Mining at Vale’s Creighton Mine has been active for nearly 120 years in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Being the deepest mine in the Sudbury region, mining induced seismicity is a common occurrence at Creighton Mine. Over the past five years, 26 large magnitude seismic events ranging from 2.5 Mn to 3.7 Mn (Nuttli) have occurred. Out of these large magnitude events, three 3.0+ Mn events occurred between April 2020 and January 2021. The majority of the 3.0+ Mn events are believed to be the fault-slip type that could be linked to the known major geological structures and/or long-term effect of mining over many years. The recent large magnitude events are believed to be triggered by high induced stresses while mining the first few stopes of a new lower horizon in the top-down centre out mining sequence.

Many mining operations have gained an impressive expertise in trouble shooting and maintenance with their existing fleet over the years. Whether it is an in-house maintenance group or an external service group - most of the systems weak points are well known and can be corrected by maintenance personnel. As some of these issues get more and more serious each year, too much time is lost in unscheduled downtime, often taking hours to be repaired and to find the failure with obsolete diagnostic tools (Fig. 1.). Many of the breakdowns result from failures that cannot be detected in advance. The maintenance system is much more reactive than preventative. The state of the art of mining equipment today uses advanced, efficient, and reliable systems for electrical drives, control and diagnostics of the machines. The demand for highly sophisticated solutions on such mining equipment is well known. Mining operators need to ensure the highest level of productivity, lowest operating costs, least maintenance and highest reliability in a drive system. The paper will introduce you to the state of the art of drives technology for dragline (Fig. 2) and shovel mining equipment (Fig. 3).

The dramatic increase in molybdenum prices from the low of less than $2.50/lb in 1999 to more than $40/lb in 2005 has caught the attention of molybdenum mine owners and exploration project developers. Between 2005 and early 2007, prices pulled back and stabilized within a trading range of $25/lb to $30/lb. This 1,000 percent price increase has motivated most existing producers to expand production and is motivating those with molybdenum prospects to accelerate the development process for earliest possible production. It is still unknown how much new production will come from existing mines, how much production will be needed from new mines if demand continues to grow and how many potential new mines might be available to meet future demand. And of course, the billion dollar question is whether molybdenum prices will remain high, or will they fall back to the low levels seen during the 1980s and 1990s? This article attempts to answer these questions in a way that will help molybdenum project developers and financiers plan for the future.

Large diesel engines provide the mining industry the substantial power and torque needed to move large amounts of material efficiently. But the stresses generated by such power and torque necessitate complex maintenance programs to ensure the utmost operating capabilities are not compromised. Of all its available sensors, the Exhaust Temperature differential between the right and left banks can provide the most valuable indicator of the overall operating condition and potential degradation of a large diesel engine. BHP Billiton Escondida Mining has implemented real-time remote monitoring, diagnostics, reporting, and tracking of Exhaust Temperature differential using Modular® technology. As a result of the processes and procedures put into place surrounding their MineCare maintenance management system, Escondida has proactively replaced over 300 injectors, resulting in an increase of 4% in Engine availability.

If an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM is operated effectively tunneling can be carried out producing negligible ground movements. Using the methods given in this paper face losses of the order of 0.5% and less are generally obtainable using an EPB. Operating the EPB TBM in this manner reduces the requirement for the building protection measures used to protect surface structures. This can result in a considerable cost saving for the construction of a tunnel under built up areas. This paper to give guidance on the causes of ground movements around a TBM and the methods of running an EPB TBM that will minimize those movements. Details of how this was successfully done during the construction of the Bangkok Metro are given. The authors have accumulated published data on residual soil and rock tunnels in the United States and have compared it to transit tunneling experience in Atlanta, Georgia, and tunnels in other soil and rock conditions. Two 6.1 meter (20 foot) diameter shield driven, compressed air tunnels were constructed for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) connecting the Five Points Station (central hub) with the Peachtree Center Station (first station on the north line). Because of the historic multi-story structures above the tunnels and the variety of subsurface conditions, a comprehensive ground monitoring and observation program was conducted. Conclusions are drawn regarding residual soil and rock ground response due to tunneling. Comparisons are made to ground response due to tunneling in other soil and rock conditions.

