In view of the success of recent laboratory studies using X-ray computed tomography (CT) to determine coal washability and with the availability of high-speed CT systems, it now seems possible to design an on-stream washability system for the control of coarse coal-cleaning circuits. Design features for such a system are examined and possible control strategies are discussed for different applications.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion project in coastal Virginia, USA will add two 1.5-mile (2.4 km) TBM bored tunnels alongside two existing immersed-tube tunnels between artificial islands. The site’s unusual constraints and the requirements of a large-diameter variable-density TBM shaped the design-builder’s decisions for handling TBM inputs and outputs, siting the TBM plant and supporting equipment, and sequencing tunnel-construction operations. This paper addresses the logistics necessary to enable key functions of the 46-ft (14-m) TBM and its ancillary equipment, including transport of most materials by barge, U-turn of the TBM on an artificial island, and delivery of materials for the second tunnel through the first one while interior structures are under construction.

In simpler times, construction was a cooperative undertaking. The frontier tradition of barn-raising is the construction equivalent of the academic ideal of a single student seated on a log with Horace Greeley. In a more complex world, ideals become more elusive. Still, it was only a generation ago that toll revenue bond financed projects generally involved a team composed of investment bankers, engineers, and construction contractors, who all shared a common objective -- to create something useful, at minimum cost and in minimum time, with fair compensation to all involved. In an increasingly contentious public climate, the team has too frequently been splintered into separate camps of owners, engineers, and contractors, who have lost the old objective of creation and have, under the guidance and control of the lawyers, substituted two new primary objectives: 1. To protect one's own skin. 2. To detect and punish culpable negligence of one of the other parties. This process has become so ludicrous that a number of thoughtful observers from all of the camps (including even some lawyers) have come to recognize that there must be a better way to undertake construction works than to use them as wrestling arenas. The road to improved contracting methods starts with mutual understanding of each other's problems and viewpoints. To this end, discussions such as this RETC session make a useful contribution. To

This paper discusses the results of a laboratory investigation carried out to study the microscale flow characteristics of copper ores and the variation in flow behavior resulting from flow of leach solution. Fractures in 1.5 and 4 inch diameter cores were mapped by visual inspection. The cores were stressed in a triaxial stress field representative of in situ conditions. The permeability of the samples to water was then estimated. The samples were exposed to 20 g/l sulfuric acid and the experiment repeated. The Permeability of unleached samples ranges from 10-1 to 10-19 m2 and it increases as leaching progresses. The porosity variation and the rate of recovery of copper from the specimen during leaching were also studied.

