The slag-tailings based artificial reef concrete (ARC) is made of CaO-CaSO4 activated granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) as cementitious material and deslimed gold ore tailings as aggregate. In order to investigate the potential application of the material as ARC, the strength development, hydration characteristics and application performance were investigated under different preparation conditions. Results indicated that using seawater as the mixing water can effectively promote the hydration of slag and generate a large amount of hydration products such as ettringite, CSH gel, hydrotalcite and Friedel ’s salt in the early curing period and so render the material with good early compressive strength. Seawater curing can also accelerate the hydration reaction in the early stage of hydration. The hydration reaction of slag and the compressive strength of ARC can be effectively promoted by increasing the specific surface area of slag. The 28-day compressive strength of the slag-tailings based ARC prepared with 30-50% CaO-CaSO4 activated slag and 50-70% tailings can reach to 19.88-42.87 MPa. Also, the material has a low surface pH value, good resistance to chloride ion penetration, and sulfate corrosion. This paper proposes a classification model to predict the split coefficient of gold ore particles as a function of the particle size and gold content. The model is calibrated and validated using data obtained from the sampling of an industrial grinding circuit. Model calibration is based on a complete simulation of the circuit and involves parameters related to the gold grain distribution in the ore as well as a grinding and liberation model. Since cyanide is added into the studied grinding circuit, assumptions related to gold dissolution in the mills are made to allow simulation results which reflect industrial behaviour patterns.

Cu–Ti alloy wires doped with and without a small amount of Ni were fabricated by over-aging and using intense drawing procedures. For both the Cu–Ti alloys with and without Ni doping, the over- aged microstructure was occupied fully with a coarse lamella of Cu solid solution and β-Cu4Ti plates precipitated discontinuously by grain boundary reactions. The full-lamellar microstructure was developed much more rapidly by aging in multi steps at 873 K to 723 K rather than by isothermal aging at 723 K. Ni doping in Cu-Ti alloy was also effective to accelerate the formation of the lamellar microstructure. When drawing the over-aged alloy with inferior hardness but superior electrical conductivity, the strength increased steadily and eventually exceeded that for the wires drawn from the peak-aged alloy. In addition, the electrical conductivity of the wires drawn from the over-aged alloy was always much greater than that from the peak-aged alloy. Eventually, the procedure of over-aging, followed by intense drawing, could enhance both the strength and electrical conductivity of Cu-Ti alloys, whichever they contain a small amount of Ni or not, rather than the conventional peak-aging and drawing process. INTRODUCTION Cu-based alloy wires, which have an excellent combination of strength and electrical conductivity, have attracted extensive attention for highly mechanically stressed electrical devices, such as conductive lead wires and wires in suspension springs. Cu-Be alloys are widely used for such electrical components owing to their combination of strength and electrical conductivity among industrial Cu-based alloys. However, since beryllium is potentially toxic and also a rare element, substitute materials for Cu-Be alloys have been searched for several decades. Age-hardenable Cu–Ti based alloys have been proposed as candidates because their mechanical and physical properties are comparable to those of Cu-Be alloys; however, their electrical conductivity is inferior (Datta & Soffa, 1976; Soffa & Laughlin, 2004). In order to satisfy the requirement of downsizing and streamlining electrical devices, further improvement of the mechanical and electrical properties of Cu–Ti alloy wires is needed. Age-hardenable Cu–Ti alloys, which contain approximately 3 to 6 at.% Ti, are typically prepared using a solid solution treatment above 1100 K and then aging at a moderate temperature of 700 K to 800 K. It has been revealed that the microstructural events during aging progress as follows (Soffa & Laughlin, 2004): (1) compositional modulation of the parent supersaturated Cu solid solution in an initial aging stage (Laughlin & Cahn, 1975), (2) continuous nucleation and growth of fine needle-shaped precipitates of metastable β’-Cu4Ti with a tetragonal structure in a peak-aged stage, and (3) discontinuous precipitation of cellular components laminating the plates of a terminal Cu solid solution and stable β-Cu4Ti with an orthorhombic structure at the grain boundaries in an over-aging stage. It has been also accepted that the highest number density of dispersed fine β’-Cu4Ti needles should contribute to maximal strengthening. On the other hand, decease of the strength in the over-aging stage occurs due to the replacement of the fine β’- Cu4Ti needles with cellular components containing coarse β-Cu4Ti plates, while the electrical conductivity is significantly enhanced due to the depletion of solute Ti in the Cu matrix. This suggests that a combination of strength and electrical conductivity for age-hardenable Cu-Ti alloys is in a trade-off relationship, and that innovative improvement of both properties might be limited to tuning the aging conditions.

