Although the quantity of native sulphur associated with volcanism is large, production from such deposits represents only a very small percentage of total world production, This paper describes the location of the known deposits, the typical geology of these deposits and the nature of the sulphur mineralization. Methods of treatment are discussed and some comments are offered on the economic position of these occurences in world sulphur markets.

Downhill, or regenerative conveyors have always been a challenge to the design engineer due to their natural instability under load. The last decade has seen the appearance of high tonnage, high negative lift conveyors with several hundred meters of drop. These conveyors have made necessary the development of new braking systems and intelligent drive controls to address their starting and stopping requirements under various load conditions. This paper describes the critical design criteria of large regenerative conveyors and some of the advances in mechanical braking systems and drive control technology developed by Conveyor Dynamics, Inc. (CDI) to address their specific requirements.

Early disseminated copper mineralization at Quebrada Blanca, Chile, accompanied 38 million year old quartz monzonite stocks and dikes. Early mineralization was followed by hydrothermal mineralization, mineralized breccias, and post-mineral faulting. After supergene leaching and enrichment, Quebrada Blanca was buried under late Tertiary gravels, and then partially re- exposed in Quaternary time. Based on work to date the orebody appears to contain more than one hundred million tons of plus one percent secondarily enriched copper ore, overlying several hundred million tons of protore averaging more than 0.5% copper. A source of industrial water appears to have been located. Pilot scale metallurgical tests, mine planning, and feasibility studies are in progress.

Buttressing is a widely employed control measure for mitigating slope failure in various settings such as openpit mines, road sections, dams, and hilly or rocky terrains. This paper presents a study on the effects of buttressing, specifically concerning slide-head toppling failure. Drawing insights from a case study of slide-head toppling in Zambia, our investigation employs both analytical (limit equilibrium) and numerical (3DEC software) modeling techniques. The analytical and numerical models exhibit notable similarities in their schematics and overall results, revealing a subtle effect of buttressing in controlling slide-head toppling failure. This study contributes valuable insights into the nuanced role of buttressing in slope stability, with implications for optimizing buttress design parameters. While the overall findings suggest a modest influence of buttressing on slide-head toppling failure, further discussions delve into the specific implications and potential refinements for practical applications.

A conventional paddle-type mixer and a gravity-flow mixing device were evaluated for conditioning of fine phosphate feed (- 35 + 150 mesh) with fatty acid and fuel oil, and for acid scrubbing prior to cationic flotation. Gravity-flow mixing re- quired less residence time but slightly higher reagent concentrations to achieve recovery levels similar to conventional conditioning. Grade was less sensitive to reagent concentration using the gravity-flow mixer. For acid scrubbing, the gravity-flow mixer proved equally effective. In this paper, the effect of time, pulp density, reagent concentration, and emulsification on conditioning and acid scrubbing efficiency of the two devices is discussed.

Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) is conventionally used in gold processing operations when preg robbing components are present in the ore. CIL process is becoming attractive even in other situations when preg robbing is not a factor. This paper discusses the situations in which the CIL circuit can be applied. The results of Leach/CIP and CIL circuits at Newmont's Mill No.2, 4 and 5 are presented for comparison. Newmont's Mill No. 4 was initially designed for a throughput of 4500 tons per day. The mill is presently operating at an average throughput of 7300 tons per day without significant changes to the original design. The design considerations of the Mill No.4 CIL circuit are discussed.

