Classical Mixing Theory is based on applying many fundamental correlations to standard baffled dished bottomed vertical cylindrical vessels with high degrees of symmetry. Horizontal autoclaves operating at elevated temperatures and pressures have been used for more than two decades. All compartments and especially the first and last compartments are asymmetrical. To date no comparison of the effects of the asymmetric geometry on mixing system design and scale-up has been published. The results of investigating solids suspension, mixing time, momentum transfer from the impeller to feed slurry and feed inlet location in the first autoclave compartment are presented as influences on residence time distribution. CFD modeling was developed and verified with the test apparatus.

Current sulfide ore processing methods involving mechanical sizing of ores, froth flotation, electro-winning, solvent extraction, smelting and roasting are quite effective but typically represent a significant energy and environmental cost. This paper is the subject of a recent patent application and development program involving major improvements in sulfide ore processing. This two-step ?looping oxidation? process effectively removes sulfur while producing materials of adequate purity in an energy proficient and environmentally friendly manner. The first step results in a metal sub-oxide and a highly concentrated sulfur oxide off-gas stream. This gas stream can be processed for recovery in a more effective manner regarding both energy and capital equipment costs. In the second step, this metal sub-oxide is further oxidized to efficiently generate energy that can be recovered and utilized without the typical complications of an ?acid gas? stream process. Additionally, a portion of the final fully oxidized product can be looped back to the first step as the oxidizing agent. This process will be described in detail and compared to existing technologies in the area of energy efficiency, and off-gas environment treatment energy requirements.

The time and spatial dependence of component and species concentrations during in situ uraninite leaching have been modeled using a reactive transport model based on partial equilibrium between reactive minerals and the solution. The flow field is represented by mixing cells in series. The effects of the H2O2, (NH4)2CO3, and NH4HCO3 component concentrations have been simulated, and results are presented for a one-dimensional flow field.

"Chloride metallurgy is emerging as an alternative process for the production of base metals. Process Research ORTECH Inc. (PRO) has been at the forefront of technological development of chloride metallurgy. PRO has developed an innovative technology for the production of high purity titanium dioxide, iron oxide and vanadium pentoxide from ilmenite ores and concentrates. PRO is also developing its proprietary mixed chloride technology for the extraction of vanadium from other sources such as oil shales. In this paper, results from the test work conducted at PRO for the extraction of Ti and V using a mixed chloride lixiviant are presented.IntroductionTitanium and vanadium alloys and compounds have numerous industrial applications. Titanium dioxide is used in paints, plastics, rubber, paper, inks, textiles and a number of other miscellaneous applications. Currently nanosize T1O2 is being investigated for application in the cosmetics industry. Inorganic sunscreens mainly use T1O2 or ZnO particles, which reflect and scatter ultra-violet light. T1O2 nanomaterial is also finding application in smart construction materials and coatings, as a photo-catalytic converter. Nano TiO2 can catalyze the dissociation of NOX gases and other automotive emissions, thereby reducing the smog in urban centers. After the construction material is exposed to sunlight or ultra-violet light, the T1O2 is photo-activated and degrades the pollutants.Titanium metal and titanium dioxide are produced from ilmenite (FeTiOs) or rutile (naturally occurring T1O2) ore. Only about 6% of the titanium resources are used to produce titanium metal and the rest is used to produce T1O2. Many of the titanium ore deposits currently have unacceptable levels of transition metals which limits their processing by conventional routes."

"Under the auspices of the Commission of the European Union, a consortium composed of six European organi~ations has conducted a project to scale up the PLACID electrowinning cell to industrial size within the Placid process development. This paper is concerning the results and achievement of the industrial cell prototype after more than 1,000 hours operating time and about 10,000 Kg electrolytic lead production. In general, results have been very satisfactory, demonstrating the ability ofthe PLACID electrowinning cell to produce top quality electrolytic lead (> 99.99 %) with high current efficiency and low energy consumption.IntroductionThis paper is concerning the development of an industrial size PLACID electrowinning cell within the PLACID process development. This project began on January 1993 and was finished on April 1996.Lead metal production and manufacturing industries produce large amounts of dusts and also lead bearing slags. Spent lead-acid battery recycling also produces lead oxides from the battery pastes rather similar to those mentioned above. Those lead secondary materials are hazardous and difficult to handle by usual procedures.Existing processes to treat-lead oxides may inflict considerable damage on the environment, incur high operating costs and have limitations to produce top quality lead.The main aim of this project has been to develop a novel hydrometallurgical process able to deal with different lead bearing materials, mainly lead oxide secondaries: lead-acid battery pastes, lead fumes, furnace slags, oxide residues, etc., producing ""four nines"" pure lead in an efficient manner with a benign influence on the environment; it is called the PLACID process."

