Although Mexico is known for its important base-and precious-metal deposits, and lately oil, some industrial minerals play an important role in the Mexican economy. Sulfur, the most important industrial mineral produced, accounts for approximately 7.5 percent of the total value of mineral production. This commodity is followed by fluorspar, which accounts for 6.4 percent. Predominantly, the fluorspar deposits are very high grade (75 percent CaF) and are contained in lower Cretaceous limestone in the states of Coahuila and San Luis Potosi. Base-metal deposits in the area of Parral (notably San Francisco del Oro), however, have become important fluorite producers in their own right. (San Francisco del Oro has 12 percent fluorite gangue.) Salt from the Guerrero Negro solar-evaporation ponds in Baja California account for 6 percent of the total shares; phosphate from Baja California also accounts for 6 percent. Barite from man to deposits in Lower Cretaceous limestone in Coahuila and exhalative deposits in the Paleozoic section of Sonora account for 1.0 percent. In addition, Mexico is an important producer of gypsum, graphite, and celestite. Although graphite and celestite are not large-scale operations and thus do not contribute much to the Mexican economy, the Mexican graphite and celestite deposits are among the most important in the world; Mexico is one of the world's few sources of celestite. The celestite is in the form of large, high-grade mantos in Cretaceous limestones in northern Mexico.

The paper presents a description of the procedures that were used to generate a ventilation criterion based on measurements of ambient mine air exhaust pollutant gases and ventilation airflow quantities. Today's economics dictate that a ventilation requirement be based on actual operating conditions. This will assure optimum economics and a safe working environment at the same time. The paper presents a methodology by which a ventilation requirement is based on the average maximum expected concentrations of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO2) that equipment operators in one of our Southeast Missouri mines will be subjected to. A graph has been generated whereby the expected maximum levels of NO, NO2, CO and CO2 are plotted against the ventilation quantity of a mine stope.

The crust of the earth, together with its seas and its atmosphere, is the source of all of mankind's primary wealth. Indeed, most people think of precious metals and stones when they think of wealth mined from the earth, but the value of the material and energy goods derived from the earth far exceed the value of the precious metals and gem stones. Thus, it is obvious that all minerals which we mine from the ground represent new wealth--the copper, clay, or petroleum we mine just as much as the gold or silver. More and more, wealth is defined in terms of utility-not in terms of an arbitrarily established monetary value. The recent action of the OPEC nations in controlling the flow of petroleum has clearly demonstrated this to the petroleum-importing nations! There is developing in the United States, as well as in many other nations of the world, a concern for the future availability of many mineral-derived raw materials and of mineral fuels. Ore grades are diminishing, concern for the environment has placed restraints on commercial development of some mineral deposits and the processing facilities necessary to exploit them, and countries upon which we have relied for major mineral materials have become increasingly nationalistic, causing uncertainties in future supply and causing an increasingly alarming deficit in our nation's balance in trade.

