The Velvet mine is located in the Big Indian district of the Colorado Plateau. The general area, also known as the Lisbon Valley district, is about 65 kilometers southeast of Moab, Utah and about 120 Kilometers southwest of Grand Junction, Colorado. As shown by the slide, the Velvet area is typical of the high desert of the southwest United States. The elevation at the decline collar is 1,967 meters above sea level. To date, the Velvet has produced 1.5 million kilograms of U308 and 2.1 million kilograms of V205. The current production averages over 4,000 metric tons of ore per month. Access to the Velvet mine is by a 1,160 meter long decline. Fresh air is supplied through the decline and a 152 centimeter cased borehole. Contaminated air is removed by two 152 centimeter cased boreholes. The east side of the mine is mined using a conventional room and pillar method; whereas the west side is mined as combination conventional and random room and pillar,

The U.S. iron ore industry is located primarily in Northern Minnesota and Michigan's Upper Peninsula with one additional small plant in Missouri. There are currently some 10 plants operating that produce about 48 million tons per year of pellets. The major reagent use occurs in the three general areas of: flocculation, flotation and pellet additives. Minor areas of usage are for corrosion inhibition and dust suppression. Current practice as to types of reagents, consumption, and method of application are reviewed. The interaction of reagents with other parts of the process are discussed. Also included is a discussion of future reagent needs.

INTRODUCTION The work of the metallurgical engineer engaged in developing a leach, solvent extraction electro- winning process usually begins in the laboratory and generally proceeds via pilot plant testing before finally resulting in a commercial operation. The path leading to the development of the eventual process will involve a test program on leaching in order to derive information on the amenability of the copper-bearing material to acid dissolution, under various conditions. Commonly in North America the leach process of choice is either dump or heap leaching but it may also be in-situ leaching or the treatment of mine waste- waters and bleed streams. In the past, agitation and vat leaching have also been included in the list of options. Currently the economics of copper production dictate that only material of mineralogy and grade, capable of being leached without prior milling, will lead to a viable process. This is not necessarily true in other parts of the world where grades are higher and milling costs lower and therefore this paper con- fronts all the techniques available to the metallurgical engineer in terms of the evaluation of the solvent extraction process. Understanding the objectives of a laboratory and pilot plant evaluation of a solvent extraction route is important and these are described in some detail in this paper. Of at least equal importance is understanding limitations of such a test program and this aspect of process development is also discussed with reference to the kind of equipment and experimental practices that have been shown to produce results consistent with the objectives. WHERE TO BEGIN? At the inception of a project much information is developed on the variables of the leach process and indeed in some instances the type of leach that best suits the ore to be treated is the subject of intense investigation (Wadsworth 1983). The decision to treat the leach solution by solvent extraction focuses attention on the selection of the extractant most suited to the nature of the chemical composition of the solution. A laboratory screening program will probably need to be arranged in order to assist in narrowing the options and the following is suggested for this initial screening. Selection of a Representative Leach Solution This is preferably obtained from leaching a representative sample of the ore under conditions likely to pertain in the commercial leach circuit. As the conceptualized circuit flow sheet will undoubtedly involve the recycle of aqueous solutions via the leach, then it is desirable to know the nature of and the likely level of the impurity ions in the solution as well as the concentration of copper. The other most important parameter that is required is the free acid (Anon, Acorga Analytical Method) content of the solution. As a rule of thumb, it is always true that recovery across SX is maximized as the pH of the leach solution rises. Whilst a high pH may be desirable for SX recovery, it is not always desirable for the pH (or more correctly, the free acid) of the leach to rise too high. The working range, therefore, tends to be between 1.5-2.5 pH. At an early stage in process development it is likely that a number of ill-defined conditions will exist, making it difficult to decide on typical leach conditions in which case the screening tests should be carried out using a synthetic leach solution prepared from laboratory chemicals. In doing this the copper and free content should be carefully controlled along with the appropriate addition of major impurity ions as their sulphate salts. I consider it a distinct privilege to be afforded the opportunity of discussing the program of the Office of Coal Research. The principal activities I will be discussing are concerned with projects that fall in the utilization area. I will, to be sure, touch on other activities of the Office of Coal Research but am not equipped to discuss these activities in great detail. Research activities of the Office of Coal Research are conducted on a contract basis with commercial, academic, and non-profit institutions. We do not operate any laboratories of our own but we do maintain a very small staff for technical and administrative supervision of our contractors. We have consistently attempted to interest outstanding, creative, and practical research organizations in our program. We are constantly seeking the imaginative new idea that will materially reduce the cost of mining coal, transporting it, or will process it into a more convenient and useable form. In assessing proposals and in developing our program, we search for the improvements that will develop large-scale new uses for coal or coal products or those that support these new uses.

