"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) ventilation gallery was used to study methane-air flows around a continuous miner mockup with water sprays and a scrubber fan. Methane gas was released from pipes located at the face to simulate face gas emissions. Methane concentrations and air velocities were measured while varying parameters such as airflow quantity, entry width (sump or slab cut), and face ventilation configuration (blowing or exhausting curtain). Test data showed a similar pattern of methane concentrations at both low and high airflow quantities, but a difference in the distribution of methane concentrations between narrow and wide entry widths. Most tests showed that blowing face ventilation was more efficient in diluting methane than exhausting ventilation, similar to observations made in previous empty gallery studies. The patterns of airflow and methane concentrations observed in this testing can further improve the understanding of airflow in and around the CM and face, promoting effective use of face ventilation to improve the health and safety of miners. INTRODUCTION Attaining an accurate understanding of airflow distribution at the continuous miner face is instrumental in maintaining a safe mining environment. US mining regulations require that sufficient airflow must be directed to the deepest penetration of the face and render harmless contaminant gases, as verified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Currently, continuous miner face air readings can be taken in the last open crosscut and at the inby end of the curtain mouth. By measuring adequate airflow in a pre-determined area it is accepted that a sufficient quantity of that air exists to sweep the face of harmful dust and gasses. Unfortunately, due to the location inaccessibility, precise face velocity readings cannot be measured in situ. Face velocities may be estimated through computer-simulated programs based on laboratory models. Improving upon previous empty gallery testing and to more effectively determine representative face methane readings, a mockup of a continuous miner with water sprays and a scrubber fan was used in the current study to further refine face airflow conditions that would be closer to actual mining conditions."

Nano-scale Al-(Fe,Mo)-Si dispersoids form during solution treatment in grain interiors (intradendritic regions) of cast Al7Si0.5Cu0.3Mg alloyed with 0.3Mo (wt.%). Unlike the Q-Al5Cu2Mg8Si6 and ?-Al2Cu age-hardening precipitates which coarsen resulting in loss of strength in Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys, these Mo-containing dispersoids are thermally stable and retain their strengthening effect at elevated temperatures. Consequently, the age-hardened Al7Si0.5Cu0.3Mg0.3Mo (wt.%) exhibits high strength and creep resistance at 300 °C.

"A short account will be presented on the extraction of rare earths from monazite sand, bastnasite ore, and phosphate rock of igneous origin. This includes mineral beneficiation, leaching methods, fractional crystallization [of historical interest], ion exchange, solvent extraction, precipitation from solution, and reduction to metals. INTRODUCTIONOriginally, the term rare earths was only used for the oxides, R2O3, which are similar to one other in their chemical and physical properties and are therefore difficult to separate. Within the rare earth group, the elements scandium, yttrium, and lanthanum differ in their atomic structure from the elements cerium to lutetium (the lanthanides, Ln). Scandium occupies a special position with respect to this classification and its other properties, and therefore does not belong to either of these groups. The rare earth elements always occur in nature in association with each other. The isolation of groups of rare earth elements or of individual elements requires costly separation and fractionation processes owing to the great similarity of the chemical and physical properties of their compounds, which explains why the history of their discovery has extended over such a long period.The word “rare”, when used to describe this group of elements, originates from the fact it was thought that these elements could only be isolated from very rare minerals. Considering their abundance in the Earth’s crust, the term rare is now inappropriate. These elements are lithophilic and are therefore concentrated in oxidic compounds such as carbonates, silicates, titano-tantalo-niobates, and phosphates.The abundance of the rare earth elements taken together is quite considerable. Cerium, the most common rare earth, is more abundant than cobalt. Yttrium is more abundant than lead, whereas Lu and Tm are as abundant as Sb, Hg, Bi, and Ag. For all practical purposes promethium does not occur in nature. It forms only in nuclear reactors."

