Foram realizados testes completos de pelotamento para avaliar os efeitos da adição de uma solução de cal hidratada ao pellet feed na etapa de pelotamento. Foram preparadas soluções com diferentes concentrações de cal hidratada e após a mistura das mesmas no pellet feed foram realizados testes de pelotamento onde os principais parâmetros de qualidade das pelotas cruas geradas foram avaliados. O diâmetro médio final das pelotas foi o principal parâmetro influenciado pela adição de cal hidratada. A presença dos íons Ca2+ e CaOH+, em função da dosagem de cal, altera o estado de dispersão do minério de ferro, afetando assim o processo de formação das pelotas. Ainda, os cátions Ca2+ presentes no pellet feed interagem com o aglomerante orgânico e com a bentonita, reduzindo a capacidade desses agentes em controlar o crescimento das pelotas.

The: iron-rich iron-nickel alloys have attracted considerable academic interest in recent years. The carbon-free alloys are of minor practical importance, but they are the base of many alloys with various outstanding properties. The iron-nickel alloys, therefore, have been investigated extensively regarding both their structures and their properties. The researches on these alloys up to 1938 have been collected and critically reviewed by J. S. Marsh,l and will be discussed in some detail in the sections of this paper dealing with specific subjects. These numerous investigations have not succeeded in establishing the equilibrium conditions in this system. Alloys containing more than a certain amount of nickel (8 to 10 per cent Ni) undergo the allotropic transformation extremely sluggishly, both on heating and cooling, showing a large hysteresis," which is not dependent upon the rate of cooling and persists even with very slow rates of cooling.3 Honda4 and Merica4 have therefore resigned themselves to proposing a diagram (Fig. I) for practical use, illustrating the structural relations under commercial conditions instead of attempting to establish the true equilibrium diagram. Marsh is less pessimistic and suggests an equilibrium diagram (Fig. 2) which conforms approximately to the facts known about this system. Recent X-ray investigations by Owen-Sully5 and Bradley-Gold-schmidt6 on powdered alloys indicate that the previous work on the iron-nickel system yielded very incomplete results. These investigators agree (Figs. 3 and ,+) that alloys in the powdered form containing more than 8 per cent and up to about 35 per cent Ni decompose into a stable heterogeneous mix-

Colombia is 11th largest coal producing nation in the world, and the world?s fifth largest coal exporter. But while most of Colombia?s coal is mined at large modern surface mines located near the Caribbean coast, there are also underground mines that produce high-grade metallurgical coal. These mines employ traditional hand-loading techniques in a variety of geologic environments, and they have some of the highest accident rates of any Colombian industry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been collaborating with POSITIVA, the primary provider of worker?s compensation insurance to the Colombian underground coal industry, to reduce the economic and social cost of rock falls in these mines. The specific goals of the collaboration are to 1) document practices and conditions in Colombian underground coal mines, 2) identify relevant international best practices, and 3) provide recommendations for developing a national campaign to reduce fatalities and injuries associated with roof falls. NIOSH conducted a survey of seven underground coal mines in four separate coalfields. Five of the mines were characterized by steep dips and weak roof and floor rock. The coal was loaded by hand at all seven mines, though two employed partially mechanized longwall techniques. Wood posts were by far the most common ground support. Roof bolts were not observed in use at any of the mines, and they are unlikely to replace timbers any time soon. While long-term entries generally appeared to be adequately supported, the survey found that less attention was paid to the temporary support that is installed right after the coal is removed. This temporary support is critical for protecting the workers from rock falls, however, because with hand-loading mining methods most of the activity takes place between the permanent supports and face. The study concluded that improving the temporary support in the working faces would be the most effective way to reduce the number of rock fall injuries. The key principle should be that every worker is protected by planned roof support at all times. Ground Support Management Plans, consisting of specific rules about when, where, and what roof support is to be installed, should be the focus of the campaign. Each Plan should be tailored to a specific mine based on the geologic conditions and mining methods in use. The Plan provides miners with clear, simple rules that can be easily understood, while management can easily check to see if it is being followed. Ground Support Management Plans will also provide the campaign with a concrete focus for the necessary cultural change.

