The 78th Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (hereafter referred to as RMCMI) convened at the Marriott's Mark Conference Center, Lionshead Village in Vail, Colorado. The meeting was called to order at 8:45 a.m. by the President, Ira E. McKeever, Jr., who is President, Western Mining Operations, Natural Resources Group, W. R. Grace & Co. McKeever was introduced by Past President Edward F. Ziolkowski, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Energy Development Company in Hanna, Wyoming. MR. ZIOLKOWSKI: The first order of business this morning is to introduce the president and for a business meeting as well as other items on the program. It is my pleasure to introduce Ira McKeever to you this morning. Ira was born and raised in Kit Carson, Colorado, and served in the U.S. Navy prior to obtaining his geological engineering degree in 1952 from Colorado School of Mines in Golden. He then spent the next 20 years involved in mining sulphur, pot ash and coal with Texas Gulf Sulphur at that time and Gulf Resources Chemical Corporation. In 1972 he joined W. R. Grace & Co. as president of the Mining Division, Natural Resources Group. He was named Colowyo Coal Company's president and general manager in 1976 to develop what is currently Colorado's largest coal surface mining operation. Last year he became W. R. Grace's president of Western Mining Operations which is the position he presently holds. Ira is active in civic affairs; he is currently serving on the Colorado Energy Impact Assistance Advisory Committee. He is a member of the Colorado's Metropolitan Water Roundtable, he is also a director of Project Colorado, a member of the committee for the Colorado Division of Commerce and Industry. He has, in the past, served as chair- man of the Craig Hospital Board. In 1967 Ira was the recipient of the Colorado School of Mines van Diest Gold Medal Award, and in 1981 was given the individual service award for outstanding accomplishments in the field of health, promotion, physical fitness by Colorado's Governor's Council for the Health and Promotion of Physical Fitness. Memberships are also held in Denver Coal Club, the Colorado Mining Association, and the American Mining Congress. Will you please welcome Ira McKeever? I do have one other piece of business here. If you will all join with me, yesterday was Ira's birthday. I asked what year that was, but I couldn't get that out. So, I'm not going to lead the singing. Someone is going to lead the singing. But I think it would be appropriate if we did sing happy birthday this morning and I think it would also wake us up. How's that? All right, will you join me please? So I've got a few more years hopefully to be with you and this wonderful industry that we represent. Thank you Ed. I realize now more than ever, the tremendous effort that you put in the program last year and the magnitude of the job that is placed in the presidency of the Institute. It was indeed with tremulous hands that I undertook to lead the Institute this year, and I found a tremendous amount of strength and guidance in my friend Ed whom we've known since college days and worked together. On behalf of that lifetime of memories and good thoughts, Ed, I would like to present to you a little token of appreciation. 1 would like to join Ed in welcoming you all to Vail. Ed arranged the weather, 1 arranged the program along with Charlie Margolf. This is the 70th regular meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute; and in accepting the leadership a year ago, 1 obligated one very special person to fill the role of chairlady and hostess for this meeting. I would like to have you all, if you haven't already, meet my wife, Linda. I would like to thank her publicly for her guidance and help she continues to provide me. It's absolutely necessary that you also meet and recognize Charlie Margolf our program chairman who will be helping through the meeting to present and monitor our program; and anyone who knows Charlie knows the sincerity and dedication he brings to anything or any phase of life he touches. Este estudo tem por objetivo caracterizar o pó de balão proveniente de uma siderúrgica do estado do Pará visando a sua incorporação em argilas para produção de blocos. O resíduo passou pela etapa de beneficiamento e, depois, foi realizada a difração de raios-X (DRX) e fluorescência de raios-X (FRX). Além disso, realizou-se também a análise morfológica por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Os resultados mostraram que hematita, magnetita, goethita são as fases predominantes. A análise química por FRX mostrou que o resíduo apresenta baixos teores de sílica (SiO2) e alumina (Al2O3) associados a elevados teores de óxido de ferro III (Fe2O3). Dessa forma, a caracterização do pó de balão mostrou que esse resíduo apresenta-se como um potencial constituinte mássico cerâmico e que os elevados teores de óxido ferro podem contribuir para melhorar a cor dos produtos finais.