This project and final report represent an effort to collect, analyze, and verify reliability and performance data on currently available medium -to-high seam models of continuous miners being used in underground coal mining. The analysis determined availability, mean time and tons between failures, amounts of down time associated with various failures, labor and part costs required to correct failures, and various indices of maintainability. Machine performance and reliability are discussed relative to cumulative tons (machine age) produced and production rates (machine loading). It was determined that performance can be significantly improved given preventive maintenance programs that will increase machine availability.

Este trabalho apresenta uma nova abordagem sobre o emprego sequencial dos tratamentos termoquímicos de superfície utilizando a tecnologia de plasma. No trabalho são avaliados tratamentos de superfície, individuais e sequenciais, de nitretação/cementação. Os tratamentos foram realizados no campo ferrítico com o objetivo de manter as tolerâncias dimensionais. Amostras de aços AISI 1005 foram tratadas em descarga luminescente anormal sendo realizados ciclos únicos de cementação e nitretação e também ciclos conjuntos de nitretação + cementação. Todos os tratamentos foram realizados a 500°C com um tempo de patamar de 3 horas para cada tratamento. A composição da mistura gasosa variou de acordo com o tratamento: nitretação - 5%N2 + 95%H2 ou 3%N2 + 97%H2; cementação - 5%CH4 + 95%H2. A caracterização microestrutural das amostras foi realizada por microscopia óptica e MEV além de difração de raios-X. Análises de microdureza também foram realizadas. As analises de raios-X mostraram que ocorre a estabilização de uma camada de cementita nos tratamentos de cementação. Nas amostras nitretadas em atmosfera contendo 5% de N2 foi observada a presença de camada de compostos. Já em atmosferas contendo 3% de N2 não houve a formação da camada de compostos. A maior profundidade de endurecimento foi obtida para a amostra nitretada + cementada.

"In the processing of molten metals, it is extremely important to monitor continuously the concentration levels of various minor elements. In the production of common metals like copper, iron and aluminium electrochemical sensors involving solid as well as liquid electrolytes are being increasingly used to measure the concentrations of minor elements. The present paper deals with the electrochemical principles underlying these measurements and the possible errors involved. One of the major difficulties in the case of the solid electrolytes is to correct for the consequences of the electronic contribution to the conduction of the electrolyte.The application of the electrochemical sensors for molten metals processing involves designing of these probes to withstand the industrial operating conditions. In this respect, significant achievements have been made with respect to the design of oxygen probes for liquid metals in general and liquid copper in particular. Some of the salient design features are discussed in the paper. The application of auxiliary electrodes for impurities in molten metals like phosphorus in copper and silicon in iron are taken up. The development of oxygen sensors for slags is given special attention. Recent developments in the field of sensor technology, as applied to metals processing are highlighted.1. IntroductionThe rapid technological advancement today require precise control of the process parameters and the impurity levels. Most of the molten metals processing in industrialized countries are often steered by suitable computer models, either phenomenological or simulations based on theoretical principles. These models often require that the process parameters are continuously monitored so that the progress is followed and modified suitably as and when required. It is common practice to measure temperatures by incorporating temperature sensors at the various strategic points of the reactor. In the case of monitoring the composition changes in the various phases, the method of sampling followed by routine chemical analysis involves a time lag as well as uncertainties in sampling and analysis. In this respect, electrochemical sensors have the advantage of generating accurate data when properly applied and increasing attention is being paid in the development of electrochemical sensors for various common species in molten metals processing. In the present paper, the developments in this area over the years are outlined and typical process applications are discussed. A greater emphasis will be laid on sensors based on oxygen conducting electrolytes and their application to the production of common metals like iron and copper."