General. Copper, the first metal used by man, today is the third in consumption after iron and aluminum. Compared to these it is relatively rare, with less than 0.01% of the earth's crust copper, 8% aluminum, and 5% iron. Nevertheless. our modern civilization is heavily dependent upon copper because of its high conductivity and resistance to corrosion, ease of working, durability, wide range of properties by virtue of its readiness to form alloys with other metals, and its attractive colors and texture that make it so desirable for many crafts and arts. These attributes explain why copper is chosen for a long list of uses, including electrical wiring, switchgear, and bus bars; piping, roofing, and siding; and manufactures of brass, bronze, and other alloys. The fact that copper ore is mined in nearly all parts of the world is significant. Its importance is shown in Table I, which gives figures on world production from 1968 to 1977. In the Free World, North and South America and Africa are preeminent. The table also shows the generally upward trend of production in this period; accurate figures for 1978 and 1979 from the same source are not yet available (1980), but it is certain that major environmental, economical, and political factors continued to disturb the industry in those years and into 1980.

"Quantitative analysis of mine-wide subsidence at the kilometer scale and details of stress distribution about an advancing longwall face are estimated using an adaptation of the finite element method. The method is well suited to the tasks at hand. For greater realism, variability of strata properties is taken into account as are the effects of joints and cleats on elastic moduli and strengths. Evolution of pillar stress and entry closure remote from the face is readily quantified in a series of analyses that simulate face advance. Computed results compare favorably with the evolution of closure measurements about an instrumented pillar in a two-entry headgate. The appropriateness of the finite element method is confirmed. This method is based on first principles that avoid empirical schemes of uncertain applicability and numerical models “calibrated” by fitting computer output to mine measurements.INTRODUCTIONMine-induced seismicity is intimately related to strata mechanics associated with longwall coal mining and room and pillar mining, as well. Strata deformed beyond an elastic limit often tend to fail rapidly by brittle fracture and, thus, to emit acoustic signals in the form of elastic waves. Understanding the induced seismicity in coal mining offers the potential for early warning of hazardous conditions. Many years of experience with seismic phenomena associated with hardrock mining suggest considerable complexity should be expected. However, recent coal mine studies (Pariseau, 2014; Pariseau, 2015; Pariseau and McCarter, 2015; Pariseau and McCarter, 2016) have shown high correlations of seismicity with element failures in finite element simulations. The main lesson learned from these studies is one elaborated by Iannacchione et al (2005); deviation from normal activity is an early warning of ground control difficulty. For example, an abrupt increase in seismic event rate, or equivalently, an increase in element failure in finite element simulation of panel advance, is a cautionary indication for ground control. Present and past study results demonstrate the effectiveness of finite element simulations for mine design and early detection of potential ground control issues."

Some time ago, at ameeting of the Institute Prof. J. W. Richards1 said, "I take exception to the statement that all the factors in the production of electrolytic zinc were known long ago.... There is possible in my opinion an improvement of perhaps 50 per cent. in the new electrolytic processes." An examination of the literature of the subject will show the justness of Professor Richards' contention. The work of the earlier investigators was carried on in the shadow of difficulties that, today, are hardly more than memories. We seldom hear now of zinc sponge, that bête noir of the electrolytic-zinc pioneers. Zinc sponge was the name given to a peculiar, soft, black, non-adherent form of zinc deposit that was utterly useless for melting into ingot form. At the big plant at Cockle Creek, New South Wales, in 1897, Edgar Ashcroft2 said that the solution in the plant would suddenly, and without ascertainable cause, go' "bad" and begin to deposit spongy zinc. The most delicate, even spectroscopic, methods of analysis were unable to detect any difference between "good" solution and "bad" solution; either form might change to the other on being kept for a while. When it is added that an outbreak of this insidious disease (which appeared to be infectious, or at least contagious) could be dealt with only by discarding the solution and washing out all tanks and pipe lines, some idea may be gathered of the troubles of the zinc electrometallurgist in what may be spoken of as the "sponge age" of electrolytic zinc. Potash deposits of Oligocene age are found in the Upper Rhine Graben of Alsace (France), and in the Catalonian Basin of Spain. These deposits are found in a wide range of structural settings. Reserves are large, and the production of potash salts is an important phase in the economy of each of these countries.