This paper presents a modelling tool that can be used to predict the behaviour of solvent extraction processes. In particular, this model allows calculating metal extraction efficiency as a function of pH, solvent flowrate, stripping flowrate and aqueous feed flowrate in the mixers-settlers. An existing mining company plans to extend their surface coal mining operations in central Pennsylvania. Although the proposed site contains pyritic material, the results of the acid-base accounting for the site show an overall NP:MPA ratio of 4.26:1 for the entire site. The pyritic material is, however, associated with the lower of the three seams to? be mined. If traditional dragline mining methods were used, this would result in the acidic material being placed at the top of the spoil piles, exposing it to air and water, and therefore to the formation of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). Further concerns are associated with the fact that the alkaline material is not distributed evenly over the mine site. In order to prevent the formation of AMD, the company has proposed to mine the area using Truck/Shovel mining methods. This technique offers a more flexible alternative for cut sequencing and for the selective placement of waste material. Working with the Department of Mineral Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, a mine plan was developed for this site. This plan results in the layering of the alkaline and acidic spoil in order to achieve an overall net alkalinity in all spoil areas. Mining of this site should therefore not result in the formation of AMD.

The mining industry is an important economical factor in Vietnam. Mining is presently being conducted at about 60 locations and at over 1000 mines. Petroleum extraction and coal mining are the most important parts of industry though metals such as zinc, tin, chromites, iron are also extracted. Last year the sector produced 20 million tons of crude oil, 26 million tons of coal and 500,000 tons of apatite. In particular, Vietnam is one of the world?s largest producers of anthracite, and it is one of the top producers of ilmenite and zircon in the Asia-Pacific region. The government intends to increase the mining production on all levels, however, at present one can observe adverse impacts of the mining activities on the natural environment such as insufficient waste dump rehabilitation, occurrence of acid mine drainage, mining subsidence and emissions as well as lack of appropriate water treatment facilities. This paper describes the current mining situation, future perspectives, the major environmental challenges of the country and approaches to solve these problems. Particular emphasis will be given to the research project ?RAME ? Research Association on Mining and Environment in Vietnam?, a venture carried out by universities, research centres and industry. This project is worked out in collaboration with the national Vietnamese coal and industrial minerals company VINACOMIN.

Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industries despite 25 years of regulation. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise sample data collected from 2000 to 2002 show that 65% of the equipment whose operators exceeded 100% noise dosage is comprised of seven different types of machines. The continuous mining machine is first among all the equipment with 35% of the noise overexposures. The ational Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce excessive exposure for operators of continuous mining machines and preventing additional cases of oise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) by developing low-cost retrofit noise controls for mining equipment. This paper describes a noise control for reducing the noise overexposures of continuous mining machine operators. Underground results show a 26.4% and 27.4% noise exposure reduction for the continuous mining machine operator. This research is providing the mining community with an additional noise control to be utilized on continuous mining machines, therefore reducing operator noise overexposure. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls for the continuous mining machine chain conveyor, will provide operators of these machines an opportunity to be within the MS HA-Permissible Exposure Limit (MSHA-PEL).

