The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the separation of aluminum from copper dump leaching liquors using a supported liquid membrane. Aluminum was selectively transported through porous polypropylene impregnated with di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid in an aliphatic diluent. The effects of variables, such as solution composition, temperature, and extractant concentration, were measured with a three-level fractional factorial experimental design. Experimental results were used to derive equations for predicting transport rates for aluminum, iron, and copper. The major variables influencing aluminum transport were solution temperature, feed solution pH, aluminum concentration in the feed solution, and extractant concentration. Copper and iron transport rates were almost zero when aluminum transport rates were high. Measured aluminum transport rates under the best conditions of 55° C, pH 3.0, 16 g/L A13+, and 65 pct extractant solution confIrmed the predicted value of 210 f.'g/(cm2.h). Transport rates for iron and copper were less than 5 ug/(cm2.h) under these conditions. Aluminum was recovered from the stripping solutions by sparging with gaseous hydrogen chloride to crystallize aluminum chloride hexahydrate, which was calcined to alumina. Sparging crystallization regenerated the stripping acid for recycle.

A mathematical model of a decision is represented by the table in Figure 4. The numbers in the matrix are a measure of the effectiveness of each alternate for an objective. In this case, it is the per cent of desired profit that is satisfied by each alternate for each objective. By adding all of the values in a row, we have a measure of which alternative is best for both objectives. However, if you think that alternate 1 is necessarily better than alternate 2, you are wrong. Why? Because the weight of the objectives may not be equal. It could just be that this plant can sell more than it can produce, so that the loss in profit represented by increased sales is more than twice as important as reductions in costs. (See Figure 5). In that case, let us weigh objective 1 as 30 per cent and objective 2 as 70 per cent. It must also be obvious that the sum of all the "objective weights" must equal 100 per cent. "The Direct Nickel process is a hydrometallurgical technology being developed to treat nickel laterite ores by leaching at atmospheric pressure. The leaching process uses nitric acid in a relatively large excess, is thus non-selective, and much of the soluble iron goes into solution. The first stage of solution purification is iron hydrolysis and the Direct Nickel process utilises the colligative properties of the pregnant leach solution (PLS) to enable the removal nitric acid of varying concentrations via distillation. Once sufficient acid has been removed, the boiling point of the solution is increased allowing high temperatures (up to ~170°C) to be achieved under atmospheric pressure. The higher temperatures initiate the precipitation of the iron primarily as hematite and allow the removal of the acid generated by the hydrolysis reaction. The rejection of the iron is near complete with solution tenors typically falling from 65 g/L Fe, or more, to less than 50 mg/L Fe. The separation of clean nitric acid from the PLS at this stage allows for relatively simple acid recycling. A hematite product with iron content above 60% could also provide an extra revenue stream.INTRODUCTION The Direct Nickel (DNi) Process is a novel hydrometallurgical processing route designed to treat all types of nickel laterite ores in a single flow sheet using nitric acid under atmospheric conditions. A simplified flow sheet is shown in Figure 1.Between 2007 and 2012 the process was developed and refined at Direct Nickel’s laboratory within the CSIRO Minerals’ facilities in Perth, Australia, and in 2013 a series of pilot plant trials were run under continuous operating conditions. The process is designed to treat both limonite and saprolite in the same flow sheet, and after comminution, the blended ore is mixed with nitric acid and leached just below boiling point in agitated atmospheric leach tanks. The acid is added in excess, so typically for a blend of limonite and saprolite the acid addition can be in the order of 1.8-2.0 t acid/t dry ore. After a residence time of between 4-6 hours the majority of the soluble metals have leached into solution and the insoluble leach residue is separated from the pregnant leach solution (PLS) via counter-current decantation."

