"Vale has been actively evaluating new technologies to curtail diesel emissions. This paper discusses the selection, installation, operation, and evaluation of the MANN+HUMMEL SMF®-AR diesel particulate filter system to reduce diesel particulate matter emissions in underground mines. The system uses a sintered metal filter element, an iron fuel-borne catalyst with an onboard dosing system, an electric heater that uses onboard power, and a sensor-based control unit. More than 6,000 h of testing demonstrated that the system represents a breakthrough in the successful control of soot emission from light-duty vehicles with differing soot emission levels, exhaust temperatures, and duty cycles.RÉSUMÉ La compagnie Vale évalue activement de nouvelles technologies pour réduire les émissions de diesel. Le présent article discute du choix, de l’installation, du fonctionnement et de l’évaluation du système MANN+HUMMEL SMFMD-AR de filtrage des particules de diesel pour réduire les émissions de particules de diesel dans les mines souterraines. Le système utilise un élément filtrant en métal fritté, un catalyseur à base de fer dans le carburant avec un système de dosage intégré, un élément de chauffage électrique qui utilise l’alimentation incorporée et une unité de contrôle avec un capteur. The extraction of nickel has been carried out by the hollow fiber membrane technique using D2EHPA as the mobile carrier from the manganese nodule leach liquor after separation of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Co(II). The experiments were designed according to central composite design (CCD), which is a response surface methodology. The process parameters used for the experimental design were: pH, concentration of D2EHPA in the membrane phase, flow rate and H2SO4 concentration in the strip solution. Based on the analysis of variance, a reduced quadratic model was found to best fit the experimental data. The process parameters were optimized to maximize the nickel flux and the optimized conditions were flow rate: 630 mL/min; pH: 6.37; D2EHPA: 1.15 mol/L (1,150 mol/m3) and H2SO4: 2.39% (430.2 mol/m3), for a maximum nickel flux of 7.08 x 10-5 mol/m2.s, which was in good agreement with the actual Ni flux of 6.99 x 10-5 mol/m2.s.

The separation efficiency in a mineral processing plant is generally assessed and reported in terms of elemental assays constituting the minerals of interest. However, different minerals comprising of same elements behave differently under similar process conditions. Thus, it is imperative to track the mineral composition thank elemental composition of different streams in a processing plant. The availability of automated mineral analyzers such as QEMSCAN and TESCAN in recent times has made it possible. However, due to the high cost and expertise required, their adaptation in day to day monitoring of operations is not yet a common place. X-ray diffraction (XRD) profile fitting (Rietveld Refinement) is another technique which can provide estimates of mineral proportions in a sample. The results of Rietveld Refinement however are affected by coating of fines on coarse particles, method of sample preparation, particle size distribution of sample, elemental substitution in mineral crystal lattice. In the present work, we propose a simple and efficient method for quantitative estimation of minerals in iron ores using elemental assays and thermo-gravimetry analysis data. The minerals (hematite, goethite, gibbsite, kaolin and quartz) are identified using powder XRD analysis. It is also observed that goethite contains Al substitution in the crystal lattice. The samples were analyzed for %Fe, %Al2O3 and %Silica using chemical analysis. The measured Loss on Ignition (LOI) in the sample is contributed from goethite, gibbsite and kaolinite phases. LOI from gibbsite and goethite occur in temperature range 250–350°C and LOI from kaolinite occur in temperature range 400–700°C. According, LOI are determined in two different temperature ranges that are 100–400°C and 400–850°C. We have used the data to successfully determine the mineral compositions of iron ore samples. We have also employed a data reconciliation algorithm on the calculated data for further improvement and consistency of our results. Our method is very convenient for quick estimation of mineral proportions in a sample. The proposed method can also be used for quantitative phase estimation in bauxite ores and red muds.

Since human daily demands for fresh water have been increased significantly, the supply of fresh water for the mining industry, especially froth flotation, should be considerably reduced. In addition, stricter environmental standards have been implemented in many countries to reduce the risks due to the disposal of wastewater, many flotation operators have to seek more efficient ways to utilize the limited fresh water sources. Recycling water with high concentrations of impurities is a normal strategy for most of the mineral processing plants; however, water quality should be carefully considered to guarantee a smooth flotation process. Recently, the application of seawater in flotation has attracted much attention due to its availability and abundance rather than fresh water. However, the influencing mechanisms due to the application of seawater in flotation have not been fully understood especially the reactions between mineral particles and bubbles in the presence of high concentrations of cations and anions. This would impede the application of alternatives to fresh water in the flotation. Therefore, this paper reviews the current water sources and the technologies for water recycling in the flotation process. Specifically, the life cycle of water in flotation was proposed. In addition, the strategies including high pulp density flotation as well as the most promising alternatives to fresh water have been discussed in details, with the related mechanisms being demonstrated.