Exploration for new pools of gas in the Oriskany sand and continued exploitation of areas already known to be productive in that sand were the main features of petroleum activity in West Virginia during 1938. To a considerable extent the exploration program resulted in failure, but the extension of former areas was eminently successful. Throughout the state, in general, less drilling was done than in 1937. According to the West Virginia Department of Mines, only 631 permits to drill were issued, as compared to 1034 in 1937. The account of operations, as reported by trade journals and other sources, shows that 766 wells were drilled, resulting in 131 oil wells with 1609 bbl. of daily production; 484 gas wells with 1,232,216,000 cu. ft. of daily open flow; and 151 dry holes. Several discoveries indicate new pools of oil and gas; and several extensions of old gas pools have been made. In spite of a decreased number of total wells, the figures for new gas and oil are both larger than in 1937. The new oil average is 12.3 bbl. per well per day; the gas average is 2,545,900 cu. ft. per well per day, the ratio of dry holes to completions is 19.71 per cent. No general attempt was made to discover new pools of oil. A continued low price, coupled with reduced takings, combined to make drilling unattractive. The principal oil wells completed, by counties are: Boone, 6; Calhoun, 10; Clay, 7; Gilmer, 5; Kanawha, 5; Lincoln, 7; Pleasants, 13; Ritchie, 32; Roane, 6; Tyler, 7; and Wirt, 14. Production for the year, according to the Oil and Gas Journal, was 3,724,750 barrels. The leading counties in gas, with the number of successful wells in each, are: Boone, 16; Braxton, 13; Cabell, 47; Calhoun, 29; Doddridge, 10; Gilmer, 55; Kanawha, 127; Lincoln, 18; Ritchie, 29; Wayne, 19; and Wetzel, 26. Production for the year is estimated as 150,000,000,000 cubic feet. Pipe-line construction, which was extensive in 1937, was insignificant in 1938. Exploration was not as active as in 1937. Field prices of both oil and gas have severely declined.

O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a resistência à corrosão de dois aços alto teor de Manganês com relação à liga 9% Níquel em solução eletrólito 0,001M de NaCl. Para esta pesquisa foram utilizados dois aços com teores de Manganês de 22%, 27% e uma liga 9% Níquel que é amplamente utilizada na indústria petroquímica. Os ensaios realizados para comparação da resistência à corrosão foram o monitoramento do potencial de circuito aberto (OCP) e polarização linear anódica. Foi escolhida a solução de NaCl pela presença da maioria dos tanques de armazenamento e transporte de gás natural se localizarem próximos à região marítima portuária. Foram utilizadas as técnicas de Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), Microscopia óptica e Espectroscopia de Energia Dispersiva de Raios-X (EDS) para a caracterização dos produtos de corrosão. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que os aços alto Manganês apresentaram valores similares de resistência à corrosão, mas ainda inferiores em relação ao aço 9% Níquel.

O sucesso da utilização do método de reparo/prevenção de refratários de convertedores LD chamado Slag Splashing tem relação com as propriedades físico-químicas da escória, em especial a sua viscosidade. Através de uma simulação termodinâmica feita no software FactSage que tomou como base a equação de Einstein-Roscoe utilizando uma escória de composição representativa de uma escória industrial, junto de uma simulação a frio utilizando soluções representando escórias com variadas frações sólidas, foi possível correlacionar a viscosidade do modelo a frio, avaliando a possibilidade de transposição de resultados desse modelo para a prática industrial em escórias com frações sólidas de até 20%, sendo que acima desse valor um modelo mais assertivo deve ser restabelecido. Por simulação física a frio em um modelo de conversor de escala de 1/10 em relação aos conversores de 340 toneladas da Ternium Brasil, utilizando soluções representativas de escórias industriais com frações sólidas de 10 a 40%, avaliou-se a influência da viscosidade na intensidade na projeção de escória durante o processo do Slag Splashing, deixando claro o efeito da fluidez ou da alta viscosidade na altura, localização e qualidade das projeções.

