INTRODUCTION The Uranium Epidemiology Study at the University of New Mexico was initiated in 1977 with the objective of assessing health effects of uranium mining in the Grants, New Mexico, area. The planned approach was a cohort study of mortality that would capitalize on the availability of health records at the Grants Clinic. During the first year, emphasis was placed on determining the feasibility of the proposed study: Were adequate records available? What was the quality of available information? Could a cohort be established? The first year's work confirmed the study's feasibility (Buechley, 1979). Subsequent efforts have focused on the health and exposure data base and comprehensive follow-up. A retrospective cohort study of early miners is in progress; a prospective cohort study of miners who began working under the current Federal standard is planned. This report will summarize the current status of the Uranium Epidemiology Study. A chronology of the study's activities follows (Table 1). TABLE 1. Checked company personnel records to establish who had worked underground 1 year or more through 12/76. 7/78- Obtained physical exam and mining history information on qualified miners from Grants Clinic and companies. 9/78- Obtained working level month information from companies and other sources. 12/78- Checked qualified miners list with New Mexico death tapes and New Mexico Tumor Registry files. 9/80- Submitted qualified miners list to Social Security Administration for search of its records. 12/80- Obtained copies or abstracts of early State Health Department and Mine Inspector's reports. 3/81-4/81 Conducted Pilot Respiratory Disease Survey. 3/81- Verified underground status of qualified miners via company personnel records. 3/81- Verified smoking and mining histories of qualified miners via Grants Clinic records. 3/81- Began establishing cohort with first underground experience after 1970. 4/81- Checked qualified miners list with Post Office, Voter Registration Office, Motor Vehicle Division, telephone directories, city directories, and other sources. BACKGROUND Uranium Mining in New Mexico The Grants, New Mexico, uranium belt measures some 110 by 25 miles in Cibola, McKinley, and Sandoval counties (Kelley, 1963). The three chief mining districts are, from east to west, Laguna, Grants, and Gallup. Average annual production was about 5,500 tons, or 45% of United States uranium, from 1966 through 1978. Despite a drop in this figure in 1979, to 40%, New Mexico still leads the nation in uranium reserves and production (Hatchell, 1981). In 1918 carnotite, a yellow uranium vanadate, was identified in the Shiprock area (Chenoweth and Learned, 1980; N.M. Energy and Minerals Department, 1981). It received little attention at the time because of its apparently limited volume. In 1950 an important uranium outcropping was discovered by chance in limestone at Haystack Butte, northwest of Grants. In 1951 deposits were discovered in sandstone at Poison Canyon, north of Grants, and at Jackpile, northeast of Laguna. In 1955 finding of radioactive cuttings at an abandoned oil test site near Ambrosia Lake led to drilling and discovery of the first underground deposits (Melancon, 1963). Ore bodies were also found near Church Rock in the 1950's (Rautman, 1977). A uranium rush followed. At various times during 1952-1962, 60 mines and 5 mills were in operation (Gay, 1963). In the early 1960's the price of uranium fell, and many miners left the area. Subsequent market fluctuations have produced shutdowns and consolidations, development and expansion. I wish to submit this discussion item on an article published in the August issue of MINING ENGINEERING by Wala and Altman on the use of canonical diagrams for mine ventilation networks. The advent of computer graphics and plotting has enabled complex underground mine layouts to be displayed and plotted in a variety of three-dimensional formats that very closely represent the actual mine layout. This enables the ventilation engineer, who is familiar with the mine, to display the network pressures, quantities, resistances, and fan locations in a way that can be understood by everyone working at the mine. This is important if the ventilation engineer needs to discuss changes in ventilation with production personnel, or escapeway procedures with union personnel. While I can see some of the potential advantages in the canonical ventilation network diagram described by Dr. Wala, it appears to me that the fact that the diagram has no visual equivalence with the actual mine layout means that most mine personnel will find such a diagram almost incomprehensible. The authors have alluded to certain advantages with the canonical diagram. However, I find it difficult to see that these outweigh the fact that almost everything listed can be duplicated in isometric diagrams, and in a manner that is easily understandable to everyone in the mine from the miner to the mine manager. Perhaps the authors could show a clear example comparing an isometric with a canonical portrayal of a mine network showing the information that is immediately available from the canonical network that is not obvious in the isometric diagram. There is in this country a severe problem with the need for ventilation engineering and expertise to be used and accepted by mine management as a necessary part of mine planning. It seems to me that to introduce the requirement for further explanation so that management can understand a canonical network display will hinder more than help the recognition that ventilation engineering needs at so many mines in this country. However, I can see that the canonical approach does have its place in assisting the practicing mine ventilation engineer, wherever he or she exists in the organization chart for a typical mine. In this case, could the authors please indicate the availability of the computer program to compute and plot the canonical diagram for a mine ventilation network.