Assam cancer care foundation (ACCF) proposed the construction of hospitals and related facilities across 18 locations in the state of Assam-India. Tezpur is one among the 18 locations of Assam with high seismic risk. The strata at the site are comprised of mostly fine silty sands of lower SPT- N values. The water table is also encountered and ranging from 1 m to 2 m below EGL. Since the site lies in seismic zone V as per IS 1893, detailed liquefaction analysis is carried out for all five boreholes and indicates that soil is liquefiable and ground improvement is inevitable up to a depth of 15 m below existing ground level. To mitigate the liquefaction potential and enhance the seismic performance of the soil, ground improvement using stone columns by Wet top feed Vibro-replacement method is proposed. Also, the differential settlements can be avoided effectively under the raft foundation with Vibro Stone Columns. In this paper, field test validation results such as Pre and post-SPTs and ECPTs to access the extent of ground improvement, along with other information adopted in this project presented.

Cooling of coal mines in the Bowen Basin, characterised by steep geothermal gradient, is presently achieved mostly through rental surface bulk air cooling in summer months. This paper argues that future mines will be required to focus their cooling resources more intensively to manage a challenging thermal environment where virgin coal temperatures of over 50¦C at a depth of 500 m are expected. Currently, mine cooling systems are employed to maintain the wet bulb temperatures (WBT) to below 27¦C at which point the risks of heat stroke or other heat-related issues are manageable. The capacities of these systems are in the range of 6 MWR to 10 MWR. The relationship between high working temperature environments and injury frequency rates is well established. Therefore, provision of appropriate cooling strategies and understanding their optimum performance and suitability are important to Australian coal mines of the future. This paper evaluates the underground temperature profiles of deep, gassy coal mines with propensity for spontaneous combustion and proposes the long-term cooling pathways to effectively manage thermal hazards. Thermodynamic modelling is performed on a longwall face and includes air leakage effects from goaf streams at various locations along the longwall face. The strategy summarises the application of underground bulk air cooling, chilled water sprays on the shearer and the resulting temperature profiles. Considering the new mining projects planned for the Bowen Basin region, a review of implementable cooling strategies such as mid-gate mobile bulk air coolers (BACs), spot coolers, underground bulk air cooling and the use of chilled water to enhance the positional efficiency of cooling plants, are discussed in this paper. Grupo Acera, HYLSA originated in 1942 when Hojalata y Lamina began operations to supply steel strip for the Cuauhtémoc Brewery, the parent company. Production began in April, 1943 with growth accelerated because of World War II. By 1948 the company was producing its own steel from electric furnaces charged with scrap iron. Further expansion was hampered by the fluctuations in availability, price and quality of scrap iron. As a result, a search was made for a suitable process to enable HYLSA to satisfy its need for a reliable source of feed for its steel-making facilities. Their relatively low iron requirements at the time did not justify the very high capital investments required using the conventional blast furnace method. Processes which by-passed the blast furnaces were very much in their infancy and were not commercially tested. HYLSA then undertook an investigation of the direct reduction processes, knowing full well that much larger companies in other countries had investigated several processes but their work had not established a trend toward direct reduction or any particular process. However, after much effort and persistence HYLSA arrived at a process which suited their conditions. By using Mexican iron ore and natural gas they developed the now well-known H. y L. Process to produce sponge iron. Concurrent with the start of investigations which led to the H. y L. Process, HYLSA began an exploration program for a suitable source of iron ore. Thus in 1951, Cia. Detailed descriptions are given of materials, apparatus and the experimental procedure used to study the effect of bacteria on sandstone permeability. The factors affecting permeability during injection of bacterial suspensions which have been investigated are: (I) concentration of bacteria; (2) core permeability and median pore size; (3) species of bacteria, mode of aggregation and relative size; (4) injection rate or pressure differential; (5) mean pressure; and (6) depth of penetration of bacteria. The investigation demonstrated that bacteria cannot reduce core pertneability to zero and that their effect on permeability is subject to definite limitations. Remedial or permeability restoration studies also were made. Acidization in combination with reverse flow war found to be an effective method for restoring permeability In cores partially plugged with bacteria. The relationship between the bacterial quantities in the laboratory tests and those found in field operations is discussed. The linear laboratory flow data have been translated into terms of field radial systems; these data indicate the most practical methods of maintaining injection rates in the presence of bacteria are to increase injection pressures or hydraulically fracture the formation. INTRODUCTION It has long been known that various bacteria flourish in the above-ground components of oil field water-injection systems. The presence of these bacteria has led to the suspicion that they might enter into the causes for reduction of injection well permeability, but only recently has an attempt been made to describe the effects quantitatively.1 Biocides are used in many cases without a firm knowledge as to whether the bacteria are killed, or if they are, whether the dead cells affect formation permeability. This project was undertaken as part of a study to determine the effect of bacteria, residual oil and precipitated solids such as iron sulfide or calcium carbonate on the permeability of sandstones and to learn whether any of these materials adversely affect brine injectivity in secondary recovery or disposal operations. This report deals with that portion relating to the effect of bacteria. MATERIALS CORES Three different permeability ranges of Berea sandstone cores were used in the study. The range of initial, absolute brine permeabilities kj were: high — 278 to 400 md: medium—130 to 162 md; and low—17.7 to 48.3 md. The permeability data for the cores used in the tests are included in Table 1. All cores were cut to a nominal 1 in. diameter. Following air permeability determinations, they were molded with an epoxy resin in 1.5 in. ID aluminum sleeves. The sleeves had drilled and tapped holes for intermediate pressure connections along the length of the cores. After molding, the high- and medium-permeability cores were trimmed to 4 in. in length and the low-permeability cores to 2 in. These lengths resulted in pore volumes of approximately 10.9, 10.4 and 4.4 ml, respectively, for the high-, medium- and low-permeability cores. Pressure-transmitting channels were drilled through the plastic into the core proper, using the sleeve holes as drill guides. Width and depth of channel penetration into the core proper were approximately 0.03 in. and 0.05 in., respectively. Three pressure taps were used with all cores; for the high- and medium-permeability cores the taps were spaced 1 in. apart; for the low-permeability cores the taps were spaced 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2 in. from the inlet end. Pore size distributions were calculated from restored-state capillary pressure curves for representative cores in each of the three permeability ranges. In each case the pore size range with the greatest percentage of the pore space included the very small pores up to 0.5 micron in radius. The median pore radii were in the 5.5 to 6 micron range for the high-permeability cores; in the 4.5 to 5 micron range for the medium-permeability cores; and in the 3.5 to 4 micron range for the low-permeability cores.