The Archean ores of Western Australia are in total the largest producers of gold in Australia. In addition to numerous small and medium sized deposits, the province also contains the giant Kalgoorlie Golden Mile deposits. A variety of different gold ore mineralogical associations has lead to the development of a number of different processing routes for both refractory and non-refractory ore types. Intense weathering and lateritization of Archean greenstones in the semi-arid Yilgarn region have resulted in the development of a deeply oxidized profile (60-100m) above most sulphide orebodies. Residual and re-deposited supergene gold within iron oxide/silica gangue of this zone responds well to CIP, CIL, heap and vat leaching techniques. Although gold is easily liberated in principal from oxidized gangue, in practice recoveries are sometimes affected by iron oxide coatings on gold grains, and by clay minerals which can interfere with plant performance. Refractory ore types in the Eastern Goldfields fall into three main categories - pyritic, arsenopyritic and telluride-bearing. Pyritic ores may be either free milling or require roasting. The difference appears to depend largely on whether gold occurs along grain boundaries or fractures, which can be liberated by grinding, or whether gold occurs as inclusions within pyrite grains and therefore cannot be satisfactorily liberated by grinding. Arsenopyrite bearing ores are not well understood and are complicated by what appears to be a variable degree of gold solid solution, in addition to included gold. Gold occurring in complex gold-silver telluride assemblages has traditionally been recovered by roasting in the Eastern Goldfields.

"Chicago’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is a nearly $4.0 billion and over 30 years long program and arguably the largest and longest combined sewer tunnel and reservoir system in the world. Recently, a massive tunnel construction is underway for connection of the McCook Reservoir to the existing TARP tunnel system. Once completed in two stages in 2017 and 2019, the reservoir will hold 38 billion-liters (10 billion-gallons) of combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flood waters from the city of Chicago and over 20 communities in Cook County, Illinois. McCook Main Tunnel will connect Chicago TARP’s Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir. Connecting two 10-meter (33-ft) diameter tunnels at 92 meters (300 feet) underground has not been a simple task for the McCook Tunnel Project participants, the project owner U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), local sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, designer Black & Veatch, and the contractor, Kiewit Infrastructure Company (Kiewit). Yet alone excavating and lining massive size tunnels, the team is also challenged with live tunnel conditions in TARP Mainstream Tunnel that carries CSO and flood flows from city of Chicago which runs full during rain events and must remain in service at all times. The project is a noteworthy feat for engineering and construction with the upcoming installation of world’s largest underground wheel gates for flow control within the tunnel. In this paper, we describe one of its kind elements of this major tunnel system along with key design and construction considerations, specifically for the live tunnel connection which is a rare occurrence in the tunneling industry. INTRODUCTION The McCook Main Tunnel system consists of a 10 m (33 ft) finished diameter and 490 m (1,600 ft) long hard rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5 m (90 ft) diameter and 92 m (300 ft) deep main gate and tunnel construction access shaft. The gate shaft houses six high head 4.4 m by 9 m (14.5 ft by 29.5 ft) wheel gates to be installed in the bifurcated and steel lined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir."

"Pumping backfilling medium used to fill in holes and caverns in mines is challenging. The often viscous, high solids materials are extremely abrasive and can destroy pumping systems in a matter of days. While a number of options are available, using a progressing cavity pump can often be the best solution. High pressure and capacity capabilities, coupled with low wear rates, ensures reliable cost effective operation.Thickened slurry backfilling for underground/excavation mining applicationsVoids and caverns develop as a result of mining operations penetrating deep into the earth seeking natural resources. After extracting all the ore from a mine, operators need to fill in these voids to preserve the integrity of the mine structure. They do this by pumping in a backfill medium. Each mine uses a different mix of components for backfilling, depending upon the mine’s specific structural requirements and environmental concerns, particularly water requirements. Most backfill mixes contain cement, or another cement-like substance, that acts as a binder to hold the backfill medium together. This is combined with tailings (unused rocks and waste from processing and/or extraction), and may also include chemicals or other binders to increase the material’s strength.Backfill pumping challengesPumping the backfilling medium can be a significant undertaking. This process involves transporting very viscous and high solid materials; the mix may contain 60-80 percent solids. These backfill slurries are extremely abrasive and the viscous material can wreak havoc with pumping systems. The material’s paste-like consistency presents problems for standard centrifugal pumps often used in other mining applications.Added complexity is posed when trying to achieve the required pressure, which depends upon how far away the material has to be pumped. It is not difficult to meet the pressure requirements if mixing the backfill material close to the area to be filled. However, pumping from extreme distances can be problematic — a great deal of pressure is required to transport the material from the mixing area to a distant backfilling site. Ideally, operators should be as close as possible to where they are filling, so they can use a smaller pump with lower power requirements."