Exploration for ore deposits in southeastern Missouri in the 1950's resulted in the important discovery of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955. Further discoveries in the area led to the naming of the Viburnum trend. It has sometimes been referred to as the "New Lead belt" to distinguish it from older lead-producing areas to the east. As presently developed, the "trend" is 35 miles long, running north and south about 50 miles west of the Lead belt. Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined, with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chalcopyrite (copper) and silver recovered as economic by-products. The ore body is as much as 140 feet thick and 1,200 feet wide, and is found in the Bonneterre Dolomite (Upper Cambrian) at depths ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet. Since its discovery many companies have engaged in exploration and several major companies have developed new mines and constructed mills and a smelter in the area. The first mine in the Viburnum trend came on stream in 1960, but as more mines came on stream and others reached capacity, lead production increased to the point that the Southeast Missouri Lead district produced 432,576 tons of lead in 1970 to become the world's largest lead-producing region (Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, 1971). The Viburnum trend area with its rolling, heavily forested hills and numerous clear running streams is in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. Until the recent development of its mineral resources, the area was sparsely populated and nearly unmarked by the activities of man. Destacaram-se novas composições para tintas e vernizes e processos de endurecimento e proteção à corrosão nos materiais metálicos. EUA, Japão e China figuram como os países que sediam o maior número de desenvolvimentos enquanto América do Norte, Europa e Ásia apontam como os principais mercados de interesse. No entanto, o estágio de desenvolvimento tecnológico sugere incerteza futura frente a novas soluções, sendo necessários estudos adicionais para confirmar as tendências observadas.

"In the 1990s metal prices were trending in a long-term decline and the usual cost-cutting exercises were adopted. Cuts to research and development made innovation difficult and the outlook was grim. But necessity is a strong motivator, and these conditions spurred the Mine to Mill movement that optimised across organisational ‘silos’ and utilised new technology tools, innovative software and increased computing power. Many applications of Mine to Mill exploited the fact that comminution is usually the site processing bottleneck and blasting is more efficient at breaking rock than grinding. This approach sought to: understand and characterise rock breakage from mining to the milldevelop models and simulators for blast design, fragmentation, crusher and mill circuitsdevelop tools to measure in real time the particle size distribution of rocks on run-of-mine (ROM) muck piles, at the primary crusher truck dump pocket and on conveyorsensure effective communication across the silos between geologists, blast design engineers, mining engineers and metallurgists.These methods and the technology tools available in the 1990s were widely adopted at numerous sites around the world with significant benefits. Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill throughput increases of 10–20 per cent were common. This was the advance the industry desperately needed. It was low capital cost; it was obvious. It was here to stay.Except, in too many cases, it didn’t. In the minerals price boom of the 2000s Mine to Mill was no longer necessary to ‘survive’, even though it was still good business. Some operations, including some of the early success stories, slipped back to old habits of optimising within organisation silos instead of across them. Fortunately, other operators still embraced Mine to Mill and developed new techniques. Mine to Mill was still successful, but not as widely adopted as we had expected it to be. Now the boom has ended and operations are again under cost pressure. Since these are the same circumstances that created Mine to Mill, it seems time to achieve the wider adoption. Since the 1990s many new or advanced technology tools are now available for Mine to Mill projects: blasthole sensors, new explosives formulations, new blasting techniques and modelling, ore tracking devices, improved image analysis to determine size, texture and colour of coarse ore, grade sensors, whole-stream simulation tools, and even more powerful computing hardware and data analysis software. If we could achieve so much in the 1990s, how much more can we achieve today when we have the same imperative, the same potential and a larger number of high technology tools?Citation:Cameron, P, Drinkwater, D and Pease, J, 2016. The choice of equipment to be applied to a given installation by the Application Engineer begins with the data as presented to him by the user. This point in the relationship establishes a communication link, which will decide whether or not the correct piece of Overhead Equipment is applied at the most economic advantage to the user. The role played by the user cannot be minimized. No one knows better than he, just what work he expects to accomplish with this piece of machinery. However, all too often, he oversimplifies the requirements, and along with minimal crane and building parameters, merely refers to one of the following crane classifications as defined by The Crane Manufacturing Association of America, as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. This approach places the ultimate user in an unfair position, since he has then assumed the status of the machinery designer and must, therefore, assume the responsibility of the success or failure of the operation of that piece of machinery. If the user selects a Class "C" crane for his job requirement, when actually a Class "B" crane can adequately handle the work load, he is not offering the most economic solution to his company and added little to the cranes service capabilities.

