The Amax Gold Guanaco mine is located in the Atacama Desert, approximately 260 km southeast of Antofagasta, Chile. The 6,000 tpd leach operation produces approximately 90,000 oz of gold, and 360,000 oz of silver per year. Production began in 1987, and the operation has been managed by Amax Gold since 1992. The mine has been plagued in the past by high operating costs and low production. Several significant changes have been made to the operations which have resulted in lower costs and higher operating efficiencies. A review of these changes is presented herein.

The US coal industry has been using continuous room-and-pillar mining (CRPM) machines for more than 30 years for longwall development. This equipment has also been used for production mining in areas that are not appropriate for longwall mining. From 1977 to 1987, the portion of annual US production mined by continuous miner (CM) sections grew slightly from 65% to 70%. Over this time, mine operators and manufacturers have made some advances to attain the full production potential of this method. This is evidenced by the fact that average tons per eight hour shift for continuous miners in the US grew from 180 t (200 st) in 1977 to 431 t (475 st) in 1987. The authors (1990) reported that the increase in productivity was due to several factors: • a drop in prices; • a more mature workforce; • union stability and incentive programs; •procedural improvements; and •technological advances. The authors estimated that about one-third of the increased production came from the first three and other unaccounted for factors and one-third each for the last two. Even though improvements were considerable, continuous miner capacity is much higher than 431 t/shift (475 st per shift). For example, the machinery is capable of mining more than 9 t (10 st) per machine for the 6.5 available hours per shift or 3.5 kt (3900 st). However, this has never been attained on development. Demand for titanium minerals and pigments increased during 1994 as the world economy expanded. Global consumption of titanium dioxide (Ti02) pigment grew an estimated 5% during 1994, the highest growth rate since 1989 (Industrial Minerals, April 1995, pp. 47-53). Demand for titanium mineral ores and concentrates (feedstocks) grew at a similar rate. Increased demand for Ti02 pigment was met through higher production levels. Increased demand for mineral feedstocks was met through drawdowns in inventory levels.

When the Trelleborg Divisions of Boliden Allis and MPSI merged, a unique opportunity occurred for two independent mill fabricators to compare various design procedures and the research upon which they were based. This paper documents such a comparison in the structural design area. Several SAG mill analyses are compared using both Boliden Allis and MPSI methods. The differences and similarities are then utilized in a correlation of critical stress definitions and the acceptable design and inspection criteria.

Dewatering is a major operational cost at sane mines. Under certain conditions, costs associated with water disposal may continue beyond the productive life of the mine. For mines with mineralized waters, this is of special concern. Since 1974 experience has been gained from the examination of a number of closed underground metal mines that exhibited drainage problems. It was observed in certain cases, that had appropriate steps been taken prior to closure, that the resulting drainage problems could have been largely avoided. The pre-closure steps would have involved alteration to the "plumbing system" of the mines: i.e., the drifts and crosscuts interconnecting the workings of the mine. This could have best been accomplished by the placement of bulkheads and/or selective drifting. In addition to reconfirming that hindsight is 20-20, a lesson learned from these case studies shows that a relatively simple hydrologic evaluation prior to mine closure may avoid a troublesome and costly drainage problem.

Triboelectrostatic separation tests were performed on a bench-scale, analytical separator using coal, coal combustion fly ash and mineral samples. Fractions of separated samples were collected and analyzed to characterize the performance of the separation. Particle size distribution and morphological characteristics for these samples were analyzed by optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that smaller size fractions of a fly ash sample had better separation than the full sized parent fly ash sample, indicating interference or particle-particle interactions during the separation process. It was also observed experimentally that small kaolin particles attach to the surface of large silica spheres, causing charge neutralization and subsequent low separation efficiency.