The largest TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) tunnels are typically along modest slopes, but not always. Occasionally high slope angles are required beyond the capabilities of conventional open trough trailing conveyors. A 2019 project required a large TBM to ascend to an incline angle of 25°. A Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor could easily solve the high angle conveying problem but such a system must include all of the features of the conventional trailing conveyor, particularly the ability to extend with the TBM advance. The writer responded to the challenge and developed a TBM trailing Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor with all of the needed features. The invention (U.S.A. patents awarded October, 2021 and November, 2022) however goes beyond the 2019 project requirements and extends to any high angle incline. This writing first presents the broad Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor development, then its use in various construction and tunneling projects prior to this TBM Sandwich Belt trailing conveyor invention. Finally we present the new TBM Trailing Sandwich Belt high angle conveyor with all of its features and implications.

The main platinum-group metal (PGM) deposit in the Stillwater Complex is associated with a stratiform zone formed by magma mixing. In general, the intrusion is a large, layered body of Archean age which formed by repeated magmatic injections in- to a single, large, hypabyssal magma chamber. The Complex is broadly divided into the lower Ultramafic series of olivine ± orthopyroxene rocks (1000-2000 m thick) and the upper Banded series of predominantly plagioclase-rich rocks (24500 m thick). The latter is further divided into Lower, Middle, and Up- per Banded zones. The Ultramafic series, plus most of the Lower and Upper Banded zones formed from repeated injections of an olivine-saturated magma, the rocks accumulating from the floor upward with a crystallization order of olivine, or- thopyroxene, plagioclase, clinopyroxene. The olivine-bearing subzones of the Middle Banded zone formed predominantly from a magma which crystallized in the sequence plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene. Olivine-bearing subzone I, with which the PGM mineralization is associated, occurs generally -400 m above the Ultramafic series-Banded series contact. Ore grade mineralization is usually found in plagioclase or plagioclase-olivine cumulates. The platinum-group elements are associated with disseminated base-metal sulfides dominated by the assemblage, pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pentlandite. Olivine-bearing subzone I marks an interruption in the crystallization sequence of the Lower Banded zone, with the reappearance of cumulus olivine and an associated change of the crystallization sequence. These changes indicate the addition and mixing of a secondary magma of the same composition as that which later dominated in the formation of the Middle Banded zone. Characteristics associated with mixing include laterally discontinuous but well-developed layers, xenoliths of ultramafic rocks, and sedimentary-type structures such as slum- ping and graded layering. The influx of new magma caused sulfide saturation by one or more of several chemical changes including addition of sulfur, decrease in oxygen fugacity, decrease in FeO, or increase in SiO2. Once an immiscible sulfide liquid was formed, platinum-group elements were scavenged from the magma by the sulfide liquid and segregated.