Ore blending for process optimization is becoming an increasing factor for managing cost and productivity. Economic mining and processing a very low value ore in an extremely competitive market results in constant cost-cummng initiatives. The inherent conflict between the lowest possible mining cost and the lowest possible milling cost is reviewed here in the context of blasting for autogenous mills. Iron ore blending focuses on a number of properties-liberation values, weight recovery and concentrate silica being the most important. Other chemical and metallurgical factors are also commonly controlled. Recent research has fueled an emerging interest in blending on physical ore properties as well. Fully autogenous mills rely on the large, competent fraction of crushed feed to act as grinding media. Previous test work indicated that Hibtac mills require specific amounts of 6- to 10-inch ore. High recirculating loads require a steady influx of large rock fragments. Blast designs, therefore, are presently characterized by wide patterns and low powder factors. Current efforts are aimed at improving mill throughput while reducing overall energy costs. Based on research and published case studies and the advent of optical measuring devices, Hibbing Taconite Company has embarked on a blast optimization program to identify optimum mill feed and to design blast fragmentation goals for each geological unit and each mining area. This paper outlines the preliminary findings of an ongoing, broad-based team effort which requires close cooperation of geologists, mine engineers, crushing and milling personnel. Three specific areas of investigation are reviewed: I) Historical relationships between powder factor and mill performance, 2) Blast fragmentation modeling using the Kuz-Ram model, and 3) Drill

By-products are of greater importance in lead and zinc mining than in any of the other major base metals. While I think most mining people would accept that statement, you would probably get some widely varying estimates when attempting to quantify the value of by-products in lead and zinc mining. We are now able to do this with our lead-zinc mine cost model. This model was originally developed as a zinc mine cost model to help us forecast long-term zinc supply and price as part of a study we completed in late 1979 entitled "Zinc - The Next Decade". Before demonstrating the importance of by-product revenue to lead- zinc mines, let me first explain how the cost model was constructed. I will discuss the model as it was originally constructed - as a zinc mine cost model. It has subsequently been expanded to include lead only mines and now can Be run either as a zinc or a lead mine cost model.

"The tunnel sector is excavated into a rock mass heavily affected by tectonics, defined as a regional fault. The rock around the tunnel support undertakes the non – elastic deformation and gradually detaches from the rest of the non affected rock mass, moving inside of the excavated area and tending to fill up the whole space. The initial solution of using stiff support consisting in double steel ribs I12 with circular shape in the upper part and straight vertical pillars in the lower part has proved to be inadequate. Based on the calculations of the subsidence phenomena and a mathematical model, the proposed alternative support was provided by special circular steel ribs – SG-23 –that allows a limited rib deformation (by relative slip between the arch segments) in order to mobilize the contact between the rock contour and the inner face of the rib - not only for the deformed rib but also for the neighboring ribs. 1. Hydropower parameters).The Livezeni intake reservoir is provided by a gated dam located 1250 m downstream of merging point between Jiul de Vest river and Jiul de Est river. The dam is equipped with three radial gates with flap gates with a span of 12 m each and the height of (6 + 3) m. It is a distinct privilege to have the opportunity of addressing this group today. Although I, myself, am not a mining engineer, I have always had profound admiration and respect for those of you who each day live and work according to the tenets of Murphy's Law. Murphy, as some of you may know, was an Irish philosopher whose sole contribution to his field was the observation, "In the mining industry, if anything can possibly go wrong, it will!" You have heard this afternoon a variety of papers, touching on or describing in some detail imminent problems which presently face the coal industry. Many of these problems show no signs of diminishing. Actually, there is good reason to believe that they will intensify as governing bodies pass additional enabling legislation and regulatory agencies adopt more stringent "Rules and Regulations". In many cases, these groups are seemingly oblivious or indifferent to either cost factors or technical problems involved in achieving the desired goals.

The prolonged exposure of equipment operators to shock and whole-body vibration (WBY) is linked to cumulative back, neck, and abdominal disorders. In low-coal mines, space restrictions make seat suspensions difficult to use in isolating operators from shock and WBY. Researchers at NIOSH, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, are responding to these issues by investigating viscoelastic foams. For the full-load case. an ergonomic seat with viscoelastic foams isolated the shuttle car operator from shock at 15Hz. Researchers used results from additional foam testing with an analytical model to identify viscoelastic foams that provide shock isolation at a frequency below 5 Hz.

