"The similar flotability of scheelite, fluorite, and calcite resulted in the difficult separation by flotation. This work revealed the effect of water glass on the flotation of scheelite by FTIR and the wettability change of the usual cleavage plane, and proved that water glass inevitably influenced the flotation of tungsten minerals to a large extend in traditional fatty acid flotation process. A new collector, benzohydroxamic acid complexes, was found to be selective for the separation of scheelite and calcium minerals with little water glass. Hence a novel flotation process was developed for the recovery of tungsten minerals in shizhuyuan mine in China. Normal temperature flotation of tungsten minerals was developed to instead of the classical “Petrov's process” for scheelite-calcite-fluorite type ores. Compared with the traditional process, the recovery was improved by 10% and the grade of scheelite concentrate was above 55%. The disappearance or decreasing of water glass contributed to improving the recovery of tungsten and fluorite and the circulation of water and reagents.INTRODUCTIONChina is rich in tungsten resources and the proved reserves accounted for 60% of the world's reserves (Cai Gaipin et al., 2009). However the wolframite has been dried up and the scheelite resource has become the main resource of the tungsten metal. Scheelite deposits were classified to scheelite-silicate type and scheelite-calcite-fluorite type based on the associated gangue minerals. Scheelite was easy to separate from the silicate minerals. Flotation separation of scheelite from calcium minerals creates difficulties because of the existence of the same cation in the minerals and similar physicochemical characteristics such as solubility, hardness, specific gravity, PZC (point of zero charge) etc.(Arnold & Warren, 1974; Yongxin & Changgen, 1983; Ozcan & Bulutcu, 1993a; Deng et al., 2015, 2016;). The conventional collectors used in the flotation of scheelite ores are generally fatty acids or fatty acid derivatives ( Yongxin & Changgen, 1983; Oliveira & Sampaio, 1988; Sivamohan, 1988; Shi et al., 2014; Bo et al., 2015). It is difficult to separate scheelite especially from calcite with these reagents because the adsorption mechanism of these collectors occurs through chemisorption of the oleate ion onto the mineral surface (Atademir et al., 1979; Changgen and Yongxin, 1983; Hiçyìlmaz et al., 1993; Hu et al., 2011). Therefore, it is almost impossible to separate them by fatty acid flotation without using any selective depressant. Although oleoyl sarcosine was used as a selective collector in the flotation of fluorite and siliceous scheelite ores (Ozcan & Bulutcu, 1993b; Ozcan et al., 1994), this selectivity is not adequate for a low-grade calcitic scheelite ore. Unfortunately, the reagents such as organic colloids (dextrine, starch), quebracho, sodium phosphates, sodium silicate solutions containing polyvalent cations (hydrosols), etc. (Yongxin and Changgen, 1983; Schubert et al., 1990; Shi et al., 2014; Bo et al., 2015) used for calcite depression also depress scheelite to a large extent."

The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk.

Underground mining in the Bowen Seam has shown that the majority of outbursts have co- incided with faults, igneous dykes and sills, stone roof rolls or some combination of these. The coal measures are deformed principally by N- S trending, easterly dipping thrusts presumed to he associated with the major, reverse Collins- ville Fault. The old Collinsville State Mine records suggest that thrusts and strike-slip faults have been common sites of outbursts. In contrast, normal faults have not been outburst- prone. Detailed geological mapping in Bowen No. 2 Colliery 53 east and west panels has been carried out in the hanging wall of a thrust zone of 6.1 m throw. The associated sheared coal has been defined and several fracture sets delin- eated. Sheared coal can be observed up to 170 m from this thrust zone, but this is dependent on the vitrinite content of the upper seam section worked. Fvidence indicates that outbursts have crnrroJ only in extremely sheared coal. Curious spherical- to cylindrical-shaped c,,.31 ohjects ("apples" and "rods") are related to the deformation in the vicinity of the thrust zone. "When two discontinuities form a tetrahedral wedge in a rock slope, a factor of safety for the wedge can be simply calculated (if motion is driven only by gravity and resisted only by friction) from plots of the normals to discontinuities on an overlay of a polar, equal-area spherical projection to which the great circles of a similar equatorial projection have been added.IntroductionThe stability of slopes in rock masses is often controlled by the discontinuities that exist in the masses. In particular, the geometry of the discontinuities constrains the ways in which the mass may fail. Displaying the orientation of the discontinuities on a spherical projection has been found to be a useful way of identifying possible failure modes. The most concise display shows the orientation of the normals (or poles) to the discontinuities that compose the fabric of the rock mass. Computer processing of large samples of discontinuity orientations is necessary if the sampling biases identified by Terzaghi (1965) are to be routinely corrected. Fortunately, displays of the poles to discontinuities (or pi diagrams) are relatively easily produced on the line printer of a computer or by a computer plotter (Cruden , 1978; Ramsden and Cruden, 1979). Unfortunately, further analysis of the stability of a rock mass has tended to use traces of typical discontinuities on a spherical projection rather than pi diagrams; examples may be seen in Hoek and Bray's book (1981)."

