The Zoro pegmatite project in east-central Manitoba occurs 20 km east of the historic mining town of Snow Lake. A composite sample (Master Comp) was prepared fromthree pegmatite zones within Zoro Dyke “D1” including the North, Central, and South Zones for mineralogical analysis and heavy liquid separation (HLS). The mineralogical examination was conducted on a subsample crushed to ca. P80 of 600 μm to determine the overall mineral assemblage, liberation of spodumene, and assess the potential recovery of spodumene by flotation. XRD and QEMSCAN results show that the sample consists of spodumene (10.5%), quartz (29.3%), plagioclase (29.0%), K-feldspars (21.3%), micas (5.1%), tourmaline (2.9%), and Fe-Mn-phosphates (0.1%). Spodumene is well liberated (88%), but also forms complex particles (7%), and middlings with quartz (4%). Liberation of spodumene increases from 81 in the + 600 μm to 95%in the − 106 μm size fraction. Liberation of quartz, feldspars, and micas account for 89%, 94%, and 83%, respectively. Electron probe micro-analyses and LA-ICP-MS showed that the average Li concentration is 3.7% in spodumene, 2196 ppm in micas, 1001 ppm in tourmaline, and 115 ppm in K-feldspars. Thus, spodumene accounts for 96%, micas 2%, Fe-Mn phosphates 1%, and both K-feldspars and tourmaline for < 1% of the total Li in the sample. The mineralogical data indicate the potential to recover spodumene by flotation with minimal Li losses due to other than spodumene carriers. Heavy liquid separation was conducted on the Master Comp which was crushed to − 6.4 mm, while the − 600 μmfractionwas removed fromthis test. The coarse fraction − 6.4mm/+ 600 μmwas subjected to HLS tests with eight heavy liquid-specific gravity cut-points (2.65 to 3.10 g/cm3). HLS indicates that it is possible to produce a high-grade lithium concentrate (close to 6% Li2O) after the rejection of iron silicates with magnetic separation.

Sensors are everywhere in the mining industry, with sensor information being used to monitor and operate processes. Therefore, when sensor information is wrong, economic losses can occur. Unfortunately, sensor errors are usually not detected till they become large. This is problematic as most calibrate their sensors no more than once a year (Beamex, n.d.). Using principles of data mining, where all relevant information is tapped to glean hidden information, Pothina [8] designed an algorithm to detect errors in temperature sensors in gold stripping circuit in Pogo mine, Alaska. This paper continued his work by analyzing the behavior of the algorithm on baseline data and testing the algorithm in new data and under more rigorous conditions. It also made a change to the algorithm. The modified algorithm performed very well in the new data. It also worked well under the new error conditions. Three types of errors were seeded, a fixed additive error (+ 2%), a fixed subtractive error (− 2%), and a noisy, normally distributed error, with a mean value of + 2%. Artificially seeded errors were detected within about 20 gold stripping cycles. Inherent bias in operation impacted algorithm performance by increasing the number of cycles needed to detect errors. This paper reinforced Pothina’s [8] conclusion that when data mining approach is used, sensor errors can be detected even when they are pretty low. Significant economic losses can thus be minimized.

Haul truck capacities have increased due to their economies of scale in large-scale surface mines. These high-capacity trucks impose dynamic loads on haul roads. A previous study estimated the dynamic forces imposed by ultra-large trucks on haul roads to be more than three times the static load. These dynamic forces exacerbate haul road stresses and deformation. Current haul road response models are 2D and use static truckloads for low-capacity trucks. No models capture the ultra-large truck dynamic effects on haul road structural response. This study uses 3D finite element (FE) modeling to compute the haul road response to ultra-large truck dynamic loading. The dynamic forces were modeled using multibody dynamics (MBD) in MSC.ADAMS. These forces were used in an FE model developed, verified, and validated in ABAQUS, to simulate the response of the haul road to the dynamic truck forces. The road was modeled using an elastoplastic Mohr-Coulomb model. The results showed that road deformation decreases with increasing layer modulus and increases with increasing payload. Increasing the base modulus from 100 MPa to 450 MPa reduced the maximum deformation from 258 mm to 62 mm. When the subbase elastic modulus increased from 100 MPa to 500 MPa, the maximum deformation decreased from 160 mm to 84 mm. Increasing the payload from 0 to 120% of the rated load increased the maximum wearing surface deformation from 131 mm to 216 mm. This study forms a basis for designing structurally competent haul roads for improving haulage efficiency and truck and operator health.

