Cost evaluations were made for five processes for producing 100,000 tons of electrorefined copper per year from a chalcopyrite concentrate. The processes were (1) conventional smelting with all furnace gases vented to the atmosphere; (2) conventional smelting with converter gases routed to an acid plant and reverberatory gases vented to the atmosphere; (3) conventional smelting with converter gases routed to an acid plant and reverberatory gases to a citrate system plant; (4) conventional smelting with all furnace gases routed to a citrate system plant; and (5) a modified smelting process in which the concentrate is roasted before being charged to the reverberatory furnace, with roaster and converter gases routed to an acid plant. The total fixed capital costs of the plants were estimated as (1) $56.7 million, (2) $77.4 million, (3) $87.2 million, (4) $73.9 million, and (5) $77.0 million, respectively. Total S02 removal from stack gases as sulfuric acid or sulfur for each process was (1) none, (2) 66 percent, (3) 99 percent, (4) 98 percent, and (5) 78 percent. Assuming no credit for byproduct sulfur or sulfuric acid, total operating costs per pound of electro-refined copper produced were estimated as (1) $0.081, (2) $0.103, (3) $0.119, (4) $0.111, and (5) $0.103, respectively.

Os materiais compósitos tornaram-se ao longo dos últimos anos, essenciais ao surgimento de novas tecnologias. Para tanto, é imprescindível que alguns cuidados sejam considerados ao desenvolver estes materiais, como o uso do processo de fabricação adequado e a aderência fibra/matriz, sendo este último um fator preponderante na resistência mecânica final do produto. Também se torna cada vez mais necessário o desenvolvimento de materiais com capacidade de utilização ecologicamente correta. Diante disso, foi fabricado um compósito parcialmente ecológico, utilizando como reforço um tecido de sisal, e como matriz resina poliéster. Ainda, buscando a melhoria da aderência fibra/matriz foi efetuado um tratamento com Hidróxido de sódio (NaOH) a uma concentração de 3% no reforço de sisal. Para a caracterização mecânica do compósito, foram realizados ensaios de tração uniaxial nas fibras tratadas e não tratadas, bem como nas lâminas que utilizaram estas fibras como reforço, mediante a norma ASTM 3039. Quanto a esta propriedade mecânica, foi observado que o tratamento químico superficial diminui expressivamente a resistência à tração da fibra e, em contrapartida, aumentou a resistência do compósito polimérico quando comparado ao que utilizou fibra não tratada, confirmando assim o efeito positivo do tratamento na superfície do reforço de fibra natural.

The Bureau of Mines was created in 1910 largely to determine methods of preventing coal-mine explosions; the Bureau's studies have proved that coal dust, except possibly that of some grates of anthracite, can initiate an explosion in the absence of gas and that its ability to extend or propagate an explosion of either gas or dust has been responsible for nearly all of the widespread explosions that have taken place in bituminous and other nonanthracite mines in the United States in the present century. It is believed by many persons that all atmospheric dusts may be harmful if breathed in large enough quantities for long enough time; bituminous coal dust is generally considered to be essentially harmless physiologically, yet there is abundant evidence of definite damage from inhalation of bituminous dust mixed or unmixed with the dust of other materials. Attention un¬questionably should be given to allaying dust in bituminous mines, especially at principal dust-producing sources. This publication enumerates some of the sources of dust and describes practical methods of employing water as one of the most effective of the known methods to allay dust in bituminous mines.

The paper describes a practical methodology based on numerical modelling for the prediction of progressive failure of underground mine stopes with cable bolt support. A case study of the 40-761 stope at Kidd Creek Mine, Timmins, Ontario is presented. The stope was mined by blasthole open stoping in 1986 as a lead stope within a mining block between 36-1 and 38-2 levels. Initially designed to peak at 38-2 level, the stope back caved upwards approximately 40m towards 36-1 level. Cable bolts were installed above the stope from 36-1 level after caving had begun. The stope eventually stopped to cave when the falling rock mass encountered a sufficiently high cable density. The paper provides details of the geomechanical data and modelling results of the case study. Numerical modelling is carried out using a finite element package known as e-z tools which has, among other things, a special cable/rockbolt simulation capability.

