ABSTRACT The influence of using different extraction processes (caustic versus non-caustic) on thethixotropic strength of oil sands fine tailings is examined, as is the influence of adding a coagulant tocaustic fine tailings. The thixotropic strength of fine tailings at large void ratios manifests itself as a bonding or gel strength that has been widely noted both in the laboratory and in the field. This gel strength has a significant influence on preventing the initial consolidation or settlement of fine tailings. Differences between the fine tailings’ thixotropic strength development are explained based on their physical and chemical characteristics.

THE binary system lead-antimony has been the subject of comprehensive investigations in these laboratories by Dean' and his associates. The effect of a third constituent on this system, particularly on the lead-rich alloys in which dispersion hardening was found, has a commercial value as well as an academic interest. This paper covers the effect of the addition of copper, bismuth and tin, all of which are likely to be found in commercial lead-antimony alloys, and is divided into three parts, as follows: I. The System Lead-Antimony-Copper II. The System Lead-Antimony-Bismuth III. The Lead Corner of the System Lead-Antimony-Tin These three systems are of three different types, and hence may be considered as covering three general kinds of additions. Bismuth forms no compounds with either lead or antimony and forms solid solutions with both. Copper forms several compounds with antimony as well as solid solutions but with lead it forms a two liquid layer system and no appreciable solid solution. Tin is soluble in both lead and antimony in the solid state and also forms a compound with antimony. The effect of small amounts of bismuth on the lead-antimony alloys is small, having no appreciable effect on the solubility of antimony. The temperature of the solidus floor is lowered appreciably by the presence of bismuth, cutting down the range of heat treatment. Copper, on the other hand, due to compound formation, increases the apparent solubility of antimony. The excess antimony is tied up with the copper finally and so is not available for dispersion hardening. First, permit me to say with what very great pleasure we find ourselves assembled in this most ancient and honourable city of Quebec. It is a city which we deeply respect as the fountain-head of the culture of French-speaking fellow citizens, and the seat of government of a province which is steadily recording new achievements in Canadian mining. Such achievements prove what can be accomplished when enlightened and progressive government policy, technical and scientific competence, and private initiative pull forward together in harmonious rhythm. It is a most happy and auspicious event also that the guiding control of the affairs of the Institute and of the fine traditions of provincial administration have for the past year been united in the person of our honoured President, Dr. A. O. Dufresne. This year, again, we have bad prepared for us by our hosts a splendid programme of technical sessions and social entertainment. Each year we pay an unspoken compliment to the Institute, expecting as a matter of course nothing but the highest standards in both these spheres. In its annua1, semi-annual, and regional meetings, in the constant activity of its local Branches, the Institute continues with marked success to perform its great dual service, social and educational. We are all its beneficiaries to the extent to which we choose to profit by participation in its affairs. But, one imagines, to none are the advantages of Institute membership more valuable than to young men embarking on their professional careers.

In New England, an area of the country where 3 ½" holes are considered large diameter,we are starting to experiment with 5" and 6" holes. The results are excellent in some areas and poor in others. The geology of rock is the major consideration to account for the blasting results.

The availability of renewable energy does not meet the demands of consumption. Hence, fossil fuels will continue to be an important energy source, and coal promises to cover the requirements for the coming decades. Because of its high energy content, deep lying bituminous coal and anthracite are important for energy generation. One trend in the future of coal mining is thin seam mining, because thick seams more and more have been exploited. A well-known and approved longwall mining method for thin seams is plowing which has big advantages compared to a shearer because of its compact design. The extraction of those thinner coal seams will become more and more important in coal industry and therefore the plow will receive more attention in future. Most approaches in longwall automation are focused on the shearer and need a more or less intelligent exploitation machine. Therefore those approaches cannot be used for the plow technology. The authors introduce a shield-data-based horizon control (SDHC). The developed approach integrates the shield data provided by the roof support and process monitoring into the horizon control process to keep the plow in seam even if the seam trend changes. This control concept can be used for the shearer as well as for the plow. The basic idea of SDHC for plow application will be introduced in this paper and first simulation results will be shown.