Harmonic energetic delamination of T2 building is being considered for demolition at a formerly known atomic lab. The T2 building is within a containment structure that is under a negative pressure of -49 Pa (-0.2 inches of WC) so that no remaining radioactive material is leaked out. The T2 containment enclosure is a portal frame-type system that spans east/west over 35.05 m (114’-11 7/8”) and spaced 2.9 m (9’-6”) apart. The west side of the portal frames is supported by a 64 cm (2’-1”)thick concrete wall which is backfilled to the west and open to the T2 basement to the east. The east side of the portal frames is supported by a 61 cm (2’-0”) thick concrete wall that is backfilled to the east and open to the tank farm vaults to the west. A concrete slab-type footing supports both the east and west walls. Transverse walls provide lateral support for the walls as part of the original design. The west wall has an elevated slab that provides further stiffening of the concrete wall between the transverse walls.

IN the course of an investigation of the V-CO system, two intermediate phases were found. One of these phases corresponds approximately to the stoichiometric composition VCo and is isomorphous with the sigma phase in the Fe-Cr system.' The second phase has the composition V3Co; its crystal structure is described in the present note. The alloys were prepared by mixing the two metals in the powder form, pressing a small disk weighing about 5 g at 80,000 psi, and arc melting this disk on a water-cooled copper plate in an atmosphere of pure helium. The details of this technique have been described.' The vanadium powder was obtained from Westinghouse Electric Corp., Bloomfield, N. J. This powder is probably of very high purity, since when it is properly sintered or melted in the above-mentioned arc furnace, ductile specimens are obtained. The cobalt powder, from Charles Hardy, Inc., New York, contained 0.5 pct Ni, 0.1 pct Cr, and traces of Si and Fe. After melting, the V,Co samples were sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and homogenized for ten days at 800°C. Powder diffraction patterns were obtained with a 14.32 cm diam camera, using Ka copper radiation. The patterns were readily indexed on the basis of a primitive cubic lattice with a parameter equal to 4.675A. The density, determined by the immersion method, was 6.71 g per cu cm; hence the number of molecules per unit cell is approximately 1.95; i.e., 2. At this point, the possibility that the structure might be that of beta tungstena became apparent. The beta tungsten structure is described as follows: Space group 03,, — Pm3n 2 Co in (a) : 000; ?4lhYZ (hhl) reflection present only if 1 = 2n. Assuming this structure to be the correct one, intensities were computed by means of the usual eauation: 1 + cos220 I oc p F sin 0 cos 6 where F is the structure factor, 0 the Bragg angle, and p the multiplicity factor. The observed and calculated values of sin 0 and the intensities are given in Table I. The agreement between the observed and the calculated sin 0 is good and there are no flagrant discrepancies between the calculated intensities and those estimated visually. The (hhl) reflections for which 1 is odd are not observed, as required by the space group. In addition, the (410), (430), and (531) reflections are missing as expected, because of the special (a) and (c) positions in0%. However, six reflections—(llo), (220), (310), (411), (422), and (510)—which have very weak computed intensities were not observed. For these reflections, the structure factor is proportional to the difference between the scattering factors of the two atoms in the structure. Since the scattering factors of vanadium and cobalt are not very different, these reflections are weak. However, by using Ka chromium radiation, whose wavelength is just above the absorption edge of vanadium, the effective scattering factor of vanadium may be decreased by one or two units; consequently the difference between the cobalt and vanadium scattering factors is increased. It was, indeed, found that in a powder pattern taken with chromium Ka radiation, the three reflections (110), (220), and (310) were actually present. The three other reflections (411), (422), and (510), with spacings smaller than half the wavelength of chromium Ka, were obviously not obtainable with chromium radiation. All the experimental results appear to confirm the beta tungsten structure for V,Co. In this structure, each cobalt atom is surrounded by twelve vanadium atoms at 2.61A; each vanadium atom is surrounded by two vanadium atoms at 2.34A, four cobalt atoms at 2.61 A, and eight vanadium atoms at 2.86A. The technological advances in efficient, rapid, and non-destructive hyperspectral core logging systems for systematic mineral mapping have led to the discovery and exploitation of new mineral deposits Hyperspectral imaging in the long-wave infrared range has been recently used successfully to identify various phosphatebearing minerals (monazite, xenotime, and britholite), with limited work on apatite associated with mafic-ultramafic layered intrusions. In this study we investigate the effectiveness of a hyperspectral imaging (HSI) system with long-wave infrared (LWIR) bandwidthsto identify apatite in the Upper Zone of the Bushveld Complex. The accuracy of the HSI results was validated by mineralogical and geochemical data. The two apatite-enriched zones detected by HSI suggesting widespread development of apatite throughout the uppermost 600 m of the Upper Zone. The lower apatite-enriched zone is approximately 40 m thick, while the upper apatite-enriched zone is about 23 m thick, consistent with previous thickness determinations by traditional logging and analytical methods. Spectral mixing observed in the response of apatite is ascribed either to the common association of apatite and olivine in these rocks, or to differences between the spatial resolution of the hyperspectral image and the size of apatite grains. The VNIR-SWIR wavelength region did not show prominent spectral features of apatite. Nonetheless, HSI in the LWIR range is effective in mapping apatite and should therefore be considered as an exploration tool. This research advances our knowledge of the reflectance spectroscopy of REE-bearing minerals, which makes it easier to detect, identify, and quantify REE-bearing silicate minerals by HSI.