Isso faz com que estes sistemas modernos sejam pouco utilizados na engenharia e restringe sua aplicação. Este artigo tem por objetivo estabelecer os procedimentos envolvidos na caracterização de processos de moagem e fomentar a utilização de técnicas modernas de escalonamento de moinhos de bolas nas empresas.

"In times of increasing energy costs automotive lightweight construction is gaining in importance. This paper deals with the production of hybrid steel-aluminum compounds by forging. The compound forging process is a promising method to successfully manufacture functional parts by applying resource-saving process steps. Nevertheless, challenges resulting from different material properties must be solved.The heating of hybrid material work pieces made of steel and aluminum is a great challenge. Steel is forged at a temperature of at least TSt =900 °C, while aluminum should not exceed a temperature of TA1= 500 °C. For achieving the required temperature gradient extensive experimental investigations have been carried out. Intermetallic phases form during the manufacturing process and can influence the bonding and the global part quality. In addition, methods for the characterization of the joining zone between the materials steel and aluminum are analyzed and the factors influencing the formation of intermetallic phases are determined experimentally.IntroductionIn times of increasing energy costs and stricter conditions relating to environmental protection, automotive lightweight construction is gaining in importance. The production of hybrid compounds by forging is a promising method to manufacture functional parts by applying resource-saving process steps. In compound forging a hybrid raw part consisting of a solid core, which is enclosed by a hollow casing, is joint in the forming process. This results in a graded material structure in the part in which the mechanical properties can be specifically adapted to the requirements. Compound forging is the form joining and/or firmly bonded joining of at least two different materials while plastic shape forming occurs (Figure 1)."

The converting of high-grade nickel matte for production of low-sulphur matte or nickel metal is a process which has eluded metallurgists in the past because of the limitations of conventional converting furnaces. The high temperatures required and the refractory nature of nickel oxide has prevented practical success in a process which has been known to be theoretically feasible for a long time. The Ausmelt top submerged lancing system is capable of operating under close control of the smelting conditions. High temperatures and both rapid oxidation and rapid reduction can be achieved. These features have provided the basis for successful pilot plant trials of the desulphurisation of high-grade matte from the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. Sulphur level in product was lowered from 20 to 25% to as low as 0.2%, with iron levels in matte in the range of 1.0 to 3.5%. The theoretical background of matte desulphurisation is surveyed and the pilot plant operations described. The implications of the results in relation to commercial plants and possible refinery operations are summarised.

A gradual decrease in injection rates commonly occurs as a water-flooding project becomes older. This decrease can be attributed to changes in reservoir conditions, such as swelling of clay minerals, fillup, or gradual plugging of the sand face. However, a rapid decrease in the rate of injection indicates abnormal behavior and is cause for alarm. Extreme plugging conditions can completely stop injections into a formation. Such behavior in wells was the main concern of the tests described in this report. An accepted method of alleviating this condition is by backflowing input wells - closing the supply lines to the wells and allowing the reservoir pressure to force water back into the wellbore and to the surface. If backflowing is not successful, a string of smaller diameter pipe sometimes is run inside the casing, and the sand face is flushed with a waterspray. More drastic treatment is to inject acid into the wellbore to dissolve extraneous matter, or even part of the reservoir material, in an attempt to restore the permeability of the sand immediately around the wellbore. Any of these procedures can he coordinated with bailing and swabbing of the well for cleanout purposes.

A multiple use storage facility building is being developed in the Philippines on a peninsula that was reclaimed in the 1990s without any soil treatment. The subsoil now consists of loose to medium dense silty sand underlain by a soft to medium stiff clay. A liquefaction assessment by analytical methods have shown that the loose to medium dense silty sand yields a high potential for liquefaction and lateral spreading during pthe design level seismic event. To mitigate the risk of liquefaction and lateral spreading, as well as assure the slope stability of the shoreline, a solution utilizing a combination of ground improvement techniques by means of a Mixed-In-Place (MIPTM) Lattice Grid Wall and Stone Columns was developed and successfully executed. For the detailed seismic design, a Finite Element 3D analysis was undertaken to simulate static and dynamic actions on the buttress wall. The liquefaction assessment and settlement calculation were carried out based on analytical design approaches. For the execution of the Lattice Grid Wall, the Mixed-In-Place (MIPTM) method developed by BAUER Spezialtiefbau GmbH was applied. The stone columns were installed using the Wet Top Feed method.

