Gem-quality red beryl in the Wah Wah Mountains of southwestern Utah formed as a post-magmatic mineral in a topaz rhyolite flow. Unlike topaz, this beryl occurs along fractures in devitrified rhyolite, rather than in lithophysal vugs. The flow occupies a graben and perhaps a significant paleo-drainage. Beryl occurs at medial depths within the eroded flow, about 170 m below overlying mafic lava flows. Both beryl-bearing fractures and the host rhyolite show an unusual amount of argillic alteration compared with other topaz rhyolite flows. Alteration may be related to the incursion of surface water along shrinkage fractures within the flow. Whole-rock concentrations of CaO within the host rhyolite are very low (<0.01 % to 0.18%) compared with other topaz rhyolites and Be concentrations (about 20 ppm) are about average. Low Ca activities prevented fluorite precipitation and allowed Be transport as fluoride complexes. Beryl probably grew at subsolidus temperatures (-300-650°C), but above the temperature of kaolin development (200-300°C) as fluoride-rich vapors, released by devitrification, encountered fractures and mixed with vapors derived from surface water flowing through the fractures. Beryllium fluoride complexes reacted with water vapor, silica minerals, alkali feldspar, water, and Fe-Mn oxides along fractures to produce red beryl. Continued reaction of the cooling flow with surface water at lower temperatures probably produced a boiling, more acidic fluid that produced the argillic alteration. Consequently, eruption of low-Ca topaz rhyolite followed by entrance of surface water into medial portions of a devitrifying and still hot lava flow appear to be critical factors that led to red beryl formation.

Introduction Screening is defined as a mechanical process which separates particles on the basis of their size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. The key element in this method of particle sizing is obviously the screening surface, the medium that contains the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. Panel caving is an underground bulk mining method that uses gravitational force to mine massive, steeply dipping and deep-seated ore deposits at lower operating cost. To control dust and gas emissions entering the production level during the extraction of ore from the draw points in a panel cave, relatively negative pressure is created in the cave by installing an exhaust fan in the exhaust drift located on top of the cave. As caving is a dynamic process, designing an effective ventilation system is challenging; therefore, estimating the airflow resistance offered by the broken rock inside the cave is critical. This study investigates the effect of changes in the bulk porosity of the broken rock on the cave airflow resistance using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The results show an inverse relationship between the cave airflow resistance and the bulk cave porosity. The pressure-quantity characteristic curves presented in this paper provide valuable information for sizing and operating an exhaust fan used for a mature panel cave ventilation.

The limitations in mechanism research of mineral comminution in the past and the basic features of the comminution process have been analyzed. Two kinds of catastrophe model, i.e., cusp model and swallowtail one in the mineral comminution have been put forward. The dissipative structure of the mineral comminution: entropy production rate, extra entropy, extra entropy production and system stability has been discussed. The physical nature of the behavior that an old structure was destroyed and a new one was produced in the mineral comminution process has been brought to light.

