India’s steel vision of 2030 requires a huge amount of quality iron ore. The utilization of low-grade iron ores such as banded iron ores will play an important role to achieve the same production. The absence of alumina impurities in the banded hematite jasper (BHJ) ore provides it an edge over other low-grade iron ores. The conventional beneficiation techniques such as magnetic separation and washing were found to be ineffective to produce suitable feed (Fe ~ 60%) for the blast furnace. It was found that microwave exposure provides significant enrichment to the low-grade iron ore and can be used as a pretreatment step in the beneficiation of similar low-grade iron ores. The above study reveals that hematite phase is susceptible to microwave exposure which enhances the separation of iron values from impurities. Under optimum conditions, an iron-enriched concentrate with 61% Fe, 85% Fe recovery at 50% yield can be achieved from BHJ feed ~ 38% Fe. The pretreatment process for BHJ beneficiation includes only microwave exposure without any chemical additive and may prove economical and industrially feasible.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted studies to determine if phosphate slag stockpiles at Tennessee Valley Authority's National Fertilizer Development Center were hazardous materials. The stockpiles were not hazardous materials as determined by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) extraction procedure (EP) toxicity test. Radium-226 concentration was 28.7 pCi/g in slag and 2.1 pCi/g in background material. Radium-226 was not leached from the slag. Fluoride concentration was 3.87 pct in slag, 0.18 pct in subsurface material under slag, and 0.08 pct in the background. Slag material permeability was 1.65 x 10-3 cm/s, and subsurface material permeability was 3.24 x 10-6 cm/s. Rain water, trapped in a depression on top of the east slag stockpile, became seepage water at the base of the stockpile. Concentrations of EPA toxic elements in seepage water were much less than concentrations from an EPA EP toxicity test on the slag. Twelve elements-Na, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Cr, Mn, Co, Cu, Cd, AI, and P-had higher concentrations in seepage water than in rain water on top of the slag stockpiles, or in creek water adjacent to stockpile bases, indicating that they were leached from slag stockpiles.

THE stage is set for the 1930 Annual Meeting. It will take place in the Engineering Societies Building. Feb. 17, 18, 19 and 20, and an unusual pro- gram of technical papers, symposia, lectures and addresses, interspersed with luncheons, dinners, excursions and worthwhile entertainment for the four days has been arranged. The curtain rises on Monday morning and the first act is by the entire company-registration. Then the meeting hits its stride, for there are ten technical sessions on Monday, and the range of subjects includes most of the Institute membership. The Committee on Coal and Coal Products, which is about to become the Coal Division, presents a symposium of a dozen or more papers on Coal Classification, concluding its afternoon session with several papers on general subjects. At its luncheon between sessions, C. E. Bockus, president of the National Coal Association, will be the honored guest. Papers of theoretical character will be discussed at the morning session of the Committee on Geophysical Prospecting; at its afternoon session there will be presented summaries of results obtained at various properties by methods described at previous meetings of this group and permanently recorded in "Geophysical Prospecting," published by the Institute early in 1929. Members of the Petroleum Division should not overlook the paper by Theodor Zuschlag, on this Committee's program. It is entitled, "Oil Structure Mapping by the Sundberg Method." Members of the Iron and Steel and Institute of Metals divisions will find it profitable to attend the session on Engineering Education on Monday afternoon. E. A. Holbrook has arranged a program of ten-minute talks on Metallurgical Education which are designed to get down to "brass tacks." and the practical man may, in discussion, contribute as well as learn. At 5 p. m. Thomas T. Read will lecture+ at Columbia University, on "Recent Progress in Economics of the Mineral Industries."