THe internal friction of metals has been studied frequently at elevated temperatures.1-4 In most cases it rises rapidly with increasing temperature. The notable exceptions are ferromagnetic materials, and lead.2 This paper describes an investigation of the general features of the high-temperature internal friction of 70-30 alpha brass. Experimental Method The internal friction of a metal is a measure of the rate at which it dissipates energy of vibration. The measure adopted here, I/Q, is (I/2p) times the specific damping capacity, a measure commonly used by engineers. In the measurements of this investigation, the stress level was kept so low that the observations were independent of the stress, The general method of making such measurements, and of observing temperature of a specimen during a measurement, has been described.5.6 The driver and detector coils were wound with wire insulated with glass thread, in order to withstand the high temperatures used. In previous work electrical eddy currents in the specimen served as the coupling between the mechanical vibration of the specimen and the electrical circuits of the driver and detector. The high values of the internal friction in the present investigation rendered this coupling insufficient. In order to increase this coupling, pole pieces cut from ordinary telephone diaphragms were attached to the specimen. A mixture of French chalk and water glass proved a satisfactory cement. All measurements were made at the fundamental frequency for transverse vibration, which lay between 600 and goo cycles per second. Specimens The measurements described herein were made upon a single cylindrical rod of brass, kindly furnished by Dr. Cyril Stanley Smith, of the American Brass Co. This rod was the specimen E of the set of alpha-brass rods described in an earlier paper.6 Successively larger grain sizes were obtained by annealing at .successively higher temperatures. A slice was cut off one end after each set of measurements. Grain counts were made on each slice by W. E. Lindlief, of the American Brass Co. Nine fields were viewed on each piece, located as shown in Fig. I. Results are given in Table I. The grain size is defined in the usual way; namely, Grain size = I/n1/2 where n is the mean number of grains per square millimeter. The dressing-works of the St. Joseph Lead Company were destroyed by fire, February 26th, 1883. Within about four months, or on July 5th, 1883, the new mill, with a capacity of 500 tons per day, was built and in active operation. The capacity of the new mill has since been increased to 800 tons per day. The old mill was built in 1867, by Mr. C. B. Parsons, the present superintendent. It was a curious rambling old structure, which had grown with the demands of the business; a few jigs having been added in one place, a table or two in another and wings and sheds added to the main buildings, from time to time, as it was found necessary to increase the efficiency or the capacity of the mill. The old mill was, moreover, a most interesting place to the student, a perfect "museum of ore-dressing." Nearly every form of dressing apparatus known to the art had, at one time or another, found a place under its roof, jigs of many kinds, concave, convex, side-bump and stationary tables, tyes, buddles, dolly-tubs, etc., etc. The method of dressing followed in the main the lines of English practice, but with many modifications, both in the machinery and the methods of working, due to the inventive genius of Mr. Parsons. Production of crude petroleum in the Middle East (southwestern Asia) and in South America has increased greatly during recent years and has become a significant factor in the world's production of crude oil. Crude oil from fields in the Middle East increased from 256,164,000 barrels in 1946 to 305,833,000 barrels in 1947 and 417,201,000 barrels in 1948. Production from South American fields increased from 446,417,000 barrels in 1946 to 518,652,000 barrels in 1947 and 574,837,000 barrels in 1948. Crude-oil production from Canadian fields increased from 7,726,876 barrels in 1947 to 12,370,875 barrels in 1948, most of the increase being attributable to two fields, Leduc and Redwater, both represented by analyses in this report. Present indications are that production of crude petroleum from all these regions will continue to increase.

IN my studies during the past twenty years of the enrollments in the mining and metallurgical schools of the United States and Canada, I have been struck with the great diversity in the curricula offered by these schools. In 1933 when I made my first complete study of the schools (Mining and Metallurgy, May 1934, p. 211), I discovered 19 different curricula or programs of study, leading to almost as many different bachelor degrees, in the 49 schools in the United States and the 4 schools in Canada.
