The direct investment role of Middle Eastern oil producing countries in future world-wide mineral development probably will be a limited one for the next five years. Their needs and their longer range economic objectives substantially preclude any such risk taking ventures. There is, of course, the possibility of political in- vestment. One hears many rumors and doomsday calculations of what the Arabs might do with the rising accumulation of surplus funds. Up to now, this kind of investment has been more in rhetoric than in money. For the most part, oil producing countries of the Middle East have been, and will be, investing surplus funds with strong emphasis on the preservation of capital. They will seek security first and yield second just like any other prudent investor. In several respects, this is regrettable. A direct infusion of risk capital into mineral development, especially in the Third World countries, is a constructive way of enhancing their earning power which many desperately need just to stave off starvation. It would also be a good way of eliminating material shortages in the industrialized world. Most important of all, it would help to ultimately reduce inflation without imposing the hardship of recession. So why isn't it done?

A German coal planer was put in operation in the Keystone mine of the Eastern Associated Coal Corp. , Keystone , W. Va . , in August 1960 . At present , the planer is mining in the fourth panel . The blocks of coal mined were 340 by 1,900 feet in panel 1 , 340 by 1,660 feet in panel 2 , 590 by 1,900 feet in panel 3 , and panel 4 , currently being mined , is 590 by 1,900 feet . Almost one- half million tons of coal have been mined from these four panels . An 11 - man crew handles the complete planer operation and produces an average of 500 tons of clean coal per shift . Self - advancing hydraulic props are used to support the roof over the entire face . Roof control and action on all of the panels has been highly satisfactory . During periods of extreme pressure , some additional support is required in the tail entry where evidence of weight from the retreating longwall extends about 200 feet outby the face . The time lost from production by moving equipment between panels has been reduced steadily . The move from panel 3 to panel 4 required 5 days , but it is believed that even that time could be reduced .

Refratários de alta alumina apresentam boa refratariedade, elevada resistência mecânica em altas temperaturas, boa resistência à variação bruscas de temperatura sem se romper sendo utilizados em revestimento de panelas e válvulas siderúrgicas devido sua propriedade anfótero e ter aplicações sobre à ação de escórias básicas. Neste trabalho procurou-se avaliar o efeito de adições de 1,5; 3,0 e 4,5%p. de Nb2O5 em refratário de alta alumina, estes obtidos a partir de uma mistura de diversos tipos de alumina, 5,0 %p. ZrO2 nanométrica (TZ-8Y) e agregado de mulita, sinterizados em temperaturas de 1400 e 1600 °C. Como nestes refratários a ZrO2 não surte o efeito de microtrincamento, a formação de fase vítrea a partir de Nb2O5 e a incorporação de agregados ao refratário foram fundamentais nas propriedades obtidas. Foram avaliadas propriedades tecnológicas como densidade e porosidade aparente pelo método de Arquimedes, formação de fases por difração de raios-X e análise microestrutural por microscopia eletrônica de varredura e resistência ao choque térmico.

Abstract-The Amazon region is characterized by the development of deep chemical weathering represented by widespread lateritic covers and soils. Two distinct periods of laterite formation can be distinguished: mature laterites from the Eocene-Oligocene (and locally from the end of the Cretaceous), and immature laterites from the Pleistocene. The older laterites occur on plateau landscapes, and the younger ones on widespread hilly to flat lowlands. Both types show complete or truncated profiles, generally covered by deep yellow to brown topsoils. The mature laterite profiles contain high concentrations of gibbsite and/or aluminum phosphate, whereas the immature ones are poor in these minerals. The Amazon region is rich in mineral deposits related to lateritic profiles. Some mineral deposits are of primary origin but were concentrated to economic grades by lateritic processes. The most important ore deposits are of iron, aluminum (bauxite), kaolin, manganese, gold, nickel, copper and phosphate. These are mainly related to mature profiles. The wide spectrum of ore deposits and mineralogical and geochemical complexity of the Amazon laterites has been promoted by: (1) the prevalence of ideal conditions for laterite formation throughout much of the Tertiary; (2) the presence of varied basement lithologies due to contrasting geological environments; and (3) a variety of epigenetic alteration types. The lateritic profiles show a well-developed ore zonation which is related to specific lateritic horizons. Iron and gold deposits occur in the ferruginous horizon, which is nearest the surface; the central aluminous horizon hosts bauxites, aluminum phosphate, strontium and gold; and the lower clayey horizon contains deposits of manganese, nickel, copper and kaolin. Resistate phases which residually accumulate throughout entire profiles include titanium (as ilmenite and anatase), chromium (as chromite), tin (as cassiterite), yttrium (as xenotime), and niobium (mainly as ilmenorutile). Epigenetic alteration, caused by swamp environments developed above truncated lateritic profiles, has led to the formation of high-grade kaolin and refractory bauxites. The laterites in the Amazon region contain most of all known kinds of ore mineralization related to laterite processes.