Without an exclusive definition of administration in business, we could propose to define it as performance by management to adopt or implement established business formulas. Administration could also be defined as a universal process that organizes people, and achieves, through efficiency, common objectives and goals. Humanity developed some form of this process from the beginning of civilization. To imply that something is new in administration might be considered specious or naïve. Moreover, what is new in management? Administration of business is not new to the world. To prove this statement, we need only ask this question: Does the architecture and monumental workmanship of the past civilizations of ancient Egypt, Rome, and the Incas demonstrate management without administration and without definition of objectives? The answer must be a resounding ?NO!? In spite of this acknowledgment and for the purposes of this presentation, I will use the word ?new? in business and hope that the reader will follow my reasoning. The mining industry has unique characteristics in respect to other industries. It is multi-disciplinary, has a single purpose (majority for one metal), has two players (man and nature), and it involves high risks for generating environmental imbalance. Mining exploits non-renewable and finite resources, creates an unstable job market (work hard to have no work) and a speculative economic market with unpredictable prices ? a one-time payment for a finite resource with multiple recycling. On top of all that, the industry still operates within obsolete petroleum-based technology, utilizing practices that were designed two centuries ago. Today, we confront the challenges of the millennium with outmoded practices and management. Ordinarily, several styles of administration are standardized into a FRAGMENTED vertical system of organization. Mining has rigid objectives in production, with profitability as the focus from the beginning to the end. Citing the concept of safety, as an important facet of production is bombastic since, in truth, mining is an experimental industry that consistently reports high numbers of fatal accidents. In mining, we designed a process to work according to our objectives, demanding attention and supervision of all levels of management with a halo of parameters that are not assimilated into the design. We continue to perform a rigid style of management in an industry that is still not responsive to variations of the market ? losses in particular. The existing design process generates loss without capitalization and without response to said loss. This perception is reflected in a mindset that is only too ready to ignore mining liabilities. The reality of the enterprise has created an immense pressure from top to bottom in the hierarchy to do more with less. It is for all of these reasons that I propose to set forth a new essence for administration that encompasses an alternative vision and style in mining: Management by Loss. MANAGEMENT BY LOSS Management by Loss (MBL) is a systematic, integral process organized to quality control operation and the human profitability within the industry. It permits focus on achievable goals by utilizing the best practices (Mining Open-closing). Identification and characterization of loss in the process determine how objectives are defined, controlling the time limits to execute based on constant balance of mass, energy, water, and ?wastes? in each stage of the industry, in order to reach final objectives. The concept of loss can be defined by various criteria. Generally, it is the mass that could not make or arrive at its destination from a designed process or simply, it could not maintain balance. Otherwise, the design of the process describes the final point of the resource. However, those resources could not make their destination because of failure to use the best design, resources and TIME. The loss has typical characteristics such as Identifiable, classifiable, measurable, manageable, controllable, valuables, negotiable, avoidable, reportable, and monitoring. In the traditional scheme, these losses are not registered; they are made exclusions. We are trapped within a system, which was designed to obtain objectives of the industry in a specific timeframe. In the present style of administration, the focus is total - our emphasis in this treatise is in the loss. The current traditional report form contains only the most positive achievement of objectives, only the best of the exercise, humanizing numbers, without touching what we left behind or what we were waiting for to assimilate as a ?surprise account?(new account of liabilities). Management by loss is a method that redefines the concept of waste (waste zero) for controlling the mine operation under the equilibrium of the ecosystems. This method confronts the problems that impact our industry in this millennium. Understanding and quantifying losses (reserves, resources, time, energy, water, soil, materials, equipment, tasks, labor, ecosystems, etc) is a priority mandate for the industry and demands the application of a ?new ? style of administration by seeking to maintain balance instead of the disequilibrium that mining now creates in nature. It is necessary to answer questions such as: How can we minimize loss? How can the loss be assimilated during the life of the mine? What is the vision of mining in respect to the generation of waste? How can we convert liabilities into assets? In addition, the control of loss is determined in the achievement of the plan. Loss occurs because of a failure of the process in the original plan. Still we do not plan to fail but we fail to plan appropriately. It is a remarkable thing to accomplish and compel those objectives described in the original plan when that plan is designed with a determined budget. If not, we lose time and, of course, capital. Moreover, in Management by Loss (MBL), we can find answers to the following questions: What is the multiplier of productivity in mining? What are the influences of identification and characterization of loss and what is the level of efficiency of energy in order to achieve waste zero (effective cut off grade)? The challenges of mining in this millennium validate this new style of administration. Finally, it is important to point out that mining is entering into an era that has different rules, but the industry is still run by companies functioning with objectives from two centuries ago. They are trying to confront issues with concepts that are not designed for new tasks. Therefore, I ask you to consider this new style of administration of business under a vision of how the industry should be organized and managed, with an attitude of balance toward nature and social responsibility.

