istorical records suggest that the gathering of geologic information in China began more than 2,000 years ago. Modern-day geological work in the nation started in the early part of this century but it progressed rather slowly. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), there were only 800 people engaged in geological work and only 200 trained geologists among them. According to Minerals and Mining in China, many accomplishments were achieved within China's mining industry during the period of years between 1949, the founding of modern China, and 1997. These include: ? The number of types of minerals with verified reserves increased from 18 (pre-Liberation) to 162 (today). ? Mineral deposit localities grew from 5,123 (pre-Liberation) to nearly 200,000 (today). Of these 200,000 localities, more than three-quarters have verified mineral reserves. ? Minerals extraction and processing contribute to 31 % of the total industrial output value of China (today). ? Regional geological maps at a scale of 1:1,000,000 covering the entire country have been completed, while regional geological and hydrogeological maps at a scale of 1:200,000 covering two-thirds of the country have also been finished (today). ? Before 1949, China was regarded as an oil-poor country. Since the 1950s, China has developed an extensive petrochemical industry. It is largely government-owned except for a limited number of joint ventures. The central government maintains active control over China's most productive fields, including the Daqing field in the Songliao Basin of northeastern China and the Shengli and Liaohe fields in the Bohai Basin of northeastern China. ? Employment in the minerals industry engaged in geological exploration increased from 800 (pre-Liberation) to 1 million (early this decade). The new report provides an overview of the current political and economic situation in China and discusses how this affects the minerals industry. China is in transition between a socialist planned economy and a market economy. This makes it difficult for non-Chinese to keep track of developments. Minerals and Mining in China is divided into 14 chapters that contain detailed statistics, including data on the geographical location and extent of known mineral reserves, production rates, local technical personnel, imports and exports. The report reveals which companies are already active in the area by profiling 50 major investment projects in China's metals and minerals industry. According to its author, China possesses one of the world's largest mining industries, ranking among the leading producers of several metallic and nonmetallic resources. The Chinese mining industry is extraordinarily complex. It has evolved into an overwhelmingly large bureaucracy that was, until the 1980s, shrouded from and misunderstood by the international community. To date, more than 160 types of minerals have been discovered in China. But a significant portion of the minerals and energy base remains largely unidentified and evaluated. And despite China's large reserves of mineral resources, with a population of more than 1.2 billion people, the country ranks among the lowest in the world in terms of proven reserves per capita. "In recent years, much has been said and written on Lake Superior ores, giving the impression that the quality of the ore is deteriorating in grade and that the reserve of high grade ore is rapidly being depleted. Average analyses of ore produced in this district since 1902 show that the average quality has been practically uniform since 1910, and now closely approximates the average for the total reserves of merchantable ore.The accompanying tables and charts show the average analyses for the past ten years, weighted according to tonnage: The chart above shows graphically the average natural iron content for the old range, Mesabi, and grand total Lake Superior ore shipments since 1902.During the last ten years the decrease in iron content for shipments from all ranges except the Menominee was only' .05 of 1 per cent, while for the Menominee ores there was an increase of .052 of 1 per cent. These tabulations and the chart prove that the average quality of the total annual production of iron ore from the Lake Superior district is uniform. Mining men of the district know that all of the merchantable ores of every ore body are being mined out cleanly, and therefore the present average iron ore content of total annual shipments from the district may be expected to continue as long as the present merchantable ore reserves last. There is no logical reason to expect a decrease in the average iron content. Furnaces require ore of definite quality, and if this quality of ore cannot be produced from the natural ore bodies, it must be produced by mechanical means—that is, by concentration of low grade ores or iron formation."

The solvent extraction of gold cyanide from alkaline cyanide solutions with monosubstituted guanidines, bis disubstituted guanidines and a tetrasubstituted guanidine was investigated. The guanidine functional group is protonated in alkaline solution and the guanidinium cation is stabilized so that the aurocyanide anion can be extracted even at -pH 12 if an appropriate carrier is used. Typical aprotic carriers including both aliphatic and aromatic solvents limit gold extraction by guanidines to pH 10; whereas the presence of an alcohol extends gold extraction to pH 12. UV spectroscopy suggests that the alcohol facilitates protonation of the guanidines, stabilizes the guanidinium cation, and facilitates gold extraction at high pH.