Since the mid 60&apos;s, several haul cycle simulation programs have been developed. However, most of these programs are believed to employ the continuous, rather than the discrete, event-oriented simulation approach to determine the haul cycle times. This paper describes the recently developed haul cycle simulation approach where time is advanced in varying amounts only as the system changes occur. This approach results in greater computational accuracy and increased computational efficiency. The program is written in FORTRAN and requires equipment performance curve and haul road profiles as input. Unique program capabilities include the handling of switchbacks and intersections. The program uses a master data file concept in which various haul road profiles found during the mine life can be simulated all in one job submission. The results of the model validation using the actual time study data provided by an open pit mine operator near Tucson, Arizona, are also described in this paper.

The Chino Mines Company, a Kennecott-Mitsubishi partnership, located in Hurley, New Mexico, recently completed a $405 million modernization of its mine, concentrator, and smelter facilities. The mine/ concentrator modernization commenced in 1980 and the smelter modernization began during 1982. Modernization of the mine and concentrator facilities involved increasing the mining rate from 98 kt/d (108,000 stpd) to 152.2 kt/d (167,800 stpd). Ore mining was designed to increase production from 20.2 kt/d (22,300 stpd) to 34.0 kt/d (37,500 stpd). A new concentrator was constructed near the mine using semi-autogenous grinding. The new smelter uses the INCO flash smelting process, increasing capacity by 40.8 kt/a (45,000 stpy) to 99.8 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of salable copper.

The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in&apos; the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology has been evaluated to replace tertiary cone crushing at Coeur Rochester operations (Coeur Rochester, Inc.) as an opportunity to improve silver recovery. In 2016 and 2017, onsite and third-party pilot programs were initiated to evaluate the impact of metallurgical recovery and heap leach performance of crushed product generated by an HPGR. In 2018, Forte Dynamics evaluated the HPGR laboratory metallurgical data from Coeur Rochester and all third parties to develop field-scale leach curves based on new crushing scenarios. The laboratory recovery test work data was consolidated and scaled to field conditions to determine projected heap leach performance. Based on the metallurgical testing conducted, the replacement of current tertiary cone crushers with HPGR technology has the potential to increase Coeur Rochester’s silver recovery rate by 8%, from 61% to 69%, and shorten the overall timing of silver recoveries from 20 years to just over two years. INTRODUCTION The Rochester mine, and associated valley fill heap leach facilities is an open-pit silver and gold mine located in Pershing County, Nevada, approximately 26 miles northeast of the city of Lovelock. In 2017, Rochester produced approximately 4.7M troy oz silver (Ag) and 51k troy oz gold (Au). Ore mined at Rochester is either fed directly to the primary X-Pit crusher, crushed at an in-pit crusher system, or placed directly onto a heap leach pad as run-of-mine (ROM). Both crushing circuits are comprised of three stages of crushing to produce a nominal 3/8” ore. Primary crushing consists of jaw crushing while secondary and tertiary crushing are composed of varying cone crushers. Historical recovery rates of crushed Rochester ore average 61.4% Ag and 95.9% Au over a period of 20 years [1]. These rates were derived from third party verification of in-house metallurgical test results, crusher production and heap leach production results from 1986 through 2004 in a private report for Rochester produced by KD Engineering Co., Inc. Recovery rates are regularly verified by compositing daily samples of ore delivered to each leach pad from the X-pit crusher, in-pit crusher, and/or ROM. A proportionate split of each sample is used to generate monthly composites for metallurgical analysis utilizing column leaching and bottle roll leaching. These tests are run in a manner analogous with production conditions and deliver test results that provide expected heap leach performance. As the Rochester oxide deposit has been mineralogically and metallurgically consistent, the gold and silver recovery trends have also been consistent over the life of the project. In 2016 and 2017, onsite and third-party pilot programs were initiated to evaluate the impact of HPGR technology to metallurgical recovery and heap leach performance of crushed product in an open circuit configuration, as a potential replacement for the currently in place tertiary cone crushers. During these years, HPGR was evaluated in three phases of test work.

In recent years, coal mining safety has attained national attention due to several highly publicized disasters. Despite these threats to worker safety and health, the U.S. relies on the mining of coal to meet its need for electrical power, with 42% of electricity in the U.S. generated through the burning of coal (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012b; United Mine Workers of America, n.d.). Furthermore, the production of coal continues to increase and reach record levels every year (National Mining Association, 2012; U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2012a). For this reason, the coal mining industry must continue to find ways to protect its workers while maintaining productivity. One potential approach to protecting workers while maintaining productivity is through improving the safety culture at coal mines. In order to achieve this culture, operators, employees, the inspectorate, etc. must share a fundamental commitment to safety as a value. This type of culture is known in other industries as a ?safety culture,? and can be defined as the characteristics of the work environment (such as the norms, rules, and common understandings) that influence facility personnel?s perceptions of the importance that the organization places on safety. Fundamental to improving safety culture within an organization is understanding the existing safety culture; improvements cannot be made without first elucidating areas that require improvement. This manuscript details the process undertaken by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) to assess the safety culture at five underground coal mines across the United States. The purpose of this manuscript is to present the aggregated results from those five safety culture assessments conducted at underground coal mines. Additionally, some general recommendations for areas where coal mines might focus their attention as part of their attempts to improve safety culture are offered.