Introduction The frigid regions of Canada's high arctic islands are well-known for major oil and gas explorations. But mining leads the way in development. Cominco Ltd.'s Polaris mine is in its second full year of commercial production, and outstripping the rated production capacity foreseen by its planners. The Polaris mine is located on the shore of Little Cornwallis Island, near the settlement of Resolute Bay. The mine property is compact. It occupies about 3 km2 (0.5 sq miles) of the vast Arctic landscape. A number of mining and technological firsts were necessary to bring a mine into production at this 76° North latitude. Development constraints that had to be overcome included climate, remote location, and the limited ice-free shipping season. Construction of the entire process plant and ancillary facilities took place on a barge in the South where labor and supplies are plentiful. The plant was towed through ice-strewn waters to its permanent location at the mine site 1450 km (900 miles) from the North Pole. Freighters moved the first shipments to the South during ice break-up in late summer 1982. Most of the zinc concentrate is sold to European smelters. The remainder is tolled at a custom smelter in Europe, and the resulting metal is sold by Cominco. Lead concentrate is sold to European smelters. The mine was designed to produce 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy) of zinc concentrate and 41 kt/a (45,000 stpy) of lead concentrate. Actual production in 1983 was considerably greater, with both mill throughput and feed grades being higher than forecast. Production was 217 kt (239,300 st) of zinc concentrate and 51 kt (56,300 st) of lead concentrate. Average milling rate was 2.3 kt/d (2500 stpd), well above the designed capacity of 2.1 kt/d of (2300 stpd). Arctic Climate Extremes The climate is typical of the Arctic: very dry with short, cool summers and long, cold winters. From November through February, there is continuous darkness. Continuous daylight prevails from April to August. Precipitation is light, rivaling the Sahara desert at about 127 mm (5 in.) of rain and snow a year. An almost continual wind forms deep snow drifts against any obstacle on the ground. Temperatures range from a winter low of about -50°C (-58°F) to a relatively pleasant 15°C (59°F) during sunny days in August. Freeze-up begins in September and ice thickness increases from less than 0.3 m (1 ft) in early October to a maximum of about 2.1 m (7 ft) in May. Carbon dioxide, a by-product of combustion reactions, is a greenhouse gas linked to climate change. At Michigan Technological University, we have studied the capture of CO2 using alkali scrubbing solutions in a pilot scale packed bed counter-current scrubbing column. To do this, we have simulated flue gas by combining streams of CO2 and compressed air. Real flue gas has impurities such as CO, SO2, and NOx, and has lower levels of O2 than our simulated flue gas. In order to study CO2 capture from a real flue gas, the Department of Chemical Engineering worked with the Facilities department to install a pilot scale scrubbing column in the Michigan Tech steam plant. Experiments were conducted using a sample stream of the flue gas from the boiler in the steam plant. Data collected from these experiments were compared to the data collected from identical experiments conducted on simulated flue gas in the lab. The capture efficiency of the real flue gas scrubbing column is discussed in this paper. BACKGROUND The most common equipment used to separate CO2 from a flue gas stream is a counter-current packed-bed scrubbing column. The department of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University has two such pilot scale columns. In order to study the effect of impurities found in real flue gas, one is installed in a controlled laboratory using a simulated flue gas created by mixing CO2 and compressed air. This column will be used to establish a baseline for percent capture analysis and is displayed by figure 1. The second scrubbing column is identical to the first, and is installed in the Michigan Tech central energy plant. The plant produces up to 130,000 lb/hr of 80 psig steam to provide hot water and heat for campus buildings. A typical wintertime load burns around 25,000 SCFH of natural gas; this load releases 1.4 metric tons of CO2 per hour. The flue gas the steam plant produces is roughly 7.5% CO2 by volume. In order to study CO2 capture from this flue gas, a tap has been installed on the main exhaust duct which draws a sample of the flue gas into the pilot scale scrubbing column. Figure 2, a simplified diagram of the steam plant, shows that the tap was installed between the economizer and the stack condenser.

Efficient methods for the removal of copper from heap-leach solutions without mobile organic phases are a current mining industry need. To satisfy this need, a selective, high-capacity, durable solid material is required. The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) developed a set of materials based on current solvent-extraction chelates that provide selective copper concentration in the presence of high concentrations of iron. In contrast to conventional solvent extractions, the author's strategy anchors the chelators to a nonpolymeric solid substrate through the use of a custom-designed linker molecule. The fundamental synthetic routes to these materials have already been established, and attachment to the solid surfaces have been achieved in an efficient manner. The author's continuing research is focused on the optimization of the synthetic pathways to these solid materials and the evaluation of their copper-capturing capabilities.

This paper summarizes the analyses of ventilation layouts for mines that experience both spontaneous combustion. The major focus is placed on the longwall coal mine layouts used in several countries. Each of the different layouts is modeled in the form of a ventilation network. The gob of a longwall panel is the most critical location for the occurrence of spontaneous combustion. Airflow leakage paths inside the gob are simulated by using a simplified grid-like network. Computer simulations with this model indicates that the W-system of ventilation is most effective in minimizing air leakage into the gob. Homer, the U-system of ventilation, with pressure balancing behind the face support line, is also found promising for longwall panels. The magnitude of air leakage into the gob is observed to change with the advance or retreat of bee, thus requiring appropriate balancing of pressure to maintain the leakage at a minimum.