The purpose of this paper is to describe the geology and the modelling work carried out to date. The Lisheen Zinc-Lead deposit was discovered in April, 1990. The deposit comprises two stratiform sulphide orebodies, hosted within the Lower Carboniferous Waulsortian limestone formation. The fully diluted geological resource is 22.5 Mt @ 13.02% Zn and 2.19% Pb, based on a total of 548 diamond drill-boles and 10,998 sampled core intersections. Due to the absence of a geological marker it was necessary to apply economic criteria to define and model the resource envelope. In common with other drill-hole geological databases, the establishment of a workable geological model presents unique challenges.

The integrity of unconventional shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine could be jeopardized by longwall-induced deformations. Under such scenarios, the surrounding fracture networks could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine, creating safety concerns. To provide recommendations for developing guidelines that ensure a safe coexistence of longwall mining and unconventional shale gas production, this study uses a discrete fracture network (DFN) model to evaluate the impact of parameters that could affect potential shale gas flow into the mine in the event of a casing breach. These parameters are evaluated using a conceptualized DFN realization that is representative of the fractured zone in the overburden, and the range of parameter variations are within values validated with field measurements.

There are many concepts of preventative maintenance. The basic objective of all maintenance organization, however, is the efficient (accomplishment and control of all) inspection, repair, overhaul, material and preventative maintenance functions necessary to maintain facilities and equipment in a condition that will meet operating requirements at a level consistent with low costs and high availability. To formulate a preventative maintenance program requires sound judgment and the ability to apply in a practical manner a system that meets Plant operation requirements, based upon organization, experience, conditions, design and historical data. A maintenance program must be divided into to categories consisting of: 1. Scheduled tasks to be accomplished at planned intervals. The objective of these tasks is to maintain reliability and prevent as much as possible abnormal failures. 2. Non-scheduled tasks that result from periodic reports and which can be scheduled to fit in conveniently with other routine work. The non-scheduled work items may include long-range preparation for lenghty shutdowns requiring Engineering and Shop services.

Geological remote sensing is, "....the study of the Earth utilizing electro-magnetic radiation (EMR) which is either reflected or emitted from the land surface in wavelengths ranging from ultra-violet (0.3 micrometre) to microwave (3 metre)."1 Selected examples which illustrate a variety of successful geologic applications include lithologic mapping, 2 engineering soils mapping,3 tectonic interpretation,4 and mineral and petroleum exploration.5 This report examines the applicability of remote sensing for bauxite exploration in northeastern Mississippi. Specific objectives were to map lithologies of northeastern Mississippi from LANDSAT imagery, to determine the utility of LANDSAT imagery for delineating and mapping known deposits of bauxite, and to discover and map new bauxite deposits.

The principles of quality management are well developed and, from a practical stand- point, thoroughly implemented in the process industries of Japan. Although these principles are now applied to the U.S. manufacturing industry, and as a result, the steel industry, they have been largely ignored in the non-ferrous and precious metals industries. This paper presents the concepts and practical approaches to implement a total quality management program. Contrary to the beliefs of many managers, such a program increases yields, recoveries and output while it decreases unit costs. In fact, quality management incorporating statistical process control will be an essential ingredient for metallurgical plants to effectively compete in the '90's.

