In relation with the construction of the Sölk power station in Steiermark, Austria, tenders were called in October, 1976, for the construction of the 12-km "Donnersbach collector tunnel" by "Steirische Wasserkraftund Elektrizitäts AG". The specified showed both conventional blast tunneling as well as mechanical excavation with a tunneling machine, diameter 3.55 m. Total construction time from the date of the invitation to tender was given as 4 years. Part of the project was the construction of a concrete circular tunnel lining 20 cm thick. In 1977 the contract was awarded to "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Donnersbach", a joint venture formed by two companies, G. Hinteregger & Söhne, Salzburg, and G. Hinteregger, Bregenz. It provided for the project to be carried out with a tunnel boring machine. GEOLOGICAL DATA The entire tunnel was to be bored through a complex of the garnet mica schist group of the Wölz schists formations. These range from highly quartz-bearing to quartzitic mica schists, with thick, discordantly interstratified beds of marble and dolomite. This presentation describes the operation and features of the WCC Carbon Reactivation Kiln. Particular emphasis is placed on minimizing carbon losses, corrosion resistance, fuel efficiency and the fate of mercury during reactivation in the multiple-tube vertical retort. Detailed laboratory work indicates that there is complete vaporization of mercury in the kiln, no refluxing in the upper sections and distinct advantages in using this type of kiln when sizing collection equipment.

"To Sink or Not to Sink"; this play on the Bard's words sums up the considerations and problems that face the owner on every potential shaft sinking project. The growing demand for access into the earth is pressing construction into new areas and to greater depths. The following discussion will entertain some of the effects of these new and unknown aspects upon the approach to designing and sinking of deep shafts. We will also look at the current shortages of equipment, materials and skilled manpower, and their effect upon the planning and sinking of shafts. Particular emphasis will be placed upon equipment selection, and we will discuss how economics, while always a prime consideration, is now, more than ever, both an incentive and a detriment to the industry. FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS Shaft construction is assuming ever increasing importance both in mining and civil endeavors. The rapid depletion of near surface mineral reserves is requiring the mining industry to look deeper into the earth for new sources. These greater depths increase the exposure to unfavorable geological conditions; heavier ground, high water pressures, and high temperature. South African gold mines have now reached depths of 12, 000 feet, where the rock temperature is 1380 and water bursts from the fissures. Gas hydrates (GH) are crystalline compounds consisting of a water molecule lattice, in the cages of which suitably sized molecules, such as methane or other light hydrocarbons, are confined. Although this solid phase looks similar to common ice, it contains substantial amounts of natural gas. The necessary conditions for natural gas hydrate formation exist in some deep-sea marine environments and in permafrost regions. Despite the extensive research, which has been conducted in the fields of exploration and exploitation of natural gas hydrate deposits over the last decades, there is still great uncertainty over the estimated amount of hydrates that these reserves bear. The present work examines some key features of sediments which affect their capacity to host gas hydrates. The hydrate content of a natural hydrate formation is correlated qualitatively with factors such as temperature, effective porosity, mineralogical composition, bio-surfactants, pore pressure and compaction pressure.

The first of this two part series takes a look at some of the history and types of flotation as well as agents and mechanisms involved in it. Part two, next month, will examine flotation processes as applied to various sulfide and nonsulfide mineral ores. Flotation-"froth" flotation-is a physicochemical method of concentrating finely ground ores. The process involves chemical treatment of an ore pulp to create conditions favorable for the attachment of predetermined mineral particles to air bubbles. The air bubbles carry the selected minerals to the surface of the pulp, there forming a stabilized froth that is skimmed off and from which the predetermined mineral particles are recovered. Other minerals remain submerged in the pulp.