"Among Tokyo Metro’s approximately 200km of subway lines, the Tozai Line that connects Chiba Prefecture and mid-Tokyo experiences congestion of up to 199% at worst and relief of this has become urgent. Therefore, as it is imperative to increase the number of trains operating in the exceptionally congested area from mid-Tokyo going east, a large-scale renovation work is planned between Iidabashi Station and Kudanshita Station that will facilitate turn-back via 3 tracks. While ensuring the safe and stable operation responsible for about 1.35 million passengers daily, this highly difficult work of inner wall demolition and reinforcement of the side walls and floor slabs will only be implemented for 3 hours during late night. This paper discusses large-scale plans to improve turn-back facilities, and the methods of construction therein as an example of operational improvement of a subway network. 1) INTRODUCTION The Tokyo Metro Tozai Line (“Tozai Line”) opened over the entire 30.8 km distance from Nakano to Nishi-funabashi on March 29, 1969. It has the longest operating length of the nine Tokyo Metro lines, and was the first subway line to extend past the borders of the Tokyo Metropolis. Through train services with two other railway companies are available from the Tozai Line. Tozai Line trains join the Sobu Line of the East Japan Railway Company (“JR East”) and the Toyo Rapid Railway Line of Toyo Rapid Railway (“TR”) from Nishi-funabashi Station, and the JR Chuo Line from Nakano Station. The line is structurally distinctive in that 51% of it was built using the open-cut method, 43% of it is elevated and the remaining 6% was built when we used the shield method for the first time 1)2)3)."

Gentlemen: The subject of this paper is: ADVANCED APPLICATIONS OF BUCKET WHEEL EXCAVATORS AND RECLAIMERS. Against an urgent world wide energy crisis, the role of bucket wheel excavators and reclaimers in the surface mining of fossil fuels and other ores has been raised to new prominence. This paper will review the reasons for the expanded application of bucket wheel technology, its unique contributions, and other factors relative to volume, cost, versatility, and efficiency. Today, surface mining is faced with the twin challenge of (1), accelerating the rate of removal of massive quantities of overburden and ore, and (2), replacing comparable high volumes of overburden back into the mined-out portion of the pit. Optimum quantitites for - a single electrical power plant now range from 5 to 15 million tons of coal per year. The use of bucket wheels offers the best method for meeting this challenge at lowest possible cost. For example, an advanced application that also satisfies environmental concerns involves the simultaneous functioning of two bucket wheel excavators during surface mining operations. Working at spaced intervals and different levels in conjunction with a transfer conveyor and stacker, one excavator removes the ore while the other one transfers overburden to a stacker that replaces it back into the open pit. The result of this continuously operating cycle is: (1) removal of ore and replacement of overburden back into the pit in massive quantities, (2) at accelerated volume and extreme low cost that cannot be matched by conventional loading machines of any size, and (3) fulfills a basic environmental requirement which is to