The Bureau of Mines has engaged m a program to determine the availability of land for mineral exploration and development in Alaska. Land availability, based on ownership and Federal and State laws and policies, is compared with mineral terranes and mineral deposits. This is the fifth of six regional studies, which cover the State with a comprehensive set of maps and data compilations. This study covers an area of 112.3 million acres in western Alaska. In July 1986, 41.0 million acres, 37% of the study area, were available for mineral exploration and development; 14.6 million acres, 13%, were available with restrictions; and 56.7 million acres, 50%, were unavailable. Nearly 65% of the unavailable land is classified as national parks, preserves, wildlife refuges, and wild and scenic rivers. Of the 34.0 million acres of mineral terranes that underlie the study area, 12.9 million acres, 38%, are available for exploration and development; 3.6 million acres, 11%, are available with restrictions; and 17.5 million acres, 51%, are unavailable.

Major Francis Hamilton Buchanan coined the term `laterite' (Latin; brick-rock) in 1807 for the red earths used for building blocks in southern India. Although these earths were actually weathered basalts, the term is now applied to weathering profiles developed upon a wide range of bedrocks. The Ni-laterites are a special class within the broad laterite family.

It has been pointed out by Stead1 that grains of considerable coarseness may be developed in steels containing from 3 to 5 per cent. of silicon, and in a previous paper2 the present author has shown that under the proper conditions of annealing single grains having an area of 50 sq. cm. may be obtained. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss in more detail the conditions promoting the growth of these grains, in the hope that the experiments described may throw some additional light upon the general problem of grain growth in metals. These silicon steels lend themselves particularly' well to such experiments because of the ease with which the change in structure may be followed and because of the fact that the effect of the carbon present is largely obliterated by the high percentage of silicon. This forms a solid solution with the iron, which acts very much like a pure metal. This alloy has been found to have but one critical point, viz., Ar2. This point, determined by Roberts-Austen for Hadfield's 4 per cent. Si alloy, was found to lie at 703" C. Vigouroux3, in working with pure Fe-Si alloys, finds this point to rise from 750" C. for 0.5 per cent. Si to 860" for 6 per cent. alloy, with a flat region in the curve from 3 to 4 per cent. Si. No accurate determination of this point has been undertaken by the present author, but it has been roughly determined to lie between 730" and 750:. In the preliminary experiments, some of which have been described in a previous paper, it was found that practically all of these steels, when annealed to 1,200" C. or higher, showed grains of comparatively large size. These grains varied in size, however, from about 4 sq. mm. to 50 sq. cm. (see Figs. 1 and 2) under the same conditions of anneal, and it was for the purpose of determining the cause of this difference in size that the experiments herein described were undertaken. Underground roof geology reconnaissance is being conducted by CONSOL Inc. to enhance mine productivity. Often, roof instability within mine entries is the consequence of highly variable geology that cannot always be detected from information provided by widely-spaced surface core holes. Utilizing a combination of roof drilling data, geophysical logs, and borehole camera and fiberscope observations, roof geology mapping is conducted within longwall development entries in areas of specific concern prior to commencement of longwall mining, Depending on the uniformity of the site-specific roof geology, data point spacing along the longwall development generally ranges from one to five crosscuts. Surface core hole data are correlated with the roof geology mapped underground to validate the underground observations. Detailed roof geology maps can then be produced to enable ground control engineers and mine management to select cost-effective ground control techniques. However, this procedure is not necessary or useful in all situations and it is employed only when there is strong geologic evidence to justify a closer inspection.

Uranium mill tailings, waste products of uranium extraction, contain hazardous constituents that if released into the atmosphere and groundwater could threaten our health and environment. To provide for safe disposal and control of these tailings, Congress enacted the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978 (Public Law 95-604). Subsequently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established standards for tailings disposal that limit radon emission into the air to 20 pCi m-2s-1 on an annual average basis (EPA 1983). The design life of the impoundment is to be 1000 years where practicable, but 200 years at least. To facilitate the design of containment systems that will meet the EPA standards, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Department of Energy (DOE) are sponsoring research at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL)* to develop the necessary technology. Earthen and asphalt materials have been evaluated for use as radon barriers (Hartley 1983) and as liners to minimize leaching (Buelt 1983). Herbicide and rock barriers against biological intrusion have been evaluated (Cline 1982). Surface stabilization techniques have been investigated to maintain the long-term effectiveness of a containment system that must be protected from wind and water erosion, chemical and physical degradation, and biological disturbance.

