Chemical vapor deposition of tungsten carbide on the surface of steel has been investigated at temperatures between 400 and 550C in an atmosphere containing tungsten hexafluoride, hydrogen and benzene. The tungsten fluoride flow rate was maintained at 20 ml/min. The hydrogen flow rate was at 100 ml/min. The benzene concentration varied from 1.15 to 5.56% in the reaction gas. It was observed that the higher the temperature, the faster the deposition rate for tungsten carbide. But the dependence of the deposition rate on the benzene concentration was not systematic. From the x-ray diffraction analysis, it was observed that W, W2C and WC are all presented in the coating. The amount of each phase presented in the coating depends on the temperature and, to a less extent, on the benzene concentration. The microhardness measurement has also been done for all CVD carbide coatings obtained in this study.

The Gulf Coast of southern Louisiana during the year of 1940 was subjected to an extensive exploration and development campaign, as a result of which 16 oil fields and about 38 new producing sands were found. Although this record of discovery appears in keeping with the rate of 1939 actually in amount of new proven reserves, it may fall short of that of the previous year. Only five or six of the discoveries rated as first-class or important fields at the close of the year. The most prominent new fields opened during the year were Neale field in Beaure-gard Parish, the West Cote Blanche field in St. Mary Parish, the Stella field and the West Bay field in Plaquemines Parish, and the Lake Salvador field in St. Charles Parish. There were many important oil-sand discoveries in proven fields, such as in the Bayou Perot field, the Golden Meadows field, the Iowa field, West Lake Verrett field, and the Venice field. During the year, 1047 weUs were drilled in southern Louisiana, of which 768 were completed as oil-producing wells, 17 as gas wells and 262 as dry holes. The Neale field in northwest Beauregard Parish is considered one of the most important discoveries of the year. The f~eld centers around the north half of sec. 26, 'Y.3 S., R.I I W., just north of the town of Neale. It was discovered by the Atlantic Refining Co., using reflection seismograph to locate the structure. Production was found in the second well drilled in the Wilcox sand on the downthrown side of a fault. The structure is known as the "Tepetate" type, being similar to that of the well-known Tepetate field. There were 12 oil wells and 3 dry holes drilled during the year. The Wilcox sand in this field occurs between 8350 and 8400 ft. and averages 30 ft. in thickness. The West Cote Blanche Bay field, in West Cote Blanche Bay, St. Mary Parish, is a 1940 discovery by the Texas Company, credited to reflection seismograph exploration. The oil is from two sands occurring at 3110 to 3140 ft. and from 4950 to 5020 it. Four wells were drilled during the year, three oil wells and one dry hole. The deepest hole drilled reached 9491 ft. without encountering salt or dome material. In Plaquemines Parish, south of New Orleans, the California company has a new field known as the Stella field. The sand was found at a depth of 7485 ft., and 5 ft. of perforations made a well capable of producing 486 bbl. of oil in 24 hr. through a 9.is-in. choke. The oil is 42" gravity. The discovery well was drilled to a total depth of 10,258 ft. and other producing sands were indicated. A good field appears assured, although only one well was completed within the year. The Lake Salvador field, in the center of Lake Salvador, St. Charles Parish, gives promise of being one of the most important discoveries of the year. The discovery well was perforated at 9775 to 9800 ft. making 850 bbl. of 33.7° gravity oil daily through a 1/4-in. choke. FROM the old-fashioned " grab-sample " to the modern timing- . device, which takes a machine-sample with mathematical precision, there is a wide gap which was only crossed' by many years of toil and unremitting endeavor. Even to-day, notwithstanding the advancement in the art, "grab-sampling" is still practiced-sometimes to afford the unscrupulous mine-promoter a basis for fairy-tales with which to entrap the too-gullible investor, and often by milling and smelting companies to determine the amount of moisture in custom-ores. The latter practice is almost as reprehensible as the former, and it causes more trouble and ill-feeling between seller and buyer than all other factors put together. No reputable concern to-day would think of attempting to determine by grab-sampling the amount of gold, silver, lead, or copper contained in an ore, and yet many buyers expect the miner to accept the results of grab-sampling in the determination of the amount of water contained in the ore, forgetting that accurate results are just as necessary here as in the determination of the metals, because the result determines the percentage of weight of the ore which shall be excluded and considered to have no value whatever. Samples for the determination of moisture should be taken with as great care as samples for the determination of. metallic content, and in order to avoid the extra expense of a separate operation moisture-samples should be taken from the sample-safe. As the sample reaches the sample-bin in a smaller stream and by a more circuitous route than the "reject" travels in its path to the outgoing car, it loses more moisture en route, and a constant should be added to compensate for this difference. Carefully-conducted experiments have shown that the difference in loss of moisture between the two routes does not exceed 10 per cent. in summer and 7 per cent.. in winter. For instance,

