Currently, decisions made by mine management are usually based on economic analysis and predetermined rating systems and tables. As financial and other constraints on mining operations become more severe, more accurate methods are required. Discrete-event simulation programs have been used successfully in many mining applications, including the simulation of open-pit, truck-and-shovel operations. However, these simulations could not model complex systems well enough to provide the detailed modeling of the haulage roads and other mining operations that is needed today. The recent advances in computing technology combined with the recent abilities of simulation to realistically simulate complex systems and visually present results in 3D have made simulation a more detailed and valuable aid in the evaluation of mining projects.

Mining activity in Mexico began in the 16th century when the Spanish realized the mining potential of the new territory. Since that time, mining has evolved into a strong and vital industry for the country. Good professionals in the mining-related fields are fundamental to the growth and improvement of this industry. Since the end of the 18th century, formal education in mining has been available at the University of Guanajuato, in Guanajuato, Mexico. This school created one of the first schools of mines on the North American continent in 1828. In recent times, some other programs have been created at other universities. Universities offering mining related programs Listed here are the seven universities in Mexico that offer mining related degrees. They are the University of Guanajuato, UNAM, the University of Zacatecas, the University of Chihuahua, the University of Sonora, the University of Coahuila and the University of San Luis Potosi. The University of Guanajuato is the only Mexican university that offers graduate studies at the master's level. No PhD programs in mining engineering are offered at any Mexican university. Programs at each university are of different duration. They are: • University of Guanajuato-Five-and-a-half years, divided into five years of classroom instruction and six months in the working place. • University of Zacatecas - Five years of classroom instruction.

The elimination of metal ions from aqueous solutions by biosorption plays an important role in water pollution control. Heavy metals are hazardous to the aquatic ecosystem and pose possible human health risk. Beside the toxic and harmful effects to organisms living in water heavy metals also accumulate throughout the food chain and may affect human beings. Conventional methods for removing metals from aqueous solutions before they are disposed of include chemical precipitation and sludge separation, chemical oxidation or reduction, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, electrochemical treatment, and evaporation. Alternative processing methods are being considered more seriously. Sorption and/or complexation of dissolved metals species based on the chemical activity of biomass, known as biosorption, is the base of the new technology for metal removal and recovery. Different types of biomass (dead and alive) have been investigated for biosorption of heavy metals ions. In the present work, the cadmium biosorption capacity and bioflotation of Rhodococcus opacus were studied. The adsorption capacity of biomass was investigated by batch experiments, the influences of some variables like pH and ion concentration were evaluated and the experimental data obtained for each metal were evaluated and fitted using adsorption and kinetic models. The bioflotation process showed that R. opacus has excellent features as collector and foaming agent after metal biosorption. Around 90% of cadmium uptake by the biomass was achieved by bioflotation.

ROCKS outcropping in Elandsrand's lease area consist of quartzite, shale and lava of the Pretoria group and are underlain first by 1 300 metres of dolomite and then by the Black Reef series. This in turn rests unconformably on Ventersdorp and Witwatersrand rocks and truncates the basal member of the Ventersdorp Super group, the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR), near the northern boundary of the lease. The Ventersdorp Super group is composed of lava and varies in thickness from nil in the north of the lease area to 1 000 metres in the south. The VCR, less than 100 cm thick, dips 210 to the south east and lies between 1 786 and 3 386 metres below datum. The Oberholzer dyke straddles the north-western corner of the property and separates the dewatered Oberholzer compartment, over which most of Elandsrand lies, from the as yet undewatered Turffontein compartment. As so much of the lease area is covered by thick impermeable rocks, the water-bearing capacity of the underlying dolomite was expected to be low. The man-material (MM) and rock hoisting ventilation (RU) shafts were sited well within and above a gravimetrically determined 200-metre 'safe-limit' contour of the northern slope of the Gatsrand. Two pre-cementstion holes were drilled and the cementation rigs were placed within a 15 metre annulus round each shaft to seal any likely water-bearing pockets in the proximity of the excavation during sinking through the first 300 metres of shales and the surface water-table.