The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation was to characterize overburden response due to longwall mining. Subsurface strata and surface deformations were monitored during the mining of two adjacent, 900 ft wide longwall panels in southeastern Ohio. The panels were separated by a five entry, four pillar system (about 350 ft wide). The overburden thickness in the study area ranged from 214 to 280 ft, and the extraction thickness averaged 70 in. To delineate the geology of the overburden, six coreholes were drilled along a profile line extending across the two longwall panels. Multi-point borehole extensometers (MPBX) with eight-anchors were installed in six boreholes to measure subsurface displacements. The MPBX units were continuously monitored using a data logger. During the mining of the first panel, displacement occurred in a radiating pattern beginning just above the extracted area in the center of the panel and extending upward and outward towards the surface and margins of the panel. Overburden deformation did not project over the gate road entries. During the mining of the second panel, the MPBX&apos;s showed almost simultaneous displacement, indicating that the overburden began to move as a whole unit. Again, overburden deformation was confined to the immediate panel area. At both panels, overburden movement began when the longwall face was approximately 55 ft beyond the line of MPBX boreholes. Moreover, all ground movement was complete when the longwall face was approximately 200 ft beyond the line of MPBX boreholes. This paper discusses the results of the study and identifies the characteristics of overburden deformation.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION Sample collection, preparation and analysis are all steps in a single process designed to provide information about a much larger amount of material than the sample itself. For example, information about the ash content of a unit train load of coal may be derived from a single, relatively small sample of perhaps a few hundred pounds (liters) extracted from the entire shipment. These three steps can be thought of as links in a chain, allowing the simple analogy that the strength of the chain, or, in other words, the value of the information is only as strong as the weakest link. Sample collection, discussed in Part 1 of this chapter, is critical because analytical procedures can do no more than reveal the characteristics of the sample presented to the laboratory. If that sample does not properly represent the population to be characterized, neither will the analysis of that sample. Sample preparation is also a critical part of the chain. Any change in the nature of a sample between the time it is collected and the time it is analyzed will appear to reflect the nature of the population. For example, sample preparation procedures that allow air to partially dry the coal sample before reaching the laboratory will cause the sample analysis to indicate a lower moisture content than the sample originally had. Other changes can be more subtle. Second only to moisture loss, oxidation reactions generally cause the greatest problems. Oxidation of a coal sample can alter surface properties, changing flotation response. In extreme cases, combustion parameters, such as caking or agglomerating properties or mineral composition, such as pyrite content, can change. Water samples can also be altered by oxidation. For example, ferrous iron can oxidize to ferric iron, possibly changing water quality parameters such as pH. Sample analysis, the subject of Part 2 of this chapter, is the final link in the chain. Obviously, no laboratory procedure can correct for problems created by improper sample collection and preparation. At the same time, poor analytical techniques will create incorrect information about the total amount of coal from which the sample was extracted (the population) in the same manner as improper sample collection and preparation. The key to gaining correct information about the population is to view these three steps as parts of a single process. Following proper techniques through only one or two steps of the process will not produce accurate information.

Safety and health are fundamental values at Barrick Goldstrike. An effective safety and health program protects employees, controls costs and increases productivity. Barrick Goldstrike believes that all occupational injuries and illnesses can be prevented and that safety must be the responsibility of every employee on the property. Safety and health must be thoroughly integrated with the company&apos;s efforts to maximize production at the lowest reasonable cost. The goals of safety and production are not mutually exclusive. They must work together to achieve safe production. Barrick Goldstrike began to mine the Betze deposit in 1987. From 1987 to 1992, Barrick employed a traditional safety system using safety specialists on each crew. These specialists were responsible for ensuring that the work areas were safe and that employees were properly protected and trained in safe work procedures. As the work force increased, it became apparent that this system was not the most effective method of ensuring safe production. In 1992, Barrick Goldstrike implemented a loss control program. It was modeled after the International Loss Control Institutes&apos;s (ILCI) International Mine Safety Rating System. This program was based on the philosophy that safety is a management responsibility. It can be managed in the same manner that production and cost issues are managed. Under the loss control system, safety needs are identified and evaluated. Programs with performance standards are developed and implemented and the activities and results are regularly monitored. Between 1992 and 1996, Barrick Goldstrike worked at developing and improving its safety management systems. These efforts had a positive return. The incident rates began to decline as these improved systems were implemented. Studies were undertaken in early 1996 to evaluate the effectiveness of the safety and loss control programs in reducing accidents. The studies showed a strong correlation between the implementation of the loss control programs and the resulting reduction in all accidents. Studies in the process division revealed that Barrick had experienced reductions in personal injury accidents from the projected number that could have been expected had no changes been instituted. These reductions ranged from 39% in 1993 to 59% in 1995. These reductions from the projected rates held true for all types of accidents; personal injury, property damage and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reportable.

During the 1980s and 1990s, twenty deep shafts were constructed in Milwaukee to depths from 85 to 91 m (280 to 300 feet) through soil and weak rock thicknesses ranging from 37 to 69 m (122 to 227 ft). Adjacent compressible soils, settlement sensitive structures and high groundwater levels required that shafts be constructed without dewatering. Contractors attempted several methods of ground support and groundwater cutoff. Significant problems developed during construction of 11 of the 20shafts. One shaft collapsed; groundwater blow-ins occurred at five of the shafts; and seepage caused unfrozen windows at three of the freezewalls. Ultimately, combinations of grouting and ground freezing were utilized to complete all of the shafts into bedrock. This paper discusses the main design and construction challenges experienced and the lessons learned.

