The GRATE-KILN System plant at Svappavaara, Sweden, was constructed for LKAB by Allis-Chalmers under a turnkey contract and commissioned in 1969. The plant was designed to produce iron ore pellets from magnetite concentrate at 6100 mtpd using imported fuel oil. It represented the state of the art for plants of its type at the time. Fuel rated capacity was attained within one week of start-up. Product quality, power usage, fuel consumption and machine wear were within warranty limits during sustained production thereafter. As operator skills improved and gas handling system reserve capability was utilized, the plant frequently produced acceptable product at up to 115% of design capacity. During the period 1969 to 1976, market demands increased for high-quality pellets while energy costs rose steadily. At the same time, important advances in the design of GRATE-KILN Systems were being made in other plants constructed by Allis-Chalmers.

Whereas the ultimate world supply of energy minerals-defined as fossil fuels and fissile materials - is controlled by geological factors, the actual supply at any particular time is controlled by economic feasibility, technological innovations and /or political decisions. This paper identifies and discusses the principal uncertainties surrounding the international availability of energy minerals from now until the end of the century. A brief comparison is also made between energy and non-energy minerals. Genuine shortage s of energy minerals are now of a very long-term nature, whereas artificial ones may occur at any time and have a serious effect on the world economy due to the dependence of most OECD countries on imports of energy mineral . This paper argues that events over the last decade, such as the demand for a New International Economic Order, the OPEC increase in crude oil prices and the growing international lobby on environmental issues especially relating to nuclear safety - will progressively lead to a major, long-lasting transformation of the energy scene world wide. This transformation will encompass demand, in terms of conservation and efficiency, the supply mix of the various energy minerals , the supply system and the structure of the different energy industries . It is already affecting the role of governments and reaching into the question of national sovereignty both of developed countries, such as the U.K., Norway and Australia, and the developing countries, thereby making energy minerals a key area of international relations.