The phosphate rock review did not arrive in time for publication in the. June issue. The world phosphate industry continued its slide in 1992 from the already depressed levels in 1991. The industry is locked into a 30-year fertilizer price low due to the worldwide fertilizer glut. Domestic production and imported, marketable phosphate rock decreased 1%, while domestic consumption increased by 1 % last year. The US Bureau of Mines reported a decrease in the domestic phosphate rock value from $25.42/t in 1991 to $23/t in 1992 ($23.06/st to $20.80/st). The diammonion phosphate (DAP) product price also dropped in value from $138/ t in January 1992 to $11 0/t in December ($125/st to $99.70/st). Continued declines in DAP prices is forcing the US fertilizer industry to develop cost-saving programs and reorganizations. Layoffs in 1992 resulted in a 7.6% decrease in the Florida phosphate workforce. Since 1980, the Florida workforce has declined by 35%. Small phosphate companies were forced to close operations or were sold to larger phosphate companies. Federal and state environmental regulations for byproduct waste disposal methods are being studied. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved phosphogypsum use in agri¬cultural and research applications as long as the radium 226 concentration is lower than 10 pci/g. The EPA is also reviewing regulations concerning air emissions at fertilizer plants. Industry publications reported the possibility of continued company sales and mergers in 1993. Industry expectations are optimistic while waiting for an upturn in the market. The US phosphate industry consolidation into three or four major companies should evolve into a stronger world market force.

Under a Section 319 Water Quality grant from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, a working group of government agencies, mining industry representatives, and University of Alaska researchers undertook reclamation of an abandoned mine site on Birch Creek, near mile 101 of the Steese Highway. Stream hydrology, water quality, and the extent and nature of natural revegetation, were measured before the site was then recontoured to decrease the bedload deposition and bank erosion of the streams. Methods for stabilization of streams and rivers appear to have much in common with those for locations further south, but are subject to complications unique to the North, such as the formation of aufeiss, and to a lack of accurate climatological data. Natural revegetation appears to be possible for most northern placer mine sites. However, it may take place more slowly than required by public perception. Preliminary data indicate a surprising lack of nutrients in the floodplains of mined areas. Natural revegetation may be enhanced by selective planting of grasses and willows, which will contribute variously to soil quality, bank stabilization, and short-term appearance. Monitoring of hydrologic and water quality data, and of natural and artificially placed vegetation will continue at the .Birch Creek site through the summer of 1995,

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan) is the largest water wholesaler in southern California. Its service area spans the major urbanized portions of Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties. More than 15 million people are serviced by Metropolitan through its 27 member agencies. The primary sources of Metropolitan's water supply are the Colorado River Aqueduct (CRA) and California's State Water Project (SWP). Currently, planning and design level studies are underway by Metropolitan to expand the water storage and conveyance systems within the service area for the purposes of providing increased efficiency and flexibility to manage limited water supplies, improving water quality, and increasing system reliability. The system reliability issue is particularly significant because the conveyance facilities from both the CRA and the SWP must cross the active San Andreas fault. This fault is considered to be the source fault for the anticipated "Big Earthquake" in southern California. To meet these objectives, Metropolitan's expansion plans involve a major new storage reservoir, new large diameter pipeline and tunnel conveyance facilities, more efficient utilization of existing groundwater basins, and an aggressive public awareness and conservation program. This paper focuses on the planning studies that have been carried out for over 50 miles of tunnels being considered for several of Metropolitan's proposed conveyance systems. These tunnels have ranged in length from a few hundred feet to over 42,000 feet, with depths of cover ranging from a few tens of feet to over 3,000 feet, and finished diameters ranging from 10 to 20 feet.

INTRODUCTION This paper outlines the methods used to drill and pregrout prior to the excavation of five Mine Shafts in the Coal Measures of the Eastern United States. One example is the use of cement pregrouting of four 240 meter deep shafts and the second is the use of chemical pregrouting of a 360 meter deep shaft. These two examples will be compared and contrasted, both at the investigation stage of each project, and during the drilling and pregrouting itself, to illustrate the different approaches taken and how these affected the outcome, both technically and economically. INVESTIGATION FOR 240 METER SHAFTS In the case of the four 240 meter shafts, site investigation was carried out prior to bid, and information was made available by the Client in the form of a report. This report was based on pressure testing of NQ cored boreholes at each shaft site. Pressure testing was repeated two or more times, at each test setting, using 345 or 690 kPa of water pressure in accordance with the procedure outlined by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. Flow readings were taken every minute over a period of ten minutes. Maximum computed permeabilities, for the strata which accepted water under test for the shafts, carried between 1.0 x 10-6 m/s and 3.0 x 10-6 m/s, and total calculated seepages varied between 170' litres/minute to 3891 litres/minute. Although these figures did not indicate an excessive amount of seepage, the Client decided that pregrouting should be carried out, and chemical grouting was not discussed, even though the test permeabilities indicated the use of cement grout would be limited in this case.