Dunn has written an excellent paper providing a wealth of advice on what is often the most costly consumable in the mineral processing plant. As he pointed out, grinding media selection and quality control can play a major role in successful plant operation. Owing to the economic importance of this topic, there are some important factors related to media sizing that I believe merit further comment. Dunn made reference to a slightly simplified version of the Azzaroni (1981) equation and pointed out its successful use for the Henderson SAG and Climax ball mills.

In 1973 housing and construction conflicts threatened Front Range gravel resources. The legislature addressed the problem by passing HB 1529, which required the Colorado Geological Survey to map the deposits and forbid local governments to change lands over commercial mineral deposits from zones allowing mineral development to zoning which conflicted with development. It charged counties to develop Master Plans for Extraction. Plans must consider resource quality, multiple-sequential-use potential, surrounding area compatibility, neighbors, quality of Life, extraction maximization and reclamation potential. Imprecisely worded statutes, budgetary constraints, lack of enforcement and political pressures have limited benefits from the law.

Geologists, employed by the Australian Company, Metals Exploration Limited, discovered nickel laterite enrichment at Greenvale in 1967. A joint venture was arranged with the Freeport Minerals Company who had gained early experience with nickel laterite ores when building and operating the Nicaro and Moa Bay Treatment Plants in Cuba. A 5 tonne/day Pilot Plant at the Freeport research facilities at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, verified the amenability of the ore to treatment by the reduction and ammonia-ammonium carbonate leaching process used at Nicaro. A 5 800 tonne/day Treatment Plant was constructed on the coast at Yabulu, North Queensland. This paper describes the ore body, the mining operation and the stages of treatment required to produce nickel oxide products and a mixed nickel/cobalt sulphide product at Yabulu.

Fullers earth has been mined since about 1920 in southwest Georgia and the adjoining area of Florida. In 1935, the mineral was named "attapulgite" after the source of a sample near the town of Attapulgus, Decatur County, Georgia. Mining and processing of the clay was described in a 1930 publication1 at a time when petroleum refiners were the major users. In the years since then, the uses and users of attapulgite have multiplied, and both mining methods and processing methods have been changed to optimize the clay for the new uses. A comprehensive review of the properties and applications of attapulgite 2 has been published. Only a brief review will be given here to explain the properties being sought and to show how these properties are optimized by mining and processing practices.

INTRODUCTION Las Vegas has recently been termed the “Construction Capital of the Country”. It has also been acknowledged as the fastest growing city in the country for several years running. The rapid growth improves the economic picture of the region but it also imparts unusual demands on the area’s infrastructure. In 1994 the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA)was working on a master plan to address the rapid growth. A long range analysis revealed the need for additional water treatment capacity and delivery systems. Short term projections showed that the current system would reach capacity in the summer of 1997 with the possibility of demand exceeding the supply. The River Mountains Tunnel #2 is part of a $150M scheme to quickly upgrade the system to meet the short term demand, improve the overall system operation and allow for a smooth transition into the larger additions being planned for the future. The SNWA selected Carollo/Black & Veatch (CBV) to provide detailed design and construction management for the upgrades. The River Mountains Contracts consisted of five separate contracts broken out separately to stream line a very aggressive (just 34 months) design and construction schedule. Necessary work included four miles of excavated and lined tunnel, connections from existing pipelines to and from the new tunnel including large diameter (to 3.66m(144 in)) valves, a 18 927cu m (5 million gal) regulating reservoir, a surge tank and a 170 343cu m (45 million gal) reservoir to add additional storage to the system. Notice to Proceed was given to Kajima Engineering and Construction (Kajima) on May22, 1995 for the construction of the River Mountains Tunnel #2. The design called for a tunnel to be driven 6070m (19 915ft) in rock and lined to a finished diameter of 3.71m (12.17ft).Excavation began on December 14, 1995 and holed through on April 30, 1996. Lining began on June 25, 1996 and a notice of Substantial Completion was issued on December 13,1996. This paper describes the measures taken to complete the tunnel in 18 months from Notice to Proceed to Substantial Completion. THE RIVER MOUNTAINS SITE The River Mountains are a low range of rugged mountains separating the Las Vegas Valley from its main supply of water, the Colorado River at Lake Mead. The price records of 7 representative mineral commodities for the 68-year period 1890 through 1957 have been compiled and analyzed for significant trends. When reduced to real prices in terms of dollars of constant purchasing power or to the purchasing power of industrial wages at average rates, a substantial overall fall in prices is revealed. This downtrend contradicts the widely held concept that, heavy drafts on a mineral resource must lead to scarcity, reflected in rising prices. Three metals (aluminum, copper, and pig iron), two fuels (bituminous coal and petroleum)&apos;, and two nonmetals (sulfur and cement) have been chosen because of their preeminence in their respective categories, their significance in an industrial economy, and the ready availability of their price records. It might be added that these seven commodities. were selected before any price figures were compiled, none was selected or rejected to substantiate any preconceived notions as to price trends, The overall importance of the seven is demonstrated by the fact that, taken together, they composed over three-fourths of the value of all minerals produced in the United States in 1957. The first step in the analysis was to reduce the price records to a basis for significant comparisons, Two such comparisons have been made: (1) The quantities of each of the commodities that could have been purchased for an average hour&apos;s wage in each year; and (2) the unit price of each commodity through hhe years in terms of deflated dollars. These data are set forth in the accompanying table and two charts.