The population of the Rhondda underwent a spectacular rise as energy requirements increased in the mid-nineteenth century. The rapid expansion in the demand for coal transformed the population from a few hundred sheep farmers in the eighteenth century, into a thriving coal-based economy of some 168,000 inhabitants in 1924. Cochrane (1958) put forward the idea that the differential migration of more healthy men from the Rhondda Fach during the period since the peak of population in 1924, had resulted in a respiratorily-impaired residual population. This idea was used to explain the reduced survival of miners & ex-miners aged 55-64 years from this valley as compared with a similar group from Leigh in England. Using the proportional hazards regression model of Cox (1972), a comparison is presented of the exact twenty-year mortality of migrant and non-migrant miners & ex-miners and non-miners from the Rhondda Fach. The analysis makes allowance for the pattern of migration throughout the twenty-year period and adjusts for the confounding influence of variables such as age, occupation, and category of Simple Pneumoconiosis. The results indicate that contrary to expectation, any effect of migration upon mortality is manifest only at higher ages. Furthermore, for these men, the migrants have worse survival than the non-migrants. Also, contrary to expectation in the light of work by the British Coal Board (Soutar et al, 1982) there is no evidence of increased mortality amongst men with category I simple pneumoconiosis. INTRODUCTION [The Background] In September 1950, the Medical Research Council's Pneumoconiosis Research Unit at Penarth in South Wales initiated a study of lung disease in the smaller of the two Rhondda Valleys - the Rhondda Fach. At that time, the primary interest was in assessing the possible role of pulmonary tuberculosis in the aetiology of the serious (complicated) form of coal-workers' pneumoconiosis, i.e. Progressive Massive Fibrosis. The Rhondda Fach is situated in South Wales, some 25 km north-west of Cardiff. It is a narrow winding river valley about 12 km long, and approximately 1 km wide. The name means Little Rhondda; there is a corresponding Big Rhondda - the Rhondda Fawr. Together, these valleys make-up most of the Rhondda Municipal Borough. Following the initial survey in 1950-51, there have been several follow-up studies of this population. In addition, amongst numerous other investigations to unravel the aetiology of coal-workers' pneumoconiosis, Medical Research Council teams studied various other (sample) population groups, particularly in the industrial areas of the adjacent Aberdare Valley, and in Staveley and Leigh in England. The agricultural areas of the Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales, and Annandale in Scotland were also studied.

Direct Production Costs for Solar Sa 1t approximate the trucking cost for 160 Km. Operations near markets appear unusually attractive at first look. However, many desert operations have been plagued by dust storms yielding salt too high in insolubles for most uses. This paper relates the history of a successful operation in a dust storm area. Saturated brine from the solution mining of LPG storage caverns is evaporated in solar ponds yielding 99.95% sodium chloride (dry basis). Purchased energy is one-eighth that of vacuum pan operations. Production scale tests have proved it works at another desert location using a more complex brine. A new approach for refining soluble salts at ambient temperatures is demonstrated by bench scale and pilot work. Again, savings in purchased energy exceed 80%, even when temperatures are raised to reduce refining time.

A novel liquid-liquid separation for the recovery of free or liberated gold from mixtures of fine particles was evaluated. Two inexpensive and environmentally benign fluids were selected for the study, water and carbon dioxide. The separation, which is conducted at 295 K and at the vapor pressure of carbon dioxide (6.0 MPa), is based on differences in wettability between the precious metals and other minerals. Contact-angle results indicated that, in the presence of water and liquid CO2, gold is slightly hydrophobic. The addition of CO2-soluble fluoroalkyl thiols or f uoroetherthiols increased the hydrophobicity of gold exposed to water and CO2 to a greater extent than alkylthiols. Minerals, including quartz, pyrite and magnetite, were hydrophilic. During the separation, an aqueous slurry of fine mineral and gold particles was mixed with liquid carbon dioxide. Pure gold particles (-325 mesh) were found to agglomerate at the H2O-CO2 interface. The minerals tended to remain in the aqueous phase. Despite these promising preliminary results, very poor gold recoveries were obtained when applying the procedure to an Australian gravity concentrate. This was attributed to the native gold particles in the concentrate being either too large, agglomerated in slimes or coated with minerals. Although this particular application was unsuccessful, this water-CO2 biphase technique may be applicable for other separations that require the removal of very fine, hydrophobic particles from an aqueous slurry.