After a review of the fundamentals of network planning, and specifically of the Critical Path Method, the author analyses several different types of projects, each with its own characteristics. Some can be handled in conjunction with a computer, but others can be dealt with equally well without one. Among the projects discussed are a blast furnace reline, the installation of a billet mill flying shear, and routine maintenance-type operations.

Green pellet strength including drop number and green compression is highly depended on particles size and shape. The used grinding method, ball mill or high pressure grinding roll (HPGR), directly vary the particle size and shape. Considering mode of pellet crack, green pellet is composed of particle-binder-moisture system. Different type of forces existed in such a system to create a stable green pellet: solid particle interaction, magnetic, binding and cohesive forces in the interface of particle-moisture. The pellet failure can occur at solid-liquid interface and/or through liquid phase. Pellet crack occurs when crack passed through entirely the plane failure. In this research, the effect of particle size and shape of pellet feed on green pellet strength has been investigated. It was deduced that green pellet strength highly improved by increase of specific surface area. The drop number and green compression strength of pellets prepared by HPGR was higher than ball mill. It was found that the main reason responsible for this difference was the particle shape. Capillary force is responsible for part of pellet force and improves by decrease of particle size. Also more elongated shape of HPGR particles resulted in higher capillary force due to thinner interface layer between particles. The less circular shape of particles lead to improvement of capillary force as can be occurred for HPGR particles. The rougher shape of HPGR particles resulted in higher wettability of particles and better diffusion of water among particles. In fact the rougher particles means lower connection angle. Aspect ratio of particles was of great importance of crack growth because the required energy of pellet failure increases directly. The required energy for pellet failure increases by increment of particle aspect ratio. The relationship among crack failure force, roughness and aspect ratio has been modeled considering 3 shape descriptors.

A DISCUSSION is presented of natural gas production and field processing equipment as now utilized in the gas producing areas of the United States, with reference to use of such equipment in Canadian gas areas. The scope of the paper is confined to a general description of various types and methods of using surface production equipment. The discussion is divided under two general groups: well-head production equipment, and field processing. The first will be concerned primarily with indirect heaters, separators, knockouts, and special versions of this equipment. The second major group includes the field processing equipment for handling natural gas. A delineation should be made here as to the meaning of field processing as used in this discussion. We will limit our term to mean such processing equipment as may be used in producing fields to process gas or its by products in a manner that does not require conventional plant practices either in operation or supervision. This covers such equipment as is necessary to complete preparation of gas for sale to pipeline and/ or is necessary to recover valuable components. Under this heading we will discuss glycol dehydration, solid desiccant dehydration, low-temperature separation, mechanical refrigeration, and desorbtion-stabilization. These are all processes involved in preparing gas for final sale or disposal. They do not include the more conventional and large-scale plant process systems.

A nutating grinding mill, exemplified by the commercial HICOM mill, achieves efficient particle size reduction through the accelerated motion of the material charge within the nutating chamber. This design, characterised by high particle velocities and rapid charge circulation, offers a compact solution compared to tumbling mills. There have been concerns regarding the mechanical reliability of kinetic joints for certain specialised mining applications. Recognising the need to model internal forces in such systems, this study focuses on the uncoupled simulation using multibody dynamics and the discrete element method. The investigation employed a small-scale experimental test mill, referred to as the NuMILL, featuring a cylindrical chamber (140 mm internal diameter, 245 mm height, 6° nutation angle). Instrumented with an array of sensors, the NuMILL provided internal load data for validating the simulations. Experiments were conducted with an empty chamber or filled with charge material. Charge materials included coarse sand or steel pellets with a charge-to-chamber mass ratio of 0.25. The mill speed ranged between 100 to 700 RPM. Multibody dynamics modelled resultant inertial and frictional loads within 5%, while the discrete element method simulated the internal material contact loads with accuracies ranging from 1% to 19%. The combined simulation approach predicted the resultant forces in the critical kinetic joint within a 20% margin. Representing the charge using rigid lumped mass elements was also studied. The presented simulation techniques, validated against experimental data, offer a robust foundation for analysing larger systems, including the industrial-scale HICOM.