"Syncrude's overburden removal requirement ranges from 20 million to 30 million bank cubic metres per year to meet tarsand demands for the production of 129,000 barrels of synthetic crude oil per day. The economic tar-sand lies beneath a variable thickness of overburden materials, composed of silts, clays, some sands of lacustrine origin, wind-deposited sand dunes, and out-wash sands and gravels.For the removal of overburden, Syncrude commissioned its own mobile equipment fleet in January 1981. This fleet consists of two Demag 241 hydraulic shovels, ten Titan 33-15B trucks and support equipment. Prior to this, all overburden removal was being carried out by contractors.This paper presents an overview of overburden removal at Syncrude, with particular reference to the performance of its own fleet.IntroductionThe Syncrude Tar Sands Plant was officially opened on September 15, 1978. After an expenditure of approximately $2.26 billion, the second and the largest commercial tarsands plant was on stream toward a permit production rate of 129,400 barrels of synthetic crude oil per day. The Syncrude Plant, a joint venture of six oil companies, the federal government and the Alberta government, is a major step forward toward the goal of Canadian energy self-sufficiency.The Mildred Lake operation of Syncrude Canada Ltd. Is located 40 km north of Fort McMurray and 480 km northeast of Edmonton in the Province o f Alberta.Synthetic crude oil leaving the plant is a blend of two-third s gas oil and one-third naphtha. The two streams combine in a pipeline and flow to Edmonton. The product takes six days to make the journey, arriving at four locations in the city Imperial's Strathcona Refinery, Gulf's Edmonton Refinery, the Interprovincial pipeline terminal and the Trans-Mountain pipeline terminal. Each Syncrude owner receives a share of oil equal; to its percentage of ownership in the project. At the present time, the oil is being utilized by Canadian refineries from Vancouver to Montreal."

"In ordinary manufacture process of tungsten powder, a preferable intermediate product used is ammonium paratungstate (APT). The particle size of tungten powder made from it through W2OO58 is larger than 1. 0 um. In order to obtain ultrafine tungsten powder with narrow size distribution, a new type of tungstate, hydraziniull tungstate, was studied. Its formula is 5(N2H5)2O·12 WO.s , with tetragonal crystal structure of a=5.821 , c=18. 468. Three methods for preparing hydrazinium tungstate (ART) were set up and ART can be produced by current industrial APT process with little modification of operation and without any change of equipment.Under certain PH and operation condition of the solution from which ART was produced, an autoreduction of tungsten occured, which produced a lower valency tungstate with blue color when ART was heated at different temperatures, in N atmosphere, tungsten bronze, tetragonal W0290 and W02.7E could be obtained respectively. They all have the superiorities, in the production of tungsten powder, of superfine size and narrow size distribution [average size of 0.5um or even smaller.The rate of autoreduction of ART is very fast at elevated temperature. The reduction reaction, which gaves tetragonal WO290, could be handled smoothly without explosion. To research their behaviors at autoreduction temperatures and the products of autoreduction will be new advances of tungsten chemistry and may also serve tungsten industry with new processes and materials."

Este artigo apresenta o SALF, um software nacional desenvolvido para simular o processo de laminação a frio de chapas através do método dos elementos finitos. O programa utiliza a formulação implícita/rígido-plástica em suas análises. Simulações retiradas da literatura foram realizadas com o software, sendo os materiais simulados alumínio e aço, com espessuras de 3,0 mm e 1,0 mm, reduções de 5% e 30% e atrito de 0,06 a 0,15. Os resultados do SALF ficaram bem próximos dos resultados descritos na literatura. Desta forma, a partir de agora, as siderúrgicas nacionais têm uma ferramenta nacional para simular o processo de laminação a frio, a qual pode auxiliar na melhoria de seus processos e produtos.