The first stage of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's Red Line Extension Northwest, is a two-track rapid transit extension from Harvard Square in Cambridge, through three stations, to the Alewife Station/Garage complex in North Cambridge. The extension, about 5.0 km. (3.1 miles) in length, is entirely in tunnel, with the Alewife Station/Garage complex and adjacent line sections of tunnel constructed by cut-and-cover methods. The Station/Garage complex, just west of Alewife Brook Parkway, is in an area underlain by deep deposits of very soft highly sensitive clays. It is proposed to construct the station and adjacent tunnel sections by the slurry trench method, using the slurry wall as the permanent structural wall of the station and tunnel. The unusual nature of the underlying clay and its very high sensitivity raised questions concerning the feasibility of the proposed construction. Since research failed to reveal any construction precedent for the specific conditions encountered, a test section was undertaken to determine construction problems, resolve uncertainties, and to establish acceptable parameters for the construction of the slurry walls. PROJECT ORGANIZATION Sverdrup & Parcel as tunnel and transit systems consultant for the Red Line Extension-Davis Square to Alewife had overall responsibility for determining program objectives, project management and test implementation.

The Red Dog zinc-lead deposit, said to be the world's second largest, is located inside the Arctic Circle in northwestern Alaska - a location too harsh and remote for some mining companies but just right for Cominco Ltd. The complex has been in operation since November 1989 and is producing 508 kt/a (560,000 stpy) of zinc concentrate, 109 kt/a (120,000 stpy) of leadconcentrate and 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) of an Imperial Smelter Feed, a combined zinc-lead mixture that is too small to separate. All of this concentrate production derives from a relatively modest mine production of 5.4 kt/ad (6000 stpd) extracted from a surface pit. Despite being a high-grade zinc-lead deposit, Red Dog's metallurgy is complex, requiring a very fine grind and use of column cells for flotation. The Red Dog complex is located in the DeLong Mountains. They are characterized by eight stack and folded thrust blocks that contain sedimentary and igneous rocks. The Red Dog deposit is located in the second lowest thrust and ist hosted by late Mississippian to Permian age black shale, the Ikalukrok member of the Kuna formation. The Red Dog mining complex is operated by Cominco Alaska, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Cominco American, Inc, which, in turn, is owned by Cominco Ltd. In 1980, the deposit region was acquired by NANA Corp. as part of the Native American Claims Act Settlement of 1971. NANA is one of 12 such Native Corporations in Alaska. In 1982, NANA and Cominco American signed a develop¬ment agreement and formed Cominco Alaska to manage the project.

In order to control and dispatch the sewage water coming from 3 tunnels toward 2 downstream sewage tunnels, a large cavern has been excavated in a suburb of PARIS. Located at a depth of 47,00 m, it has been excavated using the NATM procedure through swelling clay, weathered sandstone, and marl and chalk. It is 16,50 m high, 12,40 m wide and 60, 00 m long, with an elliptical cross-section and its two ends are egg-shapped. The final lining of the cavern is composed of 30 to 40 cm of shotcrete, steel ribs and passive anchor bars. The excavation stages and related movements were surveyed by extensometers, pressure cells and convergence devices. The design, method of construction of the cavern and the results of the measurements made are commented.

Two key components make up the core of a rapid excavation operation. They are: the breaking up of the rock and its removal. Owing to the complexity inherent in mechanical rock-breaking and the relative infancy of the art, for a number of years the first of these two components has received virtually undivided attention from the industry. Only recently has some concern been expressed about the technology and the economics of the much ignored second component: muck removal. As the continuous boring machine's percentage downtime continues to trend lower in the future, the need for adequate and more effective materials handling systems in rapid excavation will become increasingly more acute. (1) Recognition of the need for a broader and more far-sighted approach to our problem has been eloquently underscored in the conclusions of the Committee on Rapid Excavation sponsored by the National Research Council: "Ultimate attainment of the desired cost and speed improvements is significantly dependent on recognition of the excavation process as a system whose subsystems are critically inter-related. Substantial amounts of full-scale field testing of integrated driving, muck removal, and support subsystems are required." (2)

I was asked here today to discuss the first long-term freight rate contract ever signed by a U.S. railroad and shipper. That was ICG's contract with the hoosier energy company to haul coal from southern Illinois to an Indiana power plant. I?ll also talk about why you can expect to see more such contracts in the future But first, let me tell you a little bit about the Illinois central gulf railroad and why coal contracts are so important to us. ICG is a principal mid-American freight carrier. We are one of the ten largest railroads in the united states and one of the ten largest coal-hauling railroads. ICG links the industrial great lakes region with the warm weather ports of the gulf coast. Some of the major points on our route map are Chicago; Indianapolis; Omaha; Kansas City; Memphis; St. Louis; and, of course, baton rouge and new Orleans.