Through a contract, the Bureau of Mines has funded the development of an Automated Breathing Metabolic Simulator (ABMS). The ABMS simulates man in all of the breathing and metabolic parameters for monitoring support and resuscitation equipment. For the first time, complete breathing and metabolic simulation are incorporated in the same device. Breathing rate, breathing depth, breath velocity contour, oxygen uptake, and carbon dioxide release are all variable over wide ranges, simulating conditions from sleep to hard work with respiratory exchange ratios covering the range of hypoventilation to hyperventilation. In addition, all of these parameters are remotely controlled to facilitate the use of the device in hostile test environments. The exhaled breath is also at body temperature and completely saturated. The simulation in faith¬ful to the extent of having a variable functional residual capacity and an anatomical dead space equivalent to that of humans. The ABMS will be used as a stand-in for humans in test and validation of respiratory equipment, permitting more extensive and safer evaluation in hazardous environments where human testing would have to be limited. In addition, it will greatly reduce the cost of prolonged testing in cases where simulation chambers with human subjects require three shifts of crews, including standby physicians. Perhaps most importantly, it will provide a calculated and reproducible test and validation facility. The ABMS is under complete computer control. Through a typewriter terminal the test sequence can be input into the computer which will then automatically adjust the ABMS to simulate any desired sequence of metabolic activities for time durations up to 15 hours. The computer also monitors the test procedures and provides test results printout.

Electric vehicles powered by lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are being developed by mining vehicle manufacturers as a replacement for diesel-powered vehicles. Explosion-proof (XP) enclosures are frequently employed to enclose electrical ignition sources in gaseous underground mines to prevent the spread of an internal methane-air explosion to a nearby explosive atmosphere. Due to thermal runaway (TR), Li-ion batteries have the potential to cause pressurized explosions in an enclosed structure. Past research has shown the potential for well-confined Li-ion cell TR to drive pressures beyond the conventional pressure specification for XP enclosures. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) used an Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC) to induce thermal runaway of Lithium Titanate or Lithium Titanium Oxide (LTO) type 18650 cells enclosed within containers with various volumes and found an inverse power relationship between the TR pressure and available free space. The results were similar in magnitude to that of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, which were used in prior testing. Temperatures, gas amounts, and TR pressure-rise rates were also recorded. The data indicate that with enough free space, the pressures can be lowered below the conventional pressure specification for XP enclosures.

The field of quantitative mineralogy has evolved significantly through the development of image analysis techniques and information technology. Quantitative mineralogical characterization can now be routinely conducted for determining ore compositions and understanding the behaviour of minerals within mineral separation processes. The characterization of mine tailings is another important application of quantitative mineralogy. The estimation of acid and neutralization potential as well as the interpretation of kinetic leaching test results are often based on quantitative mineralogical knowledge (mineral abundance, texture, metal distribution amongst minerals, etc.). The objective of this paper is to determine and compare the accuracy of four mineralogical characterization techniques that are often used for environmental sample analysis: (1) X-ray diffraction, (2) normal analysis from chemistry analyses, (3) normal analysis from specific gravity measurements and (4) SEM-EDS image analysis. For this purpose, three artificial samples were assembled by mixing pure minerals in proportions often observed in mineral processing plant tailings. BILMAT, a statistical data reconciliation software, was applied to reconcile the chemical analyses with the results of other mineralogical analysis techniques and to estimate the acid and neutralization potential of actual mine tailings samples. The acid mine drainage was qualified from the acid potential and neutralization potential equilibrium as determined through quantitative mineralogical analysis. The statistically reconciled data made it possible to predict the metal deportment as a function of their bearing minerals and therefore, in the case of neutral contaminated drainage, to assess metal leaching potential.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) State Route (SR) 167/70th Avenue East Vicinity Bridge Replacement Design-Build project is located in Fife, Washington. This $40 million project consists of replacing the existing 70th Avenue Bridge over Interstate 5 (I-5) with a single-span bridge of about 220 feet long with approach embankments. The subsurface conditions along the new bridge alignment generally consists of alluvial deposits with high potential of liquefaction overlying glacially overridden deposits. In the early stages of the project, drilled shafts were considered as the deep foundation system; however, after an additional subsurface investigation is completed at the site, driven pipe piles were selected as the deep foundation system. Bridge abutments are supported by 24-inch diameter, 80-foot-long open-end driven steel pipe piles. The pile length was determined to bypass a relatively thick liquefiable zone and to tip the piles above what could be compressible soils. The use of advanced seismic analysis was instrumental in optimizing the pile length. The dynamic testing performed on numerous piles indicated what could be unique soil setup factors compared to those measured in local projects as well as those reported in national design manuals. Detailed discussions of the pile foundations design and construction is presented in this paper.

