equivalent to nine percent of Newmont's total gold sales of 5.3 million ounces. This paper will discuss these applications in detail including a review of plant flowsheets and presentation of recent operating results. Operating performance will be discussed with reference to ore characterisation procedures, interpretation of results, design considerations and optimisation practices as they relate to the recovery of gold by gravity concentration.

"Simulation can serve as a convenient tool in studying the behaviour and performance of grinding circuits by facilitating the evaluation of various scenarios and identification of optimum operating conditions. This technique was applied to the St Andrew Goldfields Ltd.’s Stock Mine Mill which is a 1300 tpd gold milling facility, offering custom milling services as well as processing the Company’s own ores. Lack of adequate instrumentation in the mill poses a challenge in attaining optimum performance especially with changing ore types and characteristics. The grinding process is monitored essentially by manual measurement and adjustment of pulp densities at various streams. A simulation program was designed to assist in the effective implementation of this mode of grinding control. Product sizes from both the primary and secondary grinding circuits were correlated empirically to relevant process variables using a database formed from the results of past sampling campaigns. The simulator was created in Microsoft Excel whose data analysis and optimization tools coupled with its Visual Basic Programming capabilities were found to provide an excellent environment for the development of a cost-effective, efficient and user-friendly simulation program.INTRODUCTIONGrinding is often a very costly unit process in milling operations, mainly due to the excessive energy consumption associated with it. For example, for a Canadian copper-zinc flotation mill, grinding was listed as being the most costly item taking up 30.4% of the total milling expenses, followed by the flotation cost at 2 1 .O% (Kidd Creek Mines Ltd., 1982). A survey on 45 copper flotation mills around the world showed the average grinding cost to be 34.5% of the total milling cost (Weiss, 1985).Overgrinding aggravates the cost issue, while insufficient grinding either causes loss of valuable minerals to tails or results in low-grade concentrates. Therefore, it is essential that grinding circuits be carefully controlled and monitored. To this end, a great deal of effort has been devoted over the years to the modelling and simulation of grinding systems in order to assist in the efficient running of these processes."

"Refratechnik, a leading German refractory company, acquired a majority shareholding in Baymag in 1979. This acquisition included the mining rights for a magnesite deposit of exceptionally high purity in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.The deposit, situated in the Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia, is of Cambrian age and has ore reserves of 50 million m. t. of magnesite. The Baymag magnesite deposit is one of the purest in the world. The deposit was opened up and mining commenced in early 1982. Production of various caustic calcined magnesia products in a rotary kiln operation in Exshaw, Alberta, was started in mid-1982. The product application ranges from pulp and paper production, to the chemical industry, and to animal feed supplements. Since the end of 1983, Baymag has produced high-quality refractory grade fused magnesium oxide f or specialty applications in the steel industry.IntroductionAlthough magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth and forms about 2.06% of the earth's crust, common knowledge about magnesium and especially magnesium oxide (MgO) as an industrial mineral is not widespread. The reason might be that, with the exception of magnesium metal as the element, magnesia products are not generally sold as final products to end-users, but rather are needed for the production of final products such as steel, cement, paper, etc. Therefore, some general comments are given about the different sources of MgO, the different products, world production and consumption , before Baymag specifics are addressed. Além disso, possibilita melhores definições nas etapas de projeto, além de realizar uma análise de confiabilidade mais realista. O presente trabalho consiste em realizar uma análise de confiabilidade, através da simulação dinâmica, para entender como as paradas não-programadas influenciam a produção de uma planta de beneficiamento de ferro. Ainda, visa entender o desempenho fenomenológico dos equipamentos de acordo com a entrada de diferentes tipos de minérios e também como são suscetíveis a condições climáticas.