The height of tailings pond (TP) embankments is frequently raised to accommodate the ever-increasing volume of tailings released by the mining industries. Excess pore water pressure (EPWP) may develop during the height-raising operations, which can affect the overall stability of TP. This article presents a detailed stability analysis for the embankments of an existing TP, the height of which was increased twice utilizing downstream (D/S) and upstream (U/S) construction techniques. A rigorous two-dimensional transient fully coupled-stress-pore pressure analysis is performed in the finite element-based package RS2 to examine the build-up of EPWP during different stages of construction. Furthermore, an attempt is made to investigate the feasibility of future height raising, with due consideration given to the influence of embankment raising rates. Results from the analysis show a development of higher EPWP within the tailings deposit in comparison to the embankments of TP, indicating the development of an undrained-like condition. The study further reveals that the development of EPWP is highly affected by the rate at which embankments of TP are being raised. A higher rate of embankment-raising results in the development of greater EPWP in comparison to a lower embankment-raising rate, which may lead to the ultimate collapse of TP. Furthermore, based on the stability analysis, the height of existing TP can be further raised by 4 m (two lifts of 2 m height) utilizing the U/S construction technique. A thorough cost and benefit analyses are however required before implementing the results of the current analysis since the storage capacity of TP is reduced while raising by the U/S method.

The mechanism of cobalt removal from zinc sulfate solution with zinc dust is still not understood well. The experiments in this paper were carried out by zinc dust from zinc sulfate solution with high cobalt to study the mechanism of cobalt removal. Residues after the cementation process from zinc sulfate solution were analyzed by SEM and Electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) to investigate the morphology of products. Different temperature will cause different structure of particles. With the increasement of temperature, cobalt removal can be improved considerably. The mechanism of cobalt removal by zinc dust is thought as follows: firstly, the cobalt ion forms Co-Zn alloy with zinc particles, and the reaction reaches equilibrium quickly; secondly, the Co-Zn alloy continues reacting to Co with Co2+, which is the control procedure of the whole reaction.

A guide to the development and use of an APL computer program for the analysis of load-flow problems is presented. The program is designed to provide an interactive method of load-flow study to improve underground coal mine electrical system design and safety. The theoretical basis for load-flow analysis is discussed, along with per-unit calculations which facilitate computation. Specific input/output, execution and network modification procedures are presented for using the APL program. In addition, typical results are given for examples taken from power system analysis literature.

Introduction When considering power in Alberta, there automatically come to mind ideas of either hydro or thermal generation, leaving in one's thought an uncertainty as to which one would propose. There is frequently an obvious source of power in some locations on our fastflowing rivers, the major possibilities being described in the report on Surface Water Supply and Water Power of Alberta issued by the Alberta Government in 1948, but it must be realised when reading that report that the sites so described will require extensive geological and other surveys before they can be exploited, and account must be taken also of the transmission distances involved in each instance. From a conservation point of view, where water power can be economically developed and power transmitted to the load centres, this should be done, and our thermal resources should be husbanded for our coming generations, especially if our water resources are falling owing to glacial shrinkage.

The mineral kaolinite is one of the commonest minerals in the uppermost 10 m of the continental crust; ranking in abundance alongside minerals like quartz, mica, feldspar and calcite. Only very exceptionally does it possess all the necessary properties needed to make it worth commercially exploiting. The terms 'Kaolin' and 'Kaolinite' are derived from a locality known as 'Kau-ling', in Jiangxi Province, Peoples Republic of China; where samples of a white clay used by the Chinese to make porcelain were first obtained by European missionaries and explorers in the eighteenth century.

The Waneta Expansion Project (WAX) is located near the existing Waneta Dam site at the confluence of the Pend d?Oreille and Columbia rivers, approximately 10 km (6.2 miles) south of Trail, BC, Canada. The WAX owners consist of a partnership between Fortis Inc., Columbia Basin Trust and the Columbia Power Corp. This design-build project was awarded to SNC-Lavalin in late 2010 and is expected to be operational in mid-2015. The WAX consists of a new 335-MW powerhouse, including two new Francis turbine units, each generating approximately 167 MW. The powerhouse is located downstream of the existing Waneta Dam, and will make use of excess water that would otherwise be spilled during the runoff season. Water will be funneled to the turbines through an intake structure and two 10.5- m (34.5-ft) diameter, concrete-lined Penstock Tunnels. A 10-km (6.2-mile) transmission line will connect the powerhouse to existing electrical grids. Redpath/FKCI Waneta Tunnelers (RFK) was subcontracted by the heavy civil contractor, the Aecon/SNC Lavalin (ASL) joint venture, to excavate the two penstock tunnels and install the cast-in-place concrete liner. RFK is a joint venture partnership between J.S. Redpath Ltd., an underground mine contractor located in North Bay, Ontario, and Frontier-Kemper Constructors ULC, a heavy civil tunneling contractor based in Nova Scotia, Canada. Since penstock tunnel excavation was planned using drill-and-blast methods with a significant grade of more than 17 percent, the combined experience of these two contractors was a perfect match.