Spalding DeDecker Associates, Inc. (SDA) designed a tunnel project that fulfilled the Sustainability Objectives of Social Equity, Environment, and Economics. The project translated the principles of Sustainable Development into actions that lessened the impacts of construction on environment, lives of residents, businesses, traffic, and other social systems (i.e., shopping, recreational, and educational). The project involved the construction of a 16,108 feet of 84 inch diameter sanitary sewer interceptor by tunneling 40 feet beneath the ground surface through difficult geological and hydrogeological settings. An effective public information and stakeholders relationship program was developed to achieve the stated objectives of sustainability.

Residential and commercial plumbers in the United States were introduced to Viega?s copper press technology in 1999. In short, the technology allows plumbers and installers to join copper pipe securely in four to seven seconds on pipe sizes of 1.2 to 10 cm (0.5 to 4 in.) by pressing the connections with specialized tools and fittings rather than through sodering or welding. The water- and air-tight technology, first introduced in Germany in 1989, includes three different sealing elements, a variety of materials and a selection of configurations. By eliminating the need to thread or solder pipe, connections and repairs can be made quickly and securely. Installations are also much quicker and as secure as traditional methods.

The research work reported in in this paper deals with the monitoring of roof behavior in a drift mine located in Eastern Kentucky operating in the Coalburg Seam. The thickness of the seam at the monitoring site ranges between 9 and 10 feet with the immediate roof changing from sandstone to shale then back to sandstone. Shale thickness varies between 0 and 2.5 feet. The characteristics of the immediate shaly roof were monitored with 38 dynamometers which were set up in three survey lines to cover the entire range of shale distribution. The dynamometers are capable of providing accurate load readings in the range of +/- 5 pounds. To closely observe the contribution of moisture toward roof deterioration the dynamometers were set up in intake and neutral airways. A television borescoping camera was used in conjunction with the dynamo- metric instrumentations at pre- determined observation holes to physically observe and record the separation process of the shale and sandstone stratum with respect to time. Monitoring took place between January 1985 through January 1986 in order to cover a full cycle of dry and wet mine conditions associated with the seasonal changes. Analysis of the data show a trend of roof deterioration induced by condensation and eventual penetration of moisture within the immediate roof bedding planes, leading to rapid disintegration of the mine roof.

CODELCO-CHILE, the world's largest copper producer, began an integrated study of the informatics situation in the corporation at the end of 1980. As a result, a five years strategic Systems Plan was elaborated and approved by top Corporate management. Main points in this plan were: a systems architecture with information integration to the top level management; a higher degree of information technology in the production areas, an optional systems development resources utilization and a high profitability of the plan itself. During the study phase a series of theoretical definitions were fixed and used as a basis for the plan's design. A "common systems" approach was chosen as the development strategy instead of corporate systems or separate divisional efforts. Top management should be highly involved in the revisions of the plan, as well as qualified users should be chosen as project managers. The systems architecture should grant the information integration to the corporate level, in order to support an integrated planning and administration environment for the corporation. A total of 15 projects were defined, involving 570,000 man-hours and shifting the development efforts towards the production and production services areas. The paper presents a critical evaluation of the whole process, showing its good and bad aspects and a positive global balance. It also points some suggestions and hints to any corporation who wishes to get involved in a similar experience.