During 1963 more than 200 million tons of coal was consumed by the public utility industry. Ash residual, from the burning of this coal has caused disposal problems. In order to prevent air pollution, dust collection systems have been installed to suppress the fine ash emitted from boilers before it is discharged into the atmosphere. The collected ash, called fly ash, must be removed from the dust collection facilities and disposed in some manner, usually at a substantial cost to the utility. Many years ago fly ash disposal was not a serious problem because the demand for power was relatively low and coarse coal was burned on stoker type traveling grate machines. The low burning rates utilized on these grates did not produce large quantities of air-borne coal ash while the mechanics of this system of burning resulted in a clinkered residue of cinders. Both of these conditions resulted in the production of only small quantities of fly ash. As the demand for electricity increased, a method of burning pulverized coal was developed and was introduced to the public utility industry in 1918 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin.1 This method of firing was considered a significant advance in steam electric generation as it (1) permitted the use of coals that could not be economically fired by other methods and (2) has generally resulted in improved efficiency, greater generating capacity and lower costs.2 The utilization of larger generating units using pulverized coal substantially increased the quantity of fly ash which resulted in a&apos; more severe disposal problem.

1967 will be remembered as the year the world realized it was running out of silver. In May of this year a new era in tin the history of the white metal was begun as the power of the U.S. Treasury to regulate world .silver markets was staggered by one of the most intense speculative flurries in recent times. In the past few months the price of silver has risen from $1, 29 to over $1.80 per troy ounce and with it have spiraled the prices of a host of silver-bearing consumer items. Legislation has, been enacted to conserve our coinage and meager silver stocks and today large quantities of non-existent silver are trading hands at a fast pace on the commodity exchanges throughout the world. Now that the price of silver has been set loose, forces are in motion to dull the world&apos;s appetite for silver. At the same time there is strong incentive to provide greater quantities of silver to satisfy the world&apos;s hunger&apos; for the metal.

In a mineral processing plant there are a number of routine decisions which are based at least in part on the plant&apos;s metallurgical performance. Among these are those related to: 1) equipment functioning properly 2) suitable operating conditions 3) reagents achieving desired results 4} determining operating response to changes in ore 5) defining circuits offering potential for improvement A step beyond the routine, are the periodic management evaluations of operating supervision and technical assistance, which are based largely on profit -a direct function of are availability, metallurgical performance and operating costs. The "yardstick", excuse me -"meterstick", by which performance is best measured is the plant metallurgical balance, which tells not only what was produced but how it was produced. Since this metallurgical balance is directly related to both plant profits and individual rewards, it is only reasonable to make that "meterstick" as precise as humanly possible.

No commodity agreements now exist for sulfur and a lack of reference to sulfur commodity agreements exists in the literature. Law (1975) made a passing reference to sulfur as one of a group of commodities where "there have been additional control efforts of various types." Clearly, sulfur was a candidate, at least conceptually in the past, for some form of commodity agreement and the following discussion centers on the world sulfur market of the early 1980&apos;s in this context. GENERAL THEORY OF COMMODITY AGREEMENTS The upsurge in demands for commodity agreements seen in the last decade or so stems largely from agitation by the less developed countries (LDC) for better economic treatment by more developed countries (MDC). Several economic factors, real or imagined, adversely affect the LDC&apos;s as follows (MacAvoy, 1977): 1) variable demand in MDC&apos;s causes wide fluctuations in commodity prices which hurt the economies of commodity producers, who are often LDC&apos;s although consumer economies may also benefit from more predictable prices; 2) a general decline of commodity prices relative to the price of manufactured goods which hurts commodity producers in their balance of trade while their stocks and overcapacity rise; 3) instability of LDC economies enhanced by the above factors lowers internal stability, inhibits foreign investment, and retards economic growth; and 4) a lack of self respect when dealing with developed countries o, following the OPEC lead, LDC producers want the stature related to cartel market power.