New methods and techniques in the field of hydrogeology are being developed constantly. One of these advances has been brought about through the use of inexpensive microcomputers. The formulas used in this paper and developed by Theis, Jacob, Glover, Keck, and Dupuit are not new. The methods by which these formulas can be solved are now available to all who wish to get faster, less expensive, and more reliable answers. Both bolt profile shape and spacing (rib spacing) have been found to influence the bonding capacity of the grouted rock bolt. The bolt surface profile configuration has greater importance to rock bolting in strata reinforcement in mining than the steel rebar used in civil engineering construction. This is because a rock bolt in mining usually is subjected to greater dynamic loading than the steel rebar in civil engineering construction. The increased bonding capacity of a bolt is important when supported ground is either heavily fractured, faulted or the supported ground is of soft formation, typically that of coal measure rocks. Past laboratory studies have identified the bolt profile spacing as of significant relevance to bolt resin rock bonding increase, however, no attempt has been made to determine the optimum spacing between the bolt profiles spacing. Accordingly, a series of laboratory tests were carried out on 22 mm core diameter bolts, commonly used in Australian mines, installed in cylindrical steel sleeve. The study was carried out using both push and pull testing methods. The push test was carried out in 150 mm long sleeves while the pull testing was conducted in 115 mm long sleeves. Profile spacing tested include, 12.5, 25.0, 37.5, and 50 mm lengths. Additional studies undertaken include modelling the profile of the load-displacement data of pull testing. Bolts with a profile spacing of 37.5 mm were found to provide optimum load bearing capacity as compared to other tested profile spacings.

Asbestos analysis is conceptually simple. The objective, in most environmental analyses, is to determine the number of asbestos fibers per unit area or volume in a sample. The sample may be a consumer product, an ambient air sample, or a water sample. This determination is complicated by several factors: (1) sample collection and preparation, (2) counting techniques, and (3) operational definitions of asbestos in use. Three different definitions have been used in the study of environmental samples and are summarized in Table 1. The analytical procedure and detail required in the analysis vary with the definition of asbestos. Accordingly, this may be the only type of environmental analysis where the definition of a substance dictates the choice of analytical methods, and the rigor demanded of the analysis. Lead, arsenic, or beryllium are sub- stances having a constant definition and the method of analysis chosen depends on the concentration and precision required. However, the meaning of the term asbestos fiber is dependent on the eye of the beholder. Macroscopically, asbestos has certain physical properties that make it highly useful. Rockforming minerals do not display similar characteristics. Now, the question arises as to how three definitions of asbestos came into being. This is a result of two factors: (1) the definition of asbestos on any scale intrinsically involves the morphology or shape of the material, and (2) the advent of the transmission electron microscope permits detection of asbestos fibers and other mineral fragments in a size range where the physical properties of asbestos such as tensile strength, flexibility, or thermal resistance are difficult, if not impossible, to measure. There is a good deal of controversy about which definition is most appropriate for regulatory purposes because of a lack of appropriate health effects data (Cooper, 1978). Most differences of opinion center on the questions surrounding the following: 11 Morphology-Is a 3:l aspect ratio an appropriate medical or physical lower limit for the definition of an asbestos fiber? 2) Length-Are asbestos fibers shorter than some arbitrary length (5 pm) as hazardous as longer fibers? 3) Mineralogy-Is the mineralogical distinction between asbestos and nonasbestos minerals medically significant? While these questions are directly resolvable only with the biological and health effects data, ultimately such data reflects the ability of analytical procedures to fully characterize the materials used in health effects studies on animal models, and to monitor the exposure to particulates with different physical attributes in the workplace or community (Cooper, 1978). The following sections outline the analytical problems involved in distinguishing the asbestos and nonasbestos varieties of the same mineral; the analytical procedures available for identifying asbestos and measuring its concentration in environmental samples; the ability of these methods to distinguish asbestos fibers from nonasbestos particles; and their precision and reproducibility. Finally, we suggest some future directions in terms of definition and procedure that would greatly improve the quality of such analyses. ASBESTOS VS. Crystalline Flake Graphite is a strategic mineral. Since 1954 nearly all North American consumption has been imported from offshore. The Bouthillier Project in Quebec, Canada, is Orrwell Energy&apos;s bid to enter the market. Milling of flake graphite is considered easy, yet more problems have been encountered in flowsheet and plant design than in most other minerals. A fresh approach to existing technology was taken, giving results that are highly satisfactory. The key to graphite liberation without flake deterioration is found to be in autogenous grinding. In addition to producing marketable coarse graphite by such autogenous grinding, flotation and tabling, super purity fines can be produced using repeated regrinding, elutriation and flotation. This paper discusses the design of a 500 TPD plant based upon the results obtained from bench and pilot plant studies.