This paper reviews the technical advice available to support companies in the delivery of social aspects of sustainable development. It will draw on diverse experience from the sparsely populated plains of the Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world, to the densely populated villages of the Carpathian Mountains in Slovakia. It will review basic requirements for the consideration of social issues, as well as guidance on international best practice. It will review: the legal basis; coverage; consideration of alternatives; scope; inclusive decision-making; indicator development; impact monitoring and evaluation. The paper will discuss the breadth and depth of social issues for consideration, including the realms of responsibility of a company in terms of social development in different operating environments. The extractive industries invest substantial amounts of money which typically dwarfs local development, health or education budgets. Capacity building for local authorities is not directly the role of the company, but when understood as a strategy for risk management, it can play a vital part of sustainable development that benefits the local community and reduces the risk of social problems impacting profits. The paper will argue that social impact assessment is most effective when the outcomes are in line with a company?s principles and support core business practices. It is important that social impact assessment is viewed as an integral part of project decision-making and moves away from mistrusted PR and unsustainable philanthropy toward partnership, which finds suitable and appropriate solutions delivering ?win-win? outcomes. While development should not be seen as a direct company objective, engaging with development actors to better understand the operating context can ensure that social investment complements existing initiatives. The paper will also present different mechanisms for engaging with local actors, as well as developing successful social programmes.

This paper describes the successful repair of trunion on a 14 foot diameter by 20 foot long ball mill. Diagrams of the repair are included for visual perspective and non-destructive test procedures are outlined.

Mine managers rely on their experience, section foreman's daily reports and occasional time studies to make important production, maintenance and forecasting decisions. This information is often subjective and imprecise, consumes expensive engineers time, is often biased and is restricted to short time periods. Managers need better information. Furthermore, if a recently purchased machine is being evaluated, a large increase (>10%) in productivity may be obvious, but small increases are usually masked by other variables. In today's highly competitive markets, cumulative small changes are important, especially since managers have already exhausted most available, obvious avenues of improvement. A technique to separate these charges from effects of other variables and to quantify the target effect is necessary. CSM researchers are addressing this need by developing an intelligent decision support system (IDSS). It provides key production and maintenance information to support management decisions by recognizing patterns in mining machine sensor data and representing knowledge about mine management, operations, layout and equipment. A continuous miner section at Western Fuels-Utah Inc.'s Deserado Mine in Rangely, CO is the test facility for the research. Power transducers located in the sections load center provide kilowatt versus time data from continuous section equipment. The IDSS pattern recognition algorithms classify the kilowatt versus time patterns into individual machine operating modes. It produces an output similar to a typical industrial engineering time study but continuously, automatically and without an engineer in the section. It is relatively easy for a time-study engineer to identify the stop and end points of a cycle element and classify it by looking at the machine and glancing at a stop watch. The problem is that monitoring system hardware and software do not have these unique capabilities. Consequently, IDSS algorithms must automatically define the begin and end points of machine tasks and identify the task by recognizing patterns in kilowatt versus time data. However, many mines have file drawers of time-study type data that are not very useful. So, IDSS contains the knowledge representation subsystem (IDSS/KRS) to produce short reports containing only key information. This is difficult because mine environments continually change and information requirements differ for each management level. Consequently, IDSS/KRS must learn and adapt to new conditions in a dynamic mining environment. Western Fuels-Utah owns and operates the Deserado Mine, located about 19 km (12 miles) northeast of Rangely, CO (Upadhyay, 1988; King and Eros, 1988). One longwall and two continuous miner sections produce about 900 kt (1 million st) of coal annually for the Deseret Generation and Transmission Cooperative's 4000 MW power plant located near Bonanza, UT. Three mine monitoring systems control the underground mine, the preparation plant and the unit train load out. Pattern recognition IDSS/PRS produces a listing of begin and end times for each machine operating event as shown is Table 1.