Neste trabalho foi estudado o efeito da variação da densidade de corrente, temperatura e pH do banho eletrolítico na eletrodeposição da liga Ni-Mo-P utilizando citrato de sódio como agente complexante em função do comportamento anticorrosivo da mesma, da composição química e morfologia dos revestimentos. A caracterização das camadas foi feita por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e energia dispersiva de raios-X (EDX). Os ensaios de corrosão foram realizados à temperatura ambiente em NaCl 0,1 M por polarização potenciodiâmica linear (PPL). Como ferramenta de otimização foi utilizado um planejamento fatorial completo 23 associado a metodologia da superfície de resposta (MSR). As propriedades de corrosão e composição química dos revestimentos de Ni-Mo-P obtidos mostraram ser dependentes da densidade de corrente, temperatura e pH do banho eletrolítico. A ausência de trincas foi verificada para revesimentos com baixo conteúdo de molibdênio e mostrou ser necessário para obtenção de eletrodepósitos com boas propriedades de resistência à corrosão. Os resultados revelaram que o revestimento que apresentou melhor resistência à corrosão foi obtido em densidade de corrente 100 mA cm-2, temperatura de 40°C e pH 9,0 com composição de 87 wt.% Ni, 6 wt.% Mo e 7 wt.% P e sua superfice exibiu morfologia nodular.

Discontinuous changes of Young's modulus, internal friction, coefficient of expansion, electrical resistivity, and thermoelectric power are evidence for a transition in chromium near 37OC. Although the X-ray diffraction pattern gives no clue, a difference between the thermal expansivity and the temperature dependence of the lattice parameter suggests a crystal-lographic change. Young's modulus data disclosed another transition near THE thermal dependence of a number of proper- ties of chromium indicates a transition occurring over a temperature range near room temperature. Bridgman' noted this first from a minimum in the electrical resistivity near 12°C. In a sample of greater purity, Sochtig' observed the minimum at 41 °C. Erfling3 reported an inflection in the thermal expansivity curve at 36°C. These temperature-dependence curves are reversible with no hysteresis being detected. No discontinuity or inflection has been observed in the heat capacity' or the paramagnetic susceptibility.' Likewise, no one has noted a change in crystal symmetry. In the present investigation Young's modulus, internal friction, coefficient of expansion, electrical resistivity, illustrated in Fig. 1, lattice constant, Fig. 2, thermal electromotive force, Fig. 3, and paramagnetic susceptibility, Fig. 4, were measured over an extended temperature range. The samples were prepared in two ways: (1) By cold pressing a sintered electrolytic powder compact,' and (2) by electroforming from an aqueous solution. The electroformed samples were prepared by R. A. Ehrhardt and G. Bittrich by plating on copper or nickel tubes from an aqueous solution according to the method of Brenner, Burkhead, and Jennings.' The pressed powder samples (method 1) were finally annealed at 1400°C in purified helium: the electroformed samples, packed in powdered chromium, were vacuum-annealed at 1000°C. From the composition of the original powder' the purity of the pressed powder samples is estimated to be 99.8 pct Cr. Spectrochemical analysis furnished by E. K. Jaycox, revealed only slight traces of impurities in the electroformed sample (less than 0.001 pct), neither iron nor nickel being detected. Chromium deposited by this method is reported to contain approximately 0.05 pct 0.- Methods and Data Young's Modulus: For measurement of Young's modulus, an annealed, pressed powder sample, 0.114 x0.237x1.845 in., and an electroformed sample, 0.10 in. od, 0.01 in. id, and 1.86 in. long, were prepared. The resonant frequencies of the rod samples in forced longitudinal vibration were measured at a series of temperatures from —192" to 200°C by a method previously de~cribed.6,7 Because the samples were nonferromagnetic, iron- silicon or molybdenum permalloy tips (0.013 in. thick) were soldered to the ends. The softening temperature of the solder limited the temperature of measurement. Young's modulus, E,, of chromium at temperature, T, may be calculated from the resonant frequency of the composite rod, f,; the thickness of the tips, t; the length of the chromium sample at 25°C, l,.; the density of chromium at 25°C, pc (7.20 g per cc);5 and the thermal expansivity, Al/l25. Modulus differences for two temperatures, ET and E, are accurate to +0.002x10" dynes per cm2. ET = 4PAlc+2tyf Young's modulus at 25°C, Fig. la, is 28.2~10" dynes per cm' (40.8xlO" si) in wrought chromium (upper curve). The modulus of the electroformed sample is apparently lower due to cracks. From the modulus measurements two transitions were observed: one with a critical temperature at 37°C, the other at —152°C. Internal Friction: The internal friction, 1/Q, was determined from the width, Af, of the strain amplitude-frequency curve at 0.707 times the strain amplitude at resonance;' the internal friction, 1/Q, then equals Af/f. Fig. lb shows a sharp peak in internal friction at 38°C. The internal friction of the electroformed sample had a similar maximum. Thermal Expansion: The expansivity measurements, shown in Fig. 2, covering the temperature range —195" to +400°C were made by D. MacNair in an interferometric dilatometer8 sing a sample consisting of three pyramids 0.25 in. high prepared from wrought electrolytic chromium. Below —120°C the experimental points deviated up to ±2x10 from the drawn expansivity curve in Fig. 2 because of decreased precision of the quartz wedge thermometer at low temperatures. Near 38°C the thermal expansivity curve, Fig. 2, goes through an inflection corresponding to a minimum in the coefficient of expansion, Fig. ld, and a relative volume decrease on heating. Electrical Resistivity: The variation of electrical resistivity with temperature measured by the po-tentiometric method is also shown in Fig. l. The resistivity of the wrought chromium (upper curve) at 20°C is 13.6 microhm-cm; of electroformed chromium (lower curve) 12.8 microhm-cm. The lower value reflects higher purity and agrees closely with a published value." A minimum at 40°C occurs in the resistivity curves of both samples. No conclusive evidence for a transition near — 150°C was observed, but the points, Fig. 1, appear to deviate from a smooth curve between —120" and —160°C.