In 1991, most industrialized countries, except for Germany, were in a recession or a period of reduced growth. The US economy, already in recession, suffered from mounting banking system losses and the uncertainty brought about by the Persian Gulf War. However, US and worldwide minerals exploration did not collapse as it did during the mid-1980s. Even though gold and base metal prices declined, prices were still above cash costs for most operations. This allowed the continuation of established exploration programs but sharply limited new initiatives. Exploration 1990-1991 Planned worldwide 1991 exploration expenditures declined by about 8% from 1990 levels, according to a survey of 153 companies by the Metals Economic Group (MEG). Canada was the leading exploration target with 23% of the total, followed by Australia and the US (19% each), South Africa (13%), Latin America (11%) and the South Pacific (7%). The remaining 8% was split evenly between Europe and the rest of Africa. In Latin America, Mexico and Chile are the most attractive countries for exploration. Recognizing the risks involved, the industry has been cautious about ventures in the former Soviet Union. Survey results also showed that while the majors expected to maintain exploration spending, smaller firms were cutting back or actively seeking farm-outs from the majors (personal communication, M. Wegener, MEG).

Manufacturers have improved various stirred mill types to be well adapted to fine and ultrafine grinding applications. These stirred mills, which are operated in wet or dry conditions, may be classified as horizontal — such as AHM-horizontal agitated media mill, IsaMill and Drais mill — or vertical — such as tower mill, Vertimill, Maxmill, Stirred Media Detritor and ATR vertical agitated media mill. The main difference between vertical and horizontal structures is in their operational variations. Additionally, the scaling-up of mills is also an important parameter for selecting the suitable orientation [1]. The purpose of this study was to investigate the dry grindability of calcite powders in a vertically and horizontally orientable laboratory batch-type stirred mill. The experimental results were evaluated using stress intensity analysis. The results showed that the d50 values decreased with increasing stress energy down to a certain point and then increased for both milling orientations. Even though the optimum stress energies for both vertical and horizontal orientations were in the range of 1 × 10−3 to 5 × 10−3 Nm at 750 and 1,500 kJ/kg energy consumption, the product size was finer for the horizontal orientation at the same stress energy value.

Effective October 1, 1958, President Eisenhower imposed, by Presidential Order, fixed import quotas on lead metal and lead concentrates and also on zinc metal and zinc concentrates. He did this in response to an escape clause case under the Trade Agreements Act filed by many of the large and small lead and zinc mining companies in September 1957. It is the purpose of this paper to give the experience of the lead-zinc industry under this order during its first two years and some observations on what might have come about under different conditions of U.S.A. consumption. Before considering these various experiences and observations, it seems wise to first outline briefly the basic problem which prompted such an order. Under the Tariff Act of 1930, the duty on pig lead was fixed at 2-l/8¢ per pound and slab zinc at 1-3/4e; per pound. The ores, concentrates and closely related products of these metals carried closely related duty rates. The Trade Agreements Act of 1934 and succeeding similar acts had given the, President the power to lower these and other duties. As a result-of various negotiations with foreign nations, by 1951 these duties had been lowered to their present day rates of 1-1/16 per pound on' pig lead and 7/10o, per pound on slab zinc. Related ores, concentrates and semi-fabricated forms of the metals received commensurate treatment. Under these acts, the Tariff Commission has the right to recommend to the President duty increases, specific quotas or both if find that imports have injured the affected industry. During the last 15 years, the North American Mining Industry has experienced increasing usage of cast high chromium white iron grinding media in wet grinding applications. First introduced into the cement industry (klinker grinding) where wear rate reductions of four or five times have been realized compared to steel balls, this same grinding media serve the iron, copper, and phosphate markets by resisting not only impacts and abrasion, but also corrosion which occurs in wet grinding. In these markets, single mills containing 250,000 kg of grinding balls are not un-common and hence the economic potential with respect to lower wear rates can be significant. Add to reduced wear rate the increased production efficiency that is possible and it is readily understood why much of the mining industry uses cast high chromium grinding media. Metallurgically, the alloys used consist of a martensitic matrix containing hard M7C3 eutectic carbides. Carbon (2.0 to 3.5%) and chromium (12 to 277.) are characteristically used to arrive at the desired properties.