The Copper Creek area, part of the Bunker Hill District, Pinal County, Arizona, lies within the southwest porphyry copper province of North America at the intersection of a northwest trend and an east-northeast trend of Laramide porphyry copper deposits. The Copper Creek area has been mined and explored for copper and molybdenum since the early 1900?s. The majority of this work focused on the more than 400 surface exposed breccia bodies. In the 1960 to 1970?s deeper drilling discovered a deep porphyry copper-like setting. Redhawk Copper currently has NI 43-101 compliant resources of about 0.652 billion pounds of measured and indicated and 2.745 billion pounds of inferred copper equivalent in breccia hosted and porphyry style deposits. INTRODUCTION The U. S. mining industry experienced a severe recession in the early 1980's. This resulted in the realization that the domestic mining industry had to compete on a global basis and only the strong or the low-cost producers would survive. The economic viability of a mining company not only depended on maximizing mineral recovery but also on its ability to do so at minimum cost. Companies had to become more productive not only by cutting costs, but also by developing and/or evaluating new technologies in existing or new plants. Several innovative concepts, including in-pit crushing and conveying, fine crushing, improved classification equipment, flotation, column flotation, pressure filtration, etc., have been developed in recent years. This paper addresses the impact of new flotation concepts and equipment on mill design. MILL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Modern mill design, especially for large capacity plants, has its foundation in minimizing capital and operating costs. Capital costs can be minimized by minimizing the various components of the capital cost: infrastructure, equipment, instrumentation, structural, initial spare parts costs, etc. All these costs are minimized by simplifying the mill design and/or process flowsheet. The simplified process flowsheet, where applicable, consists of a single stage primary crusher followed by a semiautogeneous - ball mill grinding circuit to produce feed for a flotation circuit. Multiple flotation circuits have been eliminated in most cases. These concepts minimize the cost and encourage the use of large capacity equipment while maintaining optimum metallurgical recovery. The philosophy of mill modernization/modification is generally driven by the desire to increase the mill capacity within the limits of the existing mill building. This need is facilitated by using large size flotation equipment and eliminating multiple parallel flotation circuits in order to minimize capital and operating costs. Conventional flotation machine development has paralleled this mill design philosophy. FLOTATION CELL DESIGN Since froth flotation has been the most widely used separation process for over half a century, one would expect that it would be possible to design and select flotation machines for specific applications based on scientific principles. But this has not been the case. Best judgment, experience and personal prejudice have played a key role in equipment selection. These factors, along with the difficulty of evaluating new concepts in commercial plants, has slowed progress in implementation and commercialization of innovative ideas and/or equipment. Conventional Flotation There have been no major technological advances in conventional flotation cell design in recent years. A recent flotation cell survey indicates that 'larger flotation cells are still the order of the day.”(1) A comprehensive review of design of flotation machines indicate that they have been mechanically redesigned and are generally simpler and easier to maintain and less expensive to manufacture. (2,3) The approximate chronological development of conventional cells from the 25 cubic foot cells to the 3000 cubic foot cells, which were recently installed at the Copperton concentrator of Utah Copper, is given in Table 1. Larger flotation cells are the obvious choice for new plants or plants looking for expansion because of the following reasons: • They have lower capital cost per unit volume • Installation costs are generally lower because fewer units require less space • Maintenance costs are lower because of fewer mechanisms • Power requirements (HP/ton dry feed) are generally lower • with increased flotation cell size as illustrated in Table 2 [Table 1. Excessive emissions of methane from the coal seams can have a serious adverse effect on both safety and productivity of longwall coal faces. Mechanization of coal faces has increased production possibilities to the extent that normal ventilation systems may not be able to ventilate coal face areas in order to lower methane content in the air to within legal limits. Production increases may therefore be prohibited for this reason, especially in gassy seams. Methane drainage from the coal seam by means of long holes and before production starts can act as a useful remedial action. In this paper a two dimensional mathematical model has been produced. The model that is based on finite elements, simulates a methane drainage system where the resultant risk is linked to the coefficient of diffusion, coal permeability, holes pattern and the duration for which the seam is subject to drainage. It is concluded that methane drainage of this type can assist in achieving production increases in many coals seems, especially where high gas content is a virtue of the seam.

The cost of transportation of industrial minerals is frequently higher than the cost of the product. Where a minc, industrial mineral plant. or customer is served by a single railroad, that single railroad, because of lack of competition, may increase rates and/or provide inadequate service so that the economics of that mine, plant or customer are adversely affected, or so that the level of service precludes satisfactory performance. Transloading of industrial minerals from rail-to-truck or truck-to-rail in order to improve economics and sales of product is not new. However, transloading to reduce freight costs or improve inadequate service caused by a lack of competition in the rail industry, is a relatively new concept brought on by the recent mergers of many of the main line railroads, both in the eastern and western United States. For example, with completion of the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe and the Union Pacific/Southern Pacific mergers, the western United States has only two mainline railroads. The industrial mineral producer, in order to reduce the cost of transportation, or increase the level of service, must evaluate potential transloading opportunities in light of higher prices and reduced service brought on by reduced railroad competition.