"The High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is an increasingly popular energy efficient solution for comminution of competent ore deposits that primarily competes with conventional crushers and tumbling mills. A significant barrier to increased adoption of HPGRs is the requirement for large amounts (one tonne or more) of sample for pilot testing which may not be feasible for most early staged projects.Various researchers have worked towards developing piston-die and JK drop weight tests to model and predict the energy requirements for an HPGR. Two small scale laboratory test procedures (the SMC test (Morrell, 2009) and the piston press tests (Davaanyam, 2015)) have been developed in recent years to provide necessary information to size an HPGR.These two methods were used to estimate the required specific energy for an HPGR unit and compared to HPGR pilot scale test results from a copper deposit. The comparison provides insight into the benefits and limitations of these tests.INTRODUCTIONHigh pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) have gained popularity in recent years because of their energy efficiency in comminution. Various researchers have suggested that approximately 50–80% of the total energy consumed in a mineral processing plant is used by the comminution equipment (Haque, 1999; Abouzeid & Fuerstenau, 2009; Wang, 2013). Haque (1999) showed that the efficiency of grinding equipment can be as low as 1%. Due to the energy intensive nature of comminution, mining industry has been forced to explore alternative energy efficient processes.An HPGR based circuit has been shown to be 10–25% more energy efficient than a conventional SABC circuit (Von Michaelis, 2009; Wang, 2013). A significant barrier to the increased adaptation of HPGRs is the requirement for a large amount of sample for pilot testing (up to 5 tons), even on a prefeasibility level. Numerous studies have been performed to utilize piston press test to analyze the performance of the HPGR circuit and to predict the energy consumption for an industrial application. This paper uses two small scale laboratory test procedures, the SMC test and a piston press test, to compare the energy requirement to the pilot HPGR data."