Methods of treatment of pyrite concentrates differ, depending on the content of pyrite and non-ferrous metals: oxidation roasting, sulphatization roasting, smelting, direct hydrometallurgical treatment and so on. Existing technologies do not provide for high recovery of metals, expenses associated with existing technologies are high, and environmental issues, associated with the existing technologies need serious attention. We have developed universal technology of the activating-dissociating autogenous roasting of pyrite concentrates using air based, or air, enriched with oxygen, blow. The basic process is taking place in accordance with the following reaction: (1-x)FeS2 + (1-2x)O2 = Fe1-xS + (1-2x)SO2 +Q The products of this reaction are pyrrhotinized cinder and roasting gases, rich in SO2 (up to 18 % in case of air blow) and poor in SO3, that contain up to 1 % of elemental sulphur. Cinder contains different forms of pyrrhotite. These forms of pyrrhotite differ by its content (from Fe0.843S to Fe0.945S), thermodynamic, magnetic (from 4.10-1 to 3.6 SI units), flotation properties (with pyrite dissociation the ?-potential of the product is moving towards more electrically positive charge, from 0.95 for pyrite to 0.2 for dissociation products) and other properties that depend on the conditions of roasting. The combination of pyrrhotizing roasting with different methods of cinder treatment allows to increase the level of sulphatization of non-ferrous metals during the roasting; reduce the amount of blow used during the processing; reduce dust losses to the gas phase; reduce the capacity of gas cleaning system and increase resistance to corrosion of the gas-treatment system, used for the production of sulfuric acid from pyrites. This combination of treatments also allows to use magnetic separation and flotation for separation of ferrous and non-ferrous metal compounds during cinder treatment; perform de-arsenation of arsenic containing concentrates and by-products. Pyrrhotinized cinder may be treated by oxidizing and non-oxidizing hydrometallurgical methods. In the present paper, a new energy balance equation was developed, considering the slag phase, in order to define the effects of jet penetration and determine a new value for the factor K. The factor K measure the resistance to momentum transference between exit nozzle and metallic bath. The experiments were performed based on the same conditions of the article used as a comparison. The results showed the same behavior between the experiments and it was possible to determine a new value for the factor K, which changed from the unit order for the metal phase system to hundredths order for the metal and slag phase systems. These results are considered unprecedented.

"INTRODUCTION Barite is one of the major industrial minerals whose production has increased considerably in the last 10 years. In 1935 domestic production of barite was 218,075 tons and. had increased by 1944 to 515,136 tons. 3/ Most of the primary uses for barite and barite products were developed before 1935, so the increase in barite production reflects the growth of industry in general rather than any recent developments in barite technology.The principal uses for ground and crushed barrite are as a weighting agent in heavy drilling fluids, as a filler in rubber and other materials, as a pigment and extender in paints, and as a flux in glass melt. In addition, a considerable' quantity of barite serves as the raw material for the manufacture of lithopone and barium chemicals.Specifications for barrite vary widely and depend primarily on the use to which the material is put. The primary requisites for barite used in heavy drilling muds -are that it have a minimum specific gravity of 4.2 and be very,low in soluble salts. A minimun barium sulfate content of 92 percent may be specified; but this is less important than the gravity. 4/ In addition before consumption the material must be ground to '92 percent minus 325-mesh. 5/ Lithopone and chemical manufacturers require a minimum of 94 Percent barium sulfate, a maximum of 1.0 percent iron oxide, and not more than a trace of fluorine. 6/ Barite used as fillers in light-colored products should be of fairly high grade, but the filler used in dark products may be considerably lower grade.Glass barite should contain a minimum of 96 percent barium sulfate, not more than 3 percent moisture, a maxium of 0.2 to 0.4 percent iron oxide, and not more than a trace of titanium oxide. Particle size is a matter of some importance in glass barite, also. 7/"

Discussion of the paper of S. E. Bretherton, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 1481 to 1487. S. E., BRETHERTON, San Francisco, Cal.:-Since preparing my paper, our chemist, F. L. Wilson, has been experimenting with Leadville, Colo., oxidized zinc ore and Leadville zinc sulphides containing lead, operating upon 40-1b. lots at a time. His results on Leadville sulphides are as follows: The raw ore contained a trace of gold, 5.04 oz. of silver, 19.1 per cent of zinc, and 7.24 per cent of lead. After roasting the ore contained a trace of gold, 5.72 oz. of silver, 0.75 per cent of copper, 21.7 per cent of zinc, and 8.29 per cent of lead. The loss in weight by leaching was 38.8 per cent. The extraction was 42.8 per cent of the copper, 80.6 per cent of the zinc, 7.1 per cent of the lead, 0.64 per cent of the silver, and no gold. The little .silver that is extracted would be thrown down with the copper when precipitating it from the zinc and both thrown hack into the residue to be smelted. There would be no trouble in smelting the residue with nearly all the sulphur eliminated and containing less than 7 per cent. of zinc. On zinc carbonates containing silicates the results are not satisfactory. H. O. HOFMAN, Boston, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :¬The paper by Mr. Bretherton upon the application of ammonia and carbonic acid to the recovery of zinc as oxide from roasted sulphide ore is of interest to me, as the first installation of the Schnabel process for the extraction of zinc from a mixture of zinc oxide, lead oxide (with some cupric oxide), and pellets of enriched lead, produced in steaming liquated zinc-silver-lead crust of the Parkes process, was made at Lautenthal, Harz mountains, where I was chemist. In that capacity I carried out numerous experiments on the Schnabel process, was active in the erecting of the plant, and later had charge of it. After the Lautenthal plant had been in operation for some time a similar one was built at Hoboken-les-Anvers, but both have been abandoned, as the wet process could not compete with the distillation of the liquated zinc-silver-lead crust, now used universally in the Parkes process.