The Guymard mine in Orange County, N. Y., is reported to have been discovered in 1862 and mined until 1876, producing 10,000 tons of lead and zinc ore. The property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in 1948. Development work was done by the Bureau in April and May 1949 and March 1950. During these two periods four drill holes totaling 2,090 feet were completed. The mineralized sections of the core were sampled and assayed.

CARL SCHOLZ, Chicago, Ill.-Mr. Young was kind enough to' allude to the development of a mine in which I am now engaged. Several months ago the Burlington Railroad decided to open a mine in the field Which they own in Franklin County containing some 15,000 acres .(6070 ha.) of coal, ranging in thickness from 8 to 12 ft. (2 to 3.6 m.). This proposition in itself is attractive to any mining engineer, but with the backing of a large company I saw an opportunity to do some novel work in the construction line, and for several months I have been investigating and working on the problem of developing what I hope will be the largest and best equipped mine in the State of Illinois. The shaft will be sunk at a place where the coal lies at a depth of 600 ft. (182 m.) and conditions both of the surface and of the coal are ideal in every way; the seam is almost level, and we had only 7 ft. (2 m.) of surface clay to go through. We are going to hoist by skips in order to reduce the rope speed. I believe that is a long step in the direction of economy, because we not only double the output of the mine by hoisting the contents of two cars atone time, but we reduce the proportion of dead weight. In our case there will be 20 tons of coal and 18,000 lb. of skip, or 55 per cent. net and 45 per cent. tare. That, of course, necessitates less than half the rope speed for the same tonnage, and we all know that speed means power and power means cost. Skip hoisting permits the use of solid-end gate cars, which is an advantage. The cost of these cars will be in the neighborhood of $250 apiece; They are well built, with roller-bearing wheels of the most up-to-date type, spring draw-bars, and refinements of-that character which are necessary to move the loads most advantageously.

A preliminary attempt has been made to study the particle size distribution (PSD) of minerals in one of the industrially important pulverized Indian coal sample using computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM). The results show that clay minerals, quartz, pyrite, and pyrrhotite form the bulk of the mineral matter. Minor minerals, such as calcite, dolomite, ankerite, barite, oxidized pyrrhotite, and gypsum are also observed in the coal sample. The PSD of the included minerals is generally observed to be finer than that of the excluded ones in the coal. Thus, the coal rich in included minerals has more small mineral particles, which may affect its reactivity. The proportion of included to excluded is found to be higher in major cases. Si is found to be mostly occurred as quartz and clay minerals, while Al mostly occurs as silicate minerals. Fe is primarily present as iron sulfides, iron oxide, and Fe-Al-silicate. S is partitioned into iron sulfides and gypsum. Most Ca occurs as carbonates and gypsum, with a minor fraction associated with clay minerals. Mg is found to be mainly present as dolomite and clay minerals, with a very minor fraction present as ankerite. The majority of alkali elements are associated with aluminosilicates. P is mostly associated with kaolinite and/or present as more complex compounds containing Al, Si, and other elements as apatite are found to be absent in the coal studied. Ti is mainly present as rutile and kaolinite. The geo-chemical association of the trace elements has also been discussed. Keywords: minerals, Assam coals, Indian coals, CCSEM study