"A well-considered composite of ZA-27 reinforced with weight percentage 0, 2, 4, and 6% of alwninite particulate has been made by compocasting technique. The elastic properties of ZA- 27 /alwniniute particulate composite were determined by using U1M. The results showed that the modulus of elasticity and UTS of the composite gradually increases with increase in the wt.% of reinforcement. However, the overall ductility decreased monotonically with an increase in reinforcement. The results of these tests· as well as the predictions of several model~ for composite strengthening available in the literature were compared with experimental results. The data observed from Young's modulus by measurements studies were compared with theoretical results predicted by Eshelby model.IntroductionMetal matrix composites (MMCs) have received increasing attention in _the recent decades as engineering materials. An experimental study on interparticle breakage of three iron ores was carried out by compressive stressing of particle-bed in a piston-die device. The feeds to the particle-bed stressing were five narrow size fractions in the size range of 0.2~3.2 mm respectively and a wide size fraction of 0/4.0 mm. The pressures applied were in the range between 30 and 360 MPa. The results show that the energy absorption of the particle bed increases linearly with the pressure; the increase of the product fineness with the pressure declines as the pressure goes up; and the product size distributions resulting from interparticle breakage of different narrow size fractions have no self-similarity. Using data obtained from the piston-die compressive stressing test, the suitability of a previously-developed material-characterization model for interparticle breakage was verified for these ores. It is shown that the particle-bed compression test conducted with piston-die device in lab-scale may provide a cost-effective way of studying and modelling size-reduction of ore materials by interparticle breakage.

"Working on or near water at active, closed or abandoned mine sites is inherently dangerous. Between 1996 and 1999, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported 17 fatalities involving drowning at U.S. metal, non metal and coal mines (MSHA, 2000). Openpit mines which fill with water following mine closure, called pit lakes, present numerous risks to environmental monitoring teams including: a) drowning, b) hypothermia, c) falls to the ground from the top of high walls, d) collapse of unstable access roads, e) rock falls and avalanches from pit walls, f) avalanchegenerated tsunamis traveling across the lake surface and g) rapid degassing events.Some pit lakes are simply not safely or easily accessible for ongoing monitoring. However, the routine collection of water samples from the entire water column on a regular basis is needed to monitor the evolution of water quality over time, verify the accuracy of numerical predictions and, ultimately, manage lake water chemistry and ecological risks. For pit lakes with surface water discharge, regular monitoring is used to appropriately design and adjust water treatment plants in order to produce acceptable site discharge water quality.As a product of these risks and the need for water samples, mining companies spend considerable expense on pit lake safety as part of monitoring programs. This includes training personnel for on water duties and hazards, purchasing or hiring specialized equipment and personnel (such as boats, boat operators, personal floatation devices and cold-water clothing called mustang suits), stabilizing pit walls and maintaining safe access roads to the lake surface and employing spotters who can directly communicate with emergency medical services to watch sampling activities because cell phones and radio signals can be blocked by pit walls. Some sites utilize redundancy to prepare for unexpected incidents and accidents. For example, one Canadian mining company requires two boats on the water during pit lake sampling events, with a third boat on the shoreline, gassed and ready to go. In addition, water samplers are required to hold Marine Emergency Duties training to ensure the entire boat crew is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel in the event of an accident."