On constate qu'un maximum d'environ 80% de la magnésie totale peut être activé dans certains rejets d'amiante du Québec et Ie degré d'activation dépend de la provenance.vIntroductionOn sait depuis longtemps que la serpentine, Mg3Si2O5(OH)4, un silicate hydroxylé de magnésium, devient amorphe lorsqu'elle perd de I'eau d'hydratation entre 600 et 700 °C. La serpentine ainsi calcinée est alors dissociée en magnésie et en silice. Cette magnésie, dite active, est soluble dans un acide faible ou même dans les solutions de sels d'ammonium.Plusieurs precédés chimiques ont été proposés afin d'extraire sous forme de composés magnésiens la magnésie de la serpentine. La plupart de ces procédés comportent une activation par calcination de la serpentine préalablement à une Iixiviation par un acide ou par une solution d'un sel d'ammonium.Malgré la contamination par Ie fer et par d'autres éléments, les compositions chimiques des rejets de différentes mines d 'amiante du Québec, présentées au tableau 1, sont très proches de la serpentine typique. Puisque Ie degré d'activation de la magnésie varie grandement d'une serpentine à I'autre lors de la calcination, la première étape de la recherche sur la transformation chimique des rejets d'amiante du Québec se résume à une étude de leurs comportements thermochimiques."

This Code for the Valuation of Mineral Properties (the “CIMVAL Code”) is the result of a review more than a decade after the release in 2003 of the “Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties” (the "2003 Standards"). The purpose of the review is to update the 2003 Standards to reflect domestic valuation, international valuation, and regulatory developments. The CIMVAL Code was adopted by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum (the "CIM") Council on November 29, 2019. The CIMVAL Code supersedes the 2003 Standards. The 2003 Standards were dated February 2003 and were adopted by the CIM Council on March 9, 2003 as the first comprehensive set of standards for Valuation of Mineral Properties in the Canadian mining industry. The 2003 Standards followed recommendations of the Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission, where in its Final Report (January 1999), the CIM was specifically asked to form a committee of valuation practitioners to review and advise on standards for the Valuation of Mineral Properties. The Special Committee on Valuation of Mineral Properties ("CIMVAL") was created on May 5, 1999 with the mandate to recommend standards and guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties to be used by the mining industry in general. The CIMVAL Code is limited to the Valuation of Mineral Properties (including any interests therein) and does not cover valuation of corporations or other entities that hold Mineral Properties as assets. The CIMVAL Code does not cover petroleum and related assets. CIMVAL recommends that the CIMVAL Code be followed for all Valuations of Mineral Properties, including those required by securities administrators and stock exchanges. However, when a Valuation is required under the applicable rules of securities administrators or stock exchanges, such rules prevail to the extent of any inconsistency.

This paper highlights the use of an innovative mine production scheduling scheme for grade-control planning tasks that take into consideration grade-model uncertainty. The scheduling exercise has been carried out with the help of a multiobjective genetic algorithm (MOGa) for the production scheduling operations. The underlying motive behind the use of MOGa has been the generation of a set of pareto optimal solutions to meet the goals of the target-grade specifications for the considered multiple grade attributes. Several new concepts related to MOGa formulation, in particular the mutation operation and the convergence criteria of this algorithm, are proposed in this paper. The modeling of grade uncertainty into the scheduling outputs has also been incorporated through a set of conditional simulated grade maps. The proposed scheme of production scheduling operations has been applied for the grade-control planning operations in an iron ore mine to meet the targeted grade specifications of iron, silica and alumina, and a risk analysis has been performed to this end.

SEVERAL recent determinations of the melting S point of pure chromium have been reported which give values of 1845°C1; 1895°C,² 1930°C,³ 1860°C,' and 1890°C.5 because of this wide spread of values, it appeared desirable to make one additional attempt to obtain a more accurate, reliable figure. bloom and Grantx recently reported a phase transformation in chromium:.--- it was desired to check this, too, in the course of checking the melting point. To accomplish this, a much higher purity chromium was required. Electrolytic chromium containing about 0.5 pct 0 was crushed to a finer size and was then annealed in highly purified, dried hydrogen at 1375°C for 100 hr. This treatment produced chromium with about 0.008 pct 0, 0.002 pct N, and negligible carbon. The balance of the impurities was 0.3 pct Fe, 0.03 pct Si, 0.004 pct S, and less than 0.001 pct Mo. This chromium was melted in a stabilized zirconia crucible under pre-purified argon, using induction heating. Temperature measurements were made with annealed wolfram-molybdenum thermocouples and a Leeds and Northrup Speedomax Recording Potentiometer. The thermocouples were annealed for 1 min in hydrogen at a temperature of about 2400°C. Each leg of the thermocouple was immersed in an ice-water mixture using mechanical connectors to the lead wires. The thermocouple tip was immersed in the molten chromium in a zirconia protection tube which introduces an error of about 3°C as a temperature drop through the walls of the tube. The weight of chromium was about 183 g. The dimensions of the melt in the crucible were about 1.25 in. diam x 2 in. high. The tip of the thermocouple was held about ½ in. from the bottom of the crucible. Two new thermocouples were used with the above set-up giving the results shown in Table I. Since this chromium is purer than that used by Greenaway, Johnstone and McQuillan,' by Carlile et al.,4 and other investigators,²,3 it is believed to be the more accurate. Thermocouple aging effects which are believed responsible for the high value of 1930°C³ were avoided in this work. This value of 1903°C is correct to about ±10°C. The right hand column lists the temperature of the a ? ß transformation on heating and the ß ? a on cooling.3 A sample curve is shown in Fig. 1. The value so determined is 1840°C + 15°C. FEW persons outside of the foundry trade have any conception of the great variety of sands now regularly specified and furnished, nor of the differences in foundry practice frequently resulting from apparently minor changes in sands. Conditions in each locality where the sands are mined and prepared necessitate special equipment designed to perform the work efficiently. The description that follows of the foundry sand producing operations is typical of the areas in New York and New Jersey, and particularly refers to the operations of the George F. Pettinos Co.