Active explosion barriers are used to contain and suppress a methane gas and/or coal dust explosion propagation, including localised mine fires. Early research indicated that these active explosion barriers could be used on a mechanised cutting machine, making it the only technology that could suppress an explosion during its propagation phase at the cutting face. Thereby not only adding protection during mining operations but also reducing the development of toxic gases, fatal temperature increase and fatal overpressure build-up. During their evolution over the last two decades, further advantages of Active explosion barriers were proven in mine operations in countries such as South Africa and China. Characteristics such as effectivity, efficiency, mobility and space restrictions allow these systems to be used in various locations within a mine operation, including highwall operations. This improved technology contribution to safer coal mining was recognised by mine operators, workers and regulators. The Queensland’s Recognised Standard 21 (Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ), 2021) stipulated active explosion barriers as a technology to ensure the safety within their underground coalmines. The mobility and flexible implementation of the active explosion barriers allow a feasible and practical solution for all critical locations for explosion and fire management in an underground coalmine. The conformance to the Recognised Standard can be achieved all underground coal mining operations such as Bord and Pillar, and Longwall mining. This paper describes the conformance, implementation and use of Active explosion barriers for Longwall mining and development as well as Bord and Pillar mining in Queensland’s underground coalmines.

"Various kinds of civil engineering structures and facilities were seriously damaged in the earthquake in Tohoku and Kanto regions of Japan on 11 March 2011 due to the greatness of its magnitude. In contrast, many structures resisted the large seismic force having been reinforced by the CDM (Cement Deep Mixing) method, which is often used for increasing the bearing capacity of ground and improving seismic performance. This paper summarizes the field survey undertaken to investigate damage to structures and facilities reinforced by the CDM method. Several prefectures and metropolitan areas were selected for the survey, based on the occurrence of strong seismic motions. A total of 847 structures and facilities were studied, in the survey using a questionnaire, which mainly inquired about the appearance of structures and facilities. Of the respondents to the questionnaire, 789 replied that there were no seriously damaged structures. The paper presents the damaged and non-damaged sites of CDM-technique sites and non-CDM-techniques sites. It can be concluded from the field survey that the CDM Method demonstrates high efficacy and durability against a strong seismic motions.INTRODUCTIONDuring the afternoon of 11 March, 2011, a huge magnitude-9.0 Mw (Category 9.0 on the Richter scale) earthquake occurred about 25 kilometers below the Pacific Ocean’s surface off the coast of Tohoku. This massive earthquake, now called the 2011 Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake was the largest earthquake ever observed in Japan. The seismic intensity of this earthquake was measured 7, the maximum on the Japanese intensity scale, as observed 7 in northern Miyagi Prefecture. The earthquake caused severe damage over a wide area from Tohoku to Kanto, and triggered large tsunamis that struck the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, Tohoku, and Kanto. The number of missing and fatalities caused by this earthquake exceeded 18,000 persons, making this an unparalleled earthquake disaster with a cost-in-life toll not experienced by Japan in recent years. Because of the scale of its seismic motions, the earthquake damaged facilities and structures of many kinds. In the years prior to this earthquake, the CDM method was used extensively to increase the bearing capacity of the ground as an anti-seismic countermeasure and to prevent liquefaction. Immediately after the earthquake, the CDM Association visually surveyed the state of damage to about 800 facilities in the Tohoku and Kanto regions where a seismic intensity of 5 or higher was observed. This report summarizes the survey of damage to facilities and structures constructed applying the CDM method in order to confirm the durability and performance of the method against seismic motions."

Most of the steel welding done at the present time is in material containing not over 0.3 per cent. carbon, and the tests here described were in similar material. These tests are not as yet completed but it is hoped that more results and more reasons for the conclusions may be presented at the meeting in February. From the time the author found the peculiar structure in electric welds referred to in a previous paper,' that is, needles or plates in the grains and similar material, in larger spots, at the grain boundaries, he has felt that these plates which may be iron nitride and probably contain some carbon, were at least partly responsible for the brittleness of electric welds. He has found but few traces of similar lines in oxyacetylene welds until the last 2 mo., he has since found large numbers under certain conditions. In the top of these welds, they are quite numerous. In the body of heavy oxyacetylene welds, they appear at times, but not nearly to the extent that they do in electric welds; the author has never seen them in the body of welds in material less than % in. (19 mm.) thick. They are shown in Fig. 82. The reason they were not noticed before is undoubtedly due to the fact that in making tests of welded pieces the weld was always ground off level with the plate, and as this structure only appears in the top 1/16 in (1-5 mm.) of the weld, they were removed by the grinding or machining; also, welds 3/4 in. thick had not been examined. It did not appear, in making bending tests, that this structure had much influence on the strength of oxyacetylene welds; while electric welds are noticeably brittle. Further, oxyacetylene welds made with certain special materials were exceedingly brittle even after the tops of the welds were removed; this was true in cases where there was no sign of the plates whatever and where the welds were remarkably free from oxide and the other usual defects. It appeared, therefore, that this brittleness did not depend on any variable that had been noticed so far, and it was decided to find where the rupture occurred in various kinds of welds made