This research, sponsored at Stanford Research Institute by the Grand Junction Operations Office of the U.S, Atomic Energy Commission, was an outgrowth of the concern that presently-known ore reserves may be inadequate to meet the projected demands of nuclear power reactors. The original program at SRI was to design a comprehensive geological information system and use it to store and analyze the very great quantity of data needed to estimate uranium ore reserves. Study of the problem showed that it could be solved only by use of modern electronic data processing techniques, so such a comprehensive system was designed and tested. The system test was satisfactory, but input lead time and total expense were shown to be too great for the system to be practicable for the AEC under present circumstances. Thus, based on results of the earlier research, a specialized and simplified procedure for predicting approximate uranium ore reserves was devised. The prediction is based on general geology of specific area cells of the earth, in order to provide complete volume coverage; the strata in these ores are evaluated for uranium ore favorability on the basis of a few selected criteria in order to allow rapid data input. Since the bulk of U.S. reserves are in clastic host rocks only such strata are considered in this work. This paper describes the structure and some details of the resource system and how it was tested in rn area of the western United States.

"WELFARE…Welfare endeavor in connection with both the metal and the coal mines of Utah has shown gratifying progress during recent years and both the operators and their employees are deserving of much credit for the efforts put forth to better living, working, educational and receational conditions in most of the mining camps of the state.In the older metal mining camps of Utah, where the towns are incorporated and independent of the mining properties operating in the vicinity, less opportunity is pre¬sented for the companies to exercise efforts looking towards improved welfare conditions than is the case of camps located on company ground and under the full control of operators.Even in such camps, however, as illustrated in Bingham, the companies can do much to better welfare conditions. In this camp the Utah Copper Company has spent $800,000 since 1 920 in the erection of modern brick cottages, apartment houses and the Gemmell Memorial Club. The cottages and apartments have every convenience to be found in up-to-date city homes. The Gemmell Memorial Club, erected and equipped at a cost of $1 75,000, was provided by the company for the benefit of the Utah Copper Company employees living in the canyon and has been made the recreational center for the camp."

For nearly two decades water scientists have been debating the need to use appropriate models for the questions being asked and the data available. This paper puts forward a rationale for a hierarchical framework for water balance modelling as it applies to mine sites. The hierarchy is based on the complexity of models and their data requirements. Scientific models are the most complex and require the most data; next is engineering models, then systems models and the simplest representations are given by conceptual models. A position is put forward that systems models have a range of uses that the others do not provide. A systems model, called SiteMiser, is described and its calibration illustrated. The model is applied to seven coal mines from the Northern Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Currently, there is little relationship between total water use and coal production. This relationship is not any stronger when fresh (raw) water is compared to reused water. Leading practice water use levels are simulated for all sites. The simulation results demonstrate that there is considerable opportunity to reduce water consumption and, in particular, to import less fresh (raw) water to the sites.

During one, what had been a colonial agricultural economy began to industrialize; water power, then steam after 1794, were the energy sources; coal and iron were the essential ingredients. The second stage started after 1850; aided by rich and diverse mineral resources, the country began its transition from the Iron Age to the Age of Metals. Early civilizations had been built on stone, and fairly high levels were sustained on iron. But the spectacular advances in the past century in communication, in construction, in transportation by sea, rail, land and air, and in much that characterizes modern civilization have depended increasingly on the use of the complete metallic and nonmetallic resources of the earth's crust. Thus it was appropriate to define the Industrial Revolution as “the period during which man's relationship to natural resources became utterly changed”, 1 with minerals playing a major and indispensable role. But we are now becoming aware that the relationship of man to natural resources must change again. On every hand the dangers inherent in the contamination of land, sea and air by the wastes of civilization are becoming apparent. And from the growing realization that mineral wealth is finite must eventually come other far reaching changes in mineral use and distribution. For on the scale of centuries we cannot continue to exploit mineral resources even at present rates, let alone at expanded rates, without eventual depletion of the more abundant resources, and early exhaustion of the less abundant. This paper lists resources of sulfur in Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Arizons, an area comprising approximately 522,600 square miles, Sources of sulfur occuring within the region are sulfur are, pyrite and pyritic ores, and natural gases and petroleum. Data concerning these sources are presented on a statewide basis. Some of the known deposits of sulfur ore are surficial and of fumerole origin; other deposits have resulted from oxidation of pyrite or sulfide ores of copper, lead, and zinc. The deposits are small and the sulfur is distributed erratically in them. There is a small production from some of the deposits, and the material produced is used as soil conditioner.