"Most of the gold produced worldwide is still obtained by cyanidation, in spite of the difficulties encountered in the processing of some gold ores such as the dissolution of copper-bearing minerals in cyanide solutions. The leached copper forms complexes with cyanide and causes several operating problems, which have led to the development of copper removal/recovery processes, among them the industrially accepted SART process (sulfidization, acidification, recycling and thickening). Although the SART process is in use in gold production plants around the world, new challenges are appearing with the continuous varying of the mineralogy of ores (such as higher copper grades, changing the solution composition and complexity). The optimal SART operating conditions for a specific solution are not the same when the composition of the solution changes; consequently, the efficiency of this process can decrease.The present study is a thermodynamic approach, corroborated by laboratory experiments, to explain how the main variables of the process affect the efficiency of copper precipitation as cuprous sulfide (Cu2S). The variables considered were pH value, copper concentration, cyanide/copper molar ratio and sulfur/copper molar ratio, all of which werevaried within the limits encountered in typical cyanidation solutions presenting the problem of copper.It was found that the variable that most affects the efficiency of the process was the pH value, since poor or no control of it can cause cuprous sulfide redissolution. The S/Cu molar ratio is also important: raising this ratio increases copper removal, but high ratios will also cause sulfide and cyanide losses. The effect of changing the CN/Cu molar ratio was negligible between 4 and 8. For a solution containing 300 mg/L copper and 490 mg/L cyanide, copper removal as high as 98.8% can be obtained with the addition of 0.6 moles of sulfide per mole of copper at pH = 6.IntroductionThe main process for gold production is cyanidation, because it is the most economical and efficient process so far. Precious-metal leaching occurs when the ore is placed in contact with a dilute alkaline cyanide solution. The dissociation of cyanide salts provides free cyanide ions, which allow the formation of the aurocyanide complex Au(CN)2 -. This complex can be retrieved from the solution by adsorption on activated carbon or by zinc precipitation. Although the use of cyanide represents an issue to health and the environment, there are technologies for its management and treatment that can be easily applied. Furthermore, it is a low-cost process compared with other methods that are available or under development."

Injuries and fatalities resulting from roof falls are still a major concern in U.S. coal mines, and many researchers are focused on developing meaningful approaches to minimize this hazard. In the United States, coal mine roofs can vary widely in composition, geometry, and inherent heterogeneity, leading to a wide array of different roof fall failure types. Researchers frequently employ numerical modeling tools to reproduce this physical phenomenon and provide key guides to engineers regarding roof conditions and control as long as the input data and constitutive relations are appropriately selected. Simulating such complexity requires expertise and constitutive models that adequately simulate roof behaviors. However, the currently available constitutive models have shortcomings in capturing some of the roof fall failure types common in underground coal mines, such as guttering. A new constitutive model is developed to address the shortcomings of constitutive models commonly used for coal roof stability analysis. The constitutive model developed in this study combines the anisotropic-elasticity and nonlinear strain-softening responses. In addition, the developed constitutive model can simulate up to three different joint sets implicitly, allowing for use in both continuum and discontinuum settings, and can be used in both Lagrangian finite-volume and distinct element method codes of Itasca. First, the mathematical expressions of the model are provided. Afterward, the validation phase of the developed model that covers comparisons with analytical solutions and those of existing models (e.g., anisotropic elasticity, ubiquitous-joint, and bilinear strain-hardening/softening ubiquitous-joint plasticity) is presented. Finally, a hypothetical coal mine roadway facing high horizontal stress is simulated. The presented model successfully shows three distinct stages of a cutter roof in a shale roof: (1) initiation of shear cracks at the rib– roof intersection, (2) extension of cracks deeper into the roof (i.e., above the roof bolt length horizon), and (3) cantilevered roof. It is demonstrated that the presented constitutive model has the potential to help future researchers in simulating various roof responses.