"This study focuses on comparing the “blinding” effectiveness of various organic additives as part of a general review of using organic additives to mitigate preg-robbing and improve gold recovery during cyanide leaching of carbonaceous gold ores. The laboratory results compared the impact of various organic additives on the prevention of gold adsorption using both activated carbon and ore samples containing carbonaceous matter, generally referred to as total carbonaceous matter (TCM). Although several organic reagents were found to have a significant blinding effect on activated carbon, these results did not translate into increased gold leaching efficiencies with actual ore samples.INTRODUCTION Preg-robbing refractory ores, which contain carbonaceous matter, have been problematic in cyanide plants for many years. In industry, preg-robbing by carbonaceous matter may be mitigated using various techniques including flotation, to remove the carbonaceous matter; addition of blinding agents, to passivate the carbon surface and prevent adsorption of gold cyanide complex; roasting, to partially or fully destroy the carbonaceous matter; chemical oxidation (Abotsi & Osseo-Asare, 1986); pressure oxidation; or microbial deactivation (Dunne, Staunton, & Afewu, 2013). Carbon-in-Leach and Resin-in-Leach are also used as process alternatives in which activated carbon or resins are used to compete with the carbonaceous matter for gold cyanide adsorption. For highly preg-robbing ores, thiosulphate leaching may be considered as an alternative to conventional cyanide chemistry (Baláz, et al., 2000). Natural carbonaceous matter is composed mainly of hydrocarbons, organic acids, and graphitic/amorphous elemental carbon. Natural elemental carbon that behaves as activated carbon is considered to be the main reason for preg-robbing, although the true nature of this phenomenon is not fully understood (Tan, Feng, Lukey, & van Deventer, 2005). In general, the hydrocarbon fraction is assumed to have negligible interaction with gold, while organic acids, such as humic acids, may form complexes with gold, inhibiting its extraction in cyanide solutions. Organic reagents have been used for blinding carbonaceous matter in gold ores prior to cyanidation. Abotsi & Osseo-Asare (1987) tested various organic compounds, with two possible effects in mind. First, the organic compounds were expected to adsorb onto the surface of the solids as anionic/cationic species; the resulting electrostatic interactions between the Au(CN)2- anion and the negatively/positively charged surface would inhibit/enhance the gold uptake. Second, the organic reagents were expected to coat the surface of the carbonaceous component in the ore, limiting the available adsorption sites and reducing gold losses. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation requested U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) assistance in developing design data for moving lead-zinc-gold tailings from their current location without disrupting the existing chemically stable conditions. This report presents results of USBM work in determining (1) the minimum required time to air dry the tailings to approximately 20 pet moisture under various drying conditions both in the laboratory and in the field, (2) the degree of oxidation or reduction that occurs during drying, (3) the effect of lime or cement addition before drying, and (4) the likely equilibrium conditions of the dried tailings after deposition at the new location. The limited number of tests performed by the USBM in the available time frame established trends in oxidation levels but did not provide absolute statistical validity of data values. All data from drying and oxidation testing are included in appendices to this report.