Diesel fuel fire experiments were conducted in NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory’s (PRL) Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to determine the critical air velocity for preventing smoke rollback. Such information is necessary for the preplanning and implementation of ventilation changes during mine fire fighting and rescue operations. The fire intensity varied from 50 kW to 300 kW depending upon the fuel tray area. Airflow in the 2 m high and 2.9 m wide coal mine entry was regulated during the course of each experiment; measured upwind from the fire as an average over the entry cross-section with an ultrasonic airflow sensor; and recorded dynamically with a mine monitoring system. The extent of smoke reversal was monitored with light obscuration monitors, ionization smoke sensors, and visual observations. Experimental results for the critical air velocity for smoke reversal as a function of fire intensity compared very well with model predictions based upon a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) fire dynamics simulator.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. Electrical Vertical Sounding (EVS) profiling has proven to be a valuable tool to set the alignment and guide the design of a 17 km-long, 4.7m diameter water-conveyance tunnel in the Peruvian Andes at an altitude of 4,260 m. EVS profiling helped determine where to locate boreholes, and reduce the amount of drilling to 1,200 m of vertical and inclined boreholes. EVS profiling allowed the designer to identify and verify by drilling the existence of zones with difficult tunneling conditions that were avoided by realigning the tunnel. The rock quality was checked by drilling and a combined scheme of excavation by TBM and conventional drill and blast technique was developed for the final design.

Pillars with width to height ratios of less than 1.0 are frequently created in underground hard rock mines. The strength of slender pillars can be estimated using empirically developed equations. However, the equations can provide variable results when the width-to-height ratios approach 0.5. This paper investigates some of the issues affecting pillar strength at low width-to-height ratios in hard brittle rock. The investigation includes an evaluation of empirical pillar strength data presented in the literature and observations of pillar performance in underground limestone mines in the eastern United States, supplemented by numerical modeling in which failure processes and sensitivity of slender pillars to variations in rock mass properties are evaluated. The results showed that the strength of slender pillars is more variable than that of wider pillars. The numerical model results demonstrated the increasing role of brittle rock failure in slender pillar strength. The absence of confinement in slender pillars can result in a fully brittle failure process, while wider pillars fail in a combined brittle and shearing mode. The onset of spalling in slender pillars occurs at or near the ultimate strength, while this is not the case for wider pillars. Slender pillars are shown to be more sensitive to the presence of discontinuities than wider pillars, which can partly explain the increased variability of slender pillar strength. Two examples are presented, which illustrate failure initiation by brittle spalling and the sensitivity of slender pillars to the presence of discontinuities.

Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent upon the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features; in order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application.