The CERAMEC pressure filter is used for the filtration of fine materials whose cake moisture cannot be achieved with vacuum. Development work has been carried out to achieve a well-controlled cake forming and cleaning of the filter media as well as an efficient solids discharge system. Operating costs are low due to low energy input and negligible consumption of pressurized air.

Introduction Maximization of profit consistent with environmental protection is the principal goal of new applications development for any conventional or in-situ mining technique. Efficient evaluation of all the parameters that contribute to mining costs and production hinges on proper design and evaluation of testing programs and data. The program discussed herein utilizes several field and laboratory procedures to estimate ore deposit characteristics and optimize lixiviant compositions. The ore characteristics and lixiviant compositions are then used in a long path leaching test (stream tube test). The stream tube test data are analyzed by mathematical models with computer assistance to predict such well-field rate parameters as target metal production, lixiviant consumption, and restoration. When these predicted rates are combined with market values for target metals, capital expenditures, prices of lixiviant chemicals, and other economic variables such as labor costs, power rates, licensing fees, and others, an assessment of the relative feasibility of various proposed mining plans is possible. The flowsheet in Figure 1 illustrates this process.

Today the world is heavily dependent on petroleum for its energy. In the United States, over 75% of the primary energy used comes from petroleum. Other developed countries are similar. The less developed countries have a lower dependence on petroleum just as the United States did through the early 20th Century. However, these less-developed countries look upon petroleum as one of the primary energy sources for the economic growth required to improve their standard of living. So everyone considers petroleum an essential ingredient in the recipe for the good life. But there is a substantial problem with this recipe, and it is finally getting general recognition. Petroleum is a finite resource, and the world is using it up at a rapid, accelerating rate. Though it won't be exhausted for many decades, the early warnings of ultimate limits have already appeared. The suppliers of the incremental production in the Middle East have threatened to restrict increases in their production rates. And, of course, the short term embargo of four years ago clearly demonstrated the economic impact of reduced access to petroleum as a primary source of energy. World petroleum production will probably peak in. 10 to 15 years and then start declining. When that happens, economics--the allocation of scarce products (also known as the dismal science for obvious reasons)--indicates that the price of petroleum will escalate in real terms. So that's the situation today. We have a serious and growing problem facing us that could substantially alter the quality of our life over the next 25 years. Recognition that the society may face a period of lowered expectations after a long period of upward mobility will be a painful experience, but it is certainly not the moral equivalent of war. And, besides, we have time to take positive actions to avert the most serious consequences. When we consider alternate energy sources, the possibilities are almost endless: coal, oil shale, tar sands, solar, fission, fusion, wind, tides, biomass, etc. Actually, the list is endless because new possibilities are continually being proposed. Of these possibilities, coal uniquely stands out as an attractive substitute for petroleum. Coal can be, and is, burned to generate electricity and provide heat. It can be liquefied to supplement the liquid fuels from petroleum, and it can be gasified for use as synthetic natural gas. Unlike exotic alternate energy such as solar and fusion, coal has successfully been used commercially to produce synthetic fuels. But, the technology does need to be refined and modernized. Thus, coal's role is not to be "America's Ace in the Hole," but to bridge the transition from primary dependence on petroleum for energy to the utopia of renewable sources of energy. But don't be mislead by the prophets--those renewable sources of energy are going to be very, very expensive when they are invented.