The outlook for coal continued to improve in 1980, fueling expectations that a long-awaited boom is at hand. The surprising surge in coal exports contributed to the latest wave of optimism. Overseas exports hit 66 Mt in 1980, buoyed by a significant increase in demand for steam coal, up from 1979's 2.3 Mt to 15 Mt in 1980. US coal production rose 6.9% to 750 Mt in 1980 and total coal consumption increased 8.1% to about 725 Mt, due primarily to higher world oil prices and setbacks in the US nuclear power industry. Yet the industry is beset with problems-both internal and external. Although demand for US coal is growing, the industry's excess productive capacity is estimated at over 90 Mt/a. Public utilities, where real increases in coal consumption must come, are still moving slowly, blaming delays on antipollution equipment costs. Coal supplies are uncertain, subject to the vagaries of the UMW. For the sixth time since 1964, the coal industry and UMW failed to renew their labor contract without a national strike, reinforcing the perception held overseas that the US is not a reliable supplier. The expected boom in coal exports will, in part, depend on our ability to assure foreign buyers that US sources are dependable. The US industry is also plagued by inadequate facilities linking mines and consumers: inadequate rail systems, coal ports, and barges, For US producers to be competitive, ports must be expanded, rail lines improved, and harbors dredged to allow 136-kt ships to load coal. The im¬provements will require an enormous commitment and investment. Despite these major problems and unresolved issues, two factors continue to favor an increased reliance on coal as an energy source: abundant US reserves and coal's comparative price advantage. Coal's performance in the 1980s may at last exceed its promise.

Possibilities of electric pulse disintegration are discussed with emphasis on high selectivity of the process as compared to mechanical comminution methods especially when applied to polymineral ores. Physical explanation of this phenomenon is suggested. The authors present results of some experimental tests illustrating regularity of this phenomenon irrespective of origin of ores or dissemination pattern of valuable minerals including both dissipated and accessory minerals. Some operating plants applying this principle are described the plants used either for mineral research purposes or for obtaining pure monomineral fractions or for treatment of gems to be faceted. Obstacles for implementation of this technology are mentioned.