An attempt has been made to carry out qualitative assessment of mine water discharges from the different mines of West Bokaro Coalfields of Hazaribag district of Jharkhand, India. A total of 33 mine water samples were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), major cations (Ca, Mg, Na, K), major anions (HCO3, SO4, Cl, NO3), and heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni, Co, As). The hydrochemical data has been evaluated in terms of major ion chemistry, solute acquisition processes and suitability of mine water for domestic, industrial and irrigation uses. The pH of the analyzed mine waters varies from 5.27?8.43 indicating acidic to alkaline nature of the water. The electrical conductivity (EC) values varied from 276 µScm-1 to 1598 µScm-1 for measured samples and spatial differences between the EC values reflects the wide variation in lithology, surface activities and hydrological regime prevailing in the region. The anion chemistry of the analyzed water samples shows the dominance of SO4 and HCO3 with a minor contribution from Cl, NO3 and F. The observed high values of sulphate in the mine water of the area may be attributed to the oxidative weathering of pyrites. On average chloride is contributing 5% of the total anionic balance (TZ-). Fluoride and nitrate have low concentrations and on average contributing <2% the total anions. The cation chemistry indicates that 79% of the samples are Ca>Mg>Na>K, while the 6% belong to Ca>Na>Mg>K and 1% of Ca>Mg>K>Na. Weathering of rock forming minerals and cation exchange processes normally control the levels of these cations. Concentrations of some heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr) are found to be well above the prescribed permissible levels recommended for the drinking water. The water quality assessment for drinking purposes indicates that most of the mine water having high TDS, total hardness (TH) and sulphate concentrations. This suggests that mine water of the study area is not suitable for direct use in drinking and domestic purposes and needs a proper treatment before its utilization. The assessment of water for irrigation uses show that the water is good to permissible quality and can be used for irrigation uses. However, high values of salinity, %Na, SAR, RSC and Mg-hazard at certain sites restrict its suitability for agriculture uses. ThE exact type of fluid flow which occurs in a solidifying ingot is important in determining subsequent grain structure. This has been shown in studies of natural Convection" and of forced stirring or other disturbances of the melt."16 We shall explicitly argue that a complement to the existing natural flow in an ingot should be more effective than other types of flow in promoting the columnar-to-equiaxed transition. The ultimate effects of fluid flow upon structure is one of the topics of solidification that we have investigated in the alloy system Pb-Sb, under conditions simulating casting. In Fig. 1, the essential features of a bidirectional growth apparatus are shown; horizontal freezing from water-cooled faces within a low-thermal-conductivity lavite boat is a reasonable simulation of an ingot section. Details such as the furnace and thermocouples are omitted in order to show the location of four permanent. magnets, each with a pole separation of 21 in. providing a central field of about 1000 Gauss. When coupled with a dc current imposed through appropriate connections made at the cooled faces, a flow of fluid is produced as shown schematically. This technique described by Pfann and ~orsi" is ideal for our purpose since the flow indicated is the same as that we observe to occur naturally in this system. Components of 99.999 pct purity were used for study and all due precautions were taken in alloy preparation to avoid contaminants. Sections of the specimens were taken to ensure results representative of the interior as well as the surface of specimens. All proportions of equiaxed and columnar regions were measured by tracing the etched grain structures onto graph paper and simply counting squares. Four alloys were examined at superheats of 40" * 5°C and 100" * 9°C. Preliminary tests had shown that no appreciable enhancement of structure was obtained with magnetic field alone, so that this condition is not reported; it should nevertheless be noted that other configurations of magnetic field will reduce convection and thus enhance columnar growth.&apos;8 For the tests reported the magnetic field was applied to a specimen by bringing the four preassembled magnets to a position 2 mm from an outer tube immediately after the ingot was poured. The dc current of 30 amps passed through the sample throughout the entire solidification cycle, resulting in a power dissipation of 9 w per sq cm of interface. This may be compared to the evolution of latent heat of approximately 18 w per sq cm. Table I contains the results of this experiment in terms of the total area ratio, equiaxed/columnar grains, as a function of the field interactions, solute concentrations, and superheats employed. The total structure of the ingot is seen to be most influenced when both the field and current are applied simultaneously; when current acts separately, little effect may be noted in spite of the heat supplied. In addition, the change in structure from the no field-no current case to the field-current condition is more pronounced at the higher superheat, and the higher the concentration of antimony. An example of the grain refinement, as well as the increased equiaxed zone, is shown in Fig. 2. It is now important to prove that there is indeed an increase in fluid flow due to the presence of the field-current interaction; this is done by temperature measurements in the liquid metal. The tribological load is the load on forging tools resulting from the relative motions between the plastically deformed workpiece and the die. In comparison to many other forming processes hot die forging has an especially disadvantageous tribological system. The advantages of the application of hard coatings, which are well known for cutting tools, are to a much lesser extent explored for casting, extrusion, molding and forging tools. Increasing the lifetime of these tools is an important task in surface engineering because of the complex loading conditions and often complicated tool geometry. The plasma-assisted chemical-vapor-deposition (PACVD) technique is well suited to depositing hard coatings onto large dies and molds. The aim of this study is to present and discus results obtained on a duplex PACVD hard coating in an industrial application like the hot forging of automotive parts. A new generation of vacuum-melted and remelted (VMR) hot-work tool steels has been developed; these can reach a hardness of 58 HRc, and have a fracture toughness at this hardness equivalent to that of standard hot-work tool steels at 45 HRc. This offers one of two advantages: the steels can be used at the higher hardness to provide resistance to wear or deformation, or, when used at a hardness of 47?49 HRc for hot forging, to provide temper resistance, nitriding behavior and adhesive wear resistance. The results presented here are from a preliminary investigation. The experimental results indicate that the introduction of a proper duplex PACVD hard coating will lead to an improved wear resistance and a longer lifetime for the hot-forging dies. Furthermore, by using a hard, low-friction coating excellent anti-sticking properties can be obtained. At this stage of the investigation it is also necessary to carry out pilot trials to determine the wear resistance and the tool life in practice.