Introduction A study was completed that investigated the enrollment in mining engineering programs in 24 universities and colleges. All programs considered in the study award four-year bachelor of science degrees in mining engineering. They also provide all the engineers for the mining industry and a large portion of the geotechnical engineers working on environmental problems, storage of hazardous waste, civic, and Federal government underground projects. The numbers used as the base for the study are those reported by each program to SME-AIME and published yearly (SME, 1986). Data for the study came from the period 1975-1985. Also, since some programs include students in related disciplines and special categories, such as cooperative students, a few inaccuracies were unavoidable. A 23-page document has been prepared that reports on the overall picture of current enrollment, the trends, and discusses the results, perceived effects, and what can, or should, be done. There has been an obvious, and dramatic decrease in total undergraduate enrollment since the late 1970s. In 1978, 3117 students were enrolled. In the 1985 fall semester, enrollment was 1022, less than one-third. There were 485 seniors, 265 juniors, 147 sophomores, and 125 freshmen. The downward trend in total enrollment is likely to continue for at least another two years. Class size The catastrophic drop in enrollment is shared by all programs across the country. It does not discriminate between types of programs, coal or hard rock mining, or location. In general, 1985's enrollment is about 30% of whatever the maximum enrollment was in any program, though this varies from the teens to 50%. The latter percentage occurs only for some programs with special circumstances, particularly new programs not well established in the late 1970s. The beginning of the decline in enrollment has occurred at slightly different times as affected by the demise of each program's local industry. The numbers in each class produced from a specific freshmen year (Fig. 1) are worthy of comment. The dramatic drop in enrollment for all classes after 1982 is clearly demonstrated. The timing coincides with the general downturn in the mining industry, when many employed engineers were laid off and new graduates could not find jobs. Also, significantly fewer students are being attracted to mining programs as freshmen. The number of seniors shown seems inappropriate. Where did so many seniors come from and why are so few graduates produced? There is an increasing trend for students to take four-and-a-half or five years to graduate. Therefore, they are counted twice, once when they are first classed as seniors and again the following year. Some students purposely delay graduation to obtain more summer work experience and take additional courses. They believe that this gives them a better

Mining in Cushenbury Canyon began in 1860 when John Cushenbury left his Holcomb Valley gold prospect and discovered a silver vein in the limestones of the present day Cushenbury Mine. Cushenbury Canyon is located along the western boundary of the Mojave Desert in Southern California and on the north slope of the San Bernardino Mountains. The Holcomb Valley, immediately southeast of Cushenbury Canyon was the most prolific gold producer in Southern California. Gold mining dominated the area until World War II when interest in the Lucerne Valley Limestone deposits was peaked by the construction of the Kaiser Steel Plant in Fontana, California. The steel making process required large amounts of metallurgical grade limestone and Kaiser geologists located claims in most of the limestone deposits. Kaiser Cement constructed a cement plant and limestone mine in Cushenbury Canyon in 1956. Kaiser Cement modernized the facility in 1982 to a four stage preheater-precalciner system. Mitsubishi Cement Corp. purchased the property in April, 1988, and through further system modifications have created the most efficient and modern cement plant in the United States.

The City of Toronto plans to construct a 1,350 mm consolidation sewer along the East Don Roadway (EDR). The project includes installation of approximately 260 meter of 1,350 mm diameter concrete pressure pipe through microtunneling methods. The sewer alignment crosses underneath a busy 5-lane arterial road and then follows the very narrow East Don Roadway road allowance. This paper discusses the significant challenges overcome to design the Don Roadway sewer using slurry microtunneling methods through mixed face conditions below the groundwater table in a congested road allowance. A curved microtunnel was ultimately required to avoid conflicts with existing utilities, condominium tiebacks and a bridge structure.

Spatial and temporal temperature and humidity variations for 5000 years are simulated in an emplacement airway within the conceptual, high-level nuclear waste repository proposed to be built at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. A multi-scale model is configured using MULTIFLUX, a thermohydrologic-ventilation code. The predicted surface temperature of most waste packages during post-closure exceed 140oC, the threshold limit known for likely localized corrosion for Alloy 22 waste package material. Small amounts of infiltration airflow through the mountain in Panel 5 are found to transport liquid water condensate to some of the waste packages emplaced along the peripheral section of the drift due to edge cooling.