O tamanho médio dos grãos é um parâmetro estrutural frequentemente estimado quando se está avaliando, principalmente, as propriedades mecânicas dos materiais metálicos. A American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) estabelece, nas normas ASTM E112 e ASTM E1382, metodologias para estimar o tamanho médio dos cristais de maneira manual e semiautomática/automática, respectivamente. O presente trabalho propõe, além de uma nova metodologia semiautomática, duas metodologias automáticas para estimar o tamanhão médio de grão em materiais metálicos policristalinos monofásicos, assim como um parâmetro para avaliar a morfologia dos grãos. O tamanho de grão G ASTM encontrado utilizando os novos procedimentos testados se apresentou muito próximo aos valores obtidos pelos métodos padronizados, que também foram aplicados e usados como referência para avaliação da representatividade das medidas. Desse modo, os métodos propostos se apresentam como uma alternativa viável para estimar o referido parâmetro estrutural dos materiais metálicos.

Newmont Batu Hijau operates with an accelerated mining rate to optimize life of mine (LOM) project economics. This results in a portion of ore mined being stockpiled for reclaim and processing throughout, and at the end of mine life. LOM economics can be further enhanced by preserving stockpiled ore value by mitigating oxidation effects. A detailed stockpile ore oxidation study was conducted to: ?? Develop a practical understanding of how oxidation affects ore value; ?? Determine how oxidation rate can be controlled, and; ?? Determine how oxidation effects can be mitigated to preserve ore value. The result of the study is a stockpile management strategy that significantly reduces oxidation related losses and, implementation of that strategy within practical constraints. Implementation includes installation of Controlled Potential Sulfidisation (CPS) flotation to facilitate oxidised sulfide copper recovery and, recovery of dissolved copper from stockpile drainage solution into saleable product. This paper describes the study results including managing and predicting stockpile oxidation with time, monitoring performance of implemented CPS flotation and recovery of dissolved copper from stockpile drainage. These are essential elements of successful long term mine operation in Batu Hijau.