Jade is a commercial term encompassing green, white, black or yellow-brown jadeitite and nephrite. Jadeitite consists of Na-rich pyroxene, whereas nephrite consists of prismatic to acicular amphiboles of the tremolite-actinolite series forming bundles that are randomly oriented and interlocked. Nephrite is tougher (harder to break) than jadeitite. Its fracture strength is about 200 MN/m2 whereas that of jadeitite is about 100 MN/m2. On the other hand, jadeitite has a higher hardness (7 compared to 6.5 on the Mohs scale). There are over fifty known nephrite occurrences in British Columbia (B.C.). These occurrences consist of individual blocks, boulder fields, talus blocks and in situ occurrences. Most of the in situ occurrences are lens or cigar shaped. They occur at, or near the contact of ultramafic/mafic rocks (mainly serpentinites) with cherts, and other metasedimentary or igneous felsic rocks of Mississippian to Jurassic oceanic terranes such as Cache Creek and Slide Mountain. These contacts are commonly interpreted as shear/fault related. In general, it is believed that the B.C. nephrite formed by metasomatic exchange between ultramafic and silica-bearing rocks. Impurities in B.C. nephrite are spinel group minerals (chromite, magnetite, picolite), diopside, uvarovite, titanite, chlorite, and talc. Jadeitite is slightly denser than nephrite and good quality material sinks in methyl iodine. There are no known jadeitite occurrences of economic interest in B.C., but there are at least four geographic areas where favorable lithologies, and metamorphic conditions (Pn) required for the formation of jadeitite coincide. These are Bridge River, Pinchi Lake, Dease Lake, and Jennings River. These areas are known to contain small concentrations of jadeite, or are characterized by blueschist or eclogite-grade metamorphic conditions. Rhodonite and pyroxmangite are MnSi03 polymorphs. These minerals are pyroxenoids and are macroscopically and microscopically very similar. For brevity, both are grouped together under the term "rhodonite". Most of the B.C. occurrences are hosted by late Paleozoic chert sequences and are lens shaped and concordant. The common association of rhodonite with iron formations, jasperoids, and/or volcanogenic sulphide deposits in southwestern B.C. permits the delineation of favorable horizons using magnetic or electro-magnetic geophysical methods. Geographic associations between manganese showings and sulphide deposits, and the hydrothermal chemical signature of the rhodonite occurrences from this area, suggest a genetic link between rhodonite and volcanogenic sulphide deposits. The typical rhodonite rocks consist of rhodonite, pyroxmangite, neotocite, black amorphous Mn-oxides, Mn-bearing garnet, ± epidote, ±chlorite, ±rhodochrosite, ± parakutnah-orite, ± Mn-bearing calcite, ± iron oxides and hydroxides. Garnet ± epidote forms yellow patches and layers within the rhodonite. Within some of the rhodonite occurrences, the garnet is altered to chlorite. Rhodonite-bearing rock is commonly cross cut by secondary manganese oxide veins, creating a characteristic web-like texture. In several localities, the contorted bedding planes are readily recognized. Mn-calcite and quartz also crosscut rhodonite. Rhodonite deposits hosted by high grade metamorphic rocks may contain pyroxmangite. Rhodonite is an important gemstone and ornamental stone in B.C., second only to nephrite in dollar value. B.C. nephrite and rhodonite have been used for the past 100 years in local jewelry and ornamental applications. More recently they have been used in table tops, and they have potential as upscale materials in tile-making. There may be a market for tiles made from lower grade materials that were previously extracted and stockpiled. The prices of nephrite, jadeitite, and rhodonite vary widely with quality, but gem and ornamental grade stones are relatively highly priced materials and they trade world-wide.