Introduction The property of Siscoe Gold Mines, Limited, is located on an island of three hundred and forty acres in lake Kienawisik, about fifty-two miles east of Noranda and forty-three miles south of Amos, Quebec. Lake Kienawisik is a part of the Harricanaw drainage system and is crossed by the main line of the Canadian National railway at Amos. This waterway is navigable for boats with a draught of six to eight feet. Diesel engines have been the source of power at the property since milling operations were commenced in January, 1929. The power plant as first designed and built was for a milling capacity of 100 tons. Two Polar-Atlas units, each of 200 h. p., comprised the original installation. With the growth of the 'mine, more engines were added until, at the present time, there is installed at the Siscoe what is rated the largest Diesel plant at any mining property in Canada. Definition of a Diesel 'The Diesel engine is an internal combustion engine which works with liquid fuel introduced after, and independently of, the air charge at a time when communication between the cylinder and the outside atmosphere is cut off, and which ignites the fuel by compression-beat and stored combustion-heat unassisted by heat sources outside the cylinder itself while the engine is in stable operating condition"(1).

Introduction The apparent commonplace, and prosaic, nature of building-stones, lime, cement, gypsum, and clay products, and many other miscellaneous non-metallic minerals, such as abrasives, barite, diatomite, magnesite, mica, slate, salts, etc., and their everyday appearance and necessary in our lives, has removed much of the glamour, romance, and speculative attractiveness so frequently associated with our gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper mining ventures. However, it will be readily appreciated, with but a brief study of the thirty-five or more non-metallic minerals and products which are mined, prepared, or are known to occur, in British Columbia, that the 'industrial minerals' industry in the Province has an abundance of interesting technical problems, is fraught with speculative possibilities, and, as such, fully deserves much more technical attention than it has hitherro received. The brief notes presented in this paper show, in summary form, the magnitude of the British Columbia industrial and non-metallic mineral industry; outline in synoptically form the principal deposits of non-metallic minerals presently known; and indicate in a general way a few of the possibilities which exist in the Province for the expansion of the industry. For convenience in presentation, the assembled material has been divided into four sections: 1.-Sraristical information 2.-Strucrural non-metallic minerals 3.-Miscellaneous non-metallic minerals 4.-Non-Metallic mineral possibilities in British Columbia 1. -Statistical Information The writer does not propose to dwell at length on the statistical comparisons and deductions which may be drawn from the four tables which have been compiled for this section of the paper, nor is it considered essential, as the figures present a most emphatic story in themselves.

The 15m high Inco flash furnace uptake was designed as a reaction chamber with the objective of destroying the H2S contained in the furnace off-gas by combustion with oxygen at about 1300?C. Until recently, the oxygen required for this purpose was injected through afterburners located at the bottom of the uptake. An undesirable side effect of this practice was the formation of build up accretions on the inside walls of the uptake. This buildup had a negative impact on both the furnace on line time and the control of the flash smelting process. In late 200 I, the afterburners were relocated to the roof of the uptake. As a result, about 80% of the uptake accretion buildup disappeared with obvious beneficial effects for the operation of the furnace. This paper discusses key flash smelting aspects that affect the operation of the flash furnace uptake such as the dusting rate, the formation of H2S in the freeboard of the furnace, and the impact of using coke to supply some of the heat required by the process. The mechanism of buildup formation and its dependence on uptake afterburners location are also examined. Prof. Yazawa's sulfide smelting thermodynamic relationships proved instrumental in understanding the conditions that influence the formation and the elimination ofH2S and uptake buildup.

The first documented procedures for designing frozen earth structures are over 50 years old, implemented long before the introduction of the Finite Element Method (FEM). Since that time, the development of three-dimensional models has made the traditional and often over-conservative methods relatively obsolete. This paper discusses a new approach that is largely dependent on the analysis of internal stresses with the frozen structure and comparison to frozen soil laboratory tests. A specific design process is discussed related to initial field investigation, laboratory testing, structural and thermal analysis, and performance monitoring. The design results are compared to case histories in the field that verify the procedure. BACKGROUND One of the first documented methods to designing frozen earth retaining structures was by Sangar (1968). Methodical refinements were published by (Harris 1995) and published by the International Symposium on Ground Freezing in 2002 (Andersland et al. 1991). The structural design or thickness of the frozen mass was based on the unconfined compressive strength of the frozen soils. Two simple equations for determining the thickness of a frozen shaft are shown in Fig. 1 and the first two equations below.