DURING an investigation of electro-deposited silver structures, samples were prepared for metallographic examination by cold mounting in plastic, grinding on successive grades of emery paper down to 3/0, and chemically polishing by swabbing using the chromic acid solution described by Gilpin and Worzala.1 Attempts to etch these samples using the standard solutions described for silver (e.g., 5 pet KCN-5 pet Na2S2O8, H2O2-NH4OH, and various potassium dichro-mate solutions) all failed to give good results due to staining of the samples and to rapid etching. The staining was caused by the chromic acid polishing solution being trapped in small fissures between the sample and the mounting plastic, and also in small fissures in the sample itself. To overcome these difficulties, an etchant was developed which prevented staining at the same time as it slowly etched the sample. This resulted in a very clean, crisply etched surface as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This etch consisted of 10 ml of orthophosphoric acid, 10 ml of distilled water, and 2 drops of the polishing solution noted above,' which is made by mixing 100 ml of saturated CrO3 solution, 45 ml of 10 pet HC1 solution, and 800 ml of distilled water. The etching procedure involved taking the final polished sample, either immersing or swabbing in the etchant for a period of 1 to 2 min, rinsing as quickly as possible in distilled water, alcohol, and ethyl ether in that order, and then immediately drying. This etch is easily controlled due to its slow rate of etching, and produces samples with clean, sharp surfaces. Pits due to overetching produced varying contrast effects when viewed under polarized light, and are therefore obviously useful for revealing many structural details within the sample. Nickel alloys containing approximately 0.5, 2.0, and 6.0 at. pct of Os, Pd, Ru, and Rh were Prepared by vacuum melting. Tension tests were carried out at 25°, 500°, 800°, and 1000°C; stress-rupture tests were carried out at 650° and 800°C. The room- and elevated-temperature tensile strength, as well as the stress-rupture life, increased for the same atomic percent in the order palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium. The ductility decreased with increasing concentration or temperature for a given concentration. The results are discussed in terms of solid-solution theory. BOTH solid-solution strengthening and weakening have been observed in alloys. The simple rules which have been suggested to explain alloy strengthening are subject to several exceptions and deviations based on atom size and valency effects. The purpose of the present investigation was to extend the knowledge of the effect of solid-solution alloying on the mechanical properties of several Ni-Pt group metal alloys at room and elevated temperatures. The platinum group metals, osmium, ruthenium, rhodium, and palladium were chosen as the solute elements because of their different valencies and atom sizes. Nickel was chosen as the base material because of the large amount of previous literature available on nickel alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Grade A Carbonyl nickel powder having the following composition: C, 0.07 pct; Fe, 0.013 pct; Mn, 0.0005 pct; Si, 0.016 pct; Mg, 0.0003 pct; S, 0.003 pct, was purchased from the International Nickel Co. The platinum-group metal powders were purchased from A. D. Mackay Co. The powders were weighed, cone-blended for 4 hr, and vacuum-melted into 1-in.-diam billets, approximately 2 in. long. The ingots were homogenized for 5 hr at 1800°F before being extruded into 1/4-in. rods at 2100°F. The alloy compositions are shown in Table I. Typical impurity values were not significantly different than that of the as-received nickel. All alloys were single phase. The lattice parameter of each alloy after the heat treatment described below is also included in Table I. Each alloy was annealed at 2200°F for 1 hr and air-quenched to comparable grain sizes (ASTM G.S. No. 4-5). The rods were then machined into test samples 0.160-in. diam and 0.750-in. gage length. Tension testing was carried out in an In-stron tension-testing machine at a strain rate of 0.02 in. per in. per min. An extensometer was used to determine the room-temperature yield stress. Stress-rupture testing was carried out in an Arc Weld stress-rupture unit. All testing was performed in air. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Room-Temperature Mechanical Properties. The 0.2 pct yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation for all alloys tested at room temperature are plotted as a function of atomic percent solute element in Fig. 1. The ultimate tensile strength for the same atomic percent increases in the order palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium. The yield strength at low concentrations, -0.5 at. pct, increases in the order osmium, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium. Refractory castables based on alumina-silicate aggregates are commonly used in casting wheel components and launders. In this research the recycling process of waste magnesia chrome bricks for production of refractory castable lining for launders and casting wheel ladles at Iranian Sarcheshmeh copper complex (I.S.C.C.) is discussed. The smelting plant of ISCC consumes 4,000 tons refractory materials and produces 2,000 tons waste refractories annually. In order to reduce the environmental pollutions and gain the economical advantages, the recycling of waste refractories proved to be a solution [1]. In ISCC, 800 tons alumina or alumina-silicate refractory castables are used for linings of anode furnace ladles and launders annually [2]. In the present work, the spent bricks from reverberatory, converter and anode furnaces were analyzed in term of microstructural changes from hot zone to the cold end to evaluate the changes in texture and chemical composition. Different formulations based on recycled magnesia chrome aggregates and various particle size distribution and cement content were tested. Economic recycled magnesia chrome refractory mixture was prepared after crushing and sizing the non-deteriorated regions of wasted bricks. After evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of samples, one ton of refractory castable was prepared and successfully installed in the casting wheel ladles.