A charge of the Research Council of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc. (SME) is to ?? identify longer term research ideas/needs, that in the perception of the SME Research Council, could represent significant technology breakthroughs ?? (SME, n.d.). In 2008, the Council decided that instead of unilaterally developing a list of top priorities, it would involve the entire membership of SME in identifying the top priorities. Additionally, it decided to keep the list short. This paper describes the process and results from that exercise.

A review of the geology and mineralogy of several of the better known hydrothermal platinum-group metal (PGM) deposits is undertaken. Along with new data from two recently discovered occurrences in Nevada, a number of common characteristics of these deposits are identified. Newly described PGM occurrences in Nevada are the abandoned Gibellini mine workings characterized by limestone-hosted hydrothermal Mn-V-Zn-Ni mineralization and the granite-hosted base-and precious-metal veins of the Gingerload claims.

While the charcoal in pulp (CIP) process was introduced to the mining industry many years earlier, it did not gain widespread recognition until 1973 when Homes take Mining Company installed a CIP circuit at their Lead, South Dakota plant. Since then, a number of mills have been put into production which utilizes activated charcoal for the recovery of precious metals. One of these plants was the Jerritt Canyon mill which Freeport Gold Company commissioned in 1981. It was during the time that the author was employed by Freeport Gold Company that the ideas and concepts presented in this paper were formulated.

It has been estimated that about 45 tonnes of mercury are emitted annually in the USA in the atmosphere as a result of burning coal in power-generating plants. A similar situation had existed in the metallurgical industry particularly in zinc production plants but this problem has been solved long ago by introducing scrubbing systems. Methods of mercury removal and recovery are discussed.

PREFACE In German coal mines the application of tunnel boring machines has become a very effective and economic technique for major development works. After initial trials around 1970 the breakthrough was reached by driving 13 km of road ways on Rheinland and Friedrich Heinrich collieries, using a DEMAG tunnel boring machine of 6 m diameter. INTRODUCTION The coal mines of Rheinland and Friedrich Heinrich are to be found in the West of the Ruhr Area, the largest coal mining area in the Federal Republic of Germany (Table 1). They form part of the Ruhrkohle company. Rheinland coal mines produces 41000 to 43000 t of run-of-mine coal every day, of which 20500 t are usable coal. Friedrich Heinrich has a daily production of 17000 t of run-of-mine coal, 9000 t of which are usable. The coal is worked at depths of 600 to 1100 m in seams 0.6 to 3.0 m thick. The method of mining is longwall, and the machines used are ploughs and shearer loaders. From 1973 to 1980 a programme was put into operation in these two mines to develop and open up the coal field on the 885 m level. A total tunnel length of 20 km was to be driven. In 1989, worldwide total mineral industry activity registered advances from 1988. The advances may not have been as noteworthy as in 1988, but they can be regarded as a worthy theme for this article. The momentous political events throughout the centrally planned economy world had only a modest impact on actual 1989 industry performance. But these events have such potential for worldwide changes in economic activity in future years that they dwarf the actual happenings of 1989 in the minerals industry. Perhaps most significant factor here is the rapidity with which these changes have occurred. The end of World War II saw the almost immediate division of the world into major economic blocs. Since then, mineral industry activities and other industrial operations have been governed, to a considerable extent, by this partitioning. The developed market economy nations have operated as a group, the centrally planned economy states as another group. And these two groups essentially have vied for recognition in mineral industry operations in the developing economy states of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The boundaries of these country blocs were fixed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. They were not markedly altered in the ensuing 40 years. We have seen the establishment of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, the continued Arab-Israeli confrontations in the Near East, the upheavals surrounding the rise of Moslem Fundamentalism in Iran, and the establishment of Soviet-oriented governments in Cuba and Nicaragua. These events have had notable effects on the world economy. But they have done little to change the pattern of market economy states functioning as a competitive bloc with the centrally-planned economy countries.