Newmont Ghana Gold Limited's Ahafo Operation has matured from its project ramp up stage into steady state operations after three years of operation. Management focus has shifted from addressing construction and commissioning problems to optimization and improvement. This focus change has coincided with the introduction by Newmont of a Continuous Improvement (CI) program across the company which provided a project management methodology that can be used in the execution of smaller scale projects. This paper focuses on the application of CI principles at the Ahafo Plant through the discussion of several case studies that demonstrate how these principles are applied.

The Sukari project, which is owned by Centamin Egypt Ltd, is located in southern Egypt, 770 km south of Cairo but close to the Red Sea. The project is the first new gold development in Egypt and was commissioned in the middle of 2009. In 2007, Centamin purchased the CIL plant from the Kori Kollo mine in Bolivia. This plant was originally designed to treat 6.5 Mtpa of oxide ore. The Sukari deposit contains an oxide zone close to surface with a thick zone of mixed oxide and sulphides below this. The sulphides contain relatively coarse pyrite and arsenopyrite with fine <10 µm gold inclusions. Eventually, the sulphide ore will be mined from underground. Metplant Engineering Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Bateman Engineering Pty Ltd was contracted to design modifications and additions to the Kori Kollo plant to enable it to treat the Sukari ores. The plant was designed to treat the three ore types in stages. Throughput was set to 4 Mtpa, dueto Sukari ore being harder, at a head grade of 1.7 g/t to produce 200 000 oz of gold. The oxide circuit was based on the use of the Kori Kollo plant and the difference with mixed ore was that the oxide circuit would treat flotation tailings rather than ore. This circuit has a leach capacity of 26 000 m3 and residence time of 24 hrs The main feature of the upgraded mixed ore plant was the addition of a flotation circuit to produce a concentrate which would be reground and treated in a separate leach and elution circuit. Ore is crushed in a gyratory crusher and the comminution circuit uses a conventional SABC producing a product with a P80 of 150 microns. The throughput of 580 tph of oxide ore and 500tph of mixed ore was set to match the mills from Kori Kollo, with the addition of the pebble crusher to accommodate the more competent Sukari ore. The flotation circuit comprises a single rougher circuit to maximize recovery. The concentrate is thickened prior to regrinding which is carried out in a tower mill and two SMD mills operating in series. The final product, with a P80 of 12 microns, from the regrind circuit is leached in a CIL circuit with a total capacity of 2 550 m3. Gold is recovered through a conventional pressure Zadra circuit. Tailings from both circuits report to separate tailings thickeners and are pumped to a tailings storage facility. The circuit is designed to maximize the recovery of water. The project lies in one of the driest deserts in the world and a feature of the operation is the use of sea water from the Red Sea. This water is pumped 25 km from the coast.

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a promising process for obtai- ning energy from coal, which is either unmineable with current mining techno- logy or uneconomic to recover, using conventional methods, in the present energy market situation. There are several coal fields, which could become new coal reserves, if the UCG process were successfully applied. In the 1960&apos;s Japanese researchers made a number of basic studies and field tests into UCG, although not all of them produced favourable results. This paper reviews Japanese research on UCG. This includs basic studies into coal gasification using a small, tube reactor fed by air and oxygen, and also large scale model stu- dies(reactor size of 8.Om x 2.4m x 1.5 m). Field test results from Akabira colliery in Hokkaido and a feasibility study of power generation using UCG from a coal field in Hokkaido are also Presented.