The Fourth International Symposium on Hydrometallurgy was organized to give those in the minerals processing field an opportunity to discuss current topics of interest in the broad field of hydrometallurgy. Held in Salt Lake City, UT Aug. 1-5, 1993, this fourth symposium also paid tribute to Milton E. Wadsworth for his many contributions in this area over the past 40 years. The science of hydrometallurgy has made great strides since the last symposium was held 10 years ago. The use of electrochemical principles and techniques has produced encouraging results. For example, the application of in situ electrode spectroscopy has helped to understand the mechanisms operating in hydrometallurgical processes. Sophisticated computer models have been developed to handle the thermodynamic properties of concentrated electrolytes. However, it is up to the hydrometallurgist to continuing working on bridging the gap between theory and practice. The successful application of solvent extraction-electrowinning (SXEW) is one illustration of the successful transfer of technology. Its widespread use in the United States during the 1980s played a significant role in the revival of the domestic copper industry. Currently, electrowon copper accounts for about 30% of total US production. Impressive developments in precious metals recovery have also occurred. Since the last symposium, carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and heap leaching have become widely used in gold recovery. And recovery of refractory precious metals ores and concentrates by pres¬sure oxidation and bio-oxidation have made significant advances. In all these examples, hydrometallurgy has played a significant role in the recovery of minerals and metals from primary sources. In addition, considerable attention has been focused on the treatment and recovery of values from secondary sources.

It has been observed in some mineral processing plants that grinding circuit efficiency varies seasonally, such as in some plants which are located in the northern U. S. and Canada and undergo large seasonal temperature changes, with the grinding circuit efficiency different between summer and winter. This indicates that the temperature of grinding circuit slurry has a noticeable effect on grinding performance. The effect has rarely been studied. To this end, an investigation to examine the effects of changing temperature on efficiency and determination of the mechanism responsible has been carried out. Plant investigations and laboratory experiments have been conducted in order to study hydrocyclones. It was demonstrated that under otherwise constant operating conditions, the d50(c), size decreased linearly with increasing temperature, while the shape of the reduced efficiency curve remained constant. This effect was determined to be due to changes in slurry viscosity with temperature.

[Introduction] Since excess lung cancer mortality was first noted in the late 1800's among Joachimsthal-Schneeberg miners, there have been a number of studies of the long term health effects among various types of miners exposed to elevated levels of radon and its radioactive decay daughters. Substantial excesses of lung cancer have been noted among miners in the Joachimsthal mines (Sevc, 1976) , lead-zinc miners in Sweden (Axelson, 1979) , fluorspar miners in Canada (DeVilliers, 1971) , iron miners in Sweden (Renard, 1974) , uranium miners in Canada (Hewitt, 1976), and metal (Wagoner, 1963) and uranium miners in the United States (Lundin, 1971; Archer, 1976). The latter prospective cohort has also been shown to be at an excess risk of death due to tuberculosis, nonmalignant respiratory disease, and accidents when followed through September 30, 1974 (Archer, 1976). This report extends the followup of this cohort of miners through December 31, 1977 and expands the mortality analysis to investigate more cause-specific categories. [Methods] During the decade beginning with July, 1950, medical teams from the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) examined 3362 white and approximately 780 nonwhite males who had worked underground in uranium mines in the Colorado Plateau at least one month by January 1, 1964. Occupational, medical, and smoking histories were obtained during the examinations and often updated/confirmed during subsequent annual censuses of the miners conducted by the USPHS. The white miners now have been followed-up through December 31, 1977 using the Social Security Administration, Internal Revenue Service, direct telephoning and various other sources. Death certificates were obtained for the deceased and coded directly into the Seventh Revision of the International Classification of Diseases, Adapted, using the rules in effect at the time of death. Deceased miners for whom no certificate has yet been located were assumed dead on the date specified by the reporting agency, cause of death unknown. The uranium miners cohort was analyzed using a modified life-table system developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Person-years at risk of dying (PYAR) were calculated for each miner from his first USPHS medical examination date or date upon completion of one month of underground uranium mining if that was later. PYAR were calculated specific for five-year age groups, calendar periods, and periods after first underground uranium mining. The numbers of cause-specific observed deaths among the cohort occurring by December 31, 1977 were compared to the numbers of expected deaths. The expected deaths were calculated by multiplying the appropriate PYAR by the United States death rates for white males specific for five-year age groups, five-year calendar periods, and cause. The results were summed over the age and calendar period specific categories to obtain the total expected deaths for each cause. Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMR's) were calculated for each cause by dividing the observed number of deaths by the expected number of deaths and multiplying by 100. In some tables, two-sided 95% confidence intervals for the SMR's were computed using either Fisher exact confidence limits, if the observed frequency was less than eight, or approximate confidence limits, if the observed frequency was eight or greater, to indicate statistical significance. Because a priori hypotheses had been well established, one-sided lower confidence limits were used for tuberculosis, lung cancer, other nonmalignant respiratory disease (ONMRD), accidents, and total mortality. [Results] The cohort included 589 miners first examined in either 1950, 1951 or 1953; 753 first examined in 1954; 1235 first examined in 1957; 5 first examined in 1958; and 782 first examined in 1960. In Figure 1 the distribution of the cohort by first year of underground uranium mining indicates that 13.7% started before 1947 and would have thus had an opportunity to be followed beyond 30 years