Over the past two decades, declining ore body grades and increased operating and construction costs have provided an incentive for the development of progressively larger flotation machines. As a result, the 1.7-2.8 m3 (60-100 cu ft) flotation machine of the 1950's and 1960's is being rapidly replaced by large volume machines. The result has been improved flotation machine specific capacity (tph processed per sq ft of floor space); specific power (hp per tph processed); and process control simplicity. The recent development and satisfactory plant evaluation of the 28 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine allows economic and operating advantages in high tonnage mill applications. Some principles of mechanically induced air flotation and the development of the large 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine are reviewed here. Performance evaluation in beneficiating metalliferous ores-copper, zinc, and iron-is also given and recently completed plant results provided. Mining lower grade ore bodies results in the need to process increased tonnage in the concentrator. This greater tonnage requires more individual flotation machines, unless individual machine capacity, or cell volume, is increased. As the ore processing rate of the concentrator increases, the benefits of progressively larger individual cells in the flotation section become more significant. The accompanying figure illustrates the advantages of a larger flotation machine. In the figure, the number of machines in the rougher-scavenger section is related to the plant tonnage for three sizes of flotation machine: 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft), 14.2 m3 (500 cu ft), 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft). The 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine results in 95 fewer machines, compared to the 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft) machine at 45.4 kt/d (50,000 stpd) feed. The flotation cell reduction is, of course, doubled at a plant production rate of 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd). Using fewer flotation machines saves floor space. The 14.2 m3 (500 cu ft) and the 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) machines result in a floor area reduction, relative to the 8.5 (300 cu ft) machine requirements, of 134.7 and 418.1 m2 (1450 and 4500 sq ft), respectively, for the 45.4 kt/d (50,000 stpd) rate and 269.4 and 836.1 m2 (2900 and 9000 sq ft), respectively, for the 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd) rate. In addition, flotation practice has shown that the "specific power intensity"-power per unit cell volume-is less for increased cell size. This results in a power draw reduction, for the rougher-scavenger circuit, of between 552 and 686 kW (740 and 920 hp) for the 14.2 and 28.3 m3 (500 and 1000 cu ft) machines, respectively, when processing 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd). Fewer cells improve machine control and simplify maintenance needs while reducing floor space and power requirements. These are tangible incentives for the development of large flotation machines for high tonnage applications. Flotation Principles The accompanying figure shows how key hydrodynamic regions influence the performance of a mechanically induced air flotation machine. Air is induced into the fluid from the top of the cell, due to the mechanical action of a rotating impeller. The impeller circulates the liquid, or pulp, from the bottom of the cell. The result of these dual flow paths is the mixing of the two fluids and one solid phase in the highly agitated region where physical contact between the air bubbles, and the solid particles to be floated, is accomplished. A Votorantim Metais possui dois Smelters de Zn situados no estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil, um na cidade de Três Marias e outro na cidade de Juiz de Fora. A unidade de Juiz de Fora tem se caracterizado ao longo dos anos pela mudança de estratégia no que diz respeito a obtenção de matérias-primas, buscando oportunidades em materiais secundários ricos em Zn, em substituição ao concentrado de Zn, tornando-se ao longo do tempo cada vez mais uma unidade recicladora. O cemento é um material gerado na Hidrometalurgia do Zn, mais precisamente na etapa de purificação, e é composto basicamente por Zn, Cu, Cd, Co, Pb e Tl. A solução purificada, produzida após esta etapa é direcionada a eletrólise para produção de zinco eletrolítico. Atualmente em Juiz de Fora, todo cemento gerado é destinado a uma área específica da hidrometalurgia para seu tratamento e recuperação de Zn e Cd. Os demais metais são perdidos e dispostos na barragem de rejeitos. Na planta de Três Marias não existe área específica para tratamento desse material, e dessa forma, todo ele é estocado em depósito especial. O objetivo desse estudo é avaliar e propor uma rota alternativa de processo que permita uma maior recuperação de metais dos cementos de TM e JF, utilizando os ativos da planta de tratamento de cementos de JF levando dessa forma a redução da geração de resíduos enviados para as barragens de uma forma economicamente viável.