Concentrations of He, CO2, and O2 in soil gases were measured regularly for more than a year at a site near Golden, Colorado. Samples were collected from a hollow probe at 0.75-m depth and from a plastic hemisphere on the ground surface. Soil temperature, air temperature, percent humidity, And barometric pressure were also measured. Soil moisture was measured only indirectly as amount of rain or snowfall. Higher concentrations of CO2 in both the 0.75-m and surface samples correlated with higher soil and air temperatures, which suggests that CO2 was produced by bacteria. Lower concentrations of helium in both the 0.75-m and surface samples correlated with higher soil and air temperatures. Rain and snowfall appear to affect helium concentrations. Carbon dioxide concentrations were lowest when snow lay on the ground for extended periods of time. No correlation was seen between barometric pressure or percent humidity and concentrations of He, CO2, or O2 at 0.75-m depth or at the ground surface. No correlation, either positive or negative, was seen between concentrations of CO2 and O2.

Booster fans have been in regular use in British coal mines since the first half of this century, but a large increase in their use did not take place until after the Nationalization of coal mines in 1947. From that time the need was identified to improve standards of ventilation in general and mining engineers specializing in ventilation were appointed at all levels in the mining industry. A comprehensive approach to ventilation surveys and planning, together with the realisation of the benefits of booster fans, led to their more rapid introduction. Many coal mines in the U.K. are at moderate depth and have virgin strata temperatures of 30°C or less. The ability to control climatic conditions by increased ventilation rather than resort to cooling systems has led to the introduction of booster fans and recirculation systems in these mines. Large makes of methane and high levels of coal dust production due to increased mechanization have also required enhanced ventilation standards. This paper deals with the reasons for selecting booster fans and the specific safety considerations involved in their use. Numbers, types and sizes of booster fans in the U.K. are outlined, together with notes on installation and performance. Remote monitoring and control from the surface is dealt with, and current legislation. The evolution of controlled recirculation is also covered starting with auxiliary fan systems in 1970 and leading to very large district schemes in the late 1980s. The research at Newcastle upon Tyne University and other establishments in the climatic conditions associated with recirculation is summarised and its use in assisting existing and proposed conventional and recirculation systems is indicated.

"Iron ore in Minnesota probably carries a heavier tax burden than any mineral in any other place in the world. The State Tax Commission, created in 1907, originated the system, and with the assistance of the School of Mines is constantly making such adjustments, changes and increases as appear necessary, in order to place mineral reserves on the assessment rolls at their true and full present taxable value. The ore bodies on the Mesabi are so well defined by drilling and underground devel¬opment that it is possible to estimate very exactly the volume on every forty acres of land taken as a unit. This is done by the operating or holding company and reported annually to the Tax Commission, Who check the estimates, having all data, and- proceed to fix the valuation for taxation purposes.The first step is to ascertain a general average selling price in open market, over a period of years ; then the total cost per ton (exclusive of royalty) to produce and market the ore. The difference between the average selling price and producing cost per ton is taken as the future full value per ton. This is then discounted at a rate of interest that represents the present and possible future worth of money, over a period of years that will be required to exhaust the ore body, giving the present full value per ton., Iron ore is taxed at 50 per cent of its full value, while other property is taxed at 33 1/3 per cent and 25 per cent."