O presente trabalho objetiva analisar a viabilidade técnica de recuperar parte do pó de balão, composto por finos de carvão e hematita, submetido primeiramente a tratamento termoquímico e posteriormente a campo magnético uniforme. Foram analisadas amostras oriundas de pó de balão de alto forno funcionando com carvão mineral e alto forno com carvão vegetal. Os finos de carvão, recuperados na separação magnética, podem ser utilizados na sinterização, pelotização e até mesmo reinjetados nas ventaneiras. Essa reutilização tem um efeito muito importante, pois cada tonelada de fino carregado pela ventaneira corresponde a uma economia de carvão que não será carregado pelo topo, deixando mais volume útil livre para a carga de minério. O pó de balão foi submetido a um processo de redução da hematita em magnetita, em atmosfera adequada para a preservação de carbono, a fim de aumentar a susceptibilidade magnética e permitir a separação magnética. Os finos de minério residuais da recuperação dos finos de carvão não são perdidos, podem ser utilizados na fabricação de briquetes ou reutilizado na sinterização e pelotização. Após a redução, o material foi submetido à separação magnética, mostrando-se assim viável tecnicamente a separação e reaproveitamento dos finos de carvão e minério.

O objetivo principal deste artigo é apresentar os resultados obtidos com a modificação neste processo através da Substituição de um Table Feeder por um Alimentador de Correia e Melhorias realizadas em uma Balança Dosadora.

As part of a respirable mine-dust research program at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, spark-source mass spectrometry has been used for the semiquantitative determination of trace elements (200 ppm weight or less) in raw coals. In addition, several minor and major elements have been determined using this technique. Sixty-four elements ranging in concentration from 0.01 to 41,000 ppm weight were determined in one anthracite, two mvb, four lvb, and six hvab raw coal samples. The samples represented 10 coal seams located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Utah, and Colorado.

The growth and influence of Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd. in the nickel producing industry has been quite phenomenal. Although the company's Lynn Lake deposit in Manitoba was actually dis- covered in 1941, it was not until 1945, when men and materials were more readily available as a result of the end of World War II, that the area was staked and news of the discovery leaked out. As a result of the discovery, Professor Frank Forward of the University of British Columbia was commissioned by Eldon Brown, then President and Man- aging Director of Sherritt, to develop a new nickel refining process. A pilot plant, based on the results of Professor Forward's research, was constructed in Ottawa, and after the successful testing of the Lynn Lake ore, Chemical Construction Co. was given a con- tract in 1952 for construction of a producing plant. By 1954, the Fort Saskatchewan refinery was operating at an annual production of 15 million lb of nickel metal in the form of briquetts or powder. Capacity has since been increased to 30 million lb.

INTRODUCTION THE present study, based largely upon phase equilibrium diagrams and other theoretical considerations but nevertheless addressed primarily to the practical metallurgist, has been undertaken with a view to discovering what light can be thrown upon the role of alumina in slags. According to Liddell (23), "alumina apparently acts as .a base if much silica is present, as an acid if the silica is low, always as a nuisance." Newton and Wilson (26) state that .alumina "is never added intentionally, as it makes the slag viscous, and is generally an undesirable constituent of slags". Camp and Francis (3) sum up their views by saying, "alumina is seldom used intentionally as a flux, but it is present in nearly all raw material, hence unavoidable". One has only to read The Function of Alumina in Slags, by Henrich (I3), and the very extensive discussion that followed the presentation of his paper, to realize that, before the days of phase equilibrium diagrams, it was a very serious question indeed as to whether alumina should be calculated as a basic, acid, or neutral constituent. Opinions then differed widely, as well they might; today, even though no categorical answer can be given to the question raised, the function of alumina can be at least partly clarified by a study of the fundamental work done by the Geophysical Laboratory in Washington and by certain universities in both America and Europe. It will be a source of gratification to Canadian metallurgists and ceramists to know that work of this type is now under way in the recently organized Physical and Crystal Chemistry Section of the Mines Branch, Ottawa, and that results of practical value have in fact already been obtained.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the relation-ship between geologic features and linears. Cleats, kettlebottoms, and roof rolls were mapped and superimposed on the linear plots for a coal mine in West Virginia. No clear relationships were evident. This may be due, in part, to the mining practice of leaving head coal, which obscures geologic features that may exist in the roof. Future studies should concentrate on mines where roof is extensively exposed.