INTRODUCTION A variety of instruments are available for measuring or monitoring the performance of underground mine-ventilation systems. In general terms, the instruments may be classified as those that measure air velocity and those that measure gaseous concentrations. All costs herein are in terms of 1978 US dollars. The mention of a specific manufacturer or device is not intended to be an endorsement by the US Bureau of Mines. AIR-VELOCITY INSTRUMENTS The basic instruments used for measuring the air velocity in mines are the vane anemometer and the smoke tube. Vane Anemometer Of the air-velocity instruments, the 102-mm (4.0¬in.) vane anemometer is the most common and is available as either a low- or high-speed type. The low-speed anemometer generally is the most suitable for measuring the velocities in ordinary airways. For a rough check of the velocity in an airway, it usually is satisfactory to hold the anemometer by hand, positioning it in the center of the airway for 30 sec. However, the resultant error may be as high as 25% , and such a hand-held approach is unsuitable when accurate or reliable measurements are required. To obtain more accurate measurements, the proper procedure is as follows: 1) Since holding the anemometer by hand generally causes the instrument to read about 15% high, it is mounted on a 0.6-m (2-ft) extension rod. 2) The airway is divided into equal right and left halves. A 1-min traverse is used in each half, moving the anemometer smoothly up and down in a zigzag pattern so that the entire half is covered within the allotted minute. 3) The manufacturer's correction table is applied to the readings to adjust the velocity calculation as necessary. Whenever possible, anemometer readings should be obtained in a long straight section of airway that has a constant cross-sectional area. Bends and obstructions should be avoided, since they cause turbulence and other discontinuities in the airflow and can degrade the accuracy of the velocity measurements. Although a series of velocity measurements at one location usually corresponds to within a few percent, this is not an indication that the airflows calculated from those readings are completely accurate. One reason is that the correction table provided with the instrument generally is not for that specific instrument; instead, it represents the average correction for all such instru¬ments made by the particular manufacturer. Most cor¬rection tables specify a correction factor of from 0 to 15%, depending upon the velocity. However, even after correction, the instrument error still may range from 3 to 5%. At low velocities such as those below 0.76 m/s (150 fpm), the instrument error can be two or three times greater than this, ranging from 6 to 15%. The new ball-bearing anemometers generally perform somewhat better at low velocities than did the older conventional anemometers. Another source of error is introduced when measur¬ing the cross-sectional area of the airway or entry. Under the best of circumstances, measurement errors, instrument errors, and a host of other minor errors all combine to cause a total error of at least 10% in the velocity calculation. The vane anemometer also can be used with reason¬able accuracy to measure airflows in mine-ventilation ducts. In this application, the anemometer is mounted on a rod and is held at the center of the duct end. For a duct that is discharging air, the average velocity in the duct is 85% of the centerline reading (Northover, 1957). For a duct that is taking in air, the average velocity is 70% of the centerline reading (Haney and Hlavsa, 1976). To measure the airflow discharged from a regulator or from a small hole in a stopping or bulk¬head, a correction factor for the area is necessary. A good approach in this situation is to traverse the area of the regulator or hole, holding the anemometer with an extension rod. This provides an average velocity that is multiplied by 85% of the measured area of the regulator or hole. In all cases, the manufacturer's instrument cor¬rection table must be used and applied properly. For accurate results, the anemometer should be returned to the manufacturer for periodic cleaning and checking. If it is in daily use, the anemometer should be returned about once per year, and proportionally less frequently if the usage is less frequent than on a daily basis. Smoke Tube The smoke tube may not appeal to individuals who believe that good measurement results can be obtained only with expensive, complicated, and fragile instru¬mentation. Nevertheless, smoke works about as well as anything for the routine measurement of low air velocities in mines. The following procedure yields reasonably good results: 1) Two marks are scratched 7.6 m (25 ft) apart on the floor of the airway. 2) The smoke tube is used to release a cloud of smoke in the center of the airway, about 0.9 m (3 ft) upstream of the first mark on the floor. 3) A timed interval begins when the leading edge of the smoke cloud passes over the first mark, and the interval stops when the leading edge of the cloud passes over the second mark. 4) A factor of 20% is subtracted from the cal¬culated velocity to determine the true average velocity, providing a correction for the centerline and for the spreading effect at the front of the cloud. American Barrick Resources Corp. has come farther, faster in the last 11 years than any mining company in recent memory. Acquisition of Lac Minerals Ltd. in August 1994 now makes Barrick the largest gold producer in the world outside South Africa. In terms of market capitalization, the company is the world's most valued gold producer. American Barrick's 28.3-km2 (7000acre) Goldstrike property on Nevada's Carlin Trend, the primary engine for past growth, was purchased in 1987 for $62 million. Regarded as an attractive exploration target, Goldstrike instead propelled American Barrick to the front rank of world gold producers. In 1993, the company produced 50.75 t (1,631,988 oz), 44.78 t (1,439,929 oz) from Goldstrike. Reserves on the property totaled 905 t (29.1 million oz) at the end of 1993, the largest in North America.