Large surface mining projects in sparsely populated regions of the West have the potential to create disruptions in an area's social and economic character with potential effects on man that can far outweigh the physical and ecological effects on man's environment. The data and analyses involved in addressing the socioeconomic issues are additional to those traditionally associated with surface coal mining, such as those concerning land reclamation and water quality. Appropriate socioeconomic studies in conjunction with mine-planning can identify the potential problem areas in order that project measures can be taken to maximize the beneficial impacts and minimize the adverse effects of surface coal mining. The information required to conduct such socioeconomic analyses, available data sources, and the applicable analyses are described. Overall impacts of some proposed Western surface mines are summarized and potential mitigating steps discussed.

Hematite-magnetite ore bodies at Iron Mountain, Missouri, have produced nearly 9 million tons of iron ore concentrates since 1844. The ore minerals occur principally as open-space filling in fractured and brecciated andesite porphyry with very minor replacement of the wall rocks. The enclosing rocks are Precambrian in age and consist of a series of dacite, rhyolite, and andesite flows aggregating about 2000 feet in thickness. All of the ore is in andesite and the mineralization is Precambrian in age. The shape of the ore bodies, the breccia character of the ore, and the gangue mineralogy are believed to be unique. One of the two main ore bodies is crudely dome-shaped with a tendency for development of concentric mineralized shells; the other is an elongated lense in plan but hook-shaped in cross section. Both have strong linear elements striking northeast, east-west, or northwest. Various modes of origin for the structures and for the tension breccias have been suggested, but none is completely satisfactory. Hematite is the main ore mineral; magnetite is subordinate. Important gangue minerals are andradite, quartz, calcite, actinolite, apatite, epidote, and chlorite. Although some evidence favors injection of an iron-rich melt, other evidence suggests ore formation by a high temperature, water-rich solution.

Production of structural hot strip coils in yield strengths up to 700 MPa and higher is increasing worldwide. In addition to requiring higher strengths, structural designs require good formability, toughness and weldability. Toughness and formability come from optimization of ductility properties while weldability comes from lower carbon equivalent alloy designs. The key to the production of optimized cost effective hot strip produced structural coils is to create the correct balance of a proper alloy/processing design to create as fine and uniformly distributed cross sectional grain size as possible. In addition to the creation of the fine/uniformly distributed cross sectional grain size, the correct microstructure needs to be created. In the higher yield strength grades, not only does the grain size/distribution play a role but a proper understanding and control of microalloying precipitation kinetics is required. This paper will present various examples of hot strip alloy designs to produce cost effective hot strip structural coil in yield strengths up to 700 MPa with good ductility and weldability. In addition, steelmaking/casting parameters will be discussed to assure successful production. Optimized reheating, rolling and cooling parameters of these alloy designs will be introduced in an accompanying paper.