An aerial magnetometer survey was carried out by the author's geophysical organization over the Vredefort dome, where Witwatersrand beds are wrapped around a granite plug 25 to 30 miles in diameter. The well- known magnetic shales of the Lower Witwatersrand system (to be referred to as LWW) give strong negative anomalies over the out-cropping portion of the dome. This is unusual as these same shales -cause positive anomalies over large areas near Johannesburg and along a strike of 130 miles between the East Rand and Klerksdorp. It is suggested that the negative polarization is caused by heat and stresses connected with the doming. This negative polarization of sedimentary beds, which usually cause positive anomalies, is a good example of how "magnetic lows" can be caused by "structural highs." Significant magnetic anomalies should be tested by gravity and seismic methods irrespective of the sign of the anomalies.

As argilas são matérias primas fundamentais na confecção dos produtos cerâmicos. Na produção de revestimentos cerâmicos as argilas com baixa quantidade de óxido ferro (Fe2O3), que resultam em peças com coloração branca ou bege, são preferenciais. Esse tipo de argila não é comumente encontrado pela indústria, o que torna seu valor expressivamente mais alto. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho é analisar as propriedades tecnológicas de massas cerâmicas produzidas com uma argila caulinítica do município de Boa Saúde-RN para produção de revestimentos. O procedimento experimental teve início com a fabricação das massas cerâmicas usando a argila, quartzo, caulim, feldspato K e dolomita, todos materiais com granulometria de 0,074mm. O processo de compactação das amostras ocorreu em uma prensa hidráulica com pressão de 21 MPa. As peças foram secas em uma estufa e sinterizadas no forno do tipo mufla, sem atmosfera protetora, nas temperaturas de 1000°C e 1100°C, com taxa de aquecimento de 10°C/min e patamar de isoterma de 60 minutos. No total, foram confeccionadas quarenta (40) amostras, sendo vinte (20) por temperatura. As propriedades tecnológicas das amostras foram aferidas através dos ensaios de absorção de água (AA%), retração linear (RL%), perda ao fogo (PF%), porosidade aparente (PA%) e massa específica aparente (MEA). Os resultados dos ensaios apontam que a argila estudada pode ser destinada para o setor de revestimentos do tipo poroso.

On 5 August 2014, the Orkney M5.5 earthquake, the largest in South African gold mining districts, occurred with an unusual strike-slip mechanism at great depth of 4.78 km below the surface. In a rare case, the ML 5.5 earthquake occurred within the area covered by the legacy 2D and 3D reflection seismic data acquired in the 1990s and 2000s for gold exploration and mine development. In addition, the earthquake ML 5.5 rupture plane was recorded and accurately delineated by the underground in-mine seismic network near the source region. The integration of the legacy 2D reflection seismic data and mine seismicity data allowed us to identify a near-vertical structure, striking northnorthwest-south southeast (NNW-SSE). The ICDP-DSeis team drilled three holes (Hole A, Hole B, and Hole C), and two holes (Hole B and Hole C), intersected the upper edges of the ML 5.5 rupture. These holes recovered metasediments, metabasalts, intrusive rocks including dolerite sills and lamprophyre dykes adjacent to the fault zone, and the fault gouge. Late Prof. Tullis Onstott and geomicrobiologists installed a packer in Hole A and successfully recovered saline water and detected gas (~10 MPa). Slip weakening and rupture propagation are significantly influenced by the existence of fault gouges and the production of wear material between two sliding rock surfaces. Using the fault gouge material recovered from Hole C, we conducted friction experiments under dry and room temperature conditions at high slip velocity of ~100 mm/s and normal stress of 2 MPa. The resulting steady-state frictional strength was ~0.66 over a slip weakening distance of ~9.1 m. The steady-state frictional strength was high, which may be caused by large gouge thickness, and the rate of wear generation. As a result, it is proposed that the Moab Khotsong ML 5.5 seismogenic zone is complex and could be controlled by three main processes: a) the complex structural architecture of the seismogenic zone (e.g., intersection of fault, lamprophyre dykes, and dolerite sills); b) the mechanical process induced by tectonic and/or mining related stresses; and c) the mechanical and chemical processes caused by the water and rock interaction.