This paper summarizes the geomechanics programs conducted in two hard rock underground mining operations in the Western United States, between 1966 and 1981. The two projects were directed towards understanding the behavior of the rock masses, at the scale of the caverns. To this end, the emphasis was put on large scale field measurements, complemented by limited laboratory testing. The results of these observations were used to build realistic finite element models of the underground chambers. In the marble mine, at Crestmore, California, the models were applied to the structural optimization of the room-and-pillar pattern. In the granite mining, at Climax, Nevada Test Site, the models explained some unusual stress changes observed during excavation. Based on the large number of geomechanical techniques employed, specific conclusions and recommendations are offered regarding the quality, applicability, and usefulness of the various methods. The two case histories clearly indicate chat numerical models are extremely useful for a detailed understanding of the structural behavior of mine openings. To be realistic, these models must be based first and foremost on large scale field observations. The lessons Learned on these two projects also are directly applicable to the design and analysis of nuclear waste repositories in hard rocks such as basalt, granite, and welded tuff.

THE reconnaissance of the Goldfield mining-district, described in this paper, was made in May and June, 1905, and, though this time was too short for a complete report, the work accomplished may serve as a basis for more thorough future research. Dr. Berkey has examined the rocks collected by myself, and I am using his classifications. As a result of further field-work, and Dr. Berkey's examination of the rocks, this paper is an elaboration and correction of my views expressed in the Gold-field Sun, May 12, 1905. The sketch-map, Fig. 1, illustrates the geology of the Goldfield mining-district. Goldfield is an eruptive complex, consisting of alaskite (binary granite), hornblende-andesite, hornblende-dacite, rhyolite, pyroxene-andesite, pyroxene-dacite (sometimes containing, a small quantity of olivine), quartz-felsite, olivine-pyroxene-ande¬site, and basalt. Considering this list to be arranged in the order of eruption, the age-sequence of the rocks conforms to Richthofen's law, formulated in 1868. From his observations in Europe and America, propylite, andesite, trachyte, rhyolite and basalt, occurring together, succeed one another. In a general way, the medium and more acidic rocks precede the most asic-a result supposed by some to have arisen from their relative position beneath the surface, and due to a rude stratification by gravity in the original cooling magma during the older history of the earth, or to the same differentiation occurring during a quiescent (molten ?) period preceding eruption, being aided by the ease with which acidic rocks, mixed with water vapors, become fusible. Coal, as one of the vital sources of energy in China, has raised widespread concerns regarding its safety issues amidst the country’s economic growth driven by coal. To address this concern, this study employed the Kuznets curve, multiple linear regression, and data envelopment analysis models to investigate the impact of Chinese coal economic development on coal mine deaths from 1992 to 2021. The findings revealed a clear correlation between the Chinese coal economy and coal mine deaths. Specifically, per capita coal output, the death rate per million coal tons, and the death rate per hundred thousand persons exhibited positive, negative, and negative correlations, respectively, with the growth of coal income over the past three decades. Moreover, when the coal workers and coal output factors remained unchanged, the income of coal demonstrated a negative correlation with future changes in coal mine deaths. Notably, with three decades of coal economy development, substantial improvements in coal mine safety have been observed in China. Consequently, this research provides valuable insights for formulating safety measures and policies in coal mines across different economic levels, as well as a useful framework for assessing safety development in the coal industry.

New Nedre Fiskumfoss is a construction project in North Trøndelag, Namsen River. The purpose of the contract is construction of a new hydropower plant, that will phase out the existing power plant in the same waterfall. The contract consists of a tunnel system with cross sections from 16 m2 to 150 m2, powerhouse and transformer in rock caverns, 6 shafts and major works with inlet and outlet below river level. Technical challenges consist of demanding design on rock extraction, cofferdams, solid constructions with challenging design and demanding rebar work, as well as restrictions and unpredictable water flow in a national salmon river.

An experimental study of the settling characteristics of a washery effluent originating as tailings from a froth flotation circuit was undertaken by using a systematic approach to select the most appropriate flocculant(s) under predetermined conditions. Selection and evaluation procedures which greatly reduce the effort required to select flocculants are described. The results show that, although different flocculants display superiority at different ranges of dosage. Separan MG 700 (Dow) is the most suitable on absolute economic grounds. Flocculant evaluation is based on a Cost Performance Index (CPI) which expresses the cost of flocculant (¢/ton) required to produce a unit settling rate (in./hr). From experiments carried out with a number of flocculant aid and flocculant combinations, it was concluded that the use of flocculant aids can be economically justified only if the settling rates required are higher than those obtainable at the optimum flocculant dosage. Otherwise, the value of the flocculant aid appears to be limited largely to the reduction of supernatant turbidity.