The Minah silver-lead mine in the Wickes district, Jefferson County, Mont., produced substantial quantities of silver-lead ores in the 1890's. The mine has been abandoned since the "silver panic" of the early 1900's. As a part of the Bureau of Mines: program to develop new sources of lead to overcome the growing shortages of that metal, a development project was started at the Minh mine in April 1946 and continued until June 1947, during which 5,600 feet of angledozer trenching and. 1,093 feet of core drilling were completed on the main vein and nearby parallel veins: As a result of this work, interest in the property was stimulated and private operators are now engaged in reopening the mine. This report discusses the past history, geologic setting, and the recent and early operations of the mine.

Anglo Gold AshantiÆs Sunrise Dam operation is located in Western Australia approximately 55 km south of the town of Laverton. Currently, the mine is producing from both its open pit and underground operations and is planning a significant step change in underground production as the pit phases out. The mine ventilation system is arranged in three independent ventilation districts: Astro, GQ and Cosmo. The future ventilation infrastructure requires significant upgrades to keep up with the increased tonnage. In the short term, increased production is planned for the GQ district as well as for Vogue, which is an extension in the Cosmo ventilation district. In the long term, however, Vogue is likely to become the centre of attention for mining activity.This paper explores several ventilation scenarios which include upgrading the existing fan stations, rentals, establishing a common ventilation backbone, and establishing new upcast infrastructure for GQ to support the short-term production increase. These developments were modelled using ventilation network simulation software to determine airflow distribution and fan operating points for each option. For the GQ area, with its short-term increase in production, each option is evaluated for total owning cost by considering capital and operating costs over a three-year period. For Vogue, which is to become the main focus of mining in the future, a different strategy is followed in analysing the ventilation requirements. Instead of considering different short-term options, a number of staged upgrades are considered to achieve the desired production rates.This paper summarises the planning criteria, airflow requirements, ventilation infrastructure requirements, and economic analysis associated with the conceptual ventilation system design. It highlights how the best short-term ventilation infrastructure upgrades can be selected when considered in isolation but highlights that long-term production planning can have an effect on the decisions made in the short-term.CITATION:van den Berg, L, Podreka, M and Merry, P, 2013. O mercado de Siderurgia no Brasil vive um momento de pressão causado pelas quedas dos preços internacionais e agravado por fatores internos como a redução no consumo, aumento do custo de energia e tributação elevada. Tendo em vista que, ao menos no curto prazo, não há perspectiva de melhoria, as indústrias do setor se mobilizam para adequar a esta nova realidade. A sobrevivência em um cenário de alta competitividade é garantida reduzindo custos de produção e manutenção e buscando aumentar a produtividade sem, entretanto, expandir a capacidade produtiva. Para atingir estes objetivos as indústrias focam em pequenas melhorias operacionais, com investimentos em pequenas modernizações e otimizações de processos existentes, em detrimento de grandes investimentos em expansões. Neste contexto observa-se um aumento na relevância do software de automação, que surge como alternativa para realização de melhorias, pois possuem custo relativamente baixo em comparação com reformas a nível mecânico e podem proporcionar ganhos importantes de eficiência e qualidade. Este artigo apresenta um estudo da utilização de metodologias ágeis de desenvolvimento de software para realização de melhoria contínua em processos industriais. Como exemplo de aplicação é apresentado o trabalho de otimização do software de automação de um laminador de alumínio com foco no aumento de sua taxa de utilização. A meta foi buscar um ganho de produtividade garantindo os mesmos padrões de segurança originais dos equipamentos e com impacto mínimo nas atividades produtivas.