It is crucial to reestablish a domestic rare earths minerals production industry to help secure the Nation's clean energy future, reduce the U.S. vulnerability to material shortages related to national defense, and to maintain our global technical and economic competitiveness. Given that the Chinese dominance of the rare earths market has adversely impacted supply stability and endangers the United States and its allies' assured access to key materials, rare earths should qualify as materials either strategic or critical to national security. Further, the U.S. government should facilitate the reintroduction of a globally competitive rare earth industry in the U.S. Realization of this objective requires: ? Developing domestic processing capability so that the U.S. is not primarily dependent on China as a source of rare earth ore, and almost exclusively dependent of China for processing of the ores. ? Providing a mechanism where access to Federal lands for rare earth exploration and extraction is possible, and ? Training engineers to design and operate rare earth ore processing facilities

High-speed TBM excavation requires rapid ground assessment ahead of excavation, particularly in complex grounds. The Tunnel Reflector Tracing technology (TRT) developed by authors, uses seismic reflections to produce volumetric images of ground anomalies. To further minimize interruption in the TBM excavation the authors modified surveying technique switching from cable (wired) to radio (wireless) data acquisition system. This paper presents the outline of the Wireless TRT system, and compares the results for the wired and the wireless surveys. The comparison shows that the wireless system offers high precision data, is more efficient and economical and significantly less intrusive in tunneling operations.

Introduction In 1967, Tenneco acquired Kern County Land Co. The primary reason for the acquisition was to obtain Kern's agricultural, manufacturing, and oil interests. Included in the Kern portfolio were the core of Tenneco's present sodium leases in Sweetwater County, WY. This lease base has been ex¬panded and now consists of 62 km2 (24 sq miles). Beneath this property lies more than 500 Mt (550 million st) of economic trona ore. Following the Kern acquisition, Tenneco continued exploration and feasibility studies concerning the trona leases. The effort was accelerated in 1976. Tenneco was attracted to trona because of the favorable lease position it held, the growth rate of the Wyoming industry during the 1960s and 1970s, and the prospects for a long-term, stable business enterprise. The reserve picture was certainly attractive to a company long accustomed to the never-ending struggle to replace oil and gas reserves. In 1978, Wyoming was a boom area that had experienced rapid growth for a number of years. Unemployment was very low and vacant housing nonexistent. The prospects for soda ash were somewhat different in the 1970s than now. But it was recognized even then that a new producer would have a challenging task to compete in this business. Tenneco knew the capital burden required to build a grassroots facility during inflationary time, would have to be offset elsewhere Since labor and energy are the dominant direct costs in mining trona and producing soda ash these factors have always received a great deal of attention. Contracting and permits Environmental monitoring on the site began in late 1977. With the already mentioned considerations in mind, engineering began by mid-1978. Brown & Root Inc. was selected as the general contractor for the project. S. A. Scott & Co. was the engineering subcontractor for the mine shafts, hoists, ventilation system, and miscellaneous mine facilities. Frontier-Kemper was awarded the contract for sinking the two mine shafts. Acquisition of numerous federal, state, and local permits occupied all of 1978 and 1979. The Wyoming Industrial Siting Permit, which addresses socioeconomic issues, drew the most public interest. Siting issues were all satisfactorily resolved by negotiating reasonable stipulations with various local governmental units, school districts, and the like. Site location The Green River project location is not truly remote. It is located within 5 km (3 miles) of Interstate 80 and only about 32 km (20 miles) west of the city of Green River. Nevertheless, a substantial investment had to be made in communication and utility links to the site. These included: • A 14-km (8.5-mile) rail spur connecting with the Union Pacific Railroad at Bryan, WY. This spur has four bridge structures including one crossing Interstate 80. Most soda ash is shipped by rail, and coal is received over this line as well. • A paved 5-km (3-mile) roadway connecting to Interstate 80. • A powerline extension of about 27 km (16.5 miles), along with two new substations. • A 24-km (15-mile) waterline connecting the plant to a pump station on the Green River. The site is located on gently sloping terrain at an elevation of about 2.1 km (6800 ft). Ground conditions are good for construction. Weathered bedrock lies near the surface in most places. Geology The general geology of the Green River Basin has been well described previously. Tenneco's ore is in several superimposed evaporate beds. Fatigue in mining operations is a serious issue and a significant contributor to incidents and accidents. While mine operators are using or introducing new technology to monitor operator fatigue, there is little work that focuses on the subjective experience of fatigue and the use of fatigue monitoring technology. To investigate this issue, eight focus groups with a total of 44 operators of heavy haulage equipment working for two mining companies in the Mountain West of the USA participated in 1-h focus groups. The topic of the focus groups was the experience of operator fatigue and issues surrounding fatigue at the workplace. The results of the content analyses suggest that operators are well aware of the signs of fatigue, and that they understand the severity of these signs as well. In addition, they are aware of the effect of fatigue on driving performance and are using a wide range of methods to manage fatigue. Finally, based on participants’ assessment, current fatigue monitoring systems lack face validity and reliability and are perceived as not being effective. The results of this study emphasize the importance of a socio-technical systems perspective in the context of miner health and safety management. Only such a comprehensive perspective can result in improvements that are sustainable.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2005 draws upon available information from literature, industry and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. It provides data on exploration budgets by global region and mineral commodity and identifies significant mineral discoveries and exploration target areas. It also discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analysis of the mineral industry based on these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2005. They include budgetary statistics provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) and information on regional and site-specific exploration activities in 2005 compiled by the USGS.