"The mining industry suffers from a number of incorrect perceptions, one of which is that it is an outdated industry that has not changed for hundreds of years. But the truth of the matter is that mining is a vibrant, highly complex industry that not only employs highly skilled and educated professionals but is also often on the cutting edge of technology. It is an industry with projects that are ever-evolving and among the most challenging engineering feats in the world.Take for instance the U.S. 53 Highway Relocation project in Virginia, MN. While more of a civil engineering job than a traditional mining project, it is still a complex engineering challenge taking place in a mining environment that has called on the skills of eight state agencies, three federal agencies, a host of contractors and many consultants, including many from the local mining industry in the Iron Range of Minnesota.In 1960, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) constructed U.S, Highway 53 on a private easement owned by US Steel that cut across a massive taconite deposit. MnDOT constructed the highway with the agreement that if the highway needed to be moved to access the taconite deposit before 1987, US Steel would foot the bill. And if the move was required after 1987, the responsibility would fall to MnDOT. In 2010, MnDOT received the notice that the highway would have to move as property owner United Taconite planned to access the ore, setting in motion one of the greatest engineering challenges, and the highest risk project, in the history of the states’ transportation department.Pat Huston, U.S. Highway 53 Relocation project manager, opened the 90th SME Minnesota Section Conference in Duluth, MN on April 19 with a presentation about the project that includes 5 km (3.2 miles) of fourlane highway and a new 345-m (1,132-ft) bridge that will be the tallest in Minnesota when it is completed later this year.“This project was not business as usual,” Huston told the packed crowd. “Highway 53 connects Canada and the Iron Range to Duluth and Lake Superior. Prior to 1971, there were several clinical trials to evaluate programs for early detection of lung cancer. Among these, the Philadelphia Pulmonary Neoplasm Research Project,(3) the Veterans Administration Study published by Lilienfeld,(7) and the controlled trial of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan showed an overall five year survival rate of 8% for newly detected cases (the same as the national statistic for unscreened patients). In 1971, the National Cancer Institute initiated three randomized, controlled mortality studies using lung cancer screening of persons at high risk (male smokers over 45 years old). The studies are being conducted at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The studies have slightly different designs in the combination of sputum cytology and chest x-rays. At the Mayo Clinic the study group is offered screening with sputum cytology and chest x-rays every four months, whereas the control group is advised to have an x-ray and cytology every year. No reminders are sent, and it is believed that only about 20% of the control group is screened. At Johns Hopkins and Memorial, both experimental and control groups are offered annual chest x-rays. The experimental group is additionally offered sputum cytology every four months.(5) At present all of the programs show that screening can detect cancers that are undetectible by other means. However, at this time mortality rates in the control and experimental groups are not significantly different in any of the three studies. OUR PROGRAM Our clinic is located in Grants, New Mexico and we provide most of the pre-employment physical examinations for the mines operating in the Grants area (Kerr McGee Nuclear, Homestake Mining, United Nuclear, Western Nuclear, and Ranchers). In the examinations, we obtain the previous mining history of the worker, a chest x-ray, a sample of sputum for cytological examination, and a blood sample. We also provide routine annual physical examinations of the workers, with special interest in the detection of bronchogenic carcinoma. In the early seventies, we did not have a definite surveillance program. We did not know whether we should have a program like the one started at Memorial or like the one started at the Mayo Clinic. After long consideration, we decided to have a program that does not demand a sputum cytology and chest x-ray every four months, but that allows as many chest x-rays and sputum cytologies as needed to diagnose lung cancer as early as possible. We believe that, if a screening method for cancer is to be optimally effective, it must detect the process at stages early enough for curative therapy. We order a test depending on the age of the miner, the race, the mining history, the smoking history, the radiation exposure levels, and the results of the previous chest x-ray and sputum cytology. With the help of the computer, we have a list of all the miners who should be watched closely because of age, race, mining history, smoking history, radiation exposure, etc. Examination of the miners is performed at our clinic, where all the records are kept. The sputum is collected there but examined in Grand Junction, Colorado, by