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates world production of natural zeolites to be 2.7 Mt (3 million st) in 2013. China ranked ?rst with 2 Mt (2.2 million st), followed by the Republic of Korea at 230 kt (253,000 st) and Turkey at 50 kt (55,000 st). Japan?s production is reported to have increased as a result of zeolites, reportedly low grade local mordenites, being used to treat the low-level radioactive contaminants in the areas surrounding the damaged reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. China and other countries? high-volume, low-value construction applications, which include dimension stone, pozzolans and lightweight aggregate, are also included in production. This means the production data does not accurately indicate the quantities used in high-value added specialty applications. Consumption in the United States, according to USGS estimates, increased slightly, to an estimated 71.3 kt (78,400 st). Domestic uses for natural zeolites were, in decreasing order by tonnage, animal feed, pet litter, cement (primarily down-hole cement applications by the drilling industry), water purification, odor control, waste water cleanup, fungicide or pesticide carrier, gas absorbent, fertilizer carrier, oil absorbent, desiccant, catalyst and aquaculture. The six leading uses accounted for more than 70 percent of the domestic natural zeolite sales tonnage.

Test work and plant operation confirmed that semiautogenous (SAG) milling is a viable option for Inco's milling rationalization project at Sudbury only if pebble crushing is included. Throughput increases more than 50% with pebble crushing incorporated into the comminution process. The finer product of high-speed pebble crushing provides further energy savings. The unconventional approach of pumping the pebble crusher product, while simplifying plant layout, has produced challenging wear problems. Inco Ltd.'s Sudbury operations are located in northeastern Ontario, Canada, about 400 km (250 miles) north of Toronto. Inco has 11 operating mines around the rim of the Sudbury basin. The mines currently produce about 11 Mt/a (12 million stpy) of ore. This ore contains pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite in mafic host rocks. The milling facilities are designed to produce 108.8 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of nickel as concentrate. This concentrate is further processed through Inco's smelting and refining facilities to produce nickel, copper and several other metals. Before 1991, -200 mm (-8 in.) ore was shipped to two primary mills. The Clarabelle mill had a design capacity of 29 kt/d (32,000 stpd). Frood-Stobie had a capacity of 16.3 kt/d (18,000 stpd). The flowsheets of these mills were similar. Two stages of open-circuit crushing were followed by rod milling and closed-circuit ball milling. The product from the comminution circuit, at 12% +250 mm (+65 mesh), was first passed through magnetic separators to recover magnetic pyrrhotite. It was then sent through a four-stage flotation process. The first two stages produced a high-grade copper-nickel concentrate. The final two scavenger stages produced a low-grade copper-nickel concentrate containing nonmagnetic pyrrhotite.

Acid recovery employs ion exchange resin as an adsorption media for the separation of inorganic acids from mixtures of acids and their metallic salts. This technology has been used to treat spent pickling and plating liquors to recover acid for reuse in the bath and to reduce waste acid neutralization costs. Acid recovery can also be used for electrolyte treatment to facilitate valuable metal recovery and to improve product quality. Conventional fixed bed ion exchange (I-X) systems are impractical for acid recovery because of complex control design and large resin inventories needed to process strong acid concentrations. TETRA'S CCIX™ continuous I-X contactor has been used successfully in a simple, continuous operating mode to separate acid from its salt. Efficient separation is enhanced by refluxing which allows acid to be produced as a salt-free product at nearly its original strength. Continuous treatment also recovers heat to the bath and improves metal quality due to consistent acid quality.