Diferentes resíduos são gerados pelas indústrias siderúrgicas, dentre eles o resíduo dos trituradores de sucatas (RTS). O RTS gerado pelas siderúrgicas brasileiras se difere dos demais países devido aos materiais que são alimentados no triturador. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as características do RTS gerado por uma siderúrgica brasileira. As seguintes técnicas foram utilizadas: identificação e quantificação dos principais constituintes, análise termogravimétrica, imediata, elementar, poder calorífico superior e teor de cloro e metais. Os principais polímeros presentes no RTS foram o poliestireno e o polietileno. A partir dos resultados de análise imediata, elementar e de poder calorífico superior do RTS, verificou-se uma elevada quantidade de matéria volátil (76,22% ± 6,90). Os altos teores de carbono (72,92%) e hidrogênio (9,86%), foram atribuídos à elevada quantidade de polímeros e borrachas presentes no resíduo. O teor de enxofre (0,21%) pode ser atribuído a presença de borracha no resíduo, enquanto o teor de cloro (1,33% ± 0,13) pode ser atribuído a presença do PVC no resíduo. O poder calorífico superior do RTS foi de 30,01 ± 1,22 MJ/kg, de forma que uma avaliação termoquímica mostra-se como uma técnica atrativa para a sua destinação final.

O presente trabalho buscou explorar a aplicação da nanoindentação instrumentada na caracterização microestrutural e mecânica de materiais metálicos. Para isso foi utilizado um ultramicrodurômetro (Shimadzu, modelo DUH–211S) e um microscópio (Olympus, modelo BX51M) a fim de analisar uma chapa laminada a quente de uma liga de alumínio 7475-T7351. De acordo com algumas das possibilidades apresentadas, pode-se concluir que a nanoindentação instrumentada é uma ferramenta poderosa para a caracterização de materiais metálicos.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo principal sintetizar e caracterizar nanopartículas de ferro de valência zero (nFVZ) para degradação de substâncias recalcitrantes, através de Processos Oxidativos Avançados. A primeira etapa consiste na sintetização nFVZ, através da reação utilizando reagentes ferrosos, com o agente redutor borohidreto de sódio, em condições controladas (pH, temperatura e velocidade de agitação do sistema). Agentes complexantes e dispersantes, como o ácido cítrico e o etilenoglicol, respectivamente, foram utilizados durante a sinterização para avaliar a variação da formação do tamanho das partículas obtidas. A caracterização foi realizada através dos ensaios de distribuição de tamanho de partículas, microscopia óptica interfacial e microscopia eletrônica de transmissão (MET). Foi observado que a concentração de ácido cítrico de 0,009 mols e o volume de 100 mL de etilenoglicol, mostraram-se como os melhores valores obtidos. Todavia o ácido se tornou um interferente na reação ao ser utilizado com o SDS. Os resultados da microscopia eletrônica de transmissão comprovam que as partículas obtidas estão na escala nanométrica.

This study was made to present the mining methods and costs of a uranium mine typical of other mines in the highly productive Westwater Canyon member of the Morrison formation in New Mexico. Four mining methods have been used at the Section 23 mine: the retreat- room-and-pillar method, a sublevel-slicing method (also called top-slicing), the horizontal-cut-and-fill method, and a modification of the ring-drill method. The application of the methods at this mine and at other mines in the area should be of benefit to operators with similar problems. Ore bodies in the Section 23 mine are irregularly shaped and vary in size, in rock strength, in moisture content, and in uranium concentrations; different mining methods are required and mining costs are not constant. A 6-month period of operation at the Section 23 mine was analyzed and mining costs, not including amortization, depreciation, or Federal taxes, averaged about $6.80 per ton.

This report discusses in detail laboratory and pilot-plant tests conducted from January 1951 until January 1955 at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg., on defluorination and recovery of evolved fluorine from phosphate rock. Results of use tests of defluorinated phosphate rock by cooperating agricultural colleges and the United States Department of Agriculture are also included. In 1954 the consumption of fluorspar, the only domestic fluorine-bearing mineral of commercial importance, was approximately 478,000 short tons; 245,000 tons was from domestic mines. The production of marketable phosphate rock in the same period was about 13,800,000 long tons. Of this total amount, approximately 15 percent was produced in the West. From the viewpoint of conservation and utilization of fluorine as a natural resource, it is interesting to note that the total estimated quantity of fluorine in domestically produced phosphate rock is more than double that present in domestically mined fluorspar.