If it is so simple, where does information technology fit? How does it affect our industry? Is it a strategic tool for our industry? What approach should we be employing to ensure we are utilizing information technology effectively? How is information technology integrated or tied together with other areas in the organization such as process control? What kind of people and skill sets are required to support the whole area of information technology? What effect does information technology and automation have on streamlining and rethinking the way we do business in the 90's. This paper covers how these areas have been addressed within the Noranda Group of Companies. It reviews how information technology has evolved, the approach, and what effect it has had on a diversified natural resources company in the mining and metals, forest products, and oil and gas industries.

Magma Copper Company's San Manuel SX-EW facility has operated since May, 1986. The original facility had a design capacity of 25,000 tons per year of electrowon copper cathode produced by processing pregnant leach solution from an open pit/heap leach operation. In 1988, the plant was expanded to 50,000 tons per year to incorporate processing in-situ leach solutions. This paper focuses primarily on the heap leaching area with regard to exploration, testing, feasibility, permitting, design and construction, and operating practices. Research utilizing surfactant leaching aids to enhance copper recovery is also discussed.

Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic heavy metal, soluble over a wide pH range. Tl levels may exceed discharge limits in mining-influenced water associated with processing gold, lead, cadmium, zinc, and copper ores. In this work, the effect of sodium permanganate (CARUSOL® C liquid permanganate) on Tl removal from mining wastewater was studied. Factors influencing Tl removal, namely permanganate dosage/demand, coagulant and flocculant use, order of chemical addition, and co-existing metal ions were examined. The results show that permanganate addition is very effective at removing Tl to below target limits and can provide a unique solution for improving wastewater quality and optimizing overall treatment costs. In addition, several on-line monitoring techniques were evaluated for process optimization. The Hach DPD Free Chlorine method was optimal, allowing plant operators to rapidly and easily spot check effluent samples for excess permanganate dose.

The paper explores the recovery of indium via electrowinning from sulfate baths, focusing on the impact of different cathodic supports (AISI 316L and nickel) on process parameters such as electrolyte composition, current density, and temperature. The study compares productivity, morphology, and structure of indium deposits on both cathodes, finding that nickel cathodes generally yield better results.

The combination of froth flotation and hydraulic classification can facilitate the production of a high-quality pozzolan that meets or exceeds ASTM specifications. This combination has been rigorously evaluated and results of pilot-scale testing are presented. Pilot-scale testing was conducted on fly ash from two active electric utility storage ponds. The tests demonstrated that a high-quality and consistent pozzolan could be produced using Advanced Pozzolan Technologies' Fast Float™ Process. Along with the pozzolan, the additional production of aggregate for masonry mortar and the production of a low sulfur, medium-Btu fuel were also demonstrated. The Fast Float™ Process incorporates several simple unit processes to ensure pozzolan consistency. Classification controls the particle size distribution, which is critical for achieving early strength;flotation controls the grade with respect to L.O.I.; and dewatering controls the moisture content.

"With regard to the EU funded project ‘Real-Time Mining’ a sensor-based acquisition, collection and transmission of data for the resource extraction process will be developed. The key concept promotes the change in paradigm from a discontinuous to a continuous process monitoring. Especially concerning material characterization, machine performance and underground positioning ‘Real-Time Mining’ will provide sensor solutions as well as the interfaces for integration, management and visualization of the collected data for a permanent updating process of the resource model with the aim of near real-time optimization of decisions. On the basis of ‘Real-Time Mining’-Output a permanent monitoring of costs can be performed as well in both, the installation and the production process of a mine. Due to the collected data in terms of machine performance connected with the underground positioning information added with personnel tracking and mine surveys a comprehensive overview of process performance is available. By evaluating those information in a specific manner costs per unit will arise for monitoring and possibly controlling actions. INTRODUCTION By having a look into the future of mineral extraction projects, a new challenge for the Ore Mining Industry will arise in the short and medium term. Due to the depletion of currently mined mineral reserves in addition to the persistently high demand of mineral raw materials, the extraction of complex reserves will be necessary. By characterizing such deposits as not constantly graded and geometrically varying, the extraction process, especially concerning the requirement of a minimized zero-value material handling, will become economically ineffective by utilizing the traditional mineral resource management methods. Regarding the state-of-the-art mineral resource management process along the mining value chain, an intermitted, discontinuous sequence of actions is applied (Figure 1). Recently data will be collected from drill hole cores. These rock samples are analyzed in a laboratory. Based on those analyses a resource model is created whereby unknown data between drill holes is interpolated. This resource model is the basis for all mine planning actions including the selection of the mining method, extraction sequencing and the prediction of the expected performance. With the start of the production, real conditions (concentrations of elements, hardness, stability, etc.) can be observed and measured. As the production process is running accordingly to the above described mine plan, the verification of the initial assumptions happens at the earliest after processing of the extracted material. Even if deviations between the predicted and the actual performance are now recognized, the execution of corrective actions is not possible anymore."