Semiautogenous milling was the subject of 18 papers presented at the SME Fall Meeting in Albuquerque, NM. The process design and scale-up of SAG mills was discussed in several papers. These included a review of testing methods for the sizing of SAG mills by Barrett and Allan. Austin et al. presented an improved simulation model for SAG mill grinding, with model validity demonstrated against pilot plant SAG mill test results. Rogovin et al. presented some pilot plant results relating to the charge motion, hold-up, and particle size segregation in SAG mills. A number of papers described improvements achieved in operating SAG mill circuits. These included presentations by Dailey concerning mills at the National Steel Pellet Co., by Brown and Pipke concerning the Island Copper grinding circuit, by Lovering of Afton Mines Ltd., and by Bartrum et al. of Kidston Gold Mines Ltd. Bush and Hegerle of Amax also discussed SAG mill operations at the company's Henderson mill. They addressed the topics of SAG mill grinding economics. Other papers addressed the topics of SAG mill control (Vanderbeek et al. and Pennington), grinding media (Meulendyke et al.), liners (Kjos), and fabrication (Carr and Utley). The 1985 AIME Annual Meeting in New York featured four technical sessions concerning size reduction technology and practice. Papers involving fundamentals included one by Hinde describing simulation model usage for quantifying the classification and concentration of heavy minerals in grinding circuits. Another, by Rogers et al., discussed simulation models that were used as a design aid in evaluating screens versus hydrocyclones for fine grinding circuits. Arbiter discussed dimensional considerations in grinding mill design, and Schwechten and Schonert proposed the use of a high pressure roll mill as a means for reducing energy requirements in fine grinding. Internal classification in tumbling mills was the subject of a paper by Hogg and Rogovin. The mechanism of internal classification were identified and their effects illustrated. Simulation for the process design of ball mills was exemplified in a paper by Rogers, Austin, and Brame concerning phosphate grinding in laboratory to large diameter mills. The incorporation of liberation into size reduction models was the subject of papers by Austin et al., Herbst et al., and Choi et al. Gupta used simulations models to further investigate zero order fines production in ball and rod mills. Of the published literature, many articles on size reduction were published in various publications in 1985. Articles concerning ball mill grinding included an analysis of interstitial gas effects in dry grinding by Cottaar et al., an analysis of mill grinding noise by Watson, studies of factors affecting breakage rates in dry milling by Gupta et al., and in wet milling by Tangsathitkuchai and Austin. Austin and Klimpel presented two papers concerning ball wear and ball size distribution effects. Koka et al., and Gotsis et al., described recent developments concerning the Szego mill. A model for hammer milling circuits was described in papers by Gotsis et al. and Gotsis and Austin. Heim et al. reported on wet grinding in Perl mills, and Kuga et al. presented findings concerning pulverizing in a screen mill. Studies of grinding effects on particle surfaces were published by Meloy and Hofmann et al., and Scieszka proposed a technique to investigate pulverizing properties of coals. Austin and Rogers discussed factors of powder technology of significance in industrial size reduction in mills and crushers. (Space limitations preclude listing of references. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) can be a magnificent tunneling device under optimal rock conditions. Such ideal conditions would include good Rock Material Characteristics (compact, uniform; low to medium strength, hardness, and abrasiveness); good Rock Mass Characteristics (few joints and shears; unweathered); and good Geologic Environmental Characteristics (above groundwater level and moderate in-situ stress). Such idealized rock conditions would eliminate support problems, fallout at face and grippers, frequent cutter changes, and water problems. Daily advance rates of 50 m would be commonplace. Unfortunately, nature seldom provides the ideal geologic characteristics. The challenge to the geologist, machine manufacturer, and contractor is to provide equipment and procedures to best handle the adverse geologic features, once identified.

A technique that has been used for inspection and appraisal of rock tunnels is described. It enables a rapid and complete record to be made of those factors necessary for the engineering assessment of the rock conditions surrounding a tunnel. Full understanding of the regional geology, and a careful recording of data concerning the principal geological and construction factors is essential basic data for a tunneling project, whether the tunnel is under construction or is already in service. A methodical recording of data concerning general geology, shears, fracture orientations, spacing, persistence, rock classification, water condition, shear frequency, excavation method, blasting procedure, and rock stabilization and support methods, combined with a photographic record, can be completed by experienced engineers and geologists at the rate of over 1000 feet of tunnel per shift.

The multi-circular face shield (MFS) is a new type of tunnelling machine for construction of the special cross section and has been put to practical use in 1988. The MF shield has two circular faces partially overlapped in a single shield machine and can construct the cross section shaped like glasses for the double track railway. And it is possible to equip two or more cicular faces horizontally or vertically, if necessary. During the development of the MF shield the experiments have been carried out for the purpose of estimating the excavatability and the face stability of the MF shield. As a result it was confirmed that the both types of MF shield (one with double faces aligned horizontally and the other with double faces aligned vertically) has higher performance in the face stability and lower value in the cutter torque and the total thrust than the conventional circular shield.