Drilling in West Texas during 1942 was substantially less than in the previous year. In all. 1267 Wells were drilled, as compared with 2325 wells in 1941. Of these 1267 wells, 1052 oil wells, 10 gas wells and 69 dry holes were drilled in proven fields and 36 oil wells, one gas well and 99 dry holes were wildcat operations. Of the 36 wildcat wells completed as oil producers, 16 led to new field discoveries, three found new productive horizons in old fields, and 17 extended the productive limits of established fields. Where semiwildcat drilling took place along established productive trends, there was often no sharp demarcation between wildcat wells that extend field limits and normal development to fulfil lease obligations, other than the arbitrary classification of a well as a wildcat if it was drilled at a distance of 2 miles from a producing oil well. The dry hole drilled on the edge of a field may have proved a more hazardous operation than a semiwildcat drilled several miles from production but favorably located on structure. The percentage of successful wildcatting ranges from 26.5 down to 14 per cent, dependent upon the degree of inclusion of the semiwildcat operations. Irrespective of which figure was used, the West Texas area maintained its better than average exploratory position. No doubt a number of factors may have influenced the extent of the 1942 development. Among those arising from the economic dislocation attendant on the war effort, the following are worthy of note. Owing to inductions into the armed forces and shipyard competition for mechanically trained men, experienced drilling personnel was sharply reduced, thereby increasing drilling costs and well-completion hazards. Replacement labor has not met the same standard of responsibility or workmanship to which the oil industry has grown accustomed. Increased military consumption of aviation gasoline and other crude products, coupled with decreased domestic consumption of lower-octane gasoline, has stimulated the market demand for the types of sweet crude most readily processed with available refinery equipment to meet war requirements, and has depressed the market demand for the sour West Texas crudes. As a majority of the purchasers of West Texas crude normally ship a substantial portion of sour crude to the refineries on the Atlantic seaboard, the loss and diversion of tanker service between Gulf Coast and north Atlantic ports have further curtailed the market demand for this type of crude oil. As some purchasers of crude oil were able to move by pipe line their West Texas trunk-line capacity to Midwestern refining centers, they were not impelled to curtail purchases of West Texas crude. The varying ability of the purchasers of crude oil to market West Texas crude was reflected back to various fields to which they were connected, causing an unequal distribution of production as among fields and operators. Spontaneous heating of coal is one of the major concerns in the coal mining industry. Hundreds of millions of tons of coal are lost each year because of spontaneous heating. If necessary arrangements are made, many fires due to spontaneous heating may be avoided. Therefore, protective measures have become essential to prevent coal from spontaneous combustion. A large amount of coal reserve can be saved by the assessment, suppression, and prediction of spontaneous heating of coal, which also helps in betterment and efficient coal production. The use of chemical retardants can act as inhibitors for the liability of coal toward spontaneous heating by increasing its ignition temperature, thereby, increasing its incubation period. The coal-chemical mixture can be used for whitewashing the exposed coal in galleries as it creates a layer between coal and oxygen in the atmosphere, delaying the oxidation process and ultimately inhibiting the spontaneous heating liability of coal. This work examines the effect of chemicals such as sodium chloride, calcium carbonate, potassium iodide, sodium nitrate, and potassium chloride on the spontaneous heating of a coal sample. Thereby, it suggests a better chemical for inhibiting the liability of coal toward spontaneous heating. The experimentation involves flammability temperature (FT), crossing point temperature (CPT), and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The ignition and oxidation temperatures were found from the above experimental methods for Lingaraj open-cast coal mine samples, with and without adding chemicals. The results are cross-checked and verified through DTA. Correlation analysis was carried out among the results obtained from CPT, DTA, and FT, and better chemical retardants that effectively inhibit coal’s tendency toward spontaneous heating were suggested.

This report presents the results of a cooperative study between BethEnergy Mines Inc., Ebensburg, PA, a central Pennsylvania coal mining company, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines to investigate longwall development entry roof instability. In-mine mapping of geologic and deformational features was conducted to reveal the major ground control problems encountered during gate road development. In addition, mining-induced pillar load monitoring was used to indicate development loading on variously dimensioned gate road pillars and to determine if pillar yielding occurred. Finally, visual observations of a variety of roof control methods were used to determine the most effective support elements for controlling cutter roof failure.

Many of the gold deposits in the Timmins• area show a close spatial association to ultramafic metavolcanics. Available analytical data suggest that ultramafic rocks contain significantly higher gold contents than other major rock types. In addition, recent analyses by Keays (1975) suggest that talc-carbonate alteration of ultramafic rocks releases significant quantities of gold. It is proposed that the ultramafic volcanics formed the principal source of gold for the deposits in Timmins, and that the gold was derived from the ultramafic flows when they were extensively carbonatized. Carbonatization of the ultramafic rocks and emplacement of the auriferous quartz-carbonate veins was probably coincident with the last major period of deformation in the gold camp. Delineation of hitherto unrecognized ultramafic volcanics could be an important guide to the discovery of further gold deposits.