This paper discusses the background, requirements, need and content of plans for management of drinking water self-supplied to mining-related operations, including construction camps, especially in remote areas of Western Australia. The paper discusses the importance of cooperation between regulators, the mine site operator and the consultant in preparing a plan fully compliant with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines to protect the quality and safety of drinking water supplied to mine sites. The paper outlines some of the issues that need to be addressed in preparing a drinking water quality management plan, such as hazard identification, risk assessment, the multiple-barrier approach and the concept of critical control points. The air flow problems in openpit mines are complex. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models can provide detailed information regarding air flow pattern, velocity distribution, temperature, and pollutant concentration in an enclosed domain of an openpit mine. A range of turbulent models can be selected with varying complexity and accuracy. Pollutant transport models, however, differ in their assumptions and structure as well as in the algorithms they use. As a result, predictions vary from model to model. This paper presents a study of pollutant transport in an actual openpit mine under a stable boundary layer. The objective was to test two turbulence models using similar geometry and the same input conditions and model constants. Measured data were used to compare the results of the two CFD models, namely, the kappa-epsilon (к-є) model and the Large Eddy Simulation model. Despite the complex synoptic situations, different meteorological input data and fast-changing conditions, the simulation results from both the models were in good agreement regarding the dispersion of pollutants.

An experimental procedure was developed for studying magnetic roasting on a accurately-controlled laboratory scale. The loss-in-weight method was used and the course of reduction could be followed under a reducing gas atmosphere containing as many as five different components. Some important variables of the operation were checked on a marginal Mesabi iron ore containing porous and dense varieties of hematite as well as pure goethite. The conditions simulated were those for the grate roasting of a coarsely-sized ore burden. Temperature was maintained at 600°C; gas composition at 4.25% CO, 4.25% H2, 17.0% CO2, 15.0% H20, and 59.5% N2,, and gas flow rate at about 1,5 lineal feet per minute. The ore charge was composed of quarter-inch cubes. Under these conditions, the ore porosity was found to be one of the governing variables of the operation. Results showed that an ore size limitation existed as a function of this ore porosity. For efficient magnetic conversion, the size limit was 3/8 inch for very porous ores and about 65 mesh for very dense ores. An anomaly was noted in the weight losses incurred during actual magnetic conversion. For goethitic ores, these were generally about 13 per cent higher than could be accounted for theoretically. The effect was attributed to possible non-stoichiometric structures forming during the reduction process.

Oxidation Kinetics of SPHC was analyzed by TGA, and the curve of oxidation weight gain with different temperature was acquired. It is found that, when the oxidation temperature is between 500 and 600 , all the curves are linear; when the oxidation temperature is above 700 , the curves are close to parabolic. At the temperature of 900 , the oxidation weight gain increases dramatically. The TGA results indicate that the activation energy of SPHC steel is 146.19 kJ/mol at the temperature of 500 900 , and an oxidation kinetic model was set up for variable temperature. Based on the temperature change during rolling process, numerical simulation of oxide scales evolution was carried out for SPHC steel, and the simulation result agreed well with measured ones. It can provide a basis for estimating the scale growth and controlling the temperature on site.

PRESIDENT SORENSON: The meeting will come to order, gentlemen. I note from the program here this morning that you were supposed to have an address by the president. I can assure you, gentlemen, that the president is not going to make an address, so you don&apos;t need to squirm in your chairs. I do want to say it&apos;s certainly a pleasure to be here. I am sorry that I wasn&apos;t here last year. Apparently my absence lent consent, and I think it would be a good warning to every member of the organization to be here for all the meetings for your own protection! It&apos;s always a pleasure to be here and meet again with some of our old friends and meet a lot of new ones. It always interests me at these meetings to meet with the rugged individuals that operate the coal industry. They have to be rugged; they couldn&apos;t be any other type of men and live in it. I also know that it takes a good rugged man to fight this game nowadays. I feel that the men who operate the coal industry are fighting a battle against socialism. You all know we are the first industry they have their eyes on. If they take over our industry, they will take over everything else.

This paper, describing the mining and reduction methods and costs at the Oceanic quicksilver mine, is one of a series of similar reports being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on various mines in the United states. The property, which is owned and operated by the Anglo American Mining Corporation, Ltd., is 5 miles east of Cambria, San Luis Obispo County, Calif. It lies in a region of steep hills and sharply incised canyons on the west slope of the Santa Lucia Range at an elevation of about 500 feet above sea level. The climate is ideal for living and operating conditions. A 40-mile paved highway connects the mine with San Luis Obispo, the nearest convenient railroad town.