Mr. Chairman, Fellow Keynoters, Ladies, and Gentlemen: It is purposed to consider the theme of this meeting, "The 1970's - Pivotal Decade for the Mineral Industries," from the particular -- some would say peculiar -- point of view of one engaged in mineral engineering education, and this coign of vantage prompts the textbookish subtitle, "Problems and Solutions (?) in Undergraduate Mineral Engineering Education." Three interrelated problems, or problem areas, will be presented and discussed, and where solutions seem to be emerging or seem worthy to be suggested, they will be identified. The three problems are: 1. The goals, and therefore the course requirements, of the undergraduate curricula are in question, 2. The unit costs of undergraduate education appear excessive to those who bear the charges, and 3. The social ambience of the day affects for the worse the work attitudes and the career motivation of both prospective and in-course students. The Need. - Any discussion of these problems must bottom upon recognized national needs for minerals and a technologically sound minerals industry staffed by competent engineers, particularly at the exploration, development, and production levels, Fortunately, these needs have been recognized and to some extent quantified, and they are even now under further intensive study by some of the most competent members of our society and profession. The latter reference is, of course, to the current work of the National Commission on Materials Policy (U.S.A.) under the executive directorship of Dr. James Boyd. Foundry sands used to make molds and cores have been very important to foundrymen since metal casting began hundreds of years ago. They are now used in two basic ways, either in an uncured green state, grain-bonded with clay, or in a set cured state achieved with sand that, mixed with resins or oils, is cured by baking or by chemical reaction. The term sand, as generally used in foundry applications, may best be defined as material composed of granular particles of mineral matter, ranging in size from 0.5 to 2 mm in diameter. The particulate nature of the material may be the result of natural disaggregation or result from crushing and screening of rock or ceramic materials; crushed and screened products are sometimes referred to as "manufactured sand." Based on their origin, the raw materials for foundry sands will vary in grain shape, grain composition, relative surface, grain size, and grain distribution patterns. These properties, in addition to their chemical analyses, sintering point and expansion characteristics play an important part in the choice of sands used as the base molding or core aggregate in metal casting. Sands with different origins may be blended to produce specific compositions and grain size distributions. Early raw material requirements based on silica sand were simple, but as sand/core/mold technology became more sophisticated and binder technology continued to be developed, the physical properties of foundry sands became more critical. Silica sand is composed of quartz, along with, in most cases, small amounts of feldspar, mica, clay, and other common minerals. Although silica sand is still by far the most widely used base material in production of molds and cores used in metal casting, other natural mineral sands have their own unique characteristics and fill an important niche in special applications. As a result, the term sand, as applied to raw materials used in metal casting, has been logically extended to include granular materials composed of a group of minerals other than quartz. With increased use in advanced foundry technology, natural sands composed predominantly of zircon, chromite, staurolite, or aluminum silicate minerals and of granularized chromite or olivine, have become more than just alternate materials and are now commonly classified as sands when the grains are sand-sized. Foundry sand may therefore be considered under two categories: silica sands and non-silica sands.

The Thaumasia Joint-Venture, composed of Bouygues Travaux Publics, Soletanche- Bachy and Bessac, completed the construction of the underground section of line 2 of the Nice tramway, which comprised a 3.2 km twin track tunnel and four underground stations, in a particularly complex urban and geotechnical context. The density of the surface structures, as well as the presence of many historic buildings on its route made the construction of the tunnel even more sensitive, with a settlement threshold of Half an Inch. The joint venture faced a complex subsoil, varying from one extreme to another from highly plastic clay layers to fibrous peat and to cobbles with very high permeability, with artesian ground water, and with unforeseen anthropogenic obstacles in the tunnel section Due to the diversity of the problems encountered and their variability over short distances, the construction of the underground section of the Nice tramway, in its very sensitive urban context, undeniably constituted an unprecedented challenge.

Researchers at the University of Alabama in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Mines have developed adaptive process control systems in which genetic algorithms (GAS) are used to augment fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs). GAS are search algorithms that rapidly locate near-optimum solutions to a wide spectrum of problems by mimicking the search procedures of natural genetics. FLCs are rule based systems that efficiently manipulate a problem environment by modeling the "rule-of-thumb" strategy used in human decision making. GAS and FLCs can be combined to produce powerful, efficient, and robust adaptive control systems. To perform efficiently, such control systems require a control element to manipulate the problem environment, an analysis element to recognize changes in the problem environment, and a learning element to adjust to the changes in the problem environment. I" this paper, the details of an ongoing research effort to develop and implement an adaptive process control system for a column flotation unit are discussed.

Many factors must be considered when designing a heap leach pad. Geotechnical properties of the ore, can and will affect how well an ore leaches, the solution recovery, stability of the heap, and settlement. As a heap is stacked some of these properties will change due to the increased load. In order to properly design a heap these properties should be determined beforehand so that the heap performs as intended.