ONE hundred miles from Vancouver, at an elevation of 4,000 feet, is the Pioneer mine. It is situated on Cadwallader creek, a tributary of Bridge river, and is reached by travelling from Vancouver to Squamish by boat, a distance of thirty-two miles, from there by train to Bridge River (one hundred and seven miles), and finally by automobile across Mission mountain .(7,000 ft. elevation) to the mine (fifty-six miles): a total distance of one hundred and ninety-five miles. Prior to 1924, many Companies had examined the Pioneer, which had been developed by shaft to a depth of 200 feet, but, while values were good, the small size of the ore-shoot discouraged large investors. In July, of that year, opera-tions were re-commenced by the late David Sloan and, on sinking further, the ore-shoot was found to lengthen greatly as well as to ex-tend in depth, while remarkable gold values also were encountered. When, later, the price of gold rose from $20 to $35 per ounce, the mine was in an excellent position to take full advantage of the increase + and not only became an extremely profitable enterprise itself but its success greatly stimulated the search for and development of other 1-gold properties in British Columbia.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation of manganese mineral occurrences in continental United States, the Bureau of Mines has collected several lots of ore from properties in the vicinity of Long Valley, Ariz. The ore occurs as irregular and random pockets in a brecciated zone. As only high-grade portions of the deposits obtained by selective mining would be acceptable as commercial-grade manganese ores, an investigation was made to determine amenability of the ores to concentration by ore-dressing methods. Several types of ores, differing in grade and mineral associations, were studied.Ores from the Vaiazza property are of special interest, owing to the successful application of silica flotation for their concentration. Ores from the Shroup and Conner-Hough properties are very similar but differ somewhat in their response to ore-dressing Method's. In all instances, the man¬ganese minerals are psilomelane and pyrolusite, with minor amounts of other manganese oxides. The country rook is a brecciated limestone; the diluent in the high-grade ore pockets is chiefly silica. The low-grade manganese ores are limestone replacements, and the chief gangue material, of course, is limestone."

TULSA SECTION At the smoker concluding the two day meeting of the Tulsa section of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Tulsa, Okla., Feb. 26, 1919, Dr. Willis T. Lee, the new head of the Geological Department of the University of Oklahoma, was introduced to the assembled geologists and mining engineers. Dr. Lee requested that the geologists and engineers who were making a specialty of petroleum geology assist him in giving a good course in practical oil geology in the Geological Department of the University. After a motion offering the services of all present in giving lectures on their special subjects had been adopted, Dr. Perrine of Hutchinson, Kans., named the geologists who were pledged to give lectures in Dr. Lee's course. The students in geology at Norman are assured of the latest information regarding practical work in petroleum geology and will have the inspiration derived from contact with men who are actually at work upon the problems which they are studying. Dr. Lee and President Brooks of the University are to be congratulated upon the introduction of this .method of instruction. The plan thus put into operation is similar to the graduate system of coaching in athletics followed at many of the large universities; what is good for instruction in athletics should also prove good for instruction in applied geology.

ON Sept. 24, 1875, a remarkable deposit of silver ore was discovered by James Ryan and Samuel Hawkes at the east base of Grampian Hill in central Beaver County, Utah.. A shaft was begun and had been sunk about 30 ft. in ore when the claim was sold on Feb. 17, 1876, to A. G. Campbell, Matthew Cullen, Dennis Ryan, and A. Byram for $25,000. To them is due the credit of having developed the mine and started the district on the road to its present state of prosperity. Their development resulted in proving the vein to a depth of over 280 ft. and about 2500 tons of ore was extracted and turned into bullion. In February, 1879, the mine came into the possession of the Horn Silver Mining Co., and since then over $65,000,000 worth of ore has been taken from the mine. Two smelters were built in 1878, near the mine; 400 men were employed underground, and 1000 on the surface, burning charcoal, hauling wood from the surrounding hills, and freighting and hauling hay for the hundreds of horses used in the work.