Discussion of the paper of Ralph Hayden, presented at the Butte meeting,. August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1443 to 1467. JOHN V. N. Done, Denver, Colo.:-Mr. Hayden has placed the metallurgical profession greatly in his debt .for this valuable paper. The importance of such a complete description of the research work on which is based the building of a plant to add at least 10,000,000 lb. of copper per year to the production of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at small expense, will be appreciated by all our members, and especially those who are facing similar problems. The information given in regard to the treatment methods discarded will be a great help to many workers, as it is often of as much importance to know what ? not to do" as what method to adopt. I Some further comment on the tests of the Dorr thickener may be of interest, as they have led to developments which I believe will prove of great importance. Before the Dorr thickener was installed, I had shown Mr. Laist reports from the Steptoe Valley concentrator, in which it was stated that one thickener 17 ft. in diameter was the equivalent in settling capacity of twelve 8-ft. cones, although the latter-contained double the surface area.. Mr. Laist, had made careful tests on the settling capacity of in 8-ft. cone on Anaconda slime, and we naturally expected the thickener would show a much higher capacity for equivalent area. When, is Mr. Hayden stated, the tests showed no increase, I realized that we were comparing it with a cone under test conditions, while the Steptoe results were based on operative conditions, find the explanation given by Mr. Waddell for the great difference had been, that " there is only one unit to watch instead of twelve, without the constant result of feed to twelve cones becoming unbalanced. Also the one 1 1/8-in. spigot used on the Dow requires no attention compared with the dozen 3/8-in. spigots of the cones.' I realized also as a. result of the tests that the total settling area required to handle the immense tonnage of the Anaconda company would be enormous, and very expensive in view of the housing required by Montana climatic conditions. After studying the matter over, I told Mr. Laist that I believed a thickener operating in a much shallower tank would have nearly the same capacity. AIR conditioning, or air cooling, for the improvement of ventilation in the Butte mines has come into increasing use during the past 10 years. In part, the methods practiced have been described in previous publications of the Institute, but some improvements on earlier methods have been made and a number of new features have been developed. This paper is presented as a record of progress made, and for the sake of completeness describes all general features of the work. The need for air conditioning in the ventilation of mines in the district arises from the fact that the temperature of the ground and mine water has shown a very great increase with increase in mining depth, and has now reached a maximum of slightly over 130°F. The most difficult part of the ventilation problem is the maintenance of temperature and humidity of a satisfactory standard in the working places, especially on the lower levels. Although ordinary ventilation is adequate to maintain good conditions in most of the working places it is subject to a number of limitations at great depth. Most important among these limitations is that with increase in depth the air becomes heated before it reaches the working places, both by compression from increase in atmospheric pressure and by heat transferred to it from rock at high temperature, so that its capacity for lowering temperatures is greatly reduced before it reaches the operating zone. Increasing depth of mining also increases the distance traveled by the air in its passage through the mine, and this causes a corresponding increase in resistance to air flow, so that there is greater difficulty in maintaining even the same volume in circulation. Thus, in the face of a demand that the ventilating system have a very much greater capacity to remove heat from the mine, the tendency is for that capacity to diminish. The only evident alternatives were (I) the opening of additional air shafts to increase the volume of air in circulation, (2) an extension of the existing system that would be subject to the same limitations, or (3) the adoption of an entirely different method such as air cooling. Fortunately for an economic solution of the problem, the mean annual temperature of the surface atmosphere at Butte is about 40°F., with very low relative humidity in summer, so that there is unlimited natural cooling power at a temperature range adaptable to air-conditioning methods. METHODS Two similar methods of air conditioning are used, as necessitated by service requirements and dependent upon the equipment available. In one, which is the more important and has the greater cooling capacity, water is circulated in a closed circuit, and, alternately, first absorbs heat from warm mine air and then dissipates it in the surface atmosphere by cooling at a cooling tower. "The PFK FeNi Smelter was re-commissioned by Solway Resources in 2002, ending a long period of economic decline in the adjacent town. In 2009 Hatch was retained to design, supply and install a custom furnace crucible that would accommodate a capacity increase from 34 MW to 40 MW and increase campaign life through binding and cooling technologies, as part of ongoing improvement efforts. The involvement of PFK personnel was critical to the successful integration of the new furnace technology with the existing process and operational practice. The furnace upgrade project was completed in 18 months during 2010 – 2011. Since start-up, the furnace has exceeded production expectations, operating successfully at 42 MW.INTRODUCTIONAfter ceasing operations in the 1990’s, the Pobuzhsky Ferronickel Combine (PFK), located in central Ukraine, was stripped of useful equipment and deteriorated while dormant. The surrounding town experienced a period of economic decline throughout the 1990’s. Solway Industries purchased the complex in 2002 and began a systematic incremental program to re-commission the smelter using both local expertise and specialists from other parts of the former Soviet Union. This led to the re-birth of PFK as a successful toll-smelting complex, and a renaissance for the surrounding economy.As part of the continuing improvement program, PFK approached Hatch in 2009 to study the possibility of a capacity expansion from 34 MW to 40 MW. It was decided, based on the results of the study, to design and install a custom furnace crucible integrating the unique PFK FeNi process with modern Hatch furnace technology. This novel approach had many benefits, including: maximum re-use of existing furnace components (off-gas, feed equipment and transformers), minimal impact on upstream and downstream equipment and building structure, and the retention of a familiar operating regime. The latter was a key factor in the success of the project, as it allowed the extensive operating expertise of the PFK staff to remain highly relevant to the upgraded furnace. This led to minimized capital investment, a rapid start-up and no significant operational challenges switching over to the new equipment incorporating Hatch furnace technology."