The objective of the project is to construct and operate a pan-European underground drainage and minewater management research centre, which would be the hub for data gathering and dissemination in real time of new data to users for analysis and interpretation, as well as serving as a model for consistency, for other centres at key water management sites throughout Europe which would feed data in real time through the hub. The data from the centre will be essential for informing River Basin Management Plans arising from the EU Water Framework Directive, which is an important driver for the project. The implementation of this Directive sets out a requirement for all Member States to develop River Basin Management Plans for all water resource systems. The facility would be a major contribution to sustainable water management in Europe.

A simulation procedure has been developed that realistically portrays aggregate growth and disintegration for particular types of floc structures in water and wastewater treatment processes. The procedure requires local dissipation rates and specification of an interaction distance between colliding particles. A principal difficulty encountered in polymer flocculation, however, arises from changes in conformation of adsorbed macromolecules. Therefore, in systems where polymer flocculation occurs by bridging, dynamic changes in the particle size distribution depend upon the interaction of nonlinear. stochastic hydrodynamics with particles whose growth results from a number of concurrent and sequential random processes.

The evolution in the state of the art is also discussed, considering both economic factors and Chile's burgeoning environmentalism.

Nano clay mineral particles such as kaolinite — with primary particles typically smaller than 2 μm in size — can cause significant problems in flotation processes and tailings disposal, including the processing of Florida phosphate rock and Canadian oil sands. In this study, the consolidated state of flocculated kaolinite sediment was examined, and high-resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) was applied to describe the structure of the consolidated sediment. Using this tomographic information, the complex geometry of the channel network structure for the consolidated flocs was established for the first time. With the establishment of the experimental channel network structure, permeabilities were estimated by flow simulation using the Lattice Boltzmann method. Results for kaolinite sediment with and without polymer are compared and discussed. Results for flocculated kaolinite sediment in a gravitational field are also presented and discussed. The results show that as polymer dosage increases, the permeability of flocculated kaolinite sediment increases, and as suspension pH increases, the permeability of flocculated kaolinite sediment decreases.

"A study was conducted on the N125 project in Seattle to investigate the use of apparent density as an assessment tool for the effectiveness of soil conditioning. The formation of an air bubble as well as the plugging of cutterhead and excavation chamber can be a result of improper soil conditioning. Both air bubble formation at the top of the excavation chamber and developing plugging issues can be identified by analyzing the apparent densities in the excavation chamber. In this study, apparent densities less than unity were observed in the upper portion of both northbound and southbound TBMs, suggesting the presence of an air bubble. Apparent densities greater than the in-situ soil density were observed in the lower portion of the excavation chamber. Particularly high values of apparent density were coincident with clogging observed at multiple locations along the alignment. The combination of less than unity upper chamber apparent density and very high apparent density in the lower portion of the chamber are related, and indicate the inability of the TBM to effectively condition and mix the soil in the chamber.INTRODUCTIONProper soil conditioning in EPB tunneling offers many advantages to the quality and productivity of the project. There are few operational parameters that can be used to assess the soil conditioning performance such as advance rate, torque, thrust, chamber pressure signature, etc. One of the other parameters that potentially can be used is the apparent density. The apparent density of the material in the chamber was introduced by Guglielmetti et al. (2003) as the vertical chamber pressure gradient calculated from the physical relation between the horizontally measured chamber pressures and the vertical distance between the pressure sensors. Guglielmetti et al. (2003) introduced apparent density as a measure to ensure the excavation chamber is filled with material. To guarantee face stability the authors suggest to keep the apparent density over a certain limit so the material is able to transfer effective stress to the virgin soil, and thus provide support of the excavation face. They implemented this method at the Metro project in Porto, Portugal.Comparing the vertical gradient of the horizontal chamber pressures to the densities of excavation chamber samples, Bezuijen et al. (2005) discovered that the gradient is not necessarily representative of the muck density. They assumed that the yield stress of the muck as well as the adhesion between the muck and the cutterhead and bulkhead material have an influence on the vertical gradient during mining (Bezuijen et al. 2005, Bezuijen & Talmon 2014)."