"The East Side Access Project (ESA) involves the construction of geometrically complex underground structures including a large number of caverns and bifurcations. Initially conceived as dual lined structures with either traditional concrete or shotcrete final linings (SFL), construction economy, advances in concrete placement technology and scheduling among others led to a wide use of what is referred to as freeform or pneumatically applied concrete (PAC) for the construction of tunnel final linings. PAC is a method of applying concrete without using formwork, where a wet mix concrete is pneumatically installed to encase reinforcement to full lining thickness. PAC has been widely adopted at ESA well beyond initial expectations. The paper addresses the design and construction aspects of the PAC method and contrasts it to traditional SFL lining placement. The experience made provides guidance for future PAC and SFL applications. THE EAST SIDE ACCESS PROJECT AND USE OF FREEFORM CONCRETE The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodates New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the New York City Transit (NYCT) Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The construction includes mining and lining of new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. The tunnels run from Queen’s Sunny Side Yard through the existing 63rd St. Tunnel, underneath Manhattan’s Park Avenue until termination at 37th Street. Differing types of tunneling methods and final lining systems are being used depending on the ground conditions, geometry and size of the excavation, site constraints and functional requirements. Mining of the Queens segment of the ESA Project involved soft ground tunneling by pressurized face tunnel boring machines, cut and cover construction, and conventional tunneling. The Manhattan segment of the ESA Project involves mining in hard rock by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header."

MARY KORPI: As has been typical today, our next speaker is filling in for one of his co-workers. Scott Lawson will be discussing "The Role of the Supervisor in Mining Operations" written by Brent Chamberlain of Independence Mining Corporation. Scott has more than 25 years in human resources management in the mining industry. He has worked in surface and underground mining environments in both precious and base metal mines. A graduate of Ohio University, Scott is currently manager of human resources at the Independence Mining Company's Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining operation located in Victor, Colorado. The only direction that I received from Scott was that he has to leave by 11:45 a.m. as he has a tee-off time with his boss at 1:00 p.m. Thank you to Scott for filling in today.