The bee alloys of the terminal solid solution of rhenium in niobium were investigated by X-ray diffraclion methods. The analysis of the broadening of the powder pattern peaks from the niobium-rich alloys, cold-worked by filing, showed evidence for faulting on (211) planes. The alloys with larger rhenium concentrations were brittle, and fractured when filed. The analysis of the shapes of the diffraction profiles from powders produced by hammering with steel plates) of these brittle alloys indicated that the broadening was due predominantly to platelets bounded by clibe planes. This result was consistent with the Laue patterns from single-cleazlage facets which showed evidence for clearage fracture on {100} planes. The influence of faulting on the mechanical properties of face-centered cubic (fcc) metals and alloys, i.e., how faulting affects the various dislocation configurations in fcc metals, is well-known.' The important question is whether or not faulting occurs in body-centered cubic (bcc) metals and alloys, and, furthermore, if faulting does occur, to what extent it affects the mechanical properties. Theoretical calculations indicate that the stacking-fault energy is rather high in most bcc metals.2 The results of sev-eral studies using transmission electron microscopy have indicated that faults are present in well-annealed and lightly deformed bcc metals and alloys, such as tungsten,3 vanadium,4 and Mo-Re alloys.5,6 These faults, as have been observed, may be stabilized by the presence of interstitial (C,N,O) atom segregation to the extended dislocations. In addition, there is considerable X-ray diffraction evidence for faulting in bee metals,7-8 using the same techniques that were successful for the study of faulting in fee metals and alloys.7 This X-ray diffraction method is currently the only technique applicable for the investigation of faulting in metals with high stacking fault energies, i.e., when severe amounts of deformation are required to produce sufficient amounts of faulting to be detectable by X-rays. The thinned films of heavily deformed metals will become opaque in the electron microscope due to the high dislocation densities present. In a previous investigation of faulting8 in bee metals of group Vb and VIb, the authors observed that niobium was ductile when filed at room temperature, and showed the highest density of faults on the (112) family of planes. A niobium-base alloy system was therefore chosen to study the effect of alloying on the occurrence of faults in a bcc alloy. There is a large range of terminal solid solubility of rhenium in the alloys of the bee refractory metals. All of the Group VIb-rhenium alloys, i.e., Cr-Re, Mo-Re, and W-Re, exhibit solid solution hardening without loss of ductility.9 In fact, the ductility reaches a maximum for alloys with compositions near to the limits of solubility. This enhanced ductility has been attributed to the lowering of the stacking-fault energy in the alloy; i.e., the increased amounts of twinning provide an additional mode of deformation, resulting in the observed high ductility.' Because of this demonstrated effect of rhenium in bee alloys, it was decided to study a series of alloys of Nb-Re. Using the same X-ray diffraction methods as described in the previous investigation,' one is able to identify the possible causes of broadening of the powder pattern peaks, e.q., particle size, microstrains, stacking faults, and/or twin faults. The separation of these various contributions to the measured peak shape is accomplished by the Warren-Averbach analysis.7 I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A series of seven bee solid solution alloys containing from 2.5 to 21.5 at. pct Re (remainder niobium) were prepared at the General Electric Research Laboratory. Buttons, weighing 25 g, were alloyed from electron-beam-melted niobium chips and random rhenium sheet by arc melting in a water-cooled copper crucible, under an argon atmosphere. The buttons were inverted and completely remelted to promote homogenization. The nominal alloy compositions are listed in Table I. Samples of the cold-worked alloys were obtained by filing to produce a powder for the X-ray study. Alloys too brittle to be filed were hammered with steel plates. The resultant filings or brittle impactings were screened through 150-mesh classifiers and compacted to the required shape for the diffractometer holder. The X-ray diffraction peaks were automatically recorded by fixed time counting at uniform 28 intervals, or by continuous registration with a ratemeter. In all cases, the (110)-(220) and (200)-(400) pairs of peaks and the (211), (310), (222), and (321) reflections were measured on a GE-XRD5 diffractometer using CuKa radiation with nickel filter or MoKct radiation and a LiF monochromator in the diffracted beam. The first part of the data reduction, completed with the aid of a series of programmed computations,10 was the analytical resolution of the Kol component of the diffraction profile. Os Aços Inoxidáveis Super Duplex (AISD) constituem sistemas termodinamicamente metaestáveis à temperatura ambiente, de elevada resistência à corrosão por pite em meios contendo cloreto e exibem moderada resistência mecânica. Os AISD possuem diversas aplicações industriais e a principal delas é no setor petroquímico, principalmente nas plataformas offshore. O propósito deste trabalho foi o de analisar a microestrutura e as propriedades mecânicas de juntas soldada por arco elétrico com eletrodo revestido (SMAW) em aços da norma ASTM A890/A890M graus 5A e 6A. As análises foram realizadas sem tratamento térmico pós-soldagem. Procedeu-se ensaios microestruturais (MO e MEV) e ensaios mecânicos (Charpy a -46 e 25 ºC e microdureza) na zona fundida (ZF). Os parâmetros de soldagem foram bem definidos para que não ocorresse fragilidade no material. A microdureza na zona fundida ficou entre 330 e 340 Vickers, o que está de acordo com o valor especificado pela norma Norsok, que é menor que 350 Vickers. No ensaio de impacto Charpy a absorção de energia foi em torno de 86 J para temperatura ambiente e 54 J a -46ºC para ambos os aços. A concentração de fases da austenita na zona fundida ficou em torno de 39%, dentro da faixa estabelecida pela norma ASTM A890/A890M que é de 35 a 65%. As fraturas mostraram-se predominantemente fibrosas, caracterizando elevada plasticidade do material, mesmo em temperaturas negativas.