The motion of grinding balls has been the subject of study since 191 9 when Davis published the first treatise on this subject. Subsequently came the notion that knowing mill power draft, using Bond equation or others, is sufficient to do an analysis of grinding. Next, population balance models provided accurate scale-up from small laboratory size mills to very large plant size mills. However, this success was not repeated when dealing with semiautogenous grinding mill. The study of charge motion with the discrete element method provides support and answers to such issues. Besides providing an accurate picture of charge motion in large mills, the method begs the investigator to study grate and pulp lifter equally critically with fluid dynamic principles. Hence, in recent years, the field of comminution in grinding mills is advancing on a firm footing.

Mississippi Valley Type Pb-Zn deposits are widespread in the midcontinent U.S. and have been mined from the 1800's to present. Some tens of thousands of acres of mined land in the Tri-State District have been designated as Superfund sites as a result of surficial mine wastes and ground waters with elevated levels of metals. EPA considers the surficial mine wastes to be hazardous and a major source of acid mine drainage fAMD) that degrades water resources and threatens human health and the environment. To mitigate potential risks at one site near Galena, Kansas, a group of mining companies who had been identified by EPA as Potentially Responsible Parties IPRPs) proposed subgrade disposal of the mining wastes in shafts and subsidence features. However, this proposal was challenged by the Agency on grounds related to AMD and the potential for degradation of ground water quality. The PRP team developed a program of materials characterization, laboratory-scale leaching, and finally large-scale, pilot testing in the field. Static and dynamic leaching tests at both laboratory scale fusing artificial rainwater under both variably and fully saturated conditions) and field scale (using pH 4.5 ground water) showed that the surficial wastes do not produce acidic leachate and are not a long-term source of metals. Laboratory chemical and mineralogical tests show that the mine wastes contain substantial carbonate, but very limited iron sulfides, consistent with the leach test results. EPA "characterization" tests fEP Toxicity and TCLP) compare very poorly with tests simulating the expected leaching conditions. While these tests would classify the surficia1 wastes as "hazardous, they do not characterize the behavior of the high-volume, low-concentration, coarse-grained materials with respect to environments and disposal options of interest. To be meaningful, characterization of mining wastes must be performed in a manner that simulates the environmental conditions that are actually of interest with respect to a specific decision, such as subgrade disposal in the saturated zone.