Based on the mechanical essence that large-scale plastic failure zone appears in all or part of surrounding rock in soft rock roadway, the numerical simulation method is used to study the rectangular roadway in layered rock strata. It is clarified necessary conditions must be met for soft rock: firstly, the strength condition is that the maximum confining pressure is greater than the uniaxial compressive strength of rock strata. Secondly, the stress environment condition is that the ratio of maximum confining pressure to minimum confining pressure is greater than 3. Thirdly, the angle condition is that The direction of principal stress action enables the plastic zone of weak rock layers to fully develop. At the same time, the quantitative description method of soft rock is given, and the soft rock roadway is redefined. Soft rock roadway refers to the roadway that meets the strength conditions, stress environment conditions, and rock structure angle conditions under certain surrounding rock conditions and in-situ stress environment conditions. After the excavation of the roadway, a large-scale plastic failure can be formed, that is, a butterfly-shaped plastic zone is formed, and the conventional support cannot be adapted. It is difficult to support in engineering. It provides a theoretical basis and engineering analysis method for the identification of soft rock roadway, and the research results have engineering value Soft rock tunnel engineering in coal mines constitutes a vital aspect of soft rock engineering. This field broadly encompasses rock engi- neering concerning large plastic deformations, e.g., soft rock slope engineering and soft rock tunnel engineering. The intricate geological conditions encountered in soft rock tunnel engineering present a significant challenge to support, which has harmed coal production in China. China leads global raw coal production with the annual output of 4.6 billion tons. Annual tunnel excavation supporting this production spans approximately 11,000 km, with over 10% of these tunnels classified as soft rock formations. Soft rock is commonly associated with soft rock tunnels due to their prevalence in engineering projects. However, reaching a consensus on the definition of soft rock has long been an enduring challenge for scholars and engineers. Numerous definitions have been proposed, includ- ing descriptive, index, and engineering definitions. For instance, the International Society for Rock Mechanics defines soft rock based on its uniaxial compressive strength σ ranging from 0.5 to 25 MPa. China's Engineering Rock Body Standards, established in 1994 (GB 50218-94), take a qualitative and quantitative approach to classifying rocks. Rocks are categorized as hard or soft based on criteria such as hammering sound, fragmentation, water immersion effects, and weath- ering degree. Additionally, the integrity of rock bodies is assessed across five categories intact, relatively intact, soft fractured, fractured, and extremely fractured. This classification considers factors like the number and spacing of structural planes, their combination, and the types of structures. Descriptive and index-based definitions fall under the category of geological soft rocks, providing a comprehensive geological perspective on the surface features or strength characteristics. However, these definitions have limitations in engineering practice, which leads to contradic- tions. For instance, rocks with uniaxial compressive strength less than 25 MPa may not exhibit soft rock characteristics if the tunnel is shal- low with low horizontal stress levels. Conversely, rocks with compressive strength exceeding 25 MPa at sufficient depth and high horizontal stress may exhibit soft rock characteristics. Definitions originating from engineering practice have emerged after realizing the inadequacy of discussing soft rocks without considering engineering. For instance, Dong's loose circle theory defines soft rocks as rocks with a loose circle thickness exceeding 1.5 m, which chal- lenges conventional supports. This intuitive definition, widely accepted by engineering professionals, emphasizes the difficulty in supporting tunnels due to extensive damage. However, various tunnel damage poses a challenge in relying solely on the loose circle thickness of tunnels for determining soft rocks. He introduced the concept of engineering soft rocks, which are defined as rock formations exhibiting significant plastic deformations under applied engineering force. Two fundamental mechanical properties of soft rocks are identified the critical softening load and critical soft- ening depth. United Nations (UN) has been leading an international committee to define the guidelines in reporting resources and reserves. The system proposed by UN is very similar to the guidelines currently in use in Australia known as JORC guidelines (Joint Organisation Reserves Committee). The JORC guidelines show major differences in relation to the Brazilian system current in practice. The important aspects differing JORC from the current Brazilian guidelines for reporting reserves is the required sampling spacing. The JORC system requires the points of observation to be closer spaced than the Brazilian system for any class of resources. All classification systems share some common aspects in terms of defining the classes of resources based on distance separating samples and on the degree of confidence or accuracy associated with the results reported. Despite of being very clear in terms of stating sample distances, all the systems of classification do not provide clear definitions on how confidence limits should be calculated. This paper proposes a geostatistical framework to measure the uncertainty associated with the reported tonnages and grades. Results demonstrate that the error associated with an estimate can be approximated using multiple simulated deposits to define confidence limits. The methodology is illustrated in a large Brazilian coal deposit and proved to be appropriate to address the issue of quantifying the uncertainty necessary to be incorporated in the systems of reserves classification.

In the last decade or so, the importance of effective preventive maintenance controls and practices has taken on a new and accelerated emphasis. Advances in technology and changes in equipment and product designs impose more precise and demanding standards of quality, productivity and customer service at a very rapid pace. Daily, it is becoming more apparent that in order to fulfill current requirements, existing manufacturing practices and associated control programs must also be upgraded and expanded. This is particularly true in the field of maintenance services. As production and quality standards become more demanding, effective equipment maintenance takes on more importance and becomes more difficult to sustain. In modern plants, the failure of a single equipment component can shutdown a complete production line causing interruptions to operating and shipping schedules that result in costly downtime, dissatisfied customers, and reduced profits. These costly experiences can be minimized with an effective maintenance program that provides maximum equipment reliability and minimum downtime and readily adapts to revision and change. Chemical speciation plays a critical role in many areas of gold processing. These include the formation of HCN in plant liquors, interference by copper in the extraction efficiency of gold, the recovery of adsorbed gold, and the behaviour of plant effluents in the environment. Thermodynamic modelling provides a cost-efficient method of rationalizing and even predicting of chemical behaviour. Unfortunately, because thermodynamic data for cyanide complexes are of poor quality and few are known under hydrometallurgical conditions. Such models are currently of limited use. This paper describes recent work on the thermodynamics of cyanide complexes of a range of metal ions. Data will be presented on the stabilities and enthal­pies (heats) and entropies of formation of a variety of metal ion species determined by potentiometry and calorimetry. Particular emphasis will be placed on the Cu(I)/CN- system.

So now you ask, Where are the transcripts? The well-organized co-chairs, Harry and Mary, did their job. Doug Halbe was active in the audience encouraging people to speak up and keeping everything moving along. So where are they? Were the comments so provocative that they could not be written? Was the profanity so bad (even for miners!) that it couldn't be repeated? It appears that at the first session of the Plant Operators' Symposium a glitch occurred with the recording equipment. Thanks go to everyone who did comment during the dis- cussion period. The People I session had a lot of lively conversation and we are sorry that it will not be printed. However, there is now another reason to hold the plant operators' sessions on a regular basis! Another People session can and will be held in the future.