Kaolin is defined and described as an industrial mineral. In addition the types of deposits -primary and secondary are defined and the genesis of kaolin from feldspars and other minerals discussed. The major deposits of the world found in the United States, Great Britain, Brazil, and Czechoslovakia are described along with many of the minor kaolin deposits. Four areas which have very large deposits of kaolin could, with technological breakthroughs to reduce viscosity significantly, become important factors in supplying the world markets which are increasing year by year.

Rock burst has always been a major problem in deep underground engineering with high stress, and rock burst strength evaluation has become an important research topic. To effectively predict the rock burst hazard in underground rock mass engineering, a cloud model (CM) rock burst intensity evaluation method based on the CRITIC method and order relation analysis method (G1) was proposed in this paper. First, a rock’s uniaxial compressive strength σc, tangential stress σθ, uniaxial tensile strength σt, ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to tensile strength σc/σt (brittleness coefficient), ratio of tangential stress to uniaxial compressive strength σθ/σc (stress coefficient), elastic deformation energy index Wet, and depth of cover H were selected as evaluation indices of rock burst intensity. Ninety-five groups of rock burst measured data at home and abroad were selected, and the objective weight and subjective weight of each index were calculated by using the CRITIC method and G1 method, respectively. The comprehensive weight was determined according to the combined weighting method of game theory, and the sensitivity of each evaluation index was analyzed. By utilizing a forward cloud generator, the membership degrees of different rock burst grades were calculated, and then the rock burst intensity grades of the samples were evaluated and compared with the evaluation results of the CRITIC-CM method and G1-CM method and the actual grades. Finally, the rock burst classification ability of the model was analyzed. To better verify the accuracy and reliability of this model, the rock burst case of the W39 line in the Chengchao Iron Mine was analyzed by using this model. The research results show that the rock burst evaluation results based on CRITIC-G1-CM are basically consistent with the actual rock burst grade, and the rock burst intensity grade evaluation model has good practicability and reliability.

"Lithium is a silver-white alkali metal that has recently become a target commodity for many junior mining companies. Lithium has a wide range of applications including ceramics and glass, lubricating greases, air treatment, continuous cast mold flux powders, polymer production, and primary aluminium production, but the current popularity of lithium can be attributed to an anticipated increase in demand for lithium ion batteries. The most common lithium-bearing minerals occur globally in pegmatites and granites. Spodumene [LiAl(Si2O6)] is the most desirable economic lithium-bearing mineral due to its high lithium content (theoretical Li2O content of about 8 wt%). However, lithium can also be hosted in petalite, micas, tourmaline, and phosphate minerals. In Canada there are a number of spodumene deposits in Ontario and Quebec at development stage that have the potential to help narrow the forecast lithium supply gap stemming from the widespread acceptance and use of electric vehicles. This paper discusses the beneficiation of hard rock lithium deposits, including an in depth review of the use of flotation to upgrade spodumene. A review of the use of dense media separation (DMS), magnetic separation, and roasting as means to process spodumene bearing ores is also discussed. INTRODUCTION Lithium is a soft, silver-white alkali metal with atomic number 3. As of 2015, the end use of lithium was estimated to be as follows: lithium-ion batteries (35%), ceramics and glass (32%), lubricating greases (9%), air treatment (5%), continuous casting mould flux powders (5%), polymer production (4%), primary aluminium production (1%) and other uses (9%) (Jaskula, 2014). Lithium is found in brine lake deposits containing lithium chloride and in hard rock pegmatite deposits. It can be sold in a range of product types; as mineral concentrate, brine, compound (lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide) and metal depending on its intended end use (Goonan, 2012; Jaskula 2014). In the 1990s the United States and Chile were the largest producers of lithium globally, primarily from brine operations (Ober, 1994). Most of the lithium compounds produced over this period were consumed in the glass, ceramics and aluminium industries. In the 1980s and 1990s there were two major lithium operations in the United States: brine operations at Silver Peak, Nevada, and a spodumene mine and lithium carbonate/lithium hydroxide plant in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The Kings Mountain operations ceased production in 1991 and were eventually dismantled in 1994. Brine operations were also active in Argentina and Chile, while the largest lithium ore deposit in the world was operated at Greenbushes, Western Australia. During this period it was predicted that major shifts in demand for lithium would come from the success and widespread use of electric vehicles (Ober, 1994)."