Introduction A number of processes for deriving more convenient liquid and gaseous fuels from coal are commercially available or in final stages of development. Generally, synfuels from coal processes have efficiencies ranging from 50 to 70%. Considerable engineering design and development work are necessary to bring forth commercial plants using the various technologies-but technological breakthroughs are not expected or needed. Gasification While a variety of solids handling, gas contacting, and gas quality upgrading techniques may be employed in the various gasification processes, the primary goal is the same-to convert a sulfur-containing solid to an essentially sulfur-free gaseous product. The gaseous product may be a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide with nitrogen. Definitions are not rigorous, but high-Btu gas is generally over 900 Btu/scf(33 534 kJ/m3) and low-Btu gas is generally below 350 Btu/scf(13 041 kJ/m3). Medium or intermediate gas falls between these values. High-Btu production is more difficult, as it requires additional upgrading of a low- or intermediate-Btu gas stream to produce a commercially acceptable product. The carbon/ hydrogen ratio is adjusted either by rejecting a portion of the carbon, increasing the hydrogen, or a combination of both. The chemical processing steps include production processing gas containing carbon oxides and hydrogen by the reaction of carbon and steam (gasification); reaction of hydrogen and coal to form methane (a hydrogasification process); reaction of hydrogen and carbon monoxide to produce methane (methanation); and the removal of impurities. The gasification processes share a number of common techniques. The coal received at the plant site must be further cleaned and crushed or ground before it can enter the gasifier. Conventional cleaning methods are used to remove extraneous materials such as metal, rocks, etc. For some processes the coal must be finely ground so it may be fluidized or entrained in a flowing gas stream. For other processes crushing and sizing only are required. Agglomerating coals may be pretreated by heating, mild oxidation with air, or other procedures to assure smooth gasifier operation and to avoid reactor plugging. Nonagglomerating coals Such as lignite and subbituminous coal normally do not require pretreatment. Feeding a solid material such as coal to a higher pressure reactor is a difficult task. Dry feeders using a series of pressurized lock hoppers, or wet systems in which a slurry is pumped into the reactor, are used. The gasification step is the heart of the process. Here, the solid feed material is contacted with synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen). The coal is devolatilized and a portion of the fixed carbon converted to methane. The gas-solids contacting methods used include fixed beds, fluidized beds, moving beds, entrained beds, and free-fall systems. The gasification process, overall, is endothermic and the heat required to maintain reaction rates is usually supplied by burning a portion of the coal feed. External heat sources such as electric resistance heating, molten salt or solid heat carriers, and the introduction of a hot hydrogen stream also have been tested. Following the gasification step the particulate materials and heavy hydrocarbons contained in the reactor effluent are removed by a water quench and solids separation system. If low-Btu gas or synthesis gas is the desired product, the raw gas is scrubbed to remove carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds and then is used directly. The Research and development review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. The competitiveness of the US mining industry in a world market depends on many factors. The introduction of new and innovative methods, though, can have a significant, long-term impact. As industry cuts back its own long- term research and development efforts, the federal government continues to provide the major support for mining and minerals research. The US Bureau of Mines works with the mining industry and the academic community to develop innovative concepts for the mining and processing of non-fuel minerals. The Bureau’s research focuses on exploration and mining technology, minerals and materials science, processing technology, health and safety and environmental technology. Mine design A conical caving system, being designed by the Bureau, would allow the development of low-grade ore bodies, early startup at lower initial capital costs and increased safety and versatility in development and production. This method is a form of mass caving that allows the ore to be drawn from a central loading point at the bottom of the cone- shaped caving zone (Fig. 1). A simulation laboratory model and computer analysis show initial promise for predicted performance. For tabular, flat-lying ore deposits, the Bureau is investigating a version of the Finnish slot-and-fill system. For this total extraction method, a pattern of rectangular panels is laid out. One panel is extracted in a series of parallel slots and is replaced by alternating-row pillars of backfill. After one panel is mined, equipment and operations are transferred to another panel. By transforming this rectangular layout to a curvilinear geometry, one continuous spiral can be mined without re positioning equipment. Instead of parallel slots and pillars aligned in a rectangle, the slots and pillars are arranged in a spiral.