Dr. Geno Saccomanno. There are two ways to collect sputum. The best way is to collect three consecutive morning samples. For this, we need the cooperation of the miners. They have to follow these instructions and mail the bottle containing the sample to Grand Junction. "Instructions for obtaining a good cough specimen" The enclosed plastic bottle contains a preservative solution, so do not empty out the liquid in it. When you go to bed, place the plastic bottle at your bedside where it will be handy in the morning. When you first get up in the morning (before breakfast) try to cough up some "phlegm" from deep in your chest, and spit it into the liquid in the bottle. Try coughing several times. If you have difficulty coughing, try inhaling deeply the steam from a teakettle (or home-type inhalator). Keep the amount of saliva (ordinary spit) that you put into the bottle along with the cough specimen as small as possible. Do not collect the "phlegm" or mucous that comes from the back of your nose. Put the cap back on the bottle, and shake it vigorously for two minutes. If the amount of material you have coughed up is quite small, then keep the bottle at your bedside for three or four days, and each morning try to add another cough specimen. After obtaining your cough specimen, repack the bottle in the mailing container, and attach the enclosed mailing label. It does not require any postage stamps. Unfortunately, some miners "forget" to mail the sample and end up with an incomplete physical examination. To avoid this some companies, like Homestake, request that we obtain the sample in our clinic by forcing cough and expectorant with a nebulizer machine. This method does not give as good a sputum sample as the previous one, but we do get a sputum sample for every miner. "During the excavation of the north bound tunnel of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel project, deformation (convergence) was measured after passing through Fault Zone B. The tunnel convergence was not symmetrical, but was larger on the left side of the profile. It was determined that a shear zone nearly parallel with the tunnel drive was contributing to the uneven deformation. This paper will discuss how it was determined that the shear zone existed and how multi-point borehole Extensometers (MPBX) were used to verify that a significant amount of the deformation was occurring due to movement along the shear zone as the excavation was advanced. In addition, performance of the shotcrete liner in the area of the convergence will be examined. Finally, the paper will consider the means and methods that were utilized to ultimately control and stabilize the deformation. INTRODUCTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnel Project consisted of excavating two 1,250 meter tunnels each with a profile of 80 m2 utilizing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) or otherwise known as the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The tunnels are part of the California Coastal Highway south of Pacifica, CA, a suburb of San Francisco. The tunnels were opened to traffic in March of 2013. Geological Setting The tunnels run north-south through the San Pedro Mountain ridge, which is part of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The tunnel lies within the San Andreas Fault system and is 7.2 km west of the surface trace of the San Andreas Fault and 2.8 km east of the surface trace of the San Gregorio Fault. The 10 km strip between these two faults is referred to as the La Honda structural and terrain block (Decker et al. 2010; Amini et al. 2005; Earth Mechanics Inc. 2003). Locally, the tunnel passes through three blocks representing different geological conditions: South Block, Central Block, and North Block (Figure 1) (Decker et al. 2010; HNTB Corporation et al. 2005). The South Block consists of Mesozoic aged granodiorite and quartz diorite. The South Block also contains many local shear zones and a low angle thrust fault (Fault A). The South Block ends at Fault B, which is the southern border of the Central Block."

Mine ventilation simulation software has become an essential tool for the mining industry to design and manage mine ventilation operations. Building a well-calibrated mine ventilation network is time consuming, however, and requires great effort. In the last several decades, the mining industry has seen a steady increase in the use of air velocity sensors to monitor airflow and detect unexpected abnormal airflow in some key locations in underground mines. The present research work was carried out to explore the possibility and methodology of calibrating a ventilation network model using atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) data on a routine and ongoing basis.

The semi-autogenous grinding circuit at the Utah Mines Limited, Island Copper Operation, located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is described. Since start-up of the operation in 1971 grinding circuit throughput has been progressively increased from the initial design rate of 30,000 to the current average 45,000 tonnes per day (t/d) of porphyry copper ore. Key developments and modifications in operating and maintenance practice that have contributed to this increase are reviewed.