A Unidade Niquelândia da Votorantim Metais possui 9 fornos multi andares usados para a redução de minérios lateríticos com o uso de monóxido de carbono e hidrogênio como agentes redutores. Cada forno possui 10 câmaras de combustão para geração destes gases que trabalham em contra-corrente com o minério alimentado pelo topo do forno. Já utilizado como combustível óleo A2 incorporado ao minério bem como sua combustão em câmaras. O trabalho consiste na substituição do óleo por uma emulsão de combustíveis líquidos e sólidos a fim de flexibilizar a matriz energética e promover redução do cash cost sem queda na eficiência operacional. A utilização industrial da emulsão teve início em 2006 através da sua incorporação ao minério alimentado na proporção de 19% de coque de petróleo e 81% de óleo A2 em poder calorífico e em 2014 esta mistura alcançou a proporção de 39% de coque e 61% de óleo A1. Em paralelo e após testes de combustão em planta piloto, foram realizados testes industriais de queima também nas câmaras de combustão em dezembro de 2012. Com o bom desempenho, em dezembro de 2013, 14 das 90 câmaras já estavam nesta condição com previsão de 20 câmaras até junho de 2014 otimizando a capacidade da estação de óleo+coque. Com isto a substituição (%) global dos fornos em poder calorífico avançou de 6,38% em 2011 para 16,12% em 2014 acumulados até abril. Com uma nova estação existe a possibilidade de operar 90 câmaras nesta condição e chegar a um valor de 39% de substituição global.

Durante mucho tiempo la explotación del azufre en el interior del Perú, ha sido de manera regular dado su bajo consumo nacional y cotización en el mercado peruano. Asi, solo ciertos yacimientos ubicados en el norte de nuestro país producen y generan divisas que no sobrepasan los 6 millones de soles. En el marco de esta situación, el objetivo del siguiente estudio, pretende reactivar el consumo nacional de los yacimientos del Sur del país, -en tanto volumen e importancia comercial por medio del uso de un método de beneficio apropiado. La formación de los yacimientos del Sur, a diferencia de los de Piura y Bayovar, se da por la emanación postvolcánica de gases sulfurosos, generandoimpregnaciones de azufre en las lavas y tufos del Terciario Superior y Cuaternario. Posteriormente se produjeron fracturas en las zonas contíguas de los volcanes, formando depósitos lenticulares de extensión variable. Dichos depósitos son superficiales puesto que solo cerca de este espacio se puede mantener la oxidación del sulfuro de hidrógeno y los gases están a temperatura baja para depositar azufre. En cuanto al costo del azufre tenemos el costo de explotación, beneficio, transporte y embarque. Finalmente, se deduce que la fundición del azufre como la filtración, soliflucción pueden ser favorables en el uso de métodos de explotación menos costosos, asi como el incremento de la explotación depende de un mercado común estable y de un cálculo exacto de los costos de producción.

"The mechanism of joint action of a frother (alpha-terpineol) and a collector (ethyl xanthate) in the flotation of chalcocite has been examined. In order to study the dynamic effects of frother and collector in bubble-particle collisions, the following aspects were investigated : determination of zeta-potential. Measurements of the thickness of fluid film on the surface of chalcocite and adsorption of xanthate, as influenced by alpha-terpineol, induction time and flotation versus concentration of alpha-terpineol and ethyl xanthate.The mechanism of the adsorption-desorption phenomenon on chalcocite with regard to non-ionic molecules, e.g. a-terpineol, has been considered, and the influence of this on the stage and thickness of the intervening wet layer between a bubble and a particle, changing the probability of collision and attachment, is suggested."

The Bureau of Mines used a windowed cell to measure the phase-boundary pressures of two related series of gas-condensate fluid mixtures. Normal butane was added to the mixtures incrementally to determine its effectiveness for lowering phase-boundary pressure. All the experimental data were correlated, so that the pressure required to maintain light oils mixed with natural gas in the single phase may be computed for secondary recovery applications. The heavy hydrocarbon parts of the mixtures were distillation fractions of a Gulf Coast condensate. Intermediate normal hydrocarbons in the butane-heptane range and natural gas were added to the fractions in selected proportions, so that phase-diagram pressures of 26 fluids were actually studied. The experimental range of temperatures was 50° to 280° F. Two correlations were developed to represent phase-boundary pressures by means of a polynomial. Independent variables represent natural gas content, disparity of properties of components comprising the mixtures, and temperature. A fourth variable, for one correlation only, was the quantity of normal butane added to the original mixtures. The latter correlation with four independent variables contains 15 coefficients and is estimated to be accurate to 135 psi.