Today's highly publicized issues of resource development and environmental protection are not new. But recently these issues have been played one against the other, and some would have us believe they are mutually exclusive. Why? Because modern man has realized that the shortest route to achieving economic progress is to subdue nature. He extracts mineral resources from the earth to provide the raw materials upon which other processes and services are based. But often in his search for economic progress he finds that other highly- held values (e.g., an unspoiled environment) have been violated. The natural response is a counter action - to attempt to protect nature. But this response is basically unsatisfactory because it is reactive.

Gravity concentration at the Pegasus Gold/Montana Tunnels Mine, near Helena, MT, began in June 1991 when a coarse-gold-scalping circuit was commissioned. It processes a small portion of the ball-mill circulating load to reduce the risk of gold particles that are too coarse to float from advancing to flotation. The circuit also cost-effectively enhances overall gold recovery and payable gold ounces. This gravity circuit has been a major success. Since the circuit was commissioned, throughput has increased 30%. Several modifications and improvements were made during the last three years that allowed the gravity circuit to keep pace with the higher tonnage. The overall approach to gravity concentration at Montana Tunnels has always been to optimize production rather than maximize the gold ounces produced. This philosophy has now yielded a circuit expansion and relocation project. It will allow for an estimated 50% increase in gravity gold production, while significantly reducing the unit costs of production.

While tunneling in Europe has been a tradition for centuries, many companies and countries have embraced tunnel innovation with considerable vigor and creativity. Indeed, local needs and site conditions have provided the initiative for improved means, methods, materials and equipment to complete progressively more challenging projects. Many recently completed tunnels have expanded tunneling technology and contributed to the development of highly specialized and productive equipment ? such as the mixed-mode tunnel boring ma-chine (TBM) presently in operation at the SOCATOP A- [ ] 86 road tunnel and the high-pressure slurry TBMs for the Westerschelde Tunnel in the Netherlands and Hollandsas near Malmo, Sweden. This paper describes some of the key technologies employed by European tunnel builders and designers including the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), advanced earth pressure-balanced (EPB) machines, pres-sure-faced (slurry) tunneling machines as well as ?hybrid? or mixed-mode TBMs. While these tunneling methods and equipment generally involve significant equipment investment, they may also involve highly trained, experienced and specialized tunneling and support crews as well as materials and tools specifically developed to supplement or complement tunneling performance. For example, mechanized pipe arch placement substantially improves ground support measures and NATM advance and on larger tunnel cross-sections.