"Conventional wisdom is that gold not assayable is not recoverable or does not exist. There has been no formal study on the possibility that gold assays using advanced spectroscopy such as mass spectrometry and neutron activation could grossly underestimate the gold recoverable by proprietary extraction techniques. Such gold is not considered here to be æinvisibleÆ to detection but rather æabnormalÆ or ædistortedÆ at atomic level. Large-scale extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores has not been demonstrated, hence this emerging field still lacks credibility and acceptance. For fear of harming their reputation, few academic researchers or companies are expected to venture into this field until it is well proven. This paper aims to create awareness amongst metallurgists of the potential of æabnormalÆ gold ores by reviewing unconventional observations, the pseudoscience mainly available in non-peer reviewed web sites, and hypotheses for the recovery of ænon-assayableÆ gold, including: the occurrence of high levels of nano-sized gold in clays detectable by high-precision analytical instruments, which represents æinvisibleÆ gold accounts of ambient transmutation of elements, mainly using thermal methods orbitally rearranged monoatomic elements (ORMEs), which are virtually undetectable by conventional means, and their conversion to normal metals the possibility of a æhigh spinÆ state of transition metals the formation of microclusters altering the chemical behaviour of gold and the possibility of clustering with other elements. It is suggested here that gold in ores displays a range of clustering, from ænormalÆ gold amenable to conventional extraction to the ORME state. The concepts of æintermolecular waterÆ in forming complex salts locking up precious metals, electro-dissolution in strong acids, and electrowinning at both the anode and cathode are discussed as a means of treating æabnormalÆ gold ores. It is also possible that the gas phase extraction of gold chlorides under controlled temperature and pressure conditions, as well as transferred-arc plasma fuming of gold through carbothermic reduction of sulfides, could be used as a basis for extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores.CITATION:van Deventer, J S J, 2013. Aqueous solutions of Na2Cr04 can be reduced with CO to produce hydrous Cr203 and NaHCO3/Na2CO3. CH3OH, HCOO and HCHO in the presence of CO2 also reduce Cr 6+ and yield similar products. It is shown that the rate of Cr6+ reduction can be represented by the expression -d[Cr6+]/dt=k[Cr6+)1/2[R] where [R] is the aqueous phase concentration of CH3OH, HCOO- or CO. With these three reductants, the activation energies for the reduction processes are comparable and are of the order of 100 kJ/mole. Rapid reduction rates are attained at temperatures in excess of 220°C and, with these three reductants, a green acid-insoluble readily filterable hydrous Cr203 is formed. With HCHO significant reduction of Cr6+ occurs at about 80-100°C and an acid-soluble violet modification of hydrous Cr2O3 is formed. The reduction process is reasonably selective: solutions of Na2CrO4 contaminated with Mo6+ and W6+ can be reduced to yield a Cr2O3 product with significantly reduced contaminant levels. These findings are utilized as a basis for a process for recovering chromium from secondary source materials.

This study level process design represents an economically viable method for extracting thorium dioxide and other rare earth elements from monazite ore. This paper incorporates results from the 2019 capstone project from the honors Design Internship in Green Engineering in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. In this activity, senior students in Chemical Engineering at the University of Tennessee (UT) focused on the development and study of a process for the recovery of thorium dioxide and P2O5 from monazite. While not mandated, the process offers rare earth oxides as attractive byproducts. The project focused on recovery of byproducts rather than the creation or addition to waste streams. Additionally, (1) the process economics relied heavily on recovery of rare earth byproducts, (2) thoriumhandling portions of the process could be effectively segregated from rare earth and phosphate handling portions of the process, and (3) thorium and uranium content of waste streams should be carefully managed and eliminated where possible.

This circular is a study by the Bureau of Mines of 346 accidents in underground iron-ore mines of the Lake Superior district from June 1949 to August 1954. These accidents caused 354 lost-time injuries, including 28 fatalities and 2 permanent-total disabilities. The accident reports were analyzed by the Bureau to show the causes of injuries and the time charges and unsafe practices or conditions that caused the accidents. Also shown are the times of occurrence, ages of the injured by job classification, and experience of the injured in mines and on the job being performed when hurt. Detailed information is presented on approximately 14 percent of the total number of Lake Superior district underground mine accidents that resulted in lost-time injuries during the period covered. These facts are presented to aid accident-prevention measures in underground mines and as a record for measuring future safety accomplishments.