A lead-zinc-pyrite flotation middling was pressure oxidised to give residues containing iron hydroxy sulphates (a mixture of basic iron sulphate (BIS) and a hydrated iron sulphate (HIS)) and lead sulphate. Direct thiourea leaching of this residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold and silver, but thiourea consumption was high (56 kg/t) because of soluble iron(M) in the residue. Attempts were made to decrease the thiourea consumption by removing the water-soluble iron(M) or reducing it to iron(II). Water washing of the pressure oxidation residue removed most of the hydrated iron sulphate but little of the basic iron sulphate. Iron removal was only 12-20 per cent, depending on the number of washes, from one sample which was low in HIS, and 40-45 per cent in another which was high in HIS. Iron extraction was not appreciably increased by using dilute sulphuric acid (with or without additions of sodium sulphite), dilute phosphoric acid, or sodium chloride solution (150 g/L NaCI). Direct thiourea leaching of the water-washed residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold but only 49 per cent of silver, with a thiourea consumption of 27 kg/t. However, the application of a water wash followed by reduction of dissolved iron(III) with sodium sulphite in the presence of thiourea, and then thiourea leaching resulted in over 98 per cent extraction of gold and silver for a thiourea consumption of 26 kg/t.

[This report describes preliminary tests of samples from six deposits of oxidized copper ores .in Nevada. The tests for the most part were confined to laboratory-scale acid leaching to extract the copper.'The exceptions consisted of flotation tests to demons' ate the possibilities of treating the ore by that method. The samples tested were representative of oxidized copper ores from six counties in all parts of Nevada. The results obtained by the preliminary tests described were indicative of the extractions of copper to be expected, In the five leaching experiments, the approximate consumption of acid was also indicated.]

Copper remains one of the most sought-after metals in the industry. Tennantite (Cu12As4S13) and tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) that occur in pyrite copper, copper-zinc and polymetallic ores are an additional reserve for increasing technological parameters of flotation. Pyrite mass (85% and more) has similar flotation properties to other sulfide minerals, and imperfection of reagent regime is a common problem that occurs during quality copper concentrate processing. Due to tennantite's and chalcopyrite's differences in flotation properties with butyl xanthate at pH > 10, tennantite often reports to the flotation tails. Hight alkalinity of the medium increases the oxidation level of sulfide minerals, thus increasing the concentration of S2O3 2-, SO3 2- SO4 2-. At processing facilities in the Russian Federation, the concentration of thiosulfate ions in pulp is in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 g/l and higher, which leads to a decrease in flotation activity of the tennantite. The effect of butyl xanthate (as standard), thionocarbamate, dithiophosphate and M-TF (a mixture of dithiophosphate and thionocarbamate) on monomineral (tennantite and pyrite) flotation in the presence of sodium thiosulfate was studied. The variable parameters of the "thiosulfate-collector" flotation complex were thiosulfate concentration (100-900); pH (8-12,5). The scientific methods included contact angle for hydration assessment; TEM for surface studies; UV spectroscopy and iodometric titration for solubility control. Comprehensive studies have established a connection between the concentration of thiosulfate ions and tennantite flotation selectivity. Flotation activity of tennantite is higher at pH 8 with a thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l. Pyrite remains active with butyl xanthate under the same conditions. TEM images of the surface films of the collectors on pyrite were acquired at pH 8. The MTF provides the biggest difference in adsorption, wettability and flotation activity between tennantite and pyrite at pH 8 and thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l, in comparison with butyl xanthate. The results of the research will be applied to improve selective reagent regimes of tennantite minerals flotation. Any city dweller who has walked alone along a remote mine passageway has to be impressed by the eerie silence - the total absence of noise except for ones own breathing and scuffing of boots on the bottom. An underground mine can have tremendous contrasts, from complete silence to the ear piercing clatter of percussion drills working on the mine roof. Noise in underground mining machines is both useful and detrimental. Without characteristic noises that are recognizable to miners, operators would have a more difficult job operating their machines. Noise serves as a warning of approaching machinery, and changes in noise give indication that breakdowns may occur. But excessive noise is a health hazard. In recognition of this fact, our Congress included noise exposure as a part of the "Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969". As Fig. 1 indicates, allowable noise exposure is established by specifying a time duration permitted at different noise levels. This is the well known "Walsh-Healey" criteria which governs noise exposure in many industries.