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The 23rd Annual National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum Banquet will begin with an open house and reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The four inductees are: William Wheeler Coleman who served 46 years, from 1911 to 1957, as president and chairman of the company that is now Bucyrus International of South Milwaukee, WI, a world leader in the manufacture of surface and underground mining equipment. Dr. Allen Van Heyl, Jr., an economic geologist who served with the U.S. Geological Survey for nearly 50 years beginning in 1943. He studied more of the nation?s mineral deposits than most could begin to imagine. Arthur Lakes contributed enormously to the geological and mining sciences in the western United States as a geologist, teacher, writer and artist over a period of more than four decades beginning in 1869. The Arthur Lakes Library at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO, is named for him. Samuel Calvin McLanahan, through his inventive genius, changed the direction of his family?s company from that of a foundry to a leading manufacturer of minerals processing equipment to become today?s McLanahan

Introduction In modern society, vanadium is defined as a strategic metal. Some 90% of the global consumption is used as an alloying agent for carbon steels, tool steels, and high-strength low-alloy steels (particularly for pipelines). Advanced titanium-aluminum-vanadium alloys are seeing application in the aerospace industry. Small but ever growing amounts are finding application as catalysts or in electronics. New uses are continually being discovered for this metal. One example of a new application is the vanadium-redox battery for use in generation plants and back-up power sources. Vanadium is found in a large number of minerals, of which the most important are carnotite, roscoelite, vanadinite, mottramite, and patronite. Just over a third of the world&apos;s vanadium is produced as a primary product; the balance is a by-product of the iron and steel, oil refining, power generation and uranium enrichment industries. Vanadium can also be sourced by recycling spent catalysts from the petrochemical industry and ash produced by the combustion of oil emulsion in power stations. However, recycling activities are believed to account for only a small amount of total world supply. Vanadium is recovered from these ores largely as the pentoxide (V2O5) [1]. The major sources of vanadium-bearing magnetite ores are scattered throughout Australia, China, Russia, and South Africa. Current estimates of world’s Proven & Probable vanadium reserves are of the order of 41.3 million tones [2, 3]. Commercial vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite deposits can be found in Kachkanar, Russia; Pan Zhihua, China; Bushveld, South Africa; and Windimurra, Western Australia [4]. Other deposits have been found in New Zealand, Canada, and India, among other countries. Vanadium consumption in the steel sector has increased some 7% per ton of steel over the last 10 years as new alloying applications have been found to improve steel&apos;s strength-to-weight ratio. Future demand from the aerospace and nuclear industries for non-ferrous vanadium alloys such as titanium and super-alloys is also likely to grow. Vanadium is usually added in the form of ferrovanadium, a vanadium-iron alloy. Vanadium compounds, especially the pentoxide form, are used in the ceramics, glass, and dye industries, and are also important as catalysts in the chemical industry. While established approaches may be used at an industrial scale to treat vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores in several countries, new alternatives are being developed worldwide. This review will give short overview of the treatment of vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite ores, an overview of direct reduction and direct smelting processes and an approach to determine technical alternatives for the property.