The asbestiform habit is most commonly developed in certain amphiboles and chrysotile, but other minerals also may crystallize with this unusual habit. The habit may be characterized by (1) a fibril structure, single or twinned crystals of very small widths (generally less than 0.5 pm), which have grown with a common fiber axis direction, but are disoriented in the other crystallographic directions; (2) anomalous optical properties, primarily parallel extinction; (3) unusual tensile strength; (4) high aspect ratio; and (51 flexibility. In addition, there is evidence to indicate that some amphibole asbestos may have unusual surface properties. ASBESTOS AND THE ASBESTIFORM HABIT Asbestos is defined as a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven, are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation, and therefore are suitable for uses where in- combustible, nonconducting, or chemically resistant material is required (Gary, et al., 1974). The most common minerals that may occur with the asbestiform habit are chrysotile, grunerite (amosite], riebeckite (crocidolite), actinolite, anthophyllite, and tremolite; although the development of this habit among these minerals is rare. Other minerals, most notably other amphiboles, can occur in this habit, but no others have been mined commercially as asbestos. All asbestos is confined to metamorphic rocks, even though other habits of the amphiboles are common in igneous rocks. Slip fiber veins are the most common deposits (South African amosite, Canadian chrysotile, etc.), but mass fiber deposits also may occur such as California chrysotile or mountain leather. Field relations and experimental data support the hypothesis that metasomatism is the dominant process in the formation of asbestos fibers, amphibole as well as serpentine. The crystal habit of a mineral is the shape or form a crystal or aggregate of crystals take on during crystallization. The asbestiform habit has a number of characteristics that differentiate it from other habits. Chief among these is the fibril structure.Afibri1 is a single or twinned crystal with a very small width, generally less than 0.5 pm, and an extremely high aspect ratio; bundles of fibrils may have lengths reaching into the cm. Fibrils share a common crystal growth direction along the long axis of the fiber, but appear to be disoriented with respect to one another in the other crystallographic directions. The structure of the individual fibrils, and the organization of fibrils within a fiber may differ among the various types of asbestos. The fibril structure of asbestos is probably a factor in controlling a number of secondary properties that include high tensile strength, flexibility sufficient for weaving, and anomalous optical properties. The high tensile strength of asbestos is quite remarkable, exceeding that of the ordinary varieties by a thousand fold (Zoltai, 1978). In part, this may be attributed to the lack of defect on the fibril surfaces (Zoltai, 19781, but some contribution also must come from the existance of bundles and the nature of the ordering of and forces among the fibrils. The flexibility is not only enhanced by the fact that the fibrils may slip past one another, but by their small widths and extreme aspect ratios. However, structural defects parallel to the fiber axis also may contribute to this property. Among the common commercial asbestos types, the greatest flexibility is found in chrysotile and the least in grunerite asbestos (amosite), varying inversely with fibril thick- ness. In addition, at least for chrysotile, composition also may affect the flexibility of the fibers. Finally, most asbestos minerals are mono- clinic, but optically display parallel extinction (Heinrich, 1965, and Wylie, 1978). The Gulf Coast States ranging from South Texas to Alabama contain vast resources of lignite ranging in energy content from about 4000 to 7000 Btu/lb (as-received) with sulfur content ranging from about 0.5 to 2 percent. Currently, the strip mining rate is about 35 million tons per year in Texas and essentially zero in the other Gulf Coast states. Estimates of future mining rates are as high as 310 million tons per year by the year 2000 with 240 being in Texas. In this paper, we examine the life cycle of the surface mineable lignice based on the most recent estimates of surface mine recoverable resources with two scenarios. The first indicates that a 310 million tpy rate could be sustained for only 15 years while the second scenario suggests that the 310 million tpy could be sustained for 25 to 30 years. If lignite resources are required beyond those that are surface mineable, the deep basin lignite will be developed. Five strategies for developing deep basin lignite are discussed.

Studies carried out over the last 10 years reveal that precipitating particles which may appear in alkaline solutions of long-chain amines and in acidic solutions of fatty acids exhibit clear isoelectric points around pH 10.6-1 1 for dodecylamine and around pH 2.5-3 for fatty acids. These colloidal species can accumulate at solid/liquid and liquid/gas interfaces and affect flotation. While the precipitate in solutions of fatty acids apparently can chemically interact with the mineral surfaces and is flotation-active if sufficiently long conditioning time is available, the cationic flotation of quartz in alkaline solutions is depressed by the colloidal precipitate. The experimental data available in literature on the adsorption, electrokinetic, contact angle and surface forces measurements in the solutions of the weak electrolyte collectors are analyzed and the role played by the precipitate is discussed. It is shown that these concepts allow for an explanation of the selective flotation of sylvite from halite with long-chain amines in potash ore flotation.

Laboratory tests showed that ozone can destroy free cyanide and weakly complexed cyanide (copper and zinc cyanides). The iron cyanide complexes were resilient to ozonation but they were effectively eliminated by precipitation with Fe (II) ions under controlled pH conditions. Tests carried out with effluents from a number of gold mills confirmed the results obtained previously in the laboratory. The industrial samples contained cyanide in the form of free cyanide and also complex copper, zinc and iron cyanides. Solutions that contained up to 184 mg/L total cyanide, after the ozone treatment analyzed only 2-3 mg/L dissociable cyanide and 50-90 mg/L CN(t) (accounted for by iron complexes). After precipitation with ferrous ions total cyanide was reduced below 1.5 mg/L. For most solutions ozone consumption ranges from 3 to 6 g per g of cyanide destroyed. However, certain impurities (such as SCN and S203 ), present in some effluents, increase ozone consumption and make it more difficult to reduce copper concentration to satisfactory levels.