WITH the exception of the work of Vogel,&apos; and Rolla and Iandelli, very little information has appeared in the literature on titanium binary systems with the rare earth elements. Rare-earth additions to titanium alloys may possibly parallel the beneficial effects on the physical properties of certain steels. Having this in mind, some knowledge of solubility limits and intermediate phases, if any, would be useful. An investigation of the titanium-rich Ti-Ce system was started. Alloy Preparation The iodide titanium from the New Jersey Zinc Co. and the cerium metal from the Institute for Atomic Research Ames Laboratory used in this work were supplied with the typical analysis shown —iodide titanium: 0.0065 pct Mn, 0.0022 pct Fe, 0.0015 pct Cu, and 0.0042 pct Pb; cerium metal: <0.01 pct Fe, <0.03 pct Si, <0.05 pct Ta, <0.02 pct Pr, <0.03 pct Ca, <0.02 pct Mg, with no trace of Nd, La, or Th. The cerium metal, stored in oil, was washed and scraped just before weighing into capped cups machined from iodide titanium. The cold hearth helium-arc furnace described by Schramm et al3 was used for melting. The alloy buttons from the arc-melted cup were cut in two, mounted, and examined. Homogeneous alloys were demounted and rolled to approximately 1/4-in.sq bars. Sections l/8 in. thick were cut from the bar to provide samples. The Ti-Ce alloy buttons analyzed for cerium were of the following composition: 0.19, 0.36, 0.48, 0.61, 1.15, 2.52, 3.06, 3.70, 4.30, 9.20, 14.26, and 18.50 wt pct. Nominal

This paper describes full-scale tests on ten large bored piles with grouted end conducted for three projects in the urban area of Fuzhou city. Test program included site investigation, pile installation and end grouting. The piles were instrumented with strain gages and load cells to determine load distribution in the piles. Test results showed that end grouting improves load-settlement performance of bored pile. End grouting significantly increases the shaft resistance near the pile end. The better the end condition, the greater the shaft resistance. The average shaft resistance of the bored piles with grouted end is much higher than that of piles without grouting.

Um dos tratamentos superficiais mais conhecidos é a nitretação a plasma, que consiste basicamente na introdução de nitrogênio na superfície da ferramenta, na forma de nitretos de elementos de liga, em solução sólida, a fim de criar uma camada protetora que aumenta a vida útil do material. A nitretação a plasma permite o controle da camada formada através do ajuste de parâmetros como temperatura, mistura gasosa e tempo de tratamento. Porém para ferramentas mais complexas é comumente utilizado um novo processo de nitretação, a nitretação a plasma com gaiola catódica que tem como principal diferencial o aquecimento homogêneo das peças, evitando assim a heterogeneidade da camada nitretada. Outra vantagem é que neste processo não é comum ocorrer o acumulo de plasma o que evita o efeito de borda. Neste trabalho, será analisada a importância da menor rugosidade superficial aliada a dureza superficial no comportamento tribológico do material no processo de nitretação a plasma com e sem gaiola catódica. O resultado dos ensaios tribológicos demonstraram que o incremento de dureza associado a uma menor rugosidade superficial obtido para a amostra nitretada com gaiola catódica promoveu uma redução no coeficiente de atrito ao longo do tempo. A rugosidade superficial média para as amostras nitretadas com gaiola catódica foi menor que as nitretadas via processo convencional, aproximando-se do valor obtido para às amostras que foram polidas.