All integrated steel plants have hospitals of 650 – 750 bed capacity with modern facilities to serve it's employees and adjoining localities in a clean and sustainable environment.According to the Bio-Medical Waste(Management and Handling) Rules, 1998 and as amended to date, all Bio-Medical waste which is generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human beings or in research activities pertaining thereto or in the production or testing of biologicals are to be categorized and taken to any facility wherein treatment, disposal of this waste or processes incidental to such treatment or disposal is carried out.The hospital management has created adequate treatment facility for Sharp and Infectious Waste, Pathological Waste and Anatomical Waste through Autoclave, Shredding Machine and developing deep burial pits. Some of these hospitals is ISO 9000-14000 certified. Removal of heavy metals from industrial process streams is becoming increasingly important for _the recovery and reuse of values in process tails. Technology has been available for several years which removes heavy metals, from dilute (0.1-3.0 g/L) streams, as hydroxide or hydrated oxide sludges, allowing discharge of washed cakes with up to 60% solids. This paper reports on improvements to this technology which now allows treatment of streams with metal concentrations in excess of 60 g/L while eliminating the need for thickeners. Streams containing copper, iron, aluminum, chromium, nickel, zinc, cobalt and lead have been successfully treated.

Particle liberation studies are commonly used in the determination of the proportion of locked and liberated phases in ground ores at various stages of mineral processing. These studies may range from a qualitative assessment of a polished specimen in an optical microscope to a full quantitative analysis of the liberation characteristics of fine grained complex sulfide ores using scanning electron microscopy and high level image analysis. However, the conversion of quantitative data to meaningful information on a mill operations level is by no means a simple task. This paper reviews the errors inherent in the SEM/Image Analysis technique and looks at the various methods available to minimize errors in data collection.

The eddy current separator (ECS) is designed to separate nonmagnetic (nonferrous) electrically conducting (metallic) particles from nonconductive residue. Nonferrous metallic particles are repelled out of the material stream passing over the eddy current rotor (ECR). The rotor is housed in a fiberglass composite outer shell that serves as a conveyor head pulley. This results in the desired metaVnonmeta1 separation. The behavior of ferromagnetic particles, mainly iron and iron oxide (i.e. rust), is quite different. These particles are strongly attracted to the magnets and the smaller particles tend to align their long axis in the direction of the magnetic flux. Since the direction of the flux changes with the passage of each magnet pole, the small particles spin at very high rates causing wear of the belt and of the composite outer shell housing the ECR. Large particles, when trapped under the ECS belt, cannot spin, but can be heated by the eddy current effects and subsequently can burn through the composite outer shell. We discuss the practical implication of this behavior of iron and rust on the design, performance and maintenance of eddy current separators.

Dredging is a common method of remediating ponds containing contaminated wastes. However, dewatering of the dredged solids is usually not well integrated with the dredging phase. As a result, overall project efficiency can be poor. Specifically, since dredges deliver material in a widely varying slurry form and since dewatering presses require the delivered material to be uniform, union of the two systems often results in inconsistent operation of the overall process. In an effort to enhance overall dredging and dewatering process production rates as well as minimize the return of suspended solids in the decant water, a new process was developed to provide a consistent dredged sludge for delivery to the press. This paper discusses modifications made to a conventional dredging and dewatering process to improve production rates and dewatering capabilities. These modifications are applicable to any project where efficient solids dewatering is required and where returning decant water must be visually free of suspended solids.

Extractive metallurgical processes rate amongst the most complex from the perspective of computational modeling. They typically involve multi-phase and multi-component fluid flow in very complex geometries, heat transfer driven by a number of interacting phenomena, solidliquid- gaseous phase change and mass transfer together with complex thermodynamics and associated chemical reactions. Beyond the model building itself, key challenges have always involved being able to identify the phenomena present together with interactions to characterize processes and experimental laboratory and plant data to parameterize the arising models – it is in this milieu, which require considerable process understanding and subtlety of thought, that David Robertson has made his contributions. We will review the achievements, over the last couple of decades, in computational modeling of extractive metallurgical processes and address some of the remaining challenges to enable simulation based process design, as we move through the 21st century.