The results of two separate but related studies are given. In the first study, four equations were tested; the object was to determine which would produce a curve that would best fit data points that represent a trend of declining oil production in 90 California fields. Two conventional equations (the Arps and semilog) and two novel equations (extreme-c and double semilog) were tested. The curves were first fitted to the initial 9 years of the 15-year production data and then extrapolated for 6 years to determine how well the extrapolated curve would fit the data points. The generated curves were also extrapolated beyond the last data point to predict rates of future production. The results of the first study showed that no equation was clearly superior to the others in all respects. The semilog equation resulted in the best fit to production data for the first 9 years, but the Arps and extreme-c equations produced a better fit for the extrapolated data for the period of 9 to 15 years. The Arps and extreme-c also gave more realistic production rates when extended to the point where cumulative production equaled reserves. A second study was made to determine if the least-squares technique applied to the Arps equation would result in more accurate extrapolations. The merits of the logarithmic and the nonlogarithmic forms of the Arps hyperbolic equation were also tested. For the logarithmic expression, it was found that one of the constants of the Arps equation reached a value so small or so large that the equation was not applicable to the data of 40 of the 90 California fields. The nonlogarithmic form of the Arps equation was applicable to neither the same 40 fields nor to a few additional ones. When the data and the Arps equation were compatible, the use of the least-squares technique as compared with other methods improved the extrapolation accuracy somewhat.

Fifty years ago when Professor Yazawa began his career, the field of process simulation and modeling was in its infancy. Since then, tremendous progress has been made in our ability to model metal production flowsheets from mine to refined metal. This progress has come about by parallel developments in basic understanding of process chemistry and in computational techniques, This paper will review the progress made in process understanding and modeling in lead, zinc, and copper metallurgy from its inception to the present, and the role of Professor Yazawa's work in furthering this progress. Specific examples will be given for the sintering of lead concentrates, slag fuming, zinc concentrate roasting, flash smelting of copper, and pyro-extraction of zinc. Factors limiting further progress will be described.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the ninth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township map. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

A análise da imagem de padrões de speckle pode ser relacionada com a rugosidade de superfícies metálicas iluminadas com o laser. Com esse estudo pretendemos melhorar a sensibilidade das medidas de rugosidade de superfícies metálicas a partir das imagens de padrões de speckle.

To determine whether preheating coals before carbonization would improve the coking properties of the coals, particularly the weaker coking coals, 3 coals, 1 each from Illinois, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, and a blend of the Illinois with a Pocahontas coal were preheated before testing for coking properties in the Bureau's BM-AGA pilot oven. The effects of preheating on the chemical and physical proper-ties of the coals and on the yields of carbonization products and strength of the coke produced from the preheated coals were determined, as were also the effects of bulk density, gaseous atmosphere, and residence time during preheating. Most benefit from preheating was found with weaker or oxidized coking coals, whereas the more strongly coking coals and blends showed little effect. Direct charging of preheated coal to the coke oven without cooling gave better coke, increased yield of tar, and decreased yield of gas. INTRODUCTION Although 94 percent of today's coal production comes from fields east of the Mississippi, the Eastern States have only about one-third of the Nation's recoverable reserves. West Virginia, which now produces more than any other State, has much smaller reserves than Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming.5/ However, the manufacture of iron and steel in Western States, which has increased greatly since World War I, is handicapped by the scarcity of high-grade coking coals, such as are plentiful in the Appalachian region. Unless a practical method of improving the cokemaking property of local coals is developed, ferrous metallurgical industries in the West must continue to use inferior coking coals and to pay high shipping charges for better coals.

Since the introduction of longwall systems, the prediction of roof behavior and support requirements have become the major issue referring directly to safety as well as productivity. In more recent times, and especially in the USA where longwalls are exclusively equipped with costly hydraulic self- propelled support systems, a decision whether a longwall is applicable in a given condition, and when so, what kind of equipment should be selected, is of primary importance. There are numerous examples where lack of experience, and subsequently wrong selection of supports or winning machines, resulted in considerable losses. It should be emphasized that careful studies of prevailing geological and mining conditions, especially in a new area, are required to assure a successful operation. An evaluation of the conditions can be carried out in different ways utilizing such methods as: - Theoretical approach. applicable when geological conditions comply with the theoretical assumptions. - Empirical relationship which gives satisfactory results where the coefficients could be adequately determined. - Structural geological studies which must be undertaken in all cases, since the frequency of fractures and their orientation have a prevailing influence on roof behavior. - Scale model study on equivalent material for determination of failure conditions in the roof and mechanism of movement (flow) of broken rock matter. Coefficients for empirical formulas can be determined by these types of studies, as can boundary limits for mathematical modeling. - Mathematical modeling, e.g., finite element analysis. - Measurements and observations taken underground during the development period end utilization of experience for previous longwall panels in the area. Usually it is the most practical method where mining and geological conditions are comparable. An application of me or more of the above approaches remains to be a matter of judgement for particular conditions, however, the utilization of a practical experience, when available, is usually the safest way for planning a successful longwall operation.