ABSTRACT The options for reducing the carbon footprint of energy use in mining fall into three categories of activity: i) reducing demand, ii) improving energy utilization, and iii) adopting low carbon energy technologies. In addition to the environmental imperative, the economic case for these activities gains higher priority as the prices of electricity, gas, and liquid fuels increase. Low-carbon, energy-saving technology options that are available to mining industry companies lead to projects with return rates that must compete alongside other capital-intensive projects considered by mining company boards. Energy projects frequently involve longer payback periods and lower rates of return than those of competing bids for capital, such as new mineral property developments. For energy services companies that specialize in the financing, construction, efficient operation, and maintenance of energy projects, the same returns and payback periods can be considered acceptable or even attractive.

Corpos de prova de ferro com diferentes níveis de pureza – um de pureza ultraelevada, dois de pureza elevada e um puro comercial – foram testados mecanicamente com diferentes taxas de deformação no âmbito de um antigo projeto. O objetivo era obter a resistência à tração de cada material e verificar a influência das impurezas e da taxa de deformação nas propriedades mecânicas do ferro de pureza ultraelevada. Para melhor compreender os resultados desses ensaios de tração, uma caracterização microscópica detalhada dessas amostras é realizada através deste trabalho. Para tal, foram analisadas as superfícies lateral e de fratura dos corpos de prova de tração no estereomicroscópio e no Microscópio Eletrônico de Varredura (MEV). O dano foi analisado em seções longitudinais ao longo do eixo de tração utilizando o microscópio óptico; a estrutura dos grãos deformados foi investigada por meio da técnica de microscopia EBSD (Difração de elétrons retroespalhados). Microestrutura, padrão de deformação, orientação dos grãos e as características das superfícies lateral e de fratura são então comparadas quanto ao processo de fabricação, nível de pureza e taxa de deformação.

Thirty six different commodities were recorded from 3708 mineral occurrences in the Atherton 1:250 000 Sheet area, mapped by personnel of the Queensland Department of Resource Industries. Tin, occurring in 56% of all mineral occurrences, is the most common, followed by copper, tungsten, silver, lead, gold, fluorite molybdenum, zinc and antimony. The densest area of mineral occurrences is the Herberton Mineral Field, one of the most intensively mined areas in the state.The majority of occurrences in the sheet area are fracture, fault or shear related vein or lenticular deposits, with subordinate types being pipe, skarn, endogreisen, disseminated and porphyry copper deposits. However the larger mines in the area are commonly of the subordinate types including the Red Dome gold-copper skarn, the Wolfram Camp and Bamford Hill tungsten- m olydbenum endogreisens, and the Vulcan pipe tin deposit. Significant gold prospects occur in quartz-antimony veins, breccia pipes and skarn deposits associated with rhyolitic porphyry dykes. A fluorite-gold association has been noted in several areas on the western side of the sheet.Mineralised fractures are predominantly oriented in a NNW direction which is the major trend in the Hodgkinson Province. Secondary N and NE directions are also present.