Most miners know that Latin America's major mineral areas are in the mountains of Mexico and down the backbone of the Andes in South America. These areas comprise some of the more rugged and challenging parts of the world's geography, and the risks of doing business in these areas are just as difficult as the impressive task of extracting and processing ores. However, Latin America does contain mineral deposits, some untouched and many to be discovered, that convince venturesome people that the tremendous effort required to mine them will be worthwhile. The rewards have often been adequate in the past. Hopefully, they will be in the future. Background The safest statement that can be made about Latin America is that the "ballgame is constantly changing." Here are some examples: Chile. Under President Frei in the 1960s, Chile welcomed foreign mining interests, even though the government was acquiring significant ownership interests in the big copper properties. Then, under Allende in the 1970s, the big mines were taken over and compensation was denied on various grounds including the allegation that extraordinary profits had been made that should have been taxed. After Allende, an about-face was made in policy; former owners of the expropriated mines received some compensation and new foreign investment was seriously welcomed. The thought of constructing an intake shaft five miles from the shore and 142 feet below the surface of Lake Huron from the bottom up sounds like a questionable venture. Why would one want to raise a shaft from the bottom at the end of a 16 foot diameter, six mile long tunnel to within six feet of the bottom of Lake Huron? The answer lies in the fact that Lake Huron is seldom a tranquil lake. The construction period and workable days from the surface are limited. Two previous attempts to construct this intake shaft by conventional means had been thwarted by lake storms. These approaches were circular sheet-piling cofferdams with the intention of sinking a 30 foot OD, five foot wall thickness concrete casing in the center. However lake storms, particularly in the months of November and December, proved disasterous. The last attempt was halted in December 1970 when three of the seven circular cofferdams on the north side were destroyed by pounding waves. Then, due to the nature of the technical difficulties and limited construction schedule time, it seemed desirable to devise a way in which construction could proceed without being too lake-sensitive. Obviously, if men could work from the tunnel and proceed upward toward the bottom of the lake, not having to worry about the soil collapsing and bringing the lake in on their heads, the construction would be unimpeded by adverse weather. The answer to this, however, required techniques beyond the ordinary. The formation of petroleum is normally thought of as a geologically lengthy process, involving the accumulation of organic matter, its gradual burial, diagenetic breakdown via geochemical reactions, maturation, heating within a 75-150'C "oil window" induced by normal geothermal gradients in the subsiding basin, and slow product migration into structural traps (Tissot and Welte, 1984, Hunt, 1979). The entire process can take millions of years and, indeed, most oil reservoirs probably formed in this manner. How-ever, today in sedimented, submarine rift basins (Fig. 1), Cl to >C40 hydrocarbons with the chemical and physical properties of crude oil are forming in demonstrably much shorter time by rapid thermal maturation of immature organic matter in hydrothermal regimes that are unusually high for sedimentary basins (Brault and Simoneit, 1988a, b; Didyk and Simoneit, 1988; Kawka and Simoneit, 1987; Peter et al., 1988; Simoneit, 1983; 1984; 1985a,b; 1988; Simoneit et al., 1984; 1987; 1988).

The recent increase in size of open-pit mining operations has resulted in major improvements in efficiency that are beneficial to the mining industry. Higher bench heights, larger diameter blast-holes, and more powerful explosives have played an important part in reducing mining costs. These measures have, however, resulted in increased energy concentrations in the blast area, which can result in severe backbreak problems for final pit walls. If backbreak is not controlled, a decrease in the overall pit slope angle will ultimately be necessary, and consequences, such as decreased recoverable ore reserves and increased waste-to-ore ratios, will result. Greater amounts of loose face rock will be produced, and planned safety berms will be less effective or nonexistent. Hazardous working conditions can also result. Remedial measures, such as scaling large areas and using wire mesh or other artificial support, are very expensive and difficult to implement. There must be a trade-off between the money saved by using larger blasts, and the time spent to maintain pit wall quality. The best approach is to control blasting effects so the inherent strength of pit walls is not destroyed. Presplit and trim blasting are two control blasting techniques used to accomplish this. Both techniques are designed to create a low explosive energy concentration per unit of wall area at the perimeter of the pit. Energy concentration of the main production blast must also be controlled to avoid damaging the final pit wall. A low-energy concentration at the final wall can be obtained by decoupling charges, decking charges, using less powerful explosives, decreasing blasthole diameters, and changing the burden and spacing. Rock properties-fragmentation and the final state of the pit wall-influence the success of a blast. The most important properties to consider are: in situ rock strength, and the nature, frequency, and orientation of structural features. Since these variables cannot be controlled, they must be evaluated by suitable field tests, and then a control blast can be designed using controllable variables, such as spacing, burden, and hole diameter, so the blast will be successful for appropriate rock conditions. One main thrust of this article is to show how control blasts can be successfully designed for larger hole sizes, up to 381-mm-diam. While efforts to produce a good control blast in shovel/truck pits have been ongoing for some time, recent use of a modified presplit technique in dragline operations has helped reduce water problems, improve safety, and increase dragline productivity in a number of surface coal mines. This article presents examples on designing and using presplit and trim blasting for large hole operations in both shovel/truck and dragline mines. Presplit Blasting As introduction to presplit blasting, Fig. 1 illustrates a typical presplit blast layout using 102 mm-diam presplit holes for 381¬mm-diam production holes. For this type of blast, presplit holes would normally be drilled first, ahead of main production holes. The choice can then be made between loading and firing the presplit line or infilling the main blast. The mining methods used at many opencast brown coal mines in Poland and the German Democratic Republic are not used in the US to any extent. Using bucketwheel excavators, bucket chain excavators, and mobile conveyor bridges, the mining techniques may offer efficient, economic alternatives for operators in the US. These mining methods were observed during visits to several open-cast brown coal mines in Eastern Europe over the past two years. Some of them may be particularly attractive for the large lignite mines being planned in North Dakota and Texas.

Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc.’s Betze open pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, NV. Ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County (Fig. 1). The final pit will be about 2440 m long x 1550 m wide (8000 x 5100 ft), elongate in a west-northwesterly direction and about 425 m (1400 ft) deep. The pit straddles the Barrick-Newmont Gold Co. property boundary. History The first hole at the Goldstrike Mine was drilled in 1962. Between 1963 and 1964, 17 shallow holes were drilled with little encouragement, in view of the price of gold at $1.12/g ($35/oz). From 1962 to 1975, several different companies explored the Goldstrike property. In 1975, Pancana Industries acquired the property. INTRODUCTION Engineers involved with rock mechanics know the importance of discontinuities within a rock mass and their effect on its behavior when subjected to loads from structures or construction excavation activities. Various geophysical tools have been developed to provide comparative information on subsurface conditions, such as electrical resistivity, assorted seismic test methods, acoustic tests, etc. While these investigative means have proved invaluable in numerous situations, especially those where site alternatives are being evaluated, they shed little light on the difficult problem of quantifying the rock strength. For that purpose, a laboratory test program of samples obtained in the field is usually undertaken, often in conjunction with a variety of in-situ tests. While standard samples provide sufficient information on the rock properties, questions on the macro-structure of joints, faults, fissures, and their infillings often go unanswered. Presently, attempts are being made to incorporate into rock sampling technology new techniques which are directed towards providing better information on the incidense and orientation of discontinuities. One such device incorporates a scribe knife within the core barrel which scores the sample lengthwise as it is cored. The orientation of the scribe is known, thereby relating the bedding, planes, fractures, etc. to a spatial framework. A second approach, called the Integral Sampling Method, is the subject of this paper. BACKGROUND The development of public transportation in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area is, as in other cities, closely tied to the development of the area because of increases in population and commercial and industrial activity. Local transportation first appeared in the area in the 1870s when the population was fewer than 10,000 residents. Around 1910, after many consolidations of competitive interests, two large railway companies were formed: The Los Angeles Railway, which provided urban transportation in the Los Angeles City area, and the Pacific Electric Railway, which primarily provided suburban and interurban transportation. These two entities continued with their operations until after World War II, when the ownership passed on to the Los Angeles Transit Lines and the Metropolitan Coach Lines, respectively. By then the railroads needed new equipment, track rehabilitation, and, of course, more money-paying patrons. Lack of grade separation of railway facilities from other traffic increased commute times and encouraged travel by private automobiles. The romantic era of hopping on a Pacific Electric Company "Big Red Car" was coming to an end. As early as 1917, in fact, bus lines were substituted for unprofitable rail service. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority (LMTA) was established in 1951 by the California Legislature to study and plan for improvements in the public transportation facilities in the Los Angeles area. In March of 1958 the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority took over the operation of the two lines.

In the planning stages for a dozen years, the 9.11 mile long Mount Macdonald Tunnel is the focal point of the $600 million dollar Rogers Pass Project. The paper will discuss the construction of the tunnel that is being carried out from both ends. The eastern portion contractor has used a tunnel boring machine to excavate the upper part of the tunnel and at the west end contractor selected the conventional drill and blast method. A ventilation shaft located near the mid point is the main part of a ventilation system unique in the Western Hemisphere.

As with most industries, mining must now include in its plan of operation mechanisms to address a project's environmental impact. New regulations have focused attention on the potential environmental impacts of industry, particularly the handling of wastes. Modifications are currently being proposed to the Bevill Amendment. And development is ongoing of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Subtitle D regulations specific to mining wastes. The result is a growing concern on the part of lenders, developers, buyers and owners regarding acquisition and ownership of mining properties. One of the most effective tools in managing the regulatory requirements is an environmental audit. An environmental audit can be a literature review to determine regulatory requirements.