Durante o processo de desfosforação, as principais fases sólidas formadas na escória são o silicato dicálcico (2CaO.SiO2) e tricálcio (3CaO.SiO2), o fosfato tricálcico (3CaO.P2O5), e o 3CaOSiO2.3CaOP2O5 formado pela oxidação do fósforo em solução sólida com o silicato tricálcio. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a formação destes compostos e avaliar a influência das fases sólidas e líquidas formadas na eficiência da desfosforação. Foram analisadas diferentes composições de escórias industriais com diferentes teores de CaO e FeO. As fases presentes na escória e a sua viscosidade foram determinadas pela termodinâmica computacional utilizando o software FactSage (usando os bancos de dados GTOXID e FTOXID) e os resultados destas análises foram relacionados com a eficiência de desfosforação. A eficiência da desfosforação também foi relacionada com os diferentes modelos de relação de partição do fósforo (Lp) disponíveis na literatura.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of high-purity titanium made by two processes. Sodium-reduced metal with 58 Brinell hardness number (B.h.n.) and electrorefined metal with 60 B.h.n. and 70 B.h.n. were used. Titanium of these hardness levels did not work-harden excessively, and beyond 40 percent cold work the hardening effect was not great. Rapid softening occurred when the metal was annealed at temperature between 300° and 600° C. Full annealing, as determined by property and microstructure studies, was accomplished after 30 minutes at 700° C. A recrystallization diagram is presented which is based on determinations of annealed grain size as a function of rolling reduction and annealing time. For reductions of less than 20 percent, exaggerated grain growth occurred during annealing; for reductions greater than 20 percent, the variation in grain size for each annealing temperature was minor.

"The purpose of the research is intensification of physico-mechanical ore properties determination for ball grinding processes in comminution circuits. The research presents comparative studies aimed at intensification of Bond Ball Mill Work Index (BWi) determination, such as testing technique of Ahmadi and Shahsavari, Berry and Bruse, Gharehgheshlagh, Horst and Bassarear, Kapur, Magdalinovich. The subject of the research is a test procedure of apatite-nepheline, copper-nickel, gold-sulfide and iron ores for the Bond ball mill index. The Bond Ball Mill Work Index for the material firstly was determined by standard Bond test methodology. Two the most promising testing techniques - Ahmadi and Kapur testing techniques - were modified. For the Ahmadi technique it was proposed to pay attention to the circulating load, which should be stabilized on the value of 250% as fast as possible. Two methods were put forward to quicker stabilize the circulating load. For the Kapur technique it was proposed to use empirical coefficients, which is determined especially for the apatite-nepheline, copper-nickel, gold-sulfide and ores. The modified Ahmadi and Kapur techniques require no more than two cycles of ball grinding to determine BWi (while normally 6-8 cycles are required) and less than 5 kg of initial feed. The suggested modified Ahmadi and Kapur techniques allow to intensify the physico-mechanical ore properties determination for ball grinding processes and BWi test costs considerably, which makes them useful for mass sampling and monitoring strength properties of ores entering a concentrating mill. INTRODUCTION When designing concentrating mills, the choice of the technological scheme for ore pretreatment, particularly the type, quantity and size of the main process environment, the determination of optimal grinding conditions and the calculation of equipment load are carried out by preliminary studies of grinding in semi-industrial or laboratory-scale plants. Semi-industrial tests on full-scale plants provide the most reliable information for calculating specific loads for equipment. However, this requires a significant amount of ore samples, a high labor costs and the pilot plants. Thence the most researchers performed grinding tests with small laboratory equipment using small ore samples."