In the last decades, High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) has gained significant importance in hard rock processing due to numerous metallurgical benefits such as energy savings, particle weakening, preferential damage of coarse particles, and preferential comminution-liberation. There are a limited numbers of lab-scale HPGR units throughout the world. The laboratory-scale HPGR machine at the University of Utah is first-ever lab-scale machine designed by late Dr Klaus Schönert, the inventor of HPGR. This HPGR is constructed with two counter-rotating hardened tool steel rolls, each 200 mm in diameter and 100 mm in width. The HPGR unit is equipped with eight sensors and a robust control system, which serves as an ideal system for fundamental studies and lab-scale testing. In HPGR operation, throughput, energy and product size distribution are intricately linked to specific grinding pressure, roll gap and rolls speed. The nip angle existing during the operation determines the volume of feed material above the rolls that is pulled into rolls without slip. In this paper, scale-up factors and some of the existing models have been reviewed. A number of experiments have been carried out with limestone and a slag material. The influence of operating variables and their complex relationship has been studied.

[A study of mining methods and underground practices as they influence injury from falls of roof or coal reveals data as to the location in the mine where such injuries occur with the greatest frequency and as to some of the methods and practices which are in use for the prevention of injury. This paper, which presents statistics bearing on the frequency and place of occurrence of accidents and, discusses regulations and practices which have resulted in a low frequency rate from falls of roof and coal in a few representative mines takes its information from mine-accident reports and from the results of studies conducted in a group of 80 mines in the bituminous coal fields of western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. The statistics from this group of mines cover periods of one to four years but average 2 years and 7 months. During this time these mines produced over 110,400,000 tons of coal, equivalent to one-fifth of the annual production of all bituminous mines in the United States. The coal beds of the mines in the group studied are mostly flat, with local pitches of moderate degree. A number of mining plans are in use, each of which follows a general system of multiple entries, cross entries, and rooms. Room and pillar in panels either advancing, retreating, or half advance and half retreat and the block systems are employed. The methods of pillar extraction are by splitting, slabbing, pocket-and-stump, and open end. It is hoped that in presenting some of the details of the methods and practices at particular mines of this group which have commendable records in the prevention of injury some good may accrue to many other bituminous mines which 'nave similar natural conditions.]

Processing of Egyptian barite ore with a composition of 85.5% BaSO4; 2.75%SiO2;1.56%Fe2O3 and 5.1% Al2O3 was performed with the aim to prepare pure barium salts. The process took place through pelletization-solid state reduction and leaching steps. Each of these steps was optimized. Pure barium sulphate (99% < 0.82µm) and carbonate (99%<0.75µm )were the final products. This article deals with the reduction process that occur whn coal was added to the ore during pelletization in the ratio of 5:1 stoichiometry. Optimum reduction of pellets of 8-12mm in diameter was achieved after 60 minutes at 1050oC and under a rate of 5 lmin-1 of nitrogen atmosphere, where 87.79% of the ore was reduced. The kinetic studies showed that the reduction process could be modeled according to the core mechanism of diffusion control in which the effective diffusivity is based on the surface area of unreacted ore. The activation energy calculated was 92.7 kJmol-1.

Success of the environmentally benign semiconductor manufacturing depends on the cost-effective integration of the principles of reduce, recover, reuse and recycle from source material to final product disposal. Increasing demand combined with current shortage of polysilicon provided unique opportunities to recover the silicon waste, caused by various defects, in wafer manufacturing process. Current practices relating to recovery and reuse of waste silicon produced, from crystal growth process to finally polished and epitaxially deposited silicon wafer, at Mitsubishi Silicon America is presented. Future plan to recycle the process generated silicon fines produced during the intermediate steps of the wafer manufacturing process such as grinding, slicing, lapping and polishing is also discussed.