The chemistry of the element uranium enables industry to employ either an acid or alkaline carbonate leach solution for most uranium ores. Either method my be used for conventional, in-situ, or heap leaching. Uranium recovery in the leaching process depends both on the solubility of the uranium minerals and, on the access of the leach reagent to them. The uranium leaching rate is proportional to the liberated mineral surface area and the chemical reactions involved in the dissolution step. The dissolution of U(VI) and the oxidation of u(IV) to U(VI) are the basic chemical reactions in the leaching process. The active surface area is a function of the effective porosity and the particle size of the ore (1). Ore pieces, with a high porosity and high permeability, may provide a large active surface area even in coarser fractions. This type of ore might be suitable for heap or in-situ leaching techniques. Nonporous and impervious ores are usually more amenable to conventional milling where the active mineral surface is exposed by grinding the ore down to the liberation size of the mineral.

This paper summarizes the results of treating arsenic­bearing refractory gold concentrates from six gold Mines of Chi­na by using bioleaching method and discusses the conditions of bioleaching processes. Results indicate that Thiobacillus fer­rooxidans T-3 Strain can intensely oxidize arsenopyrite, how­ever oxidation rate and degree differe considerably for different. During initial inoculation of 5 X 106 cell/ml. FeH contration generaly 4 -8 g/1. Sample size > 80 % - 3 20 mesh and pulp density 10 % ( w /v) and leaching time ,1 -- G clays, arsenic re­moval rate reached more than 80 % , Fe extraction ,10 - GO% desulfurization rate 30-45% after bacterial oxidation of 4-G days.

The North Singhbhum Mobile Belt (NSMB) lies between two crustal-scale shear zones, the South Purulia Shear Zone (SPSZ) at the north, and the Singhbhum Shear Zone (SSZ) at the south. The Babaikundi-Birgaon Axis (BBA) is an east-west trending secondary shear zone in the NSMB lying south of SPSZ, which is known for the occurrence of gold along with other sulfide minerals within the quartz reefs. The present study has been carried out at north of Ichadih village, which lies on the BBA. The present study attempts combined electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential methods along a profile of 470-m length in the Ichadih area to map the potential mineralized zones. Initially, ERT sections generated by Wenner, Wenner- Schlumberger, dipole-dipole, and joint inversion of the combined array have been analyzed, and results are validated through the analysis of model resolution. A prominent low resistivity (10–100 Ωm) associated with quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef at a depth of approximately 30–85 m, encircled by a high resistive (more than 10,000 Ωm) formation associated with metasedimentary rock, has been delineated using joint inversion of the combined array. Further, analysis of self-potential (SP) anomaly using particle swarm optimization inversion also confirms the prominent low SP anomaly at a depth of 77.3 m, which is analogous to the low resistivity anomaly identified in the joint inversion of the combined geo-electric array. Subsequent analysis of a complex synthetic geo-electrical model analogous to the present field situation proves the efficacy of the joint inversion of combined arrays. As a whole, joint inversion of multi-array data is established as an efficient technique for better subsurface imaging in case of the complex subsurface structure. In-depth analyses confirm the possibility of sulfide mineral-rich deposit (quartz reef/limonitic quartz reef) which requires further geological drilling and lithogeochemical sample analysis, for possible future exploration.

"Once every four years, the global mining industry gathers in Las Vegas, NV for MINExpo International. According to the show’s organizer, The National Mining Association (NMA), about 44,000 people attended the three-day show from Sept. 26-29. It was a show that featured the latest and greatest in equipment and technology. It also served as the backdrop for a snapshot of the state of the industry and while the picture of a global industry is never completely clear at any one time, one thing that is evident is technology has become a major force in the way mining is done.Had it not been for the awe-inspiring “iron” that was on the show floor in the form of haul trucks and shovels weighing hundreds of tons, one could be forgiven for thinking that they were at the Consumer Electronics Show. From training simulators designed to give a realistic experience of operating mining equipment to virtual reality technology that can take the user into the depths of an underground mine or the middle of a mapped ore deposit, an overriding theme of MINExpo 2016 was that the mining industry is connected like never before.In the north hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center was the GE Mining booth that was designed to showcase its efforts to help create a mine that will be connected from the front office to the face of the underground wall or bottom of the openpit. GE Mining called its booth a digital mine, and it included a suite of technologies that can improve performance, reliability, safety and operations. GE Mining said it views each mine as a mini-city, requiring power, water and transportation. Intelligent, real-time monitoring across the mine allows operators to make data-driven decisions that improve equipment reliability and optimize mine operations for substantial savings. And GE Mining was just one of many exhibitors showing off software that allows various types of equipment to communicate. Its booth sat in the shadow of the Komatsu booth with its new 360-t (400-st) 980E-4 haul truck that included GE’s 360-t (400-st) electric wheel motor. This is just one example of how technology is connecting machines, operations and people around the world and how mining is moving forward."