Sulphate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) are hetero-trophic anaerobic micro-organisms that can be used to remove sulphates and heavy metals from Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), heavy metal-bearing streams with high iron and sulphate contents and low pH, generated by sulphur bio-oxidation in abandoned mine districts. After the preliminary chemical precipitation of iron with carbonate stones (I step, chemical precipitation) SRB can be used to reduce sulphates to sulphurs then favouring heavy metal removal as sulphur precipitates (II step, biologically mediated precipitation). In this work the experimental results of heavy metal and sulphate removal from column tests were reported. Sulphate and heavy metal abatement in fixed bed column was performed using chemically pre-treated samples of synthetic AMD. Attenuation of toxic effects of treated samples was also ascertained by toxicological tests of germination and radical growth with Lepidium sativum.

Progressive Design-Build is becoming a more common delivery method in the tunneling industry. This approach allows the Owner to select a design-builder primarily based on qualification instead of lowest price. The delivery method promotes flexibility and collaboration at all levels from the initial design stage through construction. Using the example of the Atlanta Airport Plane Train Tunnel West Extension, value-added risk management was added during the initial design phase with an independent reviewer. This paper presents the independent reviewer transitioning from constructability review in the very early stages of design to independent design verification to on-site supervision during construction.

"The seventh annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held last February at the SME Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ. A total of 21 students entered the poster competition. The students were required to submit one-page abstracts, which were reviewed by the judges, after which they prepared posters to display their work. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the student explained his/her research in five minutes.The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the competition. Recognizing the effort required to participate, the MPD provided monetary rewards to all participants. First place received $1,000; second, $500; and third through seventh, $200. All remaining entrants received $100 each. The winners have their abstracts published in this issue of Mining & Metallurgical Processing. As in past years, there were separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates.Now for the winners:Graduate winnersJoseph Halt won first place for research on the use of additives to starch binders to create iron ore pellets. Vivek Agarwal received second for working on using solvent extraction to concentrate lanthanum. Jordan Rutledge placed third for utilizing tannins to depress calcite in fluorite flotation. Fourth through seventh places were Vu Truong, Jacob McDonald, Hunter Sceats and Doug Schriner.Undergraduate winnersLaura Nugent won first place for using high-frame-rate cameras to follow bubbles as they moved from the pulp to the froth in flotation cells. Taylor Graham earned a second-place finish by researching how to acid leach low-grade manganese carbonate.Although its cliché to say everyone’s a winner, everyone can benefit from attending the MPD Student Poster contest. All the students were able to display their work to potential future employers, and industry professionals could talk to the up-and-coming engineers. Pellets are the preferred ironbearing feed for blast furnace ironmaking. Starch has been proposed as a binder because it has good adhesive properties, does not contaminate pellets and is relatively cheap. However, starch binders typically lead to weak pellets with rough surfaces, and these can cause high levels of dust within process equipment and when pellets are handled and shipped (Halt and Kawatra, 2014). Our research shows that by adding a small quantity of other additives, pellets made with starch binders become smooth and strong. The newly designed binder leads to significantly lower levels of fines when pellets are handled."

"The Montreal Metro Blue Line Extension Project is part of a metropolitan Program that was launched in 2009 by the Transportation Ministry of Quebec to add additional extensions to existing metro lines in the cities of Montreal, Longueil and Laval with the intention to meet current demand and future growth within the Montreal agglomeration. Specifically the Blue Line Extension Project will add five underground stations to the East of the Montreal. The paper addresses the preparation and the implementation of a three-step geotechnical and geo-environmental investigation program and preliminary design considerations such as the selection of a preferred horizontal and vertical alignment, the selection of construction methods based on previous local experience and current industry trends, as well as preliminary sizing of underground infrastructures. PROJECT BACKGROUND An agreement between the three mayors of the Montreal Metropolitan City agglomeration, namely, Montreal, Longueil and Laval prompted the Government of the Province of Quebec to create a project office to oversee the studies of extending the existing metro network. The last extension of the existing metro network was completed in 2008 with the Laval extension, which consisted of adding three stations from the existing Orange line. The current extension Program consists of three different extensions, namely extending the Orange Line to Laval and finishing the loop, extending the Blue Line to the East of Montreal by adding five stations, and adding five stations on the Southshore of the St-Lawrence River for the Yellow Line extension. The extension program also requires the construction of an underground storage and maintenance garage located to the north-west of the existing Cote-Vertu station on the Orange line.