Introduction A mine characteristic curve is of great importance for both theoretical analysis and daily management of a mine ventilation network. Ventilation engineers are well acquainted with the ways of obtaining and using a mine characteristic curve that is conventionally associated only with single-fan networks. However, for a multiple-fan network, difficulty has long been recognized in defining the curve, not to mention, obtaining or using it. To extend the concept of mine characteristic curves for a multiple-fan network, a subsystem-based approach has been introduced by Wang (1992a). He defines a subsystem characteristic curve for a multiple-fan network and discusses the numerical procedure for constructing the curve. A graphical method of obtaining a subsystem characteristic curve for serial-parallel, multiple-fan networks has also been accomplished (Wang, 1992b). In spite of the maturity of the fundamental concepts related to and the numerical analysis tool for a multiple-fan ventilation network, information regarding the related laboratory tests is very scarce. To make up this gap, laboratory experiments have been done by using a two-fan experimental network. This paper presents the methodology and major findings regarding the construction and features of a subsystem characteristic curve. Characteristic curves and measurement fundamentals A characteristic curve A characteristic curve is a graphic presentation of the relationship between any two variables of a two-terminal component. It is typically defined in the form of a quantity-pressure curve for a ventilation component, which can be a single branch (airway), a fan, a regulator, a portion of a network or even a whole network. If a component is a single branch, the curve is called a branch characteristic curve. If it is a fan, then the curve is called a fan characteristic curve, and so on. Figure I illustrates the characteristic curves of some typical ventilation components. A general method for obtaining a characteristic curve from measurement is to apply an adjustable-pressure source between the two terminals of a component and measure the quantities corresponding to the different pressures. Mine characteristic curve A single-fan network can be easily divided into two ventilation components, the fan and the remaining network. The latter consists of only branches and regulators. Under this subdivision scheme, two characteristic curves can be constructed. They are the fan characteristic curve and the characteristic curve of the remaining network. The latter is referred to as the mine characteristic curve or the system characteristic curve. Although the general method for constructing a characteristic curve from measurement can be applied to obtain a mine characteristic curve, there is a shortcut for constructing the curve by introducing a mine resistance factor R. It is a constant if all of the resistance factors in the network are constant. R relates mine pressure H with quantity Q as in: H=RQ2 (1) For a given R, Eq. (1) can be directly used to plot a mine characteristic curve by assigning a series of Q values and calculating the corresponding H values. Hence a shortcut to constructing a mine characteristic curve is to measure one set of mine pressure H and quantity Q values, calculate the mine resistance factor R using Eq. (1) and then plot the curve. Subsystem characteristic curve Applying a similar scheme as is used for a single-fan system, divide a multiple-fan network into two components, a fan under consideration and the remaining network that contains all the other elements (branches, regulators and remaining fans) of the network. Quartz is the second most widely used electronic material, with approximately 3,000 t (3,300 st) of single crystals used each year. Most of the quartz used in electronics is synthetic and is manufactured using a technique called hydrothermal growth. This paper reviews the basics of hydrothermal growth, the feedstocks used for these crystals and the challenges to improving the growth process. This paper also reviews the processing of these crystals, the markets and applications where they are used, and the global outlook for these markets.

In a dispersion of particles in liquid a net charge will develop at the particle-liquid interface. This surface charge is usually due to the adsorption of charged material from solution. The existence of this surface charge gives rise to the formation of the electric double layer of counter-ions which surrond the charged particle. The particle surface charge and the electrostatic repulsion which exists between similarly charged particles is the primary stabilization mechanism for lyophobic colloids (1). The separation of charge which occurs at the particle-liquid interface gives rise to several dynamic phenomena associated with colloidal systems or with solid-liquid interfaces in general. These phenomena are known as electrokinetic phenomena and the four classic electrokinetic phenomena are; electrophoresis, electroosmosis, streaming potential, and sedimentation or Dorn potential. The actual driving force for electrokinetic phenomena is not the surface charge per se, but the charge at the interface between the liquid which is hydrodynamically bound to the particle surface and the bulk fluid. This interface is known as the slipping plane or the plane of shear and the potential at this interface is the zeta potential (2). The factors linking the electrokinetic phenomena is that they involve a relative motion between the liquid and the charged particle or solid surface and the driving force is the zeta potential of the solid. In addition to the four classic electrokinetic phenomena there are two additional electrokinetic effects in disperse systems; the electro-acoustic effects. When an alternating electric field is applied to a cooloidal dispersion the particles will move in the field due to their net zeta potential. If there is a density difference between the particles and the fluid this motion will result in the development of an acoustic wave. The effect was discovered at Matec and has been termed the Electrokinetic Sonic Amplitude or ESA (3). ESA is the pressure amplitude generated by the colloid per unit applied electric field strength and has SI units of pascals per volt per meter. When an alternating pressure field (acoustic wave) is applied to a colloidal dispersion the inverse of the ESA effects occurs. A density difference between the disperse phase and the continuous phase leads to a relative motion between the particles and the surrounding liquid. This means that there will be a periodic displacement between the charged particle and the oppositely charged counter-ions in the electric double year. This displacement results in the development of an alternating dipole moment at the frequency of the applied field. This effect is termed the Ultrasonic Vibration Potential or UVP and was first predicted for electrolyte solutions by Debye in 1933 (4). UVP is measured in units of volts per unit velocity amplitude of the applied acoustic field or volts per meter per second. In 1938, Rutgers (5) and Hermans (6) pointed out that the effect would also be present in colloidal dispersions. A detailed theory for UVP effects in colloids, also called CVP, was first presented by Enderby in 1951 (7). Extensive studies of the UVP in electrolytes have been carried out by Yeager et al (8). Recently, O'Brien (9) has developed a general theoretical treatment of electro- acoustic effects in colloids and has derived a reciprocal relation linking ESA and CVP effects. The most commonly studied electrokinetic phenomena is electrophoresis. Electrophoresis is the movement of charges particles in an applied electric field. The velocity of the particle divided by the applied electric field strength is the electrophoretic mobility of the particle. The zeta potential can be calculated from this mobility (2). The magnitude of both the ESA and CVP effects are directly proportional to the electrophoretic mobility of the particles. The mobility determined by the two electro-acoustic effects is the dynamic or AC mobility of the particles.