Barrick has successfully developed the thiosulfate leaching process to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing ores. The process was developed through rigorous bench test programs and proved in pilot campaigns and demo plant operations. The process uses calcium thiosulfate as a leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recovery. Opencast mining method is one of the most productive mining methods available at present, which is generally associated with the removal and handling of a huge amount of overburden material. Hence it imposes a serious challenge of dump slope stability and that too, mainly in the case of internal dumps. The study is primarily focused on the stability of dragline dumps and the subsequent development of a rating system to classify the stability of dragline dump profiles. Initially, numerical simulation is executed through RS2 (Version 9.0) software, which is based on the finite element method. Thereafter, simulation results are used to perform the sensitivity analysis of various geometrical and strength parameters of the dump slope, and the two-factor interaction method is also incorporated into the analysis, this method included the dependency of closest parameters while calculating the sensitivity index, and thereafter, it is converted into the rating of each parameter. The strength parameter like the angle of friction and the geometrical parameter like slope angle of the bench between the coal-rib roof and dragline sitting level are assigned the highest rating value. Based on the overall rating of the dragline dump, the dump slopes are classified into various classes, viz., very safe, safe, vulnerable, unstable, and highly unstable. This classification proved to be handy in the quick estimation of the stability of the dragline dump and also gives an idea of designing optimum and safe dragline dump profiles. The developed classification chart has been validated by the previous research works and has found similar results.

Unplanned dilution directly adds cost to production from mining, milling, tailings disposal and administration. Additionally, unplanned dilution decreases the productivity, profitability and may affect the planned life of mine. Identifying and quantifying the potential for unplanned dilution allows optimisation of the mining plan and mining practices to minimise the adverse impact on productivity and the cost of production. The Dilution Rating System (DRS) has been developed to more accurately predict dilution thickness and the variable potential for dilution, from individual stopes to life of mine planning. The DRS utilises the methodology developed for the Mining Rock Mass Model (Seymour et al 2007, Jenkins et al 2009) to generate a three-dimensional dilution rating model, which is then calibrated against stoping performance. Dilution can be predicted more accurately and the parameters affecting dilution can be determined and minimised through improved mining techniques, for example blasting and ground support design. Potential high dilution areas can be identified in the planning stages of the mine and systems put in place to mitigate the risk of excessive dilution. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the DRS and then successfully predict dilution for both the hangingwall and footwall of stopes at the Gara Gold Mine. This has enabled the expected dilution to be more accurately predicted and mitigated where possible thus reducing unplanned dilution.

An insufficient integrity of cast in-situ bored piles can lead to a reduction of the load bearing capacity and may require cost intensive repairs. Reasons for an insufficient pile integrity are linked to the construction process, mainly to poor concrete quality leading to bleeding and segregation of the fresh concrete. Moreover, the entrapment of soil and an insufficient concrete cover can pose a problem. Knowledge about the time-dependent development of the fresh concrete pressure during the construction process of bored piles is needed for a better understanding of the underlying processes causing these defects. Therefore, pressure measurements were carried out on different construction sites with pressure cells being installed at different depths along the reinforcement cage. The measurements revealed the maximum pressure acting on the surrounding soil. The achievement is a better understanding of the effects of the concrete placement specifically and the construction process in general on the surrounding soil to reduce the risk of pile imperfections.

The results of a laboratory research program aimed at the development of a water jet assisted drag bit cutting system for coal mine applications are presented. Two types of drag bits, a conical and a plow bit, were tested in a hard sandstone rock with jet pressures of up to 20,000 psi. Jet locations investigated were in-front and behind the bit. For each jet mounting location, three jet impingement distances with respect to bit tip were tested. The closest jet impingement location to bit tip was found most effective, providing the greatest force reductions on the bit. Overall, significant bit force reductions up to 50 percent were obtained with jet assist. Also observed was a drastic reduction in airborne dust when jets were employed.