This volume contains a summary of the results of past analyses on U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. H0122061 which are relevant to electromagnetic location in mine rescue situations. The analytical results indicated that detection of a trapped miner equipped with a special transmitter is feasible in most situations. Location of the miner by surface measurements is also generally feasible within certain errors. The feasibility of miner detection and the accuracy of miner location have been examined theoretically for a wide variety of situations. Agreement with experimental results is generally good in cases where measurements are available.

That circular dealt with the drilling of the first 12 of the 24 potash tests made by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey; this report is concerned with the drilling of the last 12 tests. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer is indebted to R. E. "Canada developed pioneering rare earth solvent extraction methods to recover the rare earths and thorium as by-products of uranium recovery operations in Elliot Lake, Ontario, and was a major supplier of these key elements from about 1960 until 1990. At one stage, Elliot Lake was supplying perhaps one third of the world’s yttrium as well as much of its thorium. This paper reviews the development of Canada’s early rare earth and thorium production facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths and thorium were first identified in the early 19th century but were little more than curiosities for the next century. However, in the mid-1960s the invention of rare earth-based phosphors for the cathode ray picture tube used in colour television sets launched a major demand for certain rare earths.The use of thorium as an alloying agent in aircraft and missiles grew rapidly in the late 1950s. In the same period, demand for uranium for both weapons and power production soared. Also in the late 1950s, the Elliot Lake uranium-thorium-rare earth deposits (also known as the Blind River deposits) were discovered. This conjugation of events led to uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp, quickly followed by the co-production of thorium and, later, the rare earths.Uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp continued from 1955 to 1996. Thorium was produced continuously from 1959 to 1969. Rare earths were produced, intermittently, from 1965 to 1990. Complete production records are not readily available but unquestionably Elliot Lake made a significant contribution to world thorium and the rare earth production. This paper, presented earlier in an abbreviated form (Goode, 2012), is intended to present as much of the information that is available."

We studied yttrium extraction from untreated zircon sand processing waste tailings. Xenotime mineral as the rare earth element source with an abundance of yttrium (REY) was detected in sufficient grade for extraction. As much as 9.03% yttrium exists in zircon tailings (analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry). The presence of yttrium was confirmed by X-ray diffractometry in xenotime minerals, which are yttrium carriers (Y-PO4). The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of leaching conditions on yttrium recovery from zircon sand after alkaline fusion treatment. Alkaline fusion was chosen to decompose phosphate into hydroxide in the xenotimemineral,which will reduce further required hydrometallurgical processing.Alkaline fusionwas carried out for 3 h at 450 °C, with a ratio of sodium hydroxide to zircon tailings sand of ~ 1:1. The alkaline fusion product was leached with water, followed by hydrochloric acid treatment to leach the yttrium. Yttrium recovery reached 87% under optimum conditions (60 °C, 1MHCl, and solid-to-liquid ratio = 1/10 for 7.5 min). A suitable model for yttrium dissolution with hydrochloric acid was diffusion through a solid particle ash layer. The calculated activation energy (EA) for this model was 20.21 kJ/mol.

Who We Are Farmland Hydro (FHLP) is a Limited Partnership formed by Farmland Industries, the largest U.S. farmers’ cooperative, located in Kansas City, MO, and Norsk Hydro, a large Norwegian company engaged in fertilizer, petroleum and the specialty metals industry. Both of our parent companies have a long history of commitment to the fertilizer industry. This year, Farmland Industry celebrates its 71st year in the business, and Norsk Hydro celebrates its 100th operating year! We employ approximately 300 associates in Central Florida. What We Do Farmland has been active in Hardee County, FL since the 1970’s as a large landowner and citrus grower. We plan to expand this activity into phosphate rock mining. The phosphate rock produced here will be shipped to our nearby chemical fertilizer complex in Polk County, where we produce quality phosphate products - liquid and granular fertilizers. Of the phosphate rock mined, 90% is used to make fertilizer. Other uses include animal feed, vitamins, medicine, light bulbs, soft drinks, film, flame resistant fabric, optical glass, toothpaste, bone china and other consumer products.