INTRODUCTION In 1974 two of the present authors reported the results of a pilot study indicating an increase of lung cancer risk in Ontario uranium miners. (Muller, Wheeler, 1973, 1974) The study was based on data contained in a computerized Mining Master File maintained by the Ontario Workmen's Compensation Board that contained information on miners examined in Ontario who had either 60 months of dust exposure in mines or had signs of pneumoconiosis or tuberculosis. Including the above conditions the definition of uranium miners added the condition of one month or more of uranium mining experience in Ontario. This list of Ontario uranium miners contained 8,649 names. Following the results of this first pilot study, we embarked on creating a file of uranium miners containing information on men with one month or more of uranium mining experience in Ontario without any further conditions. This file was used by the Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines in their study of risk in Ontario uranium miners. (Hewitt 1976) This file contained 15,094 names. In this report we give an outline and progress report on a study of Ontario miners that we are conducting at present. It was felt that the male population of Ontario is not necessarily an adequate control population for uranium miners. A preliminary examination of the work history of uranium miners indicated that the majority of them (about 90 percent) had other mining experience in addition to their exposure in uranium mines. We therefore considered it useful to evaluate the possible effects of non-uranium mining on risk, and for this reason decided to make the Uranium Miners Study part of a study dealing with the mortality of Ontario miners in general. Aims of the Study The aims of the Study include the evaluation of: 1) the risk of dying by cause in non-uranium miners as compared to the male population of Ontario and Northern Ontario. 2) any differences that might exist in the death experience of non-uranium miners by cause according to ore mined. 3) the effect of length of exposure in non-uranium mines on age-specific risk by cause. 4) the dose-response function for primary cancer of the trachea, bronchus and lung from exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters. 5) the possible effect of the mining environment on deaths from causes other than cancer of the trachea, bronchus and lung. The study will address itself to a number of other factors that might well affect the dose-response function. These include: a) factors in the mine environment - other than radon daughters - that might affect lung cancer mortality. b) the effect of non-uranium mining on lung cancer risk in uranium miners. c) the effect of age as well as age at time of exposure on lung cancer risk. d) questions of latency and the possible dependence of latency on age at time of exposure. e) smoking as an important factor in lung cancer risk. f) Histological type of cancer in relation to the various parameters of exposure and age. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Study is making use of existing computerized data files and has set up certain new files. These include the Mining Master File and the Model Development File. The Mining Master File This file is a computerized record of data on individual miners obtained at yearly miners' examinations that have been carried out since the mid 1920's. The conditions for inclusion in the Mining Master File have been indicated above. Information contained in the file includes: (1) Identifying information: a) Surname and given names b) Date and place of birth c) Miners Certificate Number d) Social Insurance Number if available. (2) Updated Employment data obtained at each miner's examination: a) Year of first dust exposure in Ontario b) Year of first dust exposure outside Ontario c) Number of months worked in mining d) Ores mined e) Mining areas and mines f) Occupations