"INTRODUCTION The behavior of particles in a sound field has long been of scientific interest since Kundt (1) 5/ made his classic experiments on some of the interesting effects of standing waves in cylindrical tubes. With the development of the electronic tube and its application to continuous generation of sound, experimental investigation of the Kundt tube was renewed (2). The more intense vibrations set up by a continuously vibrating diaphragm or rod produce even more striking effects than those observed by Kundt. Instead of the striations at the antinode produced by the stroked rod, then, wafer like barriers are formed at the antinodes, sometimes extending over the entire cross-section of the tube. Furthermore, it was observed independently by Andrade (3), Brandt, Freund and Hiedemann (4); and by investigators in the Bureau of Mines laboratories (5) that aerosols, such as ammonium chloride or tobacco smoke, could be flocculated quickly if passed through an intense sound field, particularly when a standing wave field was set up by a resonant enclosure. Because of its possibilities as a new means for removing suspended particles from dust-laden gaseous furance or smoke, the phenomena attending the behavior of suspended particles in a und field have been studied intermittently by the Bureau of Mines over the past decade.The first experimental work was done with a magnetostriction vibrator and a Hartmann air-jet generator as sound sources. It soon became evident that neither type was entirely satisfactory. Low mechanical efficiency is an inherent characteristic of magnetostriction generators, and the air-jet generator is difficult to control and does not permit accurate measurement of the acoustic output. The search for a suitable sound source led to the development of an electromagnetic generator, which is by far the most suitable for study of the effects of intensive high-frequency sound fields in gases (6)."

"This paper was' prepared to emphasize the part that coal washing tables can play in the development of many of the reserves of coking coals in Western Canada_ It covers a brief history of the development of the coal washing table through the present third-generation unit, which suspends from overhead steel beams and is driven by a counter-rotating gear mechanism. The design and operation of this unique table are covered in detail.An analysis of actual operating data is included, with explicit statistical breakdowns of the table products. The data used were actually produced by operating coal companies, and also produced by the United States Bureau of Mines while gathering data for a research investigation. Table feed capacity is discussed, as well as performance criteria and the parameters of relative table performance. Several typical table flowsheets are described, emphasizing the specific reasons for their use. The paper covers the past and present value of the table to the United States coal industry, and makes mention of the newest addition to the family of suspended, multiple-deck, counter-rotating, gear-driven, coal washing tables, the CONCENCO ""88"" Deister table."

A CBMM aplicou aços microligados ao nióbio de alta resistência mecânica para a fabricação de containers de caminhões que transportam grãos na região do Triângulo Mineiro e Alto Paranaíba, com o objetivo de reduzir o peso desses equipamentos e possibilitar o aumento da carga útil transportada. O novo projeto reduziu em 10% o peso do container e também aumentou seu volume útil de 27 m3 para 29 m3. O investimento teve retorno com apenas 8 dias de operação com o novo projeto transportando arroz. Também foram obtidos ganhos no transporte de milho e soja com o retorno do investimento em 21 e 56 dias de trabalho respectivamente. O trabalho mostra os aços utilizados e as principais alterações nos projetos desses componentes.

Pilot Hole "X" was drilled to test the formations through which the ventilation shaft for the proposed U.S.B.M. demonstration oil shale mine would be drilled. The geologic formations encountered in this hole are discussed. Correlation of the geologic horizons encountered in this hole with those encountered in nearby drill holes was accomplished by the use of geophysical logs. Data on the geophysical interpretations are provided. The anticipated geotechnical characteristics of the geologic units encountered in Pilot Hole "X" are described.

This paper describes the location and general features of iron occurrences in Colorado. Most of the deposits were examined; many are in forested and mountainous areas at altitudes of 5,000 to 13,700 feet. Iron is known to occur in 30 counties of western Colorado. Transporting the ore to market is a handicapping economic factor involving long truck and railroad hauls; the nearest purchaser of smelting ores is the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp., at Pueblo, Colo. When the ore can be sold locally for special purposes and at higher prices than can be obtained at iron smelters, small-scale operations can supply that market.

Certainly, one of the core processes for the recovery of fine magnetic susceptible iron ore particles, mainly hematite iron ores, is the wet high intensity magnetic separation or WHIMS. This paper outlines a variety of recent developments and innovative process designs in the JONES® type WHIMS. It highlights the latest examples of flow sheets in terms of the diversity of combined rougher, scavenger, cleaner stages and adds to this the new more advanced JONES® type WHIMS equipment technologies like the HIGH FLOW ? HF, the QUATTRO ? Q and the SPLITT OPERATION ? SP. As a result of the increase of the capacity and magnetic intensity, the specific production cost could be decreased. The high worldwide acceptance for this continuous development testifies for the success and state of the art technology.

An investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the relationship between freespace and ignition probability for borehole shots. A series of experiments was concluded which covered six freespace conditions for a pemissible explosive in a 3/4-inch borehole and encompassed some 700 shots. The results were analyzed statistically. From the analysis of variance, it was concluded that the freespace means were different and that this conclusion is not impaired by possible differences in the explosives used. Within the limitation of this experiment, a definite relationship was found between the freespace and the ignition probability. Specifically, the incendivity increases with increased freespace up to a maximum; beyond this maximum there is some indication of decreasing incendivity. Further investigations are in progress to establish whether the effects of freespace on ignition probability reported here are applicable to the large test gallery, INTRODUCTION A borehole loaded with an explosive charge is a common feature of the routine gallery tests for determining the permissibility of coal-mine explosives, of Experimental Coal-Mine shots, and of the small steel cannon shots used in connection with certain research programs on the ignition of firedamp (6, 10).6/ The question of the interrelationship of freespace, weight of charge, and ignition probability of the methane-air atmosphere has been raised

Investigation of the costs of industrial accidents dates back to the 1920s. The Bureau of Mines was one of the pioneers in accident cost investigation with numerous studies published between 1928 and 1933. The bulk of these early investigations dealt only with costs which appeared as payouts on company books; that is, the direct cost of insurance premiums and the costs of medical expenses which resulted from industrial accidents. These early investigations, especially the Bureau&apos;s study of accident costs in Pennsylvania and Indiana coal mines provided the first real evidence that promotion of industrial safety pays back in dollars as well as in human life and wellbeing. In the 30s and 40s, investigations began to accumulate evidence that industrial accidents impacted more than just the direct operating expenses of a company (i.e., higher insurance premiums). The work of Heinrich pioneered these investigations, and produced strong evidence that the un¬insured costs of accidents far outweighed those costs covered by insurance. Heinrich developed and published a ratio of insured to uninsured costs of 1.4. Despite his cautionary statements about blanket application of this ratio it is used even today to estimate total costs of accidents. Simonds, in the late 40s and early 50s, extended the definitions of uninsured or indirect accident costs and developed what is now regarded as the principal method for estimating the total economic impact of industrial accidents. Simonds&apos; method served as the basis for development of the logic of the Accident Cost Indicator Model (ACIM). However, several departures from Simonds&apos; method were made to satisfy certain requirements imposed by the Bureau of Mines, and because information gathered during the course of our investigation justified a departure. SOAPS have been used as collectors for many years, but only in the last eight years have other long-chain paraffin salts been used. It may be anticipated that these newer collectors will be used mainly with nonsulphide minerals, for which the xanthates and similar compounds are of little value. On the other hand, the xanthates are both cheap and effective for sulphide ores and seem likely to retain their present eminence in this field. During 1938 and 1939 two of us (E. E. W. and I. W. W.) commenced a comprehensive investigation of the principles underlying the use of paraffin chain salts as flotation reagents. This research was sponsored jointly by the University of Melbourne and a group of Australian mining companies.[t] A broad, semi quantitative survey was then made of the field covered in the present paper. This was followed in 1940 by further work by one of us (K. L. S.). In 1941 the investigation was taken over by the Division of Industrial Chemistry of the Commonwealth Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia. Discovery of some principles upon which are based the flotation of minerals by paraffin chain salts was followed by their application in the development of processes for the recovery of certain strategic minerals from their ores. Promising results in the flotation of cassiterite from various ores will be described in a subsequent paper. THE PARAFFIN CHAIN SALTS The basic requirements for a "collector" in flotation are that it should form a film over the surface of the mineral to be floated, and that this film should be orientated so that hydrocarbon (nonpolar) groups form the effective surface. When modified in this way, the mineral surface possesses some degree of air avidity. All investigators would agree with Taggart, Taylor and Ince23 that such a film can be produced only if the collector compound contains an active (polar) group to attract it to the mineral surface as well as the nonpolar group. One section of this large class of polarnonpolar compounds is the paraffin chain salts: CH3(CH2) „X where X signifies a polar group that ionizes in aqueous solution. Though the compound can ionize, it may be a weak or a strong electrolyte, and the hydrocarbon chain may be in the cation or the anion (Table I). Many compounds of similar constitution are available, but the usual polar groups are: -CO2Na, -SO3Na, -SO4Na, - PO4Na2, or an aminonitrogen group, the