For many years excavations were made in rock exclusively by conventional blasting methods, and without concern for damage to the rock surfaces which remained after the excavation was completed. Recently, however, there is an increasing awareness for the importance of making rock excavations with as little damage as possible to the remaining rock surfaces; consequently, several revolutionary new precision blasting techniques have been developed during the past few years. These techniques, variously known as cushion, smooth- wall, perimeter, pre-shear, and pre-split blasting, basically involve the creation of a fracture plane in the rock between a series of blasted holes. The variations in each of these techniques are largely due to the differences in hole diameters, hole spacings, methods of charging, and sequence of blasting used to achieve certain specific results. The development of these precision blasting techniques was initiated by Canadian Industries Limited in 1953 at the time the Sir Adam Beck No. 2 Hydro-electric Project was under construction by the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario. Since then, these techniques have been somewhat advanced, and they have been applied with varying degrees of success to a number of projects. These projects include railroad and high- way cuts, dam spillway channel excavations, canal excavations, tunnel driving, shaft sinking, and other underground applications.

Most coal mining areas of the Western United States are characterized either by thick beds, steep pitches or heavy cover. Individually, each of these may present inherent safety hazards that influence miring. When all are met at one location, the combined effect is to make the safe operation of the mining property a challenge to management. These combined, conditions are met in most coal mines in southeastern Utah including those of the United States Steel Corporation. This coal bed measures up to 16 feet in thickness, the pitch is as much as 25% and mining is under a cover approaching 2, 000 feet. The Sunnyside coal bed is found in the Book Cliff Mountains, a great escarpment extending from west of Castle Gate, Utah, some 180 miles to Grand Junction, Colorado. West of Green River, Utah, the Book Cliffs swing sharply to the north because of the domelike uplift of the San Rafael Swell to the southwest..It is in this northerly extension of the Book Cliffs that the Sunnyside coal in the Blackhawk Formation of the Mesa Verde Group, Upper Cretaceous Age is found. The strata are transected by numerous faults with from a few inches to as much as a hundred feet of displacement. All of these faults have had some effect on the mining operation, either in roof control or, in the case of major faulting, the pattern of mine development.

An alternative flowsheet was designed for the flotation treatment of a complex sulfide ore from the Sotiel Mine in Spain. The ore contains 0.71% Cu, 2.24% Pb and 5.63% Zn. Two specially developed synthetic collectors, methyl-mercapto-benzoxazole (MMBO) and 6n-propoxy-mercapto-benzo-thiazole (PMBT), were examined. MMBO exerts a specific action on copper and zinc minerals after treatment with copper sulfate, and PMBT exerts a specific action on Pb minerals. Flotation operating variables (pH, frother type, frother quantity and feed particle size) were examined by means of rougher flotation tests to determine the optimum conditions for the new collectors. Once the optimum conditions were determined, a series of open flotation circuits were run on feeds of various particle sizes (obtained by different types of grinding). The objective was to obtain high-grade Cu and Zn concentrates. The results of the open-circuit tests demonstrated that a Cu concentrate grading from 18% to 23% Cu and a Zn concentrate grading from 40% to 48% Zn can be produced.

The present interest in large diameter grinding mills and the rapidly rising cost of the drive in proportion to the cost of the mill establishes a need to explore the drive system in detail. The drive for a seven to eight thousand horsepower mill will cost from 1350 thousand to $600 thousand which represents nearly half the total cost of the mill package, and requires as much building space as the mill proper. Some of the drive components require a longer time to manufacture and the installation time and costs are equal to those for the mill. It is apparent that the drive has become a dominant factor in the overall mill design consideration. A new plant requires a tremendous investment in both time and money. With the high degree of competition in the mining industry, low capital cost is an exceedingly important factor in the development of a project. It is just as important, however, to insure that the equipment is going to perform satisfactorily for the anticipated life of the project without adding unplanned operating, maintenance and replacement costs.